Hey! Do you think there’s any chance they might not make Romione canon in the upcoming HBO series because of the popularity of other pairings and JKR’s somewhat recent statements concerning the ship?
fair warning this is gonna be a long post!
you know anon, i’m not gonna deny that the possibility of romione not being canon in the hbo series doesn’t keep me up at night HOWEVER COMMA-
I believe romione will be safe because i’m placing a lot, if not all, of my faith in the upcoming hbo series being repeatedly described as a "faithful" adaptation of the 7 novels. which we can deduce to mean romione friends to lovers slow burn endgame and all that good stuff (maybe i'll talk about the potential of book romione and the serial tv medium some other time)

and sure, it can all be marketing/pandering/etc. but i find it so hard to feel cynical about hbo because i love LOVE their shows and i'm of the belief that they know how to tell a good ass story (and romione happens to be a good ass romance subplot). i also have such positive feelings about the showrunner Frances Gardiner (consulting prod on succession and also has killing eve under her belt) who JKR chose herself and one of the exec producers of the show who's set to direct of a bunch of episodes Mark Mylod (succession, the menu, tlou, got)!!!! and if you know me at all you'll know that succession is one of the main pillars of my personality and i fucking love that show so bad I would follow anyone who was part of the making of that show off a cliff if they asked me to. and Mark Mylod is a fantastic fucking episodic director who's directed and produced some of the best episodes of television ever, so i know he knows how to tell a good story. and though i'm a lot less familiar with Gardiners' work, she is a female creative who has some of my personal favourite episodes listed in her imdb (chiantishire, living+, tailgate party) who's pitch of the show made joanne give her the job so.... and y'all know im a canon bootlicker and love the books so all i'll say is.. real recognizes real.

so knowing the creative team behind hp series had a direct hand in making my favourite show of all time gets me so excited and giddy!!!!
but here's where my personal theories and speculations start: I really think with this hbo series, JKR is on a mission is create something wholly and newly hers. she was barely involved creatively in the production of the movies until DH pt. 1 and 2 and the movies have almost become an entity of its own that's drifted so far away from her. of course i realize me even just talking sympathetically about JKR is deeply touchy and might piss some people off but as a fellow creative, i feel for her man!! when i think of the best books in the series in my opinion that are filled with the best bits of world building and political commentary, what i find is that GoF was handed to a director who didn't even read the book, OotP was the shortest movie in the franchise despite being the longest book and how it entirely missed the Quibbler plot and all of harry's rage, or HBP that was filled to the brim with *chefs kiss* tom/voldemort lore which was done a complete disservice in the grey and brown sludgy mess that is the HBP movie.

and knowing that JKR now has a strained relationship or had a falling out with most of the top dogs involved in the films like Kloves and Yates (hallelujah what who said that) and Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe means this show has the chance to be a behemoth that’s entirely joanne’s, like the books are. it’ll be free of Kloves' Hermione and harmony (harry x hermione) favouritism or Watson's take on Hermione's character that makes my ass itch or Yate’s complete inability to direct his actors and make non-action scenes have heart, soul and heft. but i also can’t not address the elephant in the room: this section of the discussion is filled with every shade of grey possible because what led to the falling outs was that they all vehemently disagreed with JKR's anti-trans views and good on them they absolutely should! but like.............. i hated kloves' writing and his butchering of ron's character, i think yates is a static and boring director and im not a fan of emma's acting so like... a win is a win? NO IT'S NOT. but IT IS. BUT IT'S SO NOT. but do you see what i'm getting at???
the point i'm trying to make is that joanne is not the same person she was when she was first writing the books or when the movies were being made. I think she's a lot more ruthless and cutthroat now and while i disagree with her methods and condemn her transphobia.... i think this newfound hardness to her will lend itself to making the hbo series the best HP adaptation it can be, I'M SORRY it's absolutely fucked and i acknowledge and abhor her gender critical politics as a queer woman but im also an artist who just wants good, high quality stories to be told 😔😩
and as for the other popular ships and JKR's somewhat recent comments about romione:
I think its safe to say that joanne dgaf about this fandom and what's popular in it anymore LMFAOOOO 😭😭😭 i genuinely respect that she's always stood ten toes down about how draco's not some antihero, bad boy love interest and at best is a cautionary tale on prejudiced bullies, so I don't think that's changing anytime soon. especially considering that the dramione cottage industry that its fans have made is more or less a reactionary "fuck you" to joanne and canon which they do by writing fanfic about crimes against women and making merch and binding physical copies of said fanfics (really showing it to the big baddie transphobic DV survivor by *checks notes* auctioning hermione off as a sex slave) so I doubt she'd ever consider other ship's popularity seriously. as for the possibility of harry and hermione becoming endgame um..... if the show plans to faithfully adapt the books then we'd get harry and hermione’s quintessential sibling dynamic plus we’re already free from Kloves (also i have faith in francesca and mark knowing that harmony are just plain BORING) so i think the chances, again, are low. and if joanne really wants to stick it to her old colleagues, she can go down the route of pushing romione that much harder (and she really wouldn’t have to do much, it’s all in the books already) 😭
as for the comments on romione that she’s made in recent years, i think a lot of it’s been blown out of proportion or have gone through a terrible game of telephone. what she said (paraphrasing here) about ‘wishing she’d handled ron/hermione differently because a lot of what went into them was a wish fulfillment fantasy’ has turned into ‘jk rowling regrets making romione endgame???!!’ which is just *takes a drag from a cigarette* just another tuesday around here. i also would link to two meta posts by @saintsenara on the topic of endgame romione which i wholeheartedly agree with it
all i have to say is that going into making this show i hope joanne remembers that she based ron’s character off of a person in her life she liked when she was younger and who is still a good friend of hers now 😭😔
you guys probably know i’m in animation school which is basically film school in a different font. so i’m quite literally training to one day work in the story department on projects and work alongside writers, directors and producers, so this stuff means a lot to me! she and the creative team behind this upcoming show have the chance to make something really special and i’m finding it hard not to root for them!!!!!

Why TotK fails Zelda
Heads up, this is a long post. Ive cut this down like a motherfucker but it still reads very long. My thoughts are divided into four main categories;
1. Her relationship with her magic & tech
2. Her relationship with Hyrule
3. Her relationship with Link
4. Her relationship with the player
Also, these are my opinions, I'm certain there are people with far better analysis skills than me! I am just in love with this franchise and a little disappointed with the recent game. Zelda as a character holds a special place in my heart and its sad that her character was done dirty like this.
Theres a TLDR at the end and before I forget, SPOILERS!!!
1. Her relationship with her magic & tech
Zelda is not someone who magic came easily to, and I think BotW & AoC did a great job exploring that. They contrasted her natural interest with the sheikah technology and her lack of power and it was 😘👌
How did TotK do? With the Zonai tech being the main selling point, how would Zelda, a scholar at heart, interact with it? To my memory, the only interaction she has is to put Mineru's soul into a piece of Sheikah tech and hand it to a construct.
Well what about magic? Finding out she has light AND time powers was at first a great throwback to OoT with the Sage of Time. The fact that her Time magic awakened immediately unlike the Light magic in the last game was a nice contrast. But then, she immediately has a similar dilemma, she can't USE her magic to propel herself forward because she doesnt know how. Unlike BotW though, she has the "mother" she was lacking to teach her. This was a decent set-up. It was different enough to be its own thing but still was familiar enough. This is up to memory 4 - Mineru's Council
The issue the NEXT MEMORY, memory 5 - Gerudo Assualt shows her being even more proficient than Sonia. We don't see her train, or struggle, or even ask a question about how the stone works. She just does. It's not until memory 8 do we see her get any guidance about her powers? And even then we don't see her attempt recall at all. In the next memory she simply uses it perfectly and effortlessly.
The purpose of her strengthening Time Magic was to get back home. Yet, she gets back home by swallowing a sacred stone, that she already had the ability to do at any point. She turns into the LIGHT dragon, using her LIGHT magic to strengthen the Master Sword. Her whole arc about her magic was pointless because in the end she used the powers from the previous game for everything important.
2. Her relationship with Hyrule
Positives first! Its clear that Zelda loves her people, and during the 7? year gap she obviously took the time to connect with them and problem solve. Penn's quest really demonstrates this, and so does the Hateno school quest. (Even if the children don't believe in the Calamity). I found it very endearing that the people had such faith in her, that even with Ganondorf causing havoc with her face, people refused to believe it. The Great Fairies MUST have seen wrong because it was dark, Dorephan MUST have been mistaken, the Stable Trotters MUST have seen someone else - Zelda wouldn't do that.
I additionally liked that Zelda wasn't immediately trying to set up a monarchy again. In fact, she seemed to be doing the opposite. She wasn't living in Central Hyrule, at Looking Landing, she was living in Hateno. She was a teacher, and on some level a researcher (even if the Don Dons were scrapped ideas from the first trailer).
But the second she goes to the past, she is put back in her box. Her interests in tech are non-existant, she does not interact with anyone who isn't royalty, the King doesn't listen to her about Ganondorf and tells her to not to worry - after all she's just supposed to wear that white dress and hope her magic works soon. She's regressed back to before the Calamity, waiting for something terrible she knows is coming and is powerless to stop.
Crucially, she doesn't speak to Ganondorf once.
This is by far the most egregious waste of their characters in my opinion, and I've just deleted a 3 paragraph Ganondorf discussion - another time. But come on! This is legitimately the PERFECT scenario for Zelda to find about about WHY people opposed her royal family, WHY everyone she's ever loved died in Calamity caused by this guy, WHY she's had to go through all this. But no, if they did talk, it wasn't on screen.
Ive seen in translations of parts of one of the interviews with a developer saying she was able to see what a ruler should be like by going to the past, but until a see an official source I'm going to hope that's not true
3. Her relationship with Link
"Link is still entrusted with the role of protecting Princess Zelda." - Hidemaro Fujibayashi https://www.npr.org/2023/09/13/1199307678/zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom-dlc-video-game. Maybe I'll write a post about Link sometime, but I'm focusing on just him and Zelda.
Whether you ship the two or not, the pair would obviously have a unique bond from both fighting the Calamity and losing the Champions/everyone. So, how did the pair cope with the destruction of everything the love? How did Zelda come to terms with the ruins of Castle Town, the harsh reality of all those who were dead? Zelda doesn't have Link's amnesia to temporarily soften the inital blow.
TotK explores none of this.
Similarly, there is a level of formality on how Zelda speaks of Link. When she tells Rauru of Link she starts, "He is a royal knight. He had been originally appointed for my protection, but later he became a hero by saving both me and Hyrule from a great evil". Not "he and I became close" or even "he became my friend". Zelda is talking to the two people closest to her right now,
All their interactions are the bare minimum.

Link has ALWAYS been a self insert for the player, but he's still a character, and more recently Nintendo has been acting like having emotions means a player can't project onto them. Zelda is Link's closest person, and when she returns he is piece of cardboard, at least help her up!
4. Her relationship with the player
First, as everyone who played BotW will know, many things were removed or changed in TotK to allow it to be standalone for new players. Sheikah tech was removed, important characters forgot Link, the majority of the last game was rarely if ever mentioned. Kass
However TotK does not properly establish Link and Zelda for new fans AND doesnt not elaborate for old fans. They interact twice until the end - the intro and memory 1. All of her characterisation is in that little history moment, the rest of it is 50% sacred power lore and 50% time power lore. Additionlly, anyone who is new to the game has no context for her light powers.
Actually, TotK literally retcons her light magic to be from Rauru and not Hylia. Which was the WHOLE POINT of BotW so great sequelling there guys.
TLDR: The Conclusion
Wow, you made it this far. Or you skipped to end, I would too. My main gripes with Zelda:
> She doesn't interact with Zonai Tech.
> Her arc is about learning time power to go home, only for her to not use said magic and instead use the light magic from the last game to fix the sword and be a light dragon.
> Having her worries about Ganondorf shot down by the King and not holding her ground/ insisting (did you learn nothing from Rhoam??)
> never interacting with Ganondorf him being in Hyrule as a diplomat
> nintendos approach to her and link, they dont once touch while both conscious. Not even a handshake or pat on the shoulder. See images above with prev. Zelda and Link.
> the instance on making it not complicated for accessibility to new players, but also not fleshing it out enough to be compelling on its own.

AN: This guide is not meant to encourage you to start loving Russian language or culture. As much as I personally love Nikolai, I'll absolutely understand, there are people out there, that may feel bad, seeing him in CoD franchise, because of everything going on right now. This is not a call to start loving him, not a call to start describing this character as an absolute angel (he is not and never was). If seeing such a guide makes you feel bad - I'm genuinely sorry, and I'm open to a dialogue to make it better.
I tried to cover the most commonly used themes. However, it's impossible to make it short, yet all-covering. So please don't hesitate to come into my DMs with 'hey, I want Nikolai to say this thing in my fic - could you translate it in Russian for me?'. I'm always super-happy to help!

Cultural extras to get in the mood
I sometimes meet this take, that Russian, as well as German language, sounds menacing or harsh. And as much as I understand, that it is subjective perception, I have something to add: you can modulate Russian speech as well as any other. You can sound like softest softie, coo and purr in Russian, if you want. Here is a good example: a guy just reads a poem, but you try and tell me, he is not straight seducing you.
Very nice perspective on how non-tourist Russia looks like. The guy travels to places, that still look and feel like USSR and somehow manages to survive. Don't mind him rambling, how good was soviet life - he doesn't mean it, he just says whatever people, he meets, would love to hear.
Another good channel to explore non-tourist Ru and some extreme weathers. Don't worry, there are no jumpscares and nothing scary happens on the videos.
Russian winter is a tricky one, because -40 С in Yakutsk can sometimes feel softer as -20 in Moscow. Humidity and wind are the keys.
No, vodka is not the only alcohol option) You can write a Ru character, that despises vodka and it will be 100% legit.
If you need domestic and interior references to Nikolais youth in soviet Ru - I can recommend HBOs Chernobyl series. An accuracy and attention to domestic details there is so great that it gets uncanny sometimes.
Stefan Kapičić does very tender and smooth version of Slavic accent. And he is 100% right to do so - it works good both for his character and the audience. If you want to hear heavier versions of Russian accent - here is a little funny video.

A Loveletter to the How to train your Dragon-Trilogy
I love this trilogy so much because it is a safe place for me, this world is a safe place, these characters are a safe place. I am eighteen years old and still doubting myself sometimes. Growing up is not easy and this trilogy shows us that perfectly. It thought us that letting go isn’t a weakness, it’s a strength. It thaught us to do things your own way, to discover yourself and your strengths. It thaught us that true friendship will never end. That true love can exist in our worlds, it doesn’t matter if it’s romantic love or love between friends. Love is Love. Since the first movie we witness how Hiccup finds his own way and comes into his own, to become a Chief, a friend, a soldier, a husband and a father. His whole story touches me so deeply because I see myself in him, this is also why I love the whole trilogy and the shows and short films equally. They tell his story. I believe there is a Hiccup in every one of us. This whole Franchise has just giving me a feeling of pure joy and it feels like Home for me. After seeing all these movies and shows after a so long (and seeing them a hundred times) it was like coming home, that a part of me will always feel joy when I think about httyd. I am dealing with Depression so for me it’s like a little saving grace when I see or hear something httyd releated. It became part of my life again and I am so grateful that it is. It’s for me at least one of the best stories in cinematic history that were ever told. I don’t care if there is now Sipder Verse, for me httyd will always have the status as a superior trilogy, that I love to revisit and think about. It isn’t just a trilogy of movies or a simple TV-Show to a movie, it’s a journey about growing up. I have a lot love for this trilogy because I basically grew up with it alongside the Trilogies Madagascar, Shrek and Kung Fu Panda. I have so much love for this franchise in general, I just really enjoy it for what it is: a magnificent story about a boy and his dragon, who became best friends and will forever friends even if millions of miles parted them. Hiccup and Toothless will always love each other even if they are separated for their own safety, they grow together and they will always remember one another and the beautiful memories they share. There will always be something that connects them. IT’S YOU AND ME, BUD. ALWAYS. This why I love all of The movies and shows (tolerate T9R now to some degree) and it’s sometimes hard for me to see, when people hate on this movies and shows. Especially on the hidden world. I know not everyone likes it but they have to understand it’s hard to see for someone who loves it. I heard from some people that the hate in the fandom kinda destroyed their existence with httyd. I personally don’t want that because httyd appeals to some many and means to so many others so much. It kinda makes me sad to see, because httyd gives me one of the best feelings of enjoyment and inspiration that I never felt before. I know I can’t change some minds, but I just want to say all this, because everyone deserves understanding and respect. I know I posted in the past some hatred stuff against T9R and I regret everything of it, because I can now understand and feel with these people.
Last but not least I hope this franchise will again bring some more people together and the same happiness I feel with it. In some kind of way we share all the same love. We love the httyd franchise. ❤️‍🔥
Never let the dragon flames burn out in your heart, it will always be there in good and bad times. We have all THE HEART OF A CHIEF, AND THE SOUL OF A DRAGON.

You stared at the clock on the wall behind your Professor as you willed time to go faster, you were just so restless, you needed to see him. It felt as though you hadn’t seen your boyfriend in weeks. In reality, it was only a few days, but a few days without any form of contact from Dalton felt like forever. You knew why you hadn’t seen or spoken to him, he felt guilty.
As soon as the bell rang, you packed up your things as quickly as possible, causing your friend to laugh at you. “that desperate to see your little Picasso?”
You rolled your eyes, “well I haven’t seen him for a few days, he’s been sick,” the lie fell from your lips so easily so you fooled even yourself into believing it was true, “I’ll see you later,” you waved at your friend before heading in the direction of Dalton’s dorm room on the other side of the school.
The door was open and he was standing at his easel when you walked in, his long hair loose around his shoulders. You smiled and kissed him on the cheek, “hey.”
“Hey, Y/N,” he smiled and turned to face you, letting you give him a proper kiss, paint smudged across his forehead and along the bridge of his nose. He looked so gorgeous like this.
“Are you okay? You sounded freaked when you called,” you started as you sat at the end of his bed.
He sighed and sat next to you, fiddling with the frayed material of his jeans, “I guess that I’m just worried that the door won’t stay closed.”
“We’ll get through it together, just like we always do.”
A warm hand cupped your cheek, a thumb brushing over the cut on your cheek, “it’s going to scar,” he whispered, “I can’t believe that I hurt you.”
His big blue eyes welled up with tears and you placed your hand over the one he had on your cheek, “it wasn’t you. Dalton, I love you.”
He bit his lip as he stood abruptly, his fingers tangled in his hair. You let him pace around the room in silence, it looked like he was at war with himself. Finally, he looked at you sadly, “I can’t do this anymore, Y/N.”
Your heart plummeted as you stared at him, trying to process his words, “what?”
“I can’t let what happened last week ever happen again. I won’t let it happen again.”
You stood up and walked over to him, cupping his cheeks, “it won’t ever happen again.”
“Y/N, I can’t…” he trailed off, almost breathless, “I can’t take the risk. I have to let you go, I love you.”
“Who are you to make the decision for the both of us? You can’t just end our relationship just like that,” you snapped your fingers, “just because something bad has happened!” your voice was rising now but you couldn’t help it. It was like he was giving up.
Dalton took your hands in his, “do you think that this is easy for me? Y/N, I almost killed you.”
“But you didn’t!”
“But I wanted to!” he shouted, causing you to take a couple of steps backwards, he closed his eyes for a brief moment, looking pained. When he opened them they were full of tears again, “I could feel how much he wanted to hurt you. Wanted to kill you. I love you Y/N but I can’t put you in danger again, I won’t.”
The bitter words that had sprung to your lips had died on your tongue as you saw how broken he looked, “fine,” you whispered as tears rolled down your cheeks, “it seems as though you’ve made up your mind,” he opened his mouth to reply, tears streaming down his cheeks, “I don’t want to hear it, Dalton,” your voice broke, “just stay away from me,” you sniffled and quickly left the room.
As soon as you were in the safety of your own dorm, you broke down and sank to your knees, crying into your arms, you can’t believe he would just give up.
As the weather started to get warmer your heart seemed to mend itself, it was difficult, at first it the pain was unbearable and you didn’t know how you would be able to get through it, but you did. You and Dalton virtually lived on opposite sides of the school, you didn’t have any classes together and he hated parties so you didn’t come across him. Dalton hadn’t even tried to call, but maybe that was for the best. You wouldn’t have picked up if he had.
Soon yours and Dalton’s relationship seemed like a distant memory, like something out of a summer dream and just like she had the year before, Dalton’s mom invited you to their Fourth of July party. You debated on not going but you decided that you couldn’t avoid him forever. Sooner or later you would run into him.
That’s where you found yourself at the precise moment, you were in the Lambert’s back garden, speaking with one of their neighbours. As you went to get a refill on your drink, a tall handsome figure went to stand at your side. You looked up at him, it looked as though he hadn’t slept in months and he’d cut his hair.
“I can’t dream without you,” he mumbled and you raised an eyebrow.
“I thought that was the point.”
He shook his head, “no I mean, I can’t sleep without you. I need you Y/N. I’m so sorry.”
You cupped his cheek, your thumb stroking across his skin gently, you still loved him, a part of you always would, “I can’t Dalton,” you sighed as his heart visibly broke and you stood up on your tiptoes to brush your lips against his.
That was the last time you saw him for a very long time.

What is the appeal/what do you like about Saw? I enjoy horror as a genre and have seen people post about saw a lot on here and had the opportunity to watch it so I did. But. I'm kind of confused? what I enjoy about horror is (a lot of different things, some of which are:) the anticipation, the contrast of good, pleasant times and the deeply horrific things which then happen, a plot that is unpredictable even if it's clear it will only end badly, I enjoy not knowing how exactly it will be bad and then the film slowly revealing that to me. Saw did very few of these things. Maybe it's just not a film for me, (I haven't watched many slashers and I can imagine they might be similar and it's just a subgenre I don't understand/am destined not to like?) but even so I just cannot understand what people enjoy about it??? from the get go it's grim and horrific, which means that when things get worse, they never really feel that bad because you have no example of goodness in that universe to compare it to? The characters are. Pretty two dimensional and also not necessarily likeable. Idk I could go on but I don't want to sound like a dickhead who loves the sound of their own voice writing a really critical review of something I don't understand. I feel like with the fanbase it has on this website, I must be missing something. Please enlighten me!!! And if you can't explain it I would love any articles/analyses of the franchise that go some way to explain why people like it if you know of any. Sorry for littering your inbox with this mini essay lol but I watched it last week and I'm still just like. I think you had it when you said, 'Maybe it's just not a film for me'. It really is as simple as that.
There isn't always a deeper meaning or some secret detail everyone else who does enjoy it is privy to. There is no magic answer that will enlighten you into the appeal that something holds for certain people.
That being said, you shouldn't feel confused or left out by being perturbed by something as polarizing as Saw lol.
I can't answer for everybody who likes this franchise because I'm sure everyone has different reasons but speaking solely for myself : I like these movies for all the reasons you listed that you don't.
These films are like chicken soup for my soul, and have been since I was about ten years old. They make me laugh, they provide me with catharsis, and ( contrary to your statement) I find the characters very charming. I could wax on about what these movies did for me at that tender age but I am not in the habit of analyzing why I love the things that I do ( I think I'd find some patterns I wouldn't want to acknowledge /coughs/ ). All I know is that when Hello Zepp starts playing at the end of every installment, my heart swells with uncomplicated joy.

Another 10 Disney hot takes/probably unpopular opinions

Not a fan of Meg and Hercules as a couple. I ADORE them having an innocent male lead and a jaded female love interest, but Meg's situation with Hades makes it feel very toxic. The movie is kinda confusing on whether or not she can refuse Hades; one minute he uses incentive to get her to do what she wants (which is bad enough; her freedom for Hercules' death), and then when she tells him the deal's off, he reminds her that she has no say in the matter. Following this, she rejects his deal and he forces her into being exposed so Hercules will make a deal. She does sacrifice herself for him in the end, but it still feels very iffy for me, particularly since the backbone of her resisting him isn't even "I can't let this guy get killed" but instead "I don't wanna fall in love after getting my heart broken and having sold my soul" (which is EXTREMELY valid, but so is the other point). Had Meg been a normal human and made a deal with Hades to save Hercules or help him earlier on during his training, it'd be so much better.

2. Disney needs needs to stop making sequels just because of financial success and actually work to craft a narrative that requires a sequel or two. It's risky (considering the first film could have negative critical or commercial success, as well as take time and resources away from other films at the studio), but would have a better payoff, imo. I enjoyed "Frozen 2" despite it's flaws, but the fact that it felt independent of the first film did make it feel like we could've used an entirely different cast and made the same story.

3. I need more musicals with a male lead--The last one we had was "Tarzan"--or "Hercules," depending on your criteria. The revival era has had female leads for all their musicals, with a male playing as a co-lead or a deuteragonist. I know the girls are MUCH more valuable at Disney due to the Disney princess line and musicals with a male lead may be harder to market (well, not really; "Aladdin" and "The Lion King" were the highest-grossing animated films at one point, and their remakes grossed over $1 billion).

4. "Moana" needed a bigger (main) roster--Something I love is a nice-sized amount of main characters in a movie. "Moana" only had Moana and Maui for most of the movie, and thus it wasn't as enjoyable for me in that respect. "Moana 2" is introducing new characters, so I hope they can hold my interest.

5. Involve the Anderson-Lopez team in more musicals outside of the "Frozen" franchise--they almost got to do this with "Gigantic," but it fell through. Their music has been great, so I really hope to see them in more musicals for Disney outside of Disney's "Frozen."

6. NEVER return to hybrid animation for a feature film--It's too disorienting for me personally, and while the animation for "Wish" wasn't bad, it definitely didn't have the storybook vibe it was going for except with backgrounds. It would look fine if it was a video game, though.

7. "Gigantic" should've been Disney's anniversary film instead of "Wish"-- I already did a post on this, so I'll just leave it at that.

8. Raya is one of the best Disney leads in a while--Granted, her movie could've been much better and I wish the color of her clothes reflected her culture instead of going for neutral colors, but Raya is the blueprint for a great protagonist. It's been mentioned before how she's a feminist icon without having to really show it in ways others have in films, by being a confident warrior with no discussion of marriage or gender inequality brought up in the film. She's also deliciously sassy and quick on her feet. I may have preferred her OG concept of being stoic, but her swagger makes her one of the more engaging Disney leads, particularly as the adorkable trait started to show up. Speaking of...

9. Ariel and Mulan are the best adorkable leads for a Disney protagonist--While I don't have much issue with Anna and Mirabel and don't really find Rapunzel or Moana that adorkable, Ariel and Mulan were the blueprints for a funny female lead, and they felt less forced than later leads.

10. Aladdin is one of the worst Disney princes--DON'T KILL ME! He used to be my favorite Disney prince, until I watched a "therapists react" video to Disney couples and they brought up the fact that Aladdin had lied to Jasmine several times over the course of the movie. Him being insecure is a great character trait (a common one with Disney leads since the 90s, really), but it's poor writing to make his romance with Jasmine be based on a lie. I'd rather he just kept tight-lipped about his identity when Jasmine caught him the first time rather than covering up with another lie.

Okay, so since we’re talking about Descendants, I really need to get this off my chest, it’s gonna be a bit long 😅
First of all, I have to say that I LOVE how creative you are with your stories, characters and designs!! Like, you pour so much soul into them and it’s unfortunately something that’s been very lacking lately at Disney! You did the Descendants thing so much better than they could!
There was so much that Disney could have done with the idea of a Fairytale Crossover to make this franchise stand apart from previous works that also went with it! Like, instead of having ALL the Disney characters exist at the exact same time and place, they could have existed on the same fictional continent or in the same fictional world but at different places and times so that all of their stories would have happened as they do in the animated movies. And instead of being their children, the protagonists could have been the grandchildren, great-grandchildren or distant relatives of SOME of them, because I truly don’t think that Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella or Ursula would ever want to have children, but Disney went with that because they needed to sell fashion dolls with as many aesthetics as possible (which is ironic because their outfits are soulless, atrocious and pretty much all look the same compared to the ones in Ever After High)!
Had it been only some of the Disney characters having distant relatives, it would have made more sense and they could have come up with an interesting story to explain why the descendants of specific Disney characters have been brought together at this magical school (which should have been much more grand and Hogwarts-like if you ask me)! Could have been a prophecy? A spell? A curse cast by Yen-Sid? The Evil Queen? Maleficent? Or maybe something that was caused a long time ago by multiple Disney Villains? Have these characters been brought here to undo something? Unleash something?
It reminds me of the Grimrose Girls book series by Laura Pohl, which gets often compared to Descendants but is actually more comparable to Ever After High because of this idea of a fate that the characters can’t escape. It’s set in a boarding school, where the protagonists find out that they, as well as the rest of the students, are doomed to repeat the gruesome endings of various fairytales, like the ones who came before them and have to find a way to break the curse before it reaches them too. Disney could have done something similar (not with the gruesome-endings stuff but rather with the setting and idea of a curse)!
Or they could have done something similar to Kingdom Hearts and have all these Disney characters exist in different universes and time periods but have some of their descendants be brought together to the dimension of Auradon for a specific reason! Doing all of this would have allowed for the Descendants franchise to stand apart from Ever After High, but instead they decided to be lazy and rip it off! They really needed to be more creative! Imagine the interesting world-building, the lore and the unique, whimsical designs and outfits that we could have had instead of… Leather and headphones. Disney fumbled really hard!
Right??? Yeah allll of this ☝️ You came up with like three different cool ideas right off the bat, and yet the giant corporation with swimming pools of money--nothing :p

Hello my loves, I started working on a little bit of an Edmund fic. Although I am trying to develop something of my own the Narnia franchise is definitely a source material.
It’s an Edmund x Reader fic for now with a few original characters.

Grief is a goodbye from love. It is the final gift we receive when we have wholeheartedly and honestly loved and were loved. It is the flag we wave around that screams “look at me, I was loved. I loved, I still love” and so we must carry our grief with pride and hold it high for it is proof of the sincere emotions we felt for one another which transcend life and death. We should cherish the grief and welcome it into our arms like we once welcomed our loved ones for it is their gift goodbye. And yet we run from it. We run from it until it finds us.
Edmund was currently running from it. Or rather towards it, seeing as he was trying to eliminate the source that caused it.
The men that had taken the lives of Edmunds most precious beings, his beloved siblings.
When Edmund heard of his sibling’s death he had long been aware of it. A wave of pain had overcome him. He had felt as if he had lost part of his soul and in a way he very much did. The boy who had burged into his chamber was carrying a message his heart had already received. Moreover he knew that their death was most unfair considering he was the only one deserving of being killed. they had been good people through and through their entire lives, they had been true to themselves and their morals.
Edmund couldn’t say the same for himself. He had betrayed them and risked their lives for his foolish desires. He was the only one deserving of being killed. He knew in his heart that he had betrayed them once again by not dying instead, by being spared of this terrible faith, by not being with them when they spoke their last words.
He felt himself a traitor of the highest degree.
His first thought had been to take his own life. To join his siblings and apologise to them. But he realised this would be the weak way out. If he wanted redemption he would have to suffer for it. He could only redeem himself and avenge the people closest to his heart if he lived through the pain.
And if he killed whoever took their lives. His siblings had been noble people, they rarely resorted to killing, even in times of war. Edmund wasn’t as pure. His soul would be tarnished anyway, there was no need to hold back now, not when his heart was aching and his lungs were burning and the image of their tortured faces haunted his thoughts.
He walked through the now empty castle. It was as if all life had left it, for Edmund it did. The kingdom was relieved in a way because they had still one monarch left. They had lost their compassionate and loyal queens and their brave king but they still had someone left, even if it was their least favourite one. Edmund had known that the popularity of his siblings surpassed his own by a landslide, but now was not the time to focus on his image amongst the people he ruled, not for him anyway. In a way he felt he had also betrayed his people by being the only one left, they didn’t deserve to lose their rulers the way they did. He knew taking over their responsibilities would be a difficult task but one he was willing to take on.
The king gathered his best swordsmen and ordered his smiths to forge the best weapons they possibly could.
“They’ll be long gone by the time we arrive, your Majesty, they most likely left right after .. after the .. the incident” Althea tried to suggest. Edmund turned to his advisor and studied his face. He had a look of worry in his eyes mixed with a hint of pity. Edmund frowned at the idea that Althea was pitying him. “Perhaps they have, but their elaborate scheme couldn’t have been orchestrated by a far, they must have had a base somewhere near the temple. If anything it should give us a clue to where they are headed next.”.
With that Edmund got up and moved towards the door “We leave at dawn, I suppose you’ll be joining us?” he turned slightly to Althea but only enough to catch a glimpse of him in the corner of his eye. “Of course your highness.” Althea replied softly, bowing to his King. “Good, thank you for your help Althea, I appreciate your support” Edmund replied quickly and left the room to disappear into his chamber.
It was late at night, he knew that he should be in bed right now but how could he ? How could he rest knowing his sibling's killer was still out there? How could he ever rest again knowing he had failed to protect the only people ever dear to him. Ever since the murder Edmund had been consumed by this disgusting, rotting guilt. It had infested him as soon as the life left their bodies and was now consuming every part of him. It ran through his veins and blackened his heart, draining it of love and replacing it with grief. It crawled up his body. Higher and higher until it reached his eyes and blurred his vision. He saw nothing but injustice and evil no matter where he looked. His own reflection disgusted him by far the most. How dare his cheeks be rosy with life and his chest beat with every breath of air he took.
He slowly undressed in the dim candle light and mindlessly put on his sleeping gown. He could have washed his face but there was no use in doing so for him. On one hand he was far too exhausted and occupied by other things to care for himself. On the other hand, probably unbeknownst to him, he refused to take care of himself as a form of punishment. He didn’t deserve to be taken care of, not even by himself when he hadn’t taken care of them. His physical appearance was to be as soiled as his soul. Everyone looking at him should know that he was a filthy traitor. He would run around dirty for the rest of his life if it meant repenting even a fraction of the sin he committed.
Through all his self inflicted pain and unavoidable grief he made an attempt to be rational and laid down in bed.
His sword, which used to belong to his older brother initially, and his armour were waiting by the foot of his bed, ready to be worn and used for revenge.
Edmund laid in his bed tossing and turning trying to shake off all these memories and thoughts of guilt. Even once he fell asleep he was moaning and twitching uneasily in his sleep.
Althea pressed his ear to the wall of his chamber that shared a wall with the King’s room. He listened intently to all the sounds Edmund made regardless if they were conscious or not. Secretly he hoped that Edmund would call out to him. Not as a King looking for his advisor while making rational decisions, but as a friend, perhaps a lover, looking for a shoulder to cry on, searching for a safe space to be vulnerable in. He was grateful to be so close to Edmund throughout all this time, but even with his held back discrete demeanour he could not deny that he was secretly lusting for the King. He had breached Edmund's privacy many times. Sneaking into his Chamber during bath time just to catch a glimpse of his beautiful porcelain skin, glistening in the water of the bath. He would relish in the sight of Edmunds dark hair clinging to his forehead and he counted the freckles on his lovely rosy cheeks.
Althea would take himself in hand and imagine those strong arms grabbing him and pushing him against the nearest wall. He imagined those plush lips hungrily devouring his and these hard abs to press against his slender frame. He would come thinking of deep brown eyes, pale skin, strong muscles and a large cock inside of him.
Afterwards he would feel soiled yet satisfied, he would retreat into his Chamber and go on as normal while Edmund was none the wiser.
A dirty part of him was glad they died. It made him the one closest to Edmund and gave him an opportunity to develop their relationship. He was aware that his desires were selfish but he wished so dearly that in his desperation and pain Edmund would turn to Althea in search of love. And Althea would give it to him willingly. He was ready to give up his body and soul for even the slightest touch of the King.
Edmund was aware of Althea's sexuality, in fact he was an active defender of Althea in front of everyone who thought to criticise who Althea chose to love. However he wasn't aware that Althea only really cared for one, Edmund himself. Edmund had never even suspected it, perhaps it was a lack of self-esteem or perhaps he thought their deep-rooted relationship was based on strictly platonic feelings. Either way the king never entertained the idea of being Althea’s object of desire.
Althea had no intention of correcting him. As much as Althea longed for his touch and craved his affection he would not dare risk their good bond. Even if it left him heartbroken he would rather moan into his pillow in the dead of night then potentially lose his king forever.

Full disclosure I’m not on my meds so everything is going to incite a huge emotional reaction from me but THE ACOLYTE BEING CANCELLED MAKES ME SO SAD 😭😭😭 
I keep thinking about Leslye Headland and how adorable and excited she was. I keep thinking of this dorky teenage Star Wars fan obsessed with the High Republic books and now she gets to bring that to life on TV. I want the world for her, it makes me so sad that it’s cancelled. I’m talking sell my soul, become a tech billionaire so I can buy a film studio where she can make all the gay star wars fan-fiction she wants. 
I think the reason it upsets me so much is because the cancellation is a result of fan negativity and review bombing, and that sucks because she’s a super-fan, she’s one of us. I think of queer closeted Leslye Headland writing Star Wars fanfic in secret notebooks at school, I think of Amandla Stenberg turning up to The Acolyte panel in Padme cosplay because thats her fave character, Manny Jacinto yelling ‘We’re doing Star Wars baby’ on set to remind himself this isn’t all a dream, Dave Filloni almost putting the phone down on LucasFilm and losing the job of a lifetime because he thought someone was playing a cruel prank on him, Pedro Pascal being so excited to play some random one off character not realising he was about to become Mr Star Wars himself, Ashley Eckstein creating a fashion line for female Star Wars fans because she wanted more options as a fan herself, Gwendoline Christie being distraught when she found out her agent turned down the audition for Phasma and ordering her to call them back, Athena Portillo driving around with her personalised Star Wars license plate not realising it would get her a job working on the very franchise she loved, the cast of Skeleton Crew being the sweetest giddiest giggliest gang of kids, Jon Favreau running up to George Lucas to show him designs like a child eager to show off his latest drawing, Josh Brener writing to JJ Abrams to try and get a Neeku cameo in Rise of the Skywalker, Diageo Luna talking passionately about ‘Little Arthur’, Steve Blum tweeting about his favourite ship, Ray Park doing all he can to be Maul in any stunt scene, San Witwer doing all he can to be Maul, period. I think of these and I see myself in all of them. 
I love Star Wars, I love Star Wars fans, and I love it when Star Wars fans get to make the content they want to see. These super-fans have put the work in to finally be able to make their dreams come true and it breaks my heart to see other ‘fans’ tear them down 😢

Oh. My. God. This last episode was SO GOOD! If Disney doesn't renew I give up on this franchise, I swear. At last some really fresh ideas about the Jedi! (Sorry but The Last Jedi was never as new and controversial as its fanbase claims it was: the consensus at the end was the same as usual: Jedi good, Dark siders bad, no complexity whatsoever!)
Most of what I expected happened 🤩 spoilers episode 8 below.
I wanted Koril (Osha and Mae's other mother) to be the Stranger's former master, but it seemed more likely that it would be Jedi Master Vernestra. And he's TERRIFIED of her?! My man had no problems facing a crowd of armed Jedi alone in episode 5, but as soon as she arrived he put on his helmet back and went hiding like a little child afraid of being punished hard 😳 I can't forget that the scar he had was in his BACK.... Meaning she thought she killed him by attacking him from behind. Not very Jedi, not at all....
Of course we could think he betrayed her, but considering his stance on loyalty, I find it hard to believe. Loyalty is very important to him, we saw it at the way he reacted to Mae's betrayal. And now we know that whatever happened, Vernestra probably lied about it.
Because yes she's a freaking liar! Instead of admitting that her former padawan is still alive and taking pupils, she puts all the blame on this poor Sol. I guess it's karma because that's exactly what he did with Mae. How not agreeing with this senator, who pointed that leaving too much liberty to the Jedi could be dangerous? How do you trust people who lie every time they need to cover their track? Nice foreshadowing of Anakin's betrayal, too... Yes sir, one day a Jedi will go rogue and destroy everything.
Osha thought she saw Mae kill Sol, but she saw herself in fact... she just probably didn't believe it could be her! Neither did Qimir. If he wasn't in love before, he's already naming the babies as we think lmao Poor Sol though, I'll miss him. I suspected it would happen, but still... It was painful to watch, almost as much as seeing Ben Solo kill Han in The Force Awakens. Mae losing her memories of Osha was such a heart wrenching moment. Especially when Mae couldn't finish the song... 😭 in my predictions I saw Mae turn, but I didn't see *that* coming.... Reminds me of Revan! The Stranger agrees to let her go while he was obsessed with killing her, just because Osha asked him to.... That's love 😍
And they really had Osha and Qimir riding together in the sunset. They really did it!! After all this time spent trying to ship Reylo but never really getting it because these idiots just kept fighting with no conversation, my soul is healed at last... You know, the scene where they take the ship and argue like an old couple? I wanted a scene like that for episode IX. Or anything that would have been a scene together with no fighting 😔

How Interview with the Vampire Got Racebending (Mostly) Right - Princess Weekes
Princess’ other video on Confederate Vampires is a tour de force. NGL I thought this Racebending video was ok, even though I wish she’d’ve spent more time going more in depth, cuz I’m a greedy ungrateful wench who loves long-form content, sue me.
The 1st half of the video is the 20 minute background of Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles franchise: how AR created Louis as a representation of herself, grieving for her daughter, and her reactions to the adaptations of 1994 IWTV & 2001 QotD--both of which AR had A LOT of issues with.

Louis’ Softness & Sacrifices
I love what Princess said about Louis’ inherent softness, and how society (his family, business contacts, Lestat, etc) forced him to toughen up in ways unnatural to his true nature, not wanting to hurt or mistreat anyone.

“Louis has to harden himself toughen himself up in order to present himself to the world. It translates really well to his anxieties about being a vampire. He is genuinely a soft man, and it's like, you know, don't be a hard rock when you really are a gem. But that is who Louis is. He tries so hard to be strong for his family, to be a provide--to be sort of like the black strong male provider character, but at the expense of his own soul. So, he is someone who's already felt for a long time that he had to sacrifice himself to do things, and so the vampirism add to that: How much more is he expected to give? How much can he sacrifice, before he no longer understands the shape of his own heart?" (23:19 - 3:00)
I just thought that was so beautifully put. That sat with me for a WHILE.
The Dark GIFT

This is why I get mad when antis take Louis’ self-castigation far too seriously, eager to see him in bad faith and accept all the negative things he says about himself as gospel, while not realizing that Louis’ view of himself is rooted in self-loathing & self-hatred. Cuz EXACTLY, Louis DID see vampirism as a gift! That’s why he accepted it in the first place. 
He saw the “barbarism“ of Lestat slaughtering those priests, and kissed that man with their blood still on his mouth. Cuz he saw the ways that vampirism could benefit men like him rather than relying on the goodwill of racist white men to give him a foot through the door--the same way it could benefit Claudia, by healing her rather than relying on a hospital to treat her severe burns. That’s the whole point of Faustian deals with the Devil: sacrificing your soul for power. It’s not about pimp!Louis seeing women as commodities; it’s about the selfish opportunism & ego that allows capitalists AND vampires (male or female) to exploit ANYONE for their own personal benefit.

Despite the fact that Lestat & Claudia DIDN’T ask/want to be vampires, they still were willing to pass their curse of eternal damnation onto others, just cuz they didn’t want to suffer from vampire loneliness. They KNOW it wasn’t a gift for them, but they try to make the most of their living hell by focusing on love & found family. And Louis knew this, too, desperate to find another Paul in Claudia (”my daughter, sister, throw pillow when HE wouldn’t look at me kindly.”).
The Great Laws: Hypocritical Vampiric Sentimentality & Humanity
“Is there something about being a vampire that blurs the lines of what it means to actually have sentimental attachment if you are seeing other people who you used to look at like food? At a certain point you dehumanize ALL of them! Why else would they have those rules? Why else would it be allowed to kill another vampire, if it wasn't for the fact that, to be an immoral immortal creature means that you don't value life!... You don't value life, but then you also want to have companionship, because you have that humanity in you. How do you balance all that kind of stuff out? That is the thing that is interesting," (33:04 - 33:39). “What does it say 35:08 about the human capacity to harm what you love?" (35:08)
FAAAAAACTS. She ATE (no pun intended) with that part. This is what I mean about those stupid Great Laws--it makes NO sense to believe the Trial script in the Ep4 revisit, as if Lestat GAF about the Great Laws & what Claudia would be like if she was Turned, when even BOOK Lestat DGAF about what would happen to her, and ESPECIALLY not about obeying anyone’s laws.

Like, yes, Claudia is older mentally as we go through these seasons. But as my friend Maven/Lisa said in our longer interview on Nebula, that little girl trapped in a tiny body doesn't really come out in season 2 until she's forced to perform the show over and over again. We saw her in that first season chopping up bodies, really dealing with this kind of way of which the the dysmorphia of her body is never going to match up [with] how she sees herself. And while that does happen, I think it happens a little bit, focused towards the end,” (26:00 - 26:50).
Full disclosure: I can’t stand Maven of the Eventide’s takes on AMC IWTV. I lost total patience with her in S1, when it became clear that she’s a book purist who refused to see/understand what the show was doing. So I was already like Oh brother, here we go. 🙄😒
Claudia is not meant to be that little girl in S2--she disappears in all the way back 1x5.
“...in her own family her entire relationship with Louis is adultification, because in the end she has to become the parent in order to get him to leave a toxic relationship,” (25:30 - 25:42).
THIS is the most important part, but Princess immediately cuts away from it, when this is actually the crux of the matter: Claudia’s NOT a little girl anymore. Even after what happened with Bruce, she still came back home, and during the 1x5 fight we hear her screaming for her “Daddy Lou.” But in 1x6, after she’s forced to take on the motherly role when Lestat crippled Louis, and she had to be the one HE hid behind to answer the door & catch the goats & such, she was officially a woman who refused to be a child for EITHER of them anymore.

In 1x6 Claudia becomes the head of the household, and it pisses alpha patriarch Lestat OFFFFFFFFF (”the lambs herd the beauceron”). In 1x7 she takes charge of the Murder Plot, as a stone cold tactician who never cracks a smile--that bubbly giggling girl from 1x4 is GONE; she’s been simmering with rage ever since Lestat attacked her & Louis. And in 2x1 she takes charge of their entire European itinerary, cuz she’s ALWAYS been the smartest one in their family.

So yeah, it’s typical that Maven’s complaints about wanting to see child!Claudia are a holdovers from book purists who also chafe at AMC’s changes.

Cuz yes: it’s “forced.” Claudia’s “childlike wonder” that Armand wanted to MONETARILY pimp & exploit--WHY does this fandom always focus on the low-hanging fruit of pimp!Louis exploiting Claudia, but NEVER maitre!Armand???--wasn’t childlike at all, it was her naive hope that she’d finally found kinship & community with the coven, which made her happy again--the smiling girl is back when she thinks Daciana will accept her, and it’s finally back ”for the first time in Paris” when she watches the Theatre. But it’s gone again once she realizes “Eff these vampires;“ she only starts smiling again with MADELEINE.
(On the subject of Madeleine, I DO agree with Princess that having a French White Nazi collaborator be Black!Claudia’s companion effing sucks. Like...no, that’s an L, AMC. I wish to God that Madz had been a Jew who was persecuted by the Parisians instead; cuz ain’t no way you finna have me LIKE this change.)

Vampiric Glitz & Glamor in S2

“I have seen some complaints that in this more grounded and racially realized story that we miss out on the glitz and glamour of the vampires traveling like in the books. And I do understand that this element of wish fulfillment would have been fun because we have normalized the idea of vampires being rich and therefore having all this economic distance on a personal level. I do really like seeing vampires having to navigate the realities of traveling while different, while not being privileged.... I do love seeing a story about vampires who had to deal with being immortal while also broke, and having been marginalized in their past, and that marginalization making them scrappy as a result. So I do understand that, but I do think it would have been nice for the show to have a better balance between them struggling through World War II and being able to have a more decadent lifestyle. I think it's possible to have both wish fulfillment and also discuss race,“ (27:11 - 28:14). “Are there elements of the tragedies of their race that I feel could have been changed? Absolutely! I would not be unhappy if they were able to just have ultimate glitz and glamour, and still have the same fate. I think that would have been better, honestly. I think that you can have them deal with racism & microaggression, and then have a bunch of money and be fabulous in Paris," (36:51 - 37:10).
I’m sorry, but no. I have a whole tirade specifically about Louis & Claudia’s financial situation in the book vs the show, that stresses the ways AMC BRILLIANTLY highlights how vampirism does NOT afford black!Claudia (& Louis) the same privileges that it does for their white counterparts. Carol Cutshall specifically talked about how they did NOT want Louis & Claudia living glamorously in Europe.

It’s intentional, grounding Black vampires in the reality of having to navigate the a post-war world as people with Black skin. 
I’ve seen this same bogus complaint from (white) people mad that AMC only showed war-torn Romania in 2x1, as if Louis & Claudia would’ve EVER been able to walk around Romanian palaces & mansions, when their BLACK arses weren’t even allowed to walk around the SLUMS without Nazis & Soviets throwing their papers in the effing mud, until Emilia vouched for them (a white woman, as Black people OFTEN needed to do during segregation. It’s also a callback to free Black people during slavery, who had walk through white spaces with their freedom papers, lest white people assumed they were runaway slaves & resold them. And Claudia OFTEN framed their escape from NOLA & Massa Lestat’s oppression as them being “slaves” she had freed.)

Cuz I’m very confused: we DO get the glitz and glamour of rich vampires...IN DUBAI. Loumand’s living in a multi-million dollar penthouse in one of the most insanely expensive cities on the planet, giving Daniel 7-course meals of “endangered species,” waited on hand & foot by a whole team of servants & listening to Classical music so loud Daniel tells them to shut it off. They’re selling modern art to the highest bidder, and their bedroom has a bunch of priceless Mughal-era antiquities. When Lou FINALLY leaves Dubai, he’s driven into NOLA in a Cadillac Escalade, flashing his Black Amex card at the Pontchartrain. 
These viewers just miss the Art Nouveau maximalism of NOLA, over the modern minimalism of Dubai (even though Louis’ FAR richer in Dubai than he was in NOLA). Meanwhile forgetting that Louis only has access to massive wealth in NOLA specifically BECAUSE of his access to Lestat (the white man who funded the Azalea), whose generational wealth from Magnus juxtaposes the dwindling LDPL fortune that pushed Louis to become a pimp in the first place???? As for being glitzy & glamorous, this is post-war Paris 1945-49--WHAT glitz? WHAT glam?!

The rich people in 1940s Paris were corrupt AF black marketers who were hoarding all the food & resources after the war--as foreign BLACK outsiders who BARELY spoke French and had ZERO politico-economic pull, how the heck would Louis & Claudia have manged to rub shoulders with any of them????  And why would humanist!Louis have wanted to, when he was busy trying to connect with regular people’s struggles through his photography? (Granted: the ONE place I could see glitzy glamorous Paris is if AMC had been able to add the scenes Jacob wanted at R:26, so we could see Josephine Baker perform, and see the artistic circles.) Carol Cutshall said Lou wants to mimic the COMMON MAN, not the elite.

Like, what do y'all REALLY want? To see a period drama reflect people’s experiences realistically, or do you just want the fantasy of Netflix treatments of white characters acted by Black people, who’re allowed to walk through the world of the white elite with no consideration of historical accuracy, a la Bridgerton? 🙄😒
Princess points out something important here:
“When it comes to race bending I feel like the disappointments I've had for most shows is that it feels as if when the character becomes non-white, tenderness is lost, care is lost, sensitivity is lost. I remember reading the Sookie Stackhouse books and being like: not only is Tara white, but Tara is happy! And in the show, Tara is the antithesis of joy! She's always suffering, always unhappy, always miserable, always being abused. Why was her becoming Black synonymous with her having a miserable existence?" (35:14 - 35:44).
The difference with AMC!Claudia and HBO!Tara is that Tara, despite also living in Louisiana, does NOT live during Jim Crow. AMC was making a point about the ways that Black people were disenfranchized during an openly racist period in 19teens-1940s history--“our life is sh!t, it’s been sh!t, it’s gon’ be sh!t again”--from Claudia growing up poor in Storyville (the seediest part of NOLA where most Black folk were poor), to becoming a vampire who’s now doubly an outcast cuz she’s undead, then triply suffers cuz she’s a kid with this weak-willed Black father whose head is constantly up their white Maker’s arse. It’s about holding on to that (naive) hope that the damned can “make the most of it“ in their cursed lives as the undead, and that found family & companionship can make immortality bearable (“you and me”), when Vampire Loneliness gets so bad that they “want to curl up and die“ and “taste the fire.” Claudia’s life is MEANT to be tragic, white or Black; but AMC’s whole point was that during Jim Crow, Black vampires didn’t have it as easy as white ones. And in post-war Europe, the brightest spot they find is the Theatre where they find vampires even WORSE than everyone in America--ironically, Lestat was right.
HBO!Tara on the other hand, doesn’t suffer for any logical in-lore purpose or larger message about Southern racism--other than the obvious. HBO was even gonna kill off Lafayette in S1--but the fans protested cuz he’s iconic. So instead they killed off Miss Jeanette (the Black voodoo priestess/snake oil saleswoman).

Bruce & non-canon brutalization

“Of all the choices that they've made in the show in terms of adaptation, the two that I'm still kind of wrestling with is Bruce and the domestic violence. I really don't feel like Claudia being tortured and assaulted is necessary for her character. I remember rewatching that episode, and I still don't think it's necessary. I don't think it's necessary for Bruce to exist. I think that storyline for Claudia is very weird; I don't think it adds anything. I don't really think Rape As Backstory makes any sense, and I think that it takes away from the ultimate issue of her just wanting to leave Lestat. I don't think that she needs to be in a situation where she is brutalized and broken, and then comes back. And then because it's also the fight happening and Lestat and Louis--Louis being bruised and broken. I feel like I don't want the fact that it's a Gothic drama--the fact that they are, you know, vampires--for it to be an excuse to see them be unnecessarily brutalized, when it's not something that happens to the source material,“ (30:52 - 31:50).
I also heavy disagree with this stance, specifically because Bruce is a deliberate parallel with none other than Lestat. I’ve argued this over & over (x x x x), how Bruce (aka Killer) and Matador!Lestat are two antagonists who show you precisely how teenaged girl Claudia & adult man Louis are put on the same level; our two Black vampires given similar treatment at the hands of white vampires they thought they could trust.

I want either Akasha or Lestat to kill Bruce in S3. Cuz either it’ll be Akasha making a point (to Les) about what happens to rapists & misogynists; or it’ll be Lestat guiltily/belatedly tryna “do right” by Claudia long after she’s dead, only for her ghost haunting him to laugh in his face, too little too late.
And as for the point about characters being brutalized, I’ve also spoken on this before wrt race, cuz this whole show’s about how our 2 Black characters are brutalized with no justice and no peace.

I don’t get when people say this, cuz on one hand Omg vampires are monsters, Lestat punched a hole in a priest’s head in a church. But on the other hand it’s Omg how could AMC not put trigger warnings on Ep5 cuz DV/SA is triggering, (even though they didn’t even show ANY of the SA on screen, or even show us Claudia’s broken leg); but the gratuitous murder & violence & torture we see in S1 AND S2 wasn’t TW’d either--e.g.: Armand dishragging human!Daniel in 2x5, which HE never does in the books, either. But they’ll ship the absolute HELL out of DM, when the show hasn’t even indicated they’ll make DM romantic!?
So wrt to Lestat’s depiction in this show, IMO people really take umbrage with anything that makes shipping Loustat less fun and makes this white man look like a monstrous a-hole. They hide behind book canon, inconsistent AF. Cuz AMC!Lestat often acts totally opposite his book counterpart--who cries when he kills people & staunchly only wants to hunt Evil Doers cuz he wanted to be a priest & falls in love with EVERY human he meets, regardless of if they’re musicians or not. AMC!Lestat calls humans “The Meat” constantly, and he & Claudia call human blood “Kill Juice” and treat hunting like a sadistic game (”you must be most ferocious”). Lestat is a monster who has ZERO regard for ALL human life, yet (racist) antis love to point the finger at pimp!Louis & lie about him having no regard for women?? Like??? Even in the S3 promo we see Lestat having killed frikkin crew members in the documentary--are THEY Evil Doers?

(But you best believe AMC’s gonna glamorize every single second of his Rockstar Era, even while he’s sitting in a puddle of blood tears crying about how hard his human life was and how the IWTV book slandered him--just feeding the fires of Black people’s voices being seen as less credible than white people’s--even though Louis & ESPECIALLY Claudia never knew a effing thing about Lestat cuz HE chose to never divulge details about his personal life. And NO, I don’t mean the stuff about TWMBK Marius told him to STFU about. He didn’t tell them anything about Gabrielle, they barely knew anything about Nicki, and knew nothing about Armand.)
So yeah, I largely agree with Princess Weekes that overall AMC did a great job by writing color conscious Black characters. Our takes just diverge when it comes to considering the historical reality of Black experiences during Jim Crow, that WEREN’T glitzy & glamorous, but that AMC isn’t necessarily giving trauma porn to torture Black characters for no reason, either. 
I think a bigger issue with the racebending is its reception; about how AMC’s mishandled race in the press and fandom: wrt silencing interviews with the actors about race; and platforming the most problematic AF non-Black fans, while not speaking out against the racist AF takes in the fandom about the Bipoc main characters.

Never understood the hate towards Yui. Again the anime is a promo for the game and it did not do her character justice at all. The prequel and sequels for some of the mangas did her character justice. She’s a very kind and compassionate person, she’s HUMAN and grew up in a church, she’s a soft girl who doesn’t like violence so y’all can only imagine what this girl has to go thru meeting a bunch of bloody thirsty horny vampire boys, who have severe parental issues and a bunch of other abusive behavioral problems, but she is very patient with each and every brother in all the routes and I love that about her, she’d be a really good therapist too lmao. She’s an Angel, must be protected at all times. I won’t tolerate any Yui hate on this blog.

Poster boy for the entire franchise. A lot of people find him to be annoying, he is annoying and we love his Aries self for that. While Ayato is a menace to society he’s got a good side to him as well and for the most part knows right from wrong, more than some of the fandom gives him credit for. I also really like his character design, he kinda looks like a mean little bat. They give him a lot of cute and playful moments with Yui and I think that’s beautiful especially in a dark themed game series, they have serious moments but also a lot of light hearted moments and I think that���s important to lighten up the mood sometimes.

First off, I absolutely love his character design, the messy long hair and he’s a giant too plus they gave him realistic human hair and eyes to show that he used to be human, maybe I’m thinking too deep on it idk. I absolutely love the identity crisis he had due to his amnesia and the connection with Shu, it brought that twin flame connection back, I love those best friend tropes a lot, his voice actor also is Mako from Free! So I have no choice but to Stan Yuma. Yuma also has a lot more self awareness then the rest of his adoptive brothers and thinks ahead due to his past experiences, he knows that he’s a vampire now but still has a garden for food and has sugar cubes with him at all times, he uses his past experiences and acknowledges that it happened then moves forward he doesn’t dwell on it too much.

He’s a lil creepy, and socially awkward at times but he’s just so relatable sometimes. He’s very soft spoken and he a lil wild with his pain tolerance and some of the out of pocket shit that he says, but I think he’s such a sweetheart, protect him at all costs as well, even his brothers know to protect him at all costs.

Shu will forever be my favorite DL boy, he doesn’t like doing anything but can do everything and do it perfectly too. He has severe ptsd, depression, and detachment issues. No you can’t fix him even Yui realizes this and just accepts him for who he is because that’s the only way it’ll work. He’s also hilarious without even trying to be, he says some mean shit at times but it’s so unhinged like damn Shu you don’t have the energy to eat, shower, wipe your ass but you got the energy to completely disrespect all your siblings with a few words. Also his beef with Reiji is somewhat familiar grounds especially if you have a sibling that is constantly irritating your soul. I always felt like I could relate to Shu the most due to him having a hard time getting close to people after losing his best friend, he can’t just get over it either, I don’t like when people would say “oh it happened a long time ago” yes it did but everyone heals at their own pace and it’s important to acknowledge that as well.

Amazon Prime Video has announced that it is producing a six-episode live-action series based on SEGA / Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's Like a Dragon (titled Ryū ga Gotoku in Japan and initially titled Yakuza in the West) game series titled Like a Dragon: Yakuza (Ryū ga Gotoku ~Beyond the Game~ in Japan). The episodes will debut on Amazon Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories in two batches on October 25, 2024 and November 1, 2024.

The series is a live-action adaptation with an original story based on SEGA’s global hit game franchise, Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Directed by the critically acclaimed Masaharu Take, the series will feature Ryoma Takeuchi as the lead character, Kazuma Kiryu. Like a Dragon: Yakuza is the latest addition to the Prime membership. Prime members in Japan enjoy savings, convenience, and entertainment, all in a single membership.
Released in 2005 by SEGA, the Yakuza game series was positioned as an entertaining game for adults, which found massive fanfare amongst its target audience. The series depicts the lives of fierce yet passionate gangsters and people living in a huge entertainment district, Kamurocho, a fictional district modeled after the violent Shinjuku ward’s Kabukichō, that acts as the backdrop of the gameplay. Like a Dragon: Yakuza showcases modern Japan and the dramatic stories of these intense characters, such as the legendary Kazuma Kiryu, that games in the past have not been able to explore. The much-loved game has captured the attention and hearts of fans not only in Japan but also internationally and will now be adapted, developed, and streamed worldwide on Prime Video.
In 1995 and 2005, spanning across two time-periods, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, an original crime-suspense-action series, follows the life, childhood friends, and repercussions of the decisions of Kazuma Kiryu, a fearsome and peerless Yakuza warrior with a strong sense of justice, duty, and humanity.
