The real "Soul Train."
Tim Burton is definitely channeling his teen years. (He's only 2 1/2 years older than me, so I recognize a lot of the stuff in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice).
Soul Train was a hugely popular TV series in the 70s. It introduced new songs, new performers, and new dance moves.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice's Soul Train Conductor is an homage to the late, great host Don Cornelius (played by British actor/comedian Stephen K. Amos).
For those who never saw it, here's a sample. You can see in the movie they recreated Don Cornelius' classic hair and sunglasses.

And dancing to Earth, Wind & Fire's "September."

I'm just saying that Barty would absolutely body a Beetlejuice cosplay, he's doing the voice, he's being creepy as fuck towards anyone who looks at him. He'd dress up as him to go watch the new film and terrorize people at the cinema for sure

Tbh I don't believe in generational divides all that much but Gen X really be having actors in their 70s and 80s be pushed to do action roles in an effort to recapture the glory of 80s franchises and expecting people under the age of 45 to be interested in it
like please let Harrison Ford do a role where he can be an 80 something year old in it

I've been listening to "Tragedy" by the Bee Gees, thanks to the second trailer for Beetlejuice 2. Which I think really leveled up with this song. ^^ Actually I kinda expected an SNL performace of "Tragedy" on the The Barry Gibb Talk Show this Halloween weekend. You know with David Pumpkins on drums. Lol Maybe next year. xD

WHO ELSE BUT ME CAUGHT THE BLACK SABBATH "EASTER EGG" IN THE "BEETLEJUICE" SEQUEL?
PIC INFO: Spotlight on BLACK SABBATH's 1970 eponymous debut album gatefold sleeve cover art, which I can bet you a million dollars, made a split second cameo/Easter egg appearance in "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice." It was the back of their 1970 debut LP, with the dead trees and branches.
I got just five words for ya:
Inside. Jeremy's. Crate. Of. Records.
It is the very last record facing the viewer inside Jeremy's crate of records. It is the very last record in his crate. Watch the movie and get back to me! BECAUSE THAT IS DEFINITELY THE BACK OF BLACK SABBATH'S 1970 DEBUT ALBUM FACING YOU!!

Another Beej 70s reference.
For those who never knew about them, that figure Beetlejuice splits
Tumblr media
is a reference to Russ Wallace figures, which were all over the fucking place in the 70s. (I was a teen then, I remember them well.)
Russ Wallace figures were beige and had catch phrases, some pop-culture-philosophical, some with mild sexual innuendos (nothing was blatant in the 70s, kids), and some meant to be uplifting. They were mostly sentimental kitsch. People gave them as presents for birthdays, anniversaries, job promotions, you name it. The damn things were in people's living rooms, on office desks, even in banks and law firms. Gift shops were choked with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some were risque, by 70s standards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The Devil made me do it" was a popular 70s saying, created by comedian Flip Wilson (who had his own TV variety show).
The figure Beej destroys is obviously modeled after this obnoxious figure.
Tumblr media
Tim Burton, who's only a couple years older than I am, must have hated these things as much as I did. The movie's figure is close enough to a Russ Wallace design so that those who remember them recognize it, but just far enough off design to not be copyright infringement.
My headcanon is some satisfied customer who died in the 70s gave that figure to Beetlejuice in appreciation for a bio-exorcist job well done.

Seeing some people online being annoyed that Beetlejuice is gonna have a different backstory in the sequel is so funny to me. Girl he already has like 5 canon backstories take your pick

I'm just gonna go ahead and tell you, although I'm going to wait and just stockpile Beetlejuice Beetlejuice goodies for myself until people have had a chance to see it, but I'm happy to say Beetlejuice Beetlejuice lived up to the hype and vibes of the first one. I know sequels can be hot dog-shit sometimes, especially in such beloved franchises, but this one was really good! 🥹
