I’m back on my demi/ace Arthur shit so here’s some things that have been floating around in my head for a few days

Arthur only ever wore shirts to bed while he was under love spells and after he got married.

He’s a hopeless romantic but actively avoids anyone who’s interested in him because, y’know, expectations suck.

He walked around shirtless or pantsless or completely naked while bathing or just while he was in his chambers multiple times when it was only him and Merlin, or whenever there was no expectation for it to mean anything else.

He only started liking Gwen when he got to know her more and when she started acting like a person more than a servant around him. The Ealdor episode springs to mind, then that episode where he faked his identity in a tournament. I’m sure there’s others, but I can’t remember them right now.

Anytime he acts sexually, flirting or anything along those lines, with anyone he’s not familiar with it’s always performative. When he met Merlin the whole time he was watched by the never seen again noble sons he was hanging out with. (I’ll speculate who they were again another day, that’s not the point)

He’s got no issues with proximity, clearly with how he acts around the knights with their affection, but as soon as the context changes he gets flustered and awkward.

Anyway. Do whatever you want with that information.

Arthur has always been one to measure distances. Doing so helps him categorize the mettle of connection between himself and the person, the thing, the kingdom. Knowing the distance from the tip of another’s sword to himself keeps him alive. Knowing the distance between Camelot and a neighboring kingdom shows him his allies. The distance between a knight and himself in the journey. The distance between him and his knights on the training field. The distance between his father and himself–now this gap that can never be crossed but in death. The distance between him and his servants, him and Morgana, him and Merlin. Knowing the distance helps plan for the next move, helps him protect his heart.

The distance from Camelot to the Eastern Sea has always seemed so unfathomable a distance. Spices and supplies from there take months to make it to Camelot. Arthur always compared that distance to the distance between him and his father in their later years. Working so closely together, seeing each other every day, and yet their ideas for Camelot are so vastly different. Arthur always thought that distance would be the greatest one he’d ever measure. Now, looking down at the sleeping figures of Merlin and his knights, he knows there’s something more. The distance from a king to others.

Arthur had already planned to move quietly through the room to grab his sword, knowing from overheard conversations the night before that the knights were planning a night of drinking and carousing and would likely crash in the weapons room with all their gear rather than making it up the steps to their respective chambers. But now Arthur moves silently. He will not wake them and have them see the tears in his eyes that he can’t quite make go away.

He won’t have them question him over tears brought on by something as ridiculous as a Council meeting that no one else took issue with. Not even Merlin, who sat beside him, offered an opinion when the council asked if two years were enough time to find a queen.

It’s not like Arthur didn't know this day was coming. His father reminded him often on those days where someone thought to question why the Prince didn’t have any princesses interested in him. His father would tell him to enter negotiations, and he would but nothing ever came of the matches. Uther thought he was being willful and stubborn. Arthur didn’t know how to word his fears. As king, he still doesn’t.

As royalty, intimacy with others is a tricky thing. For one, there’s always the matter of trust. Arthur learned quickly that trust must be earned and can be just as easily taken away. His father is the prime example of that, Morgana too. Then, there’s the matter of his position. His elevated status means that he has to maintain a level of distance between himself and others. It’s never been an all-encompassing issue until now. Or maybe it’s always been there in the back of his mind, but now it’s joined with the knowledge that he’s fairly sure he’s done taking lovers.

Reasoning: I headcannoned him as such before I even knew asexuality was a thing. Like using his canon relationship with Gwen as my example here. Throughout the early seasons, he shows no interest in her whatsoever. He doesn’t know her, she’s just Morgana’s maid. But as Merlin becomes friends with her, and Arthur in turn also gets to know her and become friends with her, he starts to fall in love her. Only after he builds a bond and connection with her does he start to feel that way. If we go the fanon route with Merlin I think it’s the same. Only after they become friends and build that connection would he have feelings, it would just be quicker because their friendship starts like right away lol As for Asexual, you’re telling me he was married to Gwen for YEARS and they don’t have a kid? In a time without protection? Ok I see so they just didn’t have sex. Like yeah it’s possible either of them was infertile but it was never said or anything so I choose my explanation

My King

Merlin has been in love in his life, those young and innocent loves, those sincere and pure loves, those loves of youth that make your heart beat faster and feel butterflies in your stomach. Merlin also had his first sexual experiences, and if he has to be honest, it's not something he cares to repeat. But apparently, sex is something inseparable when you are in love, when you want to show someone that you love them with all your being, sex (or lovemaking, as many call it) is something you do. Merlin doesn't like that so much. He likes to kiss, he likes to hold hands, he likes to snuggle up on cold winter nights when the snow prevents the front door from opening as high as it is, and he likes to spend time with the person he loves. Unfortunately, the people who love him do not understand this repulsion towards sex, and Merlin has begun to feel strange, inadequate, and heartbroken far more often than he cares to admit. Merlin has decided to give up on love because apparently he cannot be loved except in a way he does not like. But then Arthur arrived. Or rather, Merlin went to Arthur when he moved to Camelot, but these are trifles. Merlin loves Arthur as he has never loved anyone in his entire life. He loves him with his whole being, he loves him with a ferocity and possessiveness that is not clear even to him, he loves him to such an extent that he would give his own life for his without batting an eyelid, he loves and desires him. But, as with all the others before Arthur, he does not desire him carnally. Merlin does not understand and wants to stay away from that thought as much as possible but Arthur, being Arthur, does what Merlin does not expect and declares his love for him. And how could Merlin ever say no to him? How could he ever say no to what his heart desires more than anything else in the world? And Merlin makes love to Arthur and can feel all the feelings his king has for him, can feel how much Arthur wants him, and how much Arthur loves him. This makes him feel even more guilty because, although he is much better with Arthur, Merlin still has no sexual desire whatsoever. And Arthur may be a bit dumb, he may not understand problems immediately, but he understands immediately when something is wrong with the people he loves. Merlin knows that Arthur will leave him. And not because Arthur does not love him, but because there is something deeply wrong with Merlin and everyone leaves him behind at some point. But Merlin should have known that his king was different. "I love you, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with you." Then they cuddle, hold hands, and kiss before falling asleep in each other's arms. But Merlin is frightened because Arthur is giving up a part of himself for him, because it is obvious that Arthur likes making love and Merlin does not want Arthur to give up anything for him. Arthur laughs. "I'm happier now with you than I've ever been in my whole life, Merlin, and maybe there's something wrong with you after all if you haven't realized that." So they cuddle, hold hands, and kiss before falling asleep in each other's arms.

Curiosities about Arthur and Merlin's eldest son:

Godric is the eldest child.

Despite being the eldest, Arthur does not expect his son to be the next king, knowing it would be too much pressure for such a young boy.

Godric loves to sing. When Rowena goes out to drink in the taverns, Godric always accompanies his sister to sing with the drunken knights.

Godric has the same stubbornness and courage as Arthur, and the generosity and loyalty of Merlin.

Gwen is his favorite person. Godric admires Gwen's courage and kindness and is greatly inspired by her.

Godric's armor is forged from Arthur's old armor.

The Sword of Gryffindor is Excalibur, which Arthur gave to his son after retiring and passing the throne to his children.

Godric and Basil have a rivalry. Godric is jealous of the time Salazar spends with the basilisk, and Basil dislikes Godric because Salazar leaves him with Godric when he needs someone to look after him.

Godric is very affectionate and friendly, so despite his almost identical appearance to his father, everyone who knows him tends to compare him to Merlin.

Godric is dyslexic, which often becomes a problem in battles because he has difficulty with directions. When someone shouts "Right!" or "Left!" Godric often turns the wrong way.

He is also colorblind, which leads to amusing situations when he dresses for a ball where he should wear red but ends up in pink or orange.

Godric has trouble reading but loves when his mother or siblings read to him.

Dancing is his favorite thing after fighting.

Like his mother, Godric is very clumsy, which is why he has many scars and wounds on his body.

Since he is always getting hurt, Godric started training with Gaius to learn healing spells.

Godric has a habit of collecting pieces of armor from fallen knights in battle. It may be morbid, but Godric finds it honorable.

Merlin and Godric love spending nights talking about spells or simply gossiping about the knights.

Hogwarts was founded after Arthur's death when the siblings were 30 and their father was already old at 60 years.

Godric was the one who had the idea to found Hogwarts because he missed home but didn't have the courage to return without his parents being alive. The crown was passed to Merlin, but after his "death," Camelot weakened without its kings, leading to the kingdom's fall.

Godric was the second sibling to die.

He and Rowena wrote the Hogwarts anthem.

BBC Merlin

Arthur Pendragon is, in my head, demiromantic and bisexual... It sort of depends on the circumstances/episode. Arthur needs a very long time to really feel connections with people and only starts to consider love after he really gets to know them, hence his constant search for true love in the show. With Merlin I'm not entirely sure if he was attracted to him instantly, strangely enough feeling a connection from the moment they met, or if it takes him till the end of the series when Merlin confesses his magic and finally shows his true self to realise the depth of his feelings.

Merlin is, well... Bi Bi Bi. A disaster bi in fact. With a preference for sweaty men in metal boxes, he's not very peculiar. However, Merlin is a one person hyperfixation kind of guy. Most people are convinced that Merlin's gay.

Gwen: I feel like most people in BBC Merlin are bi and Gwen is no exception. Like Merlin, she prefers the hero type in metal uniforms. But she also had a thing for Morgana in the beginning.

Morgana: lesbian. I have never seen a woman so disinterested in men, I'm not surprised that they casted Katie McGrath in supergirl as supergirls love interest. I might settle for homoromantic and asexual. But definitly in love with Gwen in the very beginning.

Sir Leon, my beloved, the immortal, the one and only, the eternal suffering aro/ace. I don't have to explain this one. The only counter moment is the Lamia episode where Leon suddenly develops interest in women out of nowhere. My personal take is that anyone could be fallen under a Lamia's spell, this one just had a taste for men (and male presenting).

Sir Elian: once upon a time I clocked them as nonbinary and sadly that's as far as I thought into this character. Pretty sure he's aromantic. He/they pronouns. I dunno, I don't think Elian would conform to anything if given a choice. Aromantic too, I think. Like Leon, there is no interest there, but he does play around with Percival and Gwaine quite often, so I'd take that as allosexual.

I am excluding Gwaine because I think canon Gwaine is written as a straight oblivious fuckboy. Albeit a kind one XD fanon Gwaine is often poly/ pan... Or into apples. Lmao XD and I'm not sure about Percival because the man has a dead wife and kids.

Voltron

Keith: with his lack of interest in women, he can only be gay. That man looks at no one quite the same as he looks at Lance. what the hell was the whole bonding thing if not a hint for post canon klance? Sorry, not sorry XD rivals to best friends to lovers.

Shiro: probably the only character in my entire history of shipping that I would unqueer without feeling bad about it. I know he's gay, I just don't really see it in the writing. Of course there aren't always clear signs that someone is gay which is why this is good rep actually (+he's married), but you asked me for proof in the show and all I see is that this man is a dad. That's his gender and his orientation and that's all I really need to know.
