who is barbara thompson?

she's my oc and the Love Of My Life, aka jack thompson's future wife, aka peggy's girlfriend, aka the political acumen behind the senator thompson ticket.

she and jack met in the canon that lives in my head in the mid-50s because she was a young lawyer and political advisor in dc and he was running for a senate seat that his father set up for him. she ended up being one of jack's campaign managers and they casually date for a while until they both just kind of ... decide to get married.

she is definitely the driving force behind senator jack thompson. everything jack says, does or lobbies for is run by barbara first and i love that for him.

"I think," Peggy says slowly, considering her words. "That you are much preferable to Vernon Masters, in terms of being the person pulling Jack's strings."

part of why i love barbara is that she's probably aromantic very much someone who is very matter of fact in appreciating people for their good traits without being blind to their faults. this, as you can imagine, is a good skill to have when you are married to jack thompson.

she and peggy sleep together on and off for most of the time they know each other; jack's aware of it, he's a bit jealous because he's jack but mostly thinks its kinda hot. jack and barbara end up having four kids, all of them girls, who grow up considering peggy to be like an aunt.

a bit of a barbara thompson/jack's family dynamics headcanon: jack wants peggy to be his best maid in his wedding and jack's mom (who hates peggy for justified, she-spied-on-your-father's-involvement-with-the-council-in-an-attempt-to-ruin-him reasons) refuses to allow it. so barbara is like, great! she'll be one of my bridesmaids instead. the ensuing fight comes very close to disrupting the whole ceremony, except that it turns jack and barbara into more of a united front. and so peggy is responsible for almost ruining their wedding but also solidifying their marriage.

I love this! I love firecracker characters who don't take things lying down, and Barbara standing up to the Thompson seniors is just perfect. Also I think Jack has an, at best, strained relationship with his parents, and anyone who takes advantage of their outsider position and/or stands in his corner against his parents, he's gonna love them.

very vivid scene in my head. thompson's future wife, barbara, is confronted by opposition senator's aide with pictures of her husband cheating on her! with a hot mystery brunette! Who Could This Be!

only problem is the only pictures they could manage to sneakily get of jack and peggy's clandestine dinner together are 1. peggy baring her teeth at him in aggravation while he smirks at her, 2. jack with his eyes bugging out, frozen in the middle of loudly arguing against something while peggy looks mildly annoyed, and 3. a single shot of both of them sipping their drinks and glaring in opposite directions.
