I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.
#personal#delete later#no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together#seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy#say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices#in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony#redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation#(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite#if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc#if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same#if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same#while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level#a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you#i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics#and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with#if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter#i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures#(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years#i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing#classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

Casting Call Deadline Extension!
Hi everyone,
Thank you to everyone who has submitted an audition so far! We're going through them slowly, but we wanted to extend the deadline by a few days to give more people a chance to submit!
Our new deadline is: July 24, 2024 at 11:59pm PDT (GMT-7)
In particular, we've only received a handful of auditions for one of the leads, Mulligan, and would love to get more femme-presenting, BIPOC talent to apply!
MULLIGAN (Late 30’s to early 40’s) is a logical and experienced detective, always approaching cases without letting personal opinions cloud her judgment. After 8 years of being on the police force, she quit her job due to irreconcilable issues and became a private detective. She doesn’t believe in anything supernatural or paranormal, so becoming a ghost turns her whole world-view upside down. Despite how unsettling the situation is and how limited she feels as a ghost, she’s determined to solve the case and bring the serial killer to justice.
More details about some of the other roles we're casting for below!
This is a paid, indie budget project. We'd love to get some SoCal-based talent who are able to record in-person but all roles are open to remote VAs as well.
We are looking for:
2 Leads (1M/1F)
2 Supporting (1M/1F)
A variety of smaller, tertiary roles (all genders)
Deadline: July 24, 2024 at 11:59pm PDT (GMT-7)
All audition details & the submission form are on this document.
Please read through all instructions carefully and reach out if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing your auditions!

I wonder why people are anxious about cliff hangers and a series taking it's natural time to build character development over multiple story arcs like ye olden days?
I think people have truly lost any ability to be patient with storytelling.
‘I don’t understand this’ They’ll explain it if you wait.
‘I don’t like how this episode left things hanging’ There’s a continuation next week.
‘This character is flat’ Wait for them to be fleshed out.
So many of the complaints I see about shows lately are people being confused by things THAT THE SHOW WANTS YOU TO BE CONFUSED BY THATS THE FUN OF MYSTERY AND FORESHADOWING YOU ABSOLUTE GOBLINS THE MAIN CHARACTER IS ALSO CONFUSED AND THEYRE GONNA DO A BIG REVEAL AND EXPLANATION LATER IF YOU WOULD JUST FUCKING WAIT

Casting Call Deadline Approaching!
There's about 3 days left to submit to our casting call for Ghost InSpectors!

Hi there, I hope you don't mind me reaching out through here as I couldn't find an email and as I don't have twitter blue I couldn't message you there! I was just wondering if the roles of Kygo and Bluebell were only for BIPOC actors? I am a trans/enby voice actor who would like to try for those roles, but I didn't want to apply if they are only open to BIPOC actors as I'm not one! Thank you so much!
Authentic casting is our top priority and will never cast people who don't fit categories such as race, disability and trans/nb! Characters without stated categories are open to anyone, eg. a character not having a specified race.
If you feel our season two characters aren't for you, that's okay! There maybe characters in future seasons that call to you.
Unfortunately our season two casting has seen a lot more white people auditioning for bipoc roles which will all have to be disqualified.

annual reminder comparing mercer cosplaying as a *green* skinned recognizable fictional villian from a video game to the practice of racist minstrelsy in the u.s. is extraordinarily careless at best, disregards the real pain and suffering the history of black and brown face caused on living human beings, allows misinformation and falsehoods to perpetuate as fact, and generally the tendency of fandom to take well defined concepts with specific meanings and watering that meaning down to anything that can be used to mindlessly attack someone you don't like is actively harmful to racialized and marginalized people. shut the actual fuck up.

It wouldn’t be historically accurate for my story to include BIPOC!
This is an argument often made about European-style fantasy media like Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and Disney’s Frozen. Audiences, often white, assume that due to the majority-white setting, adding any visible number of BIPOC to the story would be unrealistic.
What these critics fail to realize is that BIPOC do in fact live, and have lived, in these settings, and records of BIPOC presence in places assumed to be majority-white have been buried, written out, or not taught due to white supremacist and/or colonial bias in the field of history. There are historical European settings that were far more diverse than is often portrayed. Consider:
The Moorish Empire exerted an extensive influence over life and culture in Southern Europe from Spain from 711 to 1492
The Ottomans were heavily involved in European affairs up until the treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, but still considered a part of Europe even through the 19th century
The sheer size of the Roman Empire ensured the continued movement of people from various backgrounds within the Mediterranean well until the end of the Byzantine Empire.
“Historical accuracy” should not be used as an excuse for media to be exclusively white in its casting. While there are places which are or were predominantly white, there will always be factors like global trade and immigration that bring multiculturalism to their doors.
And even if the presence of a certain demographic is unrealistic for a certain setting? Consider that we’ve accepted far worse inaccuracies in historical fiction in the name of artistic license. Consider that our understanding of human history is, and will always be, incomplete.

Also that quote Oppenheimer used is from the Hindu holy text the Bhagavad Gita. The furor in India by Hindu nationalists over it being used during a bedroom scene in the movie is stupid, but y'all still need to stop making off with bits and pieces of other people's religions with zero understanding and commodifying them, let alone using it as merch for a movie about genocide.
okay okay so like i don’t wanna kill the party but i just saw an instagram shop selling a shirt that says now i am become death the destroyer of worlds in barbie font and i just sigh i just like i get the novelty of barbie and oppenheimer weekend but i have got to stress the bomb changed the entire world forever and wiped out over a quarter of a million people i think maybe we gotta kinda take a step back here when we start selling it as if it’s fun hot girl summer fodder

here’s the thing.
if you’re one of the people celebrating our flag means death’s cancellation for whatever reason right now, i need you to realize that this is just a sign that whatever you love is next.
and i’m not saying that out of spite. having your favourite show cancelled is awful, i wouldn’t wish it on anyone. but if our little-gay-pirate-show-that-could can’t get its third and final season, the future of queer media is extremely grim.
ofmd was the definition of a sleeper hit. hbo max had no faith in it when the first season came out. it gained popularity purely through word-of-mouth. but it became one of max’s biggest shows, and it’s since been marketed as their flagship series.
it was the #1 most in-demand series in the world for 8 weeks (7 of those weeks consecutively). it’s currently in the 99.7th percentile of the comedy genre, meaning it’s in higher demand than 99.7% of all comedy series in the u.s. it has a 94% audience and critics score on rotten tomatoes. it’s the most in-demand hbo original series even above euphoria, succession, and the last of us.
it was nominated for 16 awards for the first season alone, including a GLAAD award and a peabody award. the second season was just nominated for an art directors guild award, which it was previously nominated for and won in the same category for season one.
besides awards, ofmd is critically-acclaimed and praised for its representation (including a cast of majority queer, bipoc, and disabled characters) and themes of anti-colonialism, challenging gender norms/toxic masculinity, and self-discovery/acceptance. it also has a diverse team of directors and writers consisting of several bipoc, women, and queer/trans/non-binary people.
on top of all of this, the plan for the show all along was only ever for three seasons. david jenkins only wanted three seasons for the full romcom structure to tell ed and stede’s story. that’s it. nothing more.
this isn’t an attempt to make you care about the show. but ofmd’s cancellation isn’t just a loss for the fanbase and the cast/crew. it’s a sign that it does not matter how successful or profitable shows highlighting lgbtq+ (or otherwise inclusive) narratives are or how many big names are involved. ofmd would not have been cancelled if it were a straight romcom. they would’ve magically found the budget. but corporate greed doesn’t care about us. they have no respect for queer people or queer media. and in the age of streaming, it’s only a matter of time until we lose all of it.

As someone who grew up on Rooster Teeth, who consumed so much of their content during my formative years, today's news hits a little harder. I'm so upset for the people who lost their jobs and livelihoods due to this huge downsizing on WB part (not to mention the fact most of them found out through a twitter post!) - it pains me to hear that some of their projects will never get a real conclusion or that the hard work they have been putting in for years might be forgotten.
I'm holding out hope that there will be some sort of archival process or maybe the RT website will remain live so that people can watch what is there (maybe no longer behind a paywall?).
That being said, RT was never a perfect company and to pretend that it was is doing a disservice to everyone who has been hurt by the decisions of their coworkers, the treatment of BIPOC by the audience, and toxic work environment that surrounded their productions. We should not use this time to discredit those experiences, but remain aware that these situations can coexist simultaneously.
For the cast/crew/production teams that have led these projects, I am hopeful that this will not be the last time we see them apart of content. I know most people are concerned about the state of RWBY, RVB, Gen: Lock, etc, and I do think these IP's will be picked up. If we're lucky, they will be along with the teams responsible for them in the first place. But I urge you to not use this time to talk about these shows, but instead send some comfort to those who are now out of a job.
