AGI, or "American Game Information" is a rating system comparable to the Pan-European "PEGI" system. Like PEGI, the AGI ratings state whether a video game is most appropriate for audiences of ages 3, 7, 12, 16, or 18.

An AGI 3 rating means a game is appropriate for all audiences old enough to play it, and examples include Tetris, Mario, and Splatterhouse 3: Chainsaw Gutsfuck Galore (known commonly as Kirby).

An AGI 18 rating means the game has much adult content like gore or sexuality, and includes games like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat. Games may also earn an AGI 18 rating by containing blasphemy, but this has only ever been enacted once for the game "Hotline Bethlehem 2: Herod's Revenge."

my friend recently forced me to watch the lord of the rings for the first time and dear goodness how have i lived for eighteen years without knowing anything about this masterpiece and also i have THOUGHTS because it might have changed my entire worldview

I’m going to compare artificial intelligence to wizards as an example to explain this. please bear with me as i try to rationalise that connection

the people who use AI maliciously (I’m talking stealing from artists, ruining human jobs, prioritising profit and such) tend to use the justification that to reject AI is to reject new technology. And, yeah, that’s not a great argument. But I find it hard to argue with because I love new technology, I love embracing change.

I initially had a similar problem with lotr: Saruman claims that we have to embrace the future, which means siding with Sauron. Now that’s obviously bad bc, yknow, sauron’s the bad guy. and the protagonists just want to live in hobbiton where nothing changes and tradition is valued.

so why did Tolkien write this? is the moral of the story that it’s foolish to embrace modernity, and instead we should embrace tradition? because i’m not gonna like that. kinda sounds like the backbone of conservative thinking

but uh no i don’t think that’s it at all

turns out that this, just like literally anything else, actually requires a bit more nuance than that.

tolkien fought in ww1 and it makes sense that he was opposed to a noisy chaotic future threatening to approach. and i think that’s the first step towards thinking about this a better way. to me, mordor doesn’t quite represent the future; i think it represents everything wrong with the world that makes the future scary.

circling back to AI: i think AI is like the wizards. there’s nothing inherently evil about them. they’re supposed to be good. how can you not love gandalf! but sauron lets us down under mordor, just as AI lets us down under capitalism.

the reason this point is so important to me is that it requires a shift in thinking from “embrace everything that’s new” to “it’s ok to be scared of the future” without rejecting a progressive mindset. because the future is terrifying. and honestly, i would love to be a lil hobbit who drinks tea in a place where nothing ever changes
