Tim Busfield Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson
Friends who used to be 30 Something, Wingnuts, and Field of Dreamers, lend me your ear (s), and your eyeballs. Emmy-winner Timothy Busfield is a scream! His Burt Lancaster alone is worth the watch. Hysterical, and right on point.
Tim’s amazing bride, Melissa Gilbert joined us for a sec, she’ll be back! But she was a big part of the conversation––how they met, and where––great story. I love how he loves her, and her, him. Their togetherness is epic. We talked how they do it, handle challenges, and resolve them, so quickly. Merging their families - both married for the thrice time… co-parenting and grandparenting, building a home, and a life. Ain’t love grand.
We talked Tim’s early years in Michigan, his mother, her challenges, his father, and his. Tim getting the bug after seeing Burt Lancaster on the big screen, and going full circle co-starring with him in Field of Dreams so many years later––the challenges of that film. First, theatre out the wazoo… Actors Theater of Louisville to Circle Rep… being Matthew Broderick’s understudy on Broadway in Brighton Beach Memoirs and never getting on - Trapper John, getting an actors education, Nerds, Stripes, thirtysomething, his first gig with a guy named Snuffy, turns out there are 10 so far, 12 with Melissa’s… starring on Broadway for Sorkin, Sports Night, The West Wing, Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip, his two theatre companies intended to serve the young - the guppies did he call them? Being of service a major theme throughout. Turning down hosting SNL, thrice, auditioning for it without knowing, giving up the drink two weeks ago, how and why… his latest, The Cleaning Lady, and more importantly, his next binge with Melissa and their morning flight to Florida.
We talked for almost two hours, from LA to Michigan to Upstate NY and the UWS…. and I could have talked all night. Ridiculous fun. Down to earth, open, warm, thoughtful, helpful, funny, loving, fun, fun, fun. Do they come more likable than Tim? You’ll have to prove it.

Don’t let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment, that was known as Camelot.
This cast, this book, this production is simply amazing.

Recently, I've posted "The Northwestern Speech" from the pilot episode of Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom" which ran for three seasons (25 episodes) in 2012. I post again to encourage you to watch it in the U.S. on HBO Max, Youtube Pay to Watch, and Amazon Prime Video. Reasons to love this show and spend time binging it:
• — Jeff Daniels is outstanding as network anchor Will McAvoy. • — The cast and writing are excellent. • — David Harbour (also known for "Stranger Things" and "Hellboy" [2019]) plays another anchor on the same network • — The ensemble cast is very compelling, so their struggles and triumphs are also compelling. • — Jane Fonda plays a delicious bad guy in this series. • — Almost everybody in the show uses Blackberries. • — The theme score is beautiful. Reminds me of other great shows with amazing ensemble casts. • — Season 1, Episode 10 • The Greater Fool has some wonderful twists and a downright brilliant resolution that is exquisite and profound! • — To understand that episode, you will want to watch the rest of the series, just for the pleasure of it.
Many of the political and news stories are similar to today, including the Tea Party (MAGA Republicans), Conservative Republicans calling moderates RINOs and torpedoing their campaigns in the primaries, our country polarized and crippled by religious and political zealots who have no interest in governing if it means compromising with the other side, and media outlets being attacked for good journalism and attempting to shine a light of truth on morally bankrupt leaders, parties, and politicians.
"Aaron Sorkin once chronicled the daily work of the federal government in "The West Wing." In "The Newsroom," the Emmy-winning executive producer uses the operation of a fictional cable news network as the heart of the story, with Jeff Daniels portraying the network's lead anchor and leading an ensemble cast. Episodes are written around actual recent news events, reported by a staff that takes its collective responsibilities seriously, but corporate and commercial obstacles -- plus entangled personal relationships -- fly in the face of their public mission." @TheNewsroomHBO @HBO

The Broadway Theatre Review: Lincoln Center Theater’s Camelot and Broadway’s New York, New York By Ross When discussing the recent revival of LCT’s Camelot, my friend compared it (unkindly) to Bad Cinderella, saying that it might be worse than that much-maligned show (that I hear is “hemorrhaging money” waiting to see if the Tony Awards will give it a much needed financial boost – I don’t think…

Bill Kunstler and David Dellinger with Abbie Hoffman’s son Andrew, The First Annual Abbie Hoffman picnic, June 10, 1989, just a few months after Abbie Hoffman’s death from suicide. (Snapped by Allen Ginsberg)
Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” premiered this weekend and among its most troubling fabrications was having David Dellinger, a consummate lifelong pacifist, punch a courtroom officer. Didn’t happen. Full stop. Jerry Rubin is reduced to a Cheech & Chong character, sidekick to Abbie, which he was anything but, Rennie Davis, ‘Made out to be a complete nerd who’s afraid of his own shadow,” (Davis’ own words on seeing the film on which he wasn’t even consulted!) and there's general overemphasis on factionalism within the group, & disagreements between Hayden and Hoffman. It also completely lacks the cultural and literary context, omitting Paul Krassner, Ed Sanders, Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, and entirely leaving out Ginsberg’s legendary testimony, (Allen is only briefly featured, clownishly, at a march) You can’t fit everything into a film, but these were huge moments in American history. Fred Hampton, seen frequently conversing with defendant Bobby Seale in the film, was never in the courtroom, and Seale was bound and gagged for three days, not an hour or so as the film suggests. Seale is so prominently featured it should be titled the Chicago 8.
Flaws aside, it hopefully reignites discussion about the trial & illuminates more history of police brutality. It highlights the Nixon Whitehouse’s pursuit of the case after the Johnson administration determined the Chicago Police were responsible for the riots, and that it was, after all, a political trial as the Abbie Hoffman character played by Sacha Baron Cohen asserts throughout the film. Fun fact: According to David Dellinger, Allen introduced him and Abbie to each other telling them that he thought two of his favorite activists should meet each other.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
I better never get my hands on a time machine. I just know I’d initially set out to correct the course of history but would only wind up punching people like Julius Hoffman in the face. In my defense, I’ve seen The Trial of the Chicago 7. Afterward, you'll be fuming. More, you’ll be utterly flabbergasted - even if you already know the outcome of the trial. This movie takes you through a full gamut of emotions while examining at length the past and forcing us to confront the present. It’s one of 2020’s best films.
In August 1968, Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen), Jerry Rubin (Jeremy Strong), Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne), Rennie Davis (Alex Sharp), David Dellinger (John Carroll Lynch), Lee Weiner (Noah Robbins), John Froines (Daniel Flaherty), and Bobby Seale (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) all take part in the history-making protest against the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Five months later, they are on trial, charged with trying to incite a riot. They are represented by William Kunstler (Mark Rylance) and Leonard Weinglass (Ben Shenkman). Tom Foran and Richard Schultz form the prosecution. While Judge Julius Hoffman (Frank Langella) presides over the proceedings, protests outside the courthouse prove the whole world is watching.
If you were to choose one element of this movie to highlight as the “best”, I wouldn’t blame you for selecting the dialogue. Every exchange crackles. One moment, the court proceedings are so blatantly prejudiced you’ll be boiling with rage. Then, you’ll be shocked by how gross injustice can turn into laugh-out-loud hilarity. Afterward, you'll be inspired. Then, heartbroken. It's a masterful blend, only surpassed by the finely crafted characters.
There are A LOT of people to follow in this story. The titular Chicago 7, Bobby Seale, the judge, the lead prosecutor, and the leading defense attorney. Most films can barely handle 3 protagonists, a villain, and a plot. Writer/director Aaron Sorkin manages a careful balance that makes everyone feel real. It's not by giving everyone equal amounts of screen time. Some, like Tom Hayden and Abbie Hoffman, get far more than the rest. For men like Dellinger, we get a few key scenes that summarize all of their ideals and the way the protest/its fallout has affected them. We know these people intimately because this is the biggest moment of their lives, the ultimate crossroads where they will show their true colors. This test gives you all the proof you need to impose judgment upon everyone involved. When you do, you’re suddenly snapped from 1968 to the present. Didn’t we just see a legitimate protest met with unjust force and then a real-life riot handled so poorly it embarrassed an entire nation?
The dialogue and the characters would be nothing without actors. Among the great performances, two, three, four stand out: First, Frank Langella as Judge Julius Hoffman. You hate him but can’t always want more. The actual trial lasted 5 months. Every time skip makes you go “awww no!”. Eddie Redmayne would be the next actor I’d highlight. I don’t think any movie’s given him as complicated a role as this one. The same goes for Mark Rylance. He’s so down-to-earth and likable that when he drops a truth on you, it's like a punch to the gut. Finally, there’s Sacha Baron Cohen. This role takes full advantage of his comedic timing. It suits him so well, it’s like he was really there, or he’s the reincarnation of Abbie Hoffman.
Every year we get films about political, societal, or racial struggles but rarely like this. Every outrage in The Trial of the Chicago 7 is followed by inspirational scenes or laughter. You can’t wait to see what’s next, but you want it to last as long as possible. It’s sure to make my top ten list. (April 8, 2021)

Today, Live! It’s been a long time coming. 5 + years it’s taken to get a “yes” from Emmy Winner, Tim Busfield. He's so fun! Yay. And away we go!
Tim shares 30 Something, Sports Night, The West Wing, and Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip with a guy named Snuffy, and has a huge host of films, TV shows, and more stage performances that I've seen for a screen actor, maybe ever.
From starring on Broadway in Sorkin's A few Good Men, co-starring with Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, founding two stellar theatre companies, an abundance of service for kids in that regard, Quiz Show, Revenge of the Nerds, Trapper John, for all the seasons with our good friend, Gregory Harrison, Without a Trace, doing double- duty behind the camera, not only acting but directing of many of the above, exec producing Brooke Shields Lipstick Jungle, for one, directing the award-winning Guest Artist, written by and starring Jeff Daniels, serving in the Navy, and, perhaps most importantly, Tim's a lovingly devoted family man -in obviously mad love with his wife, Melissa Gilbert. What a great couple of givers they are, who've been gifted with each other.
I communicated with Tim a few years ago on the Facebook when trying to finagle him into doing this show, and told him about my actress daughter, Samantha. He was so kind. Had it not been for the pandemic, who knows!
Tim's a deeply soulful man, that's clear - and he's funny as... yeah, that. I can't wait for this!
