1 Our Dating Sim

Korea Viki

Nerds in love, deadlines, gaming, teasing, pining tiny idiots, casual affection, linguistic oops, ADORABLE. If you haven't watched this, it's a must. A perfect short form KBL, an office set reunion romance featuring geeks that really suits 8 eps with no fluff and no chaff. Just comforting and yummy.

I adored every aspect from the casting to the pristinely simple premise to the quietly smooth execution. Sure it’s low stakes, but that makes it high domesticity and extremely warm and gentle. This is a fuzzy blanket of a story - a cozy BL. It lives in my rewatch pile and you know what’s best about it? Every single episode is in that pile. There’s no skipping with this one, it might be good natured and calmly sweet but it’s tight and the pacing is excellent.

Also recieves my 2023 award for best giggle.

2 I Cannot Reach You

AKA I Can't Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai

Japan Netflix

This classic friends-to-lovers BL is everything Japan does best. Angsty. Emo. Aching. Driven by real thirst. Yamato is deeply in love with his childhood bestie, Kakeru, and has been for ages, unable to hide his ungainly damaging high school need. He wants Kakeru in every way possible and it oozes off of the screen.

Kakeru is silly and a little simple, but not frenetic or overly camp about it. He is earnest, and genuinely wants to keep Yamato in his life which means giving a romance (and gayness) a fair chance. We watch him realize his affection and what form it can take in a truly authentic way.

This show was impossibly kind to both of its lead characters and I felt almost honored that I got to watch something so lovely and rare play out on my screen.

Also wins the best thirst award.

These were the 2 BLs that got 10/10 from me in 2023. The rest of these got 9/10 from me.

3 My School President

GMMTV gave us a classic high school set Thai BL with tropes like messy boys singing their feelings that made this one Love Sick for the modern age with all the gentle sweetness and pining ache, but none of the dated damaging tropes or issues. Who let my BL be this wholesome and funny? My favourite GMMTV BL offering to date. And yes, I've watched them ALL.

Received the Namgoong award for best wingman 2023.

4 I Feel You Linger in the Air

IFYLITA is an exquisite BL, from filming techniques to narrative framework. Steeped in history and family drama this is an elegant and classy BL. The main couple (both as a pair and individuals) were excellent, particularly Bright (Yai) whose eye-work acting style is a personal favorite of mine. It's a marker of how great it was that it's so high on my list despite the ending which was very much not what I wanted.

Additional accolade, sexiest moment of 2023 - (the oil scene).

You could try to fight me, but you'll have no grip.

5 Kiseki: Dear to Me

Taiwan Gaga & Viki

The plot is totally ridiculous and slightly unhinged. There’s a gum-ball machine of cameos, elder gay rep, great chemistry from all pairs (everyone is queer), and a KILLER side couple. It involves all the tropes under a very offhand framework of gay mafia gangs + food = love. As a result Kiseki is a poster child for Taiwanese BL, and I happen to love Taiwanese BL. Bonus? They also managed to END IT WELL, which we cannot expect from Taiwan.

Best side couple 2023!

6 Jun and Jun

A delightful office romance about an ex-idol who joins cubical life only to find his new boss is his first love. With a snappy (sometimes even raunchy) script, enjoyable sides, a pretty as peaches cast, and descent chemistry this show made up for in style what it lacked in substance. I like fluff. I loved this. I smiled every moment I was watching.

Best flirting 2023.

AKA "the tongue knows" award

7 The Eighth Sense

Korea Viki

This one is a bit chewy and sticky and less perfect than most KBLs. It’s got a bit of an age gap, country boy/city boy, stellar acting, complex characters, and leads with great chemistry and tension. This isn’t in the KBL bubble, there’s sharp edges and lots of triggers. For a BL the darkness of the content left me feeling unsettled (which is the only reason it didn't get a perfect score) but it has a glorious ending and that counts for a lot.

2023's most likely to appeal to non-BL watchers.

8 Unintentional Love Story

The lead, Gongchan (maknae of B1A4) is a fucking GIFT, who carried this show. He was luminous with extraordinarily expressive eyes, which he used to carry a killer plot and challenging role. Forced into a totally understandable betrayal, falling in love despite himself, put into a corner he can't get out of, the AGONY, the eyes EMOTING at us in PAIN. Driven by external conflict, social tension and pressure this story seems simple but it's actually refined and quite complex. I loved this show.

Best story structure 2023.

9 My Personal Weatherman

AKA Taikan Yoho

Japan Gaga

This is classic yaoi of the kind that really only works from Japan. Basically: boys who fell in love in college end up living together but both are so repressed they actually don't realize they're in love. It's high heat is well done, but it leaned into the "why don't they just talk for fuck's sake?" which is exacerbated by the fact that they're already fucking. Sure is sexy tho.

Best use of props 2023 for the shower of sheets.

10 Our Dining Table

AKA Bokura no Shokutaku

Japan Gaga

Lonely salaryman and talented cook gets accidentally adopted by a college kid and his little brother. It’s a quiet & cozy little parable of found family alleviating loneliness. It's lovely & sweet with the romance beats used to build a family relationship, not just couple intimacy. Special.

First prize for domesticity.

11 Laws of Attraction

Thailand iQIYI

This is a great gay suspense thriller with several solid couples, fun plot, killer characters, queer rep, and a happy ending. It’s tons of fun and I had an absolute blast watching it.

Charn wins my favorite character of 2023.

12 La Pluie

Thailand Viki

This BL takes to task the fated mates trope and what it means to have love chained intimately to predestination. It’s about how faith in destiny before choice diminishes the authenticity of emotion, relationships, and connection. This is a high concept to examine through the lens of a BL. With good chemistry and decent acting all around, plus some excellent high heat and representation of consent and a few other rare tropes, this one has to (like it’s sibling show My Ride) earn high marks.

Most interesting concept 2023.

13 The New Employee

So good, SO QUEER, so soft, a near pitch perfect office BL with conflict derived from that setting. Also found family and a lesbian bestie. This is what I wanted from this new crop of office set KBLs ALL ALONG. Rainbow rice cakes forever!

Best overall queer rep from Korea.

14 Step By Step

Thailand Gaga & YouTube & Viki

This was Thailand’s answer to The New Employee, and everything I loved about that show I loved about this one. This was an office romance between stern boss and sweet subordinate that felt more authentic to an office environment than previous Thai BLs of this ilk which added tension to the narrative and character development.

Chot wins best queer character 2023.

Most of this country-set BL had me feral for the beautiful broken city boy and his hot young farmer. Hyung romance, puppy/cat pairing, open frankness meets jaded reserve, language play, water hose frolicking, only one bed = all my favorite silly tropes.

he'd had indian food before and loved it, so it did not take any convincing for him to decide to make you some indian street food. he'd do it out of his own volition pretty often, actually. by now, he had mastered the art of various dishes, specially panipuri, which he would frequently make for you, and sometimes he'd even share some with his members.

if he sensed you growing homesick and missing your usual chinese cuisine, he'd go out of his way to seek out jun or minghao to ask what food may make you feel a bit better. he'd then take on the task of making you the most delicious street breakfast, jianbing, knowing it wasnt too difficult a task for him and that it was a meal you'd often have in your youth.

wonwoo -

wonwoo was quite known for his lack of ability in the kitchen, but that would not stop him from making you some laksa whenever you were feeling particularly homesick. despite not knowing how to make any other singaporean dishes, he'd have specifically mastered at least one in order to take care of you in such a domestic way whenever the opportunity arose.

jihoon -

never having been one to cook much (he'd much rather stick to washing dishes), he'd struggle a lot through making you some pastéis de nata for your anniversary, deciding to make a korean-portuguese fusion of meals to celebrate your relationship. ok, maybe he called mingyu over to help, but the joy in your eyes as you shared the meal with him had made it worth all of mingyu's nagging as he followed his instructions to the letter.

seokmin -

he's never been to spain, but he's had a few spanish meals throughout his life, so he'd quickly understand why you'd often complain about the lack of authentic spanish food near your shared apartment. would take it upon himself to learn how to make paella in the most perfect manner imaginable just to see a smile on your face.

mingyu -

making a pizza from scratch was easier said than done, but mingyu had taken on the task the moment you let him know of the fomo you felt at seeing him and his best friends explore your country of origin, italy. you'd watched nana tour happily, but still felt a bit off at knowing you couldn't be there with your boyfriend. but fear not! mingyu was about to bring the authentic italian experience to your door!

minghao -

he's been to the united states so many times by now that he just knows american food by heart. wouldnt even need a recipe to know how to make you some classic barbecue on a sunny afternoon. would even make an entire day out of it, grilling under the sun while you sunbathed next to him.

seungkwan -

seungkwan has always thought himself to be quite a good cook. or at least he was quite good at making korean food. japanese food was another story. he knew how badly you missed homemade sushi, never enjoying any from your nearby restaurants. he'd have to ask for your help at some point, but the end result would be the two of you sharing a nice moment making a meal together, so it all went according to plan.

vernon -

he doesnt know how to cook neither korean nor american food, but you best bet he'll try his hardest to make you traditional vietnamese food in the form of bun cha and bánh xèo. it looked easy and like it tasted good, how hard could it be? would try his bestest but eventually need to ask you for help completing the task. a+ for effort, though.

chan -

he already loves mexican food, so making it for you wouldnt even be something you'd have to request from him – he'd just do it on his own! he'd already mastered all types of street food, eventually opting to make you menudo, knowing how much you enjoyed that meal as a child.

Hello everyone, I decided as my debut long Saw shitpost, I thought I would decide what meal deals different Saw characters would opt for if they stumbled into a Tesco and were a bit peckish after setting up a few traps.

If you’re not from the U.K. or Ireland and are not familiar with the British & Irish institutions of a meal deal, it’s basically a packaged sandwich, pasta pot, salad, bit of sushi maybe alongside a snack item and a drink for a fixed price (it used to be around £3/ €4 but the shops are taking the piss now). Meal deals are considered a treasured institution here and are an indication of your personality. People judge your character based on what you get between two slices of cheap bread.

Judging on how we know Adam is quite an unorganised adult struggling to adult most days, I would assume he opts for high energy foods to keep his tastebuds happy. Cheese, spiced chicken and fruity drinks seem up his street. Plus, Vimto is a very Mancunian thing and if Saw was set in the U.K., there’s no way Adam would not be from Manchester.

Dr Lawrence (Larry) Gordon

I feel like because Larry is a doctor, he prioritises convenience but also eats healthily. I also imagine him to be meat free/ vegetarian so that explains the feta & greens salad (I don’t think he’d be vegan though, he seems like he loves proper cheese too much). Larry seems like he’d always be carrying breath mints or tictacs to minimise the cheese or coffee breath- nobody needs a waft of that when being told they’ve got 6 months left to live.

Amanda Young

Amanda is a busy lady planning traps and building contraptions designed to almost certainly kill people. She seems like she enjoys a bit of spice along with classic comfort combinations.

John Kramer

John seems like he’s mindful of what he puts into his body considering he’s consistently a salt & vinegar crisp away from death with the cancer and all. He’s also a very smart man so he would know the best value for money combination with a meal deal is getting an overpriced fruit smoothie for a drink.

Mark Hoffman

- All Day Breakfast sandwich (triple)

- Walkers Max Salt & Vinegar crisps

- Red Bull

Mark seems like he can’t get enough of bacon & sausage, even though it’s cold and not exactly very fresh. Maybe he’d even have a bit of HP brown sauce with it. Mark would also probably make immature jibes towards vegans and vegetarians because he’s that kind of man. Considering Mark works overtime setting up traps and evading capture, all he’d be drinking by the events of Saw 7 would be energy drinks.

Jill Tuck

- Egg & Cress sandwich

- Arla strawberry protein yogurt

- Bottle of water

Jill is a bit… bland. I’m sorry but I just have to say it. Egg & cress perfectly summarises Jill’s personality as seen in movies 4-7 between two pieces of bread.

Peter Strahm

- Deli style cheese & pickle sandwich

- Smoked salmon sushi pack

- Pepsi Max

Strahm made some good decisions, some regrettable ones and one very very dumb decision during his time in the Saw universe. Just like his track record with making poor decisions, I’d guess Peter would get some supermarket sushi as a snack with his meal deal- not very fresh nor authentic and will leave you wondering why you couldn’t have got a pack of reliable crisps or a chocolate bar instead.

Lindsey Perez

- Feta & sundried tomato pasta

- Propercorn sweet & salty popcorn

- Fanta orange

Perez is a great character and so she would get a meal deal to reflect that. Why do I also imagine Lindsey being veggie?

Eric Matthews

- Meatball marinara sub

- Walkers Monster Munch Pickled Onion crisps

- Red Bull

I feel like this choice accurately reflects Eric. It’s a combination that’s maybe reflective of an immature palette, maybe even a sort of guilty pleasure combination. I wonder if he’d put the monster munch hands (or feet) on his fingers and eat them like that.

Strictly Unprofessional - part 6 (alexia putellas x reader)

Summary: You’ve just landed your dream job as a photographer at FC Barcelona Femení. The only problem? You hooked up with the captain five years ago and haven’t seen her since.

Though you’ve only been at Barcelona a few months, you’ve come to realise that Alexia wins a lot of trophies. 

Every so often you’re tasked with taking photos of Alexia with her newest award for social media and that’s your job this afternoon. She’s changed out of her usual sports kit into a dark suit which she wears over a white tank top, and it’s a nice enough day that you’ve decided to take the pictures outside in front of the Barcelona crest on the wall by the main entrance to the training centre.

“I hate photoshoots,” Alexia confides in you, as you position her so that the crest is visible behind her.

“Really?” you ask, stepping back behind your tripod to check the framing of the shot on the camera display. “I’d have thought they’d be second nature by now. Just move slightly to your left please.”

Alexia shuffles across until you give her a thumbs up.

“I guess it’s like you say about doing shoots like this compared to taking pictures of us in training,” Alexia explains. “It’s much less natural. And I have to be the Alexia the world wants me to be, not the Alexia I actually am.”

You take a couple of test shots to check the lighting, before you ask, “And what would the actual Alexia do after winning an award?”

“I don’t know,” Alexia answers with a shrug. “Chill at home in my pyjamas with my dog?”

An idea pops into your head and you step out from behind the tripod to ask, “Do you trust me?”

Alexia frowns at you, curiosity in her eyes.

“Why?”

“Let’s do this shoot because it’s my job and we have to, but why don’t we do another one later?”

“I’ve just told you I hate photoshoots and your answer is to do another one?” Alexia says, arching an amused eyebrow.

“You can say no, but why not let me take some pictures of you at home with your dog and your pyjamas and anything else you like. Give me a chance to show the real Alexia.”

Alexia considers the suggestion but you can see that she’s still doubtful. You instantly kick yourself - she’s already made it clear she doesn’t like being photographed and you’ve probably just made her incredibly uncomfortable.

“Never mind, it was just a dumb idea…”

“I trust you,” Alexia interrupts you. “Let’s do it. Are you free tonight? I can order takeaway.”

“That sounds great.”

True to her word, when you arrive at Alexia’s apartment she greets you at the door with a takeaway menu for a local Thai restaurant and your camera bag is quickly dropped by the door and forgotten as you order dinner.

When the food arrives, you settle on Alexia’s couch and watch an episode of a new reality show you’ve heard some of the girls talking about. You haven’t seen it before but half an episode in you quickly realise why it’s popular - it’s just bad enough to be addictive. What makes it better is Alexia’s commentary, chiming in every so often with a joke or a scathing judgement. At one point, she sends you into a fit of giggles so hard that you choke on a noodle, and Alexia has to pause the show just to check that you’re okay.

As the credits roll at the end of the episode, Alexia starts to clear away the plates and you retrieve your camera bag. You’ve brought your smaller camera and none of the fancy equipment, wanting to stay true to your word about making this authentic rather than staged.

“Oh, so you wait until after I’ve got a stomach full of food to take pictures?” Alexia asks, returning to the room and eyeing up your camera as she sits back down on the couch.

“I thought this was about capturing the real Alexia,” you remind her. “Food baby and all.”

“Ugh, fine,” Alexia groans. She leans down to pick up Nala, before cooing at the dog, “You’ll just have to sit in Mami’s lap to hide her belly, won’t you Nala?”

You click the shutter of your camera a few times in quick succession, capturing a few photos of Alexia showering Nala with kisses and scratches. Alexia looks up at you, mouth pressed together in disapproval, and Nala uses the distraction as an excuse to leap off Alexia’s lap. You can’t help but take the opportunity to get a picture of Alexia glowering at you too, because her pout is just too cute.

“A little warning next time?” Alexia asks.

“Just pretend I’m not here. Act naturally.”

“Do you know how hard it is to try to act natural when somebody tells you to act natural?” Alexia speaks up. “Like which way do I normally cross my legs? Do I normally cross my legs at all?”

To emphasise her point, Alexia crosses and uncrosses her legs a few times each way, before she slumps back against the couch and props her feet up on the coffee table next to the empty takeaway containers. You snap a quick picture, then a few more when Nala jumps up onto the sofa again and nestles against Alexia’s thigh.

“Anyway, I have something special for this,” you tell Alexia, reaching into your camera bag and pulling out another camera, this one from your own personal collection that you would never take with you to work.

“Is that a Polaroid camera?” Alexia asks, her eyes lighting up. “I used to have one of those when I was younger. Then my sister took it and broke it and my parents refused to get me a new one.”

“Watch the TV again,” you direct Alexia.

“You know, this is the most staged unstaged photoshoot ever,” Alexia jokes, though she does as instructed and turns her attention back to the television.

“Are you this mouthy with other photographers too?” 

“No,” Alexia says, glancing up at you with a smile just starting to creep onto her face. “Only you get this honour.”

With the Polaroid camera in your hands, you point it at Alexia and get a quick photo of her mid-smirk.

“Hey, I wasn’t ready!” she protests, as the camera spits out the undeveloped picture.

“Exactly, that’s the whole point.”

You round the coffee table and sit down beside Alexia on the couch on the side not occupied by Nala as you wait for the photo to develop. The picture slowly appears, of Alexia caught slightly off-guard in a half smile, her gaze fixed at something behind the camera. She’s looking at you, you realise, and you stare at the photo in awe as it finishes coming into focus. It’s like you’re holding a tiny piece of your friendship in your hands, the picture capturing that bond between you more than it captures Alexia herself.

Alexia must see that too, because she asks, “Do I always look at you like that?”

“Like what?”

The silence between you is tense. It feels like the air in the room could ignite, though whether it’ll be a fire of passion or a flaming inferno of destruction is still yet to be decided.

“Never mind,” Alexia says, shutting down the conversation but leaving your curiosity piqued. “It’s my turn.” 

Alexia reaches for the camera, but you hold it out of her reach.

“I don’t think so.”

“Come on,” Alexia pleads, leaning across your lap and plucking the camera from your outstretched hand. “You had to know I’d ask at some point. I’m your apprentice after all.”

“I only have limited film for this camera,” you try to make excuses. “We can’t waste it.”

“Then a selfie,” Alexia says, flipping the camera around so that the lens points at you both. “So we’re both in it.”

“I don’t know…”

“Come on, a selfie is the opposite of a photoshoot,” she pleads with you, lifting the camera and stretching out her arm.

You turn your head to look at her, and whine, “Alexia…”

You hear the click of the camera and know she’s probably caught you at your worst, payback for all the photos you’ve taken of her over the last few months. Satisfied with her actions, Alexia lets you take back your camera but keeps the newest photo as it develops, maybe scared you’re going to rip up her latest attempt at photography if you don’t like the result.

The image finally comes into focus and you look at it as she holds it.

It’s raw in a similar kind of way to the one you took of her. The angle of the selfie and the lack of a front facing camera to aid means that only three quarters of Alexia’s face is in view, but while she’s smiling at the camera, the image of you is a side profile because you’re looking at Alexia with a look of what can only be described as adoration in your eyes.

You suddenly realise what the question she asked earlier meant.

“Do I always look at you like that?”

“Like what?” Alexia parrots your earlier question back to you.

Feeling bolder than perhaps she was, you respond breathlessly, “Like I want to kiss you.”

You hear Alexia’s breath catch in her throat, before she answers, “Sometimes. Do you?”

“Do I what?” 

Though you’re almost certain you know what she’s asking, you need to hear her say it.

“Do you want to kiss me?”

“Sometimes,” you answer just as elusively as she did.

“How about now?”

You really do. Alexia is right there, it would be so easy to lean across and close the gap. And here, alone in Alexia’s apartment with only Nala as your witness, is the most privacy you’ve had since you found yourselves in a hotel room in Ibiza five years ago.

But something is nagging you at the back of your mind, telling you that this isn’t a good idea. Your thoughts are clouded by Alexia’s proximity and you need a clear mind to decide if you’re willing to put it all at risk for a chance at happiness.

“Alexia,” you start. “I…”

I like you, is what you should say. I want to kiss you. I want to be with you.

But what you actually end up saying is, “I should go home.”

“Fuck,” Alexia says, panic in her eyes. “I’ve made you uncomfortable. Forget I said anything.”

“No, it’s fine!” you’re quick to say. “I’ve just … got a lot to do tomorrow. I should get back home.”

You get to your feet and start to collect your photography equipment, busying yourself with that to avoid having to look Alexia in the eye. You don’t know what you might do, what mistakes you might make, if you allow yourself even a second to look at her.

“Did I do something wrong?” Alexia asks. “Did I take it too far?”

“No,” you try to tell Alexia. “You did nothing wrong. It’s all on me. My head’s a mess. I promise it’s not your fault.”

“You really don’t have to go,” Alexia says. “We can watch another episode. I promise I won’t do anything, or say anything, to make it weird.”

The problem is that it’s not Alexia that you don’t trust not to make it weird.

Do you want to kiss me?

Alexia’s words echo in your ears and your brain is screaming that yes, you do want to kiss her. And you’re not a hundred percent certain, but you get the feeling that Alexia probably wouldn’t push you off her if you did.

What if you said fuck it to your inhibitions and let yourself indulge? Would it really be so bad after all?

The temptation to make a mistake you might never come back from is too great if you stay. 

As you stand by Alexia’s front door, camera bag slung over your shoulder, you have no idea how to say goodbye. But the hesitation gives you time to think, time to let your eyes drop to Alexia’s mouth and wonder again about kissing her.

What if…?

No. You can’t.

To stop yourself from at least attempting to kiss Alexia, you step into her personal space and give her a quick one-armed hug, too long to be fleeting but not long enough to actually mean anything.

“I’ll see you tomorrow? At Camp Nou?”

Alexia nods, her expression impossible to read. 

“See you tomorrow,” she replies.

You can’t get out of Alexia’s apartment fast enough.
