WHAT CAN I DO TO CORRECT A PROBLEM WITH MY VA APPRAISAL?

VA APPRAISAL PERSPECTIVE AND WHAT THE VA DID TO TRY TO IMPROVE THE APPRAISL PROCESS

As early as the late 1980s and early 1990s The VA was fielding extreme frustration from the real estate industry over VA appraisal values coming in short of the contract price.

By the late 1990’s a movement was underway, largely based on the West Coast, Oregon, Washington & California, by groups of Real Estate Agents and their organizations complaining that:

VA Appraiser were biased and intentionally set a goal of lowering values in a sale.

Not allowing real estate agents to provide input by submitting sales to be used as comparable.

Not willing to go more than a mile to use “better” comparable.

Requiring unnecessary and minor repairs.

Taking too much time to complete an assignment.

As a result, the agents believed they were being forced to either avoid VA Loans or go through the process of calling for a Reconsideration of Value (ROV).

This was having a significant negative impact, particularly in areas with heavy Military and Veteran Retirement areas.

Even on the east coast the appraisal problem was felt in a region known as “Tidewater Area” in Virginia.

In the early 2000’s, market values were moving in an upward direction, and in particular the markets in the west and northwest. It was a time of quickly changing housing prices. Homes did not stay on the market very long at all. In 2020 through late 2022 very similar conditions exist.

This back and forth between the REALTOR® community and the appraisers placed more pressure on appraisers to try to reach ‘contract value’ (which is now illegal) rather than true ‘market value’. Complaints from the prospective VA home loan users reached a frenzied level as they asserted that they could not buy the home of their dreams because of slow and low appraisals.

Due to the success of this test program in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia, VA made policy changes regarding fee and staff appraisers’ interaction with other program participants and in the reconsideration of value (ROV) process in December 2003, thus the birth of the Tidewater Initiative.

The TIDEWATER Solution

The, then head of the C&V (Construction & Valuation) of the Roanoke, Virginia, Regional Loan Center of the Department of Veterans Affairs, M. “Sandy” Stewart stepped in with an idea on how to either eliminate the problem or at least provide a method to attempt to do so.

A meeting was arranged between the VA Fee Panel Appraisers and any interested real estate professional agents, loan officers, and others who wanted to attend. It was held at the Central Library in the City of Virginia Beach in early 2000.

Out of that meeting a “Beta Test” was initiated that quickly became the “Tidewater Initiative”. This was spelled out in VA Circular 26-03-11 December 22, 2003, then updated in VA Circular 26-17-03 February 6, 2017, and VA Circular 26-17-18 dated July 19, 2017, and then updated again on March 11th, 2019, regarding the requirements, now known as the “Tidewater Process”.

In that process, a lender appoints a “POC” or Point of Contact on the VA Assignment form 26-1805 that lenders fill out when ordering a VA Appraisal from a VA Fee Panel Appraiser.

Circular 26-17-18 noted the POC could be whomever the lender decided would be the appropriate person, usually a person on the lenders staff such as a loan officer, or, a real estate agent involved in the transaction, heck if you had a real smart Cocker Spaniel as your assistant, she too could have been named as a POC as long as she can answer a phone and work the phones and computer.

However, on March 11th, 2019, the VA made changes to Chapter 10 of the Appraisal Process of the VA Lender Handbook. This is both good and a bit inconvenient.

The revised procedure now instructs the Lender’s VA Appraisal Requestor to be the appraiser’s first point of contact when it appears that the estimated market value will be below the sales price.

Once the appraiser determines that the appraised value may be lower than the sales price, the appraiser provides the lender’s ‘requestor’ who in turn notifies the POC of possible low value. The POC then has 2 business days to provide the appraiser with any data they wish the appraiser to consider prior to completion of the assignment.

Although the preferred method of data compilation should be prepared on the VA Grid form, the appraiser should accept any response in any format during the 2-day period, not including weekends and holidays. The appraiser then reviews the data, uses it or not, and provides a response to the POC.

That response should be in the appraisal report itself, in a format that is easily understood. If the appraiser uses a sale or other data provided by the POC, it must be acknowledged in the appraisal report. If not utilized by the appraiser, there should be sufficient commentary so that all parties can easily understand the appraiser’s reasoning for not using the data that was provided by the POC.

If completed correctly, the process should alleviate any need for a Request for Reconsideration of Value but does not necessarily preclude that possibility.

Adding such a process to all appraisals could provide a wealth of ‘Consumer Protection’ to the public. However even more useful would be a totally transparent method for consumers to engage the appraisal community when an appraisal is suspected of being faulty.

APPRAISING IN GENERAL

All appraisers reference the Marshall & Swift Cost Approach Solutions manual for guidance on many aspects of an appraisal and follow, or should follow, the guidance set forth in (USPAP) Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.

That said, we need to remember that appraising is not a science, it is an art form. The same property could be reviewed by multiple appraisers and each of them see the value of that property in the light of a slightly different valuation. That does not make one appraiser any better or worse than another. It simply means that they are all human with their own subjective appreciation of some aspects of how the subject property is weighed against the comparable sales.

However, the objective facts remain the same for all appraisers. For example, the sold value of comparable properties is a fixed reality. The number of bedrooms, bathrooms and total rooms is a fixed reality. The square footage of the dwelling and the lot is a fixed reality and so on and so forth. Once the variable of model match (or as close as possible) has been met, and the preferred geographic boundaries have been met, some subjectivity will begin to seep into the appraiser’s value analysis.

So how does all this information prepare someone to understand the appraisal process?

For openers be very aware that is a Class 6 Felony to influence an appraiser. In Arizona this is covered in ARS 32-3633. The Federal Statute 15 U.S. Code § 1639e - Appraisal Independence Requirements is the governing authority to prosecute such misbehavior is also very relevant. Even more important, these types of statutes are not endemic to specific states in as much as all states have their own overlays to the federal statute.

Additionally, the FNMA Anti-Coercion Appraisal Rules under Truth in Lending Regulations are also in play. That rule states that, “All consumer-purpose, closed-end loans secured by a consumer’s principal dwelling originated on or after October 1, 2009, are subject to new regulations prohibiting coercion or improper influencing of appraisers.”

Any appraisal of a property offered as security for repayment of the consumer credit transaction that is conducted in connection with the transaction in which a person with an interest in the underlying transaction is subject to these rules,

So what qualifies as “Influencing an Appraiser”?

Compensate with intent to subvert the law or Extort

compensates, coerces, extorts, colludes, instructs, induces, bribes, or intimidates a person, appraisal management company, firm, or other entity conducting or involved in an appraisal,

2. Collude with or Induce or Bribe

or attempts, to compensate, coerce, extort, collude, instruct, induce, bribe, or intimidate such a person, for the purpose of causing the appraised value assigned, under the appraisal, to the property to be based on any factor other than the independent judgment of the appraiser.

3. Mischaracterize or Suborning any Mischaracterization

by mischaracterizing, or suborning any mischaracterization of, the appraised value of the property securing the extension of the credit; and who seeks to influence an appraiser or otherwise to encourage a targeted value in order to facilitate the making or pricing of the transaction

4. Intimidation

and withholding or threatening to withhold timely payment for an appraisal report or for appraisal services rendered when the appraisal report or services are provided for in accordance with the contract between the parties is in violation of 15 U.S. Code § 1639e / Influencing an Appraiser.

Penalties, if convicted of a Class 6 felonies could amount to serving a term of imprisonment of not less than one year nor more than five years, or in the discretion of the jury or the court trying the case without a jury, confinement in jail for not more than 12 months and a fine of not more than $2,500, either or both and these penalties are on the lighter side of possible adjudication. Fines topping $20,000, per convicted occurrence, are possible.

Now that may all sound pretty scary. However, any consumer, mortgage lender, mortgage broker, mortgage banker, real estate broker, appraisal management company, employee of an appraisal management company, or any other person with an interest in a real estate transaction are not prohibited from asking an appraiser to undertake 1 or more of the following:

Consider additional, appropriate property information, including the consideration of additional comparable properties to make or support an appraisal.

Provide further detail, substantiation, or explanation for the appraiser’s value conclusion.

Correct errors in the appraisal report, if you are completing a ROV.

A QUICK NOTE ABOUT ALLEGING GEOGRAPHIC COMPETENCY of an Appraiser

The appraiser is going to first try to find comparable properties, i.e., model matches etc., within the immediate subdivision. Whenever possible, the data set for comparables will be as close, in proximity to the subject property, as possible. The appraiser will try to use sales that are no older than 90 days, then expand to 180 days, then out to 1 year. However, if the pace of the real estate market has accelerated such that homes are selling in days and the marketplace has exhibited that pace for a reasonably protracted time-period, it would not be unusual for an appraiser to shorten his/her closed sales comparable properties to well short of within the last 90 days. This is another example of the ‘subjectivity’ within the appraisal process. An appraiser will usually then step out the geographic range, perhaps using major thoroughfares marking off a square or rectangle or a trapezoid.

There are few, if any, times when an appraiser will deviate or allow deviation to his/her data fields. So you are well served to not get into arguments with the appraiser over geography, unless you have evidence that the appraiser is ‘Geographically Incompetent

There are few times when a credible allegation of ‘Geographic Competency’ can be asserted. Nevertheless, according to R162-2g-502a, Standards of Conduct and Practice. (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) if there is credible evidence that the appraiser IS NOT competent in areas of but not limited to, an appraiser’s familiarity with a specific type of property or asset, a market, a geographic area, an intended use, specific laws and regulations, or an analytical method, the appraisal assignment may be challenged and brought to the lender’s attention.

When geographic competency is discussed, what is really being referenced is the Competency Rule of USPAP which goes beyond just geographic competency. According to USPAP, an “appraiser must determine, prior to agreeing to perform an assignment, that he or she can perform the assignment competently.” How does USPAP define competency? Again, competency goes beyond geographic competency:

“Competency may apply to factors such as, but not limited to, an appraiser’s familiarity with a specific type of property or asset, a market, a geographic area, an intended use, specific laws and regulations, or an analytical method.”

It is therefore understandable why an average consumer of the appraisal process/product may be way over his/her head in trying to work through appraisal inconsistencies or incompetency.

HOW DID WE GET WHERE WE ARE WITH THIS APPRAISAL CONUNDRUM?

In 2008 the attorney general of New York filed suit against Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac who at the time we're responsible for purchasing probably 60% of all loans originated in the United States. In short, the lawsuit alleged that lenders who sold their loans on the secondary market to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were getting too cozy with or had gotten too cozy with the appraisers who were appraising the properties they were financing.

A settlement was agreed to and from that came the HVCC (Home Value Code of Conduct). Under the new code mortgage brokers were prohibited from selecting appraisers; lenders or prohibited from using in-house staff appraisers to conduct the initial appraisals and lenders or prohibited from using appraisal management companies that they owned or controlled. By the beginning of 2019 the HVCC was in full force by not only Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac but also FHA.

By 2010 the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform act had been passed. Consumer protections from misbehaving lenders and appraisers was built into the Dodd Frank act and were modeled quite tightly after HVCC. Once the Dodd Frank act went into full effect in October of 2015 HVCC was replaced by the rules and guidance issued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) which was formed in 2011 as the agency to enforce the rules set forth in the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform act.

CFPB has published hundreds of informational guidance for the consumer on all aspects of credit lending from automobiles to insurance to home loans and credit cards. Unfortunately, and in my humble opinion, CFPB has not done a very good job at informing the public of these publications.

Many times, folks within an "ethnic enclave" or "cultural subgroup", perceive appraisal incompetence as terrorizing their home buying process. The appraisal terror that some buyers, within an "ethnic enclave" or "cultural subgroup", have experienced along with thousands and perhaps 10s of thousands of both homeowners and home buyers is not a one off. These consumers have valid concerns about a seemingly inefficient appraisal challenge process are correct in as much as we need to change the system. Educating homeowners will truly give them more power to protect themselves from inaccurate and incompetent appraisal professionals.

A consumer’s perception that their appraisal was mismanaged, either intentionally, by incompetence, or by a biased appraiser would be extremely difficult to prove. There is no way that I can profess to understand what fears and concerns a person/s within a minority community might have, of being treated equally and fairly as a person of color. That said the description of some appraisal processes that some folks within an "ethnic enclave" or "cultural subgroup" have experienced matches much more closely to the need for change in the appraisal process with respect to consumer engagement rather than a preponderance of racial bias within the appraisal process.

As a licensed real estate agent, with over 30 years’ experience, and the National Legislative Committee Chair at the Veteran’s Association of Real Estate Professionals (VAREP) the topic of consumer advocacy in the real estate and appraisal arena of the real estate transaction, my team and I and other well-informed colleagues are working on legislation that will improve transparency in all aspects of the real estate transaction to include the appraisal process.

A recent law (Improving the VA Home Loan Benefit Act of 2022) was passed in December 2022 that affirmed to the Veterans Administration that improvements to the appraisal process and appraisal challenge process will be made to the VA appraisal process.

The first time Cadet Nyota Uhura ever lays eyes on James Tiberius Kirk, they’re in a bar in middle of bum fuckin’ nowhere, as the girl on her left had said as their shuttle had settled down in Iowa for the night. He's a cocky bastard with a cute smile, and while she's content to flirt with him for the night she knows that prolonged contact would drive her nuts.

Three years at the Academy together prove to Uhura that Jim Kirk is every bit as insufferable as her initial assessment of him judged him to be, but also three years of doing minor interventions together around the Bay Area also make them – well, she wouldn’t call them friends, per se, but they’re friendly to each other.

Friendly enough that it’s a relief when she finds that he’s talked his way onto the Enterprise, after they’re called to respond to a distress beacon from Vulcan, even as they both find themselves listed as Active for the biggest intervention of their lives.

Per usual with my bullshit writing, my day shall be absurd and full of nonsense. As the price of most ride escort services are becoming quite ridiculously expensive, I’ve decided to start using the moderately priced Spree. I think that might’ve been a horrible idea. I haven’t been assaulted yet, but, I just really don’t like the vibes of the driver I have. It’d be absolutely absurd to just ask to be dropped off almost immediately from my trek to work just because the vibes of this man are absolutely rancid . At least I can pass the time by listening to my music and staring out the window, completely ignoring all the cameras adorning the interior of the car like it’s Guantanamo Bay or a maximum security federal prison. I haven’t listened to or paid attention to a word my driver, Kurt, has said. He doesn’t smell like a pile of decaying cadavers, though he looks like he’s trying to go for the David Gilmour in Pompeii (circa 1972) look with the greasiest hair to ever grace god’s green earth.

From what I can tell with his music choice, it’s trash. He mentioned something about being the person behind it, and to promote this “Kurt’s World”. His logo looks like something a horror youtube personality would include on a list of disturbing art made by the mentally ill. My name may not be Ariel, but I don’t want to be part of his world in any capacity. There’s just something off about this guy, and it’s not him almost constantly promoting his brand. I believe I found what Norman Bates would be like if he was a gen z Uber driver, no idea about the incestuous undertones of Norman’s relationship with his mother with this dude though. Wouldn’t doubt it. As far as I know, I prefer Norman, at least he doesn’t look like he stepped out of a Hollister catalog from 2007, or a greasy myspace twink from the year of our lord 2007. Dude drives a Prius, for fuck’s sake. Of course he’s cringe worthy.

Though my music is at max, I can still vaguely hear the eardrum slaughtering beat of whatever new age hip hop is oozing from the speakers like infected pus from a wound. Call me a music elitist and crucify me for this: whatever This dreadful noise is shouldn’t be classified as music. It should be classified as audio the CIA uses to torment war criminals and terrorists with in Guantanamo Bay. Not so ironic considering I’m in a Prius decorated with security cameras, tacky internet streamer lights, water bottles from an unrecognizable brand (possibly locally sourced), and a hydroflask with some elite gaming cult sticker plastered on it. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised my driver looks like he spends 90% of his time in front of a screen, screaming at other players, and having a diet consisting of nacho Doritos, Mountain Dew, and microwavable chicken tenders. No, he’s not overweight - he’s a twig. I wonder what his metabolism is. This dude should be studied by Harvard or the CDC - “AREA MAN HAS THE MOST ABSURD METABOLISM IN EXISTENCE”. If I sound like I’m being too brutally cruel with my observations of this guy, uh, it could be far worse.

Curiously, I looked up his social media handle. Of course he’s the type of gamer who screams and throws his controller across the room because someone said some typical xbox live chat insults from 2010. This man claimed he’s going to fuck some other player’s mom, sorry bro, from what I can gather, you get absolutely no pussy. If I’m being quite honest, he looks like he cries when he has an orgasm. Some women into S&M are into that as well, but, uh, I don’t think anyone in that community wants you. I would go further into my Freudian analysis of this dweeb, however, I don’t know what would be throwing the envelope into the Marianas Trench at this point. It’s not like he’s reading my internal monologue. Sure he shares his first name with one of the X-Men, but it’s not Professor Xavier. There’s an alternate universe where this dude’s a cult leader somewhere deep in the jungles of Cambodia, committing war crimes on a daily basis, with a bounty on his ass from the US government. A CIA assassin on a mission to terminate with extreme prejudice miles down the river.

BUFFALO - The Tooth Fairy has brutally murdered an entire family while they slept in their home and police are still no closer to even a suspect. This has lead many to wonder if investigators have dropped the ball on this investigation. This madman seem to have no M.O. other than the choice of victim. There is no apparent pattern that could lead police to a next target. And the killer has left precious few clues on the crime scene. The one thing that can be said about local police is that they were smart enough to know right away that they were out of their element and called the FBI to take over the scene immediately. Certainly the national database used by the FBI can more quickly connect the Leeds murder with any potential other cases, but with no apparent patter, it is hard to see how they will be able to take the investigation much further.

LECTER TRIAL BEGINS

Courtroom packed as jury hears first evidence

BALTIMORE - A decades long hunt ended yesterday with the apprehending of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Lecter is the FBI's main suspect in the gruesome Chesapeake Ripper murders that ravaged the area for years. Officials have suggested that his reign of terror may reach as far as 15 years. The FBI has never encountered a serial killer who possesses the cunning of the Chesapeake Ripper who has been able to elude police for such a long time even though his murders are among the most shocking and elaborate on record. The manhunt creshendoed yesterday afternoon when Dr. Lecter was arrested at the country home of Will Graham, a crime profiler who worked for the FBI until he himself became suspected of being the Chesapeake Ripper and was arrested and subsequently released on a couple of short years ago. No word on Graham's actual involvement in the crimes or arrest has been [illegible]. Dr. Lecter has been a respected and revered member of the psychiatric community in the Bay area for nearly 20 years and was most notable known to the public for his testimonials at the trial for Will Graham. Dr. Lecter was Graham's clinical psychologist and played no small part in his incarceration in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Graham was later exonerated and Dr. Lecter himself became the lead suspect. The attempted arrest of Lecter resulted in the deaths of one person, hospitalization of 3 others, 2 of whom were FBI agents. Dr. Lecter then disappeared until now when agents were able to successfully take him into custody without incident.

The FBI never commented.

Hannibal the Cannibal has gotten a call from a very special visitor- none other than Will Graham himself. I saw it with my own eyes, Graham coming form the main entrance to the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane on a recent afternoon. This mysterious visit had this reporter curious to its nature. What could Graham, who was almost a victim of Lecter himself, have to discuss with the Mad Doctor? A bit more digging lead me to face to face discussion with Will Graham. Needless to say he was evasive. But I was able to suss out that Graham has begun working for the FBI again on the Tooth Fairy investigation. And he was in fact visiting Lecter to help him get information on the Tooth Fairy murders. Is this really where to FBI has sunk? Hiring a man with questionable stability to get information form a clinically insane psychotic? If this is where the FBI has been able to take this investigation, this reporter is worried. Worried for the family left behind by the Leeds and Jacobi murders. And worried for the next family on whatever deranged list the Tooth Fairy has made. For surely there will be a next family. There have been three so far the the Tooth Fairy shows no sign of stopping. And frankly- what's to stop him? Certainly no local police agencies. Certainly no the FBI who have done nothing to further the investigations since they took over several months ago.

Desperation Leads to Partnership with Cannibalistic Killer The recent apparent partnership between the FBI and Hannibal Lecter has this reporter wondering if there is anyone with whom the FBI won't partner. One wonders the validity of whatever information can be gleaned from someone who is so clinically insane as to devour those around him. How much can Lecter be trusted not to give misleading information to protect perhaps a fraternity of killers with whom he would most definitely be a member. And what does Lecter get from all this? Special privileges? Or maybe just the excitement of getting inside information on the violent nature of the Tooth Fairy crimes. This would no doubt a source of great pleasure for someone so diabolical in nature. I wonder how this makes the families of the victims feel. To know that Hannibal the Cannibal is drooling over the bloody remains of the lost loved ones. Is whatever little information can be provided by this this 'expert' killer worth making the victim's families continue to suffer?

Autobus Park №7: Kyiv’s Abandoned Transport Circus

Kyiv might be Europe’s single greatest city for late-twentieth century Modernist architecture. It boasts many wild, eclectic, and vividly imaginative examples of the style, built during the height of Soviet monument-mania. Though amongst its steel and concrete marvels of Soviet-era architecture, one of Kyiv’s most striking modern buildings has, in recent years, also become one of the city’s most problematic ruins. Autobus Park №7 – once the pride of the Ukrainian transport industry – exists today as a decaying morgue for almost a thousand abandoned buses.

The design challenge of the Autobus Park №7 was to create an efficient depot capable of housing and maintaining a fleet of some 500 buses, in an urban environment where building space was limited. Had the building been constructed like a warehouse, or a factory, using a square plan and a regular pillar-based solution for supporting the roof, it was estimated that the total size of the building would have needed to be at least 4,000 square metres. However, an ingenious solution was proposed instead.

The chief engineers on the project, V. A. Kozlov and S. I. Smorgon, were responsible for the idea of using a cable-suspended roof. They took their inspiration from circus buildings – the cylindrical concrete-and-steel constructions which were by this time a ubiquitous feature in cities throughout the Soviet Union. By designing the building on a circular plan, and suspending concrete roof panels on cables strung between a central support pillar and the outer walls, it was found that both space and construction costs could be significantly reduced. Moreover, this design, with its organic, circular shape, lent itself more to what was then considered a modern and humanistic work environment for employees – while its form, reminiscent of circuses and Palaces of Culture, presented the bus depot not as a bland, functional box, but rather a community venue.

Kozlov and Smorgon built a 1:10 scale model to test their idea. The central support pillar would be 18 metres high, a tower of reinforced concrete with a diameter of 8 metres, consisting of 0.3-metre thick concrete walls around an inner support of solid steel with a cross-section of 0.32 x 0.22 metres. Attached to the top of this pillar, were 84 radial cables – steel ropes with a diameter of 65 millimetres. Each of these cables was able to support a weight of up to 350 tons, and the roof would be constructed on top of them: a suspended tent dome, created from concrete plates, and with a total diameter of 160 metres.

On its completion in 1973, the building was considered an engineering marvel – its hanging roof was one of the largest ever constructed, and this system of support reduced the building’s necessary size from 40,000 square metres (the estimate for a pillar-supported roof) to a footprint of just 23,000 square metres.

As much as possible, the design aimed to take advantage of natural light. The concrete plates of the roof were fitted with portholes, most of which were concentrated close around the main support tower. In the outer wall, upright glass cylinders were installed between concrete panels, serving as sturdy support pillars that both insulated the building against the cold outside, and allowed refracted light to shine into the wings of the building. This solution proved particularly robust, and most of these glass pillars have survived intact since the early 1970s until this day. Between them, these design choices resulted in an interior space and working area that enjoyed bright sunlight during the day, thus minimising the additional cost of electrical lighting.

Once operational, Autobus Park №7 was the largest vehicle depot in the Soviet Union – and it was rumoured, potentially the largest anywhere in the world. It served as more than just a garage, though. It was the base of operations for the entire fleet of buses serving the capital, including city buses, intercity buses, and also those working international routes, to Germany, Poland, Belarus and Russia. The building was fully air-conditioned, it featured a four-gate vehicle wash, and a mechanised repair bay fitted with conveyor belt systems. The building had a staff of 1,500 workers, and featured workers’ canteens, as well as a computing centre too – where teams calculated staff salaries and work shifts, as well as designing and optimising bus routes.

Sadly, the glory days of Autobus Park №7 would be short-lived. Following the break-up of the Soviet Union, many of the fleet’s international routes were discontinued. Services were gradually reduced through the 1990s, into the 2000s, while meanwhile, the building was increasingly used to store wrecked vehicles awaiting repair or decommissioning. The reduction of domestic bus routes in 2005 was a further blow, and eventually, in 2015, the autopark closed its doors for good – the building slipping into disrepair, as the once-proud circus was steadily transformed into a scrapyard.

Today, Autobus Park №7 in Kyiv seems to be locked in a downward spiral of decay. The building itself is nothing short of an engineering marvel, an extraordinary work of architecture that supporters have suggested could be adapted now into a museum, or even a film studio. In April 2018 a petition was registered on the website of Kyiv City Council, calling for the building’s preservation – but it only received 321 votes, a long way short of its target of 10,000 signatures. Even had it been successful though, good intentions don’t count for much without action and intent on the part of Kyiv City Council; where currently, any talks of potential preservation are being blocked at a bureaucratic level.

For 25 years the building has been owned by the company Kyivpastrans (‘Kyiv Passenger Transportation), whose deputy general director, Sergey Litvinov, has said that Autobus Park №7 poses an imminent risk of collapse, and, given the cost and scale of such a project, would be almost impossible to save. Meanwhile, other former transport depots around the city have already been bulldozed to make room for new residential blocks and shopping centres. Many property developers would jump at the chance of getting their hands on this 23,000-square metre plot – and from the perspective of the current owners, it is probably a more attractive financial proposition. The building is neither listed nor protected, so were it empty, there would be nothing to stop the owners from knocking it down overnight.

However, for the time being all parties are locked into a kind of stalemate over the building’s contents. The estimated 903 rusting vehicles stored inside (including LAZ, Volvo, Ikarus, and various other brands of urban and long-distance buses) pose a major administrative problem. These buses cannot easily be removed, or scrapped, as technically they are yet to be decommissioned from service. A new regulation that was introduced into Ukrainian law in 2013 complicated the bureaucratic procedure and created a backlog; so that all of the vehicles inside Autobus Park №7 today are – officially, on paper – still in service and awaiting audit. As such they cannot legally be taken apart for scrap, and right now, there’s nowhere else to store them in the city but here.

So for now, it’s a waiting game. If Kyivpastrans and Kyiv City Council are able to solve the bureaucratic headache of their vehicle decommissioning procedure, remove the abandoned buses, and then find the will, not to mention the funding, to undertake the colossal project of preserving Autobus Park №7 (while turning down more lucrative offers from property developers in the process), then perhaps the building might yet be saved. But in the meanwhile, the circus roof is sagging, and young trees are already sprouting from cracks in the concrete.

It may just be that this building, an engineering marvel of the Soviet period, having failed to find its place in a post-Soviet world, is doomed to go the same way as the regime that built it.

Black Sails, IV (S1, ep 04)

- Silver's horrified face when he finds out he's going to have to roast pigs is a Journey, starting with shock, then fake smiling, and then this horrified shuddery expression. It's just as interesting when they drop the dead pig at his feet and he clearly doesn't know what to do with it and also finds it disgusting. I can absolutely see where all the Jewish John Silver headcanons come from, especially since it's unlikely that a London urchin has never seen a dead pig and raw meat in general before.

- Here we have the first performance of Cassandra DeGroot: he knows that the bay they'd chosen to do the careening was too dangerous, and warns the crew. He's immediately countered by Flint, who has much more persuasive arguments to get the careening done fast but in a risky manner. (this whole thing reminds me of our current COVID/climate situation, where scientists get talked over by politicians, and people prefer listening to the latter because they seem to offer much better prospects than the “catastrophist” former)

- In this episode Billy is now quartermaster and he shows himself to actually be really good at disciplining the crew, something Gates, DeGroot and even Flint recognise. However, he also agreed to do the careening only because he's afraid to say no to Flint and allowed the men to have a fuck tent, which he feared would distract them - and it did, the two men who placed the rope on the wrong tree decided not to follow his orders and go fuck instead. This all weighs on him enormously after the disaster with Randall and Morley, who accuses him minutes before his death of already being in Flint's pocket. It's pretty clear that more responsibility doesn't do Billy's mental state any good.

- Morley's story about the Maria Aleyne gives some idea of a timeline, albeit a faint one. The incident took place "a number of years back", before Billy joined. This means that Billy is a somewhat new addition to the crew. We know that Randall was bosun when Billy joined. This also establishes that Lord Hamilton has been dead for several years, which now begs the question: who is the Lord Proprietor that Richard Guthrie is now in touch with? Did Thomas have a younger brother who inherited the Bahamas? Was someone new appointed? Was there a gap between Proprietors that allowed the pirates to establish themselves even more after Lord Alfred's death?

- I just adore the fact that Miranda actually went to stinking, violent Nassau because she was just too impatient to wait at home and wanted to be there when the Walrus came in and immediately hear the news of Lord Alfred's death. She is that vengeful and angry and I love her <3

- Speaking of which, this episode gives us the Passive-Agressive Sex Scene which makes so many people doubt of Flint's attraction to Miranda. Just look at Flint’s face: this man isn't uncomfortable or sad he is PISSED. He plays starfish and glares at Miranda all through it (while maintaining an erection all the same!). Miranda must be hella frustrated (or determined) because she manages to get off in spite of all of this (also, how uncommon is it for a sex scene to end when the woman climaxes rather than the man?) It's only when it ends that both Flint and Miranda are both shown as vulnerable and sad and reflective, with Flint reaching up to touch her but not quite getting there - imo because he's still angry but knows that she (and he) needs comfort.

- This leads into the argument over Meditations, and Miranda explicitly talking about Thomas and not wanting to forget him. The book hasn't been touched in a long time, confirming the idea that Miranda shared it with Richard Guthrie because Flint refuses to touch it. Her grief, her loneliness, are incredibly poignant in this scene, and we see Flint shift from bristling and stonily glaring at her, to absolutely melting (Toby's facial expression shifts here are just *chef's kiss*) and finally being gentle and tender with her. However, even though he promises to make things better, Miranda clearly doesn't believe him anymore.

- This brings in a big theme in the episode: betrayal from people you care for/trust. Mr Scott asks Eleanor not to do anything rash in order to get the Andromache’s guns, only to discover her Plan B: to kill Bryson if he didn't comply. In the meantime, Richard Guthrie tells (a very sceptical) Miranda that he can only support Eleanor and Flint, because he pretty much has no choice in the matter. He then proceeds to betray his daughter by making a deal with Bryson and with Mr Scott, who’s still smarting from Eleanor’s betrayal and who Guthrie tries to convince by saying that Eleanor's endeavour will lead to her death and Nassau’s destruction (considering what we later find out about Mr Scott, Eleanor’s safety is probably not be the argument that actually compels Mr Scott - but he certainly doesn't want the Navy searching the area and finding Maroon Island, and needs a stable Nassau to continue supplying his island).

- The Undercooked Pig scene and Silver's attempts at communicating with Flint will never not be funny. Silver looks so small when Flint glares him down, but that doesn't last all that long: once Flint has taught him how to cook the pork, Silver seems much more bold, asking Flint how he learned to glaze the pig, insisting that Flint should trust him and not Billy. This is also a moment where Silver shows that, unlike Flint, he is incredibly perceptive: he noticed that Billy is "straining at the seams" because of the lie he told. And while Flint spits a "there is no we" and calls Silver a rodent, it's obvious that Silver's words still have an impact on him. Their collaboration is sealed when Silver hands him the cleaver so that he can save Randall (and himself). When Flint returns the cleaver to Silver, he's ready to accept that Silver is actually on his side (albeit for selfish reasons) and listens to him for the first time.

- Max believed that she could charm Vane's remaining crew into being kind to her - and overall it seems to have worked. While again I hate this plot, it does give an interesting insight into how even the worst pirate crew is portrayed: most of the men are happy to comply with Max and get sexual rewards "for gentle obedience". Most of them, basically, aren't violent monsters deep down. However there's always one, in this case That Big Bastard (I'm sure he has a name, I just can't be bothered to google it), who clearly gets a kick out of torturing/raping people and hates the idea of a woman taking the lead.

- Fuck You Jack is another theme of this episode. Vane is high on opium and booze and has basically lost the will to do anything. Anne has been courted by several other crews, but Jack hasn't received any offers (note there's no loyalty to Vane here, Jack’s ready to leave, but nobody will have him) and nobody is willing to help him after the pearl cock-up. Then Noonan wants Max back, which Jack refuses because she's the only thing keeping the few members of his crew loyal - and Anne isn't on board with that, leading to her telling him to fuck himself. This, btw, might have crossed Jack’s mind considering the position she was in when he found her. I think it’s easy to forget that Jack is portrayed as pretty callous and happily willing to treat people like pawns too.

- When Richard Guthrie talks about Nassau, he describes it as a place "a place where she [Eleanor] matters, a place where you [Mr Scott] matter", and adds that a place like this isn't meant to last. Nassau, then, is currently an utopia where women and black people can have some semblance of power - and he doesn't believe that this will ever be allowed to exist because this kind of story never has a happy ending in their current society. But when Flint talks to Eleanor about their project, he's of the opposite view: people don't believe that it's possible, but when they succeed, they'll say it was inevitable. It seems Flint is firmly in the camp of "winners get to tell the story", and that the story will influence how the rest of the world sees them.

- When the Walrus tilts and squashes Randall, Flint stops Billy from intervening and rushes to rescue Randall himself - even though he knows the ship will be cut loose at any moment. He puts himself into incredible danger in this moment. Why? Theoretically, it could be for a manipulative purpose: to look good to the crew, or to get rid of Morley. But Flint seems genuinely involved in the struggle to save Randall, and he barely had time to think before he ran off. I feel that this is a rare spontaneous moment for Flint, where instead of thinking about his plans or his position as Captain, he just thinks like a person in an emergency who wants to rescue someone else. He absolutely could have died out there. And while Billy seems to suspect him of having killed Morley, I don't find that reading compatible with what we're shown of Flint trying to save Randall. True, he may have kicked/pushed Morley at the very last second, but we’ll never know that for sure.

- Back to the theme of people betraying their loved ones, we have Richard Guthrie getting back to Miranda, telling her he knows who she is and revealing the "Thomas went mad because Miranda and Flint cheated" story which he heard from Lord Alfred himself. So now Miranda knows that her identity has been revealed and that Richard could spread the story to, say, Pastor Lambrick (let's not pretend this didn't cross her mind, she keeps her identity secret for a reason). And then Guthrie offers her a way back to civilisation. This, right after a kid threw a stone at her, calling her a witch. This, after Flint has promised to make things better, even as he goes deeper into reckless/utopian plans of fortifying Nassau. Backed into a corner, was Miranda ever going to refuse, if she could be safe and have him be safe? And obviously, Richard Guthrie isn't doing this out of the kindness of his heart. He apparently figured out that Miranda was a way to get in touch with Pastor Lambrick and that ridding New Providence of Flint and winning over the “good”, normal inhabitants would be a perfect beginning to buying back his influence on the Island - the end goal being named Governor, of course.

- If there was any doubt that Vane’s tough guy thing is part of an act, his opium hallucination of Eleanor makes it crystal clear: "you're alone, you don't have to pretend with me". That is, pretend that he's not afraid and that he's not vulnerable. The hallucination also offers Vane an explanation for why Eleanor is how she is: like him she's afraid of appearing weak. He's actually spot on, a big problem in their relationship is that they're too alike and are struggling for dominance. Which is probably why Vane wants to overcome his fear and weakness, and regain power by confronting his old slave master (btw, nice parallel with Flint haunted by Miranda in S3). The scene where Vane kills Noonan also shows him in a very animalistic light - at first he's cornered and somewhat pathetic, beaten, throwing up, only saved by the fact that a gun misfires. Then he turns violent: quick, instinctive and relentless, deaf to Noonan's plea to leave him alive, even if theoretically it could have been profitable for him.

- I have to say, I snickered quite a bit when Pastor Lambrick sees Richard Guthrie and tells him "God teaches us not to cheer when someone stumbles, in your case I may ask his forgiveness". I mean, I really see his point. He leads a group of Puritans who are trying to make a life for themselves on this island. Historically, people who lived and farmed in New Providence were constant targets for errant pirates, who robbed, raped and killed a lot of them. This is what the Pastor is trying to protect his congregation from (and Miranda, since he doesn't understand why she's with Flint and is likely terrified that a pirate lives so close to his congregation, hence the spies he sends out). There's a bit of a parallel with Billy, where both Lambrick and Billy are presented as being very preoccupied with the well-being of the group they're responsible for, and both are presented as, well, Goody-Two-Shoes - (self-)righteous, loyal, honest, caring. Except they're both human, and sooner or later they falter.

As a nonbinary bisexual, I’m no stranger to people erasing me and telling me that I’m something I’m not. With the rise of terms like “pansexuality” and “omnisexuality,” many people unfamiliar with the true nature of bisexuality now think that it’s transphobic or otherwise binary — some go so far as to claim bisexuals only believe in two genders.

People assert that, while bisexuality allegedly means “attraction to two genders,” pansexuality and omnisexuality, unlike bisexuality, denote “attraction to all genders.” It’s easy to think this way if only examining the terms at face value, but this comparison is an outright lie. Some others say that new labels were a response to transphobic exclusion from the bisexual community — this is similarly not the case. (I’ll be compiling a piece on the history of the “pansexual” label at a later date.) Using this “reasoning” to separate bisexuality from these other terms is woefully inaccurate and disrespectful to bisexual and transgender people.

While there are cissexist definitions of bisexuality, that holds true for “gay” and “straight,” too. Bisexuals have also described our orientation as attraction regardless of gender¹ for decades — at least fifty years or so — and we still do. Before words like “transgender” and “nonbinary” came about, bisexuals still often saw themselves as attracted to people beyond gender.

Androgyny and gender-nonconformity are also a staple in bisexual culture. Major bisexual icons throughout history explored and embraced it. Look at bisexual chic, especially the glam rock era. Some bisexual activists and organizations have historically included and allied with transgender and nonbinary people, and many of us are transgender or nonbinary ourselves.

Gender-expansive (or -fluid, or -blind) descriptions of bisexuality are nothing new — and with the exception of the Getting Bi quotes, the above compilation is just what I was able to find online. Arguably, the concept of excluding genders never even crossed the mind of many twentieth-century bisexuals — not just because “nonbinary genders hadn’t entered the mainstream” — but simply because many bisexuals understand bisexuality itself as “beyond” gender. Go to any bisexual organization and they’ll tell you bisexuality is broad and can include anyone.

Of course, the above quotes do not reflect the beliefs of every bisexual — no single quote can do that. These quotes were certainly not the only variation of bisexual-given definitions of bisexuality. I’m only pointing out that the “both” descriptions are similarly not the only ones that exist.

Even then, before wider knowledge of and language for nonbinary identities, attraction to “both” men and women was attraction regardless of gender. “Both” does not purposefully keep anyone out; it only (mistakenly) assumes how many groups there are. Gender not being a make-or-break, or not caring about gender in general, doesn’t depend on how many genders there are.⁶

Not to mention, all sexualities automatically include some nonbinary people — “nonbinary” isn’t merely a third gender. The mere notion that someone could just “not be attracted” to nonbinary people as a group completely misunderstands nonbinary identity.

Some bisexuals “see a person, not a gender,” while others, like me, see a person with a gender (that doesn’t stop us from finding them attractive), if they have one. Being bisexual has made me see people in more gender-neutral ways. Our experiences are far too vast to pin down, and there’s immense beauty in that vagueness.

Also, while bisexual activism and transgender activism have frequently overlapped, plenty of cisgender bisexuals are transphobic. But this is because all sexualities have transphobes. Even if we coined a sexual identity that only transgender people could use, some identifying with it would still likely be transphobes. Why allow transphobic bisexuals to erase the attitudes of all the bisexuals before and after them?

I find it incredibly odd that people now task bisexuals with proving our inclusivity considering that, for decades, we never had to. We had always (i.e., consistently throughout history, not as in every bisexual) been warping gender norms, but it was never to debunk a myth or make ourselves look good; it was just how we were. That hasn’t changed.

One of the predominant stereotypes is still that we’re indiscriminate sluts willing to sleep with anyone, but somehow there’s a new wave of folks insisting that we require our partners to obey the gender binary. I have a severely hard time believing this conclusion is based on reality. Almost all attempts to redefine bisexuality as binary come from people who don’t identify as such.

Imagine if we performed this revisionism with the word “gay.” For this example, I’ll use “gay” to describe gay men in particular.

“Gay” only means exclusive attraction to men, so the people who use that word only like cisgender men. I’m androsexual, which means I like cisgender, transgender, and nonbinary men.

Doesn’t that sound ridiculous? So why do we only apply this rhetoric to bisexuals? (It couldn’t possibly be because of biphobia, could it?)

While it’s obviously unrealistic to say that no bisexual person has ever been transphobic, bisexual orientation is not, and never has been, about exclusion. Considering that bisexual activists were seldom (if ever) focused on the prefix in the word “bisexual,” this recent fixation people have on trying to find a way to use “two” in its definition is misguided.

Begging to differ is ignorant and arrogant, contradicting not only history but many current bisexuals who understand bisexuality as all-encompassing. Acting like it’s uniquely binary or inherently limited in any way is indisputably false and biphobic. Please stop speaking over us and erasing our history. It, like the bisexual community itself, is bountiful, beautiful, and never going away.

Past The Point Of No Return (Ch.1)

Summary: Your the young and fiery Cryptographer for M16 who happens to be the obsession of the mysterious and disfigured Safin. When you threaten to bring him down, he makes sure to drag you down with him.

A/N: Please Read!! I haven’t seen any Safin x reader fics, so I decided to write one myself. Ik the movie comes out in November, but I cannot wait. I’m in love with this pyshco man. This will be a mature story by the way and I’ll try updating as soon as I can! I’ll add warnings before each chapter starts. Just take a few notes in! Ik the movies come out in November so this is pure speculation on Safin’s origins/motives. Bond is back in business and took back 007 while Nomi took 008. Reader is a Cryptographer for M16. Your codename will be C but y/n will come in soon. Also, Reader is female. Hope you enjoy!

The Pandemic had caused discord throughout London. It didn’t seem like it would infect the globe in less than three months. But when Q had gotten the virus, the office had shut down in less than twenty-four hours. If you weren’t a field agent, then it was required to work from home. For someone like C and Q, it wasn’t a big deal. All of there work required communication from electronics. But evil was always on the rise. It never stopped. March had dragged into June as the Pandemic only worsened. y/n wasn’t one for social interaction, so thriving in isolation wasn’t the worst thing on the planet.

M16’s biggest threat was the infamous Safin. Even Q couldn’t encrypt any information on him, nobody could. Safin was a prime example of an anarchist. He refused to let some Pandemic stop his reign of terror and thirst for world domination. His movement of so-called “absent authority” was causing terror in post-soviet countries. Violent protests, property damage, the list when on. The anarchist targeted smaller countries that wanted to break free from there governments. Bond called Safin “a man who wanted to play god because he was bored”. Safin was a true anarchist (and a possible sadist). Information on his past and whereabouts were near impossible to find. He would insult M16 constantly since he knew he was winning the game of cat and mouse. It seemed like Safin was going to keep upsetting established order until the brink of a civil war.

But you were always one step ahead.

C, or y/n, was a Cryptographer for M16. After Bond’s hiatus, they had been recruited for there work in the military. You were the perfect candidate; bilingual, hands-on, young, intelligent, and fiery. One of the many languages you spoke was Morse code and other military languages. Not even Q, the smartest man in M16, was fluent in all of them. But with your aid, he caught onto it quite well. The Cryptographer and Quartermaster had made quite an efficient team and friendship. While Q gave orders and signals to the double’s oh, you stayed in the back, encrypting the signals and decrypting codes. Having a Cyrptographer was truly an aid for M16. You were praised by all of agents for your hard work and loyalty to the world of espionage. Enemies and other organizations envied for the cryptographer.

Before the lockdown, you had noticed a pattern in the protests. The leading agitators would all wear bandannas covered in the phonetic alphabet. Any normal person could see nothing in this. But with years in the military and language, you quickly followed onto the pattern. Q had noticed it as well along with the other double oh’s. The only people who spoke the phonetic alphabet in M16 were you and a few agents, and not even Q could decipher such a code. The message said many things, mainly gibberish. But you did not give up so easily. Whenever you saw a challenge, you attacked it with rigor. After rearranging for hours on end, ten codes had stuck out to M16 that could be a lead in bringing down the anarchist.

All of them happened to lead to capital cities across the world, which happened to be countries that were infested with Safin’s anarchism. With even more research, Q managed to pinpoint possible gatherings for the terrorists. It could be a break in the case. Each double oh was sent to these locations. 007 and 008 were both flown out to Rome. The location was near the Spanish Steps. Even after the pandemic, the area had been bustling with civilians and protestors. You and Q had been in charge of guiding them to the location,

“You’d think during this pandemic, these bloody idiots would stay inside.” Bond said as he moved past the crowd of angry protestors. He wiped dust off of his grayish-blue suit. Safin’s message of tidying the world of “corruption” sent shivers down any sane person’s spine.

Nomi was ahead of him, dressed in a white chic jumpsuit and cat sunglasses. “The wicked never sleep, Bond.”

He huffed, frustrated. Of course, when his vacation had been occurring Q would call for his aid. “Q, how much further?”

“Maybe if you would pick your pace, then you would get there in four minutes instead of forty.” Q responded.

C could hear Nomi chuckle, and followed along with her.

Bond annoyingly huffed, “I truly haven’t missed your remarks, Q.”

“Gentlemen, settle down.” You interrupted, able to see where the agents were through the bodycams. “Keep your guard up. Your getting stares from some protestors. Oh, and do pick up the pace.”

The two agents squeezed through the crowd. Nomi had noticed them being followed. But thanks to Q, they lost them through Rome’s small puzzle-like streets. Upon losing them, the agents had left the lavish streets of Rome and into the more sketchy and depressed areas. The further they walked the more life began to disappear. Bond and Nomi stuck out in there designer outfits in the slums of Rome.

“On your right,” You stated. The agents stopped, looking upon the building. Nomi took her glasses off to examine the building. It was broken down, dark, and covered by boards.

Bond sighed, “Bloody hell. This it?”

“Unfournelty,” Q said. “Head in the back, there’s an open entrance.”

Nomi and Bond turned to the back of the building, noticing a piece of wood covering the wood. Bond attempted to move it, but his age was beginning to show. The young and muscled Nomi tore it down, letting them enter the broken down building. On the side, it was dark and empty. Shining the light of his rifle, Bond noticed a kitchen that was covered in dust and spiderwebs.

Q and C heard faint noises, which sounded like music. Nomi moved close to the stairs and could hear it coming from the upstairs. Along with the music was a light.

“See anything, double oh eight?” You asked, looking through her bodycam. The song sounded Italian. It could have been singing, or just a record player.

“A light. You think we have company?” She asked, pointing her rifle upstairs.

“Seems like it. Investigate, Keep your weapons at bay.” Q ordered.

Bond had led him and Nomi up the creaky wooden stairs. The music had become much louder. At the end of the hallway was a door closed, with light emanating under it. The two agents tiptoed to the door. Bond placed his ear against it, hearing only the sweet Italian love song. Q and C couldn’t tell what was behind that door. It could be Safin, his goons, anything.

Counting down to three, Bond and Nomi kicked the door down, guns prepared for anything. But the room was empty. It had been lite by a few candles with a CD boombox, blasting a loud Italian song. Bond examined the room for anything suspicious while Nomi went over, kicking the boombox quiet. She picked up the CD player, examining the front.

“E’ la vita?” The female agent muttered, turning the DVD over. The other side had been written in morse code. C found this odd, squinting her eyes to see. The handwriting was neat and done in an expensive ink. Not only was there writing, but it seemed like it was a list of more global cities. It seemed oddly familiar. “Why waste good ink on a CD?”

“Double oh eight, can you r-”

Bond interrupted, “BOMB! GET DOWN!”

All C could remember is Bond running towards Nomi to cover her before both of there bodycams had glitch out. She panicked, trying to reconnect to them. Q had a status of all of the double oh’s, and each of there bodycams began to flicker out. Then Q and you had realized the worst of it.

Safin had set them up.

“Fuck. It was a fucking trap.” You huffed, running a hand through your hair. They had truly hit a dead end. “Q, any signal? I can’t reach them.”

“None. I’m trying to get their signals. There cams both locked out before the explosion.” Q replied. He was just as frustrated as his co-worker. Suddenly, both of there computers froze with glitched screens. “Not only was it 007 and 008, but the other double oh’s went out.”

C could hear Q cursing under his breath, the sounds of him furiously clicking his keyboard. “Shit, Shit, Shit..”

“Q, what is it?”

“He hacked us. Safin inflated the sys-”

Just like Bond and Nomi, Q’s signal that gone out. It had all be planned. Safin wanted for all of us to happen. The other agents had probably been killed. Sitting in front of a glitched-out screen, you let out a small sigh and slumped back into her chair. Singlehandedly, you had fucked up.

“Not such a clever girl now, are we?”

Raising your shoulders, y/n arched her neck back to avoid the sharp blade that was too close for comfort. The voice was velvety with a slight accent to it. From the videos M16 had received, you knew it all too well.

It was Safin himself.

“I-it was a trap..” You stuttered, unable to talk to the knife around your neck. Safin’s hand was on C’s shoulder, holding her from getting up. C heard footsteps from behind. Great, now you were truly defenseless, being held by the world’s most feared Anarchist. In the corner of your eye, y/n saw the white mask he wore to conceal his identity. It looked like a porcelain doll prop straight out of a horror film. “A fucking trap.”

“Your little friends are gone now, No one is here to protect you now” Safin whispered into your ear. He was too close for comfort. He took an inhale of your Chanel perfume, admiring your breathing pattern. He thought y/n was so gorgeous this close. After months of waiting, Safin was so close to her, yet far. The woman who had threatened to bring down him was now enwrapped in his arms with a knife to her neck. But she wasn’t scared. Her breathing was heavy, but Safin had noticed that she was rather calm for having a blade held to her throat.

You chuckled at his “weak” response, “I have your locations all on record. M16 will bring you to your knees, you monster.”

“A monster?” He marveled, amused by Y/n’s comment. This man was a true psychopath. “My dear, you truly live up stubbornness. You lead all of those double oh’s into there demise. How innocent does that make you feel?”

“Says the one who wants to kill millions.” Y/n hissed, venom in her voice. You felt the guilt pull at your heart. “I saw your plan. You’re killing Europe city by city. Fooling the post soviet states and moving up towards the Medterrian. Your delusional.”

“Your ignorance is their power.” He purred into her ear. He massaged y/n’s shoulder to relax her (as he held her down). “You are a very talented girl, wasting her intelligence on foolish old m--”

Seeing him lose his guard, you reached for your mug full of hot coffee and threw it back at his mask. He lost his footing and fell backward as the lower piece of his mask cracked off. Wasting no time, you pushed yourself up and ran behind the desk to the front entrance. Q’s flat wasn’t far away. If you took the right routes and stayed out of action, then he could help her. As she neared towards the entrance, a sharp sting echoed through your knee to your thigh. Tripping on the edge of your carpet, your tripped and scraped your head against a coffee table, falling to the ground. You tried to stay awake and fight, but eventually succumbed to the darkness.

Safin pushed himself up, noticing that the bottom part of his mask showed his chin and lips. He turned to see y/n’s body by the door, her navy slacks stained by blood.

Safin cursed under his breath, walking over to her body to check if she had a pulse. Thankfully you did, but it was light. “Who shot her..?”

His henchmen did not respond, holding their weapons.

“I SAID WHAT ONE OF YOU IMBECILES SHOT HER?” Safin yelled, pure fury in his voice.

One of the men, donned in black and holding a sniper rifle, stepped forward. “It was me, Safin. You said tha-”

The man with the sniper rifle was shot in the neck and fell backward, choking on his own blood. Each of the henchmen jumped back. They knew when Safin raised his voice that he was going to die.

A small sigh escaped Safin’s lips as he pushed back his hair. Safin turned to face Serrano, his right-hand man. He was tall and lean with dark skin and emerald eyes. “Serrano..”

“Yes, Safin?”

“What did I explicitly say to you to tell these idiots before we entered C’s flat?”

Serrano responded, “Not to bring her back dead, but alive and injured.”

“And what do type of girl do you see laying on the ground?” The anarchist pointed to the ground, showing Y/n’s body. She had a bruise on her forehead and a bloody thigh.

“An injured girl, sir,” Serrano replied, looking down in embarrassment.

There was an awkward between the anarchist and this men before he commanded, “The lot of you, take the girl and prepare the car. Serrano, wipe all of her devices and anything that can track her. We leave on the submarine by dusk.”

The men nodded as the muscule grabbed C’s motionless body and carried her out. Serrano destroyed her phone, computer, and any camera or electronic that lingered in the flat before they left the crime scene. Entering the range rover, Serrano sat in the front with the driver while Safin sat in the back with the unconscious Cryptographer.

As they began to drive to the docks, Serrano asked, “Safin, what do you see in this girl? She is not James Bond or Madeleine Swann.”

“I see a source of information. This girl is not some receptionist or analyst.” Safin explained as he looked at her sleeping body. Your face was more relaxed than it was thirty minutes ago. There was something so intriguing about the Cyrptographer that Safin couldn’t pinpoint. “She fell into her very own trap, letting us access all of the M16 databases. M16 just lost there most valuable asset.”

“A bargaining chip?” Serrano questioned.

“Not just a bargaining chip, but an intelligent girl who is going to be vital to us.” He explained, “Unlike Bond, she is not redundant. She has many values, I know of it. You will see, Serrano. The world will open it eyes to y/n.”

Safin couldn’t take his eyes off of you. The remaining sunlight from the purple sunset shined on her face. Seeing your face, he knew Y/n not only ordinary on the inside but the outside. A woman that was much younger than he was made him feel less bitter about the world. He had a lonely life and seeing a young and beautiful such as yourself made him drop everything to the floor. The way your floral smelling [y/h/t] [y/h/c] hair fell out of the small bun and rested on your shoulders, [y/s/c] glowed in the sunlight, and the sweet aroma you wore drove Safin mad. Unknown to your knowledge, he had been watching over you for quite some time. You had a desk job, but occasionally accompanied the double oh’s and even had taken out some of his henchmen in the past. Y/n was a girl who not only knew how to decrypt some of the hardest codes to M16 but could defend herself if needed. Safin’s mere intrguement with you had grown into an obsession. Now the woman he obsessed over was sitting less than a foot away from him. Upon seeing the cryptographer, he knew that he needed you. He wanted y/n more than anything in the world. M16 didn’t deserve such talent. In Safin’s eyes, all they had ever done for y/n was hold her back from being your best self; by his side.

“I’m sorry they hurt you.” He cooed, pushing a glossy lock to get a better view of y/n’s face. “I have freed you from there incompetence. I know you will demand to leave and mindlessly say that you hate me. But I promise you my sweet, you will grow to like me and your new home.”

Safin felt like he was the luckiest man in the world.
