My wifi died when I first saw this so I never got the full experience and it ended with Casey holding the book up to Raph. Thus, I didn't really think much of it, just some cute moments with Raph and baby Casey.

okokokokokokokokok lemme explain why I'm focusing on that and not the GIANT elephant in the literal room rn. Basically, I'm fuccin emotionless, I feel nothing, and I'm an alien. Thus, I tend to gravitate towards the emotions of living characters rather than dead fricking bodies.

Which is why I wanna talk about Casey. This lovable little squirt as a child has seen nothing like this before. He's witnessed people being mean, sure, has seen things break, yeah, has seen people break down and cry... Okay probably not that one BUT STILL! Casey's an apocalypse baby. He's seen a lot in the short time that he's been alive. However, one thing he has yet to witness, is death itself.

Well not actually Death Itself like in Puss in Boots or that one indie animated pilot that never saw the light of day again-

This was the first time ever that Casey has ever seen someone die, or on the brink of death. This, to me, is a reflection on the parentage of the others. If a child has witnessed more than necessary at a young age, then the parents are shit and should go to jail. If they don't have trauma yet, then the parents are doing their jobs right and they can rightfully plead the fifth in court. For Casey, it's the latter. His parents, aka the turtles, (And specifically Raph) have been doing a great job with taking care of Casey!

This also means though that he doesn't quite understand yet that Raph is, for the moment, gone for good. He's not gonna understand why Mikey will go on to avoid him as time goes on. He's not gonna grasp why Leo holds him so close to his chest every night. He's not gonna wonder why UncleTello hasn't been seen outside his lab in days. Only after noticing these things will he be able to understand what happened to his mother and father, and only then will he truly know what it's like to lose someone.

This is represented via his shadow, actually. Well, sort of. Usually, when a shadow is shown casting unto or from a character, it's to represent unsureness, confusion, a loss of identity, darkness... All that bad shit. For this case, however, I see it differently.

Well kind of. This is really really hard to explain so just- bare with me here please and thank you-

The older Casey, the 13-year-old (I forget how old he is actually so I'm just going off of my own headcanon. Sorry) that we see with a grief-stricken face and a haunted look that has seen far too much by now, is casting no shadow. The younger version of himself, the 3-year-old, the one who is only witnessing death for the first time in his life, is casting a shadow.

In this case, I believe the shadow represents pureness and kindness. Sure, Casey's got a butt-ton of kindness in his heart still, and he's so full of it that I bet he's overflowing with it, but it's much more worn-down and deflated than how it used to be. The smaller, younger Junior is filled with far more love and innocence and kindness. Far too much for his teeny-tiny toddler body to allow. Because, ya know, that's just how kids are. They have those like 2-year intervals where they're little shits for a while, you start questioning their sanity, and then BOOM! Nicest human being you've ever seen!

So basically here, Junior is overflowing with kindness. That- That's what the shadow is. His innocence.

Tips for writing those gala scenes, from someone who goes to them occasionally:

Generally you unbutton and re-button a suit coat when you sit down and stand up.

You’re supposed to hold wine or champagne glasses by the stem to avoid warming up the liquid inside. A character out of their depth might hold the glass around the sides instead.

When rich/important people forget your name and they’re drunk, they usually just tell you that they don’t remember or completely skip over any opportunity to use your name so they don’t look silly.

A good way to indicate you don’t want to shake someone’s hand at an event is to hold a drink in your right hand (and if you’re a woman, a purse in the other so you definitely can’t shift the glass to another hand and then shake)

Americans who still kiss cheeks as a welcome generally don’t press lips to cheeks, it’s more of a touch of cheek to cheek or even a hover (these days, mostly to avoid smudging a woman’s makeup)

The distinctions between dress codes (black tie, cocktail, etc) are very intricate but obvious to those who know how to look. If you wear a short skirt to a black tie event for example, people would clock that instantly even if the dress itself was very formal. Same thing goes for certain articles of men’s clothing.

Open bars / cash bars at events usually carry limited options. They’re meant to serve lots of people very quickly, so nobody is getting a cosmo or a Manhattan etc.

it's extremely critical that you see the photo of the perp walk for luigi mangione as being propaganda. i've seen so many people wave it off and instead fawn over his looks. and trust me, i know it ended up being kind of pathetic and weird - but please don't brush it off as a "modelling opportunity" for him. it's a fucking terrifying message the police are sending.

i want to make a few comparisons here, in case you're not from the US or familiar with why the perp walk thing is something to pay attention to. just to set the groundwork for why this is a purposeful, unusual, and cruel act by the nyc police - for why this is not a common occurrence and for why that matters.

the prosecution alleges the show of force is due to the charge of "terrorism." for comparison, in june 2015, tsarnaev was found guilty for the boston marathon bombing, which killed 3 people and injured hundreds. his actions are considered to be an act of domestic terrorism. i have spent the last hour looking through google for pictures of similar to mangione's perp walk - and so far, i have found zero. i also just do not personally remember a moment like that, despite living in boston at the time.

they allege that luigi is a stone-cold killer who carried out a longterm plan, making him particularly dangerous. again for comparison: in nyc, recently cory martin was found guilty of the killing of brandy odom. the murder was planned and premeditated to steal insurance money. and yet no staged perp walk. why didn't her life matter enough for a "show of force"?

but mangione gets paraded by a veritable army of police officers as if he is a rabid animal. for a single citizen who allegedly killed one other single citizen, the "largest perp walk ever" occurs.

so what is the "strong message" that the mayor and the police were trying to send here? the mayor speaks as if mangione is already convicted of terrorism. there is a very thin number of people who feel threatened by the CEO's death. none of us felt like mangione needs to be under massive armed guard.

the message is that you shouldn't resist. they are trying to "make an example" of him - that if you behave badly and kill a single rich person, you'll be treated as if you killed hundreds of people. you will be treated worse than a man who was found guilty of terrorism. you will be considered guilty without trial. the message is that the rich are a protected class, and you cannot touch them without massive punishment. they are trying to prevent a revolution by showing dominance and force against you.

the message is that the police are a puppet of the wealthy and that the law is not equally applied across class disparity. it is "some are more equal than others." it is "one life is more precious than another."

the show of force wasn't for luigi. it was for us. it was a warning. they are trying to remind us who is really in control.

WIBTA for taking advantage of my boss’ possible manic episode?

I know this already sounds bad but hear me out.

So I (30M) am the sole employee of this guy (62M) who’s honestly just a miserable boss and an even more miserable person. It sucks so bad working for him—the pay is horrendous, he’s verbally abusive, and the working conditions are awful (in the winter I literally have to stay bundled up the whole work day because he refuses to put the heat on in the office). He wouldn’t even give me holidays off if it wasn’t for the fact that there’s basically nothing to do those days because everywhere else is closed. I’m almost positive he unironically thinks poor people should die if they can’t work. His nephew (aka his only living relative and just the nicest guy) came by yesterday to invite him to Christmas dinner and he told him he’d see him in hell.

I cannot stress this enough—it’s BAD. I’d quit, but it’s been hard finding a better job and I’ve got four kids at home, including one with special needs.

Anyway, so here’s where I’m wondering if I’d be the asshole. Today was Christmas Day and he showed up at my house out of nowhere (huge red flag, I know). At first I thought he’d forgotten I had the day off and he was here to chew me out, which was worrying enough, but then his whole demeanor changed and he was super happy and excited and talking about how he was going to raise my salary. He even mentioned possibly making me a partner in the firm.

Now if that was it, I’d feel a little weird about the suddenness of it but it’d be fine. I’m not going to complain about having more money to feed my family. But then he started talking about how he wanted to pay our mortgage off. He talked about wanting to pay for our son to get the very expensive medical care that’s probably going to save his life. He mentioned at one point that he was going to be donating a huge amount of money to charity too—I knew he was rich but it staggered me. All this from a guy who doesn’t (didn’t?) even want to turn on the heat or the lights because it costs too much money.

It was such a sudden and drastic change that happened very literally overnight and now I’m kind of concerned he’s having a manic episode or something. I really, really want to accept his sudden generosity (I probably will; my wife is all for it and thinks he owes it to us), and I would love to believe that he’s truly had a sudden change of heart (an actual Christmas miracle lol) but I’m just worried about the possible consequences of accepting huge financial gifts like this from someone who I believe might be experiencing some kind of break from reality. Even if there’s nothing legally wrong with it, I’m worried about the ethics of it.

TLDR, my asshole boss might be in the middle of a mental breakdown. WIBTA if I accepted his offer to pay off my mortgage and my son’s medical expenses?
