I am really struggling to understand the thought process of some of my students right now, and I don't even know what can be done to rectify the issue.

The last unit of my five-week summer literature class is on a personal essay from Joan Didion, called "Goodbye to All That."

Somehow, despite the unit literally being called "Creative Nonfiction with Joan Didion," me providing a PDF copy of the reading titled "Goodbye to All That" by Joan Didion, and even having an entire interactive video lesson on Joan Didion herself...

Somehow a student still turned in a reading response about "Good-Bye to All That" by Robert Graves. A nearly 400-page-long WWI autobiography.

So not only did this student not do the actually assigned reading, he also actively ignored every single Canvas page in the entire unit, completed a video-based assignment without listening to a word of it (apparently), and then, realizing that he had to find something to say about the unit, frantically googled "Goodbye to All That" and made up an entire two paragraph response based on a book he absolutely did not read.

When I asked the student how this mix-up could possibly have happened, he insisted he did read the PDF file from our class (weird, because Joan Didion's essay is not about WWI!) but just mixed up the author's name in his response.

I... What...?

At what point do you just have to start thinking "This is an aggressive refusal to read anything put in front of you"? Like, come on. Couldn't even read the name of the unit? Couldn't even engage with a Youtube video long enough to see a picture of Joan Didion and realize the writer for the unit is a woman definitely not named Robert Graves?

And at what point did common sense just not kick in? This is a five-week class; each unit is 3-4 weekdays max. Could the professor possibly be expecting the class to read a 400-page autobiography in three days, when everything else we're read has been less than 30 pages?

This is actually so concerning to me. How can we have college students that literally can't read?

btw another thing i love about 1899 is that eyk larsen is, by far, the most emotionally vulnerable character. he cries the most out of all the characters. his decisions are based on instinct and feeling. and not once is it ever implied that any of that makes him less of a man or weak in any way.

so many clearly traumatized male characters in fiction are portrayed as emotionally distant and barely ever allowed to really break on screen, the only emotion they're allowed to express is anger. which is, unfortunantly, accurate to how men are expected to act in real life.

but 1899 has none of that. eyk's anger at elliot in episode 2 is treated as just as much of an emotional response as him breaking down at the memories of his family. and him having those emotional moments is never presented as shameful or a character flaw (even though he did seem a little embarrassed about snapping at elliot like that, which is fair).

i'm not a man, i've never had to deal with being expected to be logical and rational and emotionless at all times, but i can sort of imagine what this kind of representation would mean to someone who's been made fun of for not being 'manly' enough because of their emotional reactions and responses.

overall, 1899 proving yet again why it's worth a watch.

h el l o ¿ So i am coming BACK to my cringy fucking roots embracing them and WRITING an ACTUAL MULTICHAPTER FANFICTION. THAT'S RIGHT BABY I AM UNSTOPPABLE NOW. but english is NOT my first language and i am Scared of posting something that sounds very weird on ao3 and getting roasted so bad i get sent to the moon and starve to death. so this is me humbly requesting aka begging on my knees. would anyone with a better grip on the english language than me mayhaps be willing to proof read some stuff. it's a sanders sides super hero/villain au in a nimona inspired fantasy setting but the story itself bears undeniable similarities to x men comics. also some unhealthy codependent dukeceit some cute logicality and classic enemies to lovers prinxiety. uhhhh no minors because there are some adult scenes and also remus is there. also remy and emile! truly i only left out thomas and nico anyways pleeeeeease

This Is A “Give Arthur Kingsmen A Hecking Nap” Propaganda Post

let me tell you about Arthur Kingsmen. You may know him as “that twink the sexy skeleton guy was chasing back in 2016″. why was this ghost chasing him? Well!

A group of friends and their dog go to investigate a creepy cave. They split up, Lewis (tall, purple, and fluffy) and Arthur (orange beanpole extraordinaire) go to the left fork and wind up at the top of a cliff over a sea of sharp stalagmites.

Then Arthur gets posessed by a demon, who uses his arm to shove his best friend to his death-by-impalement as he visibly fights it for control. Then whoops! Turns out that dog I mentioned, that little terrier looking pup? He’s actually another demon/yokai that transforms and violently RIPS HIS FUCKIN ARM OFF.

Now because of trauma, Arthur cannot remember this, though he experiences severe PTSD whenever he sees Mystery (who is once again hiding as their pet dog). He doesn’t understand *why* though, and is pushing himself to interact normally with said not-really-a-dog

(notice the subconscious gripping of his prosthetic whenever he’s triggered by the sight of said pup for added fun :))

I mentioned Arthur didn’t remember the scene in the cave? Well he ALSO DOESN’T EVEN REALIZE HIS BEST FRIEND IS DEAD. He’s on a futile search for a man he thinks is missing and even worse? His other best friend, Vivi (the girl in blue) physically cannot remember anything about Lewis existing.

Anyway, Lewis, the guy that died? Didn’t realize Arthur was possessed and thinks Arthur murdered him. So he’s out for revenge on a man working himself to the bone trying to find a friend he doesn’t know is even dead. This includes building a murder mansion to chase him through, and when that doesn’t work, stealing a semi-truck and running their van off a cliff and face-first into a brick wall. Then he grabs him from the wreckage and throws him off the same cliff he himself was killed on.

THIS IS LITERALLY THE MOMENT HE REALIZES HIS FRIEND IS ACTUALLY D E A D.

so he gets thrown off the cliff as Lewis’ twisted form of karmic revenge

and only survives because a shotgun blast shorts out the ghost magic moments before impact

and oh yeah, remember that demon that caused all this mess in the first place? It’s been hopping around in Arthur’s severed arm the whole time. And guess what it finds as its next host?
