Girl I didn't know you were into 911 lol. Who are your favourites, what are your opinions?

i just binged it for funsies just recently so same. I have been live reacting to it to @radlymona i know shes so sick of me 🤣! i would say my favs are Maddie (fantastic, she made her way into my top favorite chars ever which was unexpected for me), Hen, & Buck. They're really fun and I like that the show's main heart is the relationships between everyone, bc with such a silly premise at times (so many of the 911 calls are ridiculous in a good way), you need those really solid chars to keep you watching. I will say, it took me many seasons to warm up to Buck. I legitimately don't think he had any personality or development until season 4. That was a struggle considering they consider him the "main" of the ensemble. I still joke the most interesting part of Buck is his sister. But now that I'm fully caught up, I think they finally have been giving him satisfactory backstory and personality, kind of, and now season 8 premiere is setting up some more development for him, which is long overdue. For the main, I was shocked it took so long for them to get past "he just is really bad at dating" as his only personality trait.

Hen and Karen have probably less of the engaging storylines for me with the fostering stuff, but its still cute and I really like them as a couple. Athena is hard carried by Angela Bassett, so she always gets a pass for the crazy shit she does sometimes lol.

I think going into the show I was also definitely expecting the main fan ship (Buck and Eddie) to be more fan shit as per tumblr (I legit forgot they canonically made Buck bi as well), but the longer I watched the more I was legitimately like oh no these two are insane and also need to stop terrorizing the women of LA stat. And also save us from introducing random women every other episode for them that disappear as soon as they arrive 😭 ?? Like please stop that its just painful.

One of the learning curves for sure was that this show has WEIRD AS HELL PACING LMAO!! I'VE NEVER SEEN A SHOW W WORSE PACING! They love introducing and dropping just as quick a plot point or a character, and sometimes randomly bringing it back up seasons later and you have to play along like you remember someone who showed up for fifteen seconds. I half heartedly try to remember shit about people who aren't in the main ensemble, but its so difficult 😭 I couldn't even tell you all the women Buck dated beside Abby and Taylor, and Taylor is only lucky bc I legit liked her as a char. Theres just too much insane shit they throw around and take away too quickly like let it breathe besties.

So yeah, general writing is not fantastic or anything but the show is hella fun and they seemed to have accidentally stumbled into really great character relationships?? Like I live for Maddie and Buck scenes, Hen and Chim duo, Josh and Maddie chats, and Buck and Eddie are like a whole other analysis lol, but they're all great relationships the writers cooked up somehow.

I headcanon that Athena starts an anti-Percy account after he starts dating Annabeth and Poseidon decides to be like fuck that bitch and makes an pro-Percy account and the mortals are all confused as to why these two accounts are feuding or why they're even based on that former child terrorist from a few years back.

Athena gets Zeus and Ares on her side, Hera doesn't join if only because while it is anti-Percy it is also somewhat pro-Annabeth and like her son, Hera will always have beef with a child. Poseidon gets Triton and the Sea Fam to join his side by simply mentioning how Athena is their competition, Hades joins because it's a good chance to beat Zeus and laugh at him, Aphrodite joins only because it's not slandering her fav ship, Apollo and Hermes think Percy is cool and also join Poseidon in his pro-Percy account. The rest just stay neutral or still haven't decided.

One demigod somehow finds the accounts and tells every camper about them. It's an anonymous decision to join the pro-Percy account (man has been nearly every single being in that camp's crush, he def has a fanclub). After the Giant War, when things calm down, Amphitrite post a video of her, Sally, Paul, Poseidon, and their children+ their SO's having a nice day together with the main focus being Percy ofc. This restarts the silent war between the pro-anti Percy accounts. The Romans are hella confused and slightly terrified with the way every single Greek camper except Percy, who face palmed, took out a device at the same time and started typing.

as for music, you two are definitely similar in that aspect as well. nina adores hyperpop and breakcore. she also dabbles a bit in alt/indie and rock. she's a major fan of poppy! big fan of nightcore as well. nightcore songs are her jam and she has an entire playlist on youtube dedicated to all of her favorites. and she'll totally make you a playlist! two, actually. a sappy love playlist for expressing her feelings, and a playlist full of songs she thinks you would enjoy.

she can listen to you talk all day, no joke. she also has a habit of rambling, so you two could somehow hold a conversation with each other about two vastly different topics. there is rarely a time when she'll ask you to be quiet, though she does enjoy the quiet moments she spends with you as well.

will 100% ask to do your hair and makeup if you're comfortable with that type of stuff. might even take you out shopping for cute outfits as well if that's your jam. shopping is a fun pass time for her, and she'd love to include you in it.

As for the keeping people at arms length, I already did sort of talk of my general opinion on this which is that he was already a family so to speak with Hen and Chim they all just needed Buck’s openness to sort of force them to admit it (and also his lightness because those three may all be fun on their own but together they somehow feel heavy while Buck adds that youthful fun, so 1.04 and that car wash scene)

I do think that the help scene (which is one of my fav scenes of 911 and also TV in general, I gasp every time) is not an example of Bobby keeping them at arms length because he does not want to care about them specifically but more about him not wanting to talk about those things because he doesn’t want help

And I am putting a read more here because I will discuss suicide next and this may be triggering to some people, so please be careful

Bobby in Season 1 was planning on commiting suicide and he was actually serious about it in the beginning and then slowly throughout the season began to heal and find his will to live again - beginning with the help scene

And this is why Bobby initially kept them at arms length, one) because he did not want to leave anyone behind and 2) people who seriously plan (he wasn’t even considering it, he was planning it, pretty sure his will was always up to date and in his office as was a suicide note, probably some prep for funeral etc., the way he was talking about it, he most definitely had all of it planned out to a T) to commit suicide do not ask for help because well, here is the thing: if you ask for help that means you still have some will to live and some hope that you can be helped and people who seriously plan to commit suicide - or well, people who plan for reasons like Bobby’s and plan on doing it with the seriousness that Bobby did it (because I believe 100% that had he not helped all those kids and had he not had that conversation with Athena he would have done it) DO NOT ASK FOR HELP BECAUSE THEY CONSIDER THEMSELVES BEYOND HELP

They are of course not. No one ever is. It just sometimes takes a while and a few tries!

But yeah, I love this scene because this is the moment where some part of Bobby decided: I do not want to die! I care about these people and I do not want to leave them!

And that makes him ask for help and that is very beautiful and yeah, also why I don’t think

Mark of Athena Re-read

Hey guys! If you’ve been keeping up with my last couple of posts, you’ll know I’ve been re-reading the Heroes of Olympus (HoO) series by Rick Riordan, starting with the Son of Neptune. If you want to my thoughts on it (spoilers included) and my background with the series, click here. I made a little bit of rant post about my feelings about the HoO series overall so far and you can find that here! This post will be about the Mark of Athena (MoA) and as always, spoilers abound.

Soooo y’all...I think this book is worse than the Lost Hero. I feel so bad for saying that bc I hated tLH (Like I’d give that book 2 stars) but god, this was so bad. No wonder I forgot what happened when I originally read it. Before I get into it, I will say I’m usually not negative in my ‘reviews’-I’ll give credit where it’s due (I did that in tSoN with Hazel and Frank who weren’t really my fav characters to start with) but this book has very little redeemable aspects imo. So I’ll start with the thing I was most irritated about: Piper.

Piper...Piper...Piper. Gods, none of her chapters ever passed the Bechdel test. I DESPISE her and I hated every single one of her chapters. With characters like Frank, I admitted that sometimes his chapters were a bit boring but I never hated the guy’s narration. Piper, however, is an insecure hypocrite. Let me show you.

So at one point, Annabeth, Piper, and Hazel meet up with Aphrodite. The POV is Annabeth’s and while Aphrodite is talking to them, it seems like Piper is just embarrassed to have her around. 

“Mother!” Piper said. “You’re embarrassing me.” “Well, I don’t see why,” the goddess said. “Just because you don’t appreciate my fashion tips, Piper, doesn’t mean the others won’t. I could do a quick makeover for Annabeth and Hazel, perhaps silk ball gowns like mine—” “Mother!” 

And a few lines later she says again “ ‘Mother, Piper said, “is there a reason you’re here?’” (30). 

Okay so someone tell me why this girl says 10 pages later “But also, Piper was secretly hurt not to have her mother to herself. Aphrodite had barely looked at her. She hadn’t said a word about Jason. She hadn’t bothered explaining her conversation with Reyna at all. It was almost as if Aphrodite no longer found Piper interesting. Piper had gotten her guy. Now it was up to her to make things work, and Aphrodite had moved on to newer gossip as easily as she might toss out an old copy of a tabloid magazine” (40). LIKE GIRL MAKE UP YOUR MIND. Do you want your mom’s attention or not? But I’m highkey interested in what Aphrodite said to Reyna tho.

Let’s talk about Reyna for a second. First off, I feel so bad for her?? Percy turned her down-fine, he has a gf. Then I thought Jason had feelings for her but he says this in MoA, page 19: “It’s just…I never felt that way toward Reyna,” Jason said, “so I didn’t think about its making you uncomfortable. You’ve got nothing to worry about, Pipes”. Like damn can Reyna get any love?? I get that he doesn’t like her anymore since he met Piper but to have never liked her? That’s rough. And notice how this quote is from page 19, but again on p. 40, Piper is still so insecure in their relationship. I don’t she’s listened to a word he said at all. Then towards the end of the book, she says oh I love you but she literally didn’t know the man’s age prior to that. Like what?? Did they even kiss this book? I think like once lmao. Also speaking of the birthday thing, Piper says this while she waits for Jason to blow out his birthday candles.

“Well?” she urged. “Blow out the candles.”

Jason did. Piper wondered if he’d made a wish—hopefully that he and Piper would survive this quest and stay together forever. She decided not to ask him. She didn’t want to jinx that wish, and she definitely didn’t want to find out that he’d wished for something different. 

Me @ Jason: This your girl? Come get her. Because Imma hurt her feelings. What do you mean you want him to wish to stay together forever? He should wish for Gaea to you know die so everyone can be safe. If I ever met Piper in person, I’d fight her. ON SIGHT. 

In a related note, I’ve got nothing to say about Jason. He was fine. He passed out alot during this book, didn’t do much for how hyped his powers are supposed to be. I will say when he and Percy were possessed and they fought each other, Percy totally won that fight. He knocked Jason the hell out and was about to end his whole career until Piper got Blackjack to knock him out. But overall, I think Jason’s rather bland and him and Piper have NO chemistry. But I don’t think he deserves insecure Piper as a girlfriend. She’s a whole ass child of Aphrodite and she’s worried about her relationship...let me move on.

My main issue with the book lies in the structure and plot. The previous two books had 3 narrators and each set of trio had a specific prophecy assigned to them-i.e: Percy, Hazel and Frank had to free death, retrieve the eagle. The prophecies are a catalyst to get them to go on the quest. And then obviously, we have the overarching prophecy of the seven that will come to fruition in small chunks until the last book of the series. That’s fine. So the issue with MoA is that now Rick is handling seven characters + Coach Hedge (like why was he necessary??). He has 4 POVs which threw me the hell off bc we had 3 in the previous two books and honestly, I think we could’ve gone without one of them (Percy’s actually). As a writer, it’s hard to balance multiple characters in the same setting constantly. If they have a conversation, one or two of them will have less lines because other characters have already said them. Therefore to give everyone adequate ‘screen time’, Rick had to separate them by keeping groups of three or two on their own side quest. As a result, however, reading the book felt like I was being brake checked constantly. Ex-We follow Percy, Frank, and Hedge to an Aquarium then we follow Annabeth, Hazel, and Piper to meet Aphrodite, then they encounter the Romans, then Piper and Jason meet Hercules and get the horn and so on. Like they’re constantly shifting and doing stuff but not going as a group so it feels like I’m constantly trying to catch up. There’s too many pit stops for my liking. And I deadass have no idea what most of it had to with the MoA prophecy. 

This disjointed-ness is what makes me rate it lower than tLH. Because while I didn’t like Piper or Jason in that book, it was still cohesive. There was a plot and it was followed. Another reason I might feel this way toward MoA is because Rick has a formula and it’s starting to be predictable. Think about the original Greek myths-there’s one main demigod like Hercules, there’s a quest, there’s godly interference so it makes sense the the PJO/HoO characters have the same thing. But all this talking to gods (esp gods we’ve already met like Aphrodite) is taking up so much space and slowing the plot. It also didn’t help that the minor villians in this book are all unlikeable?? All they did was talk. Otis and Ephialtes. Porchy and Keto. Arachane. All they did was talk. Here’s how to defeat a PJO/HoO villain: con them to help you/let you go or fight them. That’s it. 

This book is where I started to really regret reading the series. Like I was just over it. The plot was somehow slow and all over the place at the same time. The last couple of chapters were good because I was like finally, something relevant to the prophecy is happening. 

Let me leave you guys with some positives about this book though:

1. Annabeth’s POV. What a gal. When she faces Arachane, Annabeth mentions that she doesn’t have an active power like the other Seven but she has her intelligence. And I’m like yes girl, you are brave and everything I want to be. I would read the PJO series from her POV over this series.

2. Percabeth. They kept promising to come back to each other and my heart melted. Percy was so worried about letting her go follow the Mark but he knew it’s what she had to do and he let her go. And ugh, them falling got me all over again. And like just their chemistry is off the charts. Piper and Jason could never. 

3.  Percy’s comments about Luke. Percy realizes that he’s around Luke’s age when Luke went all ‘Gods are bad, their children are pawns’ and like I get chills from reading that passage because you can tell Percy’s tired. He can’t have a life because of these quests, he’s constantly moments away from dying. He never really got a chance to be a teenager. And I get he wants to help people and keep the world from being taken over by bad guys but he’s also human. He’s seen demigods die...he’s traumatized. Like Percy, I really understand Luke better now (right idea, wrong execution) and l see how tired Percy is. 

4. The Leo/Hazel/Frank disaster of a love triangle. Like I’ve mentioned before, I want Hazel, a THIRTEEN YEAR OLD child, to be left the hell alone when it comes to romance. But because Uncle Rick insists on pairing up everyone, I have to oblige. So here I am. The amount of times I cackled at Frank and Leo’s digs at each other is astronomical. Like shots were fired, no one held back. I was like is this even MG/lower end of YA anymore with all this salt?? Over the years I’ve been spoiled about the series so I know that Leo somehow ends up with Calypso so I know nothing will come out of the love triangle (and it seems to be wrapping up bc Leo and Frank complimented each other’s abilities toward the end there) but passive aggressive-ness was peak. 

5. Every single conversation between Reyna and Annabeth. Like two powerhouses talking about wanting to save their camps and the world. I loved it. Hands down. I hope they can be friends when this is all over. 

6. And lastly, the reunion of Percabeth. The Judo flip. The fact that Percy talked about having a future with her.

Some Israeli!Percy Headcannons

Percy has a rough time celebrating Chanukah because that’s the Jewish #greekssuck holiday and he feels conflicted. By the time he’s older, though, he’s celebrating it with no regrets, because he’s mature enough to realize that he doesn’t have to love everything about Greek culture and history to be a proud Greek demigod.

In a similar vein, he has some issues with Camp Jupiter, especially when the camp leadership talks about the great battle tactics used in 70 CE and during the Bar Kokhba revolt. Like, he’s not here for that.

His Bar Mitzvah had only one (1) monster in attendance, and it was Tyson. Side note: Tyson got a little excited when he was lifting Percy up on the chair and our poor boy still has a knot on his skull.

Annabeth learned Hebrew so that she, Sally, and Percy could talk shit about people behind their backs.

Percy and Sally go fucking out on Yom Ha’atzmaut because BLUE

For his birthday one year, Leo makes Percy a kippah that can turn into a Magen David.

Percy is OBSESSED with preserving Lake Kineret and takes Grover with him on ecological programs to Israel.

Percy curses out monsters like an Israeli and everyone is proud.

Percy and Annabeth get married under a chupah Athena wove as a peace offering, and when Annabeth walks around Percy 7 times and vice versa, they both cry because this is their something permanent.

Annabeth decides to convert about a year after they get engaged because she’s never felt more loved than when she met Sally’s relatives from Tel Aviv, and she loves the tradition of questioning that the Talmud perpetuates. Also— god wrestling has always been Annabeth’s fav past time.

Sometimes Percy struggles with his belief in one God and his parentage, but after talking it over with Samirah, he makes his peace with it.

Percy loves Bamba more than most people and soon has every camper hooked.

When Percy’s an adult, he gets a timeshare in Eilat so he can go surfing twice a year.

Percy’s Blundstones are somehow still in perfect working order after two fucking wars and he is not surprised in the least. He buys a pair for Annabeth one year and she has never been more in love with him because damn these boots are everything. He still prefers his Naot though.

Percy’s favorite Israeli slang word is סבבה. He calls Annabeth his נשמה or חיים שלי and she blushes so hard.

Also— he uses Hebrew in the bedroom. It’s a fact. Annabeth loves it.

Percy struggles a lot with the whole “respect your father” thing because? Poseidon? is? problematic?

He cries at his son’s Brit Milah and at his daughter’s naming ceremony.

He says the Mourner’s Kaddish for every single demigod who dies and sits shiva after every battle. He also has trees planted in their names.

Percy and Magnus bond over their mutual adoration of falafel and tahini.

Percy takes those awful mud glamor shots every time he visits the Dead Sea like the worst sort of tourist. Annabeth won’t be seen with him.

On a side note, Annabeth is definitely one of those people who reads while floating in the Dead Sea.

Piper finds out that Percy has vegetables for breakfast and doesn’t talk to him for a week and a half.

Whenever Percy is feeling fed up with being a demigod, he remembers that he is part of another thousands-year-old community that loves and accepts him, and will never abandon him, wherever he is.

A Definitely Incomplete List Of My Favorite Moments From The Lightning Thief (book), because I'm having Feelings

Percy very causally mentioning times he accidentally hit a school bus with a canon or dropped fifth graders into shark-infested water

Grover Underwood

Just everything he’s ever done

Percy running an illegal candy ring out of his dorm room 

“I was worried they found out I got my essay on Tom Sawyer from the internet and were going to take away my grade. Or worse, they were going to make me read the book.”

When Percy thought Grover was going to give him some deep, meaningful commentary on life to make him feel better but Grover just wanted Percy’s lunch

Percy tried so hard to do well on his Latin final and Chiron somehow thinks it’s a good idea to tell him he’s ‘not normal’ in front of the class my poor boy

That one part where Percy essentially went “Oh hey mom’s home!!! Better reschedule this panic attack I was having!!” 

When Percy did that weird hand sign (that was never explained) and the door slammed on Gabe so hard he flew up the steps

The fact that when Grover finally tracked Percy down he wasn’t wearing any pants. Like, there was literally no reason for him to not have the fake feet and the jeans on. No actual reason for him to be free balling it. Percy just needed a shock apparently. Showing up in the middle of a hurricane with no pants, dramatic ass satyr I love him. 

The SATISFYING DEATH of Gabe’s Camaro + Sally apparently learned bullfighting just in case because she truly is the best mom

Percy dragging Grover over the camp line while crying for his mom literally end me

Not so fun: Percy, upon meeting Mr. D, immediately recognizing the signs of an alcoholic and going out of his way to sit far away from him ‘just in case’

The fact that everyone just expected him to hear ‘the greek gods are real’ and move on?? why would no one let this boy be in shock omg

Zeus apparently had a thing for the fluffy 80′s hairstyles

“the real world is where the monsters are” 

The fact that Poseidon could have claimed Percy at literally any moment but he apparently decided he really needed that dramatic reveal during capture the flag.

When Zeus was feeling Extra Dramatic(tm) after Percy’s claiming so he started making it rain inside the camp boarders and everyone was lowkey freaking out

When Annabeth pulls off her invisible cap and declares she’s going on the quest with him and Percy was like, beyond unsurprised that she was there and didn’t even attempt to fight her 

Chiron forgot to give Percy a sword from his father for like, an entire month. 

Grover with those freaking flying shoes oh my God

Annabeth blushing literally any time Luke talks to her 

IN THIS HOUSE WE LOVE AND RESPECT ARGUS, HEAD OF CAMP SECURITY

lmao when Percy and Annabeth start bickering about something and Argus just winks at Percy because he knows

When they were playing hackey sack with an apple but it got too close to Grover’s mouth and he just ate the whole thing

The entire bus scene oh my God

Annabeth on a fury’s back 

the explosion. just. all gr8. 

When Grover tries to play a path finder song and Percy just immediately slams into a tree. Also the fact that the path finder song was actually just a Hillary Duff number. 

“You two are giving me a migraine, and satyr's don’t even get migraines!” 

Percy actually, truly trying to sell the story that the three of them are circus orphans who got separated from their ringleader 

Grover: hey guys this place is REALLY SHADY and we need to leave

Annabeth and Percy: but f o o d

Can you imagine walking into a store and finding your dead uncle’s body on display? Like????

When Medusa revealed herself and Annabeth’s running around invisible, Percy’s swinging a sword blindly and Grover’s flying around screaming and trying to whack her with a stick: everyone here is a MESS

When Annabeth was overly annoyed with Percy after that ordeal??? Sweetheart you fell for the trick too

Name something more iconic than 12 year old Percy Jackson mailing the decapitated head of Medusa to the gods on Mt. Olympus in an act of sheer pettiness. I dare you.

ive always deeply loved aa’s soundtrack.. in some games some songs shined more than others.. for example imo first game had the best trial ost while JFA shined with reminiscences. even if some songs werent that great, aa def has much more more memorable and good soundtracks and they fit characters and atmosphere so well aaaaaaaaaaaa when will wandering heart stop making me feel emo every damn time i hear it also i really love orchestra and jazz versions.. theyre so great

Has a rough time celebrating Chanukah because that’s the Jewish #greekssuck holiday and he feels conflicted. By the time he’s older, though, he’s celebrating it with no regrets, because he’s mature enough to realize that he doesn’t have to love everything about Greek culture to be a proud Greek demigod.
