if I remember right, a year or two ago you made a list of recommendations for the Edinburgh Fringe. Any recommendations for this year? Already got Steffan on the list, obviously
I did! Okay, okay, here's what I've got this year. Caveat: I personally have not been up there yet (I'm going in a few days), but these are things I saw in preview/have heard great things about.
Steffan Alun: Free Standup, but at What Cost
Venue 156: PBH's Free Fringe @ Banshee Labyrinth - Banquet Hall, 21.30-22.30
Back again! Eighth Fringe, this. The show is an hour, but that includes a 15 minute warm-up act, then Steff for 45 mins. He does this so that reviewers won't come and ruin the vibe.
Anyway this year he talks a bit about being Welsh and how he is therefore grumpy with Bristolian Tesco self-checkout machines
.
Jake Baker: Rule Breaker!
Venue 78: PBH's Free Fringe @ Canons' Gait - Lower, 16.30-17.30
I love Jake, he's lovely. He's a gentle soul and has an excellent delivery style; very warm and deceptively witty. Normally he goes with Just The Tonic and is given a searing hot basement in the sky that smells of mould for a room, but this year he's in Canons' Gait, which is much much nicer.
His blurb: A rule-breaker, a risk taker, a wave-maker and a convention-shaker – all phrases never before used to describe Jake Baker. But when a frustrating game of Alan Turing-themed Monopoly leaves him questioning the laws of the game, he finds himself turning that analytical impulse to bigger things.
.
Stephanie Laing: Rudder
Venue 300: Underbelly, George Square - The Wee Coo, 14.50-15.50
This show is particularly Tumblr-friendly, actually; it's described as 'neurodiversity-led'. However, it's a show with a content warning, although all the ticket page is saying is "themes" (insert Stephen Fry meme here); so, <SPOILER> she talks about withdrawing consent while sleeping with a FIB, and him continuing anyway. She talks about it in a very gentle way, avoiding Big Words, and it's very heavy on aftercare </SPOILER>
Her blurb: A comedy dance show about balance. Stephanie has a history of falling over a lot, accidentally kneeing herself in the face, and falling in love with total kn*bheads. In this show she uses a mixture of stand-up and dance to talk about bodies, sex, dancing, liking yourself, consent and healing. Also, there are cartoon bears and burlesque.
.
Erin McKinnie: The Faff Chronicles
Venue 108: Hoots @ The Apex - Hoot 4, 16.50-17.50
An Edinburgh local! Good solid standup for those who like such things. New-ish, but one to watch, she's very good. Don't be surprised to see her take off
Her blurb: What a faff! Erin McKinnie, a rising star on the Scottish comedy circuit, talks about faffing through early adulthood – from rogue adventures to living the "below-deck life" on cruise ships – she finds the funny in every bizarre encounter in this uplifting show that asks: Do we really need a life plan? Or... are we all just winging it? A brilliant, snort-worthy giggle-fest about exiting your 20s, facing life indecision and chasing answers for those big questions, all the while trying to convince your mother that this is a real job...
.
Alexander Bennett: Emotional Daredevil
Venue 24: Gilded Balloon Patter House - Coorie, 18.20-19.20
Dark feelings show with a really positive, optimistic message and a fun concept. It uses audience participation, but that's not compulsory, you're safe.
Blurb: I'm the emotional daredevil, and for my next feat, I need someone's help. A show about risk, for the unsatisfied and traumatised, from a Chortle Award nominee
.
Alex Franklin: Gurl Code
Venue 61: Underbelly, Cowgate - Delhi Belly, 20.25-21.25
Alex does a fun thing each year where she takes her publicity budget and rather than spending it on publicity, she hides it somewhere in Edinburgh and then reveals a clue to its location every day. This tells you something about her, I think
Her blurb: In 2024, trans girl Alex (me) started HRT. Now she (me) feels the most alive she's (me's) ever felt; and she wants to make you feel alive too, or die trying. A ludicrous, musical, chaotic, joyful show about the colours of the world becoming slowly brighter and giving people furniture via the tube. Also being trans.
.
Character Building Experience
Venue 49: Bedlam Theatre - Bedlam Theatre, 20.00-21.00
It's a D&D show - the MC Sasha Ellen makes a bunch of 40-minute simple campaigns and a selection of pre-rolled characters to do them, and then gets three comedians each time to play them. You know the drill. Good quality fun, and different each time, since you'll never see the same campaign/comedian mix.
.
2 Truths, 1 Lie
Multiple venues and times (search the EdFringe app or website to see them all), but I recommend catching the 3pm show on either the 25th or 26th August at Venue 108: Hoots @ The Apex - Hoot 1 for reasons I shall not share here (ooh, mysterious)
Fun panel-like show! Often MC'd by Steff, especially if you catch one of the 3pm shows. The format is:
Three comedians each declare a statement. Two are true, but one comedian is lying. The MC doesn't know the liar, nor does the audience. The audience gets to ask questions of the comedians; at the end, they vote on who they think the liar is.
(The prize for winning is a smug sense of satisfaction.)
.
Anyway, once I'm up there I will possibly have more, but currently, that's my list

a kiss with a fist and such
i'm working on a lil somethin something where chilchuck and laios get into a fistfight at a bar and then make out. here's a really cringe aperitif to set up the conflict. it's pre-canon, i guess?? falin, namari and shuro are there. unfortunately for them.
nothing much happens in this excerpt but the final will involve romantic interests being violent to each other. i'd recommend not reading it if you're sensitive to that, but it's nothing too far outside the realm of what is portrayed in the manga lol
Laios had read volumes upon volumes of advice for the aspiring dungeon crawler and the content of this research could be summed up as thus: the party leader’s main objective is to keep everyone from killing each other before a monster can. The old king’s dungeon contained labyrinths that slithered like restless serpents, spike traps, false walls, beasts and enchanted baubles, but no trick more treacherous than pitting adventurers against one another. Why bother with conjuring monsters if you could simply torment your intruders until someone snapped? Sometimes a squabble over good loot was all it took for a party to dissolve.
Falin did most of the work in smoothing over the occasional interpersonal conflict, her calm smile and soft voice able to soothe even banshees, but there was only so much goodwill Laios’ kind little sister could afford him. Not everyone cared to learn the ins and outs of minotaur husbandry, or the complicated respiratory system of a seven-headed hydra, halfway down the magic murder hole. Laios didn’t really know what else there would be to talk about in a dungeon, though, so he often ran his mouth to fill the silence.
“Laios, if I hear one more fact about manticore scat I’ll make sure you’ll be living the dream.”
Chilchuck glowered up at Laios, hands on his hips, brows furrowed into a cute little crease.
“C’mon, it was relevant,” Laios said, cleaning his hands off with an already filthy handkerchief. “It’s fresh, so the monster’s nearby.”
“Fantastic news! I didn’t need a report on the texture. Let’s go.”
Chilchuck, the new hire, was an ornery sort. Good at his job—one would hope, with the astonishing upfront fee—but not with people. Laios could relate. A glance at the scrunched-up faces of Namari, Marcille and Shuro confirmed that Chilchuck wasn’t just bitching for the sake of it this time. He searched Falin’s strained grin for some backup, but she was at a loss.
Luckily, there were workarounds for the warrior in want of charisma.
“Cheer up, little guy.” A vein bulged out on Chilchuck’s forehead; Falin grimaced and mouthed an apology behind Laios’ back. “I’ll buy everyone a round at the tavern once the job’s done.”
Chilchuck debated holding the grudge, then sighed with a slumping of the shoulders.
“All the more reason to get a move on, then,” Namari said cheerily, glad to forget the scene they’d just witnessed. She clapped Chilchuck on the shoulder as she passed, staggering him out of his confrontational stance. He grunted and let it go, folding his hands behind his head and continuing down the tunnel.
“Nailed it,” Laios whispered to Falin, who met him with a congratulatory pat on the back. Wasting his cut of the profits on beer wasn’t wise with rent coming up, but the party’s cohesion was important, too. They’d managed to kill a green dragon last week, and it would be nice to keep that ball rolling.
“Good job, big brother! Um, next time, maybe don’t… call Chilchuck that.” “Why? I’m just trying to be friendly.” “Um… well, with half-foots, it’s sort of a-“
“C’mon, you two. Unless you want to get the bill after happy hour ends,” Chilchuck called, his small voice booming off the stone tiled walls. Laios jogged after the rest of the party, armor clanking as he went, with Falin not far behind.

The Good People(@grosutina) have demanded, and here it is!
Some Movie recommendations for all you beautiful bastards out there😘
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Starting off with some italian goodness:
Cinema Paradiso (theatrical cut) - this is THE homage to cinema for me, one of my favourite ever endings, and Ennio Morricone's score is muah!
:::
Il Postino / The Postman (good companion to Cinema Paradiso I think)
:::
Babettes gæstebud /Babette's Feast
:::
Amadeus (1984) (you know me, of course it's here)
:::
The Fall (the treatiest of treats for your eyeballs)
:::
Trois Couleurs / Three Colours Trilogy: Blue, White, Red
:::
Terry Gilliam's Imagination Trilogy:
Time Bandits
Brazil (the 142 minute long version, my friend @dongtopus you might like this one since you were getting into Kafka, it's the closest to a kafkaesque nightmare I've ever seen)
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
:::
La Grande Bellezza / The Great Beauty
:::
Dangerous Liaisons (recommend the book too it's a great read)
:::
Triple Feature of Irish Pain and Dark Comedy™ aka The Brendan Gleeson Cinematic Universe: Calvary (2014)

:::
Bonus Irish Pain™:
Hunger
In the Name of the Father
:::
And some Irish light fun to take a breather after those:
Waking Ned / Waking Ned Devine
:::
Some Michael Haneke cuz he's quickly becoming a favourite (warning: messed up and heavy content alert with this lad):
Funny Games (he directed both the 1997 og and the 2007 american remake, I've only seen the 97 one but I hear you're good with either, with the 2007 remake actually being closer to Haneke's vision)
La Pianiste / The Piano Teacher
Das weiße Band / The White Ribbon
:::
A Field In England (a recent fave, 12 days of shooting, 2 fields, clever editing and sound design gave birth to the best wizard battle put to film)
:::
El Laberinto del Fauno / Pan's Labyrinth (it isn't as talked about as other Guillermo del Toro films but it's still my favourite of his)
:::
The Seventh Seal (reminder to self to watch more Bergman, this is the only one of his I've watched shame on me)
:::
Some Van Gogh goodness:
Loving Vincent (fuck it 2 pics for this one cuz I can't choose)
At Eternity's Gate
:::
Some Claymation and stop motion goodness:
The Adventures of Mark Twain
Anomalisa
To be Continued...
#movies#my ramblings#I'm gonna try and include all sorts of different stuff#so sorry for the late response! theater has been consuming me#wait I lied I've seen Bergman's Magic Flute also

Sexiest Podcast Character — Scripted Bracket — Round 3
Propaganda
Mabel Martin (Mabel):
the girl half-burning!!! the bitch queen of hell!!! dead girl walking!!! rot-hearted girl!!!! consort to king anna limon!!!! lesbian icon!!!!
Who is doing it like Mabel Martin? No one. She's a lesbian. She is the lamb, and the knife. She is so loved that god herself tore a hole between worlds to find her again. She tore out her own veins to bargain with the house that holds her. She is the girl half-burning, she kept a bullet that came out of her (it was hers. she birthed it), she is the Labyrinth. And she is the Minotaur.
a vote for Mabel is a vote for insane codependent lesbians everywhere 👍 also for women with large noses (the hottest of women)
Oleta (Within The Wires: Season 1):
Amnesiac escapee getting walked through a way out of a dystopia by her girlfriend the narrator. Doesn’t actually say anything since she’s listening to the relaxation tapes but still! Listen to that narrator go.

Hello all!
I’ve been here for a while and have not yet done an intro post, so while it makes my heart heavy to unpin this post, I felt like I should.
I mostly just scream into the void here, and occasionally the void screams back and talks to me about Yellowjackets so that’s pretty neat
I use he/him, I’m Australian (AEST), and I don’t use tags because I can’t even organise myself to stand up half the time
I’ll occasionally post fanart but mostly it’ll just be reblogging/rambling to myself lol
I’m very nostalgic, it makes up a good 80% of my personality
I love flowers, filmmaking, art rock, vampires, poetry, absurdism & psychedelia
Fandoms/interests under the cut! 🩷
I listen to a LOT of music but my favourites are:
David Bowie
Florence + the Machine
Anaïs Mitchell
Hozier
Picture Parlour
The Last Dinner Party
The Beatles
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
The Doors
The Cranberries
Oh Pep!
Siouxsie & the Banshees
Chappell Roan
The Cure
PJ Harvey
The Crane Wives
Stevie Nicks
Kate Bush
Gracie Abrams
Jefferson Airplane
Sleep Token
Ethel Cain
Jeff Buckley
They Might Be Giants
The Smiths
Movies:
Edward Scissorhands
Dead Poets Society
The Breakfast Club
The Truman Show
Love & Mercy
Labyrinth
Television:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Yellowjackets
Interview With the Vampire
Derry Girls
Blackadder
The Good Place
Deadloch
Daisy Jones & the Six
How I Met Your Mother
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Books:
The Liar’s Dictionary
Jekyll & Hyde
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Anne of Green Gables
Ella Minnow Pea
The Picture of Dorian Gray
The Metamorphosis
Theatre, musical and otherwise:
Hadestown (but I’m a firm believer in concept album superiority)
Sweeney Todd
Les Mis
Jekyll & Hyde
The Producers
Hamilton (not as much anymore but I still love it)
Accidental Death of an Anarchist
Otherwise… I love 60s fashion, I wear a lot of long coats, and I could rant about Grigori Rasputin for hours at a time. T.S Eliot and Gwen Harwood are my favourite poets, Alphonse Mucha is my favourite visual artist and I have a soft spot for purple carnations
That’s pretty much all!

How 80s Rock (and rock in general) influenced The Sandman
Okay, this is a list that has been mostly confirmed. I won’t add speculation like “Robert Smith is the basis for Morpheus’s hair.” or “Peter Murphy is the basis for Morpheus.” This will only contain things that have been confirmed in various sources. Lucifer - Meant to look and sound like David Bowie circa 1969. (Confirmed multiple times by Neil Gaiman. In fact Michael Sheen is doing a David Bowie impersonation while voicing Lucifer for The Sandman audio drama adaptation. Neil Gaiman has even said that Gwendoline Christie looks more like David Bowie than Tom Ellis does.)
Death of The Endless - Originally Neil wanted her to resemble Nico but she ended up looking like the Cinnamon Hadley instead. In The Sandman Overture, according to J. H. Williams III, his depiction of Death is meant to resemble Siouxsie of Siouxsie and the Banshees.
John Constantine - Though not an original creation of Neil Gaiman (first created by Alan Moore), John Constantine was supposed to have resembled rock star, Sting. (roughly 1985 look.)
Desire of The Endless - Desire was, at least partly, inspired by the Duran Duran album cover Rio. The cover was painted by Patrick Nagel and designed by Malcolm Garrett. When Neil was starting out as a writer one of the first things he wrote was a book on Duran Duran.
Another inspiration for Desire came from Annie Lennox’s look for the music video “Sweet Dreams (are made of this).” Ironic considering the title.
Delirium of The Endless - Though Neil Gaiman did not meet Tori Amos until after he had created Delirium, he insists that Delirium was somehow inspired by Tori Amos.
Men of Good Fortune - The issue / Chapter of The Sandman called Men of Good Fortune is named after a song by Lou Reed. Sunday Morning - The issue / Chapter called Sunday Morning is also named after a Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) song. So that is two Hob Gadling chapters named for Lou Reed Songs. Beginning to see the Light - The Sandman: A game of You issue / chapter named Beginning to see the Light is also named for a Velvet Underground song. Dream songs - Roy Orbison’s In dreams plays in The Sandman issue Dream a little Dream of me. The issue / chapter is named after a song. And Mr. Sandman (Bring me a Dream) by the Chordettes is also in that issue. The Skye Boat song - Not actually a rock song by any interpretation of the term but I thought I’d mention it. Many of you may recognize the Skye Boat song as the “theme song to Outlander.” This song is referenced in The Sandman: A Game of You. Labyrinth - Neil Gaiman is an admitted fan of the Jim Henson film Labyrinth. A friend of mine insisted that Morpheus is “Goth Jareth” (David Bowie’s character in Labyrinth). And a Game of You has some plot similarities to Labyrinth. Labyrinth has six original songs by David Bowie.
Queen - It’s no secret that Neil Gaiman is a Queen and David Bowie fan and tends to reference both whenever possible in his writing. The Sandman Brief lives is no exception. When Delirium wanders into a night club two men are discussing the death of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, and one mentions someone making the crude joke of “Another One Bites the Dust” (a popular 1980 Queen song).
There are many more rock music references in The Sandman but these are the ones I could remember off-hand. Think how strange it would be if all of these (80s) rock elements were removed from The Sandman somehow.
And this is a more recent connection but John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and The Angry Inch) plays Hal AKA Dolly, the drag queen, in The Sandman Netflix series storyline called The Doll’s House.

Hi and welcome to my blog Jezebel's Nightmare :) I am a Goth from the UK and use this blog to post my pictures. Feel welcome to ask questions, especially about Goth subculture, as long as they are respectful and are SFW.
Somethings about me :)
Some of my favourite bands are Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees, Type O Negative, The Birthday Party and Jack Off Jill. (As well as many more!)
Feel free to recommend music!
My favourite movie is The Crow, but Donnie Darko and The Labyrinth are up there as well.
I love castles, graveyards and all that is dark and creepy too :)

any queer bars/clubs you'd recommend in edinburgh? we've not been able to find anything satisfactory unfortunately
Depends on the vibes you're after!
Specifically queer venues:
Planet: never been except after pride one time like 6 years ago, so unable to really review personally, but my pals have given me middling to low reviews of the vibes tbh. The queer rugby team often host events there though
CC Blooms: a club, usually fun tunes but can have a slightly "cishets on stags/hens" crowd occasionally. Would recommend going for their drag shows though, they're always super fun
The Street: good food good drink, also host regular drag shows and club nights and I've loved all the ones I've been to
The Regent: a regular ass pub that is just pretty much exclusively for queer people who want to do a crossword and start weird arguments about board games
Other drag shows/queer events spaces:
Kandy Store at Frankensteins: all seated but Is downstairs so ymmv access wise, usually not super busy which is a tragedy because it fucking rules. They also host a yearly competition for new and upcoming drag artists which is always so special
Queer as Punk at Wee Red Bar or Leith Depot: cool as fuck group that puts on punk gigs and drag shows and spoken word nights and short film screenings, it's never the same twice so I recommend following them on Instagram to see the specific shows they do
Leith Arches: events space that hosts a variety of shows including a regular drag king night and other clubs or performances
Dog House: very fun bar hosting drag bingo or other performances. A little out of the way for me but every time ive been it's been fun!
Paradise Palms: foremost a smashing veggie food and drink place, but also regularly has queer performance nights
I know there's also regular drag shows at Subway, Three Sisters, and Casablanca in grassmarket, but I have not personally been
Fun places that are queer friendly but not explicitly doing events or anything, or aren't bars but worth knowing:
Kafe Kweer: queer-owned cafe that hosts craft fairs and galleries and suchlike
Lighthouse Books: radical leftist bookshop and love of my life
Banshee Labyrinth: spooky pub with cinema room and weekly karaoke
Mortal Kocktail: weird little alt bar full of old arcade machines
Argonaut Books: independent bookshop and community space with book group meetings including im pretty sure a queer themed book club
There's definitely more that I've missed, the queer scene in Edinburgh is so wonderful and vibrant and there's space for everybody if you know where to look!!
