Fin Fin on QEMU (Current Version - v2.2)
Tumblr media
Fin Fin on QEMU is a project designed to create an easy to use way for anyone to play Fin Fin without the need for any complicated setup on modern operating systems. It is fully compatible with Windows 10 and 11, but will also work on any version after XP.
The version of the game used is a custom made translation that includes all 6 worlds in English. It has working microphone input, sound recording, and all associated features such as screenshots and the encyclopedia work as well.
Rather than using virtualization, this works through emulating an entire Windows 98 machine. To play it there's no need to install any hypervisors or set up a virtual machine, as everything is already set up, and ready to go.
The download link can be found here! (Hosted on MEGA)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Installation
The whole thing is portable, meaning nothing is actually "installed" and all the data is wherever you place the folder. This also means that if moved to another PC, all user data will still be present.
To run, all you need to do is extract the folder in the .zip to a location of your choosing, and then run one of the launchers.
Tumblr media
Included are two launcher versions for the different QEMU display options, one that uses GTK and one that uses SDL. The only difference between the .bat script and the .exe versions is that a command window will be shown when using the .bat script.
Both have pros and cons, so I've included both to let the user decide which one they want to use.
SDL has broken window scaling and no mouse integration, but has a correctly stretched fullscreen. GTK has a stretched fullscreen mode, but has working mouse integration and window scaling. Basically if you want the game in fullscreen use SDL, otherwise use GTK. For a bit more info about these, checkout the 'Files' section under the 'Keep Reading'
Tumblr media
Important Info
Before launching the main game, be sure to create a profile using 'New Contact', as the game will not run until doing so. When exiting the game use the shutdown option in Windows 98. Exiting through closing the window forcefully can possibly cause data loss/corruption. When using SDL, mouse and keyboard input will be captured. To release this, press 'Ctrl + Alt + G'. When using GTK, the menubar can be hidden or shown by pressing 'Ctrl + Alt + M'. To make the window fullscreen, press 'Ctrl + Alt + F'.
Tumblr media
Sounds
Tumblr media
Included are two "sound effect packs" for the in game sounds that play based on the number keys from 1-5.
By default, the game will use the sound effects from the 5 Worlds version, but you can swap out to the 6 worlds one by renaming the "sound (alternate)" folder in the D: drive to just "sound", and renaming the original sound folder to something else.
Tumblr media
I hope you all have fun with your new best friend Fin Fin!
Tumblr media
Fin Fin is a wonderful little enigma from the past, and my attempt to make it easily accessible even in the present is something I hope you will all enjoy.
If you encounter any issues in Fin Fin on QEMU, please contact me about it.
To view the changelog, credits, and some more info about this project check below the 'Keep reading'.

Updating Versions
Included is a guided updater that will help you transfer your save, screenshots, and sound recordings to the latest version.
Place the new version in a temporary location without replacing the original. Then, just run "Updater.bat" and follow the instructions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
System Time
Time in the emulated machine is synced to the host PC.
If you would like to time travel in Fin Fin, you can change the time in the emulated PC but it will go back to normal after a restart. Note that if you do this you will not be able to go back to the original time, you can only go forwards using this method If you would like to permanently change the time, you can use the built in date-changer present in the 'New Contact' program, but this will cause the loss of the current profile.
Tumblr media
QEMU
Though it should be quite obvious by now, this project works through the use of QEMU, an open source emulator. Specifically, its emulating a full Windows 98 SE machine, and then the game is run on that.
The emulated machine has 128mb of RAM, an AC97 Soundcard, and a Pentium CPU.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Files
The only files this project really has aside from QEMU are FinFin GTK.bat/.exe and FinFin SDL.bat/.exe
The reason I list the .exe and .bat files together is that they do exactly the same thing. The executables aren't really 'true executables', but are instead just batch scripts that have been converted into .exe files. When they run, they essentially create a temporary batch script that deletes itself. The only real benefit of this is that its a bit more straightforward for launching and creating shortcuts, and that there is no distracting command window while playing.
Within the 'Data' folder is where the bulk of the project is. Inside are two virtual hard drives, w98.qcw being the main Windows 98 drive, and finfin.qcw being where all the Fin Fin game data is.

HELLO soo I was inspired by the most recent secret life episode to write some tcd angst set in secret life <33 Enjoy :D
Link to Ao3 if you prefer to read there
———----
Scar, despite all odds against him, does hold his own for a little while. Gem is after him, bloodthirsty and intent, for reasons that Scar doesn’t know. She traps his base, she shoots at him, stabs at him — and he survives it all, up until he doesn’t. There are four of them by then, and they hunt him down and pick him off. And he dies.
These games are fun, is the thing. They get together and they make silly little groups with playful rivalry’s and eventually someone wins. It’s fun. Scar has fun, usually.
None of them know about the world he came from. That lonely, ravaged, barren world. The zombies had been everywhere, fast and stubborn. Scar had been young and hurt and alone, and had learned to run on broken legs before he learned how to read.
It’s been a long time ago, now. The memories sneak up on him far less often than they used to, and he’s better. This though, this thing with Gem and the others, it’s hitting him in places that still hurt; places that will always hurt.
Scar is fresh off his first death, still reeling from being hunted down, and Cleo and Grian are telling him he can’t stay.
“You’re not one of us,” Grian says, and they’re just playing a game, but Scar is confused. He’d been invited, hadn’t he? But then Cleo had taken it back.
“Scar!” Bdubs is a distance behind him, sitting atop a horse and calling his name urgently. “Scar, we need to talk to you.”
Scar goes, and hears whispering behind him, something about zombies and spreading. It makes a bit of nerves flare up in his stomach, but he ignores them. He is far enough removed from the past that hearing the word won’t send him into hysterics. He’s even recovered enough that he can handle the sight of a few zombies, even if his heart rate elevates until they’re gone. He’s better, he is.
Bdubs takes him back to the others, and they explain to him what’s been going on. It’s Gem’s task to spread the Boogeyman curse, one by one, to everyone. He suddenly feels a little bad for trying to burn the book earlier, because this sounds like a good time. Causing some chaos, killing some people, making each other laugh — it's what they’re all here for. It’s why they play the game.
(There’s a small but persistent inkling of unease living behind his rib cage at the fact that they’re comparing themselves to zombies, to an apocalypse, but he ignores it. It’s not important enough to mention it, and he doesn’t want to ruin everyone’s fun.)
They get Etho, and Gem praises him for it, and Scar tries not to compare the fortress the others are defending to the bunkers he used to raid. His brain still makes the connection, as much as he wishes it didn’t. The memories trickle in slowly, making him more and more on edge as the day goes on. It will be over soon, Scar tells himself. Then he can rest, and go back to being better.
Joel has a zombie spawner to farm XP. Scar has used it, has been inside it. He’d been expecting zombies, then. He doesn’t expect it when Joel throws down sixty-four zombie eggs in a row.
The thin and fraying thread tying him together snaps.
Everyone is screaming and yelling, running, chasing after Joel. There are zombies as far as he can see, in groups and alone, groaning and gurgling into the night. It fills his ears, wraps itself around his mind like a vice, catapults him back to when he was just a kid, fighting the world with his teeth bared and no one at his back.
Everything goes fuzzy and distant, the noises muffled beneath his heartbeat and heaving breaths echoing endlessly in his ears. He slows to a stop, chest heaving and eyes wide, skin going cold and numb with terror. Nothing makes sense. Everything is wrong.
There’s something in his hand, and he looks at it, panicked tears prickling at his eyes. He’s holding a sword, and an anguished, confused noise rips itself from his throat. Where’s his gun? Guns are better, guns are safer; guns mean he doesn’t have to get close.
The moaning of the undead is growing louder, they’re coming for him, and he stumbles forward with gasping breaths, eyes flitting around wildly as he searches for a place to hide. The ground is filled with craters, zombies in every direction, and he blinks desperately to clear his blurry vision, pushing forward with all the desperate agony of a man living on borrowed time.
He thinks he hears someone call his name, but it can’t be real, it’s just a memory, it’s just his stupid, persistent hope manifesting itself at the worst possible time. He has to get back to his base, his bunker, but nothing looks familiar, no direction looks like the correct way to go—
He runs anyway, passing by a giant stone statue and weaving around holes in the ground and slashing blindly at anything that looks like it’s moving. He spots a tower in the distance, oddly shaped and oddly colored, but a structure nonetheless, and he runs for it. The zombies are here and they never left and he never left and he runs.
He only makes it halfway.
There’s a zombie in one of the craters, and Scar doesn’t see it, is too wrapped up in his tunnel vision, and it grabs at his ankle as he walks by. He hits the ground, hard, his knee hitting first before everything else. He hears a sharp crack, and knows it’s broken.
He twists his head around wildly, tearing his leg out of the zombies cold grip with a yell of pain, dragging himself out of reach just in time for others to bear down on him. His vision becomes a swirling kaleidoscope of hands and teeth, of skin and claws, and he opens his mouth and screams.
(He won’t know until later, but everyone near spawn hears it. Everyone hears it, and freezes, and turns to look. It sounds like pure terror, like the final cry of a dying man. None of them will ever forget it.)
He swings his sword wildly, slashing and scrambling to get away, but his knee hurts and they’re pushing him down, he can’t get up—
He hears yelling, distantly, but that still can’t be right, no one else is here, no one else can save him—
Scar rolls to the side, and falls into one of the craters, dirt and pebbles sprinkling down on top of him when he hits the ground with a dull thud. He shouts through clenched teeth as the landing jostles his leg, but still pushes himself up and back until his back hits the solid side of the hole. Grass and dirt is still clinging above him, forming somewhat of an overhang. They can’t attack from directly above. Scar grips his sword in violently shaking hands and waits for the hoards to find him.
He still hears the voices, but he shouldn’t be hearing voices, he’s alone here, he hasn’t heard a human voice not his own since he was six, and he closes his eyes tightly for a few seconds, willing himself back to reality. Something drops to the ground in front of him, and Scars eyes wrench themselves back open, landing on the shadowed figure of a person coming his way. He has both hands on his sword, and he points it at the approaching zombie.
It speaks. It says his name.
“Scar,” the figure says, a deep, frantic concern in their voice. “Are you— What happened? Are you okay?”
The cloud that had been blocking the moon slowly drifts away, and Scar gets a good look at the figure — the person — in front of him. He’s human, he’s alive, and Scar knows him, he knows who it is, but he can’t be here, he’s not supposed to be here. This is the world where Scar is young and alone. No one else belongs here.
The past and the present collide angrily in his head; he doesn’t know what’s real. He doesn’t even know this person's name. The person is crouching a few feet away, empty hands extended imploringly, worry plain in his eyes. Scar’s eyes catch on his shirt, black with gold accents, and can’t help but think that something’s missing. A letter, he thinks, but can’t quite remember which one.
It doesn’t matter. He’s not really here.
He must’ve said some of that out loud, because the man’s face drops, something heartbroken pinching at his eyes. Scar feels bad, and doesn’t know why.
“I’m here, Scar,” says the man, voice trembling. “I’m real. You’re okay.”
The man is a liar. Scar shakes his head, a trembling exhale shaking his tense frame. The sword remains steady.
“No,” Scar says, voice strained and breaking. “No, you— you can’t be. Not here.”
“Scar—“
“Stop saying my name,” Scar begs. “I don’t know— I don’t know who you are.”
It’s only half true. He recognizes him, knows he’s a friend, but his brain is rebelling against the very thought that he could exist in a place like this. In the place Scar grew up. No. Everyone was either dead or undead, here. Everyone but Scar. This person with sad eyes and gentle hands does not belong.
“Impulse!” Another voice is calling down at them, and Scar looks up, catching a glimpse of bright orange curls and mismatched eyes. Nothing makes sense. “Is he okay?”
The man — Impulse — looks at him, and then looks up. He can still hear the zombies, everywhere and far too many.
“Get Grian,” Impulse says, and the person above them freezes for just a moment, and then disappears.
Grian, Scar thinks. Another name he knows. Another name that doesn’t make sense to be hearing in a world like this. His mind scrambles, his eyes sting, the zombies groan and shriek above him. Nothing makes sense.
Grian will, some distant and muted part of him says.
Grian will.
—————————
Grian is on top of their cobblestone tower — laughing at the sheer amount of zombies and chaos in the distance — when Gem comes tearing up the slope at high speeds, something frantic and determined in her eyes.
“No zombies allowed!” Grian calls down, grinning, though it dims when she looks up at him. There is something serious and desperate about her gaze.
“Grian!” She slides to a stop at the base of their castle, face dotted with sweat and panic. “You need to come with me, something—“
“You’re just going to kill me,” Grian says, confused and faltering. “Why would I—“
“It’s Scar,” Gem interrupts, a harsh concern clipping her words. “He’s— Something’s wrong with him, a zombie got him and he screamed.”
Grian tilts his head. “Scar screams all the time.”
“Not like this,” Gem says, sounding genuinely shaken. “Not like this, Grian, please.”
She doesn’t even have her sword out, standing at the base of their fortress with wild eyes and a desperate plea. Something’s wrong with Scar. Something bad enough that everything else has gone out the window. Gem’s not here asking him to play the game. She’s here begging him to pause it.
“Okay,” Grian says, a new bubble of panic growing in his chest. “I’m coming, let’s go.”
Gem nods at him when he emerges from the tower, and then she takes off running, leaving Grian with nothing to do but follow. It seems to take forever to get there, weaving around hoards of zombies and craters left over from the wither attack. The other server members are mowing through the hoards with swords and axes, and what seems to be extreme prejudice. They all look a bit shaken. The coil of nervous worry in Grian’s rib cage grows.
Gem stops them at a random crater, and nods. “Down there,” she says, and then throws herself back into the fray, cutting through any undead limbs that reach for her. The surface is a battlefield.
Grian drops down, and Impulse turns to look at him, grim concern pressing his lips thin. He looks relieved when he sees him, and Grian looks behind him and realizes why.
Scar is there, hunched against the wall and shaking like a leaf, sword held in trembling hands and fearful eyes flickering between them. Grian’s stomach drops, and he inhales shakily. Scar looks lost, and so very, very afraid. He’s never seen him like this.
“It’s the zombies,” Impulse says, quietly. “They set him off somehow, I— He barely recognizes me.”
Grian remembers, distantly, Double Life. Scar had fallen into a pit of zombies, and they had both died that day. He hadn’t quite understood why their shared heart had been beating so fast for so long after; he never knew the reason for Scar’s shell-shocked eyes above his trembling smile when they met back up. He still doesn’t know why, but now he knows for sure. Scar is afraid of zombies.
“Get rid of them,” Grian says, equally hushed, even though everyone has already started. Impulse just nods, one hand on his sword, and climbs out of the crater. Grian turns to Scar.
“Scar,” Grian starts, voice carefully relaxed. “You’re safe, okay? We’re getting rid of them.”
Scar shakes his head, moonlight catching on the tear tracks on his face, and Grian aches.
“You can’t be here,” Scar says, turning pleading eyes towards him. “You— You can’t be here.”
Grian gets a little closer, and crouches down, doing his best to appear non-threatening. “Why not, Scar?”
“It’s wrong,” Scar says, sounding all of ten years old, terrified and unsteady. “I’m supposed to be alone, you can’t be here.”
“Why are you supposed to be alone?”
“It’s just me, it’s always just me,” Scar insists, and then he inclines his head upwards, to where the zombies are still groaning. “Me and them.”
Grian swallows, feeling out of his depth and worried. The only reason Scar would have a reaction like this is if it had once been true. Once upon a time, it really had just been Scar and hoards of zombies. And in Scar’s mind, that’s where he was. He’d never left. Grian’s stomach rolled.
“We’re not there,” Grian says, still unsure where there was. “We’re in Secret Life, Scar. We’re playing a game.”
Scar shakes his head again, violently, and starts trying to stand up. A muffled whine escapes his throat when he puts weight on his knee, but still he stands. Grian wants to grab him and shake him and then wrap him up in several blankets.
“You’re hurt,” Grian says, a note of pleading in his voice, hands hovering, wanting to reach out. “You shouldn’t be walking, Scar.”
“I’ve walked on worse,” Scar says vacantly, and twists around to look behind him, making a noise of frustration. “My backpack, where’s my— I need—“
“Backpack?” Grian repeats.
“I need morphine,” Scar says, voice tight with pain and panic. “I need to get out of here. You need to get out of here. You can’t be here.”
Morphine. Scar’s plan is to numb the agony of a broken knee and run on it anyway. Scar says it like it’s normal, like there’s no other choice, like this is the only way. Maybe it was, once. Grian wants to scream and cry and pull the universe apart with his hands. Instead, he grabs Scar’s wrist in a gentle hold.
“I am here,” Grian says, soft but firmly still, and Scar freezes. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Grian tugs at his wrist making Scar meet his eyes, trying to ground him. Scar blinks at him, hazy and distant, chest heaving. Grian reaches out slowly, and takes the sword from Scar’s hand.
“Do you remember,” Grian begins, “asking me to be your friend?”
Grian remembers. Scar, with grey skin and crimson eyes, hiding a sheepish grin behind a bouquet of poppies and lilacs. Something like recognition flickers across Scar’s face, and Grian keeps going.
“We had a llama called Pizza.”
“I blew you up on accident.”
“The moon was falling and you built a rocket upside down.”
“You were my soulmate, of course it was you—“
“You made fun of our bread bridge.”
“You were actually a pretty good mayor, you know.”
Grian lays their memories out between them, holding Scar’s wrist gently in his hands, and doesn’t stop until Scar looks at him and finally seems to see him. His face crumples, awareness flooding his expression, and Grian lowers them both to the ground when Scar’s knees give out.
“I’m sorry,” Scar says, voice cracking, and he gives an awkward little laugh that makes Grian’s heart twist sharply. “That doesn’t— That hasn’t happened in a while.”
“It’s okay, Scar, don’t apologize,” Grian says, adjusting his grip to hold Scar’s hand loosely. “Do you feel better?”
“I feel like I ran a marathon,” Scar answers, exhaustion in his tone. “I don’t— Thank you. For bringing me back.”
“Of course.” Grian hesitates. “…Where did you go?”
Scar takes a shaky breath, eyes going tired and sad. Grian’s eyes catch on a scar peeking out beneath his collar.
“I was stuck in a hardcore world when I was a kid,” Scaf says eventually, resigned. “I was the only player in a zombie apocalypse. I had to… let myself die, to get out. But I spent years there.”
Grian stares, quietly horrified. He imagines Scar, so very young and so very alone, running on broken limbs and killing things that once were people every day, and still finding the willpower to survive for years and years. That Scar had grown up in a world without light and still come out of it with a personality bright enough to blind them all — it was nothing short of miraculous. Brilliant, mischievous, stubborn Scar, with enough skeletons in his closet for all of them and the uncanny ability to make them laugh until they were out of breath.
“You never said anything,” Grian says, careful to keep any accusation out of his voice. He understands. He still wishes he had known, somehow.
“It’s not fun to hear about,” Scar says, and stares at his broken knee. “And it’s…not easy to talk about, either.”
“I know,” Grian says, squeezing his hand. “But if you ever want to, I’m here. I don’t want— I don’t want this to happen again.”
The zombie sounds have died down, the others having done their damn best to kill them quickly. It’s quiet but for their breathing, slowly slowing down.
“I’m a lot better,” Scar says, brow furrowed. “That was just, a lot more than I was expecting.”
“It’s okay,” Grian says. “It’s… You don’t have to be better all the time.”
Scar glances at him, his mouth lifting just a bit, looking a little lighter. “Thanks.”
“And you can talk to us.” Grian smiles back. “We can help you when it’s hard.”
Scar lets out a long, slow breath, the shake in his hands finally down to something manageable. Grian is relieved for all of two seconds, and then something mischievous flickers in Scar’s eyes. Grian sighs, because he knows what’s coming—
“That’s what she said,” Scar says, quick and unapologetic, and Grian smacks his shoulder with his free hand. Scar laughs, and Grian just rolls his eyes and grins.
Yeah. He’ll be fine.

Some early game Baldur’s Gate 3 tips
- Once you’ve rescued Shadowheart from her pod on the Nautiloid, you can press K on pc (idk about controller) to see her spell list and change her prepared spells. Swap out one of her spells for Command. Now you can use command to make the devil drop his sword and easily go and pick it up. Even if you can’t use it, this is a very strong early game sword even for your party members and there’s no reason not to do this. Once he’s dropped his weapon it’s easier to kill him, but still very tough. He gives a lot of xp though, so it’s your choice. (Thanks to my gf for this she’s a genius)
- Long rest as often as possible. Especially if you care about your companions personal stories and your relationships with them. As you progress the story and recruit your party members, camp events get added to a queue with different urgency attached to them. If you don’t long rest enough, you will miss a lot of these. Some of them are important for quests, some are just for learning more about your companions, but you can get a lot of approval if you do them, if that’s something you care about. The majority of the time there is no downside to long resting frequently, with camp supplies being very easy to come by. There are a small number of quests that will change after you long rest, but by far fewer than I thought there would be. If you’re worried, you can f5 to quick save before long rest. On my earlier saves, I used long rest very sparingly and missed a lot of events I would’ve liked to have seen. (Also obviously restoring spell slots and hp and stuff)
- If you are not playing a cleric or a druid, and don’t feel like constantly having Shadowheart in your party, you can go here to loot a necklace with Guidance on it. Guidance is extremely good for dice rolls and I absolutely recommend picking this up.
Tumblr media
- This last ones mostly just for fun, once you reach the Emerald Grove, head up the path to the east from the entrance and you can meet Alfira the tiefling bard. Talk to her and offer to play with her, pass all the difficulty checks and you’ll learn to play musical instruments. There’s also a chest here with an item for bards inside. Head north east from her to fight some harpies and rescue a tiefling boy, who will give you access to the kids hideout. Again these aren’t super important, just helpful, and the instrument proficiency is fun. These will NOT be available after you complete the main quest for the zone. (Image is from google, dont know what the other markers are)
Tumblr media
- Oh also, these are pretty well known but just in case. As I said, F5 to quicksave, F8 to quickload. Hold ALT to see almost all lootable objects. Hold SHIFT to see enemy’s cones of vision.
These are just a few tips that would have helped me out had I known them sooner, that I’ve hardly seen mentioned anywhere else. There’s more obvious ones, like making sure you recruit Wyll and Karlach before moving on to act 2, as they’re easily missable, and fully exploring the crash site to find all the available companions. Feel free to let me know if there’s any more I should add or reblog with your own!

Oh shoot I almost forgot
Stupid Chalice of the Gods predictions before the book comes out and ruins my fun:
1. There will be a lecture about how important college is probably from Chiron
2. Student loan joke ftw
3. Maybe a clever jab at how Percy feels like he’s been 17 forever and can’t wait to be an adult
4. Ganymede is Zues’s intern or something like that
5. The fact that Ganymede is god of homosexuality will either be glossed over or will be his entire personality.
6. Alabaster is also looking for chalice and he is a main factor in making it difficult for the og3 to find it.
7. Because of this Hecate promises Percy his second letter of rec if he keeps Al from getting the Chalice but also makes sure Al doesn’t get killed.
8. Alabaster will make a quip about Percy being a literal dog to the gods with how he’s playing fetch for them
9. “Heroes never die, Jackson, fortunately you’re no hero~”
10. Alabaster as main villain
11. Alabaster as anti-hero
12. Alabaster as villain turned protagonist
13. Alabaster encouraging Grover to take up eco-terrorism to help along his duty as Pan’s replacement.
14. Alabaster with an anti-trio (I dunno who the other two would be maybe new original characters or maybe Ethan and some very minor god)
15. Percabeth Will unnecessarily fight to cause drama. XP
16. A comment about how they can’t use their godly parents for the letters because this is a fantasy world where nepotism doesn’t help you get into university.
17. A running joke on “what Percy Will major in” for example: Percy does solves a problem with pure luck and someone says “maybe you should major in being in the right place at the right time”
18. Letter of Rec from Akhlys? More likely then you think.
19. Jason Cameo??
20. “Al: you’re getting this potentially universe changing, power subverting magical object for the most powerful beings in the world and for what? A letter of Rec to get into a demigod college? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of…why don’t you just go into trade school or something? I’m sure you’d make a good plumber
Percy: haha 😑because water powers ;:/?
Alabaster: no because you’re full of-
Annabeth: shhh! Do you guys…hear that?”
21. Al makes a quip about how Hecate kids are smart too. “Like Athena kids, but useful” then Annabeth decks him.
22. Percy and Annabeth Save Al’s life and he has to help them because he absolutely does not want to OWE them anything.
23. Percy in his head compares Alabaster (with his dramatic entrances, ability to help them and ability to mist travel) to Nico.
24. Grover as stand in for Pan actually qualifies as a god and gives him his last letter. Loophole!
I think I had more but I can’t remember them anymore. Oh well.

Yo I tried to see if I could find it anywhere, but do you have like a timeline of events for your awesome unicorn guy/rabbit bastard story? I'm so invested but going into the archives is rough since so many comics jump around chronologically, I can't even find out how the rabbit guy survived into the future :(
Unfortunately we don't - Amaranthine is very much a work-in-progress illustrated in fits and spurts and we also never expected it to garner the attention it has.
But! @chocodile made a gorgeous webpage that summarizes major story beats and goes over the important characters, locations and magic fantasy vocab terms.
I hope it's helpful! We plan on continuing to refine the information here, including adding things like a timeline, something that sorts the comics we've posted into chronological order, and a system to find information we've posted more easily. That's something that will take a while, but will hopefully make this all easier to understand once we're done.
Also... we just haven't posted some character beats yet, hence why some information might be missing - like how exactly Hyden survived as a wizard popsicle for 300 years. Everything is still very much a WIP and there are holes and gaps because it was never meant to be a complete narrative, just a for-fun side project while we work on our game Wishbone.
Perhaps one day it will exist in a more complete state, but for now we're still making things up as we go and illustrating scenes whenever the urge strikes! Thank you for being interested in this patchwork puzzle regardless. xP

New QSMP rules and why they needed to exist
1. The areas protected by the Administration/Federation cannot be broken, do not take advantage of bugs.
Or the admins "very bad, not good event". For people who weren't there, there was an event on Thursday for the liberation of Cellbit and Felps from the federation. The players tried to break in and discovered that you can destroy protected blocks with the symmetry wand. They spent hours doing it, only for the admins to erase the structure from the map so they would stop. On top of that, fit managed to find a way to vandalize the protected church using a watermelon gun yesterday.
This rule is obviously for story purpose. You can't really hide any structure in minecraft, so they don't have any other choice than putting the building in plain sight. If the players keep breaking the protected blocks, it can affect the story by revealing things that are only supposed to come up later. I can imagine the admins weren't happy to see all their hard work destroy by something they didn't know was possible, hence the ban.
2. XP farms are allowed as long as the spawner was generated naturally.
I don't know anything about XP farm in minecraft, but it's nice that they clarify this. There was always a doubt on the server about XP farms, which one was legal and which one was not. At least now, players know.
3. The video options are allowed as long as the range isn't excessively big.
Fun fact, yesterday I had a thought about how long before the video/audio became illegal due to things getting out of hands. So many things happen to justify this rule: Forever putting way too many blocks in Cellbit castle, The very loud Pac e Mike song, the bird block that cover the whole main area.
It's only a question of time before things get dirty with these. It can be very inconvenient for players (and viewers) that have sensitivity issues. Or really annoying at least. By restricting it, you ensure that players don't interfere in the enjoyment of others. (I'm pretty sure there were complaints about the bird noises. It was pretty harmless, but imagine if Forever had put something worse, like a loud music. It would have made La France, Favela and Phil's house unplayable areas.)
4. Do not modify too much the spawn area.
No ideas why this rules had been added now specifically. My only guess is that there is a significant amount of players going there now because of the Sharestone. But yes, it's a logical rule to ensure the spawn isn't the target of a Prank. If any of you know if something happen at spawn, I will edit this section.
5. It is prohibited to import or move structures with the Create mod or any other type of mechanisms.
Ah, This was quick. Yesterday, Bad and Dapper move a big tower on top of foolish dragon using the create mod for a prank. The problem was, the tower gives mining fatigue, making it almost indestructible. This discovery basically allows players to move anything, even constructions that are not their own.
You can imagine why this one exist. I was on Foolish stream yesterday, and he genuinely looked distraught at the alteration of is structure. Allowing players to move buildings at will? Terrible ideas. Not only could they do that to prank each other, but also they could break up lore building. Also, yesterday show that it's not that simple. Dapper destroyed part of the tower by moving it. The superglue is destruction and drama waiting to happen.
6.The deadline to complete the missions are 12am PST, after that, the missions will reset.
Not the twitter admins won't have to wait for BadBoyHalo to go to sleep so they could post the egg statistic update lol.
7. The eggs cannot have more than 2 immortality totems
This one is probably the most controversial, but logical for me. To paraphrase what Étoiles told Pomme yesterday: "with everything you have, it's impossible for you to dies. At least if the code isn't cheating". And I believe he is right. With the stasis chamber, the gears and the totem, it's almost impossible to kill an egg if the players are being careful. And we know they are trying really hard to take Pomme last life so the story could progress. The attack will not be like the last one, it will not be as unforgiving. So, with Bad doing totem traffic on the server, they needed a way to give a chance to the code and restricted them. If not, all eggs would have 30 totems by next week. X)
I really hope it increases the chances to have epic battle for the eggs while not dooming them.

These are the original thoughts and rough concept that eventually became my Entrepreneurshipping fic. This isn't exactly how things ended up, but thought I would share them for the fun of it.
Siegfried and Leon are staying with the Kaibas while Seto is trying to work out the terms for buying SchroederCorp. They finally reach the point where everything is perfect except that Zieg wants Seto to sleep with him before he’ll sign the contract. That afternoon, they send the kids off to KaibaLand with Roland and the staff are all sent away. The boys get wine-drunk while “getting to know each other” and talking about Duel Monsters, and for a little bit, it almost feels like they’re just being friends. Then Seto tries to get Zieg to sign the contract again, and Zieg is like, “Look, I know your reputation. You’ve been making some pretty one-sided deals, and I’m not signing anything until I get what I want.” So they negotiate a little more, and then Seto sucks his dick with the agreement that they’ll fuck that night. They clean up and have a meeting with the attorneys to sign the contracts with proper witnesses and everything. Then that night they celebrate with a lot more wine in Zieg’s room, and Seto is an absolute DOM because he knows, from his own intuitions, Zieg’s confessions, and [redacted], that that’s absolutely what Zieg wants. They’re up fucking at least half the night, and by the end of it, Zieg is in love despite Seto telling him that this is purely business.
The next morning, Duke is hanging out with Seto’s assistant outside the KC building waiting for him to arrive. (He's running uncharacteristically late.) When he does finally show up with Zieg in his limo, Seto’s wearing dark sunglasses and doesn’t take them off when he goes inside. Those two are arguing in German, and Zieg gets a little touchy, so Duke is immediately like, “Why he touchin’ my man?” and goes up to him like, “Yeah, hi there, I have an important secret update on our project and we have to talk alone” and Seto tells his assistant to get Zieg set up in one of the smaller conference rooms and arrange a press conference for 3pm. Duke asks him if he’s hungover, and Kaiba’s like, “No, I’m not, shut up,” and Duke is all, “You made the mistake of drinking with a German. It’s not as bad as drinking with a Russian, but damn boy, I don’t think you know how to hold your liquor. You need more XP before you’re ready to go drinking against a German again.” And Seto’s all, “As fascinating as your knowledge of international stereotypes is, I thought you said you had something important to tell me, and that really doesn’t count.” By this point, they’ve made it to Seto’s office, and once inside he closes the door and starts closing the blinds. Duke’s all, “Oh yeah, the parts we needed for the next step have been delayed. It’ll be another two days before we can keep going.” Seto is annoyed and frustrated and sits down at his desk and puts his head in his hands. He’s still wearing the sunglasses. Duke asks about Zieg getting so handsy that morning, and what were they arguing about anyways, and Seto says that he needs Duke’s advice on how to get someone UNinterested in him. And Duke is like, “Oh, dude, no problem. But did you do anything that might have encouraged his affections? Cause I need to know that before I can say a word to him.” And Seto is like, “Well… you don’t need to know, actually.”
(following dialogue is the gist of what’s being said)
Duke: “You kissed him when you were drunk, didn’t you? I get it, he’s real pretty, but next time you get drunk, you should definitely invite me. I'm even prettier when you're drunk.”
Kaiba: “That’s not, ugh, you’re still flirting with me? Whatever, you’re hopeless. Is it really necessary for you to know what happened between us?”
Duke: “Yes, absolutely necessary.”
Kaiba gives him a thoughtful look and then Duke realizes.
“You slept with him while you were drunk, didn’t you? Now he thinks it means something?”
“That’s not… quite it either.”
“Okay dude, spill. You want help, and I can only do that if I have all the details.”
“I slept with him to close the deal.”
“Excuse me, you what?”
“He refused to sign the papers unless I slept with him, so” *casual shrug* “It was purely transactional sex, and he knew that, but by the end of it, he said he was falling for me, and I need him to get over himself.”
Duke is pretty shocked for a moment, and all he can manage is a quip. “I thought you didn’t date. But you’re good enough in bed that he fell in love with you after one night?”
“Shut the fuck up. I told you what happened. Are you going to help me or not?”
“Okay, okay, I’ll talk to him after the press conference and tell him you’re my boyfriend and that last night was strictly business, but he needs to back off now. Then you’re going to come home with me to make a point to him. Deal?”
“Fine, deal, whatever, just turn the light off when you leave”

what do you think of a campaign in the style of games like Left 4 Dead and Vermintide(fighting through hordes of enemies while completing a series of objectives)?
Tumblr media
DM Tip: Against the Horde
Friend, let me tell you the tale of the time I was playing in a game where the DM decided it would be a great idea for us to fight 200 zombies. This wasn't because we were the appropriate level, that many zombies amounted to a challenging encounter for a party twice our strength, 200 just felt like a nice round number that would appropriately communicate the idea of a horde.
That fight (and the five hours it took) was one of the most valuable lessons in dungeonmastering I ever received, because it showed me nearly every problem that emerges from d&d's combat system when you put it under stress.
To set up the stakes, it saddens me to say that there were none: the zombies emerged in a village we had never heard of and would never go to again for no reason what so ever. This was in no way part of or relevant to any plots, before or after. It was purely an excuse for the dm to have us fight 200 zombies and that fight had no bearing on anything. We didn't even get XP for it.
Now let me share what I've learned:
Like all of its other systems, D&D combat is not fundamentally fun or meaningful, it becomes fun and meaningful when the combat is used to tell stories the party already has stakes in. Sure, it's enjoyable to throw some dice around and roll big numbers but if you're going to do that without a story attached you might as well be playing a boardgame with more refined mechanics like Heroquest or Gloomhaven
The base combat system of d&d is fundamentally clumsy, which makes sense given that it's a bastardization of wargame rules from before they invented fun. "roll to hit vs ac, roll damage vs hp" might've been snappy back when creatures and characters tracked hp and damage in 1s and 2s, but as the numbers bloated combat slowed to a crawl. Not only does a player now need to wait 10-40 minutes between their chances to do anything, that chance can be entirely wasted by a bad to-hit or damage roll, especially when you don’t have an ability to buff your damage.   Because d&d operates on the concept of attrition and we were forced to fight so many zombies, our entire party was down to making basic attacks after the first few rounds. Our turns became almost meaningless by the end: whether or not we hit, it generally took 2-4 swings to down a single zombie, and then another shambling corpse would take its place. This is to say nothing of the damage they were doing on us, or the healers desperately trying to keep everyone up when it became inevitable that they’d be downed again before their turn came around.
People who complain about players steamrolling encounters or that modern classes feel like “superheroes” have failed to recognize that cool and borderline overpowered abilities are what save the game from being a slog. Combat lasts about three rounds because that’s about how long it takes for the players to burn through their reserves of cool shit and start having to throw rocks at their opponents. Fighting on an empty tank can be poignant once or twice a campaign, but if it happens every time you roll initiative people are going to start tuning out. This is why the professional games have big fights sparingly and generally reserve entire episodes for them.
It is likewise the DM’s job to set up cool and borderline overpowered opportunities within the combat space to supplement the party’s own, just like it’s their job to come up with interesting challenges for the party to overcome. That’s just a standard of good combat design, and while smaller fights can be simpler, it should be equally mandatory for big fights to have just as much thought put into the party’s options as the enemy team’s composition.
My most important lesson that campaign taught me is this: No d&d is better than bad d&d. I could have skipped that session and spent five hours doing anything else and i’d have been better off... I likewise could have skipped that campaign and have been spared the grand finale where the DM pulled that sort of shit again, running an “epic” multi-unit fantasy LOTR style battle where we got to watch as they spent 95% of the time smashing different armies together like single player warhammer.
I want to say sorry to the Asker for stumbling into one of my old war stories. Figured it’d be a good baseline to have while I circle back to the more specific advice: It’s fine to have a setting where enemies are everywhere, but prolonged combat vs overwhelming numbers of foes simply breaks the game. L4D and Vermintide are game systems that are mechanically built to feel good engaging with that many foes (and have the benefit of computer processing powers) where as D&D works best on small scale skirmishes.

2100 total post! it's funny because I was looking back at my 2k total post so i would grab only notable NEW items and not stuff i had then, and i was like "damn, not too many significant items since then, huh." but the butt-ugly, universally-applicable ranged set is probably a bigger upgrade than anything i had back then! the zenytes are pretty big too, never having to go back to demonics? amazing. i got fairly lucky on both of those grinds and i thank guthix for that.
pictured next to my occult altar because that is maybe my other most beloved upgrade, and i went fairly dry on my 2nd pharaohs sceptre to make the altar, so, yknow, everything evens out. also went dry on the enhanced teleport crystal, and the tome of water was a nice get i suppose but mainly it reminds me that i am STILL dry for tackle box, what i actually wanted from tempoross... (got pissed and quit at 3x dry, but i guess I'll go back for it one day). can't complain though, since (so far) the places I go dry are pretty non-painful places, and i've been lucky on a lot of the most potentially soul-sucking grinds up thru this point (DWH, basilisk jaw, bowfa, and zenytes). i know i still have plenty of room to be cursed in the lategame, though.
the diary items at the bottom are elite diaries i finished since 2k total. the only ones i have left now are western elite (93 slayer), karamja elite (86+5 rc) and desert elite (85 prayer, which i have banked, and 91 thieving).
goals from here? bossing bossing bossing, but breaking it up with plenty of skilling and clogging because pvm is fun but i also can't do it constantly (my brain and hands both wear out from it). itemized...
elite combat achievements tier! I'm not that close to it, but i'm not super far off, and i want it both for the QoL unlocks it gives + because going for it will help me expand my PvM experience!
slayer, lots of slayer, to gradually push to 95 for hydra, but also to do the important slayer bosses along the way. just unlocked cerb, but also looking forward to araxxor & thermy for their unlocks soon. also plan to do as many other grinds on task as i can: TDs, then kril after TDs are done, maybe mix some wildy slayer in and go for voidwaker pieces if/when i'm feeling up to it.
non-task bosses whenever i'm in the mood so i don't hate any of the grinds too much. Zulrah (i've already started as you can see, but need that blowpipe & magic fang); muspah (haven't started yet), Bandos.
raids when i'm in the mood/have the time - recently found a discord that's both very welcoming to learners & very casual, the right balance for me to finally dip some toes in. have done a few each of CoX and ToA but at some point i want to really properly get into them and get some uniques.
grinding out remaining diary reqs
gradually working towards max (i know i'm only like, maybe halfway to max in terms of total XP, maybe less than half EHP-wise given that my slow skills like RC and agil are lower, but it's crazy that it almost feels within sight. not CLOSE at hand, but not unachievable, either.)
building bank value just for number go up sake. currently around 800m, give or take - i wanna see it say 1b :) (no bank pic with this post tho because i haven't cleaned it up in a while... I'm unhappy with how it looks)
getting more clog slots, always, :)

Jr Year ep4
This is me live blogging bc I need to get thoughts out also would love fandom friends full spoilers bellow the cut just so no one accidentally reads anything they don’t want to this will be long
I have wanted most if not all of Zac's and Murph's shirts this season
I still have issues with the multiclass system but also no school thing has made the most sense in universe
I believe you and that's why I'm not saying anything is SUCH a trouble friend mood
"what's the drinking age?" "you have murdered SO many people"
BRENANS FACE WHEN KALINA SAYS I'M NOT BAD ANYMORE OH LORDS
the whole Kalina/Cassandra/Kristen scene is so nerve wrecking and interesting and once again I can talk so much about this topic and I know I have critized Kristen's approach but that's bc honestly I do have issue w it despite understanding it but it does make for an interesting arc and with this conversation it does seem like she believes in this domain of faith on the unknown. I will at some point talk more about from the point of someone who also left a culty religious thing but was still expected to perform similarly once out of it but my thoughts are still not the most organized
that being said I do not trust kalina and i do love cassandra
when you're in the dark I'm there holding your hand why am i crying
not kvx still being a thing lmao so Brennan
oh I just love how complicated but absolutely Bill Seacaster is the whole trust thing, the money going to the nemesees, there being a whole department, honestly that's a department I'd work for it's basically spy and gossip stuff
but also poor Fabian having to go through all this head ache stuff alone
watch Caperslolly Cattlekrush not be a direct nemesis but someone from her party be yes Fabian get that service!
I too keep thinking it is rat ccrushers no t grinders and will absolutely get it wrong
the gorthlax art is PERFECT
my school nurse did not have sweat pants but ok murph(i also absolutely am not from the us idk why i keep pointing out diferences)
they each will have a foil in my head so why just one owlbear contender? also is riz in the bloodrush team?
grinding for xp is so much weirder and terrible imo in this context also should be less effective bc like lbr experience is important like thinking on your feet etc like yes they are probably equal level and Brenan will play them well but they should absolutely not be as good as the bad kids at actual adventuring
I love how they all are so agro tho bc I get it and love the energy and I would absolutely be that mad
YES SOMEONE CALLED OUT THE HIPOCRISY
xp isn't bad if you at least still DO INTERESTING STUFF TO GET IT
if brenan makes them like grinding i will become as agro as the bad kids so far lol
gorthlax gave great advice, that being said i do hope they get a lil bit petty and end annoying grinders
nooo Gorgug (cries) I really want him to do well
listen I am so emo about gorgu's storyline like it's just no thoughts just feels and all of them
listen i don't do character builds but it does not sound to me like artificer and barbarian are THAT ill fitted, like yes the require different focus levels and types but they are also USED in different moments, nothing is stopping Gorgug from using his down time to come up with gadgets that work WITH his strenght and dex and rage and then use reckless abandon in battles. I think even th solar lasso is very much an example of that because it uses his strenghts, he's realing it in with atheltics checks iirc or how his shoes have jump like yes absolutely a challenge and not the most obvious but people are acting like it's impossible when it absolutely isn't
we love Corsica Jones
Riz helping Kristen <3
Brenan is absolutely having so much fun with Ayada's messages
Listen Fig does not need to go to warlock classes, no one in the school knows she is a warlock just do bard and barbarian and help your friend
also i get that procrastination girl
Please I want Fig and Gorgug to work on a song together and for us to get that scene so bad
Aelwynn is a whole entire mood
well that answers me: riz is not on bloodrush
I KNEW BRENNAN MADE THEM STUPID RATS TOO GOOD I HATE IT BUT I LOVE IT
wouldn't detect magic tell riz what enhancements she has? cause otherwise it's nnot THAT useful for spies (which is reason #1 the gadget exists)
oh brennan REALLY made people we will all hate
Yes Bucky I adore him
someone please go home with Fabian
ohhh Brennan put extra stakes at Fig just quitting/failling auegfort since she technically doesn't need it
oh warlock classes are night classes, kinda love that for Fig and also good for her being good at it
also looove the talk about exchanges and that
FIg could make an album out of pressure and expextations that woul be rad as hell
RAGH we love him
LISTEN Ragh should be like party guy, he was absolutely popular and is older and it takes stuff away from the bad kids to do
oh Fabian goes into it immediately we stan
Listen Ally is MASTER of weird ass energies and I love them for it
they truly are such dorks and somehow cool at the same time
I cannot tell if they don't know milkyriver's name or if they are benedict cumberbunching it and I love that
literally everything kalina says is so threatening
also the bad kids should count as followers of cassandra like they are not clerics sure but they ablsolutely belive in her... do only clerics/paladins count?
LISTEN BRENNAN WE DON'T NEED MORE PROBLEMS
oh the shard and red thing that was in one of the arts
oh I REALLY thought they were gonna split party this
I do hope the party still goes well
