A little girl finds a ring, washed up on the riverside. She drops her toy boat on the silt shore, and stumbles over rocky steps to reach it. She wasn't sure it was a ring at first- only that it was shiny, and bright. She picks it up in her small hand, laughing to herself. It must be diamond, she thinks. After all, as a seven-year-old girl, she believes all rings must be diamond. A real treasure. She hears a voice in her head. The voice is clear and soft. Feminine. No distinct age.
This is for you.
"For me?" the girl asks. Nobody is nearby to hear. And even if they were, they wouldn't think it unusual. What child doesn't have a few imaginary friends?
Yes. What is your name?
"My name is Avon!" she says, excited to introduce herself to someone new. It doesn't occur to her that a voice that speaks to her must come from somewhere. She only cares that they are friendly. Usually there is no one to play with when she comes here.
That’s a lovely name.
"Thank you! What's your name?" Avon says. There's a pause where the answer should be. Avon doesn't register it, busy fiddling with her new gift.
My name is not important.
"Why not?" she asks, her face scrunched up in confusion. She looks up to the water, but of course, there is no one there.
I will tell you tomorrow.
"Okay," she says, and quickly forgets the matter. "Does this mean that we're married now?" Avon asks, with wide, owlish eyes.
That's very clever of you. Not quite.
"Can I keep this?" Avon tries putting the ring on, but it doesn't fit on any of her tiny fingers. She frowns.
Of course. It is for you. It will fit soon.
Avon lets out an over-exaggerated sigh at the idea of waiting.
"Okay. I'm putting it in my house. So I don't lose it."
Alright, Avon.
Avon grins and scrambles back over the rocks, eager to stow away her treasure. She looks back towards the river. The toy boat she left behind is still there, and Avon resolves to come back for it later.
When she does come back, the voice is gone.
Avon loses the ring among her toys, and soon forgets about it entirely.
~~~
"Avon, where did you find this?" her father asks in a startled voice. He had been cleaning through her room. Generally she was good about keeping her mess off the floor, but he was assured that it wouldn't spoil her if he helped every once in a while. Today, he found a ring- a blue, iridescent stone, set into a dark band. Avon hops over to where he's kneeled on the ground.
"The river gave it to me!" she declares proudly. Her father turns it over. It's pretty, but not much else. He turns to Avon, smiling fondly.
"So you found it by the river, huh?" Avon nods in responds. He holds it out to her. "Okay. Make sure you take good care of your things, alright?"
"Okay, dad!" she says, hoping to avoid a lecture. Luckily for her, there isn't one.
"Here you go." He chuckles and hands it out to her. When Avon has it again, she inspects it in much the same way she saw her dad do it. It doesn't make much difference, but it is endearing. She giggles and runs off with her treasure.
~~~
Avon grows older. She learns to take better care of her things. She doesn't hear anymore disembodied voices. The ring stays on her hand. Years pass.
~~~
Avon brings a girl to her house. Avon is nineteen, and in college. She's only visiting briefly. The other girl is older by two years, and her family is in the military, and Avon feels like she needs to impress her. She must not be doing a good job, because her father reminisces all afternoon about how she caused trouble at her Catholic school when she was young, and when the girl asks Avon what she used to do for fun, Avon takes her to the river.
"I found my ring here," she says with a half-smile. "Some voice from the river said they were giving it to me." The other girl wrinkles her nose.
"That's weird," she says, and then snorts. Avon shoves her shoulder against her side.
"You callin' my river weird, Mayim?"
"You're weird! That's definitely one of those memories that people make up." Avon blows raspberries at her. Mayim squats down on the shore. "I like your weird dad though." Avon kneels down next to her.
"Was it bad growing up with your parents?" she asks. No judgement, just a question. Mayim shrugs.
"Nah, we just moved around a lot, that's all. I'm glad you have a little place." Mayim pokes at the water as if that proves her point. The river just flows around her finger. She turns to Avon with a bright-eyed smile. "Okay, my mom though. Every once in a while she'd bring home one of those MREs, and I got so excited about it. Do you know I lost my mind when I found out people hated those things?" Avon mirrors her smile.
"Never had one."
"Chef Boyardee met cafeteria lunch," Mayim explains. Avon pretends to retch.
"Ew."
"You callin' my food weird, Avon?" Mayim teases. She sticks her tongue out and goes to poke Avon with the finger she put in the water. Avon backs away from her.
"Hell yeah, I am!" Mayim tackles her, and Avon's shoulders hit the ground. She grabs Mayim's wrists, but she doesn't quite stop her. Silt gets in her hair, and they just laugh at each other.
Mayim ends up staying the night, and Avon forgets she was worried about impressing her.
~~~
Avon rarely visits her father, and she visits the river even less.
~~~
One day she visits the river, but not her father.
Heavy footsteps draw towards the water. Her hands are clenched at her sides, and if it weren't for the tears on her face, she might even look angry. Avon walks to the shore. She pauses for a moment, as if she doesn't know where to go next. And then she drops to the ground. Avon pulls her legs to her chest. When she opens her mouth, she almost screams. Except there's no one to be angry at. Avon should only be angry with herself. She could've visited more. A shuddering breath escapes her lips. Air will not stay inside her. She must be drowning.
"My dad is dead," Avon admits to nothing and no one. Her voice is thick with tears, and she curls up into herself. Avon's fingernails claw marks into her arms, where they wrap around her legs. Her face is lost in her knees. "Now I have no one."
Don't say that. I'll always be here.
Avon stays there on the ground. Eventually her breath slows to even.
Something guides her forward. Avon crawls closer to the river. She takes off her shoes and her socks, and then rolls up her pants. After a brief hesitation, Avon puts her feet into the water. It calms her. She still has tears left to cry, but they are no longer bitter.
~~~
Years pass. The house is now hers, but Avon doesn't visit at all.
~~~
Mayim doesn't think about giving Avon a ring, especially since she has one already. The two of them don't care too much about traditions. Still, Mayim feels like she needs to impress her.
So she puts together five years worth of videos of them, and dates they went on a million years ago, and trips they went on together across the country, and footage of them playing pranks on their friends, and holidays shared with both of their families, and days spent doing nothing but being in each other's company. And then Mayim rents an entire theater and tells Avon that they're just going to see a movie.
When she realizes what it is, Avon is too stunned for words. Her father is in the video too, smiling kindly at the camera. It is just like she remembers, as if he is still smiling at her. She starts crying long before the movie is over. Before the screen fades to black and the lights turn on overhead, Mayim stands up and takes her hand. She's crying too.
"Avon," she asks, "Will you marry me?"
Avon squeezes Mayim's hand, and she's crying and laughing at the same time she says "Yes!"
Mayim forgets she was worried about impressing her.
~~~
The venue for their wedding is close to their hometown. There is one person who won't be attending.
Avon takes a while to hide from everyone before the ceremony. She ends up at her father's house again, still in her huge wedding dress. The furniture is covered in white sheets, and dust dances in the sunlight. It is like being inside an empty museum. Avon takes the covers off the couch in the living room, just to make sure it's still hers. The couch is just like she remembers it. She sighs. Avon puts the cover back on. She isn't supposed to be standing in her childhood home, still wearing a dress twice her size.
The back door swings with the breeze. Its handle must have rusted open while she was gone. Avon stares at the backyard for a while, as if she doesn't know where to go next. She wanders past the door. Once outside, the yellow-green grass sways high against her skirts, having been left to grow for so long. She heads down a familiar path, lined with skinny, tall trees. They give way to plain dirt, then stones and silt. The water sings as it spills against the shore.
Welcome back.
Avon startles.
Are you going to leave again?
"Why are you here now?" Avon says from where she overlooks the water. Nobody is nearby to hear. The voice pays her question no mind. "Who are you, anyway?"
An old friend.
Avon stands there, uncomprehending. She's been here so many times, but she was young then. The river hasn't changed, but Avon is unsettled to be here. The ring is still on her finger.
Do you think it's odd that I've known you for so long, and we've barely touched?
Avon winces.
"What's that supposed to mean?" There is a beat of silence. Last time she was here, her father had just passed away. Avon stares blankly.
Come back to me.
Avon walks to it, solemn. She ignores the water soaking into her dress, or the mud staining it. It becomes heavy to walk in, but she continues. She stays facing forward. She wants to find that voice. It hasn't changed at all. It's exactly the way she remembers it. She falls forward onto her arms with a shout. The lace rips. The mud spreads to her hair. Avon keeps crawling forward. For once, the voice's silence is a taunt. Avon keeps going forward, and forward and forward and forward and

LoL Chapter 20- True Family
Masterpost
A Wizard Hermits tale (AU and Red belongs to @theguardiansofredland )
The past comes back to haunt Mumbo as a familiar, familial face returns to his life and offers him the unthinkable. Is Mumbo loyal to the hermits, or his he willing to return to the place he grew up in?
_________________________________
“Today’s the big day.” Iskall whispers, looking around the room. Once again packed full of hermits sitting on beds, on furniture, and on the floor. Mumbo hasn’t taken off his gold medal since he won it yesterday, even sleeping with such a spectacular prize. The only hermit missing from the group meeting was False. She made it to the final round of the endurance battle, facing off wave after wave of illusions. Pushed beyond exhaustion, hardly able to stand, she backed down from the last wave. She claimed she could’ve gone forward, but a sudden feeling of pressure on her shoulders, her head swimming and her magic falling from her bones left her unable to continue. She’s still in bed now, recuperating. Grian did his best to heal her illness, but when he attempted to, he discovered her magic was nearly drained. Beyond anything a spell could cause. She even looked pale, the pink color of her cheeks lost and her hair a platinum blonde.  The gold medal was won by Avon, beating out Doc and Jerome soundly, and False by a single  round.
But Doc was still at the meeting. He didn’t last nearly as long as False, and while he was tired, it was nothing like what she has. Grian was able to heal his aching lungs, the wounds sustained from their fight with the Guild of Gideon. He was tired, but nothing was going to stop him from being a part of his own heist. He’s been looking forward to this for too long. To finally discover who’s the bastard that destroyed Gildara, that attacked the Asklepions, and tried to take out his friends, his family.
“I never thought I’d say this, but we’re leading the Championship by leaps and bounds.” TFC chuckles, shaking his head. “I know we surprised the guilds, the Council, and all of Lairyon. But you all surprised me as well.”
“Guess Grian’s pep talk really brought the team spirit out in us.” Etho tosses a ball in the air, catching it and bouncing off Doc’s head. He’s the only one brave enough to anger the criminal.
“Either way, whatever happens today, I just want to tell you all that I am so proud of all the work we’ve done. And best of all, no one suspects a thing as to why we’re really here. That being said, let’s go over today for everyone.” TFC clears his throat, skimming across the scroll in his hands. “This morning has the water battle. Ren, you’re going to be going against one of the wanderers, and judged based on your performance against all the other contestants. Stress, you’ll be playing in the kipling dodgeball. That’s a last one standing event, and we all know how hard you throw.” The guildmaster hums with a smirk, continuing down the schedule. “And in the afternoon is capture the flag. Tango?”
“They won’t even know what happened to their flag.” He grins, the healing wound on his cheek burning. But none of that will stop him from grinning.
“That’s what i thought. Tonight is the duel- the biggest event of the games. All of Lairyon will be watching. Which makes it the best time for the heist. Our job is to put on a show while our infiltration team here learns the truth. Boys-” TFC stares directly at the heist team. “Do whatever it takes, we have your back. The rest of us, we’ll be supporting our fighters in the duel. If we win at least one event today, we’ve secured our spot in the Labyrinth run on the final day.”
“Do you think we’ll actually win?” Joe questions. The labyrinth run is only for the top two teams. It’s a challenge beyond all challenges, an ever changing maze filled with enigmatic enchantments and feral beasts.
“If not us, then certainly Team Crafted or the wanderers will. Either way, we made history. All of us, being the first nonguild team to win the championship.” TFC smiles, rolling up the scroll and slipping it in his bag. “Good luck to everyone, I dunno about you guys but I’m gonna go get myself a celebratory drink before the water battle. One that doesn’t taste like swampwater.”
TFC hops over the rest of the hermits, sauntering out before anyone else can realize the meeting is over. Ren hops to his feet, only to be grabbed and held still by Doc. “We have our own heist meeting, man.”
The guild filters out, but the sea of hermits is cut through by one sole fish swimming upstream. Quentin grabs at Mumbo’s sleeves, missing once, twice, before finally grabbing hold of the black fabric and tugging him to the side. “Mumbo, right? You- you’re Mumbo, the one that beat Ian in the tech competition? The multi-mage?”
Mumbo looks around, but the hermits have disappeared within the woodworks. “Ah, yep. That’s me. Is something wrong, chap?”
“There’s some people down in the tavern that asked for you.” He pauses, looking up at him. “You specifically.”
Mumbo frowns, his heart picking up pace and thumping against his chest. He clutches the black robes, trying to still the racing muscle trapped within his ribs. Is it the arcane guard? Do they know why the hermits are here? That they’re still congregating as a guild, not just a team? But why him specifically? Do they know he’s the easiest, perhaps they’re using him as bait, the fastest to lure into a trap? “O-Okay. Can you l-lead the way?”
The kipling nods, blue and light orange curls bouncing across his finned ears. He guides Mumbo down the open, rickety steps. He jumps over the last one, to which Mumbo trips over as it buckles under him. He tumbles to the sticky wooden floor, rubbing his head. With one eye open, he winces and sees who’s here for him.
“Mumbo. Still never got your own two feet beneath you?” Mumbo’s breath falls out from his lips, his father’s voice cutting across the wood. The upper crust, noble accent pricks against Mumbo’s ears, immediately souring his mood. He hasn’t seen his father since the morning of his last guild exam. The last thing his father had said to him- until now- was to never return home if he failed another test.
“Father? What are you-” He falls silent as soon as his father raises his hand, motioning for him to be silent and stand. Dammit, Mumbo hates how he still has control over him like that. Hasn’t a year with the hermits taught him anything?
“You did well, boy. Your magic has grown leaps and bounds since I last laid eyes upon you. I saw your performance yesterday. Yesterday, I had a son again.” Mumbo’s head snaps up, hearing that word fall from his father’s lips again. Mumbo’s lips open and close, only weak noises escaping his throat. A sharp glare from the grey eyes they share silences him once more. “Mumbo, it’s time for you to come home. You have brought honor to our house, as a champion,” His father’s eyes fall to the medal at Mumbo’s neck, eyeing the prize hungrily. “I’m sure every guild will welcome you after that.”
Mumbo’s eyes snap up, and he steps back. “What? Why would I leave a perfectly good guild? Why would I leave my friends?”
“Those ruffians are not a guild, Mumbo. Listen to your father, and come ho-” He reaches forward, only for his hand to jerk back as a spark of lightning crosses between father and son.
“No! They’re my friends, they’re my guild! They care about me more than you ever did!” The tavern crackles with energy, lightning shooting out in small branches.
“Be silent, boy. You’ve forgotten your place as a nobleman.” A dangerous glare meets Mumbo’s angered stare.
“No! I’m done listening to you! The day you disowned me, I found a better family!” He remembers the pain of rejection, lost and alone in the alleys of Milliara. No family, no one to help him when a gang of robbers attacked. His father didn’t come to help- he was saved by Grian. A stranger saved him, now his best friend. The one who invited him to join the guild.
“Those heathens? They aren’t a guild, Mumbo, they’re criminals! Would you really prefer that to your own flesh and blood? Your fam-”
“You’re not my family! You said it yourself. The hermits are always there for me, always my family no matter what. Whether I’m a champion or an amateur. They loved me despite my struggles, cared for me and welcomed me. It was their care, their devotion, their support that won this gold medal! This is for them, because of them. It’s not for you.” Mumbo steps up, feet leaving the ground as he looms over his father. “Grian, TFC, Xisuma...they’re better people than you ever were to me. They’re my family. I’m already home. Now- leave.”
Mumbo doesn’t know when the nobleman leaves, he just hears the sound of the tavern door closing, the empty air before him. And that sticky floor, the old wooden boards, and the crooked iron nails are the best sight ever. He wipes his tears on his sleeve, crackling with lightning as his feet come to rest on the ground once again. He remembers to breathe, air rushing in and out of his lungs. When he opens his eyes again, there’s a mug of ale in front of him. He looks up, seeing Quentin leaning against the bar. How long was he there? Did he see that all? “You look like you could use a beer, man.”
And with friends, even the worst tasting swill was the best thing ever.
_______________________
Mumbo, Quentin, and a few other hermits joined to walk to the coliseum together. Grian and Iskall noticed Mumbo’s tearstained eyes, and did their best to keep him laughing. But he hardly needed it, just being with them was the best of all. The hermits take their seat, Quentin leaving to join his own team. He nodded to Stress, wishing her good luck in the dodgeball tournament they share later on.
Hovering at visual height to the seats, an orb of freefloating water hangs in the air. Like a water droplet suspended midsplash, held aloft by a number of water mages- most kipling. In the water, the hermits can see Ren getting used to his wet surroundings. Across the other side of the battlefield, Red is floating. At home in her element.
“Ah, this is going to be easy. Red’s so sweet and kind, Ren will easily win.” Stress chuckles, leaning forward and watching the two. “It’s not a tournament style- he just ‘as ta impress the judges an’ win this wee battle. He’s got it in the bag- Ren’ll show ‘em what an imagination wizard can do.”
They're on the edge of their seats, peering into the water. Across the rippling mass, they can see the crown seat, the Council watching as Ren and Red bow. Magistrate Dolios leans back, resting his cheek on his hand. A small smirk appears on his face as the fight begins.
Ren doesn’t wait, making the first move. A shark conjures up from his imagination, teeth in a circular jaw gnashing towards Red. He doesn’t back down, brushing his hand to the side with a happy-go-lucky smile on his face. A massive internal wave throws the shark off course, the undertow pulling on both his sundappled cloak and Ren’s ears. The imaginary shark dissipates into a school of colorful fish, schooling along the interface between air and water.
The smile on Red’s face changes. Glittering, innocent eyes grow sharp, and Ren tucks his tail between his legs. He...may have underestimated the little kipling. The water around him shifts forward, dragging Ren closer to the kipling. He’s trapped in the rip current, unable to swim free. Even though he can breathe underwater thanks to mimicking a kipling, it’s still terrifying. He’s within striking distance, and Red doesn’t waste a second. A flash of light, illuminating from nowhere blinds Ren, but he rebounds quick thanks to his sunglasses.
Just in time, too. Poison seeps through the water, brushing against his arm and leaving it numb. It would have paralyzed him, if he didn’t swim back. He imagines a barrier around him, his magic circle appearing briefly before turning into what he has in his head. How quickly the tides have turned, Ren forced into defense.
Water tumbles and turns Ren, his own magic devoted solely to keeping himself from harm. A shield to block poison, a rubber ball to take on the electrocution. He sloshes backwards, the tips of his ears peeking out of the water bubble. Ren lowers his shields, creating coral platforms and jumping across. Rushing towards Red. He creates a giant fish hook, slinging it around Red. She only laughs, looking down at the ornately carved hook. “I’m not a guppy, you know.”
“I know.” Ren smirks, then pulls Red forward. Grabbing hold of his arm- just long enough for the magic to settle in. “Ladies get in line.”
“Not a lady.” Red squeaks out, just in time before the hook disappears and he’s thrown back. A massive wave nearly casting Red from the water. Ren grins, rolling his shoulders and getting a feel for the new magic he’s mimicking. It’s only as strong as he is, but he knows he can make use of Red’s magic. Across the water, Red shakes his head, regaining his senses from the spin cycle. “Now it’s fun.”
Red twirls, cloak wrapping around her as a curtain. She extends her arm, and snaps her fingers. Beneath the dueling wizards, kiplings jump back as the water they command is pulled from their control. The entire sphere of water is at Red’s command, tightening inwards. Forcing Ren to flee the constricting edge. He shoves his hands out. It keeps the water directly around him from disappearing, but he’s playing tug of war with a mage much more powerful than him.
He huffs, breath and chest rising and falling. How is he already tired? Why does his throat feel like it’s closing up, his lungs pressing inwards? Why does it feel like he’s drowning, even though he can clearly breathe? He needs to win. Ren shoves his hands forward, and a tsunami pulses forward.
The kipling just barely stops the massive wave from knocking him out. It thrashes Red, pulling on his fins and hair. One arm is cut against the coral outcrops, skeins of blood dancing in the orbiting water. For a battle, that was the first blood drawn- the beauty of magic. Ren puts his hands on his hips, accomplished.
The sight of blood in the water, the scent, turns the kipling into a shark. Before Ren can realize what’s coming for him, it’s too late. The bubble reels backwards, gathering in strength and pulling on Ren. He stays rooted in place. Sharp teeth appear under a dangerous smile from Red.
Ren’s doomed. He knows that. The wave surges forward, growing and ripplings. Cresting and crashing. Right on top of him. His safety bubble pops, the rushing water sending him sprawling into the mud at the floor of the stadium. His ears flick water, gasping air and coughing up the water still in his lungs. He completely forgot about the crowd until he hears the raucous cheering around him. Water splashes beside him, and he turns to see Red plopped beside him. Smiling that innocent smiling again. They’re both exhausted, beyond what they should be, struggling to breath. Red tilts her head, shaking hands with Ren. “That was an epic fight, your magic is super cool.”
“Thanks, my dude. That was a sound thrashing. I bequeath the win to you. And I can only hope I stay on your good side.” Ren laughs, sitting up and shaking water off his hair and fur. Even though he lost, that was the most fun he’s had since Eremita.
He could go for a fight like that everyday, if it didn’t mean he felt this horrible pain in his chest, the exhaustion in his body. What’s causing this? Why does he feel so tired? Why does his skin look pale, lost of color? Why does even his clothes seem dull?
And why does his magic feel like it’s gone missing?

22rd of Rain’s Hand, Turdas
Sildras returned home quite exhausted from a full day of evaluation.
I do not know exactly what the assessments required of him, but he looked as though he had been awake for a week. He could have fought his way out of Coldharbour and looked better.
As any concerned parent, I had the servants immediately have a nutritional meal and plenty of water brought. I also had one of my premium restorative potions brought forth to help him with recovering his magicka.
Mother said I was doting too heavily upon him and that he would never learn to care for himself if he did not experience the affects of overburdening himself.
I promptly ignored her.
Sildras is still a child. And the fact that she might say such a thing and the state with which he returned home, makes me worry for what Shad Astula would plan for a mer his age. Most enlisted in the university proper are entering their early twenties or thirties. Sildras has only recently passed his first decade of life. It is not appropriate for them to expect the same of him as of those who are nearly adults or already adults. He is a child!
Mother was going to begin an argument over it. I just knew it.
Usually I would bite my tongue and plant my feet, but this was something I could not stand for.
I had the servants take Sildras off to recuperate and then I faced Mother.
To tell the truth, I do not know when the last time I have ever faced her. Not like this.
Sure, we had some arguments from time to time as I was growing up. But mostly I just pushed down my feelings and accepted what she had to say, what she wished to have done.
This was different. Knowing what all Sildras has been through, I could not stand idly by. Knowing what happened to me, I could not stand in silence.
I told her that it did not matter, for once, what she thought. That when it was matters of family or of the House, I did my best to defer to her. However, this was the well being of my son, the boy who had to live for five years believing his father was dying and that everyone in the world was out to get him. Then to learn his own mother wished him harm and that the man her loved and thought of as father was some stranger using magicka to impersonate me. That he then had to deal with his mother being sent to Temple arrest for attempted murder and crimes against the House. That he has had to learn to know who his real father was, to travel through dangerous lands, to build new family relationships. That time and again he has been separated from those he loved at the whims or sense of duty of his differing obligations. To deal with all of that and then to be told that he must push himself to the brink of death, a concept he is still too young to fully grasp, all for the sake of proving he has some worth, some value to our House, is unconscionable.
Mother heard me out in stoney silence, then rounded on me as soon as I stopped speaking.
She told me that I was making the situation about my own issues, my fears over my own failings and inadequacies. That I was selfish and stubborn child, too spoiled to understand the importance of what was being done. After all, she said, I was hardly an expert in the arcane and, as such, had no right to speak on the ways a university of mages conducted itself.
I laughed.
How could I not?
While I had not been thinking as much of my own experience before, that bitter resentment blossomed anew with her venomous words.
She had wanted to wound me. It was her wish to shame me into submitting, or else, to make me lash out emotionally to the point where she could dismiss my argument as overly emotional.
Mother forgets that I was trained, and trained well, to force my feelings where I needed.
And so, though I saw the wisps of steam rising off my clothing, I took a deep breath as I smiled.
I looked at Mother and told her she was a fool if she believed that.
She looked taken aback and told me that she was surprised I had learned to control myself enough to keep my emotions under control, perhaps I was starting to mature after all.
Ignoring her continued provocation, I told her I pitied her. To think that a mer so capable of breaking expectation and learning to open her mind would allow herself to be blinded to the truth.
I did not let her speak as she opened her mouth again, cutting her off and telling her she would listen to me.
Mother would not want to hear it, perhaps she would not believe me, I did not care. If she never wished to speak to me again, in that moment, I was perfectly fine with severing that connection. But she would see me. She would learn the truth of what she allowed to happen.
I told her that arcane knowledge did flow through me. That she and the so-called experts at Shad Astula had dismissed me for not being able to perform spells within their neat little schools of magicka and dismissed the fact that my ability to so easily cast flame cloak might be an indication of something more.
That while she had decided to let me believe I was a failure for not being just like her, it was her own failings as a Mother to see me for what capabilities there were.
So someone else had taken my hand. The Mother of Spiders had seen well enough what I was capable of and saw to it to bring the threads of fate before me so that I could learn magicka. That while she dismissed the abilities of the spy masters as potions and scrolls, were in fact, spell based. That I had come to learn shadow magicka. That within it, the reason I climbed so high a rank was not purely my birthgift or whatever other lies she had told herself. I had taken those spells I was taught and through no training other than my own effort, shaped those spells to my own desires.
That I went to the Mages Guild while I was in Coldharbour, the institution that Morrowind’s mages so often look down upon as derivative, and learned that I had an extraordinarily large pool of magicka I could draw from, something learned through use. That I may not have understood theory, but that I was able to adapt and shape spells, to craft new ones based on things I previously had knowledge of. That once I had a teacher who understood my abilities, they were able to actually get me to learn those spells Shad Astula was too assumptive to waste their time on.
I was nine for Boethiah’s sake!
Who determines the fate and worth of a child at that age?!
Who looks at their only child and thinks, they cannot do this one thing and so they no longer have any value whatsoever?!
I laughed again.
I told her that the reason I was so unruly, the reason I threw myself at anything that I could was because I was so desperately searching for something, anything that might prove I had worth. That I could see every time I looked at her that she only saw me as a disappointment, as a failure. That I had wanted, just for once, for her to have seen me worthy of her love.
Azura’s tits! My own Mother had not even recognized when I had been gone for five years. An imposter lay in my bed and raised my son, her grandchild, and she could not even recognize it was not me. While her daughter-in-law sought out the downfall of our family, she could not see me as anything but that failure wasting away in a bed. And she was fine with it! She accepted it!
Mother tried to stop me and say I was being unfair.
I would not fear it.
I asked her when, in my entire life after the University rejected my being a mage in her footsteps that she felt proud of me. Just once.
She was silent for what seemed like an eternity, as though she was simply not going to say anything.
Mother opened her mouth and said it was when I agreed to marry Urtisa and when she knew I had begot a son.
That was the truth of it. We both knew.
There was nothing left to say.
I  turned and walked away.
As I did, I could hear Mother try and say something but I raised my hand. I told her that I had no interest in speaking further. I had my son to look after. That she could see herself out.
I did not hear her footsteps as I closed the door behind me and headed off towards the bath.
When I was done, I had Kuna and Cariel help with bringing soothing treats for Sildras. I had them fetch some books from the library for him.
In truth, he was so tired, most of the food and drink lay untouched or with just a sip or bite taken from it. He fell asleep with a book in one hand and a stuffed guar in the other. I had not seem him hold this toy for a long while. In truth, I had forgotten he even had it.
I told Nabine and Avon that I would be staying with him for the night.
There was an awkward glance exchanged between them and I offered that whichever, or both of them, could take guest rooms if they did not wish to share my bed alone. There seemed some relief on the matter.
Then I climbed into bed next to Sildras. He stirred and I stroked his hair.
He opened his eyes and asked if I was going to stay with him. I answered that I would if he would like and he nodded, grabbing my shirt.
I set aside the book on his nightstand and stroked his hair until he had fallen back to sleep.
He slept deeply for half the night, then tossed and turned several times following. I made sure to softly sing a lullaby and stroke his hair to calm him each time.
I am worried for what is coming for him. What will they do if this is simply a test and not the long-term expectations?
Surely the House is behind much of this. They have their own plans for what should become of my son.
Well, they will have to contend with me.
If Almalexia herself should try and force my son to do what he does not desire, I will fight to protect him. They can kill me and I will come back and fight again.
The Three guide me, I will not let anyone force my son to risk himself on such trivial things. If it gets us banished from House and home, even Morrowind, I would prefer that to seeing Sildras harmed. This I promise.
While my mind will not stop replaying my argument with Mother and her cross words, I know that she will not be able to forget mine either. For better or worse, she had to hear my grievances. What she does with that knowledge is purely her own prerogative.
I will protect my family with my life. Lives. I will do whatever my Prince desires if it should keep those I love safe.

Je T’aime, Mon Cher Eddie
Tumblr media
For @time-for-tozier who came up with this idea, I hope you like it!!
Tumblr media
Eddie watched as the clock’s minute hand moved towards the number 12, making a ticking noise as it wet round. He was so fixated that he jumped when the bell rang, the cue for people around him to pack up and leave the room.
He slammed his yellow note book shut and shoved it, and his pencil, into his backpack, before running out of the classroom to meet up with the other losers.
He sprinted down the hallways, bumping into several people and nearly tripping twice, before he reached the door. He swung the door open and walked to the bike rack around the side of the school.
“Hey Eddie,” Ben called to him as he walked over.
“Hey guys,” Eddie took in the positions of his friends. Mike was sat on the ground, fiddling with his bike, it kept breaking. Ben was sat on a bench about a meter away from the bike rack, a book resting open on his lap. Beverly was sitting on her bike seat, hands already gripping the handlebars as if she was in a hurry to go. Bill and Stan were stood next to each other, however, Eddie noticed, much too close to be considered normal. And Richie, well, he was being his usual self. He was hung upside down on one the metal bannister of a nearby stair case, dark hair brushing the ground.
“Eds! You finally arrived!” Richie near shouted bouncing his way back over to the group. “Can we go now?”
The losers collectively rolled their eyes and grabbed their bikes, climbing on and cycling towards the woods.
Their was a field there that they had claimed as their new hangout. It was completely secluded and surrounded by trees. In the spring, the ground was covered in daisies, Richie loved it, and prided himself on making “the best daisy chains in Derry”. In the Summer and Autumn, the grass was green and soft. And in the Winter, the Loser’s decided to just hand out at each other’s houses instead, with the careful avoidance of the Tozier, Marsh and Kaspbrak residences.
They were all laying on the grass. Beverly had her head resting on Ben’s lap as he sat cross legged playing with her hair. Stan and Bill were laying shoulder to shoulder, Mike was spread out like a starfish, and Richie was resting his head on Eddie’s stomach.
They were peaceful.
“Richie, I couldn’t help but to notice that you were in my French class this morning.” Bev spoke up, breaking the silence.
She knew there had to be a reason behind his sudden appearance in the class. She knew that she took it so that one day, when she was old enough, she could move to France and never look back. She knew that Stan’s parents wanted him to focus more on his religion. She knew that Ben was already fluent in the language and didn’t need to take a class. She knew that Bill found it too hard because of his stutter. She knew that Mike and Eddie simply didn’t want to take the subject, seeing no reason for it.
So what was Richie’s reason?
“You take French?” Eddie chuckled, sitting up. “Since when?”
“Well, obviously since this morning dipshit. I already know how to say some stuff. Such as,” Richie cleared his throat. “Ta mère aime ça dans le cul.”
Bev’s head shot up. “Beep Beep Richie.”
“W-what did he say?” Bill asked.
“Do you really want me to tell you?” Bev whined. The rest of the group, bar Richie and Ben, nodded. She sighed. “He said “your mother likes it up the ass.”
Groans of “Richie”, and “really?” We passed around as Richie smirked.
“Hey Rich? Do you know anything that’s not rude?” Eddie asked.
“Umm yeah,” Richie replied. “Eddie, tu as de beaux yeux.” (You have beautiful eyes)
“What does that mean?”
“Ahh, my dear Eddie Spaghetti, that is a secret.”
“Don’t call me that. Bev? Can you tell me what he said?” Eddie asked Beverly, who was staring at Richie with a strange look on her face. She stared for a few more moments before turning to Eddie.
“Sorry Eddie, I don’t know what he said.”
————
The next morning Richie bounced into school with too much energy for 7am on a Tuesday.
“Good morning, mes petits choux.” He smiled, leaning his chin on Eddie’s head.
“Richie, if I may ask, why did you just call us ‘your little cabbages’?” Ben questioned.
“I did it because I felt like it.” Just then the bell rang for class.
“Um, Richie? Can I talk you you for a sec? In private?” Beverly asked. Richie nodded, he loved the girl like family, they both dealt with similar issues in their home lives. “Do you like Eddie? You know, as in like him?”
Richie blushed. “No, where did you get that idea?”
“You’re always hugging him, you never stop staring at him, and yesterday you told him, in French, that he had beautiful eyes.”
“You said you didn’t understand what I said!”
“Well I lied, I guessed that you didn’t really want me to tell him, otherwise you would have simply said it in English.” She sighed. “Richie, what’s the real reason you started taking French class? You know I’m not going to judge you.”
Richie sighed. “I’ve been dealing with so much at home and then I come to school and he,” Richie leant back against the wall. “He makes me feel safe, and, I dunno, loved I guess? I just wanted a way to tell him how I feel and explain what’s happening at home. But it was way too painful to say it all in English, so I thought it’d be easier to tell him in another language.”
“Oh, Richie.” Beverly wrapped him in a hug. “That’s so sweet.” Richie gave her a half smile, and they began walking to their first class, which happened to be French.
———-
Eddie was just dozing off when he hears the taps at his window. At first he was scared that it was a leper, or a murderer, but he was assured it wasn’t when someone spoke up from behind the glass and curtains.
“Eddie? You awake?” Eddie pushed he covers off and got out of bed, he walked over to the window and opened the curtains.
The person at his window was Richie.
“C-can I come in?” Eddie could see the tears making their way steadily down Richie’s cheeks. He pushed the window open as quietly as he could and Richie clambered in.
“Rich, are you okay? What happened?” Instead of the answer Eddie knew he wasn’t going to get, Richie clutched him in a hug, openly sobbing.
Eddie guided Richie over to his bed and lates him down so that Richie’s head was resting above his heart. He never got answers, but he knew how to calm his best friend down. He liked listening to Eddie’s heartbeat, to confirm he wasn’t alone, and he like it when Eddie ran his fingers through his hair.
That’s exactly what Eddie was doing when Richie stopped crying and mumbled something.
“I’m sorry? I didn’t catch that.”
“Je t'aime. S’il te plaît, ne me quitte jamais.” (I love you. Please never leave me.)
Richie fell asleep soon after that, Eddie had no idea what the sleeping boy had said to him.
Over the next few months, Richie refused to stop talking in French whilst around Eddie. Beverly noticed he would constantly be blushing whenever Richie spoke the foreign words, in a thick accent. All of the Losers agreed that it was The only good impression Richie Tozier had ever done. During these months, Bev had to put up with Richie’s constant pining for Eddie.
She would always catch him calling Eddie a ‘magnifique petit tournesol’ (gorgeous little sunflower) or telling Eddie that he ‘avait l'air si mignon dans ce pull’ (looked so cute in that sweater’. He even said ‘Mon Amour.’ (My love) a few times
She was fed up of it. She knew without a doubt that Eddie had the same feelings towards Richie. So, during their 5th period geography class, Bev gave Richie a stern talking to.
“You need to tell him.”
“What?”
“Eddie! You need to tell him how you feel! I’m like 99% sure he reciprocates your feelings.”
“Yes Bev, but what about the 1% hmm?” Beverly rolled her eyes, they spent the rest of the lesson in silence.
A few weeks passed and Richie and Eddie found themselves alone at Loser’s Meadow, as the gang had dubbed it, watching the sun set.
“Eddie, I’m about to ramble in French and you just need to listen, you don’t need to understand.”
Eddie furrowed his brow. “Oh, okay.” He secretly loved it when Richie spoke French, however, he’d never admit it.
“Vous ne comprenez pas un mot que je dis en ce moment, et honnêtement? Je pense que c'est une bonne chose.
(You don’t understand a word im saying right now, and honestly? I think thats a good thing.)
J'avais besoin d'un moyen de pouvoir te dire ce que je ressens sans que tu me détestes.
(I needed a way to be able to tell you how i feel without you hating me.)
Parce que je sais que tu ne m'aimes pas en retour. Qui pourrait m'aimer de retour? Je suis un morceau de merde sans valeur.
(Because I know you don’t love me back. Who could love me back? I’m a worthless piece of shit.)
Vous voyez, vous n'avez absolument aucune idée de ce que je dis. En ce moment, tes joues sont d'un rouge vif avec combien tu rougis, et ton sourire n'a jamais été aussi beau.
(See, you have absolutely no idea what I’m saying. Right now, your cheeks are bright red with how much you’re blushing, and your smile has never been more beautiful.)
Tant que je continue à sourire et à parler, ce regard restera sur votre visage. Je ne veux jamais que tu arrêtes de sourire.
(As long as I keep smiling and talking, that look will stay on your face. I never want you to stop smiling.)
Ok, maintenant pour la vraie merde.
(Okay, now for the real shit.)
Eddie Kaspbrak, je t'aime depuis que nous avons neuf ans. Vous avez toujours été mon refuge, pour les nuits où il n'est pas sûr de rentrer à la maison, ou j'en ai fini avec le monde.
(Eddie Kaspbrak, I have loved you since we were 9 years old. You have always been my safe haven, for nights when it isn’t safe to go home, or I’m just done with the world.)
Vous êtes la seule personne à qui je fais confiance. Sauf ça. C'est la seule chose que vous ne saurez jamais, parce que je sais que vous ne ressentirez jamais la même chose.
(You are the one person I trust everything to. Except this. This is the one thing that you’ll never know, because I know you’ll never feel the same.)
Je t'aime Eddie Kaspbrak, je t'aime.
(I love you Eddie Kaspbrak, I love you.)”
Eddie giggled. “What the hell did you just say?”
“Oh, um, just a very detailed description of your mom’s vagina. I can retell it in English if you’d like?”
“Beep beep Richie.” Eddie said whilst laughing, as Richie sat admiring him, a wistful expression on his face.
A few days later saw Richie climbing into Eddie’s window at 3am with a bust lip and a black eye and tears streaming down his cheeks.
Without having to ask, Eddie pulled him into his bed and wrapped his arms around the crying boy. Richie wouldn’t stop muttering something in French until he fell asleep.
“Je t'aime.” Eddie made himself a promise that he’d look those words up as soon as the library was open tomorrow.
As soon as Richie left the next morning, Eddie pulled on a Red sweatshirt, one of Richie’s that he’d left behind years ago, and some shorts. He ran out of the house, making sure to kiss his mother goodbye before he left, and raced to the library.
He walked in and asked the receptionist to point him towards the ‘languages’ section.
He grabbed himself the first French dictionary he could find and flipped straight to the ‘T’ chapter, he already knew that ‘Je’ mean ‘I’.
Eddie gasped when he read the meaning. He dropped the book, causing a loud thud, and ran straight for the exit. He clambered back onto his bike and sped down the streets. He knew where Richie would be. The out of use highway bridge. He would always go there on a Saturday to smoke, listen to The Smiths and get away from his Parents.
Eddie threw his bike down as soon as he arrived, taking a puff from his asthma inhaler. “Richie?” He called out.
“Eddie?” He looked up to see Richie sat on the bridge’s ledge, feet swinging backwards and forwards. Eddie began to run up the hill towards the dark haired boy, whilst said boy stumbled down towards him. They met halfway.
“Eds, what are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be babysitting your mother or something.”
“Je t'aime aussi.” Eddie stated, not even bothering to tell Richie off for calling him Eds.
“What?” Richie looked unsure of what he’d just heard.
“Je t’aime aussi.” Eddie took a breath. “I love you too.”
Richie wasted no time in pulling Eddie in by his waist, connecting their lips. Eddie fisted his hands in the collar of Richie’s shirt. They pulled away a few moments later, in need of air, and rested their foreheads together.
This felt right. This felt like home.

WS Chapter 59- Call the Shots
Previous Chapter
Masterpost
The Dawn of the final week- only 7 days remain until the epilogue of Wandering Stars is posted. All of it is coming together, but the best is still yet to come! Keep a sharp eye for the final chapter- 60: Wandering Stars- and the epilogue to have the entire story. Especially the epilogue!
Red belongs to @theguardiansofredland
Ecto belongs to @cooler-cactus-block
Selene belongs to @to-dem-stars
(Mentioned) Storm belongs to @stormjay0
Tumblr media
“There she is.” Avon whispers, pointing to the center of the army. Nova guided them back to the battlefield, where they found the overlanders holding just fine without the wanderers. They retreated back a hill, and they can see cannon fire and arrows shot from the ground they hold. The very trap that Red watched Tango test on Impulse is open- used. He looks down, pulling out Fred from his pocket.
They haven’t lost anyone yet, and Red isn’t planning on losing anyone now. Nova is trying to get some soldiers to turn away, using that silver tongue of hers. But until the wanderers take out the head, take out Endo, there will be no peace. There will be no balance.
“How will we get to her when she’s in the middle of the whole army?” Avon questions. She bites her lip, seeing Storm take a hit to her black feathered wings. She only breathes out when Storm retreats to have her wounds tended to, to regain health and strength in the safety of the camp.
“Maybe I can help?” At this point, Ecto and Avon are used to Selene just appearing behind them. “I can isolate her, teleport her somewhere for you all to deal with her.”
“I thought you can’t teleport unwilling people?” Red questions.
“I don’t like to, no, but I can. It’s unsafe, and where exactly we land may not be right, but it’ll get the job done. I can go down, grab Endo, and bring her back here. Where you three can do whatever you need to.” Selene shrugs, taking Red’s hand.
“Isn’t there anything else we can do?” Red asks. He’s afraid of Selene teleporting right into the middle of the enemy. Grabbing their commander.
“Unless you guys have a better idea, I’m going.” Selene waits a second, then blinks out of existence. The next time the trio sees her, Selene is wrapping her arm around Endo’s throat. Ignoring the burning of the lavalike hair, and teleporting away.
“Where is she? Can you see them?” Red questions, looking around as seconds stretch into minutes. Selene never takes that long to get from A to B. She should be right here.
Ecto looks around, eyes flitting across the treeline, over the plains, past the desert. “There she is! On the beach!”
Red stands, spying his girlfriend. She’s in a fierce fight, teleporting around. Every swing that Endo takes at her, she disappears. Reappearing behind her and jabbing the hellspawn in the knee, or the throat. But she’s tiring quickly. And in one moment, Endo fakes her out. She swings, but turns around. Grabbing Selene by the hair and throwing her across the sand. Red screams, seeing Selene wince.
Red rips free of Ecto and Avon, running across the plains as fast as she can. Faster than Avon can fly, when aided by the streams of water at her feet. Racing towards her love. She reels her fist back, jumping and landing a blow that sends Endo flying across the sand. The water rolls off Red’s run, dipping into the sea.
He stands between Selene, wincing as she sits up on her elbows. His feet spread, strong and steady in the sand, fists clenched and jaw set. Looking over the rim of his glasses to Endo. “You messed with the wrong sorceress.”
Avon and Ecto reach the beach in time to see the fight. Red’s strikes against Endo are fierce, ignoring the burning sensation each blow deals his knuckles. Forcing Endo to retreat. Red kicks Endo down, turning back to his girlfriend. “Selene, are you okay?”
“I’m fine, Endo should’ve known she was in for a walloping.” Selene laughs, closing her eyes as she feels the soothing touch of Red’s hands.
“Red, watch out!” Ecto cries, causing Selene to look behind Red. And see the flaming arrow knocked into Endo’s bow, drawn back and aimed down the sights.
Loosed directly towards Red’s turned back. Selene and the other wanderers watch as the arrow bends and folds across the air, the blazing arrowhead sputtering and twisting towards it’s target, red flame reflecting in the ocean waves that gently lap on the beach.
In a time that no one, not even Avon or Jessie can respond, Selene does. She rips Red out of her grasp, shoving the kipling into the sand. Teleporting forward, grabbing the arrow and redirecting it’s route before snapping back out of this dimension. All in a matter of milliseconds.
When Selene reappears, her fingers are dug into Endo’s arms. The dangerous snarl of a sorcerer beyond anger glows bright in Selene’s eyes. “You’re going to regret that, bowl-cut.”
The two disappear. Red sits up, eyes darting across the ground. Looking for Selene. Finally, she reappears with Endo. Dozens of meters in the air, suspended high above the ocean. “She missed!”
But Selene is faster than that. Nearly losing her lover gave Selene energy to teleport again, and she kicks free of the struggling Endo and teleports. Ricocheting into the sand, weak but alive.
And Endo plummets into the sea. Ecto and Avon run to Selene, digging sand out from around her ears and hair. But Red’s eyes are on the sea. “She’s going to die out there. Hellspawns react to water like we do lava.”
“Who cares?” Avon spits. “She’s gone.”
“Go get her, Red.” Selene coughs, smiling weakly. “You’re pretty good at rescuing people from nearly drowning.” The sorceress offers a wink, before passing out.
Ecto and Avon look to Red, waiting to see his decision. Ecto opens her mouth, dry from so much fighting. “What are you going to do? Even if you manage to save Endo, she could still kill you.”
Red bites his lip, then turns to the sea. His home, his realm. “When Selene wakes up, tell her I wasn’t scared.”
The kipling dives into the water, the sound of the battle on land disappearing with the air. The water is quiet, calm compared to the war above. There’s no bloodshed, no near death experiences. Red forces the fear of the hermits, of their newfound friends being hurt or killed, out of his mind. He just focuses on swimming. Following the stony form as it sinks into the sea. Endo’s hair has cooled into stone, flat and cobbled, and her body is cracking and flaking as the water invades and freezes her up.
Red reaches out, scaled hand grasping for Endo’s limp form. A bubble floats free from Red’s lips as he growls, black and orange locks floating around him like kelp in the current. “I’m not letting you drown!”
His hand reaches out, and grabs Endo’s cold wrist. Blackened like obsidian, and just as cold. Touching Endo doesn’t burn like it did before, when he punched her. As soon as Red has a firm grip on the commander’s wrist, he shoots to the surface. Swimming as fast as possible, leaving behind a trailing jet of bubbles when he breaches into open air. Droplets of water combine into a stream, Red keeps a tight hold of his enemy as his magic gently drops him onto the sand.
Endo is still, but Red watches as cracks form in the stony outer shell of the hellspawn. Slowly, fire begins to spread across her body, until all that’s left still turned to rock is her spire-like horns. Endo looks up, gazing to see who saved her.
And she’s pissed to see Red.
Endo sits up, growling and retreating from Red. But her eyes speak of disbelief. “I am destruction, you are life! Fire and water! We are enemies! Why do you save me?” Endo shouts, hand striking against the sand beneath her. She was inches from death, the molten core of her being nearly extinguished. Had it not been for Red, she would have died.
“Because we need each other. To balance each other. And you aren’t all death. Do you know what happens when fire and water meet?” Red questions, wringing out his hair. He tries to ignore the sound of battle beyond him, focusing instead on this one.
“One is always destroyed.” Endo sits up, reaching for her weapon. But her axe was left at the bottom of the sea. She’s vulnerable- she should be dead. If their places were switched, Red would have been killed by now.
“But they make something new. They make cobblestone and obsidian. New land, space for new life. Entire islands can grow from lava and water. We rely on each other to build this world. We balance each other. Overworld and Nether.” Red offers out his hand, open and calm. A gentle smile. “We aren’t enemies.”
Endo stares at Red, turning to see the other wanderers. Her shoulders slump when she sees Nova standing there as well, whispering something into Avon’s ear. She turns, looking back at Red. He kneels down. “Come Endo, make the smart choice. End it all here. Call it off.”
“Make something new…” Endo whispers, reaching out. Taking Red’s hand and standing. Nova offers her a wide smile, the sharp look always in her eyes easing off. “The battle. I need to call off my army. The need to stop their destruction!”
“That’s… kinda the issue.” Ecto states. “Nova has been working on it, and she got a lot of the hellspawns to give up. But a few aren’t listening, and one retreated into the nether to get more supplies. Avon went after him.”
“But surely you can tell them to stop, right? Get the message?” Red looks to Endo, the hellspawn still dizzy from being underwater.
“I can tell the ones here to stop, I’m their commanding officer.” Endo nods to Nova, who sprints away towards the distant battle. To call it off. To spare any more lives from being destroyed. “But who went back into the nether? I can’t message across dimensions.”
“Blu. And Avon went after him” Red and Ecto turn, to where the nether first arrived. Red clutches his totem of undying. They have to go after them.

SPICE Launches Publicly Available Ecodesign Tool to Measure and Reduce the Environmental Footprint of Cosmetics Packaging
The Sustainable Packaging Initiative for Cosmetics (SPICE), co-founded by global beauty group L’Oréal and leading sustainability consulting firm Quantis, is proud to announce the launch of an online ecodesign tool to measure and reduce the environmental footprint of any cosmetic packaging throughout its life cycle. The publicly available SPICE Tool is the latest solution developed by the 25 members of SPICE created to shape the future of sustainable cosmetics packaging while addressing the issues that beauty and personal care companies face while trying to improve the environmental performance of their products’ packaging (see more about SPICE below). Along with the Tool, SPICE releases a set of best practice materials, including environmental claims guidelines.
A publicly-available tool to drive sustainable packaging innovation
The SPICE Tool solves one of the key sustainability challenges facing the beauty industry: embedding ecodesign into the packaging development process. This easy-to-use platform, with a Free demo version and a Pro version, makes robust environmental data accessible to packaging designers, giving them the insights they need to develop more resilient packaging designs. The Tool calculates a holistic environmental footprint across the full lifecycle of a product’s packaging (from production to end-of-life), covering 16 environmental indicators that assess impacts on climate change as well as resource depletion, water use, biodiversity and more. Beauty companies now have an easy way to measure, improve and communicate more credibly on their packaging’s environmental performance.
Learn more about the SPICE Tool.
"The SPICE Tool ushers the entire cosmetics industry into a new era of sustainable packaging innovation,” affirms Dimitri Caudrelier, CEO of Quantis. “It delivers robust environmental metrics and actionable insights for packaging designers to make resilient decisions. This is a huge step toward SPICE’s mission to collectively shape the future of sustainable packaging — and we’re just getting started!”
"As the co-founder of SPICE, L’Oréal is proud to see the initiative uniting the cosmetics industry around a shared vision of sustainable packaging,” adds Philippe Bonningue, Group Global Director of Sustainable Packaging at L’Oréal. “For more than a decade, we have been committed to innovating our packaging toward sustainability. We are pleased to share this experience to help develop the SPICE Tool so that, together, we can drive the industry’s sustainable transformation.”
SPICE delivers key resources to support a resilient future for beauty
In addition to the SPICE Tool, the initiative has released other valuable resources to support ecodesign decision making and improve the environmental performance of the entire packaging value chain:
Guidelines for environmental claims: cosmetics-specific guidance that establishes minimum requirements and strong recommendations for providing credible packaging sustainability information to consumers and other audiences;
Environmental datasets: metrics to populate the SPICE Tool database; and
The SPICE Primer: a communications brief presenting the mission and work of SPICE.
To encourage industry-wide use of the SPICE Tool and additional resources, SPICE has made them all publicly-available on the SPICE website. Visit www.open-spice.com.

Notes to the Editor | Industry organizations share enthusiasm for the SPICE Tool
“We are delighted to promote the SPICE Tool, a science-based, data-driven approach to measuring the environmental footprint of cosmetic packaging, to PCPC’s membership and the broader industry. We applaud the companies and organizations that are working in pre-competitive collaborations to develop tools and processes to ensure the responsible management of impacts that our industry creates.” - Lisa Powers, EVP Public Affairs and Communications, Personal Care Products Council
“The cost of developing a robust environmental footprinting tool has been a barrier for many small and medium-sized cosmetics companies that want to implement ecodesign in packaging development. By making the SPICE Tool publicly available, the SPICE Initiative helps the whole industry move forward, getting everyone on board to design the future of sustainable packaging. Not only by providing an innovative ecodesign tool but also by showing that cooperation is the most effective way to move forward. It is an important milestone in the ecological transition of the beauty industry.” - Patrick O’Quin, President, FEBEA (Fédération des Entreprises de la Beauté)
