Note
bestie im going to melb and as a local do u have any recommendations for stuff we should do while were there?
FYCK YESSSSSS COME TO MELBOURNE!!!!!!! okay heres my exorbitant mostly food related list (note these places are almost all in the CBD):
coffee/matcha:
if you like coffee, best locations in the CBD are little rogue on drewery lane nearby melbourne central station, and tbh any coffee joint along flinders lane
if you don't like coffee but like matcha or houjicha, drop by little rogue or tori's on niagara lane!! puzzle coffee (there's one on swanston st and in melbourne central station) is also tasty
i've also heard good things about naau's matcha - they're off russell st but i haven't been there myself
breakfast/brunch/bakery:
if you want to try a classic melb brunch, try hardware lane! there's a few places in the laneway and it feels very melbourne
also on drewery lane is bakemono - an adorable little bakery that does amazing melonpan! but they sell out quick and get busy, so you want to get there by 10am at the latest
(can you tell laneways are our culture)
okay i know they opened elsewhere in australia now but LUNE is great... love the croissants....... JC patisserie boulangerie is further north but a quick train ride away - heard great things!
if you want a fun time........ hopetoun tearooms!! SOO CUTE even just the cake window is worth a look. if you want high tea you gotta book out ages in advance, but if you don't mind waiting a little they take walk ins! perfect for an afternoon pot of tea and tasty cake
more lunchy-places:
look, anywhere on degraves st will get you there, and it's also a classic tourist spot! walk down and see the most quintessential melbourne laneway there is!
if you want american-themed fare, bowery to williamsburg FUCKS i had a stunning reuben there.
tbh i rarely actually have lunch, i just get brunch... so all the recommendations above can double
dinner or lunch restaurants:
soooo i love ramen so if you do too, ikkoryu fukuoka ramen is top tier! i love their yuzu ramen. hakata gensuke is good if you like chicken ramen, and shujinko ramen (rip the flinders st store) is good if you're going up elizabeth st and want affordable
mensho tokyo ramen opened recently but uhhhhh the wait has been 3 to 5 hous somedays. ITS POPULAR. ippudo in QV is probably easier and more convenient
outside of ramen, if you want more fancy fancy farmer's daughters is STELLAR. delicious food, great cocktails, mm. nice modern aussie dining. longrain nearby is also very popular!
also vaguely upmarket is chinchin - good curry! the waiters market is a place that my mum hugely recommend before shows but ive never managed to get there myself lmao.
not ramen but still japanese is dohtonbori.. ever wanted to mix and flip your own okonomiyaki? now's the time
I WANT TO GO TO THE NATURAL HISTORY PUBLIC BAR. it's also a restaurant set to look like the american museum of natural history, if you go pls have fun
bubbletea, its own category:
this is just a list.
milksha, the alley lujiaoxiang, machi machi, coco. these are all good. chatime is fine but gongcha is better but theyre the chains so... i really want to go to choulee!! i heard theyre good
desserts:
hokkaido baked cheese tart, black star patisserie, pafu, kurimu, uncle tetsu's, brunetti's for cakes and later nights, sulhwa, and bingsu.
further out or more expensive but fun:
i need to go to milk the cow so BAAAD. there's one in st kilda, which is a short tram ride from flinders st station. if you go lmk
places to visit:
the botanical gardens!! pretty, always a nice time
the NGV likely has some free exhibits going on! always a nice wander
you gotta stop by hozier lane. you gotta. and wander around fed square while you're at it
drewery lane also has some artwork!
a walk down birrarung marr is also nice, sometimes there's night markets going on by the stadiums
the docklands has some alright places, but i know less about it... but they have a ferris wheel rn! check it out!
if you wanna spend thirty or more bucks, go up the eureka tower!! tallest building, and you can get a cool view of the city. the edge experience is a little lift that sticks out the building so you can stare down through glass to the ground below. fun if you aren't afraid of heights
if you like shopping, emporium is fancy and has a MEEQ store where you can buy jellycats
you can go to the queen victoria market if you wanna.... its a classic destination after all
THE LUME is a classic experience here too rn - more exxy but if you want a fun visual experience, do it!
if you want comics - check out all star comics! best LCS in the area.
other specific stores i recommend:
gewürzhaus! there's one in block arcade off collins st, i love it and the spices
not far from gewürzhaus is essensorie - they discon'd my fave handcream SOB but they have some nice things (this is all in the black arcade, same as hopetoun)
and with that, tbh check out all the arcades? they have fun things going on!! there's the block arcade, royal arcade with gog and magog, tivoli arcade... that is to say they're little indoor walkways with shops and stores, as in an arcade you walk through! they're cute
bourke st mall is worth a wander, and you can see the outside of the old post office that's now a H&M...
i know you said "things to do" but... all i do is eat mostly LMAO!!
really, the best thing to do is give yourself a day or two for the CBD. just wander, it's all a grid and easily navigable, and take advantage of the free tram zone!!!! it'll announce when it isn't so you know to touch on your myki or not, i'm not a cop.
you could also wander down to crown at night, southbank has many restaurants and also the flames outside crown fucketh severely
if you're going outside the CBD, its an hours or so drive but healesville sanctuary is soo fun.. and on the way there you can stop by kuranga nursery, it's a gorgeous little place and the paperbark cafe does a bunch of tasty meals with native flavours and bushtucker
if you'll be in the suburbs i have more recommendations too!! but for those just message ma and i'll share so this list isn't crazier than it is xx HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!

AMY’S BRIDGES
Tumblr media
how are you supposed to cross the river in east london?
tower bridge is the last bridge over the thames until the big ol’ suspension bridge way further out. everything else here is tunnels (mostly)
for road tunnels, there’s the rotherhithe tunnel - the tenth most dangerous tunnel in europe due to lax safety features, where large vehicles including busses are banned, and “a rare example of a road tunnel where traffic, pedestrians and cyclists all share the same bore”. for the love of sin, don’t go in that hole. then there’s the blackwall tunnel for road traffic only, which only one bus route uses, and it’s under-construction neighbour the silvertown tunnel, the road traffic-only worst tunnel ever that’ll increase congestion in the docklands, won’t benefit drivers with an easier route, and won’t ease congestion out of blackwall due to not offering alternative modes bar busses
so, then there’s the tunnel of the windrush line, crossing from rotherhithe to wapping and connecting to the DLR and the jubilee. but this line serves central-south london, not south east, where it doesn’t connect to anything. its utility as a crossing in-and-of-itself is really only for the people very close to it anyway. but there’s the jubilee - when approaching from waterloo way on this is a good connection to canary wharf and the dlr. but its last station before the tunnel is at canada water, over a kilometre before the river. it’s worthless as a crossing. out of north greenwich (aka Dome) it’s got two tunnels to canary wharf and canning town - but the only reason you’ll have to cross the river there is if you happen to find yourself on the peninsula. which is why it’s fucking ridiculous that mayor disgraced journalist racist cunt built his zip line there - basically fucking mirroring a route between two tube stations. there is the elizabeth at the end of the docklands, but i don’t know if anyone would use it for the only purpose of crossing the river there, because it’s served by the only ray of hope, the DLR, which plugs greenwich into canary wharf and woolwich into the royal docks. and that’s yer lot
SO
with such awful crossings, the two halves are totally blown apart. road traffic needs to happen, yes, but in a dense cityscape people need to be on the transit systems to reduce the burden. what can we do?
the pool of london is dead. big ships do not need to go up there. london bridge has a clearance of ~9m for river boats, so any bridge we build further out doesn’t need any more clearance. this does mean the Belfast will have to move, unless we’re okay with trapping her in. the top of rotherhithe to limehouse is the best place for a mass transit-only bridge, it may be narrower than tower bridge, and connect two areas that are totally splayed open. there should be some sort of transit mode going vertically from limehouse (for the dlr), up mile end and forking to either hackney or stratford, and down to surrey quays, and then forking to greenwich for the dlr there and west laterally, either north-ish up to elephant & castle or south-ish to brixton, or better yet, both. i say mode because a lot of things could work here, but the best would be a mix of things. here’s my idea
amy fuck presents the Limehouse Bridge
Tumblr media
with a length-over-water of 250m, this carfree bridge connects a major transit avenue to an area prime to host connections for the people of southeast london. from the centre of limehouse, exactly where the rotherhithe tunnel’s bendy route emerges, the road south intersects with Cycle Superhighway 3. from CS3, we’ll bulldoze the tired-looking building blocking the view, and fly over to rotherhithe, bulldozing some gentrified townhouses to cut past a playing field to have plugged in to both rotherhithe street and salter road
i propose two primary pubtrans modes using the bridge: the dlr, and trams. expanding the heavy tram network, often more akin to light rail, will be vital to making the transit of central-south london as good as the north, and connecting up the dlr will cement its use in the southeast as well as the northeast
i’ll cover my dlr proposals first, though, perhaps the name docklands would have to be dropped at this point. with possibly a light rail route up north, from the limehouse bridge the light rail network can return round surrey quays to connect into greenwich, creating a vital and necessary corridor. in addition, from greenwich the route can continue to woolwich and the thamesmead extension, creating a lateral backbone to ensure usage of the dlr’s tunnels rather than the road tunnels. in addition, the lateral routes can provide vital transport for the greater southwark area with two branches, one forming a new corridor to elephant & castle, through an area with appalling connections relative to its centrality, maybe even continuing onwards to waterloo or vauxhall, or even to parliament itself. the second is to serve as an area backbone for communities, through bermondsey, peckham, camberwell and brixton, perhaps continuing to battersea or closing the loop at vauxhall. the limehouse bridge will be the linchpin of this new system, its connectivity bringing rotherhithe and the surrey quays to life, becoming a counterweight of humanity against the looming towers of canary wharf
Tumblr media
the heavy tram systems i propose, however, i will not illustrate. because i believe they should spread out from their start in wimbledon, croydon and beckenham to form a much larger network for south london, replicating, surpassing the north’s tube, much larger than i can draw today. from limehouse bridge, the heavy tram network can integrate the areas south of the brixton spoke: crystal palace, dulwich, norwood, streatham, clapham, tooting, bromley, lewisham
all of which leaves limehouse bridge: pedestrians, cycle superhighway, light rail, heavy tram, no motor vehicles. a triumph of modern planning, the aorta of the east
so with the dlr from this bridge serving the greenwich and deptford regions, no more crossings will be needed here due to the dlr’s tunnel at the end of the isle of dogs. it’s all plugged in - and the dome has the jubilee tunnels, which could be co-opted by any new over-ground “underground” lines to serve the area if they are needed. destroy the fucking cable car. fell it. yell timber
prioritising those heavy trams now, we can connect charlton through silvertown and eastenders with a new tunnel. with the unnecessary silvertown road tunnel opening 2025, more road connections aren’t needed. so - pubtrans from charlton to newham - then heavy trams in the tunnel like it’s a miniature channel tunnel. also feature pedestrian and cycle access, obviously
there had been suggestions that the suffragette line (formerly the goblin) after barking riverside might cross the river to thamesmead, where that dlr extension might go. do it. this has to be commuter rail now, as we’re threading suburbs together. after that, we’re probably well served enough until the dartford suspension bridge
but… cars and road traffic are an unfortunate reality. with ground broken (or water broken?) on the silvertown tunnel, unholy amounts of heavy traffic are going to be funnelled through greenwich and poplar. removing passengers who can be removed can only help us so much. the unfortunate truth is a woolwich road bridge, replacing the ferry, is a good idea. toll it to high hell obviously, but it should help ease congestion that has now been caused by the silvertown. with plentiful other passenger connections, and ensuring anti-car policies are kept up to make sure only people with a damn good reason are driving through the area, this bridge could be helpful. but of course, without any of that, it would be a polluting, congesting disaster. but we were on a spending spree anyway
anyway. bridges

I sat back. “I’ve always been like this. Been me. Too thin, too weak. So I tried to just not be noticed, and mostly that worked. Except a work friend of my father’s visited last year. He was tall – over six feet, bald, working-out muscles more than real ones, a smile that mom said cost more than her car. Eugene Dockland.”
“I don’t know the name, or anyone like that,” Sally said into my silence.
“He shook my hand, like adults do and there was this spark. Like static electricity, but deeper and weirder through my whole body. He spent the rest of the night staring at me. I had a boyfriend. Teryn. We’d only been dating a few months, and it was a little akward in public as he was tall and I’m not. But Eugene’s stare was – wrong. Even dad asked him if he was all right, and he looked confused and then did a perfect smile-lie.
“Mom and dad swallowed his lie perfectly, even if it was nonsense. He looked at me after tha and there was this – he looked hungry. I fled to my bedroom, and he didn’t follow. I didn’t want him to find me. He never came back. I don’t know what mom and dad said: they never told me. But after that, people started to drift. Friends didn’t talk to me. People acted as if I wasn’t present. Teryn didn’t break up so much as just forget we were together. I didn’t understand any of it.
“Mom and Dad moved here because – because they forgot me too. I don’t know how it happened. I don’t know if Eugene did something. I don’t know if it was me, and I don’t know how to stop it. I got mom’s spare keys, came with them, but they don’t talk to me. Teachers forget me more than they don’t. I’m not invisible, but I’m forgettable. And last night mom and dad c-changed the locks. I got in, slept on the couch. They locked and barred my bedroom. I heard something about a priest last week. Maybe they think I’m haunting them, that they shouldn’t have remade my bedroom here?
“I don’t know. Sometimes they almost see me. And then they don’t, but I was able to – to work within that. I tried to be unseen, but I’m not and – I don’t.” My voice broke again.

Known for their rich spices, aromatic flavors, and diverse dishes, these cuisines offer a tantalizing experience for food lovers. If you are looking to explore the best Indian and Nepalese restaurants in Melbourne, this guide will take you on a flavorful journey through some of the city's most celebrated dining spots.
The Essence of Indian and Nepalese Cuisine
Indian cuisine is renowned for its bold use of spices, including cumin, coriander, turmeric, and cardamom, which create a symphony of flavors. From the fiery heat of a Vindaloo to the creamy richness of a Butter Chicken, Indian food is as diverse as the country itself. Each region offers its own unique dishes, such as the tandoori delights of the North or the coconut-infused curries of the South.
Nepalese cuisine, while sharing some similarities with Indian food, has its own distinct character. It blends influences from neighboring Tibet and China, resulting in dishes that are hearty, comforting, and often less spicy than their Indian counterparts. Nepalese food features ingredients like lentils, potatoes, tomatoes, and greens, with dishes such as momos (dumplings), dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), and gundruk (fermented leafy greens).

Day 8 - Buenos Aires
Today is Labor Day (May 1st) so most things will be closed. We get up and realise that we hardly have any pesos left oops! Cash is still king in Argentina - we can pay by card for most things but we will still need some cash for our remaining days. I go hunting for a Western Union and am delighted when I find one open but soon find out they have no cash. It’s apparently quite a common issue here that places will run out of notes. After trying a few I give up - we have a US$20 note to last us today.
We go to Recoleta cemetery where we have a guided tour prearranged with Simon. He is a British expat and has been living in Argentina for 27 years. He originally came here backpacking - that sounds familiar!
The tour is good - Simon is very quirky and explains all about how the bodies would have been treated before. He also explains stories about some of the many mausoleums. Some are very extravagant and would have cost the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of US dollars to build. Of course the most famous mausoleum is that housing the body of Eva Perón.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the tour the group are get annoyed by mosquitos - apparently BA has been really bad this summer for Mozzies but luckily this is our first encounter with them but they are so vicious!
We tip Simon the last of our cash and go and grab some pasta at a nearby restaurant for lunch. Unfortunately it’s not good - never mind you can’t win them all. All of the food we’ve had to far in Argentina has been great.
Now that we have some energy we walk to The Rose Garden - Floralis Genérica. This is a huge metal sculpture of a rose that originally opened and closed. However we realise when we get there we find it is broken - damaged by a recent storm.
Tumblr media
We aren’t having much luck today so grab an Uber back to the Airbnb for a cuppa.
The plan for this afternoon was to checkout Puerto Madero - it’s a docklands area of the city that has been revived with lots of waterfront bars and restaurants. However we are running out of time as we have another tour of Palacio Borolo booked for 5pm. We get an Uber there instead and use our free time to have a coffee. Palacio Borolo was built in the 1920s and is built using “new money”. The building is inspired by Dante’s Devine Comedy poem. The first floor represent hell, floors 1-14 represent purgatory and floors 15-22 of the building represents heaven. Our tour guide is so enthusiastic and we learn a bit more about how the representations work e.g. hell is decorated with dragons, purgatory has less decorations which at first appear as flowers but in actual fact are animals of some kind when you look closer. From purgatory you can throw your sins over the balcony down into hell (there are two floors per sin). Heaven has barely any decoration because this is seen as materialistic, plus there is lots of natural light. The highlight is getting to go to the lighthouse at the very summit of the building - the views of BA were great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the tour we get the Subte to Puerto Madero where we walk along the waterfront and stop in one of the restaurants. It’s our last night in BA so we go all out and order the 1.5kg tomahawk steak and a bottle of Malbec. We spend half of the meal fretting that we won’t be able to tip the waiter due to our cash situation (tips always seem to be done in cash here). In the end he was able to add it to the bill so we needn’t have worried!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had wanted to visit the suburb of San Telmo but we are yet again exhausted, my cold is getting worse and we need to pack our bags ready for an early flight tomorrow so we head home. On the way we find a McDonalds that is selling Dulce De Leche soft serve cones and of course Jack has to try this so we order one each.
