ArchLabs 2018.03 - See What's New

ArchLabs 2018.03 is the latest release of Linux distribution based on Arch Linux and featuring the Openbox window manager as the primary desktop interface. The project's latest release, ArchLabs 2018.03, brings a few fixes and improvements and improve the user. 

LUKS and encryption is now working, for those security concious users out there you should be all go on the encryption side. There have been a few installer updates, base-devel is included at install time. Also the mirrorlist is optimised at the same time.

Once you select the “Install ArchLabs” section of the installer, you will find it now is mostly automated. With the exception of setting passwords, username and hostname. You will also still need to manually set where grub is to be installed. When the base system is setup it automatically dumps you in the configuration menu, so take care you don’t miss this step.

Response to Chirag’s talk on pointclouds

Owner and Director of Archlab, Chirag Jindal spoke to us about his company and their use with now technology. His company uses similar laser scanners to what I work with currently so learning about this technology wasn’t new to me. I understand how the 3d scanning is revolutionising BIM in the industry and that its precise point clouds are helping scientists map climate change. Because I work with point clouds every day I understand the exact preciseness that is developed through the point cloud. I also understand the limitations (mapping by a line of sight) imposed on the technology. Because of this,  I have always looked at point clouds and a very practical means of working and how it is necessary to use, nothing ‘romantic’ about the design. It is simply a tool. 

Chirag’s work: ‘Underworld: The architecture of katabasis”  made I look at point cloud in a different light. Rather than looking at a point cloud as a tool and the laser scanner as something that simply captures a space- Chirag was looking at the point cloud as if it was a work of art. He had coloured the points and sectioned them beautifully so that the point cloud became not just an important tool, but it also glorified the outcome of the technology. 

I understand that point clouds are becoming more and more accessible as technology advances- colour lasers are now only taking just over a minute to produce. I believe that point cloud surveying in the way of the future and that even though it is used just as a tool- we can learn to respect and admire the work that it creates- like Chirag.
