The Dynamic Interaction of Perfume Oils and Skin Chemistry
The chemistry of our skin has a fascinating connection with perfume oils. Finding a fragrance, you like is less important than knowing how that fragrance changes in response to the particular chemistry of your skin.
Understanding Skin Chemistry:
Our skin has a natural pH balance with a composite of oil, sweat, and bacteria.
These factors vary from person to person, making each individual's skin chemistry distinct.
Skin chemistry can be influenced by factors like diet, hormones, medication, and even stress levels.
The Role of Perfume Oils:
Perfume oils are concentrated blends of aromatic compounds, carrier oils, and sometimes alcohol.
When applied to the skin, these oils interact with the body's natural chemistry, creating a personalized scent experience.
Unlike alcohol-based perfumes, which evaporate quickly, perfume oils have a longer-lasting presence on the skin, allowing for a more gradual development of the fragrance.
Tumblr media
Upon application, perfume oils undergo a process known as "fragrance development."
Initially, the top notes of the fragrance are most prominent, providing the first impression of the scent. These notes tend to be lighter and more volatile.
As time passes, the heart notes emerge, adding complexity and depth to the fragrance.
Finally, the base notes, which are often rich and earthy, become more pronounced, lingering on the skin for hours.
The Influence of Skin Chemistry:
Skin chemistry can significantly alter the way perfume oils unfold on the skin.
The acidity level of the skin can affect the way certain fragrance notes are perceived. For example, citrus notes may appear brighter on acidic skin, while floral notes may be more subdued.
The natural oils present on the skin can also interact with the components of the perfume oil, amplifying or muting certain aspects of the fragrance.
Additionally, individual body temperature and moisture levels can impact the diffusion of the scent, creating a unique olfactory experience for each person.
Tips for Maximizing Perfume Oil Performance:
Hydrate your skin: Well-moisturized skin tends to hold fragrance better and can enhance the longevity of perfume oils.
Apply to pulse points: The warmth of pulse points such as the wrists, neck, and behind the ears can help activate and diffuse the scent.
Experiment with layering: Try combining different perfume oils to create custom blends that complement your skin chemistry.
Consider seasonal variations: Fragrances may behave differently in hot and cold weather, so adjust your perfume oil choices accordingly.
Take note of reactions: Pay attention to how your skin reacts to different fragrance ingredients to avoid any potential sensitivities or allergies.
The Intriguing Chemistry Behind Perfume Oils and Skin
The sensory experience provided by perfume oils has a complex connection to the chemistry of our skin. We can gain a whole new perspective on the complexity and uniqueness of fragrance by knowing the way these scents interact with the body.
Accept the subtleties of your skin's chemistry and allow perfume oils to represent your distinct sense of smell. As you set out on this aromatic journey, take some time to peruse Aafiya Perfumes' wonderful selection.
“ The luxury-orientated brand Aafiya Perfumes offers fragrance and artistry that are fused. ”

one of the many things I used to know but couldn't remember: The Birch reduction is an organic reaction that is used to convert arenes to 1,4-Cyclohexadiene. The reaction is named after the Australian chemist Arthur Birch and involves the organic reduction of aromatic rings in an amine solvent (traditionally liquid ammonia) with an alkali metal (traditionally sodium) and a proton source (traditionally an alcohol). Unlike catalytic hydrogenation, Birch reduction does not reduce the aromatic ring all the way to a cyclohexane. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birch_reduction

Aromatic compounds: A ring made up solely of metal atoms
The term aromaticity is a basic, long-standing concept in chemistry that is well established for ring-shaped carbon compounds. Aromatic rings consisting solely of metal atoms were, however, heretofore unknown. The research team led by Prof. Dr. Lutz Greb, a scientist at Heidelberg University's Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, recently succeeded in isolating such a metal ring and describe it in full in an article published in the journal Nature Chemistry. Aromatic compounds, or aromatics, are a substance class in organic chemistry, named after the aromatic smell by which the initially discovered compounds of this class were identified. In addition to ring-shaped carbon compounds, aromatic metal complexes are also known, whereby the metal atom is bound to an aromatic organic molecule.

"During an archaeological dig in a desert area north of Jerusalem 40 years ago, a seed was discovered which was determined to be in pristine condition but had obviously seen many a year.
Now, despite falling from its parent 1,000 years ago, it has grown into a mature tree, and botanists examining it believe it may be an extinct species that was used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years—even receiving a nod in the Bible.
Neither Israeli botanists, nor Dr. Sarah Sallon, a physician who founded the Louis L. Borick Natural Medicine Research Center at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem, could determine what species it was from simply from the seed covering. So they did what nature intended—they planted it.
Using a well-documented technique that saw 2,000-year-old date palm fruit pits germinate, Dr. Sallon soaked the seed in hormones, liquid fertilizer, and water, and then planted it in a pot of sterile seed; then waited.
Despite its genetic code being exposed to environmental stressors for over 1,000 years, the seed sprouted after 5 weeks. The shoot was protected by a caplike feature called an operculum. As the shoot grew, the operculum was shed—leaving something for the team to radiocarbon date. It narrowed down the age of the almost 10-centuries-old seed to between the years 993 an 1202.
Fast forward 14 years and the plant has become a 10-foot-tall tree. Dr. Sallon shared images of the tree, its bark, and its leaves with botanists around the world. One expert suggested it belonged to the genus Commiphora, found across the Arabian Peninsula and parts of Africa. A genetic analysis subsequently revealed this was the case, but a perfect match was lacking.
Tumblr media
Pictured: The tree, now 14 years old.
Dr. Sallon and her team thought it was an extinct species known from history as Judean Balsam, but the best way to confirm that suspicion would be to have some aromatic traces similar to the resins of the myrrh tree to which it is related. However, no such fragrant compounds were detected.
Instead, the chemical analysis of the leaves identified a group of phytochemicals known as guggulterols which have been observed in a related species called Commiphora wightii that’s known to possess certain cancer-fighting properties in its resin.
A medicinal balm, the origin of which is not known, is mentioned in multiple historical texts including the Bible as ‘tsori,’ and rather than the fragrant Judean Balsam, it’s this tsori that Dr. Sallon and her team believe they have found.
They must wait until the tree, now 14 years old, produces flower or fruit to know for sure if it’s an extinct species, and if so, how to perhaps keep it alive.
Dr. Louise Colville, senior research leader in seed and stress biology at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London who wasn’t involved in the research, told CNN that it was a major accomplishment to grow a seed that old and possibly lead to a resurrection of this Biblical botanical.
“What’s surprising in this story is it was just a single seed and to be able to have one chance for that to germinate is extremely lucky,” she said.
“Working in a seed bank, seeing the potential for that extreme longevity gives us hope that banking and storing seeds that some at least will survive for very long periods of time.”"
-via Good News Network, October 8, 2024
--
Note: This is such a good demonstration of why seed banks are so important!! They give us such real and massive hope for deextinction and the revival of endangered species.

The medieval theory of Miasma makes a lot more sense when you realize that a ton of medicinal plants are strongly aromatic
Most plants smell mostly like generic vegetable smell so it's always striking when you come across one that has A Smell. And strangely those plants often contain compounds with effects on other organisms
For example pawpaw leaves smell extremely bitter, the leaves are also insecticidal (so you can put them as mulch to repel pests I think) Black walnut is well known to be allelopathic (toxic to some other plants that grow around it) and the leaves also have a strong smell
A lot of toxic plants also smell—poison hemlock has such a terrible reek when it is in bloom, you can smell a breeze that has blown over poison hemlock

Food Myth: Roast your spices before using to 'Release the Flavor'
Truth: Dry Roasting your spices will CHANGE their flavor.
A raw sesame seed tastes different than a roasted sesame seed, just like a raw onion tastes different than a roasted or caramelized one.
There's chemical reactions happening in there. Aromatics aren't just released to be used, they're also broken down into OTHER flavor compounds.
Indian cooking exemplifies this: recipes will have WHOLE RAW spices, GROUND RAW spices, and ROASTED WHOLE spices. The same seed may be used in the recipe in 3 different states, and this is important because each different state will give your mouth a different interaction.
For example: Coriander (cilantro seed)
Raw coriander is floral and lemony. The roasted version is grassy and earthy - it's a totally different flavor!
A ground-up version will infuse the whole dish with an even flavor.
Leaving the seeds whole will impart the dish with some flavor and you get little bursts of intense flavor when your teeth crush a seed. Whether that's a burst of earthy or floral/lemony depends on if you roasted it or not.
Don't roast pre-powdered spices, because they burn easily and break down too fast.
BUT! You can Roast a seed first, and THEN grind it!

The polluted water leaching from four massive open-pit coal mines in southern B.C.’s Elk Valley is well documented — fish-killing selenium, sulphates and nitrates that travel downstream into international watersheds along the U.S. border. Add to those boundary-hopping hazards one more contaminant that is airborne. An Alberta study recently published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters highlights the transport of toxic coal dust downwind over the Rocky Mountains into southern Alberta’s watersheds and communities. The study, conducted by researchers with the Alberta government and University of Alberta, sampled blackened snowpacks three kilometres to 60 kilometres downwind of Teck Resources’ mine sites over two winter periods in 2022 and 2023. After melting the dirty snow and assessing its chemical composition, they found vast quantities of polycyclic aromatic compounds, or PACs, a toxic class of organic contaminants.

let me- ethan landry
an: i am absolutely FERAL for this man atm...😨i just had to write something abt him..
summary: you have been super stressed about exams lately and ethan knows the best way to make you feel better. (also this is DEFINITELY more soft ethan??) but i like that.. lol
warnings⚠ SMUT (16+), oral (f receiving), strong language
Hell on earth was organic chemistry.
Your absolute fucktard of a professor had scheduled your exam on the same day as two of your other exams. This man had it out for you.
You massaged your temple as you drummed your pencil on your notes. Your brain wasn't functioning anymore. You had been sitting at this godforsaken desk for three hours now. You needed a break.
You forced yourself out of your chair and faceplanted on your bed next to your boyfriend in defeat. You sighed into the mattress and tried to gather your thoughts.
"Something bothering you baby?" your boyfriend laughed as he rubbed small circles into your back, clearly amused by your frustration with trying to memorize aromatic compounds.
"I can't do this anymore E, "I'm actually so exhausted."
"I wish someone would just kill the stupid bastard." you groaned into your palms.
Ethan gulped and immediately froze in his movements and you weren't sure why. But then he was comforting you again like nothing had happened.
"I'm sorry baby. If it makes you feel better, I just failed my last exam."
You laughed as he pulled you closer, the grasp of his arms melting away your stress.
"Honestly, I don't know if anything could make me feel better at this point.”
“Unless you can teach me the structure of carboxylic acid." you said with your hands on his chest staring into his dark eyes.
His chest shook with laughter and it was music to your ears. Ethan was so comforting and even being in his arms took you to a place far away from your worries.
"Definitely can't do that, but I think I can take your mind off it for a little while." he murmured into your lips.
"Oh yeah? How's that?"
"Well it usually starts with my head between your legs” he says in a low whisper.
You immediately feel your cheeks flush with warmth and squeeze your legs together.
You completely froze and waited for him to finish his sentence.
“ ..And ends with you screaming my name or something like that." he says with a devilish smirk.
He grins like a lovesick bastard at your embarrassment and tilts his head down to connect his lips to yours. He smiles into the kiss and you can feel your pulse weakening at the way his tongue explores your mouth.
His lips travel down your neck and you know exactly where he's going. You pull him off of you and look him in straight in his hazy brown eyes.
You and Ethan had been together for a little over a year now and you had been intimate more times than you could even begin to remember. You still got nervous before he went down on you and you just couldn't help but feel insecure sometimes, but Ethan always made you forget about all of it when he touched you.
"E, are you sure? You really don’t have to, I-”
He immediately stops you with a confused expression on his face.
“Baby are you kidding? I live for this shit.”
“I should probably get back to studying E, I just-"
He cut you off again, this time taking your head into his hand and made sure you met his gaze.
"Fuck studying. Let me make you feel good babe."
His thumb gently brushed over your cheek as he searched your eyes for an answer.
"Ok, fine." you said softly with a shy smile on your face.
"That's my girl." he said with a grin spreading over his face as he placed the softest kiss on your lips.
His fingers danced their way over your ribs under your shirt and his lips were placing gentle kisses on your hipbones. His fingers made their way down to the waistband of your shorts and his eyes quickly glanced up to yours asking for consent. You quickly nodded your head, becoming more and more eager for him to touch you by the second.
He pulled down your shorts gently and tossed them behind him. He hooked his fingers under your lace panties and pulled them down painfully slow. Once they were off, he grabbed both of your legs and put them over his shoulders. He wrapped his arms around your legs and pulled them open.
He looked up at you through lustful eyes while licking his lips.
"I got you. Always." he said in a low whisper placing a kiss on your inner thigh.
You brushed a gentle hand over his curls and offered a weak smile to him. You could feel your anticipation for his touch becoming stronger and your legs were shaking before he even touched you.
You could feel his breath on you and you couldn't take it anymore. You wrapped your fingers in his curls and guided him onto you.
He licked up your slit as you sucked in a shaky breath. Your thighs immediately clenched around him, but his strong hands pulled your legs right back open. His tongue started to circle around your clit and your fingers were already tugging on his curls. He groaned into you and the vibration had you letting out a choked moan.
"Right there E." you gasped.
He looked up at your face contorted in pleasure and started to grind his hips onto to the bed. Ethan was the kind of boyfriend who genuinely could get off from pleasuring you and have absolutely no shame about it.
He was lost in the taste of you and you were lost in his touch. You couldn't even remember what you were stressed about in the first place. Your mind was consumed by the feeling of his tongue sloppily tasting you and swirling around your clit, the tight grip of his fingers prying open your thighs, his dark eyes peering up at you through hooded lids occasionally rolling back into his head every time you moaned his name.
His hand slid carefully down your thigh as he slipped his middle finger into you, pumping in and out at a deliciously slow pace.
Your fingers tugged harder on his curls and he practically moaned into you.
"F-feels so good E, you're so good" you whined.
"I know baby I know, I'm gonna get you there I promise." he murmured into you, pressing wet kisses on your clit.
His words made you toss your head back and your back arch off the bed.
He slipped another finger into you, pumping a little faster this time.
Your fingers loosened from Ethan's hair and slid down his bare shoulders. His fingers started to curl inside you, purposefully hitting the spot he knew would send you over the edge. You moaned loudly and your nails dug into his back.
He groaned into you so loudly it almost caught you off guard. If you hadn't known better, you would have thought you hurt him. But you knew better by now. His sounds sent you even closer to the edge.
"Come on babe, let go for me." he breathed into you.
You could feel yourself impossibly close to your high with Ethan's gaze trained on your face. The second Ethan's nose rubbed your clit you were done for.
All you could do was moan his name over and over again, your nails digging into his back sure to leave marks. He fucked you all the way through your high until you were practically dragging him off of you.
You put your hand on the back of his neck and guided him toward your lips. God, he was so beautiful, even with the taste of you glimmering all over his features. You pulled him down into a breathless kiss and brought him closer by draping your leg over his waist.
He drew back and cupped your jaw looking down at you.
"I really hope you're not thinking about studying anymore tonight, because all I want to do-"
"Shut up and kiss me Landry."

About 30 years ago, an American botanist dug into the mud of a dried-up lake in China and found 1,000-year-old lotus seeds. She studied them carefully and put them in a pot on her lab's windowsill. They sprouted a few weeks later. "That took no effort. I thought that if she could do it, so can we," says Dr. Sarah Sallon, a pediatrician at Hadassah Medical Center, where she founded the Natural Medicine Research Center 25 years ago. The lotus that flowered on that windowsill in the United States sent Sallon on a years-long journey of raising date palms based on 2,000-year-old seeds. She even ate the fruit and then carried on with her botanical detective thriller.
At the end of her quest she proposed a solution to intriguing historical questions: What are the biblical plants tsori and afarsimon? What links them? And where did they disappear to?
....The fact that the Commiphora that sprouted [from their 1,000-year-old seed] resembled varieties found in Madagascar, not far from Sheba, adds to the hope that maybe the small plant is the legendary afarsimon that vanished from history in the eighth century. But alas, the plant at Kibbutz Ketura produced no aroma.
"We waited several years hoping that as it grew it might become fragrant. And we also sent specimens to chemists at the University of Western Australia and the University of Strasbourg in France," Sallon says. "What they found were almost no compounds associated with fragrance but many very medicinal ones including those with anti-inflammatory compounds."
Sallon, therefore, has a few key questions about the afarsimon. How is it that a plant that thrived for 1,000 years on large farms at the Dead Sea vanished without a trace? How is it that no archaeological excavation in the region, from Qumran in the north to Masada in the south, has found any afarsimon seeds?
....Cautiously, Sallon proposed a hypothesis for all the mysteries. She believes that the plant she found is a Commiphora that grew naturally at the Dead Sea, and that it may be the healing tsori mentioned in the Bible and known since the time of the Patriarchs.... [and that] ancient farmers used it as the stock for the aromatic Commiphora – the legendary afarsimon. This grafting gave Judean farmers the ability to grow large afarsimon fields and become a perfume powerhouse. This solution solves all the mysteries: Grafted plants often don't bear seeds, so no afarsimon seeds have been found at archaeological digs.
This is so cool. I can't believe people are sprouting seeds from archaeological digs and bringing extinct species back to life to learn about!
And it's so appropriate that it's two of the oldest cultures in the world that are doing this. I can't wait to see what else people will sprout!
