The Disney Renaissance (1994-1999)
Originally posted on September 5th, 2014
The Lion King (1994)
The Lion King is both the most critically and commercially successful of all the Disney Renaissance films. It was also the highest grossing animated film ever at the time of its release, and today it is still the third highest grossing animated film of all time. The pageantry on display in this film mimicked classic Hollywood musicals in all of their most grand aspects, while simultaneously drawing on Shakespearean high drama for the story. It is unquestionably the greatest film of the Disney Renaissance, whether it is your favorite film from the era or not. This movie marked the peak of the Renaissance a mere five years after its beginning, and unfortunately, the next five years would come with major fluctuations in quality.
Pocahontas (1995)
Pocahontas was directed by Mike Gabriel (director of the forgettable The Rescuers Down Under) and Eric Goldberg (who had worked on other Disney films before). This was Disney’s first attempt at telling a story about two real people from history, so there were inevitably going to be some difficulties. Their attempt to adapt the tale of a young Native American woman falling in love with an English settler was ultimately a failure, and it is a failure that can be summed up by a single song in the movie.
youtube
Yes, you just heard a Disney song about the systematic killing of Native Americans by English settlers. There are other issues with this film of course (the time wasted on critter adventures, Pocahontas magically learning English, a matriarchal tree, etc.), but the biggest problem with this film is its simultaneous dedication to Disney whitewashing and to accurately portraying the English settlement.
This film isn’t worthless though; Colors of the Wind is a good song, and the animation sequence is one of the most beautiful sequences in Western animation. The animation in this film is also fantastic; I personally see it as the best animation of any Disney Renaissance film. Pocahontas was still commercially successful though, despite being a total critical flop, and despite its failings, it is still fondly remembered by many (nostalgia blinded) people.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
This is the darkest film of the Disney Renaissance. Because of this, it is also almost my favorite. Almost. Ultimately, The Lion King beats it out because of the way The Hunchback of Notre Dame ended (and this is a subject that I will delve into in a later post).
Hunchback was a critical success, even though it made less than Pocahontas. It dealt with many of the issues plaguing the Catholic Church in the 14th century, such as their treatment of the poor, and the persecution of gypsies. It also dealt with sexism in the Church and the experiences of the outcast. The animation was also heavily inspired by Gothic art styles, and Gothic cathedrals served as some of the most beautiful settings of any Disney film.
Hercules (1997)
Yeah, fuck this movie. And its reviews. And its sales.
Next.
Mul(((((999…..
Okay, fine, I’ll talk about Hercules. Despite my previous statement, I don’t actually hate this movie. It’s got great animation with a unique style, the music is solid, and it has fantastic voice acting. But every other film from the Disney Renaissance is also beautifully animated with a good score and solid voice acting. So, why the hell do people remember this movie so fondly?
I mean, it has one truly great character (Hades), but almost all the other characters follow “heroic” tropes to a T. Hercules is your standard good guy hero, Phil is your standard trainer, Zeus is an absent, uninvolved god, and Megara… Well Megara is actually a pretty cool antihero/seductress with a complicated history. BUT THAT’S STILL ONLY TWO GOOD CHARACTER!
And there’s a reason for this. Hercules was made because Ron Clements and John Musker had had their followup to Aladdin shot down by Jeffrey Katzenberg. Since they still wanted to make their initial idea, they pitched a film that they knew would be commercially successful in order to get their followup greenlit automatically. The commercially successful film they pitched was Hercules. The followup they wanted to make was Treasure Planet, a film I believe is just as well made as any of the other Renaissance films.
Mulan (1998)
$120,620,254 gross sales. Adoration from critics. Everyone loves this film, and I am no exception. The story is great, the music is memorable, Ming-Na Wen and Eddie Murphy steal the show, and the animation is a beautiful blend between the traditional Disney style and Chinese styles. I seriously can’t say anything bad about this, and anything good I have to say about this film has already been said by others.
Tarzan (1999)
The last film of the Renaissance, Tarzan, was a commercial success, and fared well critically as well. This was the first Disney film to incorporate CGI through a technique known as “Deep Canvas,” which allowed the artists to create digital backgrounds that looked like traditional animation. Tarzan was also (in)famously scored by Phil Collins, and the success of that score is incredibly controversial.
Despite the failings in the music department, Tarzan is still a good film. Its coming of age storyline is brilliant, Clayton is a sinister villain, and the tone of the film is surprisingly dark (the tone is hidden by the cheesy Phil Collins music though). In fact, I’d argue that Tarzan would be the greatest Renaissance film if its score had fit better with the overall tone. Still, Tarzan is a memorable film, and I enjoy it despite its flaws.
Post Renaissance (2000-now)
Tarzan is considered the last film in the Disney Renaissance for one reason: the next three movies Disney released were not musicals. They were all commercial and critical successes (except Dinosaur, which was only commercially successful), but they didn’t feel the same as the films of the Renaissance. Personally, I would argue that the Renaissance ended after Mulan. Tarzan’s score makes it feel just as cheesy as the decade it was from, and even though Hercules was cheesy, it was cheesy because it amplified all the tropes of the Renaissance to the nth degree. Tarzan was cheesy because it called on a popular singer to sing and write all the songs, and said popular singer (who was the essence of 80s pop) ended up making the film feel so much like the worst films of Disney’s competitor, Dreamworks.

fahed and reem are the parents to five children. the prolonged attack on gaza and subsequent destruction of everything they've known has forced them to fundraise, but the oldest, sahar (@fahedshehab9), has been making videos to help spread the word. the thought of a young girl advocating for her family's survival in front of the world is as heartbreaking 10 months into cruel bombardment as it was on october 7, october 6, 2023, 2014, 2008, and every single day since 1948 when palestine was first shattered.
this is the current progress of their fundraiser. sahar has done a wonderful job spreading the word so far, but as of posting, they still need €18,634 to meet their goal.
please help her and her family by sharing, reposting with the link, and donating what you're able!
EDIT (AUG 29): due to circumstances explained below, the goal has been increased to include her aunt and her family. please continue to donate and share!
CURRENT PROGRESS (09/01):
€46,307 / €85,000 -- €38,693 left to go!

Matthew Tkachuk on friend, former teammate Johnny Gaudreau: ‘I’m going to keep his memory alive’
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Matthew Tkachuk, reigning Stanley Cup champion and prince of South Florida, was bouncing off the walls at the Baptist Health IcePlex on Tuesday. He delivered light cross-checks to his Florida Panthers teammates and led the pack in conditioning drills, and his mouthguard received its customary chomping.
It appeared to be business as usual for the young star who is always occupied with something, whether it be selling the sport in Florida or partying with the Stanley Cup all summer.
Right now, that might be for the best.
Tkachuk’s dream summer turned into a nightmare when he learned of Johnny Gaudreau’s death on Aug. 29.
Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were killed in a traffic crash in Oldmans Township, N.J., outside Philadelphia. Police said the brothers were riding bicycles when they were hit by a driver trying to pass an SUV on a two-lane road.
Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau played together for six seasons with the Calgary Flames, a couple of American kids taking western Canada by storm, often on the same line. The two left the Flames in the summer of 2022, Gaudreau signing as a free agent with the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Tkachuk was sent to the Panthers in a blockbuster deal.
Tkachuk, whose life has been a whirlwind for months, hasn’t had enough time to process Gaudreau’s death in the month since it happened.
“You put so much work into a season, that’s where all of your energy goes,” Tkachuk said. “Then you make the playoffs. You make the Final. And then, when it was over, we got to celebrate this summer. It was the greatest summer of my life, and some of the most incredible memories were made. But then, right at the end of this amazing summer, the unthinkable happened.”
Gaudreau took Tkachuk under his wing in Calgary, and a forever friendship was formed. Understandably, Gaudreau is on Tkachuk’s mind every day, but that was already the case long before Gaudreau was gone.
“Ever since I left Calgary and came to Florida, all I ever do is tell stories about Johnny,” Tkachuk said. “At one point, I was probably telling the guys down here a Johnny story once a week. I was always talking about him, about something funny he had done, something he had done in practice, whatever. He was the kind of guy that you could never get out of your mind, and I hated being away from him.”
Gaudreau and Tkachuk talked all the time after leaving Calgary, and while they badly missed playing together, they looked forward to having another opportunity to wear the same jersey and maybe even play on the same line.
The NHL 4 Nations Face-Off — a tournament among the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden — will be in less than five months in Boston and Montreal. Then, in 2026, NHL players will return to the Olympics for the first time since 2014. Between the NHL balking at its season being delayed and COVID creating havoc with the 2021-22 schedule, NHL players have not participated in the Olympics for a decade.
“You have to understand that Johnny and I talked about being in the Olympics together a lot,” Tkachuk said. “In 2022, when they canceled us from being in the Olympics, we were so upset. We were both playing really well together in Calgary and we thought we were going to be so good in the Olympics. We talked about it all the time. That was a tough one. He had played for Team USA in so many big events, and I know it meant a lot to him. Obviously, we would have been together this time. It’s tough to think about right now. But I know he would have been excited for those tournaments and he will be on my mind during those times even more than he usually is.”
Tkachuk doesn’t require nor ask for any sympathy. He simply misses his friend.
“Trust me, I feel like I’m the luckiest guy in the NHL,” he said. “I get to play a sport that I love, and it’s my job. And I get to play it (in Florida), which, in my opinion, is the best place in the league. The lifestyle. The fans we’ve developed down here. The way our fan base is growing and growing every day. You wouldn’t want to be anywhere other than this place. It really is the best, and I’m so lucky to have this life. I came here to win a Cup. I looked at this group of guys and I knew it could be done. I knew something special could happen. I guess I was right.”
Tkachuk’s emotions will surely peak in a few weeks, when the Panthers play on Oct. 15 in Columbus for the Blue Jackets’ home opener. In lieu of typical opening night ceremonies, the Blue Jackets will honor the memory of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.
“I really haven’t thought about that night too much just yet,” Tkachuk said. “But I have a feeling that it’s going to be pretty tough to play that night. It’s not just me that’s feeling it, obviously. The whole league is feeling it right now. Anyone who knew him is feeling it even more.”
Tkachuk is busy preparing his Panthers for a chance to claim back-to-back championships. Dynasties aren’t much of a thing in the modern-day NHL, but the Panthers have won the Cup once, have been to the Final two years consecutively, and their core remains in its 20s.
“We can do something special,” Tkachuk said.
Even still, a small part of his mind remains focused on the international tournaments, where he’ll never get the chance to play with Gaudreau again. But he does have a chance to honor Gaudreau during those tournaments.
“It’s been a really, really, really tough few weeks,” he said. “I still can’t even believe it. It’s just so sad. All of it.”
While sitting and looking down at the Panthers practice facility, Tkachuk’s face alternates emotions, his mind churning.
“You know, the thing that’s getting me through this is those stories I was telling you about,” he said. “Those stories about him I tell all the guys constantly. I’m going to keep those stories with me forever and I’m going to keep his memory alive in everybody by continuing to tell those stories.”
He hopes to generate another story involving Gaudreau when the Olympics arrive.
“He would have been there and wearing that Team USA jersey meant a lot to him,” Tkachuk said. “It means a lot to me, too. When I’m there, he will be on my mind the whole time. Even more than usual. And I’ll be telling stories.”
#since it's paywalled i've decided to just copy the whole thing over so everyone can know how much matthew loved johnny#i am so sad#'i hated being away from him' 😭😭😭#johnny gaudreau#matthew tkachuk#matthewjohnny#2425

What influenced your artstyle? Are there any artist that you took heavy influence from? Has it always been the same artists, or, if your artstyle looked different way back when, different artist throughout the years?
ohhh yeah no my art style has changed a lot through the years! its funny because it used to be a lineless style for awhile! then it fluctuated to lineart, now its back to mostly the lineless!
I think my art really came into its own in 2019 when I played Smile for Me and discovered @/yugsly art style and fell in love. their my biggest inspiration, I admire all their work and take a heavy inspiration from them for sure

Boston Marathon bombing victims rip Tsarnaev’s latest legal appeal
**So due process and the right to appeal is a "cash cow" now? This whole attitude is why some of the appeals are being filed in the first place. There SHOULD have been a change of venue, Judge O’Toole SHOULD 100% be removed, 2 of the jurors lied in their pretrial screenings so the penalty phase SHOULD be retried. **
BOSTON — Boston Marathon bombing victims say Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s attempt to get his old legal team back together is a waste of taxpayers’ money.
Tsarnaev, locked up in a Colorado Supermax, has an Aug. 21 court date in Boston where his lawyers will begin to try to keep him out of the electric chair.
That status conference is before federal Judge George A. O’Toole Jr.
“Who’s paying for this?” said Liz Norden. “He blew up innocent people and we’re told it’s no one’s business to know how much his lawyers cost? It makes no sense.”
The Department of Justice has denied a Herald public records request for Tsarnaev’s legal bill while his case drags on in the courts.
Norden has attempted to make every hearing in a solemn show of support for the victims of the bombing, including her two boys who lost their right legs that terrible day on Boylston Street on April 15, 2013.
Marc Fucarile, woke up in a hospital with his right leg mostly gone and his left one possibly next, said Monday the seemingly never-ending case against the bomber is an insult to the city.
“Stop wasting taxpayers’ dollars just for greedy lawyers,” he said of Tsarnaev’s appeal of his death penalty sentence. “He was already judged by his peers. There should be no question he deserves the death penalty.
“Let’s just cut off this cash cow,” he added.
The bomber has questioned the bias of two jurors in his 2015 death penalty trial and won a partial victory in the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.
The appeals court stated “the district court’s investigation fell short of what was constitutionally required” over this one issue. If bias is shown, the court adds, Tsarnaev will be “entitled to a new penalty-phase proceeding.”
The alleged bias is over social media postings about the bombing made by two jurors.
The appeals court has added “regardless of the outcome, (Tsarnaev) will spend the rest of his life in prison.”
Now the bomber is moving quickly to assemble his legal team, with Boston attorney William Fick filing an appeal to return to the case now that he is in private practice.
Tsarnaev is “legally indigent,” Fick writes, and the courts should allow him back on the case “in order to serve the interests of justice, judicial economy, continuity in representation.”
His motion also states attorneys Daniel Habib, Deirdre von Dornum, and Mia Eisner-Grynberg from the Federal Defenders of New York, are on his side of the bench. It’s not clear if all the lawyers are working pro bono or submitting a bill.
The New York group does offer free help to “persons charged with federal crimes who cannot afford to hire an attorney.”
The case remains in the Seaport federal court before the same judge as the alleged bias of two jurors is re-examined, the court announced Monday. Still, Tsarnaev does have a chance to avoid death.
The bombing killed Martin Richard, 8; Krystle Campbell, 29; and Lu Lingzi, 23. More than 260 people were injured and maimed. MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, 27, was shot execution-style days later by Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan, killed hours later in a firefight in Watertown.
Boston Police Officer Dennis Simmonds, 28, injured in the Watertown shootout, died in April 2014.
Tsarnaev is locked up in the Federal Correctional Complex Florence in Colorado — a Supermax called the “Alcatraz of the Rockies.”

As requested, sharing my thoughts on Macklemore’s “Hind’s Hall.” I hope y’all hear me.
While we celebrate his effort, let’s honor that people came before him. Let’s honor that he wouldn’t have been able to make that song without hip-hop’s long legacy of this kind of music activism.
Also stop calling Black music a “distraction” when my ancestors sang their way through struggle and got strength to carry on because of music. We can do the same.
I know what this moment in hip-hop did for me, the energy it brought me, and the work continues as I blast “Not Like Us” in the background.
Free the land, free the people ✊🏾🇵🇸

——————— Just curious, was Macklemore the first artist you heard speak about Palestine in song/performance?

2016 & 2017 Lover Diaries Transcripts
Aug 29, 2016- Nashville, TN
This summer is the apocalypse.
Jan 3, 2017- London, England
I get all scared about the future because so much has changed in the last year of my life. I mean this time last year I was living in LA, getting ready for Grammys and now, I’m essentially based in London, hiding out trying to protect us from the nasty world that just wants to ruin things We have been together and no one has found out for 3 months now. I want it to stay that way because I don’t want anything about this to change or become too complicated or intruded upon. But it’s senseless to worry about someday not being happy when I am happy now. Ok. Breathe.
(2003 • 2004 • 2005 • 2006 • 2007 & 2008 • 2009 • 2010 • 2011 • 2012 • 2013 • 2014 • 2015 • 2016 & 2017)
#lover diaries*#note: dates and place names are from my notation not taylors#and i didnt transcribe the specific lyrics bc the formatting was giving me a headache#so go to taylorpictures.net if you want those

2023 Disney Film Tournament
All films that count under my criteria are under the cut, as well as my poll posting schedule. If you feel like a film should or should not be included, feel free to send an ask!
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the automatic winner of the 1930s section because it’s the only one.
Positive propaganda is allowed, I just may not publish it all if there is heavy volume.
Winners of the year have a sun emoji and are italicized, winners of the decade have a moon emoji and are bolded, the final winner will be blue and have a star emoji.

Favorite Over All the Decades - Week 13, Oct 3 2023
The list of contenders for this poll will update as the results roll in.
1930s - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
1940s - Fantasia (1940)
1950s - Alice in Wonderland (1951)
1960s - One Hundred and one Dalmatians (1961)
1970s - The Aristocats (1970)
1980s - The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
1990s - Mulan (1998)
2000s - The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)
2010s - Tangled (2010)
2020-2022 - Encanto (2021)
Overall Winner: Mulan (1998)
The NEW 2020s poll, with the winners from 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 as the contenders, will start January 1, 2024.
If the overall 2020s movie winner changes, I will then hold a new decades poll on January 8, 2024.
The 2020s poll from 2024 and onward (lol) will just have the top movie from each year go against the new ones. If we run out of slots available for all the new movies with the previous winners, I will hold a poll with just the new movies, get a winner, and then run it against the old year winners of the 2020s.
If I remember to run this tournament into the 2030s, I will do an Over the Centuries poll comparing the favorite of one century of Disney animation to another :).
My main blog is @deathsmallcaps and my art blog is @patheticbatman if curiosity strikes you.
I’m pretty sure there is another poll going on like this, I’m just running this one for my own amusement, and because I like to think about these in terms of decades.
