still thinking about y tu mama tambien diner scene. julio telling tenoch about how daniel got kicked out for being openly gay but hes happy now because he got away and can be himself. and you can kinda hear the hope in julios voice but tenoch just goes Thats nice and julio knows theres no hope for them. and then as if that wasnt enough they hit us with Luisas death and suddenly we remember the beginning of the movie and the little hints throughout that she knew she was gonna die. and you realise how everything was hopeless from the very beginning. but at least they had these few moments of fun and freedom and carelessness and love. i dont feel so good

You mentioned in tags for a y tu mama tambien post that you have many thoughts about Luisa and wanted someone to ask you about them so I’m asking you about them now because i’m genuinely curious!
Look she is such a tragic character from the beginning to the end and she's just!!!!!!!
Existing????!! Without any expectations for once in her really really short life???!! And it's so confusing and sad and painful to say the least.
She's literally playing a game of life or chance or whatever because for her life has ended. She never got to prioritize herself. She was taking care of someone her entire life. She was in a career She didn't like because she was the primary caregiver. She had a husband who cheated on her because he thought she'd stay the quiet lamp like woman who has no autonomy whatsoever. And then she meets these two boys. And they spill over all of their desires to her.
Does she even know that ultimately they only want each other???! Turns out she doesn't care anymore. She does not give an iota of a fuck anymore because she's not there anymore!!! She has ceased to exist. She literally among the 3 of them the only person who CAN take any decision at all with full freedom and autonomy because she's dead! Death has freed her more than life ever did for her and it's so painful to watch. She sees these two men all around and still stuck in that loop of societal expectations and masculinity and BS internalized homophobia and all of it and she's FUCKING pissed off at all of it.
I think the cancer freed her and it hurts her to know that only death could free her. And she sees these two men and realizes that that's rhe same thing with them too. She has opinions and she doesn't share them. She has the truth locked up in her chest and it's eating away at her and she just has so much desire and pain and it's just brutal and she didn't tell anyone because she wanted it to free her - she didn't want her death to govern it all, she wanted it to end her swiftly and quietly and she got what she wanted - the only person between the three to get that.
She got her happy ending because she had decided that her life had already ended. She just wanted the surf to take her to Sea.
