My fav snowbaz fic/art I’ve done… What a great question! I’m notoriously bad at valuing my own creations, so this is pretty hard. And since I’m incapable of answering a simple question with a simple answer…

Below the cut is an extremely overly-detailed explanation of my choices, along with a deep-dive into all the research I did for “So This Is Christmas” ⬇

Let’s start with the art:

I liked a few of the Inktobers I did, perhaps particularly because they’re not my usual method, and therefore I’m mentally filling in the blanks on what it ideally could look like, had I done it digitally… (As opposed to my digital stuff, which always falls short, in my eyes.) (At least this way I’m giving myself the benefit of the doubt haha…)

So, I’ll narrow it down to these three:

As far as for my fave fics I’ve written… that one’s hard, too! I get embarrassed by my writing, worried about my characterization, and torment myself by basting in the fear of being seen, etc…

I think I’ll have to go with “So This is Christmas”, with “What Stays and What Fades Away” as a close second.

WS&WFA is also a super niche choice… and while Wayward Son means that pretty much none of the characterizations are “correct” any longer, I’m still proud of it as a piece of storytelling because it was my first time writing anything bigger than “just” a romance. There are a lot of moving parts to that fic, all of which I was incredibly strung out about. I’m not saying it’s the best or anything, but I’m pleased I managed to accomplish what I did! (There was a lot of research that went into this fic, too—where Baz was being kept, etc—but I’ll spare you.)

The Christmas fic I definitely feel pretty good about, though! It’s a whirlwind, and I struggled a lot with trying to balance “is this too much? is this not enough?”. It’s difficult to get such a mule-headed character to bend his ways so quickly while his whole world-view comes crashing down! There are likely many ways I could have done it more successfully, but I think it came together all right.

I also did an embarrassing amount of research on that fic, which should maybe induce more shame than it does pride, 😂

Originally I was going to tuck them someplace up north in a semi-secluded motel. It still had the same story beats: Mage walks in on them; they run away (no teleporting—just legging it for the rail station, with Baz withdrawing whatever he could from a cash machine); all the phone conversations; slowly Simon falls in love; they decide to go back. The struggle was trying to come up with things they could do together other than just fighting in the motel room all day… And then WS came out and gave us more motel heartbreak than any of us signed up for, so I considered it a sign that I should scrap that idea!

I went hard the other direction instead. I figured, well hey, Baz is That Bitch and would totally drain his bank account to have this one holiday of bliss with Simon. And so then the idea of snooker came to mind. And Christmas markets (that would be open on the 22nd). And it would have to be in Hampshire, since I committed to the teleportation-escape idea, and I needed a way for them to get to Baz’s house fairly quickly…

And so my hunt for a central spot that could fulfill my ever-growing list of demands began.

Every location they go to is real. They take the cab to Winchester, hit up the Barclays and Enterprise and then circle back to the McDonald’s that Simon spotted:

That particular Enterprise offers a blue Mercedes C Class, so I went under the assumption that they have carried that make and model of automobile long enough for Baz to have rented it in 2014. Here’s the 2013 model, which is what I figure he got:

Then they drive to New Forest and stay at the Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa. All of the activities they do, all the food they eat—it’s all real stuff on offer there (as of my research in 2019). That includes the little 10-minute walk to the beach! Here’s the view of the back, which is where their room looked out upon the croquet lawn:

I wanted them to have a white Christmas (Simon even makes a mention of it early on…), but the weather there in December 2014 was too warm! So instead they went to the beach~

Their day out is in Southampton at the Westquay shopping centre. The esplanade is converted into an ice rink in the winter. In the pic below, you can see the shopping centre on the left, the medieval wall remnants on the right, and the Alpine Bar is tucked in the back of the rink (where you see the warm yellow light).

There’s a Hugo Boss store inside the shopping centre, which is where Baz gets all this for Simon:

And the Southampton Christmas market that they walk to is very closeby. All of the stalls and vendors they check out are real (for 2018, anyway—that’s as far back as I could find). So the gifts are all things they really could have picked up there~

I’m probably forgetting stuff, but that’s the gist! As it is, this is undoubtedly way more information than anyone needed, 🙃 

Fun fact: in mid-December, I spent a few days in London and then went to Nottingham for my sister’s graduation (got her masters!). I was supposed to be doing research on what things we would want to do while there, but I kept getting my wires crossed with all the fic research, 😂

I was extremely excited that we stumbled upon a Christmas market in Nottingham! It was lovely (and the mulled wine was great).

How to boost your online presence?

In the last couple of weeks, I had the opportunity to attend a series of seminars organized by Gorge Brown College. One of them was quite interesting for me, due to its speaker (Jake Hirsh-Allen) who had a bast experience in different industries…

His talk started by giving a short introduction about his experience and how through the years he was interested in helping others and working for the public sector.

Nowadays, he’s working for LinkedIn Learning, trying to develop partnerships for the educational industry, by leveraging free learning resources for students in North America.

This experience has helped him to deeply understand LinkedIn, and how to optimize a CV or Resume on this digital platform. His advice was interesting to me, due to the actual situation in which I’m trying to find a new job that helps me develop all the skills I acquired thanks to the Strategic Relationship Marketing Program.

These are some of the recommendations that Jake gave us:

1-      Are we creating a Digital Identity online?

He recommended to us search our names in incognito mode on Google, to verify our LinkedIn profile is the first result out there. His advice was to craft an online identity in a way that we can’t in person, by equalizing our strengths.

2-      Differences between CV, Resume, and LinkedIn profile

CV: A long CV will be quickly rejected; we can have a max of two pages or if it’s possible maybe just one. It will also depend on the industry we are interested to apply.

Resume: It’s a short CV

LinkedIn profile: It’s in between the 2, we should put all the information about all the roles we’ve done, because recruiters search for keywords and skills, and then they use those skills to rank profiles and define the final candidates to interview.

3-      Finding jobs in a different country

It’s important to try to understand the culture, and what kind of norms and best practices are used in the city or country that we are trying to apply.

4-      LinkedIn Headline

It should be used to try to capture recruiters’ attention rather than just putting your position or industry.

5-      Focus on what’s relevant

Genius ways to arrange your kitchen appliances

Planning a new kitchen? Our kitchen appliance layout ideas will help you maximise your space and make cooking, cleaning and family mealtimes so much easier.

When it comes to positioning your appliances, there are plenty of potential pitfalls. Always burning yourself when getting things out of the oven or not able to open your fridge door properly? You’ll know exactly what we mean.

With all those nightmare scenarios in mind, we’ve put together some clever ideas that will make you kitchen easier to use and help maximise your space.

1. Conceal the cooker hood

There’s no need to make the cooker hood a feature in your kitchen. A discreet extractor installed above a cooker in an alcove will make the most of an awkward space.

2. Go for symmetry

Bookend appliances such as your ovens and integrated fridge-freezer either side of your hob if your space allows. This will ensure that food items and utensils are where you need them when cooking and the symmetry will create a calm, cohesive look.

3 Make it sociable

If you’d like the island to create a division between your dining and kitchen and space, think about situating your hob there. That way you can keep an eye on kids doing their homework or chat to them while you’re cooking.

4. Get them off the floor

So your dishwasher has to sit under your worktops, right? Not necessarily. Consider raising it a bit higher, and you’ll find loading and unloading it so much easier. The height of your oven is also crucial. Site it too low or too high and you might struggle to retrieve heavy casserole dishes, or pull out a tray of meat for basting.

5. Put all your appliances on one wall

This is a favourite approach of kitchen designer Michael Wright of Michael Wright Furniture. ‘It adds wow factor,’ he says, ‘and because the wiring is concentrated in one area, it’s an easier job for your electrician and delivers a cleaner, smarter looking room. You can incorporate everything from a fridge freezer to a wine cooler, oven, grill, microwave, coffee machine, steam oven and warmer drawer – and yes, some kitchens will have all of those!’

6. Create a bank of ovens

Having ALL your appliances in one bank relies on you having a space large enough. If you don’t, cluster them by type – putting ‘hot’ appliances, such as your oven, hob and microwave, together.

If you do this, stick with one brand of appliance. Manufactures like Whirlpool, Miele and Baumatic invest heavily in making sure that the control panels, control knobs, badges, handles, displays and doors all align, so that they look symmetrical and elegant in any configuration.

Just remember that they’ll all have digital displays with clocks. Synchronising them will be a labour of love, but if you don’t, that minute’s difference can prove very distracting.

7. Have a wet zone

‘Ideally, position your washing machine and dishwasher/tumble dryer either side of your sink,’ says Chris Mossop, kitchen designer at Harvey Jones. ‘Having your plumbing in one place will make life easier both when you’re having your kitchen fitted and if any issues develop down the line.’

8. Make the cooker a focal point

‘Make the cooker the central focus of the room, if possible,’ advises Harvey Jones’ Matthew Payne. ‘The primary function of the kitchen is to cook; the other appliances are all there to support this.’

9. Move your washing machine elsewhere

If space is tight in the kitchen, take a tip from the Europeans and site your washing machine in the bathroom. There are tough rules on this, however, so we asked Steve Corbett, marketing manager at CDA, for advice. ‘To comply with British Standard regulations, the washing machine has to be at least 3m away from the bath or shower,’ he says. ‘You’ll also need an electrician to check that its plug socket is properly RCD protected.’

In other words – you’ll need a BIG bathroom. Alternatively, Steve suggests that if you have a separate toilet, you could move the loo into the bathroom and turn the space into a mini utility room. Or put the washing machine into a garage, spare bedroom or hall (see above).

10. Your fridge and ovens can be closer than you think

Traditionally, designers advised against putting the fridge next to the oven as it would have to work extra hard to hold its temperature, wasting energy. But things are changing, which is good news if you have a very awkward space.

‘I’d say this is now only an issue if you’re into Feng Shui,’ says Matthew Payne. ‘Technology has improved and today, all good appliances tend to be self-contained and well insulated, and shouldn’t omit much heat or coolness.

‘However, if you position your fridge next to an oven stack, I’d ensure you include a small 50mm filler just to be safe,’ Matthew adds. Also, I’d still be wary if you’re installing low-budget appliances, where such technology is limited.

11. Put the microwave at eye level

A microwave is often thought of a necessary evil, although to give them credit, today’s models often incorporate features like steam and grill functions, making for much healthier food. And as any busy mum or dad will tell you, they are a lifesaver when the kids are hungry.

If you’d rather yours didn’t hog space on a worktop, why not install it at eye level. It’s still simple enough to retrieve your bowls and dishes, and you’ll be able to keep tabs on food as it’s cooking – bubbling-over beans or soup should soon be a thing of the past.

13. Float your extractor

Another trick used by Michael Wright, this involves setting your extractor into a wall panel, possibly in a contrasting colour or timber to rest of your units. ‘This is an easy way to hide away any wiring, and the panel doubles as a giant splashback,’ he explains.

Floating or not, the extractor needs to be positioned directly above the hob and ideally should be wider than the hob for the best efficiency. And speaking of efficiency, a ducted extractor that vents directly outside will perform far better than a recirculation one, therefore try to position it on an external wall of your house, as you’ll need less ugly ducting.
