Mesquite Trees at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes (Death Valley National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park with a view looking to the north and at some nearby mesquite trees. With this image, I wanted to include the trees as well as some nearby bushes and then align myself to have them fill the setting. I also like the backdrop of the snowcapped mountains and blue skies above to complement this national park location.

A Grassy Meadow on a Farm in Indiana Dunes National Park

A Grassy Meadow on a Farm in Indiana Dunes National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the Bailly Chellberg - Little Calumet Loop with a view looking to the north and across a grassy meadow in a historic farm in Indiana Dunes National Park. My thinking in composing this image was to manipulate the swivel LCD screen on my Nikon D850 and use that to capture a sweeping view across this meadow. By swiveling the LCD screen and using LiveView to compose and focus the image, I could also avoid having to bend down.

Yosemite National Park Is Ready. Are You?

Yosemite National Park Is Ready. Are You? by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the north while taking in views across the Merced River to nearby trees and then Yosemite Point and its dried up waterfalls as a more distant backdrop. Given the mostly cloudy skies that morning, I decided to work the angles of this setting with my Nikon SLR camera and have much of the mountainside with its peaks and ridges filling up the upper portion of the image. That would also add a sense of grandeur present in this portion of the national park. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Welcome Views First Seen in Petrified Forest National Park! by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: At a roadside pullout at Tiponi Point in Petrified Forest National Park with a view looking to the north across colorful badlands and eroded formations. A nearby sign mentioned silence one might hear in this part of the national park. Except for the wind, there was most definitely silence! In composing the image, I decided to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward and use the height from my viewpoint to capture a sweeping view across this high desert landscape in northern Arizona. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

It Only Takes a Moment or Step to Start the Story We Call Life… (Congaree National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: There was definitely something magical about walking this boarded walk in Congaree National Park! The tall cypress trees all around, sunlight coming from above and a nice coolness still in the air with spring temperatures.

The Spirit of Wildness (Petrified Forest National Park)

The Spirit of Wildness (Petrified Forest National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking down the beginning portion of the Onyx Bridge Trail, going down the high bluff portion into the main valley floor. The view is looking to the north across the quite colorful badlands and eroded formations present in this portion of the national park. From this higher vista-like view, I was able to capture a more sweeping look across this high desert, north Arizona landscape. My thinking was to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward which would minimize what I felt was the more negative space of the blue skies above.

Yellow Wildflowers Along the Colorado Highways by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view looking down to some nearby wildflowers I came across at a roadside pull off along Colorado Highway 149 just south of Powderhorn. After taking in views of the overlook, I happened to turn around and notice these wildflowers. I maneuvered around and down to capture something that best filled up this image.

A Raven Perched on a High Rock (Canyonlands National Park)
flickr
A Raven Perched on a High Rock (Canyonlands National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: Throughout the day in Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, I'd been searching for any sign of ravens. On my last trip, a few had seemingly followed me as I made my way from overlook to overlook. It was as I was getting ready to leave the Shafer Canyon Overlook area that I noticed one. Time to pull out the big lens! Here I got as close as I was able to before it flew off with my Tamron 150-600mm one, getting a quick meter off the darker feathers of the raven and composing with it more or less in the image center.
