Mates
I donât have a new fic for @gwynrielweeksofficial Mates Day, but I thought Iâd post a snippet of On My Radar for those who folllowed that journey with me and those who might be new. What could Gwyn be up to here?
Read the Complete Fic on AO3.
"Are these for just anybody?" He asked as he lifted a particularly ridiculous-looking cupcake toward his mouth. Nobody would miss this one and it would keep his mouth from getting him into more trouble with his family.
"No!" Gwyn screeched with sincere alarm plastered across her face. "Not that one. Pick something else."
Everyone looked at her rather awkwardly as her face continued to heat. The music played on, but no one spoke. Azriel chucked. Only Gwyn would have her heart set on this monstrosity of a cupcake. He looked back down at it with tenderness and noticed that some of the chocolate drizzle had dripped on him. Azriel shifted the cupcake to the other hand and lifted an icing-coated finger to his lips ready to play.
"Stop!" Now she was frantic. Now she was shouting. "Do not eat any part of that fucking cupcake, Az."
His eyes met hers, but his breath left him at the terror on her face. This was not her claiming her favorite of the reject cupcakes. Azriel looked again at the tray and there were a dozen of identically ridiculously decorated cupcakes. This was her demanding that HE not eat it.
He looked again at Gwyn and took in the smudge of icing on her face and the flour on her clothes. His body froze in suspicion. This was her NOT offering him any of the cupcakes that she had prepared with her own hands.
"Try that tray over there. Eat any of those you want. Emerie is a much better baker than me."

Letâs say that the Az BC was actually a Lucien BC. Letâs say that Lucien had a similar inner monologue during the same interactions with ElainâŚ
âŚcalling her âthe thirdâ.
âŚdescribing touching her as âso wrongâ.
âŚemphasizing several times what HE needed from her body.
âŚclaiming he hadnât thought about a future with Elain beyond the âfantasies he pleasured himself toâ.
âŚbeing willing to kill any other male for showing an interest in her.
Imagine Lucienâs flames becoming embers in Elainâs presence and him pointing it out too.
Imagine Lucien leaving that interaction, after calling almost kissing Elain a mistake, then immediately interacting with another female who caused his chest to spark as he imagined her reaction to receiving the gift heâd originally bought for Elain.
Honestly, even thinking about Lucien doing this gives me the biggest ick, because Lucien would NEVER even think of doing any of this to any female, let alone his mate, butâŚletâs just consider it.
Can you imagine anyone in the fandom trying to claim that Elain and Lucien were endgame after a BC like this? It would be SO obvious that the author is showing that Elain and Lucien are not compatible beyond their physical attraction even with a bond. No one would be able to argue that the Elucien ship had sunk.
And the way people would rip Lucien to shreds kinda like everyone did to Tamlin for thinking about Elain this way and use it as clear evidence that the bond will be rejectedâŚEven I, a fierce Lucien supported and defender, would hate to even consider defending this kind of behavior from him.
Yes, the big difference between the two BCâs is the existence of a bond between Elain and Lucien. But that just proves my point even more because everyone would be screaming about the obvious rejected-bond foreshadowing because of his behavior.
So why is this behavior considered romantic because Azriel does it? Why does it seemingly confirm to some that Az and Elain are destined to be together? Why is this less obvious because itâs Azriel?
As a BC alone, this chapter makes it pretty clear that E/riel just doesnât work even when they tried. If they were that compatible, Az would never have been able to stay away from Elain. This was the same guy who told Rhys to chain him to a tree and he would still rip it up to defend his loved ones. He truly believes that the cauldron was wrong and that Elain is his mate? Well, Cassian couldnât stay away from his mate. Even while dying, he still crawled to Nesta.
#imagine believing someone is your mate and then just staying away because Rhys said so?#Iâd be gutted if my mate acted this way#I really donât hate Az#or do I?!#because he does seriously piss me off#but I just expect better from him if he is going to deserve Gwyn OR Elain#Azriel Critical#anti Azriel#pro elucien#lucien vanserra#elucien#pro lucien vanserra#elain archeron#elucien supremacy#anti elriel#anti e/riel

I just want Az to meet his mate and for everyone to be shocked into complete silence when his shadows follow her to the kitchen when she goes to get another drink instead of staying with him and an innocent and oblivious Az to be like âwhat? she speaks to them and they like her?â and then we start the chaos of everyone but Az knowing theyâre mates and trying to tell him without actually telling him

I've Been Waiting For You | Azriel
summary: Azriel finally meets the one he's been longing for. His mate.
warnings: mentions of death (since the suriel & reader are friends); some angst but also fluff because Az deserves to be happy âĄ
a/n: This is part of my ABBA x ACOTAR series (masterlist) where I dedicate a song to a character (: The lyrics kind of reminded me of Alice & Jasper from twilight and how she had a vision of meeting him. This does go back and forth a lot in the beginning between past and present and came out longer than I thought it would. It's 9.6K words (which for me is long lol.) I apologize if there are any spelling errors. I've read this multiple times but somehow, always miss a couple.
As the moonlight dances upon the water's surface, the river transforms into a liquid ribbon of silver, weaving through the city of Starlight. Anticipation fills the air as Azriel walks across the bridge that spans the Sidra, his massive Illyrian wings glistening in midnight hues under the pale moonlight.Â
Shadows play hide-and-seek as they travel through the night, drawn to the silhouette of a female figure. An intruder. Yet, Azriel's shadows dare to whisper something different into his ears.
âIâve been waiting for you.â
Your voice, carried by the wind, reaches him like a sweet caress, daring to awaken something deep within him. Beautiful. His shadows respond with a frenzy, a whirl of darkness singing wild tales into his ears, urging him forward. Meanwhile, his brain screams at the potential threat.
More tendrils of darkness dart toward you, ignoring their masterâs orders to return. You donât seem bothered by them. In fact, you seem to welcome them as if theyâre old friends of yours.Â
Azriel swallows, uncertainty flickering in his eyes, unsure what to make of this.Â
âWho are you?â
Finally, you turn around and Azriel feels like the wind has been knocked out of him when his gaze meets yours. In the midst of the surrounding darkness, your eyes gleam with an inexplicable brightness. Specs of silver glimmer in your eyes, mirroring the stars above, as they shine back at him. Â
âThatâs for you to decide,â you reply with a smile that carries both hope and a sense of knowing as you follow after him and take a step forward.
âBut for now, Iâd like to speak with your High Lady.â
Months beforeâŚ
The brilliance of a thousand stars shine down on you and the night seems to hold its breath, as if it too, awaits the whispered prophecies from the celestial expanse above. Like always, you are itching to unveil them with your finely attuned senses. A gust of cool wind brushes through your hair, sending shivers down your exposed skin. Pulling your gaze away from the night sky, you turn in time to see a cloaked figure approaching like a shadow in the night.
Your lips curve into a smile. âHello, friend.â
ây/n.â The Suriel greets you, hovering beside you. Then, not missing another beat, he says, âI told her Rhysand was her mate.â
Your eyes widen in surprise, a gasp escaping your lips. âYou did not.â
âI did.â He grins back at you, flashing you his stained teeth.
You canât help but laugh a little at your dear old friend. The Suriel lets out a rattled sound you discern as a laugh as he joins you. Always the one for dramatics. You still remember hearing about his first encounter with Feyre Archeron and how he told her to stay with the High Lord.
âI told her she must stay with the High Lord.â
âDid you specify which one?â
âWhereâs the fun in that?â
âIâm sure she handled it well,â you respond but your smile fades, giving way to a wistful expression. âSheâs lucky. Not only is she made but the Cauldron has blessed her with a mate. The High Lord of the Night Court at that.â
The weight of his gaze settles upon you. Youâre aware that your words carry a tinge of envy, a sentiment that feels unjust when considering everything Feyre has endured. The Suriel, ever perceptive, acknowledges this as well. He chooses not to remind you and indulges you instead.
âThe Cauldron has blessed you as well, my child.â
âHave you seen it?â
Hope sparks in your eyes as you turn to face him. His eyes, pools of ancient wisdom, seem to pierce through the veils of time and secrets. You sense one of them unfolding. But he only gives you a teasing glimpse.
âPerhaps.âÂ
With a furrow in your brows, you lift your head back up to glare at the night sky. The stars seem to blink at you in a teasing manner, as if finding amusement in keeping this secret from you.Â
âHow come I havenât seen it?â
âYou will soon.â He reassures, following your gaze upwards. A dance of amusement swirls within the depths of his eyes. âHeâs waited centuries for you. Count your stars lucky that your waiting wonât be as long.â
Back to the presentâŚ
Velaris lived up to its name. A dream compared to the horrors of the city you grew up in. But as the city sparkles and comes to life at the darkening hour, all your attention is drawn to the male before you. Heâs even more breathtaking in person. Everything about him is classically beautiful and the moon seems to agree, shining down on him and casting an ethereal glow on the golden-brown of his skin.
As Azriel continues to approach you, his wings fold gracefully behind him. His gaze is locked onto yours and though his eyes are cautious and analytical, thereâs a warm shiver running down your spine. The desire to lose yourself in the hazel depths of his eyes becomes an irresistible pull.
Before you know it, the shadows brushing against your arms rise and come to rest against your eyes in a blindfold. Darkness engulfs you, and the sensation of weightlessness takes hold as Azriel winnows both of you. You land on a soft cushionâa chair. The dark tendrils leave your eyes and wrap around your wrists and legs, binding them together.
âStay here.â Azriel says, the shadows wrapped around your limbs tightening in a silent warning.
A chuckle escapes from you and when your eyes meet his again, you flash him a mischievous smile. It widens when heâs the first to fold, quickly averting his gaze. He has no clue. Youâre exactly where you want to be.
He leaves the room and your eyes finally take in your surroundings. Veiled curtains made of midnight blue silk drape the expansive windows, pulled back to allow moonlight to filter through. Shelves line the walls, housing collections of ancient artifacts and magical trinkets. A large desk, crafted from dark, polished wood rests before you. Your gaze fixates on the wall behind it, where a captivating portrait of the female you seek rests.
The door behind you swings open, and you turn to witness the graceful entrance of the female from the portrait. Feyre, the Cursebreaker and High Lady of the Night Court. She's a vision of night and beauty, her golden-brown hair cascading down her exposed back, revealing glimpses of moon phases etched along her spine.
âHigh Lady,â you say in greeting, bowing your head in respect.
Surprisingly, the High Lord doesn't accompany her. Instead, it's Azriel who trails behind her. Her calm blue eyes assess you as she takes a seat across from you. Azriel stands guard behind her and you feel his shadows watching your every breath.Â
"And who might you be?"
âIâm y/n,â you respond, choosing your next words carefully. âAn old friend of the Surielâs. Iâve come to pledge my allegiance to you and offer my help.â
Something flickers in her blue eyes at the mention of the Suriel and her stoic expression falters, if only for a moment. You send her a sympathetic smile, your own heart aching at the mention of the fearsome creature you both held dear.
âYour help?â She echoes.
"Sheâs a seer," Azriel interjects, his voice setting your heart alight as there's no hint of disgust or apprehension in his tone.
Your kind is often regarded with hostility. He might not know your connection...yet. But heâs paid you enough attention to recognize your abilities and appears to be indifferent about them. If the Suriel were still alive, you know heâd laugh at your slight delusion.
"I am," you confirm. "And I know your sister is one too." You donât miss the tension in Azrielâs body at the mention of the cauldron-made fae, but you don't dwell on it as you can also sense Feyre's protectiveness. "She has great potential. I can help her hone her skills. Together, we canâ"
"No," Azriel growls protectively. His sharp interruption has you startling in your seat and hope deflates as you feel the intensity of his glare.
Feyre raises a hand, signaling him to stand back. âWhy should I trust you?â
âLet me show you.â
Months beforeâŚ
âBy the Cauldron, what did you get yourself into?â
The Suriel grins mischievously, his tattered cloak barely clinging to his bony form. He graciously accepts the cloak you offer, a luxurious piece made of the softest velvet in the darkest shade of black you could find. A purr escapes him as he revels in its warmth. "Nothing," he responds coyly, the satisfaction evident in the bounce of his form as he hovers in the air.
You shoot him a pointed look, yearning to know what he was up to. Youâre certain it was no good. âSure,â you retort and then gesture toward the crackling fire you started. âI also made dinner.â
âYou spoil me.â
âItâs what friends do.â
"Friend," he muses, the white pools of his eyes burning into your soul, as he turns to you. "As a friend, I should tell you that your dress is absolutely atrocious on you. Cobalt blue is more your color."
With a glare, you playfully throw the roasted chicken over the fire at his face. He effortlessly catches it with his mouth, cackling as he chews on the tender piece of meat.
"What do you know about fashion? All you do is thirst for robes."
âYou forget that I am older than the bones of this world. I know everything about everything. I also cannot lie.â
"Doesn't stop you from hiding the truth," you respond cheekily, and he hums in agreement,
Silence falls as he seats himself beside you on the ground. He breaks it a couple of moments later. âRemember what I told you last time?â
You release a deep sigh because you do remember. The mere thought haunts you nearly every night, and youâre often burdened by the heavy weight of it. Your shoulders slump in response. âWhy can't you do it yourself?â
âIt is your fate, not mine,â he states simply, a reminder of the immutable laws of destiny.
âIâm not ready.âÂ
You donât think you ever will be and suddenly, youâre that fragile sixteen year old again, who had to run away from the only place you called home to escape a cruel fate. The one who was left to navigate through her new onset of divine abilities alone.
That is, until, the fateful night you had thrown your cloak over a tree branch to dry. It had been stained by blood after a rough and almost deadly encounter with a stray naga so you had spent all morning cleaning it in the river nearby. Completely unaware of the Suriel you were summoning.
âYou do not fear me?â
âThat is mine,â you had said through clenched teeth with a deep rooted glare.
In the midst of your tug of war with the Suriel, your cloak tore in half. In that moment, you braced yourself for the dark creature's wrath. However, something in you captured his attention that day, and he chose not to unleash his fury upon you. He decided to take you under his wing instead.
He recognized your lineage without a single word spoken about it. He could sense your power coursing through your veins, waiting to be unraveled. After decades of patience and practicing, he was there to witness the formation of stars weaving themselves into the depths of your eyes. The mark of your seer abilities.
As always, the Suriel reads you like an open book. He can sense your insecurity, your hesitancy. But, in equal measure, he can sense your power, your potential.
âYou will be,â he insists, his words carrying the unwavering certainty of the all-knowing creature he is. âYou must guide and open the eyes of Elain Archeron the same way I did for you.â
Your throat tightens. âWhen?â
âSoon.â
And when you look up to gaze at the night sky, the stars align for you. A cascade of visions unfurls, pouring over you like a celestial waterfall. Your eyes become a myriad of galaxies and ears are teased with glimpses of conversations and whispers from the stars above. One moment, youâre in a forest, standing before a female figure crouched over a cloaked one.Â
âThe trackingâŚI knew of it.âÂ
Then, a rattling breath. âLeave this world a better place than how you found it.â
Abruptly, the scene shifts, and you stand in an enchanting city of starlight, gazing at the expansive river before you as anticipation fills the air. He comes for you. Azriel, the shadowsinger. The name resonates in the echoes of your mind.
Then, the final vision envelopes you, drawing you into the depths of mesmerizing hazel eyes. The voice that accompanies it is carried by the enchantment of night, gently caressing against your ears.Â
âIâve been waiting for you.â
Mate. That is your mate. Azriel, theâ
âDo you see it now?â
With a sharp intake of breath, youâre pulled from the downpour of your visions, only to find your senses clouded with tears that pool at the corners of your eyes. How cruel, you think, your heart twisting in agony. And though meeting your mateâyour fated companionâwas among your greatest dreams, you no longer want it. Not if it means youâll lose your greatest companion.
You can live without knowing your mate. After all, youâre doing so at this very moment. The Suriel has been your friend for decades. Two souls brought together by their mutual loneliness. An all knowing creature and a seer. Together, youâre a powerful duo, navigating through the fated intricacies of Prythian. Youâd be lost without him.
âPlease donât go,â youâre begging.
The Suriel smiles but itâs not his usual mischievous grin. This time, a tinge of sorrow lingers in the curve of his lips, casting his expression in a veil of sadness.
âI have to. Itâs my time to go,â he says. âJust promise me one thing?â
âAnything.â
âThat when itâs your time to shine, youâll find Feyre. Help her make this world a better place.â
Back to Present
Feyre blinks back tears as she withdraws from your mind. She turns her head toward the Shadowsinger behind her, and for a moment, fear grips you. You allowed her to see the revelation of Azriel being your mate but only because it was deeply entwined with the other pertinent visions.
âRelease her.â
The shadows release their grip on you and you let out a deep exhale in relief. But the inky tendrils donât leave your side. They linger and hover over you and at this, Azrielâs eyebrows furrow.
Feyre extends her hand out toward you. Her blue eyes are warm, a gentle reassurance that sheâd harbor your secret for you. A smile graces her lips, one that you're happy to reciprocate.
âIâll gladly accept your help but let me speak with Elain first. You may stay here. Thereâs a spare room upstairs. Azriel will show you around.â
Following his High Ladyâs orders, Azriel shows you around the grand estate. Heâs a bit reserved around you and you donât blame him. Both a blessing and a curse, your visions offer insight into his world, yet you're a mere stranger imposing on the family he protects fiercely.
And as he finally shows you to your room, the one right next to his, you can only hope that someday, heâll welcome you too. After all, he is your mate.
Elain Archeron is infinitely beautiful. Inside and out. She is gentle and sweet and you see why some mistake her kindness for weakness. But it took only days for you to become well aware of the strength and power she harbors deep within.
While your abilities were limited to what the stars wanted to show you, you sensed that hers were limitless. With the right training, she could summon visions at her call, anticipate anyone's move. You wanted to help her achieve that and prove those people that saw her as something fragile wrong. Though reluctant toward your help at first, Elain was kind enough to listen to you and consider the advice you gave. It took some further convincing but you knew she was itching to unravel the depths of her powers too.
But it's proving to be a challenge. A hard and exhausting one. You're not surprised. It took you many years to become attuned to your powers. What is surprising, however, are Azriel's feelings for her. They're obvious and plain to see and could you blame him? Elain is wonderful...and you can't help but compare yourself to her. She's everything you're not.
Upon your arrival, you had been set on making Azriel fall for you. That was, until, you realized he was already entangled in the threads of another's heart. Could it be that the Suriel, in his all knowing wisdom, purposefully shielded you from such revelations about your mate? To delay the shattering of your dreams?
Now, you were just content to focus on your task at hand. To help Elain the way the Suriel did with you, even if Azriel was there as a safety net for her every session. Even if the way he was well attuned to every shift of her expression sent a sharp pain stabbing through your heart. He was blissfully unaware of your connection, clouded by his affection for Elain.
And you were tired of chasing after males. It's why you shot down Feyre's suggestion of confessing to Azriel. You dreamed of having a mate, pleaded to the Cauldron even. Now, you realize, that you want Azriel to like you for you. To chose you too the way Feyre did with Rhysand. If Elain was the person he chose at the moment, then so be it.
"I don't chase. I attract," you told Feyre. The same words you had uttered to the Suriel years ago after he poked fun at you over a failed romance. One of many, unfortunately.
"The only thing you'll attract with that attitude of of yours is a dark cloud of shadows," The Suriel had laughed at you, earning an icy glare from you.
But Feyre is much nicer about it than your dear old friend. She gives you an encouraging smile instead and wishes you luck on your upcoming session with Elain.
Your session with Elain ends terriblyâwith her screaming in pain and Azriel glaring at you and telling you to go, despite your attempts at apologizing. You spend the following days, weeks even, trying to make up for it. You slowed down in pace in your exercises with Elain, despite her protests. She held no animosity toward you at the dark turn that session had made.
You also buried yourself into any book you could find about seers in the magnificent Night Court library, grieving and longing for the Suriel. He would know what to do, and know exactly how to help. Itâs the mere thought of him that fuels your determination to keep trying, despite how much you want to leave. Itâs laughable almost, how in the midst of so many people, the sense of loneliness weighs heavier on you than it ever did in the solitude of Prythian's forests.
But perhaps, a break wouldn't be such a bad idea? You think as your gaze lands on an intriguing cover. It's a work of pure fiction. The ideal escape from reality. Retrieving it from its shelf, you settle into one of the plush chairs and immerse yourself into the words etched onto the pages.
âWake up, sleeping beauty.â
A nudge against your leg startles you awake, and as you blink away the remnants of sleep, your eyes widen at the sight of Azriel standing before you. Sleeping beauty, the words sink in, painting a soft blush over your cheeks.
âYou missed dinner.â
âOh.â
You turn your head, wincing at the dull ache in your neck from sleeping in an awkward position. The soft glow of the moon greets you through one of the library's windows. You donât know when you had fallen asleep but you mustâve been out for hours. When you face Azriel again, your gaze drops to his hands, where he holds a carefully arranged plate of food. Your stomach growls as the scent hits you and your eyes linger on the generous serving of potatoesâyour favoriteâin comparison to the other vegetables and meat.
âIs that for me?â you ask, and immediately curse yourself for the seemingly silly question. You blame it on the lingering grasp of sleep, still reluctant to release its full grip on you.
"No, it's for the rats that come out at night," he replies, lips twitching upwards at the reaction it stirs from you. How the Suriel never scared you but a couple of hairy, smaller creatures do is beyond you. He places the plate on the small table beside you.
"Yes, it's for you. A peace offering. For snapping at you."
"That was two weeks ago.â
"Bet you didn't see it coming," he teases, and you find yourself blinking in surprise. The Shadowsinger cracking a joke? It's a sight to behold. At least for you.Â
Your eyes narrow. "Did Feyre send you?"
"No," Azriel replies simply, his tone carrying a sincerity that sets a flicker of hope alight in you. He then sighs. "I just realized I haven't been the most welcoming, that's all."
You smile in response and shift in your seat as you turn your body towards the food. The movement has the book in your lap falling. His hand reaches the book before yours could and the brush of your skin against his sends a delightful shudder through your body.
His eyes curiously look over the title and when he hands it back to you, you take note of the way he avoids looking at his scarred fingers. So you reach forward and brush your fingers against his again, letting them linger for a beat longer than before. Surprise flickers in his hazel eyes as he meets your gaze, but it vanishes as quickly as it appears.
âThat book is one of my favorites," he says, his shadows dancing across his shoulders and peeking curiously at you. "I'm surprised you're into the mystery genre."
"Why?"
âWell, youâre hard to read sometimes. Like a mystery that refuses to be solved.â
An arched brow is your response, but the gleam in your eyes gives away more than you'd like. âMaybe I donât want to be unraveled.â
Azriel's lips twitch upwards once more. âMaybe it just takes the right person.â
Bathed in the glow of sunlight, you and Elain sit across from one another on the soft bed of green grass. Meanwhile, Azriel leans against a tree, a couple of feet away. His gaze is intense as he watches you two. Too focused on not letting it faze you, you fail to catch the way it softens when he turns to you.
Azriel canât help but frown when he catches you avoiding his gaze. He wonders if you still harbor some resentment toward the way he had snapped at you awhile back, even though he already apologized for it.
"Close your eyes and focus on your breath," he hears you instruct softly. "Feel the rhythm of the earth beneath you. Attune yourself to the heartbeat of the world around you. What do you hear?â
Elain closes her eyes in deep concentration. âI can hear the wind and the tremble of the grass beneath it. I can hear the wind carry all the way to the sea.â
âGood,â you say and though her eyes remain closed, you smile gently at her. A gesture that sends a rush of warmth through him.
âNow feel the whispers of the unseen.â
âI canât.â Elainâs eyebrows furrow.
âHere, take my hands,â you say as you reach for hers. âImagine a pool of water within you, calm and reflective. Use me as a vessel to carry you through it. Iâll guide you to where your visions will manifest.â
Elain does as told. The world stills around you two. You close your eyes. As Elainâs eyebrows relax, your own face contorts in concentration. Azriel feels himself tense when he realizes itâs not concentration etching onto your faceâitâs pain. In a heartbeat, heâs kneeling before you and prying your hands apart.
âStop!â
Your eyes snap open at the sudden disconnection, and Azriel is unsettled by the way you shrink back from him, panic widening your eyes.
âIâm not hurting her!â
But itâs not Elain heâs worried about. He hasnât even spared her a glance. Itâs youâyouâre the one thatâs hurt. Blood trickles down your nose and heâs urging you to lean forward, gently guiding you with his hands as Elain rushes for a towel.
âAre you okay?â
Thereâs a dull ache in your head but also one in your heart and youâre too disoriented to stop yourself from saying, âIf you stop staring at me like that, I will be.â
Azriel releases a soft chuckle, his muscles relaxing in relief at the playful edge in your tone. Yet, his shadows, wanting to confirm you're okay themselves, flutter toward you in a delicate cloud of darkness.
"Like what?â
âDonât make me answer that.â
And youâve never felt more relief at the sight of Elain coming in between you with a towel in hand.
A sudden sound has you stirring from your sleep. Your hand instinctively slides under your pillow, fingers grasping for the dagger you always keep with you when sleeping. The sound comes again and your initially alarmed body relaxes as you recognize it as the sound of someone knocking. Wrapping a robe around your night shift, you head toward the door, expecting Elain on the other side.Â
Upon opening your door, youâre surprised to find Azriel standing on the other side.
âYouâre not going to Starfall?â
âGood morning to you too.â
Azrielâs eyes rake over your form, taking in your disheveled state. His lips curl into a faint smile. "It's noon," he observes in an amused manner.
Your eyes widen in disbelief, and you pivot your head toward the clock that hangs on the wall of your room. There, confirming his statement, the hands point a half hour past twelve. You overslept. You didnât have any plans today and it seems your exhausted body took advantage of it.
âIs everything okay?â
His voice, laced with genuine concern, draws your attention back to him. The soft furrow of his brow and the warmth in his eyes catch you off guard. You hesitate. You donât want to lie but you also donât want to burden him with the truth.
So you settle for a, âWhy?â
"I've noticed you haven't been sleeping much," he remarks, and before you can interrupt, he gestures toward his room, the one adjacent to yours. A silent acknowledgment that he's been more attentive than you realized. It pulls at the strings of your heart. "Or attending family dinners, and now Feyre tells me you're not going to Starfall?"
The weight of his observations presses on you. You didnât think anyone had noticed. "Why do you care?" you retort, your words sharper than intended, and a wince follows.
"Isolation is not a good coping method," he responds, his tone steady and unfazed by your sharpness. "Trust me, I know."
"I don't have a dress."Â The words escape your lips, but even as you say them, you recognize the feebleness of the excuse.
âIâll buy you one.â
Heat rises to your cheeks, and you feel a telltale blush spreading as the thought of Azriel buying you a dress takes root. Heâs just being nice, you tell yourself. His gaze remains fixed on you, hazel eyes bright and gleaming with curiosity, as if daring you to come up with another excuse.
âStarfall is tomorrow.â
Azriel grins at you. It sends a flutter through your heart and you wonder if he can hear the erratic beat of it.Â
âBetter make haste and get dressed then. Weâve got a couple of hours before the shops close.â
You deliberately take extra time getting ready, a mix of anticipation and apprehension swirling within you as you prepare to spend time with Azriel. Half-expecting a hint of annoyance, you finally open the door to your room, only to find Azriel with a welcoming smile that has the bond in your chest humming. Still, you're met with silence at the other side.
You take a deep breath as he gestures for you to follow him. As you step outside, he offers his arm and winnows you, not wanting to waste anymore time. You both find yourselves in the bustling shopping plaza of Velaris, where the fragrance of blooming flowers and the animated chatter of people embrace you.
Elaborate Starfall-themed displays adorn the shops, enticing you inside. Suddenly, the sheer array overwhelms you, and an urge to step back washes over you. Azriel place a hand on your back, stopping you and guiding you towards one of the shops.
âWelcome!â A voice happily chirps. âHow can I help you?â
A stunning female enters your line of sight, her gaze immediately fixating on the male standing behind you. Her lips curve into a captivating smile, causing a twinge of jealousy to flicker within you. Itâs short lived as Azriel clears his throat, gently nudging you forward.
âWeâre looking for a dress for her.â Azriel speaks for you.
âSplendid! Whatâs the special occasion?â
âStarfall.â Azriel answers.
The femaleâs eyes widen, her smile morphing into a strained one. âIâm afraid Iâve sold all my best work already.â
âOh, thatâs alright. Sorry for the trouble,â you quickly reply, attempting to conceal the relief in your voice. Turning to leave, Azriel's hands land on your shoulders, directing you back to face the female.
âIâm sure we can find something in here,â Azriel reassures with a polite smile, scanning the aisles of dresses. âY/n isn't picky. Right?â
âI can be,â you mumble under your breath.
Azriel lets out a sound, what you discern as a muffled chuckle. He gives your shoulder a squeeze and then leans down toward your ear. âIf I were you, Iâd take advantage of the situation.â
You turn your head slightly and regret it immediately. It takes all your strength to hold back the shudder your body wants to give at his proximity. Heâs so close you can feel his breath fanning against your neck and you wonder what it would feel like to have his lips pressed against that sensitive skin.
It surprises you how quickly you find your voice.
âIâm going to pick the most expensive one.â
âGo ahead,â Azriel says and you can hear the smirk in his voice without having to look at him. He doesnât allow you to get another word in, urging you forward again to where the female patiently awaits for you.
She lightly grasps your arm, leading you toward a rack of dresses in various styles and colors while Azriel makes himself comfortable on the couch by the fitting room. âYou are a lucky lady,â she muses, her hands gracefully exploring the textures of her creations. âIâve had this shop for centuries and youâre the first lady the Shadowsinger has brought to me.â
A blush warms your cheeks as you divert your attention to the array of beautiful dresses. Each one is a work of art, making you question her earlier claim about not having her best work available. If these weren't her finest creations, the thought of what her best work looked like leaves you intrigued.
The female, whoâs name you learn is Willow, has you try on a couple of dresses that differ in styles. Youâre reluctant to show Azriel each one but given heâs paying for it and the only other one in this shop, you feel like he should have some say.
âDo you like it?â Willow beams at you, admiring her work.
On the fifth dress, your hands run over the tulle of the vibrant yellow skirt. The fabric feels itchy against your skin, and the color is too bold for your taste. You swear you are not trying to be picky, despite what you told Azriel earlier.Â
âI liââ
âLetâs try another?â Azriel cuts in as if sensing the lie that was about to unfold. He rises from his seat toward one of the racks and pulls out a dress that caught his eye earlier. âHow about this one?â
He holds the dress out to you, smiling softly when you take it from him. Itâs much simpler compared to the other dress youâve tried on but still just as elegant. Itâs also soft against your skin. Willow guides you back into the fitting room, deftly assisting you out of the vivid yellow dress and into the cobalt blue silk one.
âI donât know how I didnât see it before. Cobalt blue is more your color!" Willow says as she gushes over you.
Her choice of words leaves you momentarily stunned. Cobalt blue is more your color. The exact words the Suriel had spoken to you. Also, the exact same shade as Azriel's siphons. The Suriel mustâve enjoyed himself a lot when he said those words to you. That sneaky little creature... You can hear his laugh echoing through your mind.
As you finally emerge from the dressing room, Azriel canât help but stare. The fabric drapes gracefully around you, accentuating curves he hadn't noticed before. Sensing his prolonged gaze, your eyes meet his. It was him quickly averting his gaze, a subtle flush coloring his cheeks. He clears his throat, attempting to regain his composure.
"This is the one. It looksâŚgood on you," he manages to say, his voice slightly strained.
âItâs 500 gold marks.â
He picks up on the teasing in your tone and the way Willow shakes her head in reassurance at him. Still, he humors you and says, âI donât care.â
Heâd pay more than 500 gold marks just to make you happy.
Azriel battled with restless thoughts that night, unable to find solace in sleep. Each time he closed his eyes, the vivid image of you in that dress invaded his mind. He couldnât wait to see you in that dress again. Maybe then, heâd have the courage to compliment you better.
As the sun dipped below the horizon and the first guests arrived for the Starfall celebration, Azriel's eyes eagerly scanned the gathering crowd, seeking a glimpse of you. Just as a twinge of disappointment crept in, his shadows stirred, signaling your proximity. His wings twitched with anticipation, and his breath caught in his throat at the sight of you. You are absolutely stunning. Breathtaking.Â
In an instant heartbeat, heâs pushing Cassian, who was ready to fly you up to the House of Wind, aside. With a warning look, Cassian steps away with a chuckle.
"You're here," he whispers, a blend of disbelief and relief saturating his breath.
âWell a very nice male spent a lot of money for me to be here.â
âWell Iâm glad.â Azriel chuckles, eyes drinking you in again. Savoring you. âYouâre beautiful.â
âSo are you.â
Azriel flushes at the unexpected compliment and his shadows to come to life around him. He smiles at you. âShall we?â
He waits for your nod before carefully hooking an arm beneath your knees, eyes never leaving yours. A thrill courses through him as he revels in the sensation of your arms around his neck, taking delight in the way you feel in his arms. His wings unfurl behind him, preparing for the short flight up. The sound has your eyes fluttering shut, arms tightening around him and face burying into his neck. He finds it absolutely endearing. He never wants to let you go.
Against his wishes, the flight up to the balcony was short. He sets you down, helping you regain your footing, a lingering touch before reluctantly releasing you. Thereâs still more guests he, unfortunately, has to fly up. Itâs as if you sense his internal conflict because youâre turning around to face him, eyes bright and alight.
âYes, Azriel. Iâll save you a dance.â
The way his name rolls off your tongue sends a thrill up his spine. He opens his mouth to say something but once again, you beat him to it.
"Thought I'd save you the question," you stated, an all-knowing grin gracing your features as you tapped the corner of one of your eyes. Ah, so you had a vision of him. He wonders about the other glimpses you might have seen.
He doesnât have too much time to dwell on it as Elain is rushing toward you, showering you with compliments. He takes that as his cue to depart. He is determined to finish his tasks in bringing the remaining guests up as fast as he can so that he can return to you and that dance you promised.
Azriel finds himself stealing glances whenever he thinks you wonât notice. The sparkle in your eyes, the way the dress accentuates your featuresâhe can't look away. Caught up in the melody of your laughter, provoked by something Elain said, Azriel and his shadows are too mesmerized in the beauty of you to notice Feyre approaching until she speaks.
"Sheâs beautiful," Feyre remarks, her eyes following the same path as Azriel's gaze.
A soft affirmation escapes Azriel's lips. "Yes."
Feyre, well aware of the answer, delves further. "You bought her that dress?"
âYes.â
A mischievous gleam flickers in Feyre's eyes as she delivers her next statement. "You like her."Â
Azriel's response slips out before he can even grasp the depth of his own admission. "Yes."
He turns to Feyre, his wide eyes betraying the shock of his own revelation. A slight pallor washes over his skin, and Feyre chuckles at his reaction. Sensing the tension in the air, she rests a reassuring arm on his shoulder. âI like her too,â she confesses.
Though, both of them recognize that Azriel's feelings for you run deeper and in more intricate ways than Feyre's own fondness.
âI offered her a place in this court. She said sheâd think about it. Maybe you can convince her? The same way you convinced her to come to Starfall,â Feyre says and then with one last pat on his shoulder, she makes her way back toward Rhysand.
Still recovering from the revelation of his own feelings, it takes a while longer for the weight of Feyreâs words to sink in. A mixture of surprise, uncertainty, and a flicker of hope plays out across his features. You werenât planning on staying? The thought of you leavingâleaving him stirs a feeling in his chest. His eyes seek you out again but youâre no longer standing beside Elain. Â
In your place, stands Lucien and normally the sight would trigger dark emotions from him. But now? He feels nothing. Thereâs no sense of envy. His affections have shifted elsewhere.
Azrielâs shadows fall to the floor, slithering against the cool tile like serpents of the night. They lead the way directly to where you stand, by the champagne table. He makes his way toward you and you're downing the rest of the liquid in your glass.
âAzriel.â You smile at him.
âItâs time for you to fulfill the promise you made me.â
âOf course,â you reply, offering him your hand.
Azriel gracefully pulls you into his embrace. One hand wraps around yours while the other rests on your waist. The enchanting melody guides your movements as the two of you glide across the floor.
âFeyre told me she offered you a role in this court.â
Your eyes, wise and mysterious, meet his, and he feels your body tense under his hold. âWhat else did she tell you?â
âThat youâd think about it,â he says, the rhythm of the dance allowing for a moment of ease to settle between you. âYou should stay.â
âWhy?â
A wistful expression colors your features and the soft glow of stars are reflected in your eyes. The music comes to a gradual end and you free yourself of his hold before the next song begins.
âThereâs no one here for me.â You admit and then give a small laugh as you look down. There's a deep, haunting sadness to your laughter, striking a chord within him.
âIâm right here.âÂ
Lifting your head back up, your eyes search his for something with a glimmer of hope. An eternity seems to pass in your gaze. A frown settles over your lips and he feels a tinge of sadness. Whatever you sought, it seems you did not find it.
Suppressing the surge of emotions within him, his hand reaches for yours again. He guides you to somewhere more private, toward one of the balconies that is off limits to the guests. âTalk to me,â he says, his words carrying an invitation for you to unburden your heart.
Your hands grip onto the railing before you and attention is directed up towards the night sky. He mirrors your actions, resting his hands close to yours. So close he can feel your warmth but not close enough to touch.
"It feels weird being here," you sigh deeply. "My mother and I used to sneak out of Hewn City on Starfall just to catch a glimpse of these migrating spirits every year...until she realized what I was. She said I was a curse, said she would turn me into Keir and let him have his way with me if I didn't leave."
Azriel's fingers clench into a white knuckled grip at your words.
"Not that leaving a horrible city such as Hewn was exactly a punishment. It was probably for the best. Still didn't stop me from being scared. It was the first time in my life that I was actually alone. I learned how to survive."
"I met the Suriel a year later. He must've taken pity on me and would visit me without being summoned. Sometimes, it'd be to tease me with some gossip. Other times, to annoy and chide me for my mistakes. Most importantly, he taught me how to not only survive on my own but live alone. I don't know, it's probably silly but I just felt a lot less lonely when I was actually alone than I do here."
âItâs not silly. I used to feel that way too.â Azriel admits and after a moment of silence, heâs turning toward you. âAm I not your friend?â
âI donât know,â you find yourself saying again, uncertainty clouding your expression. Pausing, you tear your gaze from the night sky to look at him. âDo you want to be?â
âYes,â Azriel smiles at you. And so much more.Â
You smile back at him but it doesnât last long. Turning your head to face directly ahead, you bite the inside of your cheek in hesitation, revealing to Azriel that thereâs more troubling you than your sense of loneliness.
âWhat else?âÂ
âThereâs nothing else.â
ây/n.â
âI feel like a failure.â
Azriel's eyes widen, his heart sinking to his stomach. âYouâre not,â he reassures quickly.
âIâI just,â you stammer, the weight of self-doubt evident in your voice. âItâs nearing four months since Iâve arrived, and I feel like Iâve barely scratched the surface with Elain.â
âHow long did it take you to harness your abilities?â
âDecades,â you respond, the admission carrying a hint of sheepishness. âBut Elain is different. This is different. I donât want to disappoint her. Disappoint Feyre. The world we know is crumbling apart, and we donât have time. Ifâif we cannot fix it before itâs too late, I will have failed him.â
âHey, look at me.â
When you donât, Azriel lightly grips your chin, coaxing your gaze to him. âYouâre here, arenât you? Youâre honoring his wish by just being here. Keep trying,â he encourages, wiping away your tears. âIâll be here with you every step of the way. Youâre not alone. Weâll face this together.â
âTogether?â
He releases his hold on you, resting his hand once more on the rail. This time, itâs even closer to yours.
âTogether,â he confirms, heart swarming with warmth when your hand bridges the gap between you and brushes against his.Â
And finally, it seems your lonely days are through.
Azrielâs been in love before. Twice. Or at least, he thought it was love. One was unrequited, a silent ache he carried within. The other was forbidden, a love he had clung to with misguided hope. He was beginning to come to the begrudging conclusion that love was simply not meant for him.
Then, you came along. Strange as it seems, you've seemed to have brought back that old feeling to him, awakening something deep inside of him. And though he doesn't know what you did, he thinks--he hopes that you could be the one. The one to possibly release him from the chains of solitude and longing.
You've rarely left his mind since the night he met you. The echoes of your first words to him lingered in his mind long after your encounter, âIâve been waiting for you.â
Your voice was cloaked in both mystery and certainty, as though you held the threads of destiny within your grasp. It prompted him to ask who you were but your answer, âthatâs for you to decideâ only gave rise to more questions.Â
Then, there was that smile. So beautiful, so hopeful. It etched itself into the recesses of his memory. It was a smile no one had ever bestowed upon him before and one he longed to see it again.
And he almost ruined it allâthat day he snapped at you after a session gone wrong with Elain. Your intentions were always pure. He knew this. No one was at fault as everything that transpired between you and Elain was completely consensual. But the scream that tore through Elain sent him in a heightened frenzy. He had sworn to Rhysand and Feyre, his High Lord and High Lady, that he would protect Elain. Before he could properly assess the situation, he had roughly pushed you aside with a growl. The hurt that flashed in your eyes in response haunted him nearly every night.
You began to actively avoid his gaze and presence whenever possible, and guilt gnawed at him relentlessly. Even his shadows, missing your attention, seemed angry with him. Truth be told, he was angry with himself too. You had made friends with everyone. Everyone but him.
The following two weeks became a series of futile attempts at groveling, your obliviousness to it all cutting deeper than he cared to admit. The breaking point came when you missed dinner, and he knew it was time to set things right then. So he sent his shadows to look for you and when they reported back to him that you were sleeping in the library, he brought your dinner to you.
After that moment, the atmosphere between you two shifted. He became the chaser, gradually closing the distance between you.
You looked his way more, approached him with a newfound openness, and your conversations became more frequent. You teased him at times, even, with your cryptic words. But rather than frustrating him, it only made him seek you out more. He wanted to be the one to unravel the mystery that was you.
Somewhere down the line, his eyes stopped searching for Elain's. The private moments he sought with her became mere echoes of the pastâno more lingering touches, exchanged glances, or pointless conversations. Instead, it was you who occupied the center of his attention, infiltrating his dreams and igniting desires he never knew he harbored.
You eased him like no other, effortlessly coaxing smiles and laughter from him. It was in these moments that the realization struck him like a bolt of lightningâhe had never truly been in love during the first two instances. What he felt for you was different. He was unwilling to let his feelings linger in the shadows, as they had done before. He yearned for them to step into the light. To be acknowledged and acted upon openly.
He decided to wait until after Solstice to confess to you and hoped that your visions wouldn't give him away.
Laughter and clinks of wine glasses ring through the air. Azriel knows itâs time to open presents, his shadows singing loudly and overwhelming him with information. Cassian is sneaking a peak. Rhysand is rolling his eyes. Elain got Lucien a present. y/n is holding back tears.
Azriel tenses at the last bit of information, eyes immediately finding you. Youâre seated beside Feyreâthe two of you exchanging smiles. Thereâs an unwrapped present on your lap and his shadows dart toward it. Itâs a small portrait of the Suriel. He hears you thank Feyre and he swears he can feel your ache of grief. He moves to stand from his seat but Elain stops him.
âHappy Solstice,â she says, holding out a small present. He takes the box albeit reluctantly but politely and opens it to find two tickets to an upcoming play.Â
Elain smiles at the frown heâs trying to hide.
"Elain, I can't--"
âY/n mentioned always wanting to go see a play. I thought maybe you could be the one to take her. After you confess."
His eyes search hers for any traces of hurt. Heâs relieved when he finds none but the frown in his brow remains. âHowââ
âShe trained me well," Elain replies, eyes shining with an all knowing gleam he's seen in yours. "She deserves to be happy. You both do and something tells me that sheâs the one youâve been waiting for.â
Gods, you and Elain have been hanging out so much with one another that now sheâs beginning to talk like you. There's a tightening in his chest, like a band about to snap at her words.
Azriel looks back at Elain in question but she only smiles at him once more before retreating back to where she was sitting previously. Next to Lucien, who also sends a smile his way.
Looking down at the tickets, he thinks of you again. His shadows stir, mirroring the strange sensation in his chest. Itâs almost like a pull and his shadows guide him toward it, turning his head for him. Just in time to catch a glimpse of you quietly slipping away from the festivities. His steps quicken as he follows you, pulling his coat along with him.
The soft flakes of snow flutter down, a delicate dance in the winter night. Despite weeks of continuous snowfall, the enchanting beauty of it never fails to captivate you. It differs markedly from the unforgiving snowstorms you endured while wandering the Night Court's forests. Though just as cold, it prompts an involuntary shiver, a reaction to the biting chill in the air.
As the door behind you creaks open, a rush of warmth accompanies its movement. The scent of cedar invades your senses, growing more intense as you feel a fabric drape over your shoulders, bringing forth an intimate warmth.
"Hey," Azriel breathes, a visible puff of white escaping his lips.
"Hi," you smile back at him, your fingers instinctively reaching for the coat that draped over your shoulders. You can't help but notice the thin sweater he wears. "Won't you be cold, though?"
Azriel stops you, securing his coat back onto your smaller frame with a reassuring smile. âI grew up in a camp where it snowed a lot more than this. Iâll be fine.â
You look back up at the night sky. The stars are shining so bright. It makes you wonder if they ever tire. They seem to answer you as their radiant beams cast a celestial glow upon you. Your vision blurs in surrender.
âWhat are you seeing?â Azriel inquires, curious. He hopes it's not the confession he's aching to spill.
Your eyebrows knit together, and you close your eyes, immersing yourself in deciphering the messages woven between the stars. Upon opening your eyes, you turn to Azriel, a teasing smirk playing on your lips.
âYou're going to get frostbite."
Azriel lets out an amused huff. "I don't care. As long as you're warm."
"We should head back inside," you suggest.
"No," Azriel insists, enfolding a wing around your form, anchoring you in place. His shadows can sense you don't want to go back inside yet. "I like being alone with you."
The wind nips at your cheeks, a sensation you welcome as it gives the perfect excuse for the blush creeping across your face. Tearing your gaze away from Azriel before he can discern his effect on you, you quietly share, "Nyx is going to say his first word in three days."
Azriel leans forward and you can feel his anticipation. A familial bet circulates among his uncles and aunts (save for Elain) regarding what the young heirâs first word will be. âWhat is it?â
âCas.â
Azriel can't resist glancing back toward the house, his eyes narrowing with a mix of suspicion and curiosity. There, he catches a fleeting glimpse of Cassian playfully hoisting Nyx in the air, the two engaged in a lively game of chase around the living room. When he turns his attention back to you, mischief twinkles in your eyes.
âYouâre lying.â
âYou fell for it."
And that smile heâs been longing for since he met you graces your lips as you laugh. A sweet and beautiful sound that warms the winter air. Azriel's gaze dips toward your lips, captivated by the sound, before lifting back to meet your eyes. He leans in even closer.
âI fell for you.â
You also lean in, eyes never leaving his. "The answer is yes."
"What?"
Azriel nearly stumbles back, caught off guard, but you remain close, lifting a hand and cradling his cheek. It's surprisingly warm and he instinctively leans into your touch. His eyes widen. Did youâ
âTo you taking me on a date,â you reveal, your smile deepening, and he swears his shadows snicker in response. âThe vision I just saw. It was of me and you at a theater. Next Friday at seven.â
âNext Friday at seven,â Azriel confirms, a tender affection lighting up his expression.
The air seems to shimmer with the promise of an enchanting future. You reach out, tugging at the bond in your chest. Once again, there is only silence. Yet, you canât bring yourself to care anymore. Not when Azriel is gazing at you as though you are the very stars illuminating the night sky.
And then you're kissing him.
The snow crunches underfoot as Azriel moves, his usually keen senses dulled. His mind is elsewhere, consumed by thoughts of you. Even as the icy missiles fly past him, Azriel remains lost in the memories of shared glances and smiles and the way your lips felt so perfect against his last night.
For the first time in years, Azriel finds himself on the losing side of the annual snowball fight. Oddly, no disappointment lingers, even after meticulous planning for this anticipated victory. All he wants is to return homeâto you.
Amidst the snowy chaos, revelation strikes him simultaneously with a snowball from Rhysand. The snap, the bondâeverything falls into place. It all makes sense now. Your words when you first met. Elainâs words last night at Solstice. Why your presence thrilled and delighted him. Why he couldn't shake the feeling of love and adoration for you.
You are his mate.Â
The one he had been longing and pleading for, and the realization left him breathless. He shakes the snow from his face and Rhysand blinks back at him in surprise. The High Lord had been expecting a glare but he only finds pure shock on Azrielâs face.
âOh come on, I didnât hit you that hard,â he teases.
âI have to go.â
âIf you leave, youâre forfeiting,â warns Cassian, but the glint in his eye betrays a desire for Azriel to leave, eager for a victory.
âI yield,â Azriel says mindlessly, surprising even Rhysand. Feeling his friend's talons probing his mind, Azriel throws up his shields and disappears into his shadows, abandoning the snow-covered battlefield. He'll explain later.
For now, he has to find you.
His shadows winnow him back to the River house and he doesnât have to look for long because there you are, making your way down the last step and standing in his path. Thereâs not much that surprises you but that has changed since meeting Azriel and this moment is no different. Your eyes are widening, mouth parting.
âAzriel," you say. "What are you doing here? I thought you wereââ
âItâs you,â Azriel interrupts breathlessly as if he was running, chest rising and falling quickly in step with the erratic beating of his heart. Heâs bridging the distance between you. âAll this time. Itâs been you.â
You swallow thickly. âYou know?â
The glimmer of hope that had ignited during Starfall returns to your eyes, revealing a world he hadnât realized existed. How could he have been so blind?
Azriel smiles at you and itâs as if thatâs the last piece to the puzzle as the bond between you both comes to life, singing loudly against your chests. He pulls you flush against him and spins you around, eliciting a delightful squeal from you. Cradling your face in his hands, he kisses your forehead, then the corners of your eyes. He saves your lips for last, lingering in the sweet taste of them for a moment longer.
âYouâre my mate,â he says quietly, leaning his forehead against yours.
âYes,â you manage to whisper back, surrendering yourself to the depths of his mesmerizing hazel eyes, just like in the vision from months ago. And itâs not you who speaks again but Azriel.
âIâve been waiting for you.â
a/n: hope you all enjoyed this (: It took me longer to write than I thought because i'm used to writing more angst for Az than fluff but I wanted this to be different. It's canon that Elain found out that reader and Az were mates through a vision around the same time she decided to give Lucien a chance. I just want them all to be happy ⥠in terms of my ABBA x ACOTAR series, I think I'll work on another one for Cas next inspired by Honey, Honey. If you'd like to be tagged, just let me know!

Holy Ground - Chapter 2
Summary:
Nobody knew that Azriel found his mate. Until she nearly died. This is the aftermath.
Warning:
Rhys Bashing (as usual), Inner Circle Bashing (kinda), Referenced/Implied Sexual Assault, Referenced/Implied Domestic Violence, Discussion of Religion(?), Chronic Injury/Pain/Illness, Minor Character Death (It's probably nobody you love), Magical Work Accidents, Explosions, Injuries
If any of this triggers you or makes you uncomfortable, please take care of your own mental health and don't read it.
Azrielâs shadows liked to spoil his mate rotten.
Not that Azriel could find anything wrong with that.
She deserved more for putting up with him.Â
More than new tea from the Dawn Court and her favourite chocolate covered, wafer thin cookies from a small bakery near the SidraâŚmore than the occasional embroidery thread they snuck herâŚMore than whatever animal he went to go hunt, to cover his bed in even more furs just for her.Â
He nearly had enough Sable furs to have a blanket made for her for Winter SolsticeâŚ
Azriel also had half a mind to go sneak in her office later that day.Â
Just as a treat for not killing either of his brothers. For being civil.Â
Rhys had come over for sparring, unnannounced.Â
Azriel had hoped to have some peace and quiet today, but it seemed like Rhys had other plans.Â
Currently Cassian and Rhys were wrestling with less sense than they had had when they were just kids, and Azriel was cleaning his weapons, watching from the sidelines.
Azriel couldn't help but roll his eyes at the sight of his brothers roughhousing. It was typical of them to turn a simple sparring session into some kind of ridiculous competition. He focused on sharpening his knives, trying to ignore their antics.
"You know, we could also actually train properly," he called out, his tone dry. "Instead of wrestling like a bunch of children."
Cassian looked up from his grappling with Rhys, grinning. "Oh, come on Az. Don't be such a stick in the mud. Loosen up, have a little fun for once."
Azriel's expression remained impassive. "I'm perfectly capable of having fun, Cassian. But I prefer to do so without rolling around in the dirt like a wild animal."
Rhysand chuckled, standing up and clapping Cassian on the back. "It's good to let loose every now and then, Az. You should try it sometime. It might make your brooding sessions a little less depressing."
Azriel just grunted in response, not willing to engage in a verbal sparring match with Rhys. He continued to clean his weapons, hoping that the training session would end soon so he could escape his brothers' teasing.
âWhen did you even come home yesterday?â Cassian asked him.
Azriel looked up from his work, his expression neutral. "Around 11," he said simply.
âYou didnât come to dinner,â Rhys pointed out. âYou were missed.â
He highly doubted that.
And maybe he had made that mission in Dawn just a little while longer, so that he knew that dinner would be over and when he came home, he wouldnât need to be alone.
Azriel just shrugged. "I was busy," he said, offering no further explanation. He knew his brothers were just trying to rile him up, and he wasn't about to give them the satisfaction of a reaction.
*Are you still pissed of at me?* Rhys asked him mentally with a sigh. *I get it. But you donât need to avoid everybody else, just becauseâŚ*
*Iâm not avoiding anyone,* Azriel replied, his mental voice tight. *Iâm simply choosing to spend my time how I see fit.*
âI was busy,â he repeated aloud.
Cassian rolled his eyes. "You're always busy, Az. You know, there's such thing as taking a break once in a while. Spending time with your family."
Or he could spent time with his mate. He could spent time with his mate, who let him brush her hair and even braid it âŚwho pressed kisses to his horrible scarred hands and smiled at him.Â
If it was a choice between Irena or a family dinner where he didnât want to stay longer than an hour or two, because he was still too fucking pissed off at RhysâŚthe choice was easy.Â
âOr is there a special somebody?â Cassian teased him.
Azriel glowered at him. "Itâs none of your business." He went back to working on his weapons, his expression tense.
*You canât keep panting after Elain for the rest of your life,* Rhys said mentally. *Look, I know I didnâtâŚI am sorry. But sheâs happy with Lucien andâŚ*
*Donât worry, Iâll go to a pleasure hall and pay for it if I want to fuck somebody,*Â Azriel shot back viciously.
Or his own hand would suffice. More than suffice, especially ifâŚespecially if Irena had let him kiss her the evening beforeâŚsometimes he waited until she disappeared into her room, and he buried his face in the pillows that smelled like her, fisted his cock and rutted like an untried boy for seconds before he came all over himself.Â
It was still better than any other sex he ever had had before.
Cassian raised an eyebrow at him. "It sounds like you need to get laid," he said, chuckling. "Maybe that'll help with your bad mood."
Azriel shot him a glare. "Mind your own business, Cassian. My love life is none of your concern."
Rhysand gave him a sympathetic look. *We just want you to be happy, Az. You deserve happiness.*
âOhhh, touchy,â Cassian said with a snort.
Azriel just gritted his teeth, his temper rising. "Cassian, if you donât shut your mouth right now, I swear to the Mother, Iâll shut it for you."
Cassian just grinned at him. "Come on, Az. Iâm just teasing you. Lighten up."
Azriel's grip on his weapons tightened. "I don't like your teasing, Cassian. And I certainly don't appreciate you making assumptions about my personal life.â
Mostly he just wanted his brothers to leave him the hell alone.
And then...then before he could say another thing...he felt the shaking.
And then the sound came. An eardrum shattering explosion, the very foundation of the House of Wind shaking. It was terrifying him.
Irena was down there in her office. Nesta was in there.Â
He was moving before he was even thinking.Â
*Merrill's office, Master!*Â the shadows screeched.
Azriel was already running.
Cassian hot on his heels, so was Rhys.
Azriel was faster, heaving shadows around his limbs as he rocketed down the spiral stairs of the House of Wind.
Level Two, Straight to the right. Clearly...Clearly the epicenter of the blast. Of the explosionâŚof whatever had happened.
He pushed as hard as he could, legs burning as he hurtled down the hallway to Merrill's office.
He wasn't the only one. "Merrill!" He could hear Gwyn's shrill voice screaming, coming to a stop in a hallway of what had once been Merrill's office but now was just...
It was a mass of wood and rubble.
He barely slowed down, scrambling into action. Gwyn was already digging through it, so where Nesta and Emerie. Cassian landed behind him, immediately moving some of the debris.
His shadows swarmed as he and the others quickly dug at the rubble. Looking, desperately looking.
He moved another piece of rubble out of the way...a piece of blue cloths. The same blue cloth that he knew covered Irena's body, the scent of poppies clinging to her...Without a thought, he grasped and then dragged, a hoarse shout that was her, that was her...
He felt as if he were choking, as if he were drowning as he dragged out her body. Bloody, bruised, broken but still...still there was a faint flicker, a faint, thready heartbeat.
His heartbeat pounding in his ears, he tried to pick up on her heart. There was barely a flicker. Too fast, too faint, she was barely holding on. Barely hanging by a thread.
There was blood pooling on her abdomen, dying the blue dress she wore bright scarlet red, He put pressure on that wound immediately, leaning on her with nearly all his weight, his fingers slick with blood. "Damn it, stay with me, love," he demanded sharply.
Azriel felt like he could barely breath. Like he was falling, tumbling down as he tried to will her to stay with him. Stay. Stay. Stay. Please stay. Stay...
Rhys was there suddenly, checking her pulse. "Breathing is erratic. She's in shock," he told Azriel with a grimace. "Mor is getting Madja..."
"Az..." her voice was so weak, but he turned to see dark brown eyes watching him, brows furrowing.
"Just keep breathing, Love," he told her, trying to stop his voice from shaking.
He could barely hear what was going on around him. It was as if he were in a bubble, a world of just himself and her and the desperate beat of her heart under his fingers.
"I am sorry," she whispered.
"There is nothing you need to apologise for her, Irena," he promised her sharply. "Absolutely nothing."
Irena's eyes drifted shut. Azriel felt like something was dying inside him as her heartbeat fluttered against his fingertips. His world was collapsing, shattering into pieces as her breath stuttered.
"Stay. Just stay..." he was barely aware of what he was saying, his eyes frantically searching hers. She had to stay. He would do anything to keep her here. Anything.
"I am still owing you that flight," he told her. She hadn't let him take her flying yet. They had snuck away in the library...in the rooftop garden...in her office. But he had never gotten to take her flying. He had never gotten to take her out into Velaris. They had never had a date at a fancy restaurant, had never gone to see the symphony. There were thousands of things that he hadn't yet gotten to do with his mate, because they had all the time in the world.
Irena just stared at him, her eyes pleading, as her heartbeat slowed, fluttering weaker and weaker. Azriel felt a sharp pain in his chest as fear clawed at his spine. "Just hold on a little longer, love," he whispered. "Please."
And then there Madja. Thank the cauldron. There she was.
Azriel could barely manage to let go of her, his mind consumed with the singular thought of Irena's laboured, erratic heartbeat as he moved back. Madja immediately set to work.
He lunged for her head, lunged to pull it on his lap, to touch her with blood slick fingertips, her normally rosy red lips pale, her skin even whiter than usual.
"Hurts," she whispered, as Madja set to work, barking orders.
"I know, I know, love," he whispered, touching her cheek with his fingertips as Madja got to work.
His eyes searched hers as he murmured those words over and over, as if he could somehow hold her in this world through sheer force of will alone.
"We haven't had enough time," he whispered desperately, leaning his forehead against hers.
She was slipping away. He could feel it. Feel her slipping, feel her heartbeat slow. Feel the thread that tethered her to this world fray, fray, fray...
No. He couldn't lose her. Would not let her leave him. He had waited far too long for her. Far, far too long to let her slip through his fingers.
"Stay with me," he pleaded. "Please stay with me."
But her eyes were slipping shut, her head lolling to the side. He gently patted her cheek, trying to urge her back to consciousness, but he didn't think he was even really aware of what he was doing, where he was. The world had boiled down to a desperate litany, in his head. Stay...stay...please...don't you dare...
âI am going to be so furious with you if you die. We may have our first fight,â he told her fiercely.
He needed her to know that he would be there to be furious with her if she dared to die, that she couldn't die. Couldn't. That she had to stay. Had to keep fighting. There were too many things ahead of them...a wedding to plan, children to have, years and years of life to live.
âAz,â she breathed his name, her eyes not even open anymore.
âOpen your eyes, Irena,â he demanded. âLook at me, love,â
Her eyes finally fluttered open at his command. It was barely more than a slither of brown, but he latched onto it, taking it for what it was. A chance. A moment to get through to her.
He wasn't sure what he was saying, but the words spilled forth from him, a litany, a desperate prayer. "Please," he breathed, "don't go...don't you dare..."
He was dimly aware that the others had gathered, but he didn't dare look away. Didn't dare look away from her as he cradled her head, trying to pour all of his prayers into those words. All of his hope and desperation.
"You can't go." A statement. An order. An absolute certainty in his voice. "I will not let you go."
He wouldn't. Would never, ever let her go. Would drag her back from the Cauldron's grasp with bloodied and broken hands if thats what had to be.
She didn't speak. Didn't need to. He could read her answer in her eyes, the determination in those brown eyes as she tried so, so hard to stay.
It was as if she were holding on for him, because he had asked her to. Because it was him there with her. Like she would fight until her last breath because he told her too. He didn't deserve this beautiful creature, who was willing to fight for him, willing to live for him.
It was something primal, something desperate, something fierce as he whispered those words over and over, like a prayer. "Fight. Fight. Fight."
And she listened. She did. He could feel her hold on, just barely grasp hold of that tether that kept her in this world. Just barely keep her eyes open.
Just look at him.
And she did, those dark eyes unfocused but open, staring up at him, watching him. Trying so, so hard. It nearly made his heart stop in the most terrible way that she was struggling for him.
And he was so proud of her. Of the way she was fighting like she was. Of the way she was grasping, hanging on to life like she was.
The seconds stretched too thin, feeling like eternities and only the slightest of moments. But her eyes were open, if only barely. She hadn't given up. Hadn't let go.
He was dimly aware of the others, Gwyn hovering with a worried expression, Madja murmuring quiet instructions to the others, Rhys kneeling not far away. But he barely glanced at them, barely dared to take his eyes off Irena.
He was certain that if he looked away, if he let this tenuous thread sever, that she would die. That as long as he kept her here, she wouldn't slip, wouldn't let go.
He had one hand on her cheek, her skin still clammy and pale, as her eyes slipped open and shut. But everytime, they would find his face. His eyes, like he was the only thing tethering her to the world. It hurt. Hurt so much to see her barely holding on, only that last sliver of determination keeping her here.
"Please," he pleaded, whispering those words like a prayer, like he would be praying to a vengeful god. Those moments felt like eternities, stretching on and on with only his desperate whispers. "Please..."
The world felt so still, so silent as if the world was holding its breath. Azriel's eyes locked on Irena, silently begging her, asking her to please, please...
Live, live live... he whispered those words over and over, a desperate plea to the Mother, the Cauldron, to anyone who would listen. To Irena, the only person in the entire world who truly mattered in that moment.
Her eyes were growing glassy, slipping closed only to jerk open again. Stay he demanded. Keep looking at me. Please.
She tried. Mother, she tried. Her eyes drifted to him, the smallest hint of life, of a spark there in those dark brown eyes.
He hardly dared to breathe, hardly dared to move. Afraid that any wrong move could tip her over the edge, could pull her into that chasm of non-existence that she was desperately clinging too.
He felt something pricking at his eyes, felt something in his chest cracking, breaking at the sheer intensity of emotions thrumming through him. It hurt. Hurt so much to see her like this, so pale, barely holding on, barely conscious...
âAlright,â Madja said quietly. âGood girl. You were so very brave.â
"Will...will she be alright?" He asked, voice hoarse.
He didn't let his eyes drift from Irena's face, her half lidded eyes staring at him. It filled him with such an intense pang of relief and fear at the same time. Relief, because she was alive...and fear, because they had been so close to losing her.
"She's not out of the woods yet," Madja warned. "But she'll make it. She lost a lot of blood. It will take some time to get her vitals stable again."
He felt like he could breathe for the first time. It was almost dizzying, the sheer, intense relief that flooded through him. Irena was here. Irena would live. It filled his veins with an almost drug like euphoria, that made him light headed, a smile twitching at the corners of his lips.
He barely managed to keep that feeling in, the pure euphoria from showing as he smoothed a strand of hair back from her face. "Thank you," he whispered, voice hoarse, eyes finally dragging away from Irena's face to look at Madja. "Just...thank you."
He looked back at Irena, taking in her face. Alive. Still alive. Still here with him, not gone. The tension seeped from his shoulders, a strange sort of exhaustion taking over. As if all the adrenaline that had fueled him, the fear, was slowly draining out of him like water.
âMerrill,â Irena whispered, her voice near silent.
Azriel felt his fingers brush her cheek, just the gentlest touch as he tried to keep it together. It had been too close. Too, too close. He couldn't stop the overwhelming feelings flowing through him of elation and fear as he looked down at her as he looked down at her, alive. Alive and breathing and whispering soft words. "Shhh," he whispered softly. "Save your strength. Don't strain yourself."
He looked up finding Cassians gaze who just shook his head. Merrill was dead.
Azriel couldn't quite process that information, not in that moment. His eyes were still drawn to Irena, still unable to take his eyes off of her for more than a moment. His fingers brushed her cheek again, just the faintest touch as he pressed a small kiss to her forehead. "Rest," he instructed softly. "I'll be right there.â He promised.
âBeing here to her room,â Madja said quietly.
âMy room,â he corrected.
The priestesses dormitory was locked from males. If he even tried to get in there it wouldâve end well for him. And he wouldnât leave her side.
âYour room?â Gwyn asked sharply.
âGwyn,â Rhys said quietly.Azriel didn't even acknowledge Gwyn's words, didn't have the energy. All he could focus on was the way Irena's eyes had drifted shut, the steady rise and fall of her chest. She would be alright. She was going to be alright. She was alive. Right now, in that moment, thats all that mattered.
âAz, how long have the two of youâŚâ Cassian asked hesitantly.
Azriel just shrugged, his hand resting on Irena's hair, smoothing back from her face. âTwo years. Sheâs my mate,â he said flatly as he gathered her up.Â
âMate,â she rasped. âMine.â
âYours,â he agreed softly.

âŠâË.ââžââşâ⧠And I wouldn't marry me, either part 2
You were Azriel's mate, but it took losing you three times for him to realise.
[thank you for the love on part one, Iâm so happy Azriel is getting the love he deserves!!!! This is another long one, another 6k. But Iâve learnt a new love for writing about him and i have so many ideas. This is a continuation and final part, part one here. Enjoy]
warnings: references to sexual assault and references to suicide. nothing explicit but please don't read if this is sensitive to you.
The third time Azriel almost lost you, he was pretty sure he lost a part of himself.
They'd all gone into battle, knowing that Hybern had the numbers to match and the advantage. But they'd all gone to fight in spite of that.
It had took some time for you to get the boys to agree to let you fight- you'd trained and grew up with all three of them but this was fighting on another scale. Although, if they were going, there really wasn't much they could say to get you to stay.
You were clad in Illyrian leathers just like them, armed with weapons and power.
The first battle was over quicker than you'd anticipated. Hybern soldiers surrendered, Tarquin drowned them on land. You'd suffered little, only falling on bed exhausted by the end of the day. Sadly, you were sharing a tent with Cassian and Azriel. It was like you were young again, all sleeping in the same room. It was a habit you'd done when you were young- all looking out and protecting each other.
The only difference was that Cassian snored as he got older.
But the next battle was worse.
It was bigger than last. Hybern's forces had doubled, seemingly at of nowhere, cutting their forces apart.
It was chaos, everywhere. Every corner there was fighting and bleeding and dying. There was pain all around you. Pain you felt like it was your own.
You used all your power, as much as you could to kill and protect. From the corner of your eyes you could see Azriel fight. Your Azriel, weaving in and out of people. Your mate. He was alive. And that was all you cared about.
But you didn't realise how much you'd been pushing herself and draining your power. Every time you stopped, you swayed on your feet, stumbling.
One of Hyberns men came for you as you were crouched and you barley blocked with your sword, rolling onto your back and slashing his arm off.
Not before he landed a sword in your thigh.
It had been deep burning and you yelled, yanking it out. Even with the wound, you kept fighting and fighting your way through until you saw a blaze of red and a familiar cry.
Cassian.
He'd been run through.
It was easy to push past exhaustion and winnow to his side, killing the man who'd been near him and any others that had been close enough. You fall to your knees next to him. 'Cassian, you prick.'
'You kiss your mate with that mouth,' he gasped. He was the only one who knew about Az and the bond. The only one you'd allow to make jokes.
You look down to his wound and gaged. Mother above, his guts were hanging out. 'No, no, no, come on, big guy, you have to stand.'
He groaned. 'Yea, don't think I can do that, sweetheart,' his eyes, lulled back.
You slap him in the face. Perhaps you wouldn't have felt guilt if it weren't for the way his eyes widened. 'You know I hate being called that.'
He laughed as his stomach and all its contents heaved out. Ignoring the pain in you, you hold his stomach, keeping him together. 'I promised Nesta i'd look after her,' he said. 'Please look after her.'
'Do it yourself,' you groaned.
Finally, Azriel came to your side and picked Cassian up like it was nothing, flying him to the tents. If only you still had your wings, you could have done it, saved him quicker.
Then, you were thrown back into the battle. Covered in his blood and yours, you fought through them all, slashing and killing like it was nothing. Like you had no reason to bat an eyelash at anything happening.
Eventually, it ended, but you couldn't even concentrate on who won or how much you'd lost. Your head ached, your leg was tied up in a bloody bandage ripped from your clothes. But none of that mattered.
Cassian was in bed, healing slowly. But he would live, everyone could tell. Especially with the way he picked fights. He argued with Rhys about throwing himself into danger, him and Nesta appeared to be having words with their eyes. Even Mor and Feyre argued. You were the only one silent with Azriel in the back. Too exhausted to even open your mouth.
That night, you tied up your wounds and fell asleep without changing.
It only got worse.
Elain- Feyre's sister and the most precious- was stolen from Hybern. You had only agreed to go and save her with a few selected others because your mate was in that few selective others.
It hadn't escaped your notice how he looked at her, was watchful over her like he once was with you. You saw the tick in his jaw at the news she was gone. You knew that this was the reason you hadn't told him. Knowing that he deserved someone like her, better than you. Kind and hopeful. You weren't. So the only thing you could do was watch your mate find love in someone else.
And you'd do it grudgingly but happy for him.
Azriel had took of with her. You and your high lady fought, fought through ash arrows and everything.
'You should get out of her, y/n,' said Feyre.
You groaned as an arrow skimmed your shoulder. Another had already got your hip. 'If you try to order me out of here, i'll be really pissed off at you.'
'I don't care if it gets you out!' she snapped, arguing like a real sister would.
'Yea, well- I was never one to listen to Rhys either.'
And Azriel was gone. Everything was fine.
You and Feyre ran, ran even as Tamlin defended you, ran until-
An arrow hit you in the back, straight to one of your old wing scars.
You tumbled, rolling on the ground as it broke and imbedded in your back. You screamed, in spite of yourself.
'You have to fly,' someone was telling you. Or saying it in general, frankly you had no idea what was going on. 'You have to take her.'
You rolled onto your stomach, groaning and trying to get yourself up. There was blood running down your arm, how did that get there?
'Y'n.'
You groaned, 'Azriel. I can't fly.'
'I know, I know- i've got you.' He picked you up, arm under your legs and around your shoulders.
'Elian, Azriel-'
'Feyre has her,' he told you. He sounded angry. Or afraid. Somehow his emotions were very easy to mix up.
'Feyre isn't strong enough.'
'She'll have to be.'
'You should take them, Elian-'
'I don't give a fuck about Elian right now, y'n.'
Just like that, he took off with you in his arms and your blood raining down on the camp of Hybern. You could barley hear anything over the wind... but you could feel it.
Something had tugged painfully at the bond, throwing you into a scream. Something had happened to Azriel. You twisted in his arms, finding gashing claw marks in his back from one of the hounds that had chased them down. His face was bleached white in pain, his hold on you tight.
Glancing around, you could just see Feyre in a blur of people.
'Azriel-' you gasped. He was in pain, so much pain.
He didn't say anything, just squeezed you tighter and looking ahead, barking orders as Feyre flew for the first time in need, in desperation. You remembered what that was like, trusting your life in them. But Azriel's wings, they were bleeding out. You remembered the pain. You'd go through it every day to spare him a minute of it.
âŠâË.ââžââşââ§
You and Azriel landed back in the camp in a blur of pain.
Even with him leaving a trail of blood, he managed to set you down like you were porcelain. You didn't cry out. You didn't yell for help. You threw his arm over your shoulder and supported him.
Nesta and Rhys rushed to Feyre.
You hated your brother for a long moment.
Elain wondered over, chained but whole.
Azriel moved from you, checking on Elian. You only managed to watch them as she kissed his cheek.
The pain came to you then. Your head, shoulder, back. You turned from the crowd of family. Elain moved to hug her sister, Rhys stayed at Feyre's side.
Thesan, someone you barley knew as more than a healer, came to you first but you pushed him away, pushed him to Azriel. 'His wings. Heal him, or i'll rip you to pieces.'
He didn't have to be told twice.
You stumbled your way to camp, to your little tent. You didn't share it with Cassian anymore as he was still healing and Azriel would be a while- needing healing of your own.
You collapsed on the bed, promising to look after yourself- just after your nap.
You were so fast asleep you didnât even hear Azriel come in and sigh at the sight of youâŚ
âŠâË.ââžââşââ§
Azriel was fighting when it happened. Specifically, when it snapped.
Mate. Mate. Mate.
No, he wasn't completely healed. But he had to fight. He wouldn't push himself, he knew that would be stupid. But he wouldn't watch as everyone fought. As you fought. He'd hardly seen you. He knew your back would be in pain. He knew you'd be in pain and you were still fighting, so far from him and out of reach.
He was thinking of you when it snapped.
Mate. Mate. Mate.
His soul sang it, his heart rose with it.
His shadows whispered it.
Mate. Mate. Mate.
y/n.
And the first thing he felt over the bond wasn't happiness or love. It was pain. It was death.
Mate. Mate. Mate.
In spite of the pain in his wings, how he'd been told not to fly, he did. He jumped into the skies, soaring over armies and dead to find you. He followed that pain, he followed the bond until he found you.
You, lying in your own blood. Again.
He fell next to you, his power eradicating anywhere near you. They dissovled, the ground cracked under him and his syphons shone in raw power.
'y/n?' he held your body, shaking you. Blood, so much. A sword had torn through your gut. 'Don't do this to me.'
Mate. Mate. Mate.
You cough, a thin stream of blood rolling from your lips. 'Azriel?'
'You're mine,' it was the first thing he could bring himself to say. 'You're my mate. Y/n. You have to hold on, ok? I'm gonna-gonna get you to safety.'
Something like a laugh escaped you, your body wracking with it. 'Of course, finally snaps for you as i'm dying.'
Snaps for you. Mate. Mate.
She knows, his shadows sung. She's known.
Azriel called out to Rhys in every way he could. 'We're gonna be fine. We're gonna be mates, y/n. You have to live, you understand?'
'Not really.' your eyes flutter shut.
'No!' he yelled, shaking you again.
'What's happened?' Rhysand landed next to him, blanking when he saw you in Azriel's arms, bleeding to death. How many times did this have to happen? How many times would you throw yourself into danger?
'She's my mate,' Azriel repeated. He tested it out loud, speaking it to the mother. How cruel was she? to give him this then try to take her away. Well, the mother wouldn't get that chance. Azriel would fight her if she tried to lay a hand on your life.
'What?' said Rhys.
'My mate,' he all but growled as Rhys got closer.
He put a hand on the back of Azriels neck, a hand on your head. 'We have to save her, Az.' he knew all about mating of course, knew that Azriel wanted nobody around her. But this was too save her. 'She's my sister too, the last sister I have. I care about her to.'
Azriel wanted to throw a thousand insults his way but refrained. If not because he was high lord, but also because you were dying.
They got you to safety, Azriel carrying you through to a tent.
'Y/n?!' Cassian rushed over, seeing you in his brothers arms, bleeding out and unresponsive.
Azriel pushed past him, setting you down on the bed. 'Get everyone, every healer now.' He had no idea who he was trying to demand, but he couldnât watch this, couldnât see you in.
You were still in your bed. Behind him, Feyre rushed to her mate, wrapping her arms around his torso as your brother stared at you in muted horror.
Azriel was leaning over you, sitting on the edge of the bed. âSheâs my mate.'
'What?' Said Cassian, âShe told you?'
Azriel felt the world stop around him. Not did you know about the bond and hadnât told him, youâd told someone else? Cassian? His hand stilled in brushing your hair back, his shadows coaxing you instead.
Rhysand spoke what Azriel wanted to scream. 'You knew?'
'She-She told me,'
Azriel had always had an iron fist control on his emotions, as relied on to be spy master, he had to. But his patience was hanging on by a thread. You were still bleeding out and nobody had come and Cassian knew. Cassian knew about his mate before he did.
His shadows caressed you and, leaving you in the coolness of their touch, he leapt up, marching around the bed toward him.
Rhys was quicker, a hand on Azriels chest to stop him. 'Calm, brother.'
'Calm?' He seethed. 'When-how long have you known?' He shouted.
Cassian breathed out, pushing his hair back . His wings were tucked in behind him. 'She told me, before she went under the mountain.'
Even Rhysand let him go, blowing out air and throwing his arms over his head as Feyre gasped.
Azriel stumbled, a hand to his chest. His shadows were divided between him and caring for you. 'Fifty years,' he gasped.
Youâd known for fifty years- possibly longer and hadnât said a word.
He was panicking, his breath escaping him. His shadows settled uneasy around him. And the only person who was capable of calming him was laying unconscious.
Thesan burst in, knowing the injured already and working on you quickly.
Azriel almost launched at him, just for touching you. The reasonable part of him knew he needed to touch to heal, but the part that was your mate wanted him dead.
Cassian held him back, physically.
Azriel glowered at him. 'I wouldnât touch me if i were you, brother,' he practically spat the words.
Rhysand left Feyre with a kiss on her cheek, coming to Azriel who was looking over you on the other side. 'Az, you need to rest-youâre hurt, too, remember?'
He shook his head, staring down at you. Mother above you were pale, so pale. 'I-I canât feel anything Rhys, I canât feel her through the bond.'
'My sister is a fighter, sheâll make it through.'
Azriel scoffed. His shadows were caressing up and down your arm. âDonât pretend youâve ever cared about her like a brother.'
Rhysand inhaled sharply. This was just fear, he told himself. 'Azriel.'
'No,' he said, his finger brushing back your hair. 'You only care about her when sheâs dying and all y/n does is worship you- ever since you were children.'
Cassian tried to advance, 'Azriel, you wouldnât be saying any of this if y/n wasnât hurt.'
He laughed, bitterly. 'No, I wouldnât. I wouldnât have to. Iâd bite my tongue. But your sister is dying and the last time you cared was the last time she almost died- it killed her to lose her wings and you were never there! And you teach your mate to fly right in front of her!'
Rhys growled. âDonât bring my mate into this!'
âYouâve brought mine into this!' He yelled. 'Everything she does is for you. Working for you. My mate followed you down to the mountain even when you didnât care.'
'Of course I cared.'
'Then why did she feel so alone down there!'
âHow would you know, Azriel? You werenât there!'
'Because I know her, bond or not. And youâve been otherwise occupied.'
Cassian moved between the two, holding them apart. 'None of this matters to y/n does it.'
Azriel blankes them all, settling next to you. He vaguely heard Cassian send Rhysand and Feyre away. He felt him longer before he felt him leave.
And then all Azriel could feel, was you.
âŠâË.ââžââşââ§
You felt pain first. The steady thumping of it through your body. It started in your leg, numbing it. Then, her back ached- a familiar pain you'd felt before. It sent panic through you before you realised they can't take your wings twice.
Then, it was in your gut, stinging. Just the thought of moving was hurting- aching.
There was a coldness around you, draped over like shadows. Shadows...
That's when you felt the tug that you'd neglected to feel for more than half a century.
The bond. There was finally something tied to the other end.
The shadows around you must've known you were awake as they grew frantic around you.
You opened your eyes, slowly, afraid to what you may see. Afraid to the eyes you'll have to meet.
Azriel was sat on a chair next to you, bare chested with only bandages around him. Immediately, you were at a disadvantage. He was looking at you, dark eyes pouring into yours as his hands curled around shadows.
'What happened?' you asked.
'You were run through,' he said, voice wavering.
'Oh.'
'You're my mate.'
Your eyes flickered away, staring at your tent. 'Oh.'
'That's it?' he whispered. There was some heart-break tainting his voice. 'You're not gonna say something?'
You pulled the blanket over you, daring to move to sit up. He shifted, but his shadows helped you. 'What do you want me to say, Az?'
'Why did you tell Cassian and not me?' he asked. 'Why didn't you tell me, for fifty years?'
'It's-it's not a big deal.'
'Not a big deal?' he all but seethed. 'I'd say finding your mate is a pretty big thing, y/n. It's the person to spend the rest of your life with.'
'Can we not, do this now?' you winced, as the words left your mouth.
'You're right, maybe we should wait another fifty years to bring it up when you're dying.' you've never heard him be so cruel, you'd never even argued with him before this.
'I wasn't dying,' you mumbled.
He scoffed. 'You had an infected wound in your leg that you didn't tell anyone about. An ash arrow was imbedded in your back. Imbedded! You didn't see anyone about it and then- you run into battle and get yourself stabbed.'
'I didn't get myself stabbed!' you argued, your temper rising above all other judgment. 'I didn't rush out in there, wanting to die!'
'I held you as you bled out!' he yelled, standing up from his seat. You were swinging your legs over the bed, ignoring every twinge in your body. 'Do you have any idea what that's like? Not even to hold you as you die in my arms the first time but the second. And to know this time, I was holding my mate?'
You bit down on your lip. He had to use the word with such care and love even when angry. You could feel it. For once, guessing his emotions wasn't needed as you felt it all. The taunt anger in him, the pull of anxiety and above all else, the weight of his love.
Azriel walked around you. 'Please, you have to tell me. Why didn't you say something to me? Why wouldn't you tell me you're my mate? Am I that repulsive to you?'
'What?'
He gulped.
You shook your head as he knelt in front of you, shadows pooled around the two of you, as if they were trying to hold the two of you together. You took his hands, holding them and let something like love flow down the bond. 'You are the most beautiful thing in this world. Something better than me. I wouldn't burden you with that.'
He rose his gaze to you. 'Burden me?'
'Do you think i've enjoyed lying to you?' you ask, finally finding your words. 'Do you think I've liked being your mate and never being with you? That I left you for fifty years and thought of you every moment of every day, all day long. That when I come back I wonder if you or Mor had grown closer? Or if Elian would finally tell you how much she loves you? It's been eating me alive. But it's a small price to pay.'
Azriel grasped at his words, chocking on them. 'Elian is nothing to me, nothing.'
You pushed yourself up, using his shoulder to steady yourself before you move around him. 'Why? Have you only just decided that because Iâm your mate? Thatâs not how it should go, Azriel.'
He was following you around your tent as you slipped on armour and leathers over your night dress. âI want you, only you.'
'Because of the bond?'
'Because Iâve always only wanted you!'
You laugh. 'No, you havenât.'
'If weâd talked about this maybe fifty years ago youâd know that!'
You shook your head. Perhaps a part of you didn't want to believe him and all those wasted years at your fault, but you didn't want to believe his words either. Because what did that mean? That he loved you and wanted you. But that seemed just as impossible to you. How could he want someone so wrecked who'd done nothing but run away from her feelings and does nothing to make anyone happy?
'I don't want you to feel like that,' said Azriel, approaching her. She thought she'd spoken aloud before she realised he could feel everything that was hers. She'd only ever had to shield her thoughts from her brother- and he rarely sort her thoughts. 'Please, please-' he took your shoulders, turning you around and gently resting his head on yours.
You could feel his warm breath over your lips. You almost lost all resolve, with him that close. You'd never been so close to him, close enough to touch. To kiss. To know finally what it mean to have that deep connection that everyone was meant for.
One person in the whole world to belong to.
And he was stuck with her.
'Azriel-'
'Whatever you're thinking about yourself, i've thought about me a thousand times. And ever since we were kids you've always stopped me from thinking that. You've always told me what I was worth,' he whispered. His hands were wondering down your arms, sending shivers down you. He could've been doing it on purpose, distracting you. 'Why won't you accept it for yourself?'
You gulped down every uneasy thought. 'Because you're good, Az and i'm-'
'You're everything.'
'I'm not,' you look up at him, his own face blurry from your tears unwilling to fall. 'I'm not a fighter, i'm afraid of pain. And I could never be a leader, because i'm scared of losing people. I'm terrified about it half the time. Why do you think I followed Rhys down to that stupid party that I knew I wouldn't come back from? Because he'd do the same for me? We both know he wouldn't. But what would losing him mean for you? or Cass, or Mor? I was a coward and I wanted to hide from all the pain his leaving would have caused.'
Azriel shook his head, words sinking in. You were comparing yourself, to warriors like him and Cass, to the high lord- your own brother. 'It was unbearable without you. Maybe if it was just Rhysand i'd have still been able to be spymaster, because that's what he needed. But when I realised you'd gone to, it ruined me,' he admitted. 'I didn't care what you would've wanted, because you weren't here to tell me.'
You rub at your forehead, the tension creating a pain in your already aching body.
'And to anyone who made you feel inferior or worthless, i'll kill them,' he said. It was a shine of the real Azriel. The one who made a promise and never broke it.
You smirk. 'Can't kill the high lord.'
'No,' huffed Azriel, like it was a mild inconvenience. 'But I sure can punch him in the face.'
You laughed at that and Azriel smiled. He'd cracked you.
But your amusement dropped quickly, he felt it like a penny dropping. He let go of you as you turned away, wiping at your eyes. He didn't want to see you cry, didn't want to be the one to make you upset. He only wanted to make you feel loved.
'This isn't how I wanted this to go.'
Azriel suddenly felt conscious of himself. Maybe this wasn't so much about what you felt, maybe it was more about what you felt toward him. 'You really hate the mating bond that much?'
You look over to him. 'Being your mate is my greatest honour. But I don't want you to love me just because you have to.'
'It's not that-'
'And I know you're gonna keep saying that.'
'Until you believe me,' he assured her. 'Even if I have to tell you every day until I die.'
'I can't ask you to do that.'
He smiled at you, a heart-breaking smile of love. 'You haven't.'
You open your mouth to say something, but you're interrupted by Cassain poking his head through the tent flaps. The rest of his whole body was hidden, only showing his bronze face and hair framing him. There was a sheepish smile on his lips.
Azriel huffed. 'Cassian.'
'What? It didn't sound like much love making going on.'
'Mother above,' you sighed.
'What?' whined Cassian. 'I'm just saying, didn't sound like I was interrupting anything.'
'Personally I didn't know he was capable of saying that many words,' said another voice, familiar and dull. Nesta.
You frown. 'I'm sorry, is the whole camp out there.' You storm out, without Azriel to stop you.
He let you get away, again, and now there was no way he'd get you to accept the bond until the battle was done.
âŠâË.ââžââşââ§
The next time you and Azriel spoke, the war was over.
Elian had stabbed Hybern, Nesta had delivered the killing blow, to the head. And your brother had died.
For those few minutes of his death you wanted Feyre weep for him as you stood paralyzed, unable to move. This was the brother you worshiped, the one youâd follow to the end of the world. Did he know that when he went where you could not follow?
Feyre had done everything she could, she begged for his life back. And when her wish was granted, you were collapsing on his other side. Tears of joy in your eyes that Rhys wiped away.
Your family, safe.
Everyone seemed happy to return to Velaris. Home. Scars were left over everyone, fears and pains. Some wore them better than others.
You'd thrown yourself into life. And avoiding Azriel. Suddenly there were many friends you'd neglected that you needed to take dinner with, or so many spontaneous Rita nights with Nesta.
And none of it escaped his notice. The steady thump of the bond still thrived inside of you, his shadows followed everywhere you went, even loitering in your room.
If he was doing it in an attempt to annoy you, then you weren't gonna break first.
After a particularly harrowing Rita's night, the only thing you wanted to do was sleep in for the rest of the day, hide away from everyone and everything. Call it your coping mechanism.
Alas, there was no peace as your curtains were thrown open, light spilling in and burning through your eyelids.
'Knock it off!' the shadows had never bothered with waking you up before- it seemed they'd picked the worst time to start.
'We need to talk,' said a voice that certainly wasn't a shadow.
Rhysand.
You groan, rolling over. 'Can't you talk to me when i'm not hungover.'
'And when would that be, sister? you're getting as bad as Nesta.'
You throw your pillow off and at him, but he dodged it easily and with a smug smile. 'I hate it when you call me that.'
'What? When I compare you to Nesta? Clean up your act then.' He stood over your bed, his arms folded over his chest.
You glare at him. 'I meant sister.' You shuffled up, brushing your hair back.
Rhysand frowned and perched himself on the edge of your bed. There was something he wasn't saying, and you watched it weight heavy on his shoulders. 'You know the last time I was in your room you were throwing glasses at me and yelling at me to get out.'
'Well, don't give me ideas.'
His lips curled into a smile of amusement before he turned solemn again. 'Do you love me, y/n?'
You hadn't expected that. Your hangover could only get worse, your head swimming with possibilities as to why he was asking. And nervous, you were nervous. Maybe you'd never said you loved him out loud but surely your actions were enough of a tell. 'You're my high lord and my brother, of course.' you shrug it off, as if it was nothing.
The shadows trailed up the bed, as if sensing your anxiety.
Rhysand glanced over at you. 'Do you think I don't love you?'
You hesitate, chewing at the skin of your gum.
'Because I do. I do love you. You're my little sister, how can I not?' he muttered. 'And I didn't know you felt like that.'
'It was just sort of... obvious,' you said. 'I was never your sister, not really. I always knew that. You'd never see me like that so, I gave up thinking you would. But you're the only family I have.'
'No, I'm not,' he denied. 'Y/n, everyone in this house loves you. They're your family. And i'm sorry- i'm so sorry if my actions have ever made you think different.'
'Why now?' you ask, eyes screwed up looking at him. 'Why are you saying all this now, what's changed?'
He shook his head, strands of his hair- the same as yours- falling over his eyes. 'You almost died, died on that battlefield and I-I wasn't the first one there. Granted, it was your mate that reached you first but I, I wasn't there quick enough.'
You meet his gaze, his purple eyes sad in a way you'd only ever seen under the mountain. 'You died.'
'And as I was dying one of my deepest regrets was not calling you sister enough,' he shifted closer, taking your head in his hands as if you were a little kid. 'You are my sister. Full flesh and blood. Full love of mine. You are my family. After everything you've done for me. You were right, I needed you under there, when there was nothing good to keep me grounded, but you. My little sister.'
You were sure you were tearing up in front of him.
'You'll always be my sister.'
You laugh. 'Maybe I should get stabbed more often.'
'No,' he said seriously. 'I don't think Azriel would like that very much.'
The mention of him changed the tone in conversation, changed the very beating of your heart.
'What's going on with you two?'
'Oh, I see,' you tease, 'talk to me above sister and brotherly relations just to get in my love life. Not a good look on you high lord.'
He laughed. 'No, it's not that. I just care about the two of you, a lot. And you both deserve to be happy. And I think you'd be happiest with each other.'
You look down, twirling the rings on your fingers.
'Would it be so bad to try to love him?'
You shake your head, smiling as a tear rolls down your cheek. 'I don't even have to try. Feels like i've loved him forever.' his shadows climbed up your arm, leaving Rhysand to smile at the affection.
'You'll work it out,' said Rhys, leaning over and kissing the crown of your head.
Your door was thrown open, startling the two of you.
Azriel stood there. For his entrance, he didn't at all seem that confident when he stood in front of the two of you. His hands didn't know how to hold themselves in front of him.
Your brows rose. 'Were you listening at the door?'
'Azriel,' scolded Rhysand with a stupid grin.
'Get dressed,' he said simply to you. 'There's something you need to see.'
Without much room for argument, you kicked them both out and dressed.
You'd grudgingly let Azriel hold your hand as he led you through the woods. You'd winnowed in at an illyrian camp before he took you through it and into the woods close by.
It was the same camp you'd first met Azriel in. The oldest where you'd all become friends. You'd asked what you were doing there, but he was quiet as he led you through, helping you over roots or breaking twigs from the trees so they didn't hit you.
'Azriel, to any other girl, you leading her silently through a woods without saying anything would be a bit suspicious,' you tell him. His shadows trailed behind the two of you and his hand was secure in yours. You knew not to be scared, but you were still cautious.
'I wouldn't show any girl this,' he said.
After another half hour of walking, the two of you stumbled across a small hut. It was a tiny thing really, made out of twigs and sticks, hay and mud. It looked like something a child was capable of making.
Azriel paused in front of it. He let go of you hand and reached for the door. He was as tall as it and his wings had to tuck in tightly behind him.
Hesitantly, you followed in.
It was just as small as it looked and dirty, like it hadn't been touched in years. Cobwebs hung low (his shadows quickly tried to bat them all away for you) there was dirt and hay all over the floor. Glasses were dust filled and left around with a hundred other things. Some looked new, others old.
And yet, strangely familiar.
'I made this place,' said Azriel.
You looked back at him. He was hunched over a large box that was overflowing with things. 'You?'
'The first time my brothers picked on me, I came to these woods, working on this for days. Every time things got too much back then, i'd come here. I've been coming back for years.' he glanced at you, a sheepish look on his face. 'I've never showed anyone this before.'
You look around the place in new perspectives. The shadows settled around the place. You pictured a little Az, running here and hiding from his brothers. Did he feel alone? Did he feel un-loved? You were so enamoured by it you didn't realise he'd settled on the ground, pulling out things from his box.
'This is your glove, the one's you were wearing when we first met. You took them off to beat up some kid who was being mean to me. You didn't go back for them, you didn't even care.'
He said, pulling out a pair of red wool gloves. In spite of the hut, they were in perfect condition. Pristine. You remembered first meeting him, remembered the little soldier who'd been horrible. Those gloves wouldn't go anywhere near your hand now.
Azriel went in again. 'This is the empty glass jar of the cream you used to help my burns. Here's a book you read to me when I couldn't flip the pages myself. The notes you'd leave when you had to go back to camp. The flowers you picked for me and gave me for my birthday. Dried and stamped from every time you gave them to me.'
You stood, in shock as he kept taking things out.
'A terrible drawing I did of you when I was young. A locket of yours that broke and you never wore again. Stamps from our first theatre trip. Empty bottles from our first night together in Rita's- and Cassian's too. A letter you wrote to me when I was on a mission. A black ribbon from your hair, you used to always wear it with these things. Honestly, the amount I have in here,' and he pulled out several, of varying shades. Black, white, grey, red, dark green. All yours.
Azriel wasn't done. 'A page of annotations you did in one of Rhysand's books. A copy of your favourite poems. A coaster from the first time just you and I went to dinner. Here's some stones from when I first taught you to skim them. A quill that I used to use to write you letters. An old ring of yours is here too. Here's the first dagger you got me. It's too precious to me to be used to kill.'
Tears were falling down your cheeks as you watched him pull them all out and explain them in depth. There was more but the sight of it all was becoming blurred through your tears. The bond felt heavy and beautiful in you.
Azriel finally put the box down and fell to his knees in front of you. His hands came around the back of your thighs, holding you there as his eyes looked up into yours. 'Don't you ever think I don't love you, when I have loved you since we were eleven years old.'
You stutter on you breath. 'H-how?'
He rests his head on your stomach, looking utterly at your will and completely in love. 'How could I not?'
Slowly, as you could not move too fast, you settled down on your knees across from him. His hands moved up to your arms as yours went to his cheeks, brushing back his hair.
'It was always going to be you, wasn't it?' you mumbled. 'How could it be anyone else?'
Azriel kissed you then, finally. His lips were as soft as they'd looked, as you'd always imagined. His hands drifted to your waist, finger tips digging into to hold you close. His hands were strong, but his lips were gentle. He pulled away, only to groan in need before reaching for your lips again, harder, desperate.
His teeth bit down on your bottom lip, tongue sliding in to feel every corner of your mouth as his hands wondered around you, trying to grip onto any bit of you he could. Your arms wrapped around his neck, bringing him closer. Close enough to consume, to breath in.
You pulled back enough to catch your breath, arms still around his shoulders. 'Mother above, am I gonna make you the best meal of your life.'
But that could wait. For now, you'd settle for a dusty floor in the little house in the woods.

Azriel x Reader angst â smut
based on this request
warnings: smut below the cut, exhibitionism
âHave a good night,â you murmured to Feyre, pulling away from her hug as you gave one final wave to the other females in the room and turned in search of your mate.
Cassianâs deep laughter boomed from the drawing room, and you smiled as you followed the sounds of his and Rhysâs sounds of jest, sure that was where your mate would be as well.
âA threesome?â Azrielâs voice cut through the room, stopping you in your tracks. Heart pounding in your chest, your cheeks flushed with deep embarrassment as Azriel continued.Â
âYou think she would be interested in a threesome?â he asked again, incredulous at what seemed to be Rhysâs suggestion by his response.
âIâve offered the idea to Feyre before - itâs certainly an option to spice things up if youâre bored,â the High Lord purred.
Chest caving in on itself, you could feel the weight of your heart crumbling inward at everything youâd overheard. The thought that you werenât enough for your mate brought tears to your eyes, guilt and worry wracking through your body.Â
Azriel was the first and only person you had ever had sex with, but heâd never made you feel insecure about it until now. Biting your lip in an attempt to hold back the tears that threatened to fall, you made intentionally loud steps towards the drawing room and listened to the conversation stop.
Peering your head around the doorway, you forced pleasant smile as you tried to look at Azriel and failed, gaze falling to focus on the siphons at his shoulders instead.Â
Willing your most even voice, you managed to ask Azriel if he was ready to go home in what you hoped was convincing calm. With a subdued nod to Rhys and Cassian, you turned away from them without waiting and exited to the balcony.
The cool night air was a balm against your heated cheeks, damp lashes drying from the gentle breeze. âIs everything alright?â Azriel questioned softly, a scarred hand resting gently between your shoulder blades as he came to stand behind you.
âFine, Az,â you eked out, granting him a curt nod before turning to help him lift you into his arms. âIâm just tired,â you lied, and while Azriel sensed it, he said nothing before holding you to his chest and shooting into the sky towards home.
Days passed with the same tension, Azrielâs very touch reminding you of how unsatisfying yours was to him. You curled up on the far side of the mattress at night, cold sending shivers down your spine despite the heated hazel gaze at your back, silently begging for answers to your avoidance.Â
But each time those golden eyes found yours and you found yourself yearning for Azrielâs touch, you were quickly drawn back into yourself and your apparent inadequacy. If Azriel would not talk to you about his desires in the bedroom, then you wouldnât speak to him about what you had heard.
A week passed of the same routine - mumbled pleasantries and cold bedsheets - when you stood before the mirror, applying the finishing touches to your makeup before family dinner at the River House.
âYou look beautiful,â Az murmured shyly from where he stood in the doorway. For a spymaster, he was incredibly clueless as to what heâd done wrong to deserve your distance this week. âAre you alright to go to dinner? We could stay here and talk, just the two of us.â
Biting back the bitter laugh that threatened to bubble out, your eyes slid to his through the reflection of the mirror. âNo, Azriel, Iâm perfectly happy to go to dinner.â
Your shoulder barely brushed his arm as you twisted through the doorway, slipping outside without bothering to see if he followed. Stepping into the cool evening breeze, you found only a moment of relief before the realization hit you that Azriel would need to carry you to fly.
With a frown, you looked over your shoulder to see your mate watching you with amused interest, hands tucked into his pockets as he shifted his wings playfully.Â
âSince youâre so intent on avoiding me, do you intend to walk to dinner? It should only take you a few hours... I could save you a plate,â he teased, mirthful eyes glittering in the glow of the setting sun.Â
âOr, you could let me fly you there?â he asked, arms outstretched, a satisfied smile stretching across his face to match as you begrudgingly stomped toward him and looped your arms around his neck.
âThereâs my girl,â he murmured, warm breath fanning your neck in a way that reminded you just how untouched you felt. Warm hands wrapped around the back of your legs, and you were lifted effortlessly, cradled into the toned heat of Azâs chest.
Taking off into the sky, Azriel loosed a defeated sigh when you turned your head away from him once more and opted to focus on the burning embers of the sun sinking over the mountains.Â
With the River House in sight, the tension in your body only grew as you were forced to remember last week - the malesâ conversation that was the very reason for your current ire - unsure how you could put on a normal facade for this dinner.Â
Setting you down gently on the grass, Azriel tucked his wings in behind him, but as you turned to head into the house, his hand wrapped around yours in silent request. âPlease talk to me,â he pleaded, voice rough with unspoken emotion.
Turning over your shoulder, you felt his guilt - and furthermore, his need - through the bond, striking you dumb. Gaze focused on you, touch hot against your own, you nearly caved to your desire for Azriel right there when the front door swung open.
âCome on in, weâre waiting on you!â Cassian hollered from the entry, effectively shattering the building tension as you recoiled into yourself once more.
âCome on, Az,â you muttered, locking your fingers with his as you plastered on a fake smile and led him into the foyer where Rhys and Feyre stood smiling.
Giving them each warm hugs, you feigned a pleasant manner as best you could before wrapping an arm around Azrielâs bicep - the most eager you had been to touch him all week - and his eyes flickered with something like anger at the motion.
âExcuse us, we need to have a talk,â Azriel growled out, his attempt at remaining civil much weaker than yours as he pulled you back towards the same drawing room youâd overheard him in last week.Â
âGo ahead and start eating without us,â Azriel called over a shoulder, just before Cassian and Mor could voice their complaints.Â
Shadows swirled around you, pushing the door closed with a click as Azrielâs arms caged either side of your head. âYou can be angry with me all you want - I wonât stop you from processing whatever you need to feel in your own time - but we will not fake this relationship. I wonât pretend like everything is fine when it isnât, and touch you in front of my family when you havenât wanted to be near me all week.â
Your heart tumbled at his words, guilt weighing on you at the thought of showing your mate love that was anything less than the pure adoration you felt for him. But those feelings were quickly quelled as you remembered where you were, and your fierce gaze lifted to the shadowsingerâs.
âYou wonât be âfake,â is that it?â you taunted, chest heaving at the sheer anger you finally released after bottling it up for too long. âYou wonât touch me in front of your family, because cauldron forbid they know something is wrong, but you would talk to your brothers about our sex life?â
Confusion flashed across Azrielâs face before shifting to anger that matched yours, his hands flexing against the wood behind you in an attempt to leash his ire. âWhat are you talking about?â
With a disbelieving scoff, you gestured dramatically to the room where heâd sat last time you were here. âI heard you, Azriel. Last week at dinner, you asked Rhys and Cassian if they thought I would be interested in a threesome. You never mentioned that to me, never even hinted that you might be âboredâ like Rhys said. You couldnât talk to me, but you could talk to them?â
Your voice broke on the last words, too hurt to speak anymore. How could you trust your mate if he told others you werenât good enough, and wouldnât even tell you?
âHey,â Azriel murmured, his voice much gentler as scarred hands cupped your cheeks, thumb wiping at a stray tear that had escaped. With a deep sigh, Az bent to press a kiss to your forehead, resting there for a moment as he gathered his thoughts.
âMy brothers are idiots,â he growled. âRhys and Feyre like to bring others into the bedroom on occasion, and he was only teasing that theyâd be interested in joining us.âÂ
Pulling away, Azriel looked down at you with an intensity that made your legs feel weak, one hand tucking under your chin to tilt your face to his. âI have never, ever found sex with you to be boring.â He couldnât help the small laugh that escaped him at the thought.
âWe were made for each other,â he whispered, lips hovering against your own. He released your chin in favor of sliding his hands down your body, resting on your waist where his thumbs rubbed soft circles against the fabric of your dress.Â
âYou make me feel like nothing, no one, ever has before,â he breathed, the scent of your combined arousals dizzying. Your head fell back against the wood of the door, legs parting in silent plea for more of his touch that youâd been missing.
âIâm sorry, Az. I should have asked you before assuming,â you apologized, lips capturing his in a messy, quick kiss. âAnd now that youâve explained, Iâm not upset if bringing in Rhys is something youâd like to talk about.â
Shadows swirled erratically over Azrielâs shoulders, grip turning firm on your hips. âI am not interested in sharing you with Rhys, or any other male, for that matter,â he ground out, body pressing yours firmly against the door. âBut since Rhys is so interested in our sex life, Iâm happy to show him how not-boring it is.â
A knee pushed your legs open, scarred hands lifting your hips to settle your heat across Azrielâs thigh while shadows bunched your dress skirts up to your waist.Â
âI want you to be loud for me, love. Let them hear those pretty moans,â Az murmured against your neck. Onyx waves tickled your skin as warm lips tracked down your jaw, neck, chest. Pushing down the straps of your dress, he groaned at the sight of your breasts as they sprang free, skilled fingers teasing and twisting your nipples in tandem with your hips rolling needily against his quickly-dampening pant leg.
âPlease,â you whispered, hands struggling to find purchase in your mateâs hair. âI need you now.âÂ
âAs my mate wishes,â Azriel murmured, undoing the ties of his pants before lining himself up at your entrance.
Cock rubbing through your slick folds, you mewled at the feeling of his tip brushing your clit, breathless as your lips parted at the stretch of him slowly pushing inside of you. Azriel held you suspended against the wall, his length speared impossibly deep inside of you while shadows roamed your body, cool wisps of air teasing places only they and their master knew.
âYou are so beautiful,â Azriel whispered, chasing your lips with his own as he pulled out slowly, only to thrust sharply back inside of you.Â
A moan tore through your body, hand flying to your mouth instinctively to muffle the obscene sounds. Eyes gleaming with feral delight, Azriel tutted in disapproval.Â
âI told you, I want everyone to hear those pretty noises,â he teased as dark tendrils wound around your wrists and pulled them taut above your head.Â
âDonât hold back,â was his only warning before Azriel started pounding up into you, knocking the air from your lungs as you bounced limply on him, the pleasure too much to think of anything else.
You couldnât hear so much as feel moans and mewls leaving your throat, raw sounds of pleasure echoing through the space as you neared your climax. Back bowed against the wooden door, your eyes shuttered at the feeling of Azrielâs thumb on your clit, sending you spiraling into a blinding orgasm.Â
Legs shook, and you thanked the Mother for a strong mate who held you as the last of your high wracked through your body, leaving you weak and satiated. Azriel moaned, sweat lining his brow as your mateâs cock twitched inside of you, warmth flowing into you when he hit his own high.
Sweaty limbs tangled with each other, euphoric smiles plastered on both of your faces while you collapsed to the floor in Azrielâs arms.Â
âYouâre right,â you whispered softly against his chest. âI donât know how I believed that could be boring.â Azriel laughed loudly at that, his hand affectionately threading through your hair as he pressed his lips to your head.
âNo, I canât imagine ever getting tired of you,â he swore, voice soft as velvet. Slowly, you both stood and pulled on your clothes, giggling at your weak attempts to look presentable - everyone knew what you did, after all.
Walking back down the hall to the dining room, you turned the corner to find everyone at the table staring at you with varying levels of shock and amusement. Azrielâs hand found your lower back, your mate the picture of nonchalance as he guided you to your normal seats and began loading your plates with food.
You looked around to see they hadnât eaten much, eyes flicking to Mor who swirled her wine across the table. âYou havenât started eating?â you questioned softly, reaching for your own glass of water.
Red lips curved into a wry smile. âNo, I donât think many of us have the appetite anymore,â the blonde teased, arching a brow as honey eyes flicked between you and Azriel.
Cheeks flushed with embarrassment, you struggled for words when Azriel spoke up for you. âWell, we have worked up quite the appetite,â he drawled, sending you a wink that had the table laughing and silverware chiming as everyone continued with the meal.
Pulling apart a piece of bread from your plate, you felt a warm, familiar hand slide dangerously close along your inner thigh. The scent of cedar and mist invaded your senses as Azriel leaned in, lips brushing your ear.Â
âMake no mistake, I will be having dessert when we get home,â he teased, squeezing your skin softly before turning back to his food.

Escaping | Azriel x High Fae
summary: Azriel carries his mate off to a much-needed picnic, away from her duties at the Court of Dreams.
word counter: 3.2k
warnings: none, pure fluff, Az being a simp for his woman, mentions of reader being an empath/reader having empathic abilities, Azâs pet names being always accompanied by âmyâ (bc he needs to remind himself constantly that sheâs indeed his), reader is part of the Night Court ever since
authorâs note: This is also my first time writing anything for ACOTAR, so please be gentle with me, but I just had to, okay? Az deserves every ounce of happiness I can offer him. Also: This is my first time writing and uploding anything in a minute, so this is definitely not perfect
Dividers are made by @enchanthings and @sweetmelodygraphics <3
He had planned this little escape for weeks now, always trying to find the perfect moment to whisk his mate away between duties and obligations, only to grant her and himself a much-needed break from quite literally everything. His shadows had been restless ever since, just as their wielder, the growing stress and frustration traveling along their strong mating bond only a figment of an indication of how she grew to feel every morning she awoke to tend to the court and their cause to protect and free Prythian in the War looming on the horizon.
And today had been finally the perfect dayâdue to Rhysâ helping hand after he had seen the growing and building anxiety of his brother.
âIs it not strange how adamant Rhys has acted earlier? I think itâs weird. Do you think I should go and check up on him later? Maybe trying to ease his mind? I think I should.â Her sweet, melodic voice filled the warm air, and a rare chuckle escaped the spymaster at her fast-working mind. Gently, he took the blanket out of her arms, placing it over the arm that already carried the basket filled with all her favorites, and tenderly, his free arm found its home around her waist, pulling her closer to his side.
A perfect fit. It was as if the Mother and the Cauldron had molded them to fit just as perfectly as two puzzle pieces. Made for one another⌠He still couldnât grasp how his lifelong wish had been answered and granted after so many centuries.
Azrielâs head dipped to press a lingering kiss to her temple, his nose slightly buried in her soft strands, the soothing scent overpowering the scents wafting around them. âWill you scold me if I tell you how I asked him to give us at least today to ourselves?â His voice was soft, tender, a loving and humored edge to it. Hazel eyes began to twinkle as she looked up at him, meeting his gaze, not surprised in the slightest at his revelation, and the teasing twinkle in her eyes in return made his lips twitch into a smile. âDid you now?â She teased and nudged his side, tickling Az because she knew of every existing weak spotâthe only person aside from Cassian and Rhys. Her growing smile made him feel light, free, and still, it was the most exhilarating thing he had ever achieved in his long life; felt as if his heart might explode any second when she turned and stretched slightly to press a kiss to his jawline. Reaching further wasnât possible with the towering male walking beside her. âThank you, my love.â Only a whisper, but loud enough to travel to his ears, accompanied by the warm and fuzzy feeling sent down the bond by her.
Another pull with the arm around her waist put her even closerâif that was even possibleâand Azriel couldnât hold back the urge within him to kiss her soft lips he had already kissed so often ever since they had accepted their mating bond. Still, it wasnât often enough, in his opinion. Giving in, the shadowsinger stopped their path in the hidden passageway towards the lush green rolling hills along the coast of Velaris and slowly bent his body, letting their noses run alongside one another. âNothing to thank me for, my darling,â he hummed, lips almost already touching in the softest of kisses, and he felt her fingers run through the short hair at the nape of his neck, pulling him closer to her and letting their lips melt into one. Neither he nor she could tell where the kiss started and where it ended, where his lips began and hers ended.
The low rumble of her stomach put a pause to their antics, and Az hummed once again before entwining their fingers and continued on their path. âLetâs find a place where we can ease that growl, my darling.â
Wildflowers of all kinds surrounded the place they had finally settled onâthe glittering ocean right next to them, the rolling green hills as far as sight could reach, and Velaris in the close distance, beautiful as it had always been. Az had made himself comfortable on the blanket, the picnic basket opened right next to him, his body propped up on his forearms, and his eyes followed his mate as she strolled through the flowers. He could see her fingertips gracing the soft petals that stretched their colorful heads towards the sun, his shadows slowly, almost lazily winding around her wrist and fingers, always keeping her company, making sure she was alright. Not that Azriel minded their own ways, but sometimes he suspected they might abandon him entirely for her if they had the chanceâand the shadowsinger couldnât blame them either. He would do the same if it meant being at her side at all times.
âEat at least a bite,â he now called over to her as she picked the first flower. She only spared a quick glance at him, but her radiant smile couldnât fool him, nor could it hide the roll of her eyes. âYes, yes. Only a minute, love.â Azriel himself rolled his eyes now, but the tuck at his lips was too strong to withstand it. Not when they were alone, not when she was the cause of that rare smile sneaking its way onto his face.
So, he watched her while already eating some of the fresh berries, patiently waiting, eyes moving when she moved toward the next flower in full bloom, bending down to pick her, placing the delicate thing in the soft embrace of her arm he knew wouldnât dare crush her new possession. She wasnât violent or cruel to beings who couldnât defend themselves, who didnât possess a single malicious thought in their entire body. And even for those who might commit evil deeds, she still held compassion if necessary. By the Cauldron, she even had accepted him from the very beginning of their friendship all those centuries ago when Rhys had brought her into the Court of Dreams, right after the War had been won.
A sigh left him when she finally strolled toward him in her pretty flowy dress, hair flowing in the warm breeze, her smile growing the closer she got to him. âWhat am I supposed to do with you, hm?â Az had pushed himself from his arms into a sitting position, legs slightly crossed, an arm resting on his muscular thigh, while the other reached for her, enveloping her fingers as she sank onto the blanket and pressed a kiss to her knuckles. The sound of his wings stretching and rustling behind him accompanied her adorable chuckle, and he almost melted at the sight of her shining eyes when she pressed his scarred palm against her cheek, her lips leaving a warm mark on it, letting him forget about the pain of the past in an instant.
She had that power over him.
âAz, you had more than four centuries to get used to my antics.â Grinning, her lips pressed another set of kisses to his palm before letting his hand sink onto her knee, where it immediately started to wander and found its place on her thigh, squeezing it tenderly. âI should know by now, you mean?â A nod followed his question, grin still prominent on her lips, but he felt her concentration slip toward the many flowers she had sprayed over the blanket in front of her, and her soft and delicate fingers had already started to weave some of them together. âPerhaps even a lifetime isnât long enough,â he dared to hum and tease, moving closer toward her side and holding a strawberry in front of her lips. The tip of Azrielâs nose nudged her temple, and she took a bite, sighing in satisfaction. âPerhaps.â The sweet berry muffled her words, and without thinking or even considering he was prepared for it, the woman scooted closer and leaned backward, pressing her back against her mateâs strong chestâbecause he had been ready. He was always ready and always there if she needed or craved anything.
Even though the bond had taken its sweet time before it had finally snapped into place, they had been close from the beginning, a mutual feeling of closeness and understanding the root and foundation of their slowly blooming friendship. And over the decades and centuries, they had started to learn to know one another. Now, with the bond in its rightful place, it all was merely heightened; no longer a want to fulfill anything they wished for, but an urging need. So Az just knew without thinking when she needed his arms wrapped tightly around her body, his chest pressing against her back like a steadfast wall in a sea of uncertainty and fear.
His chin rested on her right shoulder, the strong and powerful wings softly tucked behind his back, granting the sunlight to kiss and warm her skin while she weaved flower after flower in a steadily growing circle.
âWhen all of this is overâŚâ The soft voice of his mate traveled alongside the warm breeze. âWhen all is over, Iâd like to leave for a while. Just⌠the two of us. Somewhere enjoying life itself, forgetting about War, bloodshed, and intrigues. Healing and growing,â she continued even softer, reminding him once again of her calm and peaceful nature, and Azriel felt how she longed for all those things after everything that had happened in the past fifty years. He didnât dare to think about all that had happened Under the Mountain when she had been forced to live there, didnât try to recollect everything she had shared with him in those days after Rhys and she had finally returned to Velaris.
All that was important was the exploding sensation of relief since she had followed Rhys over the threshold in the House of Wind, stepping out of the shadow of his broad back and came running right to him. That immaculate sensation had been his companion since that day.
Burrowing his face into the warm crook of her neck, the spymaster released a deep breath. âWhatever you wish, my darling,â he whispered against her skin, making her giggle and squirm in his grasp. âAz! Stop it, or my flower crown will be ruined!â He hid the growing smirk against her skin and nipped at one of her weak spots, making it tickle once more. âThey always turn out beautiful.â Azriel could practically feel the playful roll of her eyes at his words, and dutifully, he picked the next flower for her to weave into the growing circle before a small lemon tart found its way to her lips, reminding his mate that they indeed had something else in mind when they had left the House of Wind earlier.
The deep, soft sighing after the first bite of the masterfully baked tart warmed his heart, and Azriel didnât object in the slightest when the small cake was eaten within a heartbeat, her sweet tooth demanding even more after weeks of relinquishment because they had all been so busy with the preparations for the meeting with Prythianâs High Lords.
âAnother one?â He whispered quietly as the shadows now surrounded their legs, resting like they did. âDo we have one of these tiny strawberry cakes we had for Starfall?â Immediately, the memory of the last festivities occupied his mind as he looked for the mentioned dessert and presented it to her like an offering to the gods in his open, scarred palm. âMy Lady.â She chuckled at that and abandoned the almost finished flower crown with a gentle âThank you, my Lord,â only to take the delicate cake and took a savoring bite out of it.
âHave I ever told you how beautiful you looked at Starfall? More radiant as the starsâŚâ Azâs voice trailed off into the distance, pictures of that night clouding his mind once again. As she turned her head to look at him with that one smile entirely reserved for his eyes, he pulled back and let her kiss his lips in a heart-wrenchingly soft kiss. âYou told me that countless times, my love. Especially when you see the dress hanging in the armoire.â She grinned at that, making him almost blush. âBut do I need to remind you how handsome and dashing you looked that night? All those ladies turning and twisting their heads as soon as you walked through the roomâŚâ Even though she knew that no one could take her mate, the bitter feeling of jealousy boiled in her blood for just a second before it vanished at the glowing and warm, but also shadowy feeling of their bond, reminding her once again that they were bound for the rest of their existence.
âNo need to be jealous, my darling. There was never anyone but you, and there will never be anyone but you.â
His index finger under her chin moved her face upward to face him, skin touching skin and lips brushing over even softer lips. âI know,â she whispered against Azriel, and for a moment, she leaned her forehead against the strong line of his jaw, feeling him pressing a tender kiss on her hairline.
A rumble in the far-off distance let them look up at last, and both watched the building and rolling clouds over the sea, knowing that rain was a mere thought away. But still, they took their time.
Az continued to feed them both, watching her tirelessly weaving flower after flower into the crown, humming a tune they had danced to countless times by now and savoring the warmth radiating off his body. âAnother one for Elain?â Azriel dared to ask as she seemed to be done. All the flowers she had gathered were woven into a beautiful, intricate pattern, and none were wasted. His mate had started to bring Elain flowers and plants in all their forms, especially ones only growing in their lands and not behind the wall, explaining their nature, natural habitats, uses, and sometimes hidden beauty. She was so soft and gentle with the young female that Azriel had to ask himselfâmore often than not, if he was honestâif she would be like this to their children if they ever were allowed that sort of happiness.
He let her sit up and turn onto her knees, holding the crown in her delicate fingers. She shook her head, an unsure smile now surfacing on her lips, as she softly placed it on top of his dark hair. âI never made one for you, my love.â He was stunned, not daring to move nor touch the petals now resting on his head. âYou donât have to keep it, of course. If you donât like it, I can just bring it to Elain, and weâll forget about it. Itâs silly anywa-â He stopped her right then and there by pulling her close and kissing her fiercely, only holding himself back from roaring down their bond and scaring the living daylights out of her. He took great pride in the fact how breathless his mate was when Az finally ended the kiss, how gleaming her eyes were when she looked at him, how the blush that had crept to her cheeks made them glow, how her fingers gripped the fabric over his chest to steady herself. âDonât you dare take it,â he growled and kissed her once more, shorter this time, less desperate, and still tickled those delicious sounds out of her body he still kept reveling in, even after all this time.
The first drop falling from the heavens made them part, and while she started to collect their things to pack them safely into the basket and fold the picnic blanket, Azriel spread his wings to protect his mate from the mighty raindrops. When they were ready to winnow to the barriers of the House of Wind, the summer downpour had already picked up its intensity and soaked the two from head to toe. However, their laughter still lingered over their sacred space of Velaris even after they winnowed away.
Feyreâs brows creased in worry as she looked out the many windows in the palace atop the mountain, overlooking Velaris during the downpour that had been foreseen. The heavy drops splattered against the glass, making it difficult to discern any shape moving in the distance. She knew the rain wouldnât harm them, but the thunderstorm rolling over the hills induced an anxiety within her that she could barely contain.
âFeyre, darling?â
Rhysâ voice let her spin away from the windows, facing her mate who had stood from his desk he had worked on for the past couple of hours, and walked closer toward her, worry furrowing his forehead. âWhat is wrong?â He wrapped his strong arms around her body, and the High Lady sighed deeply as she sank into the embrace. âNothing, IâŚâ The first roaring thunder let her pause for a moment. âAz and YN havenât returned yet.â Violet eyes gazed out of the window, brows slightly furrowed in concentration as he tried to make out the shapes in the gloomy light of the early evening.
Then, a smile spread across his handsome face, and Feyre turned to see what had happened. âThey are now. Come, my love,â the High Lord coaxed his mate toward the door to meet the pair down the hall to greet them. She followed him without hesitation, needing to see for herself that both her friends returned without harm, and had to know if they enjoyed their afternoon, needing all the raunchy details YN would spill over a glass of faery wine and a warm fire.
They only made it atop the stairwell leading down into the hall that housed the balcony primarily used to enter the House of Wind, and the pair watched a dripping YN pulling a not-less-dripping Azriel inside, a laugh dancing on her lips.
The Illyrian shook the rain off his shoulders and wings, eyes entirely focused on the brightly smiling High Fae before him. Without a thought, he let the basket drop to the floor, not sparing a single second for its whereabouts after because his entire being narrowed down to the bond beating in his chest, demanding intimacy, closeness, with the female he desired and loved more than life itself. A shriek escaped YN between laughter as Az playfully pounced on her, wrapping her in his strong arms and lifting her off the ground in one smooth motion, moaning deep in his throat at the first taste of her lips drenched in rain droplets.
As he carried her down the hall toward their shared bedchambers in long, purposeful strides, flower crown still proudly atop his head, YN laughed: âAz, the basket!â The pair above the stairs could only hear him say, âIt can wait until Iâm drunk and delirious on you,â before a door closed, and Feyre finally allowed the giggle to escape her she had held onto for so long.
Rhys shook his head with a humored grin, pulling the female next to him closer to his chest. âMy spymaster wearing a flower crown? I wonât ever let him forget it,â he chuckled deeply, amusement and happiness dancing across his face, especially as Feyre hit his chest in warning. âDonât you dare tease him about it!â The male grinned at that, pulling her face toward him, and pressed a lingering kiss to her lips. âI canât make such promises, Feyre darling unless you are interested in a little deal with your beloved mate.â
Now, it was her turn to let a laugh freely echo through the halls.
Thank you everyone for reading! As usual: I'd love to read your thoughts and comments, perhaps you have an idea for a future Azriel - or any ACOTAR character - fanfiction you'd want me to write. Also, likes and reblogs are very much appreciated! <3

*message from Liz regarding the ending at the end*
đPeep my Azriel Masterlist Heređ
You had decided whatever you had done to offend the Mother must have been truly unforgettable and unforgivable as you sank against the wall of your family chambers in the Day Court Palace.
Being a new mother was the hardest thing you had ever and will ever do. You had finally gotten Nox down after 3 hours of fussing and tears, and now you waited. He'd sleep 2 hours if you were lucky, wake up crying, and you'd start the process over.
You had wished for your mate more times than you could count, but that bridge was long gone and burned. He had ensured of that by not coming when you wrote him, by not even bothering to write you a response.
The last fight between you and Azriel had been ugly. Glasses had been thrown, a bottle of wine knocked over in rage, cruel words you would both have to live with ringing in your ears like a scream. 350 years. Gone. Thrown away like garbage. All for Elain.
Selfish, plotting, destructive Elain.
You stood, body swaying with sleep deprivation setting in before sitting at the table where your now cold food set. You were too tired to eat, choosing to instead drink the water you had been desperately craving 4 hour ago.
You had wished you could turn it to wine, drink it with no consequences, and still feed Nox when he woke, but that was not the reality of the world. So, instead, you allowed the room temperature flavorless beverage to slide down your throat before moving like a ghost to the couch. There was no point in getting comfortable in your own bed. You would have to be up soon anyway. It wasnât as if you had help.
You were alone.
And that wasn't even the most painful part of it.
The most painful part was setting in doubt. The growing disbelief that you weren't capable of this, that Nox deserved more, that you should have dropped him at the cabin you had no doubt Elain had moved into, leaving him with her and Azriel to allow you to-
You cut your brain off, refusing to put those words into a full thought. Refusing to believe that your disappearance or death was better for your son than this.
This had to be enough, you had to be enough, because Gods if it wasn't and you weren't, then what truly was the point in living any longer.
Helion entered your chambers the next morning, eyes falling to where you were sat on the floor, shoulders shaking as sobs tore through you. He placed a large warm hand on your shoulder before taking Nox from your arms. "I know I can not offer much of a break due to his feeding cycle, but when is the last time you ate a hot meal, y/n?"
You shook your head. He was 2 weeks old. You supposed it had been before labor. Since then, it had been moments begging for just a second of deep sleep. Moments begging for the Mother to help you, to guide you. Moments where those prayers went unanswered as if they were just thrown into a void. "I don't remember."
Helion could have killed Azriel for you, for Lucien, for Nox. He almost had when you had winnowed yourself here, collapsing in his arms from the exhaustion magic and a growing babe had caused your body.
You hadn't known when you came to the Day Court, begging your oldest friend for a week of safety and healing that you were pregnant, but the High Lord had scented it the second you appeared.
It left him wondering how the hell Azriel hadn't.
"Let me hire a wet nurse for you," he offered again, knowing you would turn it down since your depressive state had you hyper fixated in this belief that all you were good for now was your breasts, and if you gave that duty away, what purpose did you have? "At least for the next few hours. To give you time to rest?"
You still shook your head, messy, tangled hair trying to sway. "I can't. I can't burden someone else."
Helion turned his head away from you, willing himself not to cry at the emptiness of your voice, at the lifelessness you had become.
"The Night Court and Spring are coming today," he started slowly. "I am the magic selected neutral ground for Tamlin and Rhysand to begin setting a peace treaty and trade routes." He waited for your reaction, almost breaking further as you gave him none. "Do you want to see any of them?"
"Lucien and Tamlin."
Helion felt his heart shatter for Cassian, the male who had been asking about you for months now. "The general-"
"Is Azriel's brother. And probably has taken his side. Attempts to see me are probably to give him some sick sort of satisfaction."
He dropped the subject immediately. Nox was asleep, content in the High Lord's arms. "I have time before they arrive, go nap." Helion ordered it, eyes blazing a soft gold and forcing you into submission.
Your bed had never felt so soft.
Helion was walking with Nox around the Palace, smiling and cooing the little male. He was always content when he was being held, and you were so deeply asleep you hadn't even noticed Helion holding the boy to your chest as he nursed. He walked towards where Lucien and Tamlin were.
His son, his pride and joy, looked just radiant in his Day Court attire. The soft, off-white pleaded fabric draping him showed the new healthy build he had gained since Azriel and Elain's transgressions, a golden snake wrapped his bicep, new golden earrings adorned those many piercings.
Lucien paused, a look of concern etching his face when he saw Nox before shaking his head rapidly.
But it was too late, Helion was already in the room where Rhysand also stood with the Inner Circle. The Lord of Night's face fell as he looked at the Illyrian boy, looking so happy up at Helion as he dozed off.
Cassian had frozen, mid sentence with Nesta. He had tried to take a step, wanting to see the babe he immediately knew was his nephew. His eyes met Helion's pleading with permission to approach. Elain's face had paled. A mix of guilt and fear running across it before she schooled it into a faked look of hurt and sadness.
But it was Azriel's face the broke the High Lord. It was a look he knew all too well.
The look of a father who missed the birth of his child.
The look of a father who didn't know he had a child.
The look of a father mourning lost time.
Lucien moved to Helion, taking Nox before leaving the room quickly. The boy did as he always did when his head found Lucien's warm bare shoulder. He released a heavy breath, snuggling into that familiar scent and warmth. "Your mother did not call for me last night," they all heard his soft voice trailing off, speaking to their nephew softly.
"You will tell me everything I do not know," Rhysand demanded as if he was in his own court. "When the fuck was he born. Why were we not informed of her pregnancy?"
Tamlin looked to Helion, digging the shit further. "Is she in the same room as last time?" The Lord of Day nodded. "I will go see her while you all deal with this."
Helion didn't answer, walking to the centered round table and taking the head seat. "To begin, Rhysand, this is my court. You will not make demands of me in my home." They all sat, aside from Azriel. His gaze was locked on the hallway Lucien and Tamlin had gone down.
If he ran, he could catch them. He could see you. He could-
The slam of hands on a table ripped him from his thoughts, and his head snapped to Helion. The High Lord was blazing, glowing like the sun itself, heat radiating from him. "Sit. Down."
An hour later and Rhysand had the bridge of his nose pinched between his fingers. "You saw her send each letter?"
Helion rolled his eyes, nodding again. "Every month after every check up and once after the birth."
Rhys pointed to Azriel. "But you never got them?"
"My son wouldn't be in another court if I had," Azriel's voice mirrored yours. Broken, empty, mourning. Mourning what was, what he had missed and would never get back. "You're sure she sent them to me?"
Helion could have snapped his neck. "Who else would have fathered her babe? You are the one who stepped out of the bonds of marriage and mateship. Not her."
Azriel paused, a sudden look of anger gracing his face as he looked up at Elain, shadows curling his ears. Nuala appeared, setting envelopes down in front of Rhysand. "In her room. Under her bed in a locked chest. Along with every communication you had tried to send to y/n, my lord."
Feyre gasped, turning her back to Elain and leaning further into Rhysand, holding Nyx tightly between them. She remembered those first few weeks. The sleepless nights, the pain, the emotional down pour. She would not have survived without Rhysand. Without Nesta and Mor. Without Cassian and you and Azriel. Her sister, the one who had held her as darkness swallowed her mind after her son's birth, had allowed you to endure this alone.
Azriel's hands shook, reaching for that stack. He separated out the letters. 10 for him. 2 for Rhysand and Feyre. 2 for Mor. 2 for Amren. 4 for Cassian and Nesta.
Helion stood. "I will let you all process this. Call for me when you are ready to do negotiations. The sooner you all leave, the better for her."
Rhysand's eyes shot up. "You won't let us explain to her-"
"Does it change the fact that he took Elain to their marriage bed? Does it change that he signed the annulment papers." Silence filled the room. "I believe that's why she left. Correct?" Rhys grit his teeth nodding. "Then all this changes is me, someone she trusts and feels safe with right now, informing her of what happened and allowing her to decide if she wants to reach out again from that point." He made a pointed look at Elain. "Which would not matter since I cannot see you removing the parasite from your court."
Helion walked into your room to Lucien and Nox laying skin to skin, a blanket over them as Tamlin held you, long fingers running through your dark hair. "And?" His son said.
"Your mate hid the letters regarding her pregnancy." Lucien whistled. "She's a snake hiding behind beautiful scales."
Azriel had tracked down your room with his shadows easily. The inner circle had been excused for the negotiations and allowed to explore the city. Cassian had flown Elain home, Mor and Amren winnowing Nesta behind them. Cassian wanted Elain out of his house, and Azriel could not have been more grateful to his brother for having his back.
He entered the room slowly and quietly. You were placing the babe in a crib on the balcony. It was shaded from the sun, shielded to remain the perfect temperature, and yet gave him access to fresh air, to the breeze.
You turned, eyes wide the second you saw Azriel. He moved to you so quickly that you could hardly process it. One second, your feet were on the ground, and the next, arms held you tight against him. Azriel was breathing deeply, memorizing your scent all over again.
He set you down, keeping you close to his chest, and sent a prayer to the Mother. "Elain hid all the letters," he began slowly. "She kept them all in her room. I didn't know. Had I known about you, about him, I would have crawled the very depths of hell to bring you back home to me."
You didn't answer. Tears fell as your body relaxed into him. It wasn't fair. The hold he had on you. The need you still felt in your bones when he touched your skin. You ached for Azriel so deeply it echoed into your bones. You longed for his smell. His voice.
Azriel took your silence as permission to continue. "I made a mistake. I will never be able to make up for it. Elain knew the second you left, I wanted to correct this. I was so blinded by her, by the feeling of being needed like that again, that I forgot how precious your independence was. How beautiful it is."
He couldn't stop himself from kissing the top of your head. "You are all I think about. Morning, noon, and night, it is always and will always be you. I am so sorry for what I have done. I am sorry for hurting you, for ruining us, for hurting the family we should be raising together. There are no words for my remorse."
"Why?" Your voice broke as you asked. "Why wasn't I enough?"
Azriel pulled back to look at you, hand raising to hold your chin and force eye contact. "Y/n, you are not at fault for my actions. You did nothing wrong. There is no partial blame, no what ifs. I fucked up. I made a mistake and it cost both of us everything. You are the victim of my actions, not the catalyst."
He saw you process those words and saw as they sunk in. "You were and are more than I will ever deserve. I want to spend my lifetime making up for it. Becoming a male you are proud of. I want to be the father I never got to have. I want to be the husband and mate you deserve. I know it will take time, and I do not expect your forgiveness today, but if you give me a chance, I will go to my grave worshipping the ground you two walk."
"Do you want to meet our son?" He broke at the question, feeling the bond opening back on your end. "This doesn't mean we're back together. It means we need to coparent for him while we work on things." He nodded rapidly, following you to the bassinet.
It felt like the world was coming full circle. You knew it would take time, that you two had many things to discuss first. This was a needed good start, though. Your pain eased slightly as you pulled back the curtains to the crib and whispered, "Azriel, this is Nox, your son."

Greedy Little Thing
Requested:
Hii just saw your blog for the first time and I'm in loveđđ. Also saw your asks are open and I strongly believe that the needy Az fic deserves a part two with needyyyy reader (begging) please please pleaseeee. We know Az will be brilliant at thissss.
This was so much fun to write. This is really just pure filth.
Technically a part 2 to this request but itâs not required!
Warnings: so much teasing, oral (f receiving), edging/ orgasm denial, some implied cum eating, creampie, p in v sex (18+), dirty talk, praise, Azriel being a little shit.
WC:3.1K
You very rarely got to see your mate dressed up. So used to seeing him in his training leathers that seeing him in anything else had you practically drooling. But seeing him in dress clothes was enough to bring you to your knees, black button down rolled up to his elbows, black dress pants that showed off his glorious thighs and ass. Your mate was hot, more than hot, he was built like a god.Â
âDid you need something, doll?â He spoke. You realized you had come into the room for something. You were going to tell him something but all thoughts eddied out of your brain the moment you saw him.Â
âYou.â The world tumbled out of your mouth without you thinking. He chuckled lightly as he noticed your stare. And just to tease you, he flexed his arms making the veins pop ever so slightly. You imagined running your tongue over them and heat pooled deep in your belly.Â
âIt seems youâve forgotten that we have plans tonight.â He was suddenly right in front of you. His finger hooking under your chin to make you look up at him.Â
âWe do?â Your voice was breathless, needy and whiny as you tried to recall where exactly you had to be that would keep you from climbing Azriel like a tree.Â
âCassianâs birthday party?â He asked more than spoke. Shit. That was what you had come here for. You needed to know where the wrapping paper went. The fancy thick ones that even Cassian had trouble tearing into.Â
âWhat time does it start?â You broke your eyes away from him to peer at the clock on your nightstand. It was just a little past 5.
âSix. And you still need to get dressed.â You felt a pout rise on your face and Azrielâs thumb popped your bottom lip. He leaned down and gave you a chaste kiss. Well it was supposed to be chaste but you got your arms around his neck before he could pull away. Teeth instantly sink into his bottom lip. He groaned and trailed his hands over your waist. He used his grip to pull you away from him, stepping back until your arms were fully extended around his shoulders.Â
âKeep that up, princess, and we wonât go at all.â
âIs that a bad thing?âÂ
âNesta will come get us herself with how much planning sheâs done.â You sighed heavily as he stepped out of your hold, your body instantly missing his warmth.Â
âGo get ready and Iâll finish wrapping his present. Since thatâs what you came in here looking for.â The bastard knew the whole time but had wanted to rile you up. Fine. Two can play that game. You spun on your heel and stomped over to the closet.
The dress you picked was one you had just gotten. Intricately cut patterns of fabric that covered just enough to be decent. It wasnât your usual color, opting to not get it in your favorite sapphire blue but instead a red so dark it was almost purple. It matched your skin tone so wonderfully and brought out the color of your eyes. You left your hair down, letting it flow naturally over your shoulder, covering the exposed skin the dress left. Grabbing the matching heels, you slipped out of the closet and headed to grab the set of bracelets Azriel had recently gotten you.Â
You struggled to clasp them, holding the delicate chain as it continued to slip out of your grasp. You gave a frustrated noise after the third attempt and went to go find your mate to help you.Â
âAz.â You called into the house. Not knowing where he was.Â
âIn here.â He answered from his study. The door was opened so you walked in, still holding the bracelet to your wrist. You held it out for him, not even looking up.Â
âI need your help.â You finally looked at him when you didnât get a response and felt the surge of lust down the bond. His eyes hungirly roved over your figure. The tight dress clinging to the plush of your breast, your stomach and thighs. He licked his lips as he walked over to you. Azriel took your outstretched wrist with a careful hand and managed to clasp the silver bracelet.Â
He placed a soft kiss to your pulse point before pulling you against him. A soft grunt leaving you as you crashed against his chest. His free hand rested on the skin of your back, left open with the low cut of the dress.Â
âI know what youâre doing, sweetheart.â He said against the shell of your ear. You fought back a shiver as his breath tickled your neck.Â
âI donât know what youâre talking about. You asked me to get ready.â Your words would have been convincing if it wasnât for the smell of your arousal in the air. Azriel peeled his hand away from you to catch a glimpse of the watch on his wrist.Â
âTen minutes.â Was all he said before he knelt down in front of you. Your hands followed him down, clutching onto him and settling on his shoulders. He was quick to sling your leg over his shoulder. Opening you up to him. He ran the tip of his nose along the center of your underwear, drinking in your scent.Â
âYouâre drenched for me, sweetheart.âÂ
âAz-â You mewled as he reached up to tug your panties to the side. Your hands slid into his hair as he flicked the tip of his tongue over your clit. Teasing the bundle of nerves with feather-light strokes. Your nails dug into his scalp, focusing on the hints of pleasure he was giving you. A breathy âpleaseâ leaving your mouth was all it took for him to unleash himself. His pace was merciless, the sounds of his lips on your mingling perfectly with your loud cries. Your legs wobbled slightly and he wrapped an arm around you. Giving you leverage to ride his face, your hips bucking in time with his tongue.Â
He had you rapidly approaching your peak. Broken version of his name falling over your lips.Â
âAz Iâm gonna-â And right as you felt that clench deep in your stomach, he was pulling away.Â
A loud cry of outrage left you as you stared down at him. Chest heaving as he placed your foot back down on the ground and stood up to his full height again. He smoothed your dress back into place on your hips, squeezing lightly as he did.Â
You felt hot all over, pulse thrumming across your skin. Words failed you as Azriel licked his lips, cleaning your glistening arousal off of his face.Â
âI-I was so close.â You whined, closing your eyes as if trying to will the feeling to come back.Â
âAnd maybe now youâll listen to me when I tell you to wait and not try to tease me like a brat.â He tapped your cheek, a silent request for you to open your eyes. âNow you can be frustrated all night while I decide if Iâm going to let you cum.âÂ
Your eyes widened at his words. âPlease. Iâll be good. Please let me cum.âÂ
He placed a small kiss on your forehead before looking at his watch again. He picked up the present and held an arm out for you. You didnât hesitate, although a little pouty, to grab it as he winnowed you to the venue Nesta had picked out.Â
The girls had spared no expense, and it was obvious as you looked around. Cassian normally wasnât one for big parties but the century birthdays were always a big deal. Nesta had turned the club into an almost intimate setting but the music thumping through the sound system had your pulse skyrocketing again. You felt it everywhere, still so worked up with not being able to cum. Azriel rubbed small circles into your back, encouraging you to relax.Â
âIâll get us drinks.â He said as he placed another kiss to the top of your head.Â
The club was still open to the public tonight, Nesta had just reserved the top floor for Cassianâs party. He would still want to dance with Nesta and she was fully aware of that. You looked around the room for the rest of your friends and quickly spotted them. Cassian's wings sticking out among the crowd. He already had Nesta pulled tight against him. You caught her eye and she pulled away from him with a cat-like smile before she focused on you. You extended the present out to her and she took it to add to the growing pile on one of the tables.Â
âYou made it.â She gave you a smirk that let you know you must not have been as composed as you thought you were. âIâm surprised with you wearingâŚthat.â She covered her laugh as you rolled your eyes.Â
âAzriel was very insistent on being here on time.â As you looked for your other friends you felt your anger rising. No one else had shown up yet, you and Az being the first other couple here. Frustration overrode the lust still buzzing below your skin until you felt Azriel join your side.Â
He handed you your drink, suddenly very grateful for the cool glass against your hand.Â
âHow did you convince them to let you decorate?â Azriel asked Nesta who merely shrugged in response.Â
âIâm persuasive.â She responded and you felt the urge to laugh at the image of her storming into the club managers office and demanding them to let her essentially redo half of the club. You took a deep sip of your drink as the rest of your family slowly started to arrive. Feyre and Rhys first, with a small mountain of gifts. Mor, Emerie and Gwen arrive next. Elain and Lucien after, and even Amren.Â
Eventually rounds of shots were poured as everyone started to get started for the night. Cassian was glowing with happiness as he danced with Nesta, then Feyre and eventually you. He spun you in a large circle as you tipped your head back laughing. He had gotten better at dancing since being with Nesta, a fact she was very proud of. He had two left feet and no rhythm before he met her.Â
The song faded into the next and you excused yourself from the dance floor to get another drink. Azriel was right behind you, hands seeming to gravitate towards your waist and back. He had left teasing touches all over skin the entire night and it was enough to have your thighs clenching together as your mind drifted to the unfinished events in his office.Â
âYou seem tense, sweetheart.â His hands going to rest on your shoulders, fingers rubbing at the tight muscles around your neck. You leaned into his touch, biting back a moan at the feeling of him touching you so intimately. He chuckled as he pulled away, a deep frown on your face. He was still riling you up, hours after and it was working perfectly. Your thighs were sticking with your arousal.Â
âAz, please.â You plead, not entirely sure what you were begging for. For him to stop, for him to pull you into the bathroom of the club and finally finish what he started.Â
âBehave.â Was all he said as he pulled you to the center of the dance floor, you drink still waiting on the bar top.Â
He pulled you tight against him as the song shifted to something slower, something more sensual. His hips dug into yours perfectly, meeting you beat for beat. Your hands were digging into the front of his shirt, clutching onto the fabric to stop yourself from melting into a pool at his feet. His hands ghosting along your waist, over your sides, brushing every inch of exposed skin had you panting against him. You pulled him down to meet your lips, a sigh escaping both of you as you did. His hands went to rest on the back of your neck, pulling you closer to him. His tongue parted your lips and he licked into your mouth. Demanding every bit of your attention.Â
You didnât realize he had backed you into a corner until you felt the wall behind you. It gave you leverage to grind your hips against him. A small part of you was satisfied as you felt his rock hard length through his pants. He pulled away from the kiss, eyes dark and pupils blown. He was matching your breathing, chest rising and falling as he fought to catch his breath.Â
You reached your hand down before he caught your wrist and pulled you away from his waistband.Â
âI told you to behave.â He growled in your ear. The sound was so perfect it made you want to cry out in frustration. You felt it everywhere. Your toes curl in your heels as you whine.Â
âAz. You proved your point. Iâll listen.â Your voice is high pitched.Â
âLook at you, so needy for me. I bet you would let me fuck you right here?â Your breath hitched in your throat at the thought. He laughed darkly at your response. âYou would, wouldnât you. My little slut, so needy for my cock sheâd let me fuck her in a room full of strangers.â He bit the junction between your neck and shoulders had a loud moan falling from your lips.Â
âAz-â He silenced you with a kiss. Hips driving into yours, pinning you against the wall. You wrapped a leg around his waist, exposing your dripping core to him. He growled low in his chest and you felt the world moving around you.Â
Next thing you felt was the plush of your large bed underneath you.Â
âYou want me that badly, princess?â He was already unbuttoning his shirt, his toned chest slowly becoming visible. You nodded, your throat suddenly feeling dry. A small slap to the inside of your thigh had you crying out a yes.Â
He leaned over you, arms caging in each side of your head. He eyed you up, a smirk plastered on his face as you panted under him. He reached out and flipped you over so you were in his lap. Straddling his hips, your heels hanging off the edge of the bed. Your hand slipped behind you to take them off but his words stopped you.Â
âKeep them on.â Was all he said before he started trailing kisses over your collarbone, down to the space between your breasts. You wanted the dress off, wiggling your hips to tell him as much. Azriel didnât hesitate. Hands coming up the zipper of the dress and pulling it down excruciatingly slow. He pulled away long enough to slip the scrap of fabric over your head, you arms raising and falling against his chest with a loud smack. He leaned back on his elbows, drinking in your figure. Your skin flushed with need, eyes wide and wild. You leaned down and started placing open mouth kisses on his exposed chest. You went to slide off of his lap before a firm hand stopped you.Â
âAs much as I would love to see your pretty mouth wrapped around me. I want to be inside of you.â You could have cried with relief at the words. But you should have known there would be a catch. He didnât waste another second before he was slipping inside of you. Hours worth of teasing making it almost too easy for him to fill you. You sniffled as you sunk down completely. Already drunk off the feeling of him.Â
His hands found themselves on either side of your hips, urging you to move at the pace he set. You own arms hooking around his neck as you pull yourself closer to his chest. YOur head rolled back until you were looking at the ceiling, body bouncing with each thrust as you could do nothing but take everything he gave you.Â
You felt that coil tightening again in your stomach. Your thighs clenching around his waist, trying to take him deeper.Â
âYouâre taking my cock so well, sweetheart. Look at how pretty you are.âÂ
You could do nothing but cling to him tighter, your moans mingling with his own groans. The room was filled with the sounds of your bodies colliding. The bed shook across the floor as he continued to drive his hips against yours, again and again. Your whole body clenched as you were about to tip over the edge and right as you went to cry out for him. He pulled out, flipping you over so you were suddenly under him. You cried out again.Â
âAz. Please.â He kissed your cheek, trying to sooth you as you reached out for him. He waited a few heartbeats before he lined himself back up with your entrance and pushed in.Â
âAre you gonna be good?â He asked. You would have said yes to whatever he wanted, anything to let you cum for him. You were nodding, voice horse from the pitch of your moans.Â
He grabbed your ankles and pushed your thighs up to meet your shoulders, driving his hips with his whole body. You felt every wonderful inch of him this way, could feel how tight your walls were pulling him in. His skin was dewey as a layer of sweat clung to both of you. Your teeth sunk into your bottom lip as your legs started to shake. Your body so exhausted already as you tried to lift your hips up to meet him.Â
âCum for me, my sweet, beautiful, girl.â He pressed his nose into your shoulder, biting down right as you hit your high. You shuddered in his arms, which tightened around you. Letting you ride out your high as his hips slowed down, grinding against you. It was only a few more moments before he was growling into your ear. HIs hips stilling as he pumped you full of his release. You stayed wrapped around him, basking in the afterglow of one of the best orgasms you had ever had. Body finally relaxing against him. He pulled out of you slowly, your releases spilling out and running down your thigh. Azrielâs eyes went right to the mess between your legs and you saw that glint of hunger that told you the night was only beginning.Â
He started to trail kisses down your stomach until he laid flat against the bed.Â
âI think I owe you more than one, princess.â And brought his lips to your folds for the second time tonight.

Could I request Azriel and Plus Size reader where theyâre both new to the mate bond and she overheard Azriel and Rhysâ conversation about the âCauldron being wrong.â She left before she was able to hear Azriel call himself a fool for even believing it for a second, knowing that heâs already kissing the ground his own mate walks on. She starts comparing herself to Elain and then starts lashing out, going to Ritaâs every night and avoiding Azriel whenever she sees him.

MASTERLIST - 1 and 2
'The Cauldron was wrong, so wrong.'
Those words played and replayed in my mind again and again, all day, every day, for the last week.
Wrong.
He said that the Cauldron was wrong- about us, about me.
Me, his mate- wrong.
It had been an accident, me overhearing them that night, a coincidence I had decided to come home early from my girl's night with Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie. Though with the Cauldron, there was no such thing as an accident, no such thing as coincidence.
I'd waded through the House of Wind, tipsy on wine and giggling softly to myself as I banged into the walls, thumping clumsily against the art pieces hanging and tripping over my own two feet. Giddy, I had been giddy, stumbling through the halls in search of him.
Azriel, my mate.
Only a few hours apart and I missed him, yearned for him, I felt the distance as if it spanned miles and the more I drank, the more I craved him. That's all I had been thinking of when I trekked through the empty halls, closer and closer to the lounge- just of my mate.
And that's when I heard it.
"The Cauldron works in mysterious ways," Rhysand's laugh drifted out to me in the corridor, and I came to an unsteady halt at the sound. "Feyre was my salvation; I didn't expect anything good to come to me Under the Mountain."
I smiled to myself, my hand coming to my mouth, shielding any sound that threatened to slip past- Az always teased that my lips loosened when I drank too much. Instead, I lean against the cold wall, warmth filling me as he gushed about my High Lady.
They were Cauldron blessed, that was clear to see.
"I think five hundred years of waiting for her was enough, brother," Cassian snorted, and I heard the faint sound of liquor pouring into a glass, wings rustling as one of the powerful males moved. "I know I never imagined my mate as a twenty-five-year-old human female, with a bite worse than mine."
I bit my lip as Cassian laughed, a loud, bellowing sound, so full of joy, so full of content, the mere memory of Nesta, human and utterly indomitable against him something that still brought him to his knees.
"The Cauldron must have a sense of humour," Rhysand teased, and I could practically envision Cassian rolling his eyes, a vulgar gesture thrown between the two males. "Connecting people in the most unexpected pairs, in the most unexpected ways."
"Like Elain and Lucien," Cass scoffs, loudly chugging back the remnant in his glass, "There's a pair I could never have foreseen, not in a thousand years."
"Proof that the Cauldron isn't always right," Azriel muses for the first time since I arrived, and my body almost croons at the sound- low and rough, moving over me as sure as if it were his hands. "She deserves better than any male friends with Tamlin, that's for sure."
She deserves better.
It was silly I knew, for the mere mention of her, the thought of her to make me feel nauseous, make my smile instantly fade, but I couldn't help it. It was hard for me to see a female as lovely as Elain Archeron and not feel inadequate by comparison.
Another who was blessed, so lovely that she had been gifted her seer abilities by the Cauldron itself as if her beauty and delicate demeanour weren't gift enough.
"Brave words, Az," Rhys whistled, and I had to force myself to blink away the picture-perfect image I had conjured of the middle Archerson sister, forcing myself to focus on their conversation instead. "Openly opposing the Cauldron."
"Brave or stupid?" Cassian counters tauntingly, and I knew he was drunk just from how loud his voice was, practically bouncing off the walls. "You think the Cauldron makes mistakes?"
"I know it does," Azriel challenges and it was that voice, that sure, quiet demeanour that I adored and desired so fiercely. I inch closer to the door, grinning at the idea of popping out and scaring them- but then he says it.
Says the thing that makes me stop dead in my tracks, makes my heart stop dead in my chest.
"Look at me and Y/N," Azriel sighs, and there's no joy, or adoration or yearning in his voice in memory of me, not like Rhys or Cass- no, there's dread. "The Cauldron made us mates... the Cauldron was wrong, so wrong."
There's a loud crack that echoes through the room, and it's that sound, and the feel of sharp debris against my palm, that pulls me from my memories. I blink through the tears, looking down at the crumbling marble sink, the corner pieces breaking off into my hands.
I sob through my teeth at the sight, small cuts leaking stark red blood down my fingers as I bring my hands to my chest. I can't see the looking- glass before me, not through the haze of tears, tears so strong it's as if I were made of them.
As if they had become a part of me.
It was all I had done the past week, cry and cry and cry- and avoid Azriel.
Every morning I skip training and breakfast, feigning fatigue or a full stomach, just so I wouldn't see him there. Each afternoon I'd get lost in the stacks and stacks of books in the library, so vast and endless that Azriel never stood a chance of finding me in the maze.
And at night I'd find solace wherever I could find a drink- Rita's, taverns, the Music Quarter, anywhere. Anywhere but at home, anywhere that I didn't have to see him.
I couldn't bear it, couldn't bear the sight of his face, even now the thought of his tilted smile, the beam of his soft hazel eyes, the touch of his scared hands and wild shadows, it made my whole body wrecked with sobs.
I couldn't bear any of it anymore- because none of it was real.
Every smile and touch, every kiss and moment where our bodies joined as one, where he confessed his love and devotion to me, it wasn't real. Azriel thought we were wrong, a mistake, a confusion, just wrong.
My hands shook as I wiped the tears from my cheeks, rougher than necessary, blood-smearing, but I was tired of tears, I was tired of crying, of feeling so unworthy. I was unworthy of him; he was beautiful inside and out and deserved so much better than me.
I sniffed as I lifted my gaze to the looking glass before me, and my heart hurt at the reflection, knowing that this was what Azriel saw, that this was why he knew the Cauldron was wrong. Every curve and roll and inch of flesh that I had, all of it, it was all wrong.
And I hated myself for it.
Wrapping my arms around myself, I take a step back and then another step, away from the reflection that taunted me, and mocked me, before forcing myself to look away. I swallowed against the dryness in my throat as I moved across the cold floor of my bathing suit, my body desperate for my bed.
And as I step over the door's threshold, and back into my old room in the House of Wind, I know it's not the same as when I had left it ten minutes ago.
He was here.
"Azriel," I gasped, halting at the sight of him- sat on the edge of my bed, his broad shoulders and powerful wings rising sharply at the sound of my voice, those hazel eyes meeting mine and filling with something honeyed and warm. "Wha- what are you doing here?"
He rises from the bed, elegant and still, his shadows dancing around him at the feel of my presence, the scent of my skin, and I shiver as he watches me, keen eyes gracing my stiff figure.
"Y/N," He sounds almost relieved as he says my name and my breath is caught in my lungs as I stay rooted to my spot, and he seems to sense my unease, as he doesn't move any closer to me. "You've been staying here for a week now; I missed you at home."
Home- the apartment we shared in town together, a cosy space that we had made our own.
Another thing I couldn't bear to face.
"I've been catching up with the girls," I say quietly, ripping my eyes from him and walking forward on numb legs. I tug at the hem of my nightshirt, his nightshirt I had stolen, feeling too bare before him and his eyes narrow at the movement. "It's just easier to sleep here when we have plans every day."
As spymaster it was Azriel's job to scrutinise, to observe and I felt every single part of that slot into place as he watched me now, watched as I moved toward the bed. I wasn't looking at him, I couldn't hold his stare- and he couldn't figure out why.
His shadows dance through the room, through the distance between us and I jolt, biting my lip when one brushes against my bare thigh- before scurrying back to Azriel in surprise. He inhales a sharp breath when his shadow whispers to him, telling him that something is wrong, I was wrong.
"I know you've been spending time with the girls," Azriel continues slowly, his voice tentative and soft as I move to the other side of the bed, furthest from where he stood. "I just feel like I haven't seen you at all... I miss you, sweetheart."
Sweetheart.
A sob threatened to rip from me at the name, so soft, so endearing on his lips and it took everything in me to not fall apart at that moment, to not crumble under the weight of it all. I shake my head, my back turned to him now and he watches as I tug back the duvet, my actions angry now.
"It's only been a week Azriel," I breathe through my clenched teeth, my tone so at odds with his and my body locking tighter at the sound of his impending footsteps. "Sometimes space can be good, it can be eye-opening, show us things we don't want to admit but know deep down."
My words hit him head-on, like a slap across the face- I don't need to see him to know it, I can tell just from the stillness in the room, the silence, so strong that even his shadows have withered.
I clench my eyes at the feeling, at the touch that strokes against my soul, him reaching out to me through the mating bond- and me slamming up every wall I have to keep him away.
"What does that mean?!"
I don't hear him until he's right behind me and when his large hand touches the small of my back, I jolt, stumbling into the bed to get away from it. I turn on shaking legs to face him, and I'm pressed into the mattress to keep the distance.
"What? Y/N-" His face pales, and I see the pain in his eyes, unlike anything I had ever witnessed from him before. It was raw, vulnerable as if five hundred years of existence couldn't hide the hurt, knowing that I had flinched from his touch, flinched from him.
A rejection- something he feared the most.
"Sweetheart, please, I don't understand," He shook his head, his beautiful face twisted into an agonised frown, and his voice trembled, weak, as weak as the hand that now reached for me, shaking as if scared to touch me. "Why won't you let me touch you? Why are you pulling away from me, why-"
He stops, and for a moment I think it's because of the tears steadily leaking down my face, the way my bottom lip trembles with the effort to hold myself together- but it's not. His nose flared, and the hazel in his eyes turned dark, narrowing down upon my hands.
"You're bleeding," He mumbles hoarsely and the pain in my chest triples when his scarred hands inch closer, my eyes fluttering shut the second he touches me, holding my palms in his and examining the small cuts. "What happened, sweetheart-"
"Don't! Don't- don't call me that, don't touch me," I croak out, my voice breaking and Azriel flinches at the cry in my voice, wings rustling when I yank my hands-free from his hold, as if his touch burned me. "Stop pretending, stop making me think you care, just-just stop."
"I don't understand, what do you mean pretending-" He pleads, his voice splintering, and I can see him thrumming with emotion, desperate to reach out to me, to hold me, but trying to respect what I had asked him. "I don't understand, help me understand what I did wrong-"
"I know how you feel about me, a-about us," I sob, my weak hands coming to my face, and I cry into them, so loud that nothing can muffle them, and I feel Azriel's' helplessness down the bond, still reaching for me, "It was cruel, to make me think-to make me think you loved me-"
"I do love you!" He snarls and my eyes snap open when I feel the familiar roughness of his hands against my wet cheeks, his grip unrelenting and needing as he draws me to him- and I don't have the strength to fight him. "Of course, I love you, why would you say that?"
His thumbs brush away the tears that won't stop leaking from my cheeks and somehow my fingers have found purchase in the material of his shirt, nails digging desperately, clutching him as tightly as he held me.
"You said it was wrong," I whisper, the words slurring in my throat, and I force my heavy eyes to his, force myself to look into those teary hazel eyes and confront him, with the burden I had been carrying alone this whole time. "You said that we were wrong, that the Cauldron was wrong."
His forehead creases, lines forming between the thick, dark brows as he peers down at me, and his hands don't release me, if anything they draw me closer.
And I see the moment realisation hits him, like ice-cold water seeping through his veins.
"I heard you talking to Rhys and Cass, you said we were proof," I gasp, feeling his shadows curl and wreath around my wrists and fingers, as if afraid to let go, as if trying to comfort me as I sniff. "You said we were proof that the Cauldron could be wrong, so wrong."
"I didn't mean you, Y/N, I would never mean you," He beseeches, his breath caressing my face, my lips and his eyes are so intense, so vibrant that I can't look away, "I didn't mean you, I meant me, I'm wrong!"
I suck in a harsh breath at his outburst and I feel it then- the self-deprecation, the vulnerability, the fear, it was all aimed at himself, it was all about him.
The silence stretches on as we stare at each other and my face must hold every ounce of my surprise and confusion, because he sighs, his forehead resting against mine. I see his wings sag behind him, as if defeated.
"I don't know how much you heard but I did not mean that the Cauldron was wrong to pair you with me," He mutters, his words unsteady, and my eyes flutter shut at his words, "I meant that the Cauldron was wrong to pair me with you- the Cauldron has blessed me but forsaken you."
"Azriel-" I gasped, and it was now my hand that lifted between us, my hand that cupped his stubbled cheek, forcing his eyes to mine. "That's not true, I'm not forsaken, I'm blessed, I'm Cauldron-blessed, Mother-blessed to have you-"
"Y/N you deserve the world, the sun and the moon and the stars," Azriel's voice breaks, a sob gurgling in his throat as he nestles against my palm, now wet with his tears. "I have spent five hundred years being unworthy of anything, and now that I have you, I will spend the next five hundred being unworthy of you."
He felt unworthy of me, he thought that he did not deserve me.
"Don't say that don't- you've given me the world and more," I shake my head, forcing every inch of surety and strength into my voice, "I love you, so much, so much that the thought of you thinking we were wrong, it killed me Az, because you're all I need."
He shakes his head against my hold, but his hands slip down my back, down my waist and to my hips and thighs, fingers digging into my flesh, holding onto my meat for leverage and pressing my soft body against his firm one for dear life.
"Not once did I ever think you were the problem, I thought it was me," His brow furrows deeper at my words, and I see the denial in his eyes, in his face, "I see a male who is beautiful inside and out, who is powerful and skilled, who has been a saviour to this Court in so many ways and I can't come close, I can't ever be equal to that Az."
"Y/N, no-" He growls, nails carving crescent moons into my flesh.
"I'm not a warrior like Nesta or a ruler like Feyre," I continue, and I open up the walls I erected to keep him out from my soul and mind, letting the mating bond flow freely again- to let him see all I had thought these few days. "I'm not beautiful like Elain... I'm not enough."
"You are everything," He hisses, and I can feel his overwhelming pain as sure as if it were my own as he graces over my feelings and thoughts- as he takes in every disgusting, horrific thing I had thought about myself, about my body. "You are everything and more to me, Y/N."
Power flashes through his eyes and then his head ducks toward me, capturing my lips in his.
Time seems to slow when his lips meet mine in a gentle collision, the kind of impact that steals the breath from my lungs, the kind I can't get enough of. Azriel grumbles at the taste of wine on my mouth, his tongue lapping at mine as if devouring the sweetness.
"Azriel," I sigh, like putty in his capable hands, and like always, he's skilled with how he handles my body, so easily turning us so my legs hit the mattress, my body weightless as he lifts me to sit on the edge.
"I have seen you navigate politics and arrogant High Lords in a way that has us all on our knees," He mutters against my lips, and I croon at the feel of his hands languishing up my thighs and hips, squeezing the flesh, his eyes dark with desire now.
His nose brushes against my cheek, so bare, as he kisses and trails his tongue along my jaw, moving down my neck and I can't do anything but moan softly as he lies me flat on my back, his powerful body towering over me, covering me wholly.
"I have seen you cut down soldiers triple your size as if they were little more than weeds in a field," His canines scrape against the racing pule-point at my neck and my eyes flutter, neck exposing for him and back arching when his hand cups my breast over my shirt.
He settles between my thighs, and he groans when his hard length brushes my wet core, the smell of arousal heavy in the air, the kind of stimulation that made us both dizzy with need. I arch my hips up to meet him, needing to feel something, anything from him.
"And I have seen males and females alike marvel at your beauty, at your body, desiring to see you without a scrap of clothing on," Azriel's voice turns furious, dark, as if the mere thought of someone else seeing me naked made him violent, honed to kill.
"Az, please," I mewl, fingers clawing at his back, feeling the muscles ripple under my touch, his shadows in a frenzy, caressing and dancing and wreathing around my body, feeding off every moan that escaped me. "I need you Az, please."
He presses long, wet kisses against my jugular and I sigh in relief when I feel his body shift, hips lifting and the sound of a belt clinking as he unhooks his slacks, freeing his hard length from within.
"I love you, sweetheart," His head lifts, face tight with sincerity and I can feel the thumping of his heart against mine, those intense eyes capturing me wholly. "I love all of you, I love all that you are-"
"Body," His fingers hook into my underwear, and I gasp as he tugs the wet material to the side, fingers brushing my clit.
"Mind," Our sounds meld as he rubs the tip of his cock against me, parting my folds, spreading my arousal from my entrance to my clit, and his breathing deepens as I whimper.
"And soul." He pushes into my entrance, stretching me just from the tip and automatically, my thighs clamp around his hips and my back arches at the feeling of him.
"I love you, Y/N," He pushes in until his long, thick length hits my cervix and my cunt is stretched thoroughly, throbbing around him. I trace my hands up his arms, nails scratching along every muscle, every strong, lean plane of him.
"I love you too, Azriel," I whisper back, and when my eyes flutter open, I see him above me and I know that nothing else, no one else could feel this right.
He doesn't move, merely staring down at me, his eyes burning like embers- feeling the thought as intensely as I did.
The Cauldron was right, so right.

Azriel: baby blanket
Azriel had never had a baby blanket.Â
When you found this out, it made you so sad you started crying (you were on your period which didnât help the emotions).Â
You were talking with Feyre and Cassian. Feyre mentioned how she found Rhysands baby blanket in their closet and couldnât get over how cute it was.Â
âIt has bats! It was so cute.âÂ
âOh yeah, Rhysâ mom made me one with swords on it.â Cassian sipped his beer.Â
âAnd Az?â You asked.Â
âAz what?â He quirked an eyebrow.Â
âWhat was on Azâs?â You asked, tilting your head.Â
âHuh.â Cassian thought. âI don't think he ever got one.âÂ
âWhat? Why?â Your heart was shattering for your husband and mate.Â
âWhen he joined the family, he was in his preteens. A little old for a baby blanket. I joined when I was a bit younger so I think thatâs why I got one.â He titled his head as he thought. âHe mightâve had one when he was with his blood relatives, but I doubt they let him have any comfort.â He grimaced.Â
You teared up. âRhysâ mom never made one for him?â
âNo, just because he was a bit older.â Cassian shrugged.Â
You frowned, âI wouldnât think of it either if I were her I justâŚâ Your lip wobbled. âHe deserves it.â
âAw shit.â Cassian got up and went to your other side. âI forgot you were on your cycle.âÂ
âShut up.â You cried, swatting his arm. Which he wrapped around you and pulled you to his chest.Â
âHeâs okay, sweetheart. Heâs a big boy.â He kissed your temple.Â
âEverybody deserves a baby blanket. I still have mine.â You bit your lip and sniffed. âI need to make Az one. He deserves it!âÂ
Feyre touched your shoulder. âI think Rhys still has fabric his mother owned.â
âCan you ask? I wanna make it and include the woman that took him in.â You frowned, âand find some way to include his mother.âÂ
âOf course.â Feyre said. She also kissed your temple.Â
Feyre later asked Rhys, who absolutely let you have some fabric. That way the blanket was from both you and Rhysâ mom. You reached out to Azrielâs mother, who helped you learn to sew. You spent hours with her. You loved doing this so you could give Azriel something meaningful, then it was better since his mother helped you learn.Â
You did a few practice runs with random squares of fabric that weren't the special kind. Just to make sure you didnât fuck up the actual project.Â
You picked out a soft fabric he loves because it doesnât cause sensory issues. You chose if in his siphon blue with stars on it.Â
When he came home after you had finished it, he was concerned because you looked like you were up to something.Â
It didnât help that you had made his favorite foods plus dessert (since you wouldnât let him eat you for dessert with your cycle going on, which he doesnât care either way for the record).Â
Then after dinner, you made him sit on the couch and close his eyes for a surprise. âAnd I forbid your shadows being sent out! So don't send them!â You yelled as you ran up the stairs to grab the surprise.
âYes, love.â As if theyâd listen to him over you in this case. Plus, heâs never seen you so excited. So no, he wasnât going to ruin it. Â
He heard your giggling as you walked down the steps and couldnât help his own tiny chuckle. He heard the crinkling of a bag as well.Â
âOkay, open your eyes baby.â You said. He opened his eyes to see his love smiling wide and her eyes twinkling.Â
She handed it to him, he could feel that it was hefty. He took the tissue paper out and threw it at you, which you giggled at as it hit you.Â
Then he saw the most beautiful blanket there. He pulled it out. It was a deep, rich navy blue. Sparkling with the night sky.Â
âDid you make this?â He whispered, his heart was already filled because his love gave him something.Â
You nodded and that caused his heart to overflow.Â
âI love it but whatâd I do to deserve it?â
âJust be you.â You said. Then he saw the tears start in your eyes. âGods, this stupid cycle. The amount of times I cried making it.â You wiped your face.Â
âCassian told me youâd never had a baby blanket. And everybody deserves that bit of comfort. Iâm sorry if this seems silly I just-â Your lip wobbled. âI wanted you to have it.âÂ
âOh baby.â Azriel cooed. Which was weird, because he was one of the most feared warriors cooing over his period-ridden wife. âCâmere.â He set the blanket down, and pulled you into his lap. Your thick thighs cradling his muscular ones.Â
You fit perfectly in his lap. He then grabbed the blanket and wrapped it around you both. For a baby blanket, it was quite large. You worked so hard. He loved it so fucking much.Â
âIâm sorry this is your gift and I canât stop crying.â You let out a wet laugh. âGods, the amount of times your mother teased me for crying.â You sniffed.Â
âMy mother?â He froze.Â
âI went and visited her a lot these past few months. She taught me how to sew. We had lots of tea and talked about you.â You teased. âI loved seeing her so much.â You whispered.Â
His heart was bursting. You spent time with his mother, his mother who you loved to see.
âBaby, this is beautiful. Youâre so talented.â He kissed your forehead. âI canât believe you made me a baby blanket. Thank you.â
He never even thought that heâd want one. Now, the only way anybody would get it out of his hands would be if he were dead.Â
âWhere did you find this fabric?â He asked. It was beautiful. As if the night sky itself was woven into it. And so soft on his skin.Â
âRhysâ mother.â You sniffed again.Â
He snapped his head to you, confused. You smiled. âI asked Rhys if there was any fabric left from her. Then I actually embroidered your mothers signature in the corner, with her guidance. So,â You shrugged. âItâs from all three of us.âÂ
âThe three most important women in my life.â He murmured.Â
He brought you into a kiss that told a thousand words. âThank you.â His voice broke off. âI canât even begin to think of how to repay this.â
âThatâs the thing Az. You don't have to. Iâm your wife, I am honored to give you something so special.â You whispered, clutching his face.Â
âYou didnât just give it. You made it. You make me so happy, my love.â He brought you in for another kiss.Â
After that night, you kept catching him snuggling the blanket. He wouldnât travel with it, it was his prized possession. It never left your house. All your family knew about it was that you made him a blanket.Â
Then, for away missions. You made him a travel size one.Â
Then for his birthday. A tinier matching one. Only with your signature in the corner opposite his mothers.Â
And, an embroidered baby footprint.

I'm Not The One For You
Azriel x Reader
Summary: Azriel has been stressed at work and decided to hit the bars with his brothers. He gets so drunk that he may have forgotten what his love looks like
Warnings: fluffy with some spicy implications
WC: 1.1k
*masterlist*
a/n: I've been writing some heavy things and needed a break. I hope yall enjoy this short fluffy piece! xx
The sound of heels clicking on cobblestone joined the myriad of sounds along the Sidra. The city was lively, and all types of music and chatter filled the crisp air in Velaris. As you got closer, the bass at Rita's was getting louder. You, Morrigan, Amren, and the Archeron sisters were glowing from the spa's lavender-scented oil and dressed to the nines. After an afternoon of well-deserved pampering and last-minute shopping, it was time to meet with the boys.
You were wearing a dark blue mini dress, the material sparkled and reflected light with every movement of your body. The black strappy heels matched with your manicure and pedicure.
You were vibrant and ready for the night out with your mate and friends. Work had been tiring, especially when it was your job to organize military exercises with other Courts armies.
Excited to step into the bar, you grinned as the music vibrated all around you. Scanning the dance floor, your grin spreads when you see your blue-siphoned mate absolutely smashed and tearing it up on the dance floor with his brothers and other partygoers. Happy to see him relaxed, you go over to the bar to order yourself a drink before joining Azriel.
Despite being known as the âquiet one,â Azriel loved to dance and party occasionally. Work had been stressful lately, so he let loose and drank to his heart's content. Females and males were coming up to him all night asking to dance with him, but he refused, and if they got insistent, heâd give them the âsorry, youâre lovely but Iâm marriedâ speech. Everyone was always respectful and backed away, after all, he was the Shadowsinger.
It wasnât even late but admittedly, Azriel drank too much, and his wild erratic dancing proved the point. His brothers and family teased him from afar, even Elain was poking fun at the drunken shadowsinger. In the corner of his eye, a female in a short blue sparkly dress approached him. Smelling like lavender, the female slid an arm around his waist and pressed her body against his.
You were about to bop to the beat of the music when Azriel stopped dancing and ripped himself away from you. The movement was so sudden, that the cocktail in your hand splashed droplets on the floor.
âAz? Whatâs wrong?â you asked wide-eyed.
âS-sorry, Iâm taken. Iâm just waiting for my wife,â he slurred as he deliberately turned away from you and started dancing again.
Startled, you looked at Cas, Rhys, and the girls and you burst out laughing. You pointed an accusatory finger toward the Illyrians.
âHe doesnât even recognize me! I canât believe heâs shit-faced this early!â you werenât mad at the boys, just highly amused.
Tapping Azriel on the shoulder, he turned, and you gave him your most dazzling smile. âI havenât seen you all day and this is how you greet me? Iâve been wanting to dance with you, love.â
His eyes run down your body appreciatively, his gaze slowing around your thighs, heâs always loved your thighs. You gave him an encouraging nod, but he was still clueless.
Bringing up his left hand, he shows you the golden band around his ring finger. âI told you Iâm married, see? She also happens to be my mate.â
You stifled a giggle and stepped closer to him. Surely, he would recognize your scent, right? You grabbed his hand and let your fingers trace the scars, he loved it when you did that.
In complete shock, he snatched his hand away after a few seconds.
âLook, youâre beautiful but Iâm not the one for you. I would walk away before my mate gets here. Sheâs Night Courtâs best warrior and Iâm afraid she wonât let you get away with you bothering me so much,â said Azriel, his lips pressed into a line.
You started laughing, your handsome mate was so loyal. You canât believe he would have sicâd you to flirty females. His family, who were listening to the whole thing, was snickering as well. Rhysand pinched his nose highly regretting pre-gaming at the townhouse, at the time it was a great idea.
Azriel squinted at his family when he realized they were laughing at him. âWhat?!â
Rhysand clapped a hand on Azrielâs shoulder. âBrother, youâre so drunk that you donât even recognize your own mate!â
Azrielâs eyes furrowed as he looked at your beautiful twinkling face, your lips forming into a smirk. Azriel tugged on the bond three times, and after a short beat, you tugged the bond four times. It was something the two of you did, the first person tugged three times and the four tugs meant that the second person loved them more. Clarity burst through his intoxication and when he realized, he tipped his head back in laughter.
Moving closer to you, he pressed his lips onto your temple and murmured an apology against your skin, this was the last time he was going to drink this much. You wrapped your arms around his neck as he placed a hand on your waist and the other on your bum. You turned to place a kiss on his cheek and then his lips.
He squeezed your body, and you pressed your lips on him again. âWhy do you smell like lavender? No wonder I didnât recognize you, I hate lavender!â
âThatâs the oil they used on our massage today,â you said. A slower song was playing so you swayed with Azriel. He held you tight as you gazed into his eyes, melting at the sight of the brown and greens melting together.
After a few more hours of partying, it was time for you and Azriel to go home. Smelling of sweat, booze, and lavender oil, the both of you opted to bathe together.
You relaxed and laid on Azriel's chest as he took the loofah and scrubbed your skin. He said he wanted you to smell like yourself again and insisted that the bath water was to be changed for the two of you to properly soak. Now that the suds smelled of your favorite soap, he pulled you against him and he closed his eyes.
âAz?â
âYes, love?â
âIâm really happy to know that even when youâre shit-faced, you wonât ever cheat on me.â
A growl rumbled in his chest, his hand splayed across your stomach and held you tighter. âWhy would I do that when Iâve got the most perfect person in the world in my arms?â
You blushed; he always knew how to make you feel loved. Turning around to straddle him, you bent down to capture his lips. Who were you to question his logic?

The Prophecy (Lucien Vanserra x Rhys! Sister)/(Azriel x Rhys! Sister) Part 2
Part 1
AN: Wow I just want to say I have been so overwhelmed by the love part one got. Thank you for all the comments! I truly cherish each one! This part is a little short, because if I end up doing two different versions (a Lucien version and an Az version) this is where they will probably split off.
If you're new here check out my masterlist!
Summary: The only thing worse than having Azriel not know about the bond is watching him and Elain carry on like she doesnât have a mate as well. Lucien and you have been long time friends but things change after one fateful starfall celebration. Itâs not wrong if both of your mates donât want you right?Â
Warnings:Â so much fluff, Angst, they be fightin'
Word count:Â 3485
âAre you sure you want to do this? We can fully elope if you want to.â I whisper to Lucien as we stand in front of the double oak doors to my brother's office.Â
At first I was confident that we had nothing to worry about. But now that I stood here, with only an ornate piece of wood separating us from the High Lord? The nerves had started settling in.
âIâm sure, an honorable male would ask your brother's permission before wedding you, and you deserve nothing but an honorable male.â he smiled, squeezing my left hand, the one his family ring currently found its home on.Â
âBut what if he says-âÂ
âAre you seriously doubting my silver tongue right now?â he smirked, cocking an eyebrow at me. âThereâs a reason I was cursed to wear a fox mask for 50 years my darling.âÂ
âBelieve me I know all about that silver tongue,â I laughed, nudging him with my shoulder as I recalled what that silver tongue did to me last night. Â
âShall we?â he asked, donning an unbothered face.Â
âWe shall,â I smiled before pushing open the doors.Â
Inside the ostentatious study sat my brother, with his mate perched on his desk beside him with her back facing us. He broke his love sick gaze on her to see Lucien and I standing at the end of his desk.Â
âSisterâŚLucien, this is a surprise,â Rhys said, fixing some papers on his desk, as if to collect the thoughts swirling inside his head as well.Â
âIâm sorry we didnât knock, that was an oversight on our part,â I laughed thinking about the thousands of compromising positions we mightâve found them in. I silently thanked the cauldron for keeping that reality at bay.Â
âI was hoping I could discuss something with you,â Lucien said regally. I was so taken back by his tone I couldnât help but look up to him, his face was nothing short of the son of a High Lord.Â
The air in the room stiffened as Feyre turned around to sit on the arm of Rhys chair, I suddenly felt like I was in a fishbowl. My brother and I had always been very close, I had shared everything in my life with him, there wasnât a story of mine he didnât know. But he didnât know about Lucien, and I wasnât sure how he would react to that.
âOf course Lucien you can speak to us about anything,â Feyre smiled warmly, placing her hand over Rhysâ as if to calm him down.
âWith all due respect Feyre this is just between Rhysand and myself,â Lucien stated with the utmost respect, yet I still nudged his foot in warning.Â
Rhys shifted in his seat a bit, placing his hand on Feyreâs hip, âAnything you have to say to me you can also say to my mate Vanserra.âÂ
This was not going according to plan.Â
âWell, you see,â Lucien looked at me and I gave him a subtle nod to continue. âY/n and I have been seeing each other for quite sometime now-âÂ
âAnd by seeing each other you mean?â Rhys interjected.Â
Lucien cleared his throat, âWeâre all adults here Rhysand I-âÂ
âYou mean to tell me youâve been fucking my sister?!â Rhys growled and I swear the mountains stirred in the distance.Â
âRhys calm down!â I shout but Feyre speaks up first.Â
âHow long has this been going on for?â Feyre asks, calmly. Her voice seemingly caused Rhys to lower his hackles.Â
âSince Starfall,â Lucien answered truthfully.Â
âDammit I owe Cassian money,â she cursed looking at the door of the adjacent room.Â
Rhys turned to look at his mate bewildered, âyou had suspicions and you didnât tell me?â he gasped.Â
âWell Cassian thought they were going to hookup that starfall but I said there was no way,â Feyre said seemingly disappointed she lost a bet.Â
âGuys?â I probe, turning both of their attentions back to us.
âWhat Iâm trying to say is I admire your sister very much Rhysand, and I would like to ask for your permission for her hand in marriage,â Lucien said, giving my hand a squeeze.Â
Feyre looked to Lucien, âBut Elain is your mate?â she asks, confused.Â
âAnd Azriel is yours y/n,â Rhys reminded me.Â
âCome on Rhys, itâs been 400 years. If the bond was going to snap it wouldâve happened by now. Azriel doesnât want me.â I say honestly, and for the first time, the words donât sting as much as they normally do.Â
Lucien picks up my train of thought, âAnd Elain has made it perfectly clear that she wants nothing to do with me.â he says to Feyre, who gives him an apologetic glance.
I look over to see Lu smiling down at me, âWeâve been spending a lot of time together, and we get along well. Iâm at my happiest when Iâm with him,â I smile back at him before turning to my brother and Feyre once more. âLucien is a good male, heâs kind and he takes care of me. I think we could make eachother really happy.âÂ
Lucien tugs on my hand to bring my attention back to him, âAnd y/n is a beautiful, smart, and charming woman. Any male would be lucky to call her his wife, including me.â his lips curl upward, and I canât tear my gaze away from him.Â
I had begged the Cauldron all my life to bring someone into my life who would choose me. I used to think that person was Azriel, but after all my years of flirting with him and trying to get the bond to snap I was only ever met with nothing. Yet here Lucien was, standing in my brother's office, saying I choose you.Â
Feyreâs voice broke my train of thought and pulled both of our attentions, âAww, Rhys they're so sweet,â she beamed grasping onto my brother's arm.Â
Just like I had prophesied, I saw my brother's hard exterior melting under the âooosâ and âahhhsâ of his beloved High Lady. He stood from his desk and I felt Lu tense beside me as we both waited with bated breath for what the High Lord was going to say next.Â
âLucien Vanserra,â he said, holding out his hand. âWelcome to the family.âÂ
The tension in the air dissipated as everyone in the room smiled, Feyre was practically jumping for joy. Lucien gave Rhys a firm handshake over his desk and I could see that while the proposal was unexpected for my brother, he wasnât unhappy. He knew just as well as I did that Lucien was a good male, that he would be good to me.Â
âOh we need to start shopping for dresses right now! Iâll grab Mor and Nesta and we can go out! Weâre going to need a cake too!â Feyre squealed, hugging me tightly.Â
âUhh thatâs the other thing,â I said hesitantly, not wanting to step on my sister-in-law's happiness. âWe didnât want a big wedding.âÂ
âWe actually wanted to elope, and we want you two to be our witnesses.â Lucien picked up my sentence.
âOh of course we will,â Feyre smiled looking at both of us before wrapping her arm around Rhys.Â
Rhys looked more troubled than he did moments ago, like the idea of an elopement didnât sit right with him. However if he did feel that way, he didnât voice it. Not when the idea seemed to excite Feyre so.Â
âWhen is the date?â Feyre inquired.Â
I looked to Lucien who was already looking to me for an answer. We had never given the date a thought. I shrugged my shoulders at him, hoping he might take the lead. His eyes twinkled with mischief, it was that same look he gave me before he did something like wipe whipped cream on my nose or use his flames to singe my bum as he slapped it.
âThe day after tomorrow,â he said with certainty.Â
âThe day after tomorrow?â the whole room gawked.Â
Lu turned back to me, âYes. Weâve never been conventional, why start now,â he gushed giddy with infectious excitement.Â
I couldnât stop the smile that spread across my face, âOkay,â I giggled. âthe day after tomorrow.â
He leaned down to scoop me up in his arms spinning me around the room, Feyreâs laughter and my own bouncing off the ornate wood paneled walls.Â
âBut what will you wear?â Feyre asked, seemingly trying to figure out something in her head already.Â
I pondered the idea myself before it hit me like a ton of bricks, âOh I can wear mothers dress!â I exclaimed looking at Rhys.
âIâm sure thatâs what she wouldâve wanted,â Rhys smiled, tossing his arm around his excited wife.Â
We parted ways with the promise of seeing them later this evening at family dinner. An event I typically despised, but now? Things didnât seem so dull. I was walking in with my fiance, instead of alone.Â
Lucien and I ran down the hallways hand in hand, laughing like teenagers getting away with sneaking out.Â
âI canât believe I just did that,â he laughed, backing me against a wall.Â
âDid what?â I ask, out of breath from running.Â
He leaned in close to my ear, âTold your brother how thoroughly Iâve been fucking you,â he smirks pressing a kiss beneath my ear.Â
âWell you didnât use language that graphic,â I snicker while playing with the ends of his hair.Â
He pulls his head back from my neck to give me that mischievous look again, âI can always go back in there and tell him,â he teases.Â
âOrâŚâ I say low in his ear, âyou could just show me.â I say suggestively.Â
Luâs lips curl upward brushing against the shell of my ear, âYou little minx!â he growls hoisting me up, earning a squeal from me.Â
âYou are beautiful and amazing and charming and you are going to be my wife,â he gushes, placing a kiss on my lips for every tender word.Â
Lu smiles at me before titling my chin up to meet his lips, the kiss warm and sweet. His hands pull my waist closer to him, and I bring my own from his chest to loop around his neck. He presses his forehead.Â
This was the start of a new chapter, one where I was somebodyâs first choice. One where I was chosen and loved. One where I didnât come home to an empty home, or show up to solstice parties without a date. One where I had someone to kill the spiders in the house for me, one where I was chosen.Â
As Lucien held me close to him, I could sense he felt all the same things too. It was a new start for both of us. A chance to be happy.Â
That evening after much celebration from Lucien and I that involved some time between the sheetsâŚand the shower⌠and the living room floorâŚwe finally dressed for dinner.Â
Dinner with the family was typically a laid back affair, it was the one time a week we could all see one another. Rhys would even make sure no one had any assignments during that time so that there were no interferences. My dress was nice yet laid back, nothing like what I would wear for starfall or a ball.Â
Lucien came up behind me as I put on my earrings in the stand up mirror.
âYou look lovely, my wife looks lovely,â he said, taking the earring back from my hand to place it on himself. Kissing my bare shoulder in the process.Â
âIâm not your wife yet,â I smile, turning in his arms.Â
âMaybe so but youâre going to be,â he reminds me, kissing my nose.Â
âThe day after tomorrow,â I sayÂ
âThe day after tomorrow,â he repeats back. âNow letâs go before our tardiness causes your brother to call off the wedding.âÂ
I laugh taking his hand and walking down the townhouse steps into the brisk night air. I checked to see that I had moved my impromptu engagement ring to my right hand before we got too far away. While I was excited about marrying Lu it was important to me that the wedding stay an elopement. I wasnât sure how the rest of the family would react. Despite our good humor and book swapping, Nesta may choose to rip off my head for taking her sisterâs mate and who knew how Cassian might feel about me marrying a Vanserra, even if it was Lucien.Â
As Lu held open the gate to the townhouse for me, the same way he did on starfall a year ago. I was sure that I had made the right choice. Not just in my future life partner, but in keeping the engagement secret for just a few days more.Â
The family gathered around the table, each one of them placing a dish in the center to be shared. During dinners we didnât like to have the maids do all the work, per the request of the Archeron sisters. They said it felt more homey if we all pitched in on the work and they were right. Lu and I parted ways and I gave Feyre and Nesta a warm hug before continuing to set the table. It seemed everyone was in high spirits as even when I passed by Rhys to lay down the potatoes he gave me a kiss on the forehead.Â
Maybe everyone was in a good mood for once, or maybe things just seemed lighter because I didnât walk in here by myself tonight.Â
Dinner moved quickly, and Lucien sat next to me as he normally did, both of us thick as thieves kicking each other's feet all night. It was impossible to keep such a happy secret from the family, but it was also insanely fun. Every now and then I caught a knowing glance from Rhys or Feyre. But whenever Rhys looked at me his next glance was always to Azriel, who didnât seem to suspect a thing.
When the meal was over we all took our goblets of wine and moved to the living room to drink, laugh and tell war stories, as we always did. Normally this was when I would make some half-assed excuse as to why I had to leave. The last thing I wanted to see was a bunch of mated couples all over each other. My heart still panged as Elain chose to sit on the arm of Azrielâs chair, but it was lightened by the brush of Lucienâs fingers against the back of my head as he went to sit across the room next to Rhys and Feyre.Â
It wasnât until Cassian started talking about going to war with the Valkyries for the one millionth time that I decided that I definitely needed more wine for this story. So I stood and marched my way into the kitchen with the promise of bringing back a couple bottles for everyone.Â
The walk-in wine cellar in the kitchen was cold, so when I turned around with two bottles in hand and bumped into a very warm chest I nearly yelped.Â
âShhh itâs just me,â Lucien grinned, taking the two bottles from my hand to place on the counter beside us.Â
âLu you scared the shit out of me,â I say in a hushed tone as he hoists me onto the countertop.Â
âIâm tired of watching them all cuddle up to one another in there, I want to cuddle up to you as well,â he smirked, placing kisses all over my neck.Â
âDown boy,â I giggle, acting like I donât feel the exact same way. I feel his lips curl against my skin as I run my hands through his hair.
âThis is only going to get worse once youâre my wife,â he smiles, placing a slow kiss on my lips.Â
âWIFE?!âÂ
I whip my head around from where Iâm sitting on the counter to see Azriel standing in the doorway, a look of pure betrayal written all over his face. Lucienâs hands found my waist pulling me off the counter so that my feet were firmly on the floor.Â
âYouâre marrying him?!â Azriel shouts again and suddenly a smaller figure appears behind him, swathed in light pink and roses.Â
âHeâs my mate you canât just take him,â Elain exclaims, seemingly coming into her own.Â
I immediately see red at her words, completely disregarding Azriel in the room. Elain who wouldnât give Lucien the time of day. Elain who knowingly entered an unethical relationship with Azriel and flaunted it. Elain who barely glanced at the pearl earrings Lucien had bought her for solstice. She had the gall to claim him, after the way she treated him.  Â
âTake him?â I scoff. âYou donât even want him.â I shout back, the words coming off a little harsher than expected.Â
âSheâs right y/n, Lucien is her mate,â Azriel interjected looking down at me, as if this situation didnât benefit him in every way. Gods he would just do anything to make that girl happy.Â
âThatâs deft coming from you shadowsinger,â Lucien snickered disdainfully, cocking his head at the spymaster.Â
Azriel bristled, âWhat's that supposed to mean?â he snarled.Â
I put a hand on Lucienâs chest to get him to back down, âIt doesnât matter, weâre happy. Is it really your mission to make everyone in this court miserable but yourself Elain?â
âHEY!â Azriel barked, taking a step towards me, his shadows rising behind him.Â
Before he can get a step closer Lucien grabs his arm, âEasy,â he hissed, but Azrielâs eyes didnât leave my scared form.Â
Never in my life had Azriel raised his voice at me in such a manner. While I wanted to say I was unphased, the outburst had scared me. As soon as he noticed my reaction to his behavior, a realization seemed to dawn on him, and he quickly stepped back.
âYouâre taking my mate, was there a way I was supposed to react?â Elain sneered just as snarky as ever, as if this was just a cat fight among the females.Â
The red I saw turned to crimson as I realized once more what she was doing. She didnât want Lucien because she loved him. She wanted him because she felt entitled to him, she wanted both of them. My mate and hers.Â
âYou take my mate, Iâll take yours!â I seethed the words spilling out of me like venom, unstoppable and poisonous to those in the room.Â
Elainâs eyes widened and I realized that the secret that I had kept for 400 years had finally come out. My stomach dropped and my blood ran cold, the world around me fading away as I discerned what I had done. Â
âWhat did you just say?â Azriel said in disbelief, my eyes flitted over to his.Â
Anger and hurt flashed in his golden eyes. I didnât know what to say. Couldnât know what to say. I had never prepared for this.Â
âAzriel I-âÂ
âIâm your mate?!â he sneered, his voice tinged with malice.
I felt a scarred hand grip my upper arm as if to winnow me away but Lucien was on Azriel in an instant gripping his arm right back.Â
âGet your hands off my wife,â he growled, raising his own metaphorical hackles.Â
âBy the looks of it sheâs not your wife yet. But apparently sheâs my mate so I will handle her however I please,â Azriel said, getting up in Luâs face, but to Lucienâs credit he didnât back down.
It was as if after 400 years the bond snapped for Az. And every urge that came with that bond had snapped in place with it. The worst part of it all was that I didnât know how to feel.  Â
âThat may be true but I wonât allow you to touch her in anger,â Lucien stated glowering at the shadowsinger.Â
Elain and I remained speechless and unmoving as Rhysand slid into the kitchen eyes ablaze at the scene before him.Â
âWhat the fuck is going on?â he bellowed as he saw Azriel gripping me and Lucien gripping him.Â
âIt seems that Lucien has decided to wed my mate,â Azriel said with a smooth calm that sounded more like a warning shot.Â
âYou treat her as if she was-â Lucien snarled back before Rhys cut him off.Â
âThatâs enough!â he shouted and it was enough for both males to let go. âAll of you get out of my sight and simmer down. We can talk about this when you can behave like adults!â
I think to protest my brother's orders, but he shoots me a glare so cold, so unyielding that I find myself sinking into Lucienâs embrace. I look to Azriel who wears his disappointment in me unnervingly well before winnowing both Lucien and I back home.Â
to be continued...

Main Masterlist
Tired eyes roam around, wings almost touching the ground, Azrielâs focus on the other side of Velaris as Rhysand kept talking about the same problems in the Hewn City. He really tried, but the tugs in his chest urged him home. To her.
âWe need to go there next week.â Rhysand looked around, his eyes landing on the clearly distracted Shadowsinger. âEveryone must go.â He emphasised, making Azriel internally groan in annoyance.Â
He wanted to ask for some time off, take his mate and their daughter on a vacation, enjoy their presence and just be with them for as long as he could. Rhys dismissed the meeting and he immediately jumped out of his seat. He wanted to be with her, hold her in his arms and tell her how much he missed her. A month away from his mate and their family was always hard, crushing his spirit and draining his energy until he was by her side again.Â
Without a proper goodbye and completely ignoring Feyreâs invitation to stay for dinner, Azriel fled, his wings carrying him with the wind. The house on the outskirts of Velaris irradiated life. The faelights surrounding the garden welcomed him home, he happily sighed, pushing the door open and sniffling the air, chicken and herbs filled his senses, a tint of strawberry mixed with chocolate chips.Â
He smiled as the strawberry scent grew stronger, and a pair of arms wrapped itself on his left leg. He looked down, the toddler, 3 years older than Nyx, moved herself around, the tiny wings slowly whooshing in the air as he scooped her up.Â
âMommy! DADDYâS HOME.â Little Selene screamed, and he kissed her cheek.
âHow are you, baby? Did you take care of mommy for me?â The little girl nodded excitedly.Â
âI did, and mommy took good care of me too.â Her arms wrapped around his neck and she kissed his face, loudly smacking her lips against his skin.Â
âI donât deserve a kiss too?â His beautiful mate appeared in front of him, some hair strands falling from the bun she always wore while she cooked, a dirty apron covered her front and she held a wooden spoon, Azriel never saw a much more beautiful sight in his entire life.
Placing Selene on the floor, he pulled her by the waist, his lips delicately brushing against her warm ones. Bliss was the only word close enough to describe the feeling of being in her embrace, being near them, his two girls, the two people he loved the most in this world. Â
âHow was the mission?â She asked, grabbing his hand and leading the way towards their bedroom. Azriel could see the candles illuminating the bathroom, and the bathtub filled to the brim with water and foam, his favourite soap filled his nostrils. She always had a bath ready for him, a pair of fresh clothes and a warm meal whenever he got home from a mission, he could stay two days away or two years, he would always get home to that.Â
âIncredibly annoying, I couldn't wait to be done and come home.â He discarded his clothes, her hungry gaze watched his every move, he could hear her swallowing hard at his naked figure. He submerged in the hot water, his muscles relaxing right away, she sat by the tub, a cloth in hand and started to rub his back.
âAnd I couldn't wait to have you back home.â She rubbed a particularly hard spot on his neck that had him moaning in relief. He rested his head against her thigh, her long fingers stroked in between his hair, massaging his scalp. âLene has a surprise for you.â She warned and he looked at her.
âWhat is it?â His wife giggled, and raised an eyebrow, which always indicated that she would keep quiet. He smiled at her, stealing the cloth from her hands and rubbing himself. âThen I'd better hurry up.â She nodded, getting up and heading out of the room.Â
âËâĄâžđ¤â˝ âĄËâ
âAs we trained, baby.â Y/N spoke, the late night breeze was a comfortable relief against the hot summer night. Azriel sat by the porch, Y/N held Leneâs hand and the little girl looked at her mother for reassurance. âYou wonât fall, and if you do, daddy and I are here to catch you, always.â
With a confident gleam in her eyes, Seleneâs wings moved, forcing her body upwards, little by little she started to float, her little hands slipping out of her motherâs reach. Azriel watched in complete awe as his daughter flew, her little body being carried towards the main gate and back to her mother. A month ago, Selene couldnât go anywhere without holding their hands.
He got up, clapping and urging her for another lap towards the gate and back to him. Her dark hair moved around in the wind, her flushed cheeks and her proud expression crashed against his chest. She squealed in delight as he held her, spinning her around.
âThat was so amazing. My girl is growing up so fast.â He kissed her cheek. âSoon you will be flying faster than your old daddy here.â Selene nodded in agreement.
âIâll be the fastest Illyrian in the world.â Her mother came up to them, her fingers poking her belly, making Selene squirm and laugh.Â
âYou will, my love. But now itâs time to go to bed, okay?â The little girl looked at her father, her mothers eyes looking at him. She was the perfect mix of them both.Â
âYou heard your mother.â He leaned to whisper in her ear. âWe canât disobey her, or else sheâll ground both of us.â Selene nodded, and they took her inside. Azriel placed her in bed, kissing her forehead and wishing her a goodnight, once again telling her how proud he was of her flight.
âShe wanted to train all month.â Y/N said, removing the hair tie and letting her hair fall loose, she removed her clothes and reached for one of his old shirts that reached the middle of her thighs. âI wish I could teach her more.âÂ
Despite being a full born Illyrian, Y/N was born without wings, no one understood how this even happened, but Azriel was glad that she was spared from the wings clipping cruelty that still happened on the camp she was born.Â
âYou do more than enough, tonight just proved it. Sheâll carry you when youâre too old to even walk.â She laughed, her beautiful smile plastered across her face.
âSo I only get to fly when I'm in diapers?â She rested her head against his chest.Â
âOkay, okay. Iâll take you flying tomorrow.â He rolled his eyes and she playfully slapped his chest. âYou have no idea how much I love you.â He blurted after a minute of silence. âIâll ask Rhys for some time off.â
âYou will?â Her big eyes turned towards him, hope sparked in them. He knew he worked a lot, and she was very patient with him missing important things, but someone could only be patient to a certain point, he knew she would snap soon and he didnât blame her.Â
âI will, I promise to you.â She kissed his chest.
âI love you, Az.â He could see the excitement covering her tone even if she tried to hide it, he was going to ask Rhys after the trip to the Court of Nightmares, he was sure that he would understand.Â
âËâĄâžđ¤â˝ âĄËâ
Azriel fixed his leathers, the new syphon in his chest was a shade darker than the others, he had used his main one to make a ring for Y/N and a necklace for Selene, so they would always have an important part of him with them. The remaining of the stone was well guarded in case he needed to make more jewellery for Leneâs future siblings.Â
âEveryone ready to go?â Rhysandâs voice sounded from somewhere behind him, but before he could muster a response, a piece of paper materialised itself in front of him. At the same time, his chest was flooded by a wave of pure distress and fear. He shifted anxiously, opening the paper.
âSelene got too excited flying and she fell, i think she broke her arm. Iâm taking her to the healers hall, please meet me there.â The words sank in his chest, she was eager to fly a longer distance because he had said if she could fly until she reached the tree a few feet away from their house, he would take her flying for a whole day. It was his fault.
He didnât register the voices calling his name, he just wanted to get to Selene as fast as he could. He was halfway into the threshold, hand on the cold doorknob, ready to leave, when his body suddenly went completely still. He couldnât move.
âI told you to stay.â Rhysandâs High Lord voice commanded and he growled, turning to him slowly.
âLet me go.â Azriel demanded. Rhys raised an eyebrow, he never had to use his powers on Azriel because he never failed to do his duty.
âWhatever is wrong with you, it's not more important than this trip, i told you everyone must go.â Everyone in the room could see the rage simmering in the Shadowsingerâs gaze, his golden eyes burning holes in Rhysandâs skull.
âI donât want to fight with you. LET. ME. GO.â His pure will of being with his family pushed Rhysandâs restrainings away, they silently watched as he started to move.
âI already told y..â Rhysand was cut short by the furious laughter of Azriel.
âNothing is more important than my daughter.â The words left his lips, leaving the whole inner circle astonished, his what? âLet alone that maggot who thinks heâs better than you.â Azriel turned around. âSo I'll see you later.â And with that he left.
Azriel kept his little family hidden from everyone, even from the people he trusted the most in the world, cuz he could never forgive himself if something ever happened to them. The thought of having them kidnapped and used as a way to get to him, their bruised bodies and broken spirit always flooded his mind whenever he thought of revealing them to the world. They were his most precious treasure and he would do anything in his power to keep them safe from the people who could harm them.
âWe need to go after him.â Feyre said, the distressed expression on his face completely shattered her heart. âAnd you will apologise, he would never fail his duty if it wasnât important for him, you shouldâve let him go.â She scolded and guilt filled Rhysâs violet eyes. He nodded, the Hewn City could wait, his brother was more important, and apparently his nieceâs wellbeing too.
âËâĄâžđ¤â˝ âĄËâ
As the inner circle arrives at the Healers Hall, they spot Madja, sheâs talking to a female. The female holds a little winged girl tightly against her chest, the little girl has a cast on her left arm, her little eyes are red with tears, a wet trail down her cheeks and the cutest pout ever. Without needing confirmation, they just know that itâs them.
They slowly approach, Azrielâs eyes meet Rhysand, heâs holding a glass of water and heading back to the femaleâs side. Sheâs too focused on Madja to notice the group coming behind them. The little girl notices tho, her eyes looking curiously at them, her features painfully familiar to the male standing by her side. Azriel whispered something to the female as Madja left.
She turned to them, her hand smoothing the girlâs hair. They looked beautiful together, and they wondered if she was his mate. By the way he pulled her close, they could only assume that yes, she was his mate. They could only guess what reason he had to hide them, the family he always wanted, how heavy this secret mightâve been to carry alone.
âWhat happened to this beautiful girl?â Feyre asked, stepping forward. Selene looked at her parents for reassurance, the two of them nodded slowly.
âTell what youâve been up to, Selene.â The femaleâs soft voice sounded. Feyre almost laughed with the coincidence, certainly Azriel noticed it. Selene the goddess of the Moon and Nyx the goddess of the Night.Â
âI wanted to fly like daddy, but I fell.â She lifted the cast to them. âDo you want to sign it?â Feyre nodded, despite looking like Azriel, she wasnât as shy as he was.
âNot now baby.â He said, his eyes locked up in a staring match with Rhys. âMaybe later, when they come over for dinner.â The High Lord nodded, they wouldn't miss this chance of learning about this secret part of his life.Â
âËâĄâžđ¤â˝ âĄËâ
The house was cosy, in a quiet place, like they always pictured Azrielâs house as. Coloured markers were scattered around the living room table, everyone needed to pick one and sign Seleneâs cast in order to access the rest of the house, as she happily demanded. Swirls of shadows, hearts, flowers and names marked her cast, she meticulously examined every single drawing, before happily dragging the three year old boy along with her, towards a pile of toys.Â
Y/N, as she introduced herself, was moving around the kitchen, different aromas lingered in the air, Elain was immediately by her side, chopping vegetables. Feyre and Mor prepared the table, while Nesta watched over the kids. The females talked, getting to know all they could about Y/N and their family. She happily engaged in the conversation like they were long time friends.
Azriel, Cassian and Rhys sat by the living room, cups filled with liquor. Rhys wanted to apologise, so he cleared his throat, his violet eyes filled with regret. The two males stopped the chat, turning to him.
âIâm so sorry for how I acted. I shouldâve assumed that you would never leave if it wasnât important for you.â The Shadowsinger nodded. âI shouldâve never stopped you.â
âAnd I should've told you, a long time ago.â He answered.Â
âNo, you didnât have to.â Cassian intervenes.Â
âHeâs right, you had your reasons, I would've done the same for Feyre and Nyx.â Azriel smiled, knowing very well that he would, in fact, do the same if he ever needed to.
âI donât want to hide them anymore.â He looked over to his mate, talking with his sisters in law, and his daughter, playing with her cousin.Â
âThen weâll be glad to be their protectors.â Rhysand spoke. Cassian reached for his and Azrielâs hand.
âAs long as we live, they will be safe. All of them. That is a promise.â And their skins prickled, a tattoo forming to seal the bargain made between the three brothers. As long as they lived, their families would always be safe, no harm would ever get to them.
