How I'm starting to believe in Greek gods
I just wanted to share my story, including some doubts because I'm not sure about some things. I have never been a really religious person, as growing up in a very religious family, i think even having some connection to Christianity when it comes to a town near where I live.
Anyways, as I was saying, I have never been that much about beliefs, always wondering about what else could be out there waiting for me.
After all, my family said that the most important part of being human is worshipping a greater deity, specially god; I decided to try to take that in mind while searching for a religion where I could feel kind of comfortable.
Despite the taboo that it is, i started with Satanism, my reason behind it being "I'm not comfortable in what surrounds me, maybe if I try the opposite...?".
I moved on to try atheism, it didn't feel right, something was missing.
Then I tried believing in Greek gods, this being the reason because of a famous musical based on The Odyssey.
I don't know why, but this one really felt like it called me, something in Greek gods drew my attention and respect.
I tried then making my first prayer, being it to Poseidon, I still don't know if I did it right or if I chose the wrong god to start, but my ask was for clear skies on the weekend in exchange of being able to make it rain as hard as he wanted on my 18th birthday, the reason for the ask was that there was going to be a camp; in the end, the camp was moved to next week, but it did rain in my birthday and the weekend was clear skies.
I am a little ashamed of this but I ended up asking again 2 times, this time to Zeus too, as the camp was moved to another date 3 times, this time i tried my best to not be disrespectful and I promised I'd try to make something in return.
The day of the camp, I made a quick prayer to Gaea, asking for a safe travel and general safety during said camp.
As soon as I got back to school, I got cherry incense, I am still new to this and today I lit up one of the incenses.
I was going to try Aztec gods, but I ended up feeling more comfortable in Greek mythology.
I am willing to make a tiny altar for Gaea, Poseidon and Zeus, As I feel like I still need to make a proper offering to all of them, I would've thought it was coincidence and I know it's not 100% true or reliable, but the weather forecast for those weekends I asked were written with a high probability of heavy rain.
It may have been coincidence, but I like to think it was a way to receive me with open arms in this religion.
Now for the questions:
Do I need to make separate altars for each god? I don't have much space, and I don't know what my family would thing of it if I made an altar they could see, I could fit one in my closet or a tiny table in my room.
What would I do with offerings? specifically food, I cannot leave it to rot, that feels kind of wrong, but eating or throwing it out feels too disrespectful, what is the common practice when it comes to food offerings?
Am I praying correctly? I tend to pray in this way: Treat the gods like I would treat a Teacher I respect a lot, with a lot of respect and trying to not ask for too much.
Is there a guide on what to pray to which god? I just wanna show respect by believing in every Greek god, regardless of if I ask for something or not, I wanna keep doing this.
Thank you so much for reading until the end.

Earthquake Reveals Aztec Snakehead Beneath Mexico City
Researchers are conserving a rare snakehead from the Aztecs that still retains its painted colors from hundreds of years ago.
An earthquake last year revealed a big surprise beneath a law school in modern-day Mexico City: a giant, colorful snakehead from the Aztec Empire.
The snakehead dates back more than 500 years, to when the Aztecs controlled the area, which at the time was part of the flourishing capital of Tenochtitlan. The sculpture was discovered after a magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck Mexico City on Sept. 19, 2022; the seismic event caused damage and changes in the topography, revealing the snakehead beneath a building that was part of a law school at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) said in a Spanish-language statement.
The Aztecs built temples and pyramids and worshipped a number of deities, including Quetzalcoatl, who was often depicted as a snake. However, it's unclear if this sculpture depicts him, the archaeologists said.
The sculpted snake is 5.9 feet (1.8 meters) long, 2.8 feet (0.85 m) wide and 3.3 feet (1 m) high, and it weighs about 1.3 tons (1.2 metric tons), the INAH said. Several colors — including red, blue, black and white — are preserved on the sculpture.
Tumblr media
Color was preserved on about 80% of the sculpture's surface. To keep it preserved, an INAH team lifted the snakehead out of the ground with a crane and constructed a humidity chamber around the sculpture. This chamber allows the sculpture to lose humidity gradually, with its color being preserved, María Barajas Rocha, a conservationist with the INAH who worked extensively on the sculpture, said in the statement.
While other snakehead sculptures have been found at Tenochtitlan, this one is particularly important for its preserved colors, said Erika Robles Cortés, an archaeologist with the INAH.
Tumblr media
"Thanks to the context in which this piece was discovered, but above all, thanks to the stupendous intervention of the restorers-conservators led by Maria Barajas, it has been possible to stabilize the colors for its preservation in almost all the sculpture, which is extremely important, because the colors have helped us to conceive pre-Hispanic art from another perspective," Robles Cortés told Live Science in an email.
The sculpture's "sheer size is impressive, as well as its artistry," but the survival of the colors is remarkable, said Frances Berdan, a professor emeritus of anthropology at California State University, San Bernardino who was not involved with the excavation. "The survival of black, white, red, yellow, and blue paints is particularly interesting — one gains a good image of the visual impact of such sculptures as they were arrayed about the city center," Berdan said in an email.
Tumblr media
In addition to its preserved colors, the snakehead's size is notable, said Bertrand Lobjois, an associate professor of humanities at the University of Monterrey in Mexico who is not involved in the excavation. The "first time I saw this serpent head, I was dazzled by its dimensions," he said in an email.
Lobjois also praised the conservation work that allowed the colors to survive, noting that "the conservation process allows us to appreciate the naturalistic approach of figuration" the Aztec artists used.
This work is ongoing and will continue at the site into next year.

“That’s what you’re wearing?”
It’s the first thing Kara says when she opens the door. Her eyes go wide and her brows shoot up– an involuntary response to the sight in front of her. And immediately, Lena retracts. She smiles, the way she always does when uncomfortable, and lifts her hands in defense.
“Shoot– I’m sorry, I don’t mean it like that,” Kara stammers.  “You look great– I mean, you always look great, really! I- I don’t know why I said that. Like– you could step on me, and I’d probably thank you.”
She doesn’t know why that last bit slips out either. But it does. And for a solid five seconds, she freezes, beet-faced as she stares at Lena, who stares back, with brows raised so high her forehead creases to accommodate them.
“I am… so sorry for that,” Kara murmurs after what feels like an eternity.
She steps aside so her friend can enter the apartment and awkwardly adjusts her glasses, mentally kicking herself for, well, everything.
Because really, Lena doesn’t look bad. If anything, it’s the opposite. In a black button-down and plaid dress pants, Lena remains the most stunning woman Kara has ever seen. For embarrassing as they all were, not a word of Kara’s ramblings had been dishonest.
“I just…” Kara shuts the door and fidgets uncomfortably as she approaches Lena. “It’s like a million degrees out, are you gonna be comfortable?”
“I just came from work,” Lena responds. Her voice is flat, her posture stiff.
“I- I know,” Kara says. “You do look very good.”
Lena smiles. “Thank you.”
She sucks in a breath and glances down at herself. She’d had a feeling this wasn’t the most appropriate attire. Kara had invited her to a baseball game at Aztec Stadium- not to a dinner party or board room. Now that she sees herself next to Kara, she does feel pretty ridiculous.
“Could I…” Lena sucks in a breath. “Do you have something I could borrow?”
“Oh– yeah, of course. Come with me!”
They spend the next fifteen minutes in Kara’s bedroom, Lena perched on the edge of the bed while Kara digs through her closet.
“I can’t wait to get nachos,” she says. “I know technically liquid cheese is kind of disgusting. But I feel like the rules don’t really apply at baseball games.”
Lena hums and nods.
“I’ve actually never been to one,” she says.
Kara turns around, holding a few hangers and pairs of pants.
“Any kind of sports, thing, really. Unless you count high school fencing.” Lena laughs as she says it. “But, I was the one doing the fencing.”
“You fenced?”
“Yeah. For about three years.”
Kara pauses and folds the clothes over her arm.
“Why’d you stop?”
Lena shrugs. “I guess I got bored.”
“You got bored sword fighting?”
“Yeah, well…” Lena gives a teasing smile and raises an eyebrow. She’s going to make a remark about how she is a Luthor and after a while, the weaponry in fencing begins to feel a bit juvenile. But she keeps it in, unsure of how a joke like that will land.
Thankfully, Kara doesn’t seem to notice the hesitation. She stays in the swing of things and holds up two pieces from her pile– a maroon tank top and jeans.
“What about this?” She asks.
“I don’t know…” Lena stretches out the words.
She tilts her head and scrunches up her nose as she says it. Kara can pull the look off. She’s nothing if not beautiful in her National City Warriors t-shirt and ripped denim shorts. But with her, it’s different. Because Kara’s muscular and tall. She’s got a sunshine smile and the softest golden waves. And as goofy as she may be, with her baseball cap and fanny pack slung across her body, she’s still her. She’s still perfect.
“Don’t you think I’ll look silly?”
“No, I think you’ll look cute,” Kara answers without an ounce of hesitation. “But it’s up to you.”
Lena rises from the bed and steps forward to take the outfit from her friend. She wants to ask if Kara has another one of those big tees but the words escape her.
“Okay,” she says after a moment. “I’ll try it.”
She strips and changes in front of her (with Kara, it’s never felt strange) while Kara talks to her about everything going on at CatCo. The new intern who Ms. Grant brought to tears on her first day (she brought her a mocha instead of a white mocha) and the techie who was fired for trying to steal one of the company tablets.
“Lena!” Kara exclaims when she’s done.
“What?”
Instinctive arms wrap themselves around Lena’s abdomen. She’s so exposed in this. Her stomach protrudes over the waistline of the jeans and the unfaded stretch marks she normally covers with concealer are visible. She’s too casual, she’s too sloppy, too–
“You look so good!”
Kara claps her hands together. She’s smiling so bright her eyes get all squinty and dimples appear on either side of her mouth.
“Wait- can I do something? Can I touch your hair?” She asks.
Kara's s so happy Lena can’t help but oblige. She nods and smiles, letting her friend come over to her and carefully take the bobby pins out of her bun. She moves slowly with hands so gentle. It’s a welcome break from the nights when Lena gets home and rips them out fast enough that they take clumps of hair with them.
“You look so nice,” Kara softly reiterates as she removes the first hair tie. “I don’t know what it is but you just… you feel so human, I guess.”
The bun collapses into a ponytail and Kara carefully pulls out the second hair tie. She rakes smooth fingers through Lena’s hair, pulling it all back behind her shoulders.
“Human?” Lena chuckles.
“Yeah… I guess I’ve never really seen you outside of your work clothes. You’re always so put together but you just– I mean, you’re always beautiful. And now…” Kara hesitates. She needs something to do with her hands, so she goes back to combing out Lena’s hair. She can feel her face filling with heat, thankful Lena’s back is to her. “You feel less… less far away. Like, you’re less of an entity and more…”
Lena turns around. Her expression is relaxed, save the knit in her brow, like she finally released the breath she’d been hanging onto.
For a moment, she waits, clinging to Kara’s every last word, needing to know where she’ll land. But Kara falls quiet. She’s too focused on the inch of space between them. They’re so close she can smell Lena’s warm vanilla lotion and the faint scent of coffee on her breath, see the scab from where she chews her lip, and the freckles under faded foundation.
“You…” She tries again but the word gets caught in her throat.
“Kara?”
“Yeah?”
“Can I…”
Lena takes Kara’s hand in hers, intertwining their fingers as she steps forward and closes the gap between them. When their lips touch, she waits to feel the fireworks. The butterflies in her stomach, fluttering and pouncing with glee. But instead of an explosion that overtakes her, it’s a calm that washes over her body. Warmth that starts where Kara’s body meets hers, radiating all the way down to the tips of her toes.
It feels right. It feels safe.
When she finally pulls away, Kara’s sunshine smile instantly returns.
“You good?” She asks with a laugh, giving Lena’s hand a squeeze.
“Yeah,” Lena says, smiling in a way that causes her nose to get all scrunchy and small. “I’m really good.”

Hey there! I'm a reader from the global south, I was wondering if you've ever been interested in prehispanic gods and beliefs? It's okay if you haven't, I was just curious <3
Yes, as a teenager I was very interested in the Aztec, Maya and Inca civilizations. It was the animated series The Mysterious Cities of Gold that sparked my interest. In gymnasiet (high school?) I actually made my diploma project on the Aztec Empire (despite that I was studying the Arts Programme and could have made an art project instead).
I'd love to learn more about the mythologies from that part of the world. I don't really have any good books on the subject.

Shoving these down your throats
Mumbo: Did you bring Lizzie? Cleo, gesturing to Etho: No, but I brought the next best thing. Mumbo: Etho? The next best thing would be Gem. Etho: I would be offended, but Gem is freakishly strong.
artyn: You're just jealous. All my friends tell me I remind them of Gem. The Squad: *screaming* Skizz: They look like Gem? Are you out of your fucking MIND? Scar: Gem, sweetie, I am SO sorry. I am SO SORRY that an ugly-ass bitch like this would even say that. Oh my god. Skizz: Gem? Gem? Gem? You know who you fucking look like? You fucking look like BigB!
Tango: Hey, how did my phone break? Lizzie: You were drunk yesterday. Tango: And? Skizz: You threw it. Tango: Why? Scott: You turned on airplane mode and kept screaming “FLY DAMN YOU!” Tango: And why didn’t you stop me?! Ren: We were busy laughing our asses off.
Bdubs: Hey, can we stay in your dorm tonight? Mumbo: Why? Bdubs: Impulse fiddled with an ouija board and cursed ours. BigB: Jimmy doesn't know how to banish spirits, so they just throw salt at them and yell "DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A HOTEL TO YOU?!"
Grian: What's the scariest horror movie you've ever watched? Pearl: IT. Scott: Annabelle. Jimmy: Paranormal Activity. Joel: High School Musical. All throughout high school I was scared that everyone was gonna randomly get up and start singing and dancing, and I would be the only one who doesn't know the words.
Etho: You know what? Etho: When I join this friend group I thought you guys would be dealing with my bullshit. *Scott, Skizz and Grian continue screaming about mold water* Etho:Not the other way around. Impulse: I dunno, sounds like you need to drink the mold water.
Impulse: How do I ask someone out? Jimmy: Roses are red, violets are blue, guess what, my bed has room for two. Impulse: No! BigB: Twinkle twinkle little star, we can do it in a car. Impulse: Stop! Joel: Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily I can make you scream. Impulse: I feel like the last one is verging dangerously into serial killer territory.
Martyn: When I see really attractive people like Scar, I just laugh because I know if we lived in the Aztec culture, they'd be sacrificed for their beauty. Jimmy: I mean, that's one way to cope with not being attractive. Impulse: Works for me.
Tango: What's the most efficient way to burn calories? Skizz: Exercise more! Scott: Set yourself on fire. Jimmy: There are two kinds of people.
Bdubs, writing in a letter: "I'm going to kick.. your... ass." Bdubs: THERE. Now send it. Joel: Dude, your handwriting's terrible, are you sure you want to- Bdubs: JUST DO IT! later Etho: So what does it say? Lizzie, reading the letter: They say they're going to "lick my...." Etho: Lizzie: Etho: Gross-
Ren: Why did you kidnap Etho!?!?! Pearl: Ah- um- well- the reason for that is, uhh... Joel: Sometimes, we must work together towards a common goal. Ren: NOT TO KIDNAP PEOPLE!
Tango: Subs are so fun to play with. All you have to do is hint at what you might do, back them into a corner with a look, or grab their wrist in a certain way and they're a wide-eyed mess. Scar: What the fuck kind of Subway are you going to? Ren: Substitute teachers deal with so much shit. Skizz: Guys.
Gem: It’s Christmas! Are you all in a Christmas mood?! Jimmy: Merry crisis. Ren: Jingle bells, jingle bells, single all the way. Scott: Hoe hoe hoe. Gem: Guys, please.
Mumbo: How would you guys deal with a toxic friend? Gem: Tell them how you really feel. Pearl: Slowly distance yourself from them. Lizzie: Engage in a 1v1 sword battle and if they lose they have to stop being toxic or pay the price. Mumbo, being handed a sword: …well heck.
Bdubs, filling out legal paperwork: Were you guys born AMAB or AFAB? Tango: Bold of you to assume I was born at all. Cleo: I personally was created in a lab. Jimmy: I just straight up spawned lol.
Gem: Is the plural of milf/dilf milfs/dilfs or milves/dilves? Impulse: Milfs. Grian: Milf/dilf is an acronym, you can't change the spelling to milves/dilves. Gem: Wait, they're acronyms? What do they stand for??? Tango: Mom in late forties, dad in late fourties. Tango: I learned that from the movie called M.I.L.F that I saw the trailer of in theaters probably 5 to 7 years ago. Grian: Mom/dad I'd Love to Fuck. Gem: WAIT, WHAT THE FUCK— Gem: I NEVER REALIZED IT WAS ACTUALLY HORNY! Tango: Oh, is it not mom in late fouries? Impulse: What? No! It isn't! Tango: THE MOVIE TRAILER LIED TO ME! Grian: Tango... Tango: THIS IS WHY I DIDN'T THINK CALLING PEOPLE MILFS WAS ALL THAT BAD BECAUSE IT STOOD FOR SOMETHING HARMLESS IT JUST HAD A SLIGHTLY SEXUAL CONNOTATION! Grian: I am entirely unsurprised that this is coming from you. Tango: GEM, DOES IT MAKE SENSE WHY I CALLED THE DIARY OF A WIMPY KID MOM A MILF NOW BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS LITERALLY JUST A DESCRIPTOR WITH FUNNY CONNOTATION! Gem: The word milf has been ruined for me. Impulse: THAT'S ITS DEFINITION, IT CAN'T BE RUINED THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS! Grian: Y'all are dumbasses.
Martyn: Why are you smiling? Jimmy: What? I can’t just be happy? Cleo: Ren tripped and fell in the parking lot.
Tango: A stake to the heart won't kill a vampire if their tits are big enough. Ren: Yeah, you just catch it. Impulse: Nah nah nah, deflects it. Stake? Just bounces right off. Done. Back to doing hot girl shit. Scar: Then I just use a spear instead. Tango: You are trying so hard to kill a vampire with big bazongas, and for what? Why would you do that to the ecosystem?
Scott: I have a question. BigB: Shoot. Scott: Is the S or C in scent silent? Martyn: Fuck you, I’m going to be thinking about this all day. BigB: Okay well, cent is pronounced the same way as scent so I’m gonna say the S is silent. Scott: Okay, but sent is also spelled the same way. Martyn: Google says that the C was added in the late seventeenth century, so I guess the S is silent. Lizzie: Plot twist, both the S and the C are silent and the E actually makes the sss sound. Martyn: Lizzie is not allowed to talk anymore.
Skizz: I didn’t know that air fryers are a real thing. Used to think that they were made up by the internet as a funny joke and that their purpose was to “fry air”. Impulse: WAIT, BUT IT FRIES THE AIR TO FRY THE FOOD?? Skizz: I DIDN’T KNOW IT WAS A KITCHEN APPLIANCE, MY FIRST ASSUMPTION WAS SOMETHING AKIN TO AN AIR CONDITIONER! Scott: IT’S NOT LIKE AN AIR CONDITIONER???? Scar: You guys clearly don’t own an air fryer.
*The gang when they drop food on the floor* Etho: Aw man. *Throws it away* Ren: Five second rule! Grian: Foolish germs, thinking they can stop me!? *Eats it off the floor* Tango: *Sobs on the floor*
Tango: I’m gonna die alone. Bdubs: Tango, you’re not gonna die alone. Tango: Jimmy, was my safety net, okay? They got married and now I have to get a snake. Etho: Uh-huh. Why is that? Tango: If I’m gonna be an old lonely person, I’m gonna need a thing, you know? A hook. Like that guy in the subway who eats his own face. Tango: So I figured I’ll be “Crazy Man With A Snake”, you know? Crazy snake man. Tango: Then I’ll get more snakes, call them my babies. Kids won’t walk past my place, they will run! RUN AWAY FROM CRAZY SNAKE MAN!

Fantasy Anime Recommendations
I love all kinds of fantasy, whether it be high fantasy, low fantasy, dark fantasy, or urban fantasy. So here are my recommendations for that genre.
Disclaimer: More will be added to this list as I slowly work through my to-be-watched list
Black Clover
4 seasons and a Canon movie ongoing
My favorite underrated Battle Shonen series is about an orphan boy who dreams of being the wizard King. However, there is a slight problem since he was born without the ability to use magic. This is for you if you like the classic battle Shonen. It takes that classic formula and executes it to perfection. Plus, the show has some of the best-written supporting cast and female characters in Shonen.
Mashle: Magic and Muscles:
2 seasons ongoing
Satirical parody of Harry Potter. Except it's a kid without magic who has to somehow survive at the universe equivalent of Hogwarts without anyone finding out he can't use magic
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
1 season ongoing
It's a beautiful story and one of the best shows I've ever watched. However, it is not for everyone. Some people cannot handle the slow pacing because sometimes it is just as much of a slice of Life as it is an action-adventure story.
Wistoria: Wand and Sword
1 season is ongoing
A kid without magic wants to be a great magician, but to gain that title, he picks up a sword to prove you don't need magic to become the greatest. Unfortunately, he still has to go to magic school. Black Clover mixed with Mashle is just as good as both.
Black Butler
4 seasons, a two-part special, and a Canon movie ongoing.
A young boy and his demon butler solve mysteries in Victorian England. I recommend researching what Canon and non-canon or OVA are before you start. Otherwise, you will be confused.
Dungeon Meshi
One season ongoing
There's a reason this took over Tumblr for months and is still trending
The Case Study of Vanitas
A human doctor for vampires and his vampire companion in Paris. This one was an emotional roller coaster. The fate of season 3 is unknown and it is a shame
Trese
It's a supernatural detective show set in the Philippines, and it's a shame it only got one season
Not anime, but still adult animation
Castlevania
Completed, but there is an ongoing spin-off series
Based on the Japanese game, Netflix did a fantastic job adapting it. I never played the games and I loved it. I rewatched it with someone who played the games, and they loved all the Easter eggs
The sequel Castlevania Nocturne is not as good as the original. Hopefully, they fix that with the second season. The trailer did look amazing
The Legend of Vox Machina
3 seasons ongoing
You like classic high fantasy. This is for you. It's based on the D&D live stream show Critical Role. A friend of mine jokingly calls it Middle Earth. If they were allowed to say fuck it's very adult and very gory. However, it is amazing and one of my favorite animated shows.
Blood of Zeus
2 seasons ongoing
If you like Greek mythology, this one's for you. The story of one of Zeus's bastards and the consequences of Hera finding out about them. It's a story that feels like it could be straight out of Greek mythology and they do a fantastic job
Maya and The Three
One season it's a Netflix exclusive
Think of it as a love story of Mesoamerican culture in animated form. It's probably the most out of my recommendations because it is 3D animation. But God I love this show. It's about an Aztec princess who has to fight the gods in order to save her Kingdom along with her companions, who are members of the Inca, the Maya, and the indigenous Caribbean culture. Again, it's a love story of the indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica made by actual Latinos. I love this show so much, and it is underrated.

MAD SCIENTIST LOVE STORY
They are called Inventors. Those with the Spark possess a special gift: they can create machines and contraptions that bend the very laws of the physical world, performing feats that should by all rights be impossible. But each Inventor also suffers some sort of unique "Spark Madness," and because of this they have a reputation as Mad Scientists; wild and unpredictable. To help young Inventors develop their talents to serve mankind, the International University of Inventors (or IUI) was founded. Each year, new students arrive at the University, ready and eager to hone their special talent. This year sees two such young Inventors: Dillan, an unassuming young man with dreams of world conquest, and Noreen, a girl who views the world through the lens of anime tropes and cliches. Their lives are irrevocably changed when they are both assigned to same Workshop class, and Noreen realizes that Dillan is the sole male student. This could mean only one thing: Noreen is a living in a harem show. But, strangely, nobody is acting like they should. Well, if they won't behave accordingly, then Noreen will just have to pick up the slack. YGO Zexal Keyswap AU (AKA an excuse for me to engage in Aztecshipping) (I only thought this out through the WDC arc and even then there's still gaps-)(thanks to my friend usagi for helping me fill in some of these gaps)
(This is a long infodump, look out-)
-While looking for the interdimensional portal, but before adding Kazuma to the team, Byron and Faker made a trip out to a hypothetical location where they thought it would be. Faker didn't find what he was looking for, but Byron did get the Emperor's Key, so that's neat.
-Upon returning home briefly to see his younger sons, Byron gave the Key to Michael, figuring he'd love this kind of artifact.
-(Michael did in fact love it. Little nerd.)
-Byron then returned to his research, and then vanished. Michael and Thomas then end up in the orphanage, with Michael safeguarding what items he has left to remember his father (The Aztec Mask Golem card and the Key).
-Flash forward a few years, Michael is thirteen now, and due to a chain of events I have not worked out yet, the Key is activated and Michael meets Astral.
-(Michael is overjoyed at the interdimensional alien tied to the Key, if a bit annoyed that Astral's amnesiac state means he can't tell him much.)
-Michael also already knows how to play Duel Monsters already, but Astral still tries to backseat duel.
-Insert some Number hunting at the orphanage here. Michael's 'starter' Number is Chronomaly Machu Mech, and the first one he gets off someone else is Shark Drake.
-Eventually, when Michael is fourteen, Christopher/V finally comes back to collect Michael and Thomas from the orphanage. After everyone is reunited at Heartland, Tron performs the rituals to place the crests on Thomas and Michael, then requests that Michael return the Key to him.
-Michael refuses, not willing to sacrifice Astral, and Thomas, realizing that his baby brother and his invisible alien friend aren't safe in this situation, creates an opportunity for Michael to flee by picking a fight with V.
-Michael flees with the Key, only to end up breaking down later because he's now completely separated from his family, so soon after he'd thought he'd have them all back.
-Enter the Tsukumos, who let Michael stay with them for a while while he sorts himself out. He and Yuma start making friends.
-Michael is also encouraged to start attending school due to his age, and he tests into the first year of junior high despite being old enough for second year. This means he's now in the same year as Shark and Rio. This won't be awkward-
--Oh, wait, the whole situation with Shark, Rio, and IV happens. Things get awkward with Shark and Michael having to share a class, especially since Michael can't ask his brother what happened.
-Michael also continues Number hunting, though he's now racing his own brothers and Kaito for Numbers.
-Meanwhile, Yuma has also been getting inexplicably better at duelling? Despite not having Astral to help him? Odd, but okay.
-We finally catch up to where the series would have started. Michael is now fifteen and in second year of junior high, and Yuma has started at junior high as a first year. Finally, Michael and Yuma can be at the same school-
-Yuma also starts getting a bit concerned about the Key and Astral, but doesn't say much about why.
-Number hunting continues. Kaito has a WTF moment when he realizes that the guy scrambling for Numbers is Chris's younger brother
-WDC starts! Michael gets himself entered just fine, Yuma is also remarkably on the ball with entering!
-Michael and IV have at least one run in, then late on the second day Yuma and Michael witness V kidnapping Haruto. Michael only admits that the kidnapper was Christopher before he uses his crest to warp back to the Arclight family hideout in hopes of talking them down.
-But...Yuma is here. Wasn't he with Kaito a moment ago?
-Yeah. About that. Tron didn't like losing a pawn when Michael fled, and decided to just manipulate a new pawn instead of deal with an unwilling participant. And wouldn't you know it, Yuma happened to lose his father to Faker's betrayal, desperately wants to duel, and is kind of gullible, so Tron decided he'd make a good enough target, so long as he doesn't find out about the depths of the plan.
-Yuma got to learn to duel, is promised he'd find out more about what happened to his father, pretty much everything he wanted. Tron also convinces Yuma that the Key is influencing Michael like what the Numbers do to most people, so Yuma is convinced that he needs to help Michael by getting the Key.
-(The only thing keeping Yuma from just grabbing the Key sooner is the fact that Michael keeps it physically on his person as much as humanly possible, a habit picked up in the orphanage since leaving your stuff laying around there was a good way to get your stuff stolen.)
-How did Yuma get there before Michael did? Turns out, Tron decided to crest Yuma too, on the promise that it would let him control Numbers safely and protect him from having his soul taken by people like Kaito. Which was true, but conveniently left out what would happen if he lost while controlling a Number.
-In any case, Yuma, IV, and Michael all spend several minutes trying to convince each other to leave and back down before Kaito finally shows up via Orbital hangglider and forces a duel
-Insert Michael and Kaito VS IV and Yuma duel here. Yuma's signature Number is, of course, Hope.
-Duel ends, IV and Yuma flee, Haruto is returned with Yuma never being told what Tron wanted with Haruto in the first place. Tron claims his plan was simply to try and lure in Faker.
-Michael and Astral are horrified at finding out about Yuma, and end up sheltering with Shark for the night instead of returning to the Tsukumos. It's a good opportunity for Michael to talk to his classmate about what's happening/ask Shark about his interactions with IV and Yuma.
-(Shark got Leviathan Dragon instead of Shark Drake BTW. Michael still has Shark Drake, and IV was tasked with delivering Leviathan Dragon since Yuma wouldn't have wanted to hurt Shark.)
-The next day, Yuma contacts Michael and asks to talk. Talking turns into Yuma trying to get the Key in an attempt to save Michael from its assumed influence, which leads to a duel.
-Yuma finally tells Michael what Tron's been telling him and how he just wants to help/find out what happened to his father, Michael in turn tells Yuma the truth about what Tron wants/what the crest will do if Yuma loses while powerful Numbers are in play.
-They then find a way to loophole the duel's end so no one goes comatose, probably by having Yuma replace Hope with a Number not powerful enough to trip the crest.
-Flash forward a bit to the finals! Michael ends up having to face IV during the course of the finals, during which Tron taunts both of them at once. Michael wins, but is upset knowing his brother will go comatose.
-IV's last message to Michael before leaving is to tell him to keep going.
-IV: "Give Tron hell, Michael, Astral."
-Yuma saves Shark from Tron's influence as per canon, thus revealing that he's defected from Tron's side and knows what's truly up. (Tron's intention was for Shark to beat Yuma and let Yuma be cast aside once his role was done.)
-Michael and Yuma end up facing off one more time before the final. No playing around or loopholes this time, winner faces Tron and they both know it.
-Michael wins, and ends up crying as Yuma goes comatose as a result. However, Yuma does give Michael two new cards before slipping under: his signature monster, Hope, and Chronomaly Atlandis.
-Finally, Michael faces Tron and he's not happy. His brothers and Yuma are in comas, so many people have been hurt by Tron's scheming, and all Michael ever wanted was to have his family back.
-They duel. It's a mess, with Tron and Michael both giving their all, and culminates with Michael and Astral going Zexal.
-(Their Zexal form takes a lot of visual cues from Michael's gladiator outfit from the canon Yuma vs Michael duel, btw.)
-Michael wins, and when Faker takes all the Numbers, Michael attempts to save his father from being dragged in.
-Tron, realizing how far he's gone, releases all the affected souls and lets go of Michael, letting himself be dragged in to at least let Michael live.
-Seeing his father be taken away by Faker for a second time utterly breaks Michael. He decides to enact vengeance on Faker himself, storming off to the tower in a fit of rage, only to be intercepted by Yuma.
-After the breakdown plays out, the two decide to go in together to face Faker.
-Shark and Kaito end up turning up too, with the four all tag teaming against Faker.
-The gang wins, enter the second half of the series with the Barians. The only thing I have planned for the back half so far is Alito shows up and starts trying to flirt with Yuma, resulting in Michael getting jealous for 'some reason'. (He is oblivious to just how he feels about Yuma.)

Cuauhtémoc
Japanese Name: (クアウテモック)
Class: Saber
AKA: Cuauhtemotzín, Guatémuz, Last Aztec Emperor, Ruler of Tlatelolco, cuauhtlatoani, Hero of Unyielding Jade, Guatémuz the Valor, Cuauhtémoc the water sun
PROFILE
Default:
Cuauhtémoc, who fought the Spanish to the best of her ability, is considered a hero who defended her homeland from these conquerors, a symbol of valor. As she continued to protect her homeland, time came slowly like a fading sun; she wanted to save her people and homeland, but the Spanish executed her at the end of her life.
In historical records, Cuauhtémoc is a male, but she disguises herself as a male.
Bond 1:
Height/Weight: 154cm, 42kg
Origin: Historical Fact,
Region: Aztec civilization, Mexico
Alignment: Lawful-Good
Gender: Female
After pretending to be a man, she doesn't know how to react to affection.
Bond 2:
An Aztec Emperor who wants to bring peace and see her people's smiling faces when she becomes the emperor after the latest Aztec emperor in Tenochtitlan. It is known more as Mexico-Tenochtitlan during her time. She is a lovely and calm person who sincerely wants to change Mexico-Tenochtitlan for her people before Hernán Cortés, the conquistador who would later destroy the Aztec empire. She has an elegant, beautiful lady aura, and even when she talks to others, she is cheerful and exciting even though she has knowledge of the modern from the throne of heroes.
Bond 3:
After the death of the latest Emperor, Cuauhtémoc decided to protect her people and land. She opposed Montezuma's plan to allow them into Tenochtitlan and fought fiercely against them when she replaced Montezuma. Her unfailing distrust and hatred of the Spanish helped her rise to the position of Tlatoani upon the death of Cuitlahuac. There were no records of her fighting the war, but her extraordinary leadership and selfless defense of her homeland were. In her childhood, she witnessed the bloody battles of Aztec warfare since the Aztecs waged war to reap tribute and take captives for religious sacrifices. They were also given to Aztec society so victorious Aztec warriors could receive high honors. She wants to bring peace without violence and create a homeland of smiles.
Since Cuauhtemoc was not recorded in history until her reign as emperor, her date of birth is unknown. As the oldest legitimate daughter of Emperor Ahuitzotl, she probably attended the last New Fire ceremony to mark the start of a new 52-year cycle. In 1515, she was named ruler of Tlatelolco, with the title cuauhtlatoani, meaning "eagle ruler," after concealing herself as a male to enter the boy school and military service. She works hard to reach her position of rulership since Cuauhtemoc pretends to be a male of high birth and a warrior who has captured enemies for sacrifice because she prefers death to be their hands. She even earns a name known as Guatemuz from the Spanish conquistadors.
Bond 4:
Mana Burst (Water): EX She was blessed by the goddess of water and given the divine water that rivaled the fifth Sun of his power—the discharge of magical energy in liquid form. Having her Noble Phantasm concealed, her magic energy nature is established as water by the divine aura that emanates from it. Divine water increases its rank.
The embodiment of Mexico-Tenochtitlan: EX She is an emperor who wants to protect her homeland and wants to change Mexico-Tenochtitlan to bring peace. Her leadership path and unyielding will are refusing to surrender and wishing to save Mexico-Tenochtitlan.
Blessing of the Fifth Sun: B Even though tortured and captured, she refused to surrender, and some sources said, "Our Sun has gone from our vision and will remain in Mictian, the place where the spirits repose." She believes that Huitzilopochtli will guide Mexico-Tenochtitlan and the people who will survive, and one day, someone will bring her homeland peace to the people's future.
Bond 5:
『Inner World Chālchihuitl Blade』
Rank: A++
NP Type: Anti-Fortress
Sword of Jade
A weapon not forged by man nor divine was forged within the Inner Sea of the Planet. A Noble Phantasm that can rival Holy Sword Excalibur. A sword that is forged by the world from stores of many unknown weaponry that have yet to be discovered from the current time.
『The Fifth Sun Storm 』
Rank: A+
Type: Anti-Unit / Anti-Army Noble Phantasm
Range: 0-10
Maximum Targets: 1-20 people
This Noble Phantasm unleashes five slashes at once. This ability's fearsome power combines the five Suns of the Aztec gods into one Sun to become a rainstorm of blood that can rival Huitzilopochtli, who was honored above all in Tenochtitlan as the patron god of the Aztecs. While it is an Anti-Unit technique, it is so powerful that the surrounding area gets caught in the blast. (Naturally, its strength lessens when used as an Anti-Army technique.)
“Soy la uno como el sol, blessed by the given divine of the inner sea jade…May this sun become water, may the water become the blood of my people's death, SANGRE DEL QUINTO SOL CHALCHIUHTLICUE!”
Identity:
Known to the Spanish conquistadors as Guatemuz, he was the last Mexica tlahtoani of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. He assumed power in 1520, one year before Hernán Cortés and his troops captured Tenochtitlan. Cuauhtémoc, son of Ahuízotl and cousin of Moctezuma Xocoyotzin and Tecuichpo, when she reached nubility. He took power in Tenochtitlan after the conquistadors had already left, but famine, smallpox, and a lack of potable water had devastated the city. Cuauhtémoc arrived at this moment after having been tlakatekohtli (chief of arms) of the resistance to the conquistadors since the death of Moctezuma before the call by the Spanish "Sad Night," he has been identified as a military leader of the Mexicas.
Driven by his foresight and belief in the Mexicas' resilience, Cuauhtémoc orchestrated the reorganization of the Mexica army, the reconstruction of the city, and its fortification in preparation for the inevitable conflict with the Spaniards. He tactfully dispatched ambassadors to neighboring towns, seeking alliances and reducing their contributions, displaying his astute leadership.
After eighty days of warfare against the Spanish, Cuauhtémoc called for reinforcements from the countryside to help defend Tenochtitlán. The surviving Tenochcas sought refuge in Tlatelolco, where even women participated in the battle. Only Tlatelolcas remained loyal, and even women took part in the battle. As he and his family fled Tenochtitlán by crossing Lake Texcoco, Cuauhtémoc was captured on August 13, 1521.
Tragically, when confronted by the conqueror, Cuauhtémoc, pointing to the dagger on his belt, requested to be slain with it. Unable to defend his city and vassals, he chose to meet his end at the hands of the invader. This act, viewed as a sacrifice to the gods, was a poignant testament to the depth of his loyalty and the anguish of his defeat. According to duplicate Spanish accounts, Cortés declined the offer and treated his adversary with magnanimity. The brave warrior defended the capital, he claimed. Even an enemy in a Spaniard's eyes is worthy of respect. The end of his life can't help but feel a deep sympathy and sorrow for Cuauhtémoc's tragic fate.
Cuauhtémoc's death was not of interest to Cortés at that time. As a subsidiary of Emperor Carlos V and Cortés, he preferred to use his dignity before the Mexicas as Tlatoani. As part of the city's cleaning and restoration work, which occurred in the months following the conquest, Cuauh émoc took advantage of his initiative and power to secure the Mexica's cooperation. However, due to what the Spanish perceived as 'greedy Spanish stewardship and distrust of the Spaniards,' the last Mexica tlatoani was tortured and killed by Cortés.
Relationship:
Artotria Pendragon: “Altria…Wait, King of Knights. It is an honor to meet an ideal king. Ufufu, this is exciting. I hope she and I can have lunch together and get along as friends.
EMIYA (Archer), MORARSEU (Caster)(OC): "The red archer and the black caster both end up with the same fate but for different reasons. I could be their big sister and help them out! Also, I CAN HELP COOKING DINNER!"
Huitzilopochtli (Saber) (OC): "HUITZILOPOCHTI! I am your biggest fan, and I pray you can guide my people after the Spanish conquistadores. Sorry, this is out of character. It is just a big honor to meet our Sun of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. I am a bit surprised that you are different from what I hear.?? So you were summoned with a human male vessel. Still, it is a great honor to meet you. I mess up again!"
Tezcatlipoca: "...The black Sun, I don't like him. He is very selfish, and I hope he doesn't start a war because just because if he got into a fight with his other siblings. It will be another destructive battle."
Kukulkan: "The evil serpent, be careful, Master! Wait, what? She is not evil but a good serpent? Is she the sixth Sun, then? Sun of a lostbelt? Then, sorry for my attitude. If she is a lostbelt version, she differs from the Pan-human history. Maybe that's why my Noble Phantasm is acting up because of the merge with another God…. It's nothing, Master."
Quetzalcoatl: "ehh, Quetalcoatl? The Feathered Serpent. I thought you were a male god, but it seems you were summoned with the female vessel."
Tenochtitlan: "An embodiment of the city of Tenochtitlan before known as Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Our people indeed love our homelands. Am glad I meet you, Meztliapan. Then, let's be friends; I hope we can get along very well, and I can also help you introduce other servants!"
Gilgamesh (Archer): "Gilgamesh? Is he known as the King of Heroes? Why does he look at my Macuahuitl? He seems very mad and confused."
Yamato Takeru: "Takeru-san is a good person. We have some common interests, like blessing by divine water and sharing our favorite foods. I LOVE RICE BALL AND RAMAN! Takeru-san shares lovely, delicious food with me."
Castoria: "It's Altria-kun. She is a fun and energetic person. She is teaching me what magecraft is. She is fun to spend time with, and when it comes to food, I share my favorite food."
Uesugi Kenshin: "Kenshin is playful when we sparring. We play along well, but she seems to have lost something of herself. Even though I have the god-like power of my blade that rivals Huitzilopochtli's power, I want to help her in any way I can, not just to sympathize with her. But as a friend."
Something you Like: "My homeland, family and the people of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. I love food! My favorite is tamales of salsa verde con queso and Enchiladas Rojas with lettuce and cheese. It's yummy when I think about it. Sorry for my attitude, Master."
Something you Hate: "What do I hate? I hate Spanish, especially Hernán Cortés. My people and the latest Emperor were just too nice. The Spaniards' greed ruined my people and homeland."
About the Holy Grail: "The Holy Grail that can grant wishes, it is good but is not something I don't want. I accept my past and my actions. I want to see someone who one day brings peace to the people of my homeland."

“In the privacy of their own homes, away from the eyes of the Spaniards, what the Nahuatl speakers most often wrote was history. Before the conquest, they had a tradition called the xiuhpohualli (shoo-po-WA-lee), which meant “year count” or “yearly account,” even though Western historians have nicknamed the sources “annals.” In the old days, trained historians stood and gave accounts of the people’s history at public gatherings in the courtyards located between palaces and temples. They proceeded carefully year by year; in moments of high drama different speakers stepped forward to cover the same time period again, until all perspectives taken together yielded an understanding of the whole series of events. The pattern mimicked the rotational, reciprocal format of all aspects of their lives: in their world tasks were shared or passed back and forth, so that no one group would have to handle something unpleasant all the time or be accorded unlimited power all the time. Such performances generally recounted stories that would be of interest to the larger group – the rise of chiefs and later their deaths (timely or untimely), the wars they fought and the reasons for them, remarkable natural phenomena, and major celebrations or horrifying executions. Although certain subjects were favored, the texts were hardly devoid of personality: different communities and different individuals included different details. Political schisms were illustrated via colorful dialogue between leaders of different schools of thought. The speakers would sometimes even slip into the present tense as they delivered such leaders’ lines, as if they were in a play. Occasionally they would shout questions that eager audience members were expected to answer.” – Camilla Townsend, Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs

Ok here goes nothing I guess. I was going to do more characters but got stuck and decided to post those i have
COD MW x High school teachers AU concept. The Office/Parks and recreation/Abbott elementary style mockumentary
Shepherd: principal of the school. Low-key hates his work, doesn't trust his teachers. Hasn't talked to a real child in years. Good at his job though
Kate Laswell: vice principal. She loves her job, she's good at it. Finds time to teach mathematics. Hates the phrase"Fix it" (Hears it at least twice a week).
Phillip Graves: substitute teacher. Came one day, never left. But reminds everyone that he can go every moment. Teaches informatics and robotics. Tries to be on Shepherd's good side but doesn't miss an opportunity to get friendly with everyone else. As a hobby tells lies about himself to different people. (Told Soap that he loves crocheting and promised his a scarf).
Johnny "Soap" Mactavish: was obsessed with "Fight Club" in his teens. Outgrew it but the nickname stuck. Teaches chemistry (unrelated). Never misses the chance to show some explosion during the class. Hears the words "don't encourage him" more than his name. Doesn't let anyone except Riley call him "Johnny"
Simon "Ghost" Riley: "English, Mactavish". Hates when Soap's little sisters start chatting in Scottish. (He thinks they talk about him and Soap). (He is right). Teaches English and Literature. The nickname Ghost is because no one can catch him on photo at the parties.
Alejandro Vargas: History teacher. Also is in charge of the theatre club. His favourite prank to play is to visit Rodolfo's class in the beginning of the academic year and start a conversation in Spanish with him (every time it is something incredibly ridiculous like the history of cheese in the culture of Aztec). Then he looks at the students and asks them "You speak Spanish?" After they say "No" he deadpans "You will". Works every time
Rodolfo Parra: Probably the most popular teacher among mothers. Neither admits nor denies the existence of a partner of any kind. Smiles mysteriously and leaves in his bike. Teaches Spanish. Always complains when Alejandro does the "do you know Spanish" thing (but secretly loves it)

Weekend WIP Game
Thank you to @welcometololaland for coming up with this game!! And thank you to @cha-melodius @myheartalivewrites @happiness-of-the-pursuit @inexplicablymine @read-and-write- and @cricketnationrise for tagging me!! You all have such an absolute treasure trove of WIPs!!!! So excited about so many of them!!!
I've been very single minded about witchy WIP for the last two months so this was a cool way to remind me of my other children lol
1. WIP List: here be my babies
A Love that Haunts the Land aka witchy WIP (currently posting but still working on it LIKE A FOOL)
Ellen drabble collection/character study
caterer!Alex and out Prince Henry meet at a state dinner
Las Flores 3
marching band/high school AU
anastasia-ish AU
alternate universe king Henry
Shaan and Henry pre-canon character study
"Anonymous" Henry and Alex wear disguises to explore and end up at the Strand
Canon-divergence no Cakegate
I wanna post the two character studies next!!
2. Which of your WIPs is currently the longest?
Not counting ALTHTL, I believe it's Anastasia (~20k) but still has a long way to go
3. Which WIP do you expect will end up the longest?
I think canon divergence no Cakegate??
4. Which WIP is your favourite to write/the most enjoyable to write? Why?
My favorite to write is las flores 3 but i also overthink it. Most fun to write is marching band au bc I get to reminisce and I always ham up their personalities when I write them as teens which is extra fun
5. Which WIP do you find the most intimidating to write? Why?
Las Flores 3 haha I've set my own tone unfortunately and I feel like this one is all over the place as far as a theme. And I keep going back and forth on some character choices. Have already had two major rewrites
6. Which WIP do you experience the most self-doubt about. Why?
Ellen character study! It's hard to get in her head, especially bc I have a Thing about people in power
7. Which of your WIPs will you seek out a beta/sensitivity reader for? Why?
Probably anything that's a multichap! When a fic gets too long I get overwhelmed and can literally feel that I'm not editing as well as I'd like
8. Have any of your WIPs been struck by the curse of writer's block?
I flip between them pretty often but the ones that are probably the most dormant are no Cakegate and Anastasia AU (this one is bc I have a lot of filler left and it's hard to force myself to write that)
9. Which WIP has your favourite OC? Tell us about them?
Las Flores 3! My gang of family OCs is in it and I finally wrote Alex and Henry's children and they are both very adorable in different ways! I think Anonymous is the only other fic with an OC in it?
10. Which WIP is the sexiest?
Probably Anastasia? I think literally that is the only one with an explicit scene in it (MY FIRST)
11. Which WIP is the angstiest?
Shaan and Henry pre-canon and King Henry AU are both pretty angsty :(
12. Which WIP has the best characterisation (in your humble opinion)?
ooooooh I think no Cakegate. Trying very hard to stay as close to their canon characterization as possible
13. Which WIP has the best scene setting (in your humble opinion)?
ALTHTL has some very cool imagery bc I got to build a world from scratch!!
14. Which WIP have you worked the hardest on?
Either Anastasia (where i wrote 20k in one month) or no Cakegate (which is among the first fics I started writing)
15. Which WIP do you have the highest expectations for? Why?
Las Flores 3 hands down. I want it to feel like a natural continuation of that big overwhelming love from the first two, but so far it's more toned down and anxious haha
16. Do you dream about any of your WIPs?
no haha which sucks bc I do have very vivid dreams and I think it would be fun
17. Do any of your WIPs have particular complexities that your other fics don't?
ALTHTL!!!!! My GOD the worldbuilding in this one is wild!!! I started by giving myself a bit of a cop out but then fully committed to Aztec mythology bc it was hard to find concrete info on brujeria. So there's still creative liberties bc I wrote it with the scraps of information I could find (a blend of a well timed ologies episode on witches, ingrained catholicism, and two sketchy looking websites on Aztecs) and THEN two weeks ago I found an extremely helpful book on Aztecs and have been tweaking my own worldbuilding (hence the still working on it). But what BLOWS MY MIND is that I had stuff I built from scratch that ended up aligning like CRAZY with the real beliefs. I shan't spoil but if asked later I will divulge!
18. Which WIP is the funniest or has the most humour?
Las Flores 3! And ALTHTL has a very pointed effort to remain humorous to counter the heavy material!
19. Do any of your WIPs contain outside POVs or a deep dive on a character other than the main ship? How are you finding that process?
Ellen and Shaan's character studies. Ellen is hard to tap into!! Shaan is a bit easier but I get sad writing it bc Henry is going Through It :(
20. Tell us one thing we don't know about one or more of your WIPs.
Las Flores 3 has a moment inspired by an actual photo of my dad from the eighties sitting on the hood of a lowrider wearing a v-neck crop top lmao he's blurry enough that I may post it as a reward when I upload the fic

TOP 9 BOOKS
tagged : @hmsharmony ty jennifer this was SOOO hard oh my god like. genuinely agonized me for days to think about what to choose but it was SOOO fun tho <3 tagging : @rosesau | @evcndiaz | @pendrgcn | @gayarthur | @the-tenth-arcanum | @oretsev | @wherepoetsdie | @bellamyblakru | @ryekat & anyone else who wants to do it !!! rules : list your top 9 books obviously. i cheated a little and put series as as one option because that's just who i am as a person. most of these i chose at random from my 5 star reads from the past few years btw
1. percy jackson and the olympians (series) by rick riordan
i was never a big reader in elementary school—or at least not to the extent that my classmates had been. my sixth grade english class required us to bring a personal book from home for silent reading and i stole my brother's spine-cracked copies of pjo and brought them to class. i finished the whole series in less than a school week (i had to scramble to the library to pick up another series because the single novel should have lasted me at least three weeks). pjo literally kickstarted my love for reading as a hobby and i truly don't know how to state the importance it had on my little ten-year-old brain fr
2. on earth we're briefly gorgeous by ocean vuong
i have never read a book more beautiful in prose and so uncommonly human than this. there's just something so incredibly heartbreaking knowing this whole book is the narrator's letter to his mother who can't read! like what the fuck
3. alone with you in the ether by olivie blake
this came as a surprise to Me when i first read it. i meandered through the first quarter, loving the writing style but feeling disconnected from the characters until the Church Hand Scene™ and it was hook, line, and sinker at that point (i have since come to love the disconnectedness in subsequent rereads, knowing that the feeling was the Point). i have read this book four (4) times since i read it first last year. LAST YEAR!!! olivie has like... fundamentally altered my brain chemistry or something because i feel like everything i have written since having read this book has been somewhat influenced by it.
4. much ado about nothing by william shakespeare
what can i say! this is theeeeeee romcom ever. i have watched so many adaptations of this play, read it countless of times and can recite some iconic lines, and still the banter between benedick and beatrice is sooo elite. cannot be topped!!
5. a place for us by fatima farheen mirza
fun fact: seed rec'd this book to me and has been reccing it to anybody who would listen. the prose is so lush and melancholic. it's one of those books where nothing Really happens, but you feel Every Emotion Under The Sun and you're just like. altered by reading it
6. the song of achilles by madeline miller
obviously.... OBVIOUSLYYYYYYY this had to go here. if i had two nickels for every greek myth retelling i read during school that fundamentally changed me etc etc u get it. i read this as a junior in high school when we, yet again, had to bring a personal book to read durin class. i think at that point of my life, i've never read something that tragic yet so beautiful at the same time and now i am always looking at the beautiful and tragic in media. so! there u go! brain cells rewired and whatnot!
7. the grisha trilogy by leigh bardugo
this is funny because i . technically did not rate any of these books 5 stars i'm sobbing. but like, considering the fact that my url is what it is and the way i always have them in the back of my mind, it's no wonder that i put them here. i have such an odd attachment to these books and these characters. i had copies of these books since their release but didn't touch them until ... before the sab tv release which is so fucking funny. like i don't know what i would be like if i read this as a t(w)een. i would've been so fucking insufferable ngl
8. when my brother was an aztec by natalie diaz
i actually read this for an assignment and had to write a report on it and i had SO much fun doing it. diaz plays a lot with hunger and her imagery is literally unmatched. i think about the way she contructs sentences and am filled with such envy. my beginning sentence for my paper was a nod to her style (though i failed miserably). it was: "in a paradoxical sleight of hand, hunger feeds in natalie diaz's debut." she is just. so fucking good at words i need to CHOMP on it
9. sharp objects by gillian flynn
you know the thing where you see a really popular author for a really long time and they have their work adapted to the screen and it's so good but you still haven't read their actual writing? yeah, that was me with gillian flynn (specifically about gone girl). i read gone girl, i read sharp objects, i read her short story the grownup, i'm currently reading the last novel of hers that i haven't read, dark places, and flynn is just so... incredibly good at constructing harrowing stories. it's no wonder why all three of her novels got adapted to the screen! her prose is so grounded. vivid. there's this ease to her writing that, whenever i concurrently read another novel, i always find the other piece to be lacking. i slink back to flynn's prose and immerse myself in her awful, human worlds.
