Korra, playing go fish with Bolin in a jail cell: so who do we call?
Bolin: normally I would suggest Mako or Asami, but honestly? I’d feel safer in jail
Korra: Agreed. Got any threes?
Bolin, shaking his head: no luck, Avatar. Go fish
Korra, pouting: seriously? First I’m arrested, now I can’t get a damn three. It’s so not my day

Why do you think that Asami has no friends at the beginning? With Korra it’s because she grew up in isolation and with Mako and Bolin it’s because they were homeless- but why doesn’t Asami have any friends? A girl like her should’ve had a million friends
First of all, bless you, anon. I'd literally opened up a window to talk to some friends about how alone in fandom I feel these days because so many people have moved on or stopped creating and interacting. Then I saw this message! Don't underestimate how motivating it is to get asks about characters and headcanons, or even just to know someone else is interested in your thoughts and wants to talk about mutual interests. You really brightened my day. I hope I can do the same.
As for Asami, I have three theories. The most likely and most boring of these is that it's simply convenience on the part of the writers. In book 1 we didn't see much of her personal life outside of interacting with the Krew so there was no need to waste precious screen time on Asami's other friends. After the show got renewed the writers had to scramble for reasons Asami would still be around - because let's face it, who winds up hanging out with your ex and the girl he left you for as your main friend group? IMO there's zero reason for Asami to be in the show after the first season if she has other friends and sources of support.
A more interesting proposition and the one I mostly go with in my own fics is that Asami did have other friends initially, but that they all abandoned her after her father's arrest. She'd have gone to a fancy private school full of other rich kids with other rich and important parents who'd know that a connection to the daughter of a convicted felon was now social suicide. Suddenly nobody returns her calls, everyone is busy, that invite to Su Li Lim's party happens to go astray, etc. With so many social doors now shut to her, hanging out with the former Fire Ferrets makes more sense. She might even do it initially out of spite in a "well FINE, I'm gonna go be important to the Avatar and go fight crime and be awesome" kind of way.
My last theory is that Hiroshi Sato didn't really let Asami have friends. Acquaintances, sure, but he wouldn't want her growing too close to any dangerous benders and there wasn't an easy way to do this without it being obvious that's what he's doing so he didn't let her grow close to anyone. I think of this as the Victorian novel scenario where Asami is disincentivized from doing kid stuff to "take care of father" and from an early age assumes some of the duties her mom had taken on in terms of household management. She's somehow always too busy for friends. When the class field trip comes around her dad needs her for something important. This might also explain how an 18-year-old thought they were qualified to be CEO of a huge company. She's already managing half the staff at the estate as well as the vendor contracts. How hard could it be?
But what do you think?

Korra: You really put aside everything and came all this way for me? How did you even get here so fast?
Asami: Several traffic violations.
Mako: Three counts of resisting arrest.
Bolin: Roughly thirteen cans of energy drinks.
Asami: Also, that’s not our car.

If worked for the team who made Avatar TloK. How would you rewrite TloK?
To be completely honest, rewriting tlok wouldn't fix all it's issues. Tlok just needed to have longer seasons, an actually established amount of seasons so they weren't pressured to make every single season a complete story for fear of not getting more time.
But let's say, hypothetically that I murdered mr Crabs or whoever is in charge of Nickelodeon and removed any studio meddling from the show.
My perfect world would include:
More filler episodes that focus on a singular character. Think Sokka's Master or the Painted Lady. The Krew are all fascinating characters with a lot of potential, however, due to the runtime of the show, their storylines are rushed... or completely nonexistent. Give me more details of Mako and Bolin's childhood. Show me emore of Asami struggling with her father's arrest.
I'd try to cut down on the westernisation of the show. I can see why these foreign aspects slipped in, since the closer the Avatarverse inches to our modern times, the more blurred the lines become. At least to my whiteass. I'd try to lean towards silkpunk, rather than the much more west based steampunk. It would be a fascinating endeavour to imagine what a world with mostly eastern influences would look like.
I'd make Vaatu the overarching villain/final boss of the story... it would require a bit of moving around of the timeline but I think I'd structure it as: Red Lotus> Kuvira> Amon> Vaatu. However I'd blur the timeline more. Make Amon a background threat in the eariler seasons, only for him to rise in popularity and power after people see what benders like Kuvira are capable of, for example.
This would also allow for certain villains to become redeemed or at least helpful in some way, later on. Mayhaps Amon and Kuvira team with the Krew to defeat Vaatu in some way.
Also, instead of destroying Vaatu completely, I'm leaning towards Korra absorbing him, in a way. Yes Vaatu is a dark spirit, but 'darker' urges are necessary for humans' survival and happiness. Korra embodies the duality of man very well. I think it would be a fascinating idea to see the Avatar become the embodiment of both light and darkness.
In general, making Vaatu and Raava more morally ambiguous, rather than the simple good spirit/bad spirit thing they had in the og show would be a fascinating concept.
I'd do my best to pull away from the show's original centerist narrative. Have Korra learn from the villains and make active changes to the world, showing her growth as an Avatar and person. Perhaps she's reluctant to see the Red Lotus' point of view at the beginning of the show, but sympathises with Amon at the tail end of the story.
Make the entire Krew queer. And talk about queerness more, in general. Have the characters have open conversations about queerness in their respective enviornments and cultures. Tlok already has a very queer undertone to it, even before korrasami became canon, but touching on this subject more overtly would provide great opportunity for characterisation and worldbuilding.
Have the story span several years. Watch the Krew grow up. Tlok works very well as a coming of age story even in its original form. Have Vaatu and his darkness and chaos symbolise the uncharted waters of maturity at the end of teenagedom. This especially works if Korra merges or accepts him like i suggested.
There... that's some basics. I think that most of my criticisms of the show could mostly be solved if the studio wasn't being a bitch but well. We can't have nice things, can we?
I took a while to answer this ask because it was genuinely such an interesting, but overwhelming question.
Also now I have wayy too many ideas about a potential tlok rewrite, so feel free to ask me about that if you want to hear me ramble.

Inspired by this awesome post I decided to try my own version!
Excerpts from The White Lotus Avatar Guide Book (Unofficial)
Or updated protocol concerning Avatar Korra.
1. Get used to the nicknames.
1.1. Avatar Korra does occasionally give multiple nicknames to the same person.
1.2. If you value your life, DO NOT ever call Chief Lin Beifong “Chief Cranky Pants”.
1.3. Avatar Korra is the only one allowed to call General Kuvira “General Eyebrows.”
1.4. Detective Mako asks that you no longer call him “Sharkbrows” no matter how much Avatar Korra does it.
1.5. Please only address Avatar Korra as “Korra”, “Avatar”, or “Avatar Korra” instead of whatever nicknames she tries giving herself.
1.6. No, we cannot address Avatar Korra as “The Most Badass Avatar Who Ever Lived.” Avatar Kyoshi still holds that title.
2. Please try to limit Naga’s treats to only per person.
2.1. Do not try to take away any of Naga’s toys/bones.
2.2. If you have recommendations on how to remove polar-bear-dog hair from clothes please contact the Grand Lotus.
2.3. Naga is permitted at least one hour of play time every day.
3. If you cannot find Avatar Korra search all nearby rooftops. Seaside cliffs and mountains are a good choice as well.
3.1. Checking Avatar Aang Memorial Island is also recommended.
3.2. If she still isn’t found, try asking Master Katara.
3.3. On further consideration, do not ask Master Katara. She can and will mislead you for amusement.
3.4. So will Meelo, Ikki, Rohan, and Jinora.
3.5. Detective Mako and Asami Sato will as well. Bolin most likely doesn’t know where she is, but will insist he does.
3.6. Naga is the best choice. She can track.
3.7. If Naga cannot be found either, contact Chief Tonraq or Senna. Or Master Tenzin.
3.8. If she still cannot be found, contact General Kuvira.
4. DO NOT GIVE AVATAR KORRA CATCUS JUICE.
4.1. Please do not challenge Avatar Korra with dares. She will do them.
4.2. Please do not participate in any drinking games with Avatar Korra. She will win.
4.3. DO NOT GIVE AVATAR KORRA CATCUS JUICE.
4.4. If Avatar Korra goes out in public while drunk, please contact her publicist. Master Tenzin has the number.
4.5. Drunk Avatar Korra can be persuaded to come home by mentioning Naga, or food.
4.6. If that fails call General Kuvira.
4.7. DO NOT GIVE AVATAR KORRA CATCUS JUICE.
4.8. On the rare chance that Avatar Korra gets her hands on cactus juice, please notify the local authorities. As well as General Kuvira, and the Avatar’s publicist.
4.9. After the last incident we’d like to remind everyone NOT to encourage drunk Avatar Korra to go streaking.
5. Under NO circumstances is Avatar Korra allowed to drive any vehicle.
5.1. President Zhu Li banned Avatar Korra from ever getting a driver’s license. Do not believe her if she tries to convince you otherwise.
5.2. Chief Lin Beifong herself promised to arrest anyone who helps Avatar Korra drive.
5.3. After the incident in Ba Sing Se, King Wu has permanently banned Korra from ever having a driver’s license.
5.4. Do not believe Asami Sato when she says she has “special permission” to teach Avatar Korra how to drive.
6. Do not try to interrupt Avatar Korra and Chief Tonraq while they’re listening to Pro-bending on the radio.
6.1. Please don’t encourage Avatar Korra to gamble on Pro-bending matches.
6.2. Please don’t encourage Chief Tonraq to gamble on Pro-bending matches.
7. For the last time, we are not allowed in Avatar Korra’s family home.
7.1. Please do not try to interrupt Avatar Korra’s time with her parents. It will not end well.
7.2. For the love of Agni, DO NOT try to interrupt Avatar Korra’s alone time with General Kuvira.
8. No, Avatar Korra will never stop saying “I’m the Avatar and you have to deal with it.”
8.1. Avatar Korra is also very fond of terrible puns and “dad” jokes.
8.2. Please do not tell Avatar Korra sex jokes. She’ll never stop repeating them.
8.3. Also don’t ask for sex stories unless you’re prepared to hear them.
9. The Avatar Fund is NOT to be used for Avatar Korra’s personal investments.
9.1. After the Varriwash incident, we’d like to remind everyone to carefully screen Avatar Korra’s mail for scams.
10. Avatar Korra would appreciate it if you didn’t mention her PTSD publicly.
10.1. Talking about Avatar Korra to ANY newspaper, radio show, or magazine will result in immediate termination.

The top 8 episodes from each season will move on to the next round.
Vote on the first half of the season here!
Episode descriptions are under the cut.
The Aftermath
Tarrlok calls for Lin Beifong's resignation as chief of police, while Mako and Bolin move into the Sato mansion. While visiting them, Korra overhears implications that Hiroshi Sato is colluding with the Equalists and informs Chief Beifong and Tenzin, who find no evidence. An Equalist claiming to be disillusioned with the war reveals that Sato has a secret factory under his mansion, used to manufacture weapons for the Equalists. When Korra, Tenzin, and Beifong discover the secret factory, they are attacked by Equalists using large combat machines built by Sato, who reveals that the source was a trap. Beifong's metalbending officers are captured and taken to Amon, but Mako, Bolin, and Asami rescue Korra, Tenzin, and Beifong. Beifong decides to resign her post and rescue her officers, while Korra offers Mako, Bolin, and Asami sanctuary on Tenzin's Air Temple Island.
When Extremes Meet
At his inauguration as Beifong's replacement, Police Chief Saikhan vows to support Tarrlok's task force, leading Tenzin and Korra to quarrel with Tarrlok. Korra expresses frustration with her inability to airbend, and Tenzin tells her to obtain help from her past lives. Asami, Mako, Bolin, and Korra form a new "Team Avatar", patrolling the city and capturing Equalists, to Tarrlok's disapproval. Tarrlok places all non-benders under a curfew, and orders the arrest of a mob who refuses to disperse in obedience of the curfew. Korra tries to free the unarmed civilians, and Tarrlok arrests her friends to stop her. Later that night, she seeks Tarrlok out in private and he proposes to free her friends if she begins to fall in line with his wishes, but finding him to be corrupt, she angrily rebukes him and a bending battle ensues. Korra eventually gets the upper hand in the fight, only to have her fortunes reversed when Tarrlok reveals a dark secret: he is a bloodbender, able to manipulate human flesh through the water in the body. Tarrlok easily takes Korra captive using these skills and moves her to a cabin outside Republic City.
Out of the Past
Tarrlok locks Korra in a platinum box in the mountains, publicly claiming that Equalists abducted her. In response, Lin Beifong frees Korra's friends from prison and, with Tenzin's help, the five of them infiltrate the Equalist hideout, where Beifong frees her troops but an Equalist reveals that they had nothing to do with Korra's capture. Confronting Tarrlok in City Hall, a witness exposes Tarrlok's bloodbending powers, which Tarrlok uses to disable the group and escape. Meanwhile, Korra learns from Aang's past that 42 years prior, the mobster Yakone escaped trial by bloodbending the court, whereupon Aang removed his bending powers. Tarrlok confirms that he is Yakone's son, attempting to rule Republic City from a political seat rather than through crime. When Equalists track him back to Korra, his bloodbending proves ineffective against Amon, who takes away his bending. Korra escapes and reunites with Naga, who returns her to her friends.
Turning the Tides
After recovering from her abduction, Korra tells her story, and Tenzin asks Lin to protect his family while he attends the morning's council meeting. Tenzin is attacked at City Hall, and though he defeats his would-be abductors, he learns that the other council members have been captured by Equalists and that the city is under a full-scale attack by Equalists heavily armed with Sato's newest weaponry and military technology. Amon's airships bomb Republic City as Tenzin reaches police headquarters, where he wires the United Forces, the military of the United Republic, for help. Equalist 'mecha-tanks' capture Chief Saikhan and many officers. Korra and her friends rescue Tenzin. Tenzin's wife, Pemma gives birth to her fourth child, Rohan, as Equalist airships arrive at Air Temple Island. Lin Beifong, with the help of Tenzin's other three children, all airbenders, defeats the invaders. Korra goes into hiding and Tenzin flees with his family to preserve the last airbenders. Lin destroys an airship pursuing them, but is captured and refuses to reveal Korra's whereabouts, and is stripped of her bending. Korra's team enters the city sewers and General Iroh, the grandchild of former Firelord Zuko and commander of a fleet of United Forces warships, answers Republic City's plea.
Skeletons in the Closet
Korra and her friends hide in a camp underground until Iroh's fleet arrives; but the fleet is promptly disabled by Equalist mines, aircraft, and torpedoes. Korra saves Iroh from drowning, and they regroup with the others. Korra and Mako go in search of Amon, while Iroh, Bolin and Asami sabotage the Equalist airbase to prevent the sinking of a relief fleet under Commander Bumi, Tenzin's older brother. Korra and Mako discover Tarrlok captive in Air Temple Island, where he apologizes for his treatment of Korra and reveals that Amon is his brother, Noatak, who ran away due to Yakone's mistreatment of his children. Meanwhile, the assault on the Equalists' mountain airbase goes poorly when the attackers fall prey to an electric fence.
Endgame
Bolin, Asami, and Iroh are captured by Hiroshi Sato and the Equalists, but rescued by Naga. While Asami and Bolin fight Hiroshi and his mecha-tanks, Iroh destroys the Equalist bombers. Korra and Mako confront Amon at an Equalist rally, and expose him as a bender. Amon denies it and reveals that he has captured Tenzin and his young family. Korra and Mako free them, but Amon overpowers Mako and Korra, and removes Korra's bending abilities except for her airbending, which she later unlocks and uses against him. Expelled by her, Amon falls into the sea, and his escape unmasks him publicly as a waterbender. He flees Republic City, along with Tarrlok, who later explodes their boat and themselves. At the South Pole, Katara is unable to heal Korra's severance from water, earth, and fire. As Korra sits weeping at a cliff's edge, Aang's spirit fully restores her spiritual connection and bending abilities and Korra enters the Avatar State to restore Beifong's bending abilities. Everyone watches in awe and amazement with Tenzin addressing her as Avatar Korra.

Gale poorly explains legend of Korra
(I would normally have done this by season, so for the sake of sanity. Here is season 1)
Gale poorly explains: Legend of Korra (season 1)
-“Aang is gone and we need to find the new avatar”
-Tiny Korra bursts in
Korra: “Sup bitches! I’m the avatar”
-“Sure is kyoshi up in here”
———————————————————————-
(15 years later)
(Korra shows up in republic city)
Korra: Time to act like a female protagonist in the 2010s
(Proceeds to get arrested)
Lin: I’m a straight lace cop that is completely the opposite of my mother toph who has a metal pole up her ass.
Tenzin: I’m Aang’s son and I have to reign Korra in this season and will fail miserably.
Korra: I’m gonna slay at air bending
(Proceeds to get messed up)
Tenzin: Korra meet my family.
Pema: Hi, I’m the woman that is single handedly restoring the Air nomads until season 3. I also stole Tenzin from Lin
Jinora: Hi I’m Jinora, the only character that people like in all four seasons of the show and considered the best addition to the cast.
Ikki: I’m the annoying middle child that will piss off EVERYONE for stopping them from hearing about Zuko’s mom.
Meelo: I make fart jokes. I am one of the comic reliefs.
Korra: Well this is a thing… I’m gonna go pro bend
___________________________________
Bolin: Hey I’m the actual comic relief, and the second best character in the show. I will be trying to date you until you end up kissing my brother… in which case I will get over it after an episode
Mako: hey, im the tsundere dude that looks so generic that people wonder why im a main character. But apparently that’s sexy.
Korra: it is. I can’t wait to kiss you and cause more drama. But first a sport that makes very little sense and is really nerfed for the earth bending team.
(Winning at pro bending!)
Amon: I am part of the Equalist movement. A movement which actually makes little sense in retrospect because there are no rules descriminating against normal people, if anything it’s more like benders have it rough considering the amount of bending criminals.
Korra: He’s stealing bending! He must be stopped!
_____________________________________
Asami: Hey, I’m the hot non-bending rich girl that is a genuinely good person and I have way more chemistry with Korra than Mako, but for this season and next will be a Mako simp.
Mako: Cool
Korra: I hate her… but also am attracted to her.
Bolin: I’m just here to have fun
Hiroshi: I’m Asami’s father and totally cool with my daughter dating a filthy fire bender
_____________________________________
Tarrlok: I’m the sketchy mayor that is actually really creepy and trying to get you on bored to fight Amon.
Korra: I’m down.
(Joins the force and gets traumatized)
Korra: Yea… he is horrifying.
Lin: I’m quitting the force. Now for some character development.
_____________________________________
Bolin: Back to Probending
Tenzin: I was originally against this but now I’m a fan of this game.
(Their opponents cheat and win)
Tenzin: Is that ref Blind!? Wtf!
Korra: They cheated!
(Amon arrives and delivers karma by stealing the bending of the opponents)
Korra: okay that’s a bit Effed up.
____________________________________
Tarrlok: Now I’m gonna enforce some laws that will give the Equalists reasons to actually rebel
(Arrests Korea’s friends)
Korra: Could you not arrest my friends!
Tarrlok: No, now bend the knee
Korra: No, cause I realize you are a creepy f***er. And I will never let an obviously evil water bender trick me into helping ever again… (stay tuned for season two)
Tarrlok: Kidnapping it is!
(Reveals bloodbending)
Korra: OP please nerf
_____________________________________
(Korra learns about the blood bending past from Aang)
Aang: Long story short. Cameos and Yakone was a dick to everyone.
Korra: Dang.
(Everyone learns Tarrlok lied)
Tarrlok: Well it doesn’t matter, no one can beat me with my blood bending
Amon: I heard that you were talking s*** and you didn’t think that I would hear it.
(Steals Tarrlok’s bending)
Korra: I’m outtie (flees)
_________________________________
Amon: Time to take this city!
(Takes city)
Iroh: I’m a reference to Iroh and have Zuko’s voice. I’m immediately the best character this season. Unfortunately I’m useless right now
Korra: So we have to stop Amon. Oh look it’s the jerk mayor.
Tarrlok: Amon is actually my brother. He’s a blood bender.
Korra: Gasp! Oh wait I knew that
_____________________________________
Asami: Sorry dad, I’m not joining your equalists. Your group claims it’s fighting against controlling regimes only to become one as soon as you get power. It’s very hypocritical.
Hiroshi: Hey! Our protests were mostly peaceful. Now let us use our weapons to kill your friends.
_____________________________________
Amon: Ready for me to steal your bending
(Cue fight scene)
Amon: I stole your bending
Korra: not my air bending.
(Blasts him out the window causing him to expose himself as a bender)
Equalists: Gasps! Our leader is a bender. We’ve been lied to. This somehow ruins our movement.
Amon: (revealed to be Noatak) I must flee now.
____________________________________
Korra: Well I am only an airbender now.
Aang: but what if you weren’t. (Restores bending)
Korra: Bitching, time to fix everything
___________________________________
Noatak: Hey bro, sorry about stealing your bending let’s GTFO
Tarrlok: How about double suicide
(Off screen explosion)
____________________________________
Mako: So are we dating now
Korra: Yep!

lok remake idea without the rant
the legend of korra will get more episodes and filler content to showcase the krew interacting more and mako and bolin will get training from korra in fire and earth bending traditional forms which will help them improve ( though mako will still be the more talented bender of the 2.
korra is meant to be aangs opposite so how about korra training the bending members of her krew in contrast to how aang was trained by his gaang
regardless lok will end with makorra getting back together
“always thought that pacing was an issue with Legend of Korra too, having only 13 22-minute episodes to tell a season-long story made it feel rather rushed. I do like just watching the main cast hang out with each other and be friends. They have great chemistry! That was always something missing in Korra. “
1. the lok remake with asami being an equalist spy
I feel they planned on asami being an equalist spy but changed it when they got to the episode where it was supposed to be revealed with hiroshi but changed their minds without going back and changing anything they wrote beforehand.
( I dont get why asami wouldnt know hiroshi hated benders
“she would serve as a foil to Korra. Asami is rich, traditionally feminine, and when she and Mako meet she showers him with praise and lavish offerings. Korra’s a tomboy, doesn’t come from money, and she and Mako are constantly snarky toward each other. I think it would work well if when it was revealed Asami was a spy, Mako would have an epiphany where he saw the girl who really cared for him and liked him for him was actually Korra all along. it would have made the love triangle resolution a lot smoother, and given Mako a clear choice on which girl he should be with, even if it was an easy one.
(from someone I was talking to online I forgot what their tumblr url was -
and of course I agree with this post so I would make some changes with kuvira in both my ideas for a b4 remake and a full one
( though to be frank I prefer a book 4 remake which ends with makorra getting back together be made beforehand to make a rebuttal to the idea that the mako who made the mistakes he made in original lok. Where asami was just a sweet girl needed to be specifically punished for mishandling the love triangle. I feel korrasami was just popular due to the fact its a same sex ship and the desire to spite mako for daring to be flawed lets be real here korra was just as responsible for the love triangle as mako he didnt do anything that required punishment. ( korra kissed mako forcefully he kissed back in the heat of it due to his feelings and then kept it from asami and was a bit of a jerk thats all
he shouldnt have kept it a secret from asami
makos flaws and mistakes were acknowledged and treated as such in the original lok the claim that because book 1 ended with something good happening to him it was ignoring his mistakes or treating him as if he was in the right is bs.
)
but thats a personal note
and to be frank without doing that it would feel like I am demonizing asami to get her out of the way .
( I have to be frank asami in original lok didnt do much
as a part of if a love triangle with 2 girls and a guy just pair the girls together idiocy
in the b3 scene have kuvira introduced much earlier and have kuvira join the krew in b3
2. keep asami the way she is but include a conversation where asami believes that hiroshi let go of his hate for benders ( a private one which korra overhears )
also in the b2 moment emphasize that mako and asami didnt get back together but asami was interested in on him
and the scene before mako got arrested asami showed up to his room and tried asking him out making a move on him and he gave in ( she would have been making these attempts
mako had just given in due to lonelinness and didnt want to lose asami since in his eyes he lost korra and bolin and him grew distant
ikkinthekitsune . tumblr . com/post/109794670332/so-mako-didnt-have-any-unresolved-feelings-for#notes
As Cousin Tu said in Remembrances, Mako’s afraid of disappointing people and ends up inevitably disappointing everyone in his attempts to avoid disappointing anyone.
I don’t think he had feelings for Asami. I think he was really surprised when Asami kissed him the first time, but hoped that would be the end of it (he seemed really uncomfortable about it, to be honest).
Of course, that didn’t happen, because Asami was still looking to get back together with him (likely because of the instability in her own life). He didn’t really seem to respond until the scene immediately preceding his arrest, and even there, it took a lot of pushing to get him involved in anything romantic.
And so, I think Mako was more motivated by the desire not to upset her than because he thought she needed him. Of course, that just meant more hurt feelings in the end, but that didn’t mean that avoiding hurt feelings wasn’t what motivated him.
ikkinthekitsune . tumblr . com/post/125704875727/why-do-you-think-mako-was-afraid-of-disappointing#notes
Anonymous asked: Why do you think Mako was afraid of disappointing Asami in Book 2? It seemed like he was more afraid of losing/upsetting Korra than he was Asami. Because once Korra came back he totally forgot about Asami. That’s what made me feel like his interactions with her were more out of vulnerability after his breakup with Korra rather than being afraid of disappointing her.
I agree that Mako seemed more afraid of losing/upsetting Korra than Asami – the show made it pretty obvious which one of them Mako felt the strongest about! – but I don’t think it’s impossible for him to have felt really afraid of losing/upsetting Asami, too.
It seemed to me like Mako was reacting instinctively to situations as they came up. So, when Korra was gone and Asami was pushing to spark something, Mako was concerned mostly with losing/upsetting her (possibly exacerbated by him feeling like he already had lost Korra)… but when Korra came back, his fear of upsetting/losing her again overpowered any feelings he had towards Asami.
also introduce in b4 izumis daughter maybe have a scene where she gets a crush on mako but having solved his problems with emotional conflict and avoiding conflict he out right rejects her softly ( in book 2 when asami kissed him he looked uncomfortable with it an was glad that she didnt follow up he was so afraid of dissapointing people he couldnt even say no to asami (plus he was still hurt about breakup and wanted stability ) so mako learned ho w to say no and that sometimes in life you end up disappointing people that doesnt mean you will burn bridges
mako rejecting izumis daughter would represent him growing past his flaws of being so afraid of disappointing people he hurts everyone an example of maturity ( optional instead have the scene be mako sparring with iroh and izumis daughter and winning paralleling how korra first appeared winning with fire bending like how korra first appearance in b4 after the fight reminded me of makos first appearance )
this applies to both options
possibly have a conversation with katara about losing his parents at a young age and having to raise his sibling ( it would just be nice to see the krew (
maybe explore how there is triad spies in the police department and due to makos history some people suspect he is one or want to use him as a scapegoat ( an part of the reason mako did well in truth because mako kept to himself and focused on his work not socializing with his coworkers it prevented information from being leaked out when he got into a case
also have mako gain some special fire bending type
the purifying fire
An evolution of Energy Reading, allowing a firebender to cleanse dark energies in humans and spirits as well as neutralise poison and other toxins maybe even prevent someone from bending an element inside their body ( like nullifying blood bending) by burning the blood bending grip and stopping breath bending if the fire was used beforehand
be it the b4 remake or the full lok remake mako gets a purifying fire and heat sense though when it comes to purifying fire it would be a recent think b4 wise and he was experimenting with it when he broke free of a bloodbending grip
and it being just before he got news about korra
( or it happened a bit before that so he began on training himself to be able to control it at will before he immediately went to korra and figure out if it could effect poisons and toxins/korras physical issues
also change amons appearance as an adult so he would have a darker skin tone like he had when he was a kid ( possibly amon and korra would be related to each other given how kid amon resembled korra though I may be imagining things
also have the krew actually have bonding moments together expanding upon lok
“always thought that pacing was an issue with Legend of Korra too, having only 13 22-minute episodes to tell a season-long story made it feel rather rushed. I do like just watching the main cast hang out with each other and be friends. They have great chemistry! That was always something missing in Korra. “
and fire chakra deals with willpower and is blocked by shame have an arc where mako deals with his shame regarding his work with the triads (and in remake make it so while bolin worked the numbers mako did as well he had seen people be killed by triads and is partly ashamed of not doing anything (
which leads to makos growth as a firebender learning a purifying fire
I mean Japan associates fire with purification so it being possible to create a fire bending technique ire to purify your body of a benders attempt to control an element in your body and to purify poisons makes sense
and it would prove that general wrong
the purifying An evolution of Energy Reading, allowing a firebender to cleanse dark energies in humans and spirits as well as neutralise poison and other toxins maybe even prevent someone from bending an element inside their body ( like nullifying blood bending) by burning the blood bending grip and stopping breath bending if the fire was used beforehand
( actually it would make sense for mako to awaken this power in between b3 and b4 due to his wish that he could have helped Korra and after a conversation he heard/remembered like a kid wondering after hearing parents tell their kid that the fever is his body fighting off the infection if that means fire bending can be used he ended up trying to experiment to see if it is possible to develop it )
( post b3 he asked katara if she knows anyone who could help train him as a firebender ( in the b4 remake during the timeskip he learned how to fight h2h so there wont be any weaknesses to eploit he doesnt want to be used against korra like what happened with tenzin
( he ended up talking with zuko who he went on a bit of a spiritual journey with
( I mean bolin gained a special branch of bending ( him being the only one who uses it ) so why not having mako invent one
which is what happened with katara and toph)
or mako could expand lightning bending to reading the bioelectricity in someone’s body to tell when someone is lying/predict their next move during the b4 time skip he can tell when someone is lying
(I mean it is a skill that I can imagine would fit for a detective and something batman would like to get ( lots of people joked about lok being in Gotham and then compared mako to batman due to their backstory )
in this advent he would be shown doing the dual lightning trick that ozai did
fanons suggest)
give mako a moment with katara and/or zuko
mako was said to be zuko lite
which I can see but he also has similarities to katara
and it would be neat to have moments with them
like in the situation where asami wasnt an equalist spy which I will call lok remake option 2 ) zuko was there during remembrances and he brings up he made much worse mistakes when he was young and stupid
and zuko helped guide mako with his mistakes
and mako and kataras conversation will bring up the similarities of their backstories and how katara had to act like a parent to sokka etc
( mako in the lok remake keeps the scarf with his grandma outright refusing it because it was makos keepsake from his parents )
these are some of the ideas that could be used in the remake:

I saw some of the fandom reactions to Mako before watching tlok and after watching the first few episodes I was a little annoyed at how not terrible he is. When I think about the things that happened in the first two seasons I interpret it as him honestly not knowing what to do as opposed to wanting to be hurtful. He hasn’t had a parent since he was 8 and his only companion has been his little brother. Of course he knows nothing about communication or conflict resolution.
And Bryke just kept introducing potentially compelling storylines between Bolin and Mako and doing nothing with it or playing it off as a joke. The bending bros aren’t getting along in season two? We could’ve seen that the tension was due to Bolin wanting to be Mako’s brother and not his son and Mako not knowing how to let the dynamic of their childhood go. Instead, we got Bolin letting fame go to his head. Bolin decides to adopt Kai and mentions eating out of garbage cans. We could’ve seen them acknowledge the traumatizing nature of poverty and how both boys are projecting onto Kai in different ways, but no. Bolin’s just a goof, so funny. If Mako had to be a cop he could’ve had disagreements with Lin that lead to him explaining that something needed to be done to address poverty, because if there weren’t so many poor kids in the Republic City then the gangs wouldn’t have an endless stream of new recruits. We definitely should’ve seen Bolin genuinely concerned about the prospect of Mako going to prison, but stupid jokes were a better use of time I guess. So. Many. Missed. Opportunities.
also reference bolins supposed insecurity/ or feeling inferior to his brother for I remember that being stated this possibly motivation for what happened in b2 and a way he could be manipulated by varrick
also for wu change if we do a b4 remake before the full remake we go to wu being a woman as depicted here and then full remake with asami as an equalist spy with a kid wu
( I have noticed that every woman makos age that he knew wanted to get with him it would be neat for him to have a female friend who didnt want that
so in the asami as an equalist spy remake ( izumis daughter wouldnt be interested in him romantically since I wouldnt need to demonstrate makos growth)
or just kid wu in general
ikkinthekitsune . tumblr . com/post/147464055579/considering-you-understandably-have-some-issues
Biggest change to the initial setup? No Prince Wu. Instead of an obnoxious overgrown child of a Prince, our heir apparent is introverted, lacks the confidence to refuse just about anything, and is terrified of being in front of crowds. He’s the (implied-to-be illegitimate) child of a distant relative of Hou-Ting and a Republic City citizen. Oh, and he’s all of ten years old. In other words, everything about him screams “Raiko chose this kid as a convenient puppet” (instead of offhandedly implying it once and forgetting about it as was done with Wu). All of the time Wu wastes on comic relief in After All These Years is used to explain the political situation: the prince is a figurehead meant to display the trappings of royalty and legitimize Raiko’s chosen advisors. Kuvira’s supporters hate him not just because he’s royalty but also because they think he’s essentially giving the Earth Kingdom away to an imperialistic foreign power. Mako’s there to protect him both because Raiko ordered him to and because he’s one of the few cops the prince is comfortable around; as such, Mako actually feels bad for the kid and wants to protect him. (This prince is legitimately terrified by the scary adults throwing pies at him and bursts into tears as soon as they’re out of harm’s way. Mako comforts him and makes him feel a little better.) Korra Alone is close to perfect and stays pretty much as-is, albeit with Korra’s loss in the Earth Rumble ring being far less embarrassing – she gets some hits in, and the end makes it even clearer how distracted she was by Dark Avatar Korra. The Coronation follows up on the political changes. Instead of being all excited about how awesome he thinks the ceremony is going to be, the prince is afraid – of being on stage (Mako assures him he’ll do fine), of being king (Raiko assures him that his advisers will do all the work), and of Kuvira (Raiko assures him that she’ll step down). The prince thanks Kuvira and lets her speak the way Wu did in the show, except that it’s sort of implied that he’s looking for an excuse to not have to stay up at the podium for longer than necessary. Kuvira, of course, uses the opportunity to take over… and specifically points to Raiko’s use of the prince to control the Earth Kingdom as a reason why she’s justified in doing so. (The prince hides behind Mako when this happens. =( ) Some of the time saved by not having Wu freak out about the loss of his throne is used to show us the meeting of the world leaders, where they talk about why they think Kuvira is dangerous (she’s very with-me-or-against-me) and what they can do to stop her (not much as long as she limits her ambitions to the Earth Kingdom).
The Republic City part of Reunion is way more tense because Team Avatar are looking for a terrified kidnapped child instead of an aggravating jerk. (The prince still gets to ask Korra to go into the Avatar State because he wants to see her eyes glow, but it’s actually kind of endearing since he’s a little kid.)
and we could have cute moments with korra and mako taking care of kid wu
also we can make it so mako has a good rep among the orphans
It is a touch weird that the moment Bolin and Mako get some actual characterisation, suddenly people dislike Bolin and accuse Mako of hijacking the show.
One episode devoted to a policeman attempting to crack a conspiracy does not a hijacked show make, particularly Korra’s business will probably eat the rest of the show. Mako’s finally got something to do beyond just being Korra’s bf/probending… and people are complaining about it?
Also I’d wish people’d stop calling Bolin “Sokka-lite”, he’s his own character and he might be more comic relief than the others he still has a personality of his own. Mako treating him like a child probably didn’t have the best effect on him, both making him kind of act childish which in turn leads to Mako being dismissive of him. Just saying that there’s actually a reason for why he acts as he does, rather than just “lol look at the funny guy!”.
Considering how, even in the previous season, Mako’s inability to take his sibling seriously or accept his help lead to him being abducted by Equalists, it’s not really surprising that Mako wasn’t really quick to react when Bolin ended up in an abusive relationship. He probably chalked it up to another of Bolin’s “wacky hijinx” and chose not to get involved when really, if there was a situation that required his surrogate parent touch, that would have been it.
I don’t know, I think that they do have unique personalities between the two of them, and their actions do make a degree of sense within the context of the show. Mako treating his brother like a child and dismissing him lead to Bolin being more open to being manipulated by Varrick and the movie star lifestyle, for example.
Can’t help but think that Mako really makes these problems for Bolin, both by treating him like a baby and dismissing anything he does as childish, which leads to Bolin making stupid decisions as he hasn’t really been allowed to make adult decisions or take responsiblity for stuff. Which leads to him falling in with gangsters when he attempts to help Mako raise some cash. Or dating an unstable and violent person. Or getting confused as to what the concept of “acting” is…
I like the characterisation within Legend of Korra, the behaviour of all the characters makes sense within the context of the show itself, just like with Aang and the characters in Airbender. Of course Korra would be a little arrogant, she’s know she was special from a very young age, but that doesn’t make her a bad person. Of course Kya would be more “free spirited” than her brothers, she has neither the responsiblity of continuing the Air Nomad culture like Tenzin nor the need to overcompensate for a lack of bending like Bumi.
Actually, come to think of it, parenting and how it can effect a character’s personality seems to be a theme running through both the two shows. Korra’s isolated childhood made her kind of naive about how the world functions, just like how Mako’s babying did the exact same thing to Bolin.
Mako and Bolin are actually working out to be pretty interesting. Which is actually pretty good going for characters pitched just as comic relief and “Zuko without the angst”.
source:ikkinthekitsune . tumblr.com/post/63844176139/random-thoughts-on-bolin-and-mako#notes
maybe we can emphasize the above effects on mako and bolin by having katara come in and talk with them about their relationship and gives mako advice
lets carry on the mako babying bolin issues and carry it on in b3 where katara brings it up or they can have a scene where katara brings it up when she meets them either trying to warn mako about babying bolin at southern water tribe
or the conversation begins while they are on the boat to confront zaheer.
where mako learns to stop babying him
and zuko an mako can have a conversation where mako talks about his own issues/past
and makos mistakes are brought up and zuko will act as makos iroh
bringing up how mako was so afraid of dissapointing people that he dissapointed everyone ( which works in any of the remake ideas be it a lok remake with asami an equalist spy or not )
where mako trains in the traditional style of fire bending under zuko and its brought up that while probending is good and all probending abandons the spirituality and development of the traditional styles)
and have mako and zuko talk
so the meditation would lead to his development ( maybe mako and zuko have talk while Korra is bed ridden and zuko offers to guide him and be his fire bending teacher since mako felt guilty since if he was stronger he could have taken out the water woman much earlier)
( maybe his part of remembrances with some focus on his issues which would lead to his thoughts on korra and how she inspires him)
( its mentioned that mako and bolin in b1 have begun to eat more nutritious food ( mako especially always made sure that bolin got food more often then him when they were on the street)
and mako began to train his body more to learn how to fight without his bending so he trained with korra after bolin was kidnapped.
mako turning down zukos granddaughter after the timeskip remembering zukos talk about how makos flaw being so afraid of disappointing people he disappoints everyone and while wanting to not hurt people is good sometimes the desire to do that can hurt more people
mako realizes its best to straight up turn her down immediately for not doing so may cause a situation where he caused her more pain.
like how if he just turned asami down when she kissed him or when she asked him out for a date rather then avoiding it due to desire to not hurt her the pain she would feel would have been lesser then it had been in b2 finale etc
and mako and korra could have the talk which makes it so that mako was helping korra even before tenzin came in while asami completely failed in helping/supporting korra
Anonymous asked: I don’t know if you’ll invest some time writing a fic or at least analyze this scenario wherein Korra talks to Mako instead of @s $ami (Remembrances). How would the conversation have gone? Would Mako have been more effective? It’s a shame that Tenzin’s speech in Remembrances was the only thing we got in the series in terms of summarizing Korra’s arc– in an episode where some fans would prefer to skip because it’s just a “clip show”.
I’m not sure I’d get the time to write a fic, but I can definitely analyze the way the conversation might have gone.
So. First things first: Mako would have been a bit more confrontational initially. He definitely wouldn’t have used tea as a pretext to get her to talk; instead, I think he’d ask her, “Is there something wrong? You’ve been really distant lately and I’m starting to get worried.”
That, I think, could lead into an explanation for the only-writing-to-Asami thing, which would be really valuable in terms of Korra’s characterization. Mako could confirm that he’s willing to support her no matter what, and Korra could agree to try to let him in more.
From there, the conversation would move back onto the same general track: Korra’s thinking about what Toph said, and it’s really weighing on her.
“I’ve just been thinking about something Toph said. She told me that the world doesn’t need me and it’s basically pointless to try and stop Kuvira.”
I think Mako might actually ask whether Korra was mischaracterizing Toph’s philosophy – “Are you sure that’s what she meant?“ If he did, I think the conversation would go down a much more productive line much faster, because he’d get Korra thinking about why Toph said what she said (ie. she was challenging Korra to push back against the idea that all human efforts amount to naught) instead of framing it as too ridiculous to consider.
It seems unlikely that Mako would be able to work in a speech like Tenzin’s (though I suppose his thing about how much she inspires him could be repurposed to that end =) ), but I think he’d be much more effective at guiding Korra away from unproductive lines of conversation (“am I a good or bad Avatar?”) toward the issues that were really bothering her (“how should I understand what Toph said?”).

( maybe mako and tenzin could both get scenes with helping korra where tenzin just adds to makos support for korra.
or in the option 2 remake
( this would be for the and book 4 remake)
it would be stated korra only sent the letter ( it was implied to be only one letter given the wording) and korra wouldnt see any letter asami sent back.
and that she sent the letter because she crossed out mako and bolin as options
( it would be stated that she didnt want to burden them which is why she sent a letter to asami who wasnt as close to korra as mako and bolin)
plus asami had to build up her company after taking the loss and rebuild on who she is etc
( korra sending a letter to asami doesnt mean she is closer to asami or asami understands her better)
(and it would emphasized that korra isnt as close to asami as she is to mako and bolin by creating a distance between them or focus on korras interaction with mako and bolin and treating it differently from korras relationship with
like it being outright stated korras had issues with focusing on korra the avatar and not korra the person.
(on the option 2 remake where we keep asami the way she was
I would have asami leave the the group in b3 ( and rejoin at the end framing her helping korra get dressed as partly motivated by guilt of not being there) a
and have kuvira be the one who temporarily joins team avatar
option 1 and 2 remake
either have bolin genuinely worried about mako being arrested and while he doesnt believe it was varrick he believes in mako
or have it addressed and and have it hang in the back of makos mind while imprisoned
old-and-new-friends . tumblr . com/post/641151506271420416
Bolin goes "sowwy?" And Mako's response is "Don't worry about it".
Lin goes right back to being someone Mako looks up to.
That's the end of it.
Whether it slowly rots in Mako's head or not, is never addressed. If he's mad, he doesn't show it. If he distrusts them, he doesn't show it. If he lives with the idea that the people he cares about don't care about him, he doesn't show it.
It's just dropped because at the end of the day, no one actually cared about it. That's just sad.
and maybe change it so lin does look into it
in regards to the book 2 mako telling raiko it will be again emphasized that mako was in the right to tell raiko
megashadowdragon . tumblr . com/post/663527012751769600/lok-remake-ideas-and-bit-of-a-rant
mako is pretty much a combination of katara and zuko
korra to aang
bolin to sokka
mako to zuko and katara
he was described as zuko minus the angst beforehand
mako and zuko were both jerks with hearts of gold who had some form of emotional conflict ( of course the difference means that mako didnt need to suffer the way zuko did, if mako needed to be punished for his mistakes with how his story ended then zuko should have been punished with his ending
ikkinthekitsune . tumblr . com/post/72568532337/makos-biggest-character-flaw-is-his-inability-to#notes
Anonymous asked: Mako's biggest character flaw is his inability to make a sound decision and commit to it. At first, this is frustrating, but what else is to be expected from an Expy of Zuko, who spent nearly that whole series jumping sides?
I suppose. XD I wouldn’t exactly call Mako a Zuko Expy, though… at least not more than I’d call him a Katara Expy. He’s “the firebender” like Zuko and “the one forced to grow up too fast” like Katara, but he’s definitely his own person rather than a copy of either of them.
Looking at Mako and Zuko’s respective indecisiveness, for instance, it isn’t coming from the same place at all.
Zuko’s indecisiveness was always a sort of nature-vs.-nurture sort of thing. Zuko’s innate temperament was good and he had a functional conscience that told him not to do bad things… but he was brought up in an environment in which it was impossible to gain the respect from his father that he so desperately desired without doing bad things. His inability to commit comes from his own clashing desires and was resolved when he realized that he might never get validation from Ozai but that was okay.
Mako’s indecisiveness, on the other hand, is much more other-centric. Most of the things Mako struggles with involves a situation in which someone is bound to get hurt no matter what, and he’s forced to decide which response is the lesser of two evils. He has one primary motive – to avoid causing pain – but it’s in conflict with itself even when there isn’t a second motive for it to conflict with.
That difference, I suspect, explains the differing audience reaction, too. Zuko’s conflict is a rather masculine, Hero’s Journey “confrontation with the father” sort of thing, while Mako’s is decidedly not.
mako never needed to go through the suffering that zuko did during atla during lok ( mako did suffer and go through hardship since his parents died before lok began
people had ignored that and just saw him as the guy with 2 girls who are attracted to him etc and only started to like him after he had gotten stuff taken away which is annoying
#lok #atla #mako #katara #fanwank #because I do #remember them complaining about how Mako was nothing like their precious saintly Katara that could do no wrong #and how Mako didn't deserve to be compared to Katara #like pls they fufill the same role and function both story/plot-wise and group dynamics-wise #they both make a crapton of mistakes that they rectify before the end of the series #they both have a sibling that fufills the comic relief role and also has their own character arc #they're both bending prodigies #hell they even have the same temperment to a point #and people got so angry
mako and katara both had something from a dead parent which acted as a memento ( which they wore on their neck)
and were both hated for having trauma in a way that arent easily romanticized
for the remakes
I would get rid of the retcon bryke made of his motives as “fame, money” rather than “pro-bending was important to my brother and it was an opportunity to earn money honestly even though it represented a risk and Toza was probably the first person to show us any genuine kindness without trying to use us but I definitely didn’t trust him at first, etc. etc.” in every version ( and bring it up in remembrances ep in the b4 remake where we go with the pro-bending was important to my brother and it was an opportunity to earn money honestly even though it represented a risk and Toza was probably the first person to show us any genuine kindness without trying to use us but I definitely didn’t trust him at first, etc. etc instead of the fame and money retcon.
and in the full lok remake we will still say that he went to pro bending because “ pro-bending was important to my brother and it was an opportunity to earn money honestly even though it represented a risk and Toza was probably the first person to show us any genuine kindness without trying to use us but I definitely didn’t trust him at first, etc. etc
“
(or maybe make it so that in the full lok remake
( I would bring republic city hustle into an episode
but maybe give it a dark twist in that the gangsters did have toza killed ( but when bolin wasnt looking ( the confrontation did happen but they said that toza would have to stay away from those boys in exchange claiming they dont want his bad influence
and while mako was away from them they would tell mako to kill toza in exchange for never harming bolin and letting them go this would be a source of guilt and blocking the fire chakra for mako
you know it would be interesting if makos lightning bending evolved so he could read the electrical signals in the brain ( at first he had to touch someones head) but eventually he could read them by just standing there at first it was just being able to be a lie detector ( I mean he would be the 2nd police officer member of team avatar ( toph so why not create a fire bending equivalent to lie detection)
maybe in the scenario where asami was an equalist spy he would think about that when he heard stuff about bio electricity after overhearing varrick/bolin talk about something varrick said.
and after some training ( like sometime after b4 he trained that ability so he can read a persons moves before they do them ( right before)
which would parallel the smooth moves that amon pulled where he subtly bloodbent people as they fought to guide them ( which is a theory I had seen)
since amon and his brother can foil/parallel mako and bolin ( heck amons brother was once cute and soft reminding me a bit of bolin )
amons fake story to mako’s real story
and in the b4 remake ( keeping the past volumes same ) he just got stronger to keep up with korra for he feels if he was able to take down the water arm lady sooner korra wouldn't have gotten captured
or mako just remains the same level of strength
( 3 ways to go
( some of the ideas above will remain the same for the full lok remakes
1. a book 4 remake ( fem wu) and then a full lok remake with asami as an equalist spy ( kid wu)
2.a full lok remake where asami remains the same ( kid wu) and in this one we have asami go back to republic city due to business concerns ( like she had an arrangement for a meeting and korra agreed that she doesnt need to come with them and can leave when its too close for comfort . ( so we can keep some of korra and asamis friendship scenes) or some other excuse to separate her from the krew so kuvira can come in
3. where we keep the lok remake with a equalist spy even though we don't get a b4 remake . (kid wu
ikkinthekitsune . tumblr . com/post/111088014089/wouldnt-it-be-great-if-it-was-actually-kuvira#notes
Anonymous asked: Wouldn't it be great, if it was actually Kuvira, who was one of the members of team Avatar instead of Asami? Or if she was introduced somewhere in B2 as Mako's partner in the force? I know it would've change the story a lot, but imagine the level of emotional investment in Korra/Kuvira B4 conflict, if Kuvira was actually the reversed Zuko of new TA. She starts as lawful police officer, travels with the Krew to Zaofu and gets literally possessed by Su's ideas of progress in B3.
Kuvira as a member of Team Avatar would have been amazing. It’d have definitely added a ton of weight to Book 4.
I think her backstory in Zaofu is pretty important to her character, though, so I can’t see her joining the team any sooner than Book 3. So here’s what I’d do, changing as little of the first half of the show as possible:
Turn Asami into an airbender. This would create a perfectly reasonable transition point for Asami and the Fire Ferret trio to go separate ways – she’d leave with Tenzin to go to the Northern Air Temple in In Harm’s Way. That’d leave an empty spot in Team Avatar as of The Metal Clan. Introduce Korra and Kuvira early in The Metal Clan. Maybe she’d come over to Korra after Su introduced herself but before Su called Korra on her lie – she’d tell Korra how much the change Korra made in the world inspired her, and maybe express a bit of frustration that Su didn’t mention that she was her foster child. Have Kuvira assist Su in teaching Korra to metalbend – say, Su uses Kuvira to demonstrate techniques on, or something, then has her go back to her guard duties. Involve Kuvira directly in Team Avatar’s search for the traitor. It’d be a good way to show how aggressive she can be towards people who betray her trust, as well as give her more of an opportunity to become closer to the team. Have Su send Kuvira along with Team Avatar to find Aiwei. This is the real changeover – from here on, she takes much of Asami’s role. Korra and Kuvira are the ones who stay behind when Mako and Bolin go into town, giving them more time to talk. Kuvira’s the one Mako sends off with Korra on Naga. This requires some rethinking in regards to their capture – earthen barriers aren’t going to mean anything to her. I’m thinking they get taken by surprise and the Earth Queen’s forces threaten Naga (offscreen; Kuvira tells Korra about it when she wakes up). The adventure in the desert goes differently (the escape would be more about Kuvira being an unexpected metalbender in a metal airship than about the airship being a hunk of junk), but it offers a good opportunity for Kuvira to be a bit overly willing to do nasty things to the airship crew and Korra to hold her back. If Korra still ends up frying the sandshark, Kuvira kind of calls her out on it. ;) The fight on Laghima’s Peak goes a bit differently – Kuvira doesn’t get thrown off the side by a combustion blast incidentally, but instead jumps over the side purposefully in order to save Tonraq. Kuvira wants to go to Republic City to make sure Korra’s going to be alright, but Su tells her she can’t. Cue a very similar Book 4, except that Korra is a lot more invested in Kuvira’s fate, Bolin has a better reason to side with her, and we’ve already seen some of the characteristics that define Kuvira, like her aggression, inability to deal with betrayal, and her issues with Su.
in a full lok remake it would be emphasized that aang didnt invite kya and bumi on those trip because he felt they would find it boring since it was mainly a spiritual journey/monk stuff with the fun parts that tenzin mentioned just being a break from the monk stuff ( the point was to be a spiritual journey and explore air nomad/spiritual sites to learn about the history) and that the fun stuff were just small parts which could be called breaks from the air nomad stuff
also in the full lok remake mako would be outright called a prodigy and the reason he wasnt stronger was due to lack of training. and spiritual issues
It is a touch weird that the moment Bolin and Mako get some actual characterisation, suddenly people dislike Bolin and accuse Mako of hijacking the show.

"they can take down the license plate number and track us down though." asami pointed out. and then not only did korra get arrested but asami got in trouble because it happened in her car, so overall it would be even worse. "i didn't say that at all. maybe you're in there with the clause that if i die in a korra related incident you get nothing and it all goes to bolin and mako instead." asami said, laughing along. it wasn't like any of it was serious. given korra's lifestyle and title asami was much more worried about losing her girlfriend than anything happening the other way around. she got involved in fights once they were already happening. korra tended to run in and start them herself. "that's correct. i'm your boring and uptight girlfriend and i would like a break from any terror for the next five days at least." preferably much much longer than that. "see now that's perfect. who wouldn't love to taze someone with that?" asami was surprised for a second as she was lifted, despite having been the one to request it, but broke into a laugh after a moment, letting korra take her weight. "alright good. too long and i will defintiely fall asleep on you."
"okay, but what if i just don't get caught? they can't arrest me for reckless driving if i drive too fast to catch them." they replied with a cocky grin, tossing her ponytail dramatically "are you telling me that i'm not in your will? i get nothing if you're dead or in a coma? horrible, we need to break up, how dare you do this to me?" korra laughed, knowing that she and asami both needed the break after whatever the hell that had been. "fine, fine, i will strike terror into the heart of some sad teenage boy another day. you're so boring." they immediately pulled out their phone, googling frog taser and immediately turning her screen to show asami the results. "you're absolutely getting this, it's the best thing i've ever seen in my life." looking down at asami, korra bent to slip an arm under her knees and lifting her up pretty easily. "i definitely can. i don't think we're too far, come on."

Top 5 TLOK moments or scenes etc
Thank you so much!! This was, like, a lot harder then I thought it’d be, haha.
[FIVE]
That scene where Mako shoots Amon with lightning. Why one may wonder? ......... It’s entirely because of that face. That’s it.Honestly it might be the most detailed expression we got from Mako. The way his nostril was flared, the scrunched bridge of his nose. There is clear strain and anger there and I love this expression so much. I mean Mako shooting lightning was boss but it’s was this that really made it great, haha.
[FOUR]
Asami fucking taking the glove from her father and then not only zapping him but KOing the fucking lieutenant, which had single-handedly taken down both Mako and Bolin in a previous episode. Her shakily taking that glove and Mako’s soft “no” before she decimates them. Asami is so god damn amazing. She deserves the world.
[THREE]
Lin’s sacrifice. I loved everything about it, it was so great. The way she absolute tore up the airship with the music playing behind it. And then, even on her knee’s she held her head high. Ah, and that whole part where she was slowly falling after her bending was taken? It was just so good!
[TWO]
Korra gets the last of the poison out of her body. The music! The pain! “That fight is over” I just love it so much. The way the music shifts as she gets the very last of the poison out of her body. It’s so god damn amazing and perfect. Seriously, my heart cries every time I watch it.
[ONE]
It probably comes as no surprise when I say my very top is Mako’s sacrifice. You have this great moment leading up to it with Mako and Bolin. And the music was a m a z i n g. Along with the coloring, the intensity, Mako’s gorgeous, messy, “I could die rn but at least I die sexy” hair. It’s just a great scene!!!
#LoK#this was so much harder then I thought#there are so many good scenes#notable mentions#korrasami ending#Bolin Lin and Su tear down a building#Bolin yelling for Opal when she'd downed#''Mako I love You'' in episode 3 when Mako yeets an equalist off of Bolin#Tonrok holding Korra after she was poisoned#i probably should have put one of those ahead of five#Asami Mako and Bolin getting arrested#that one moment with Lin and Mako standing at the part in the start of s4#but that's just how i be i guess#BOTH OF MAKO'S FIGHTS AGAINST MING HUA#pick a secne where Bolin lavabends#the scene where Mako and Kai parkour through Ba Sing Se and Bolin tries to be polite to the ppl their jumping all around as he follows#hayleysayshay

Imagine getting annoyed when Korra puts herself in danger because you're in love with her
As a strong bender around Korra’s age Tenzin thought you’d be a perfect companion for her and so he sent you to the water tribe compound before him to meet Korra. Ever since that first encounter you wondered if Tenzin was psychic as well as a master Airbender. You instantly connected with Korra and became fast friends. Your feelings quickly grew to more and you realised you were in love with the avatar long before she moved to Republic City. She was strong and sweet but also cocky and dramatic which you loved. The only downside was her lack of self-regard. Korra could be reckless and every time you saw her come back with physicals injuriess or emotional wounds it hurt you too. You tried telling her to be more careful but she never listened. She threw herself into the fight against Amon and then Tarlock too when he brought in his non-bender curfews. You watched in horror as she almost got into a fistfight with the northern water tribe representative in the middle of the street. You agreed what he was doing was wrong and were very upset Asami, Mako and Bolin had been arrested but you thought Korra’s behaviour was just out of hand. You finally managed to get her back to your apartment without being arrested but Korra didn’t seem happy about that. She started ranting about Tarlock and you finally snapped.
"Korra you can't just jump into dangerous situations like that avatar or not!" you cried. "Why can’t I?" Korra asked "i’m literally the most protected person in the world, i have the avatar state to save me". "So you just put your life at risk at every opportunity?". "Our friends were in danger you really expected me to sit back and let it happen?" Korra shot back. "There was nothing you could do but you risked your life on a fool's errand that had little chance of success". "Maybe but I had to do something. It doesn’t matter if I get hurt in the long run as long as Amon is stopped" Korra nodded adamantly. "That’s not true!" you yelled "Korra If you get hurt we all get hurt too. You being in pain isn’t something we just ignore. If you saved me at the expense of yourself I wouldn’t be happy I'd be just as bad". "Why?" Korra cried and you sighed "because I love you, you idiot!". Silence followed and Korra blinked "you...what?". You sighed "I'm in love with you Korra and have been for months...you're pretty oblivious". "I...I guess I am" Korra nodded "but why?". You paused "why what?". "Why do you love me? How...". You sighed "I mean I guess that's a hard question and at the same time an easy one. Ever since I met you I've been mesmerised. I've never known a person be such a paradox. You're the strongest most confident person i’ve ever known and at the same time you're so gentle and naive. You're so intelligent and then other times you just jump into things blindly. You can be closed off but are also so loving and caring to everyone. You have the literal world on your shoulders but then little things like watching pro-bending excite you. You can be so hot and attractive and then also be so adorable I'd punish anyone for hurting you. You're just one in a million and not because you're the avatar but because there’s no one like you, Korra. That's why I love you". Korra stared at you "you really feel all that about me?". You nodded "so I guess the only question is...have I just made a fool of myself? How do you feel about me?". Korra looked down and you felt your heart skip. "I...I feel a bit differently" Korra admitted. You winced but nodded "that's okay...". "I don’t think you're a paradox I just think you're amazing". You looked up daring to believe this was what you hoped it was. "You've always been there for me and I feel like I've known you years not months. You’re one of the few people who I know only has purely good intentions for me and I like the person I am around you. You were my first proper friend and I think...there’s nobody else I'd want to become something more with than you". "You would?" you grinned and Korra smiled "yeah so...can I kiss you or are you still angry at me for risking my life?". You smiled "I'm still angry but a kiss might actually solve that". Korra smiled "well I'm happy to try as many times as you need" and she leant into you.
A while later you gasped for breath pulling away but Korra didn’t seem to want to let this moment go. She kept her strong arms around you and peppered your neck with kisses. "Shouldn’t we go bail Asami and the others out of prison?" you asked. Korra looked up at you mischief in her eyes "we could...or we could let Tenzin so it. I alerted him to the situation so he’s probably almost there now...so it might be pointless for us to go too". "Korra are you really ditching your friends to make out with me?". Korra blushed "well I'd probably just aggravate the situation, if anyone can get them out its Tenzin. So I think I'm exactly where I need to be" she grinned that crooked grin that made you weak. "You know I'd be inclined to agree" you nodded and gripped her tunic tightly taking her back towards you.

Tenzin: You really put aside everything and came all this way for me? How did you even get here so fast?
Mako: Several traffic violations.
Korra: Three counts of resisting arrest.
Bolin: Roughly thirteen cans of energy drinks.

I read about your "Avatar Bolin AU" and I got curious. And what would the end of season 3 and the whole season 4 be like? (+2 season, if you want, although Bolin would really not trust Unalaq-) Is Bolin still poisoned? Who is working for Kuvira now? By the way, I really liked your idea and the idea of "Someone is the Avatar, and Korra is not"
Huh that's actually very interesting. I think B3 would still go similarly, though I'm also 50/50 if Zaheer could even carry Bolin's beefy boy ass like he did with Korra.
I feel like our short king would struggle lmao
Though if we really wanna divert from canon, I can see Bolin being more receptive to Zaheer's rethoric due to having seen what the Earth Queen's rule has done to his own family and also because of his own upbringing disillusioning him towards governments and law enforcement, since republic city officilas apparently did fuck all about the many orphans.
It could provide some interesting drama between Bolin and Mako who probably might make a bond with Lin. Not sure if Mako would become a detective in this AU, probably feeling a lot of need to protect his brother.
Also the conversation between Zaheer and Bolin would be so funny.
Zaheer: we want to help the common people by removing leaders from power
Bolin: ok. Yay ❤️
Zaheer:*whispering to P'Li* what do I do now
I would also like to still see Bolin and Ghazan have that weird bantery mentor/student thing and maybe even expand on it.
LET THEM BE HOMIES LET GHAZAN BE BOLIN'S COOL WEIRD CRIMINAL UNCLE IT'S ALL I ASK
So I could see the Red Lotus storyline going completely differently depending on how much the Red Lotus would change their approach to Bolin. Since I'm not even sure they got arrested in this AU bcs in canon they were captured during their attempt at kidnapping Korra. So they might be mildly saner in this AU lol, or at least be more understanding of Bolin since it's not like he ever "had a chance" to join them.
It would also be an interesting look into them and how dedicated they are to their ideology. Since they wanted to kill the Avatar in order to stop the Avatar Cycle but Bolin being an Avatar more open to their ideas might cause them to think more about this. Maybe they'd even be divided with, for example, Zaheer trying to continue the mission of poisoning Bo, while maybe Ghazan would feel more conflicted and perhaps even consider other options.
So perhaps Bolin still gets poisoned but this time Ghazan (and maybe Ming-Hua, depending on who she sides with) would try and help him.
I imagine Bolin would still need a lot of time, just like Korra, to recover and he would be in the South Pole a lot. I imagine Mako would be with him, as his brother. So would Korra, whom I imagine as Katara's apprentice in this AU. I would love to imagine some Katara and Bolin interactions bcs I think that they're actual pretty similar in many aspects.
Katara and Bolin paralleling each other
Discussion of Mako and Sokka's similarities vs Bolin and Katara's similarities.
Long ass post on these two pairs of siblings
I think Bolin would be more willing to accept other people's help than Korra, so he could recover emotionally more quickly, bit I think he'd still be very wary and more insecure in himself. Maybe he'd really fall wayyy to deep into his coping mechanism and rely on people directing him even more than usual and the plot of B4 is him finally becoming more independent.
I actually find Asami working with Kuvira very interesting. I don't think she'd work directly under Kuvira, but she could be sort of a business partner, supplying weapons and mechas to the Earth Empire. And then having a crisis when those weapons are eventually used against Repuvlic City because she should rethink being a war profiteer tbh.
I also think it would be interesting to see Bolin interact with Kuvira in an AU where she hasn't been manipulating him for years. Since he has a more personal connection to the Earth Kingdom than Korra. Also, since I want Wei to be Bolin's romantic interest in this AU (bcs I'm me), I think this would provide an interesting extra layer of drama lol. Let Wei radicalise Bolin against Kuvira it's the right thing to do.
I honestly really like this AU bcs Bolin would be a fascinating Avatar due to his past.
And I love Korra as the avatar but girlie deserves a break lol.

Legend of Korra Rant about queer representation, capitalism and police
Okay...so if you have been following me or liking/reblogging my stuff then you know that I was an OG Korra stan. Last year when Avatar and legend of Korra came back on Netflix a lot of queer people watched, anticipating the queer representation only to be disappointed in the surprising lack of overt on screen queerness As a side, I still just don’t understand how people think that Korra is straight or cis. Idk, there is this theory/head canon I have that Korra is Two-Spirit because she is indigenous, exudes both masculine and feminine energy and literally had hundreds of past lives inside of her for the first 17 years of her life.
Anyway, a lot of queer radicals that I have met who have watched the show have complained about Legend of Korra being queer bait and pro police-state, and pro capitalism and it kinda pisses me off, because that’s not true. This show doesn’t take a side. For better or for worse, It shows the complexities of a city in the middle of an industrial boom, but that doesn’t mean it is pro-capitalist. The show wouldn’t have even touched what hoarding wealth does to communities if that were true. There would have been no representation of poverty or how KIDS get caught up in gangs in order to survive, nor would they have shown how Hiroshi Sato’s alliance to the Equalists almost destroyed his company or his daughter’s WHOLE LIFE. Like Asami was straight up on the verge of financial ruin in Book 2. THATS A LOT FOR AN 18 YEAR OLD TO DEAL WITH. Concerning the Metalbending police force: I don’t know why people tend to forget this EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND PIVOTAL SCENE in Book 1 where the police cut the electricity to the homes of nonbenders. Police Chief Saikhan was kettling the nonbenders and threatening them with violence if they didn’t go home and follow that ridiculous curfew instated by Tarrlok that SCREAMED McCarthyism DESPITE the police INSTIGATING the situation. One of the nonbenders says “Please help us, You’re our Avatar too!” and Korra steps in threatening both the police and Tarrlok before he has Asami arrested for breaking curfew and throws Mako and Bolin in Jail for good measure. That’s police brutality. And that scene in Book 1 should have been enough to show that this show was not pro police or pro police-state (See: Kuvira being an evil dictator -_-)
The police aren’t shown in a good light in this show. In fact they are almost always seen as an oppressive force, even when Lin Beifong is Chief.
As far as queer representation goes, it was 2014. Gay Marriage wasn’t legal in the USA. Nickelodeon was fucking with the creators. They gave us what they could without having the show be outright cancelled. Korra and Asami holding hands while walking into the spirit portal was SO important to us!
ALSO it wasn’t like Mike and Bryan pulled a JK Rowling and was like yep Korra’s gay and then NEVER delivered. Not only did they immediately deliver Korrasami content, they told people that Korrasami was canon and everyone who disliked that could die mad about it. Then They gave us the continuation of the story in comic book form with LOTS of sweet Korrasami moments, and THENturned around and said YOU KNOW WHAT? KYOSHI’S BI TOO! HAVE SOME BOOKS ABOUT IT. Mike and Bryan and the whole creative Team Avatar have delivered some of the most culturally aware content that I have ever seen in my entire life, and I hope they keep creating more. Avatar the Last Airbender, Legend of Korra and The Rise/Shadow of Kyoshi are gifts that we should be so lucky to have.

Beginnings, Part 1
While being healed by the Fire Sages, Korra explores her past lives and experiences the journey of Wan, the first Avatar, who lived 10,000 years previous. At this time, humans lived on the shells of the giant lion turtles to protect themselves from the spirit wilds and other dangers from the spirit world that freely roam the physical world. Wan and his friends live in poverty and hunger, under the nepotistic family that rules his city. As a form of protection, the lion turtles grant the power to bend elements for a limited time when humans venture into the wilds. After Wan violates the prohibition against bringing his bending into the city in order to steal food for his friends, he is banished from the city, but allowed to keep his firebending. He manages to survive by befriending the spirits in the forest, but two years later, he sets out on a journey of exploration, where he eventually encounters two powerful spirits battling each other. One of the spirits asks Wan for assistance, when he is held down by the other, and Wan separates the two. While the spirit escapes, the other spirit, Raava, explains that she is the spirit of light and peace, and that the spirit Wan had inadvertently freed is Vaatu, the spirit of darkness and war; Wan has inadvertently initiated an age of darkness for the world.
