Title:
Unprofessional
Pros:
It's fine if you need to build a portfolio, and they will take you with very little experience, education or other forms of demonstrable expertise — BUT you need to be careful not to provide them with ANY personal information or payments without ensuring there is appropriate professional oversight (I didn't actually have to provide them with either my full name, just a publication name, nor pay the 10 EUR onboarding contribution fee they ask for in interviews — and I know others who haven't either, but it seems to depend on whom you deal with, and how good you are at politely but assertively letting them know that you would be 'very happy' to do something they've asked for 'as soon as' they send you over the appropriate company invoice/direct you to a certified identity verifier/transcript exchange system/etc.!).
Cons:
It's all incredibly unprofessional, so what sort of portfolio you can build out of it will depend entirely on your own approach, abilities and unfortunately also your luck in being assigned others to work directly with (I was actually really lucky, so never dealt with this, but I've been told by a number of colleagues that they were paired with writers, editors or illustrators who were not yet at the level of English, Arcadia's chief language of publication, that would have been needed to understand, let alone contribute to, the articles; who did not respond to texts or emails either at all or in time during contracted work hours etc.)!
The upper management — especially Doğukan Ejder, the Chief Executive Officer who is somehow also the publication's Chief Academic Officer (all despite having nothing more than an undergraduate degree from a fee-paying university with a profusion of grammatical errors already on its front page; some additional fee-paying summer courses completed at more reputable universities; and experience at publications just like this one, where he wrote in the same error-ridden, impoverished English peppered with overly ornate adjectives and adjectives in an ineffective attempt to distract us all) — is simply incompetent; insufficiently educated or experienced to take on the roles they've set themselves but also hostile to the idea of delegating them or seeking outside opinion; and prone to approaching their colleagues across more creative departments, such as writing, editing and illustration, with extreme entitlement to their time and abilities outside of contracted work hours. Doğukan Ejder is an especially obvious example of the unprofessionalism at the core of the institution, even going so far as to terminate colleagues on the spot after they expressed criticism, reluctance to publish or keep in publication contributions full of errors, or simply disinterest or inability to respond to him immediately outside of work hours — and, because of his positions in the institution, he sets the tone for the rest of management.
Advice to Management:
Firstly, get properly accredited and begin to operate as an accredited non-profit institution which claims it is based in Geneva, Switzerland, ought to — by declaring a company headquarters and not simply a postbox, applying for charitable status, meeting the demands of public oversight for that charitable status to take effect and hold, paying taxes, holding accounts in the company's name, issuing invoices and payslips in the company's name, paying accredited institutions for secure identity checks, transcript verifications etc. Second, treat management as a legitimate profession in its own right, which is to manage to find the right people, entice them to work for the institution, put them into positions where they're able to do so without being impeded by management, and actually compensate people, at a decent rate and on time, for their services to the institution.

Why I don't like Trollhunters Rise of the titans
there is no worse hater than an ex-fan
1.Jim was spoiled as a character: I have to say right away that I don't like that at the end of "Wizards" Jim becomes a human again. Because it devalues all the drama that was in "Troll Hunters." At the end of the third season, they kept telling us that it was forever, that there was no cure for it and NOW HE'S HUMAN AGAIN! Therefore, you can safely throw in the trash that sentimental scene on the roof in the 11th series, as well as that scene in the bathtub from the 10th series. In the end, it was thanks to this sacrifice of Jim that I felt that the victory was given to the main characters for a reason, that they had to sacrifice a lot for this.
And after Jim returned from the other world, he began to really piss me off with his constant whining: "Well, what kind of troll hunter am I without an amulet?". Seriously, almost all the dialogues with Jim come down to this whining about "how can I save everyone without an amulet?". Everyone has already cited that legendary 11th episode of the second season as an example, so in order not to repeat myself, I decided to recall the episode with Merlin's Tomb, where Jim himself broke the amulet, and then without this amulet he fought against Gunmar and Angor AND HE DID NOT WHINE AFTER the DEFEAT: "But if I had an amulet, then I could protect everyone, but without an amulet I can't."
And if you think about it from this point of view, it turns out that throughout the movie he was right when he said that he couldn't do anything without the amulet, because in the finale he wins only because he has magic armor with the power of the amulet again, and without them he wouldn't even be able to scratch the Belrog. Indeed, it is very funny that throughout the film the creators are trying to convey to us the idea that even without the amulet Jim is still a hunter, at the same time showing in the finale that without the amulet he is not capable of much. And yes, I think that in the final he had to defeat Belrog WITHOUT an AMULET together with Toby (and that gun blocking magic).
And so in the movie, for me, Jim turned into an empty place, who is nobody without his armor, and if he is nobody without his armor, then he is not worthy of them. (Who found out where this quote came from?)))
Who else was bothered by the moment when Jim looked directly into the camera and seemed to be addressing the viewer? (Because it bothered me)
Tumblr media
2.Characters: Only two characters have at least some development (Toby and Jim), the rest have turned into furniture. The conflict between Aja and Jim (when she suggested simply evacuating the Earth) eventually led to nothing, because Aja, for some reason, decided to support Jim's idea to rewind time. And this is strange because all her friends survived at the end of the film (she accepted the death of her parents back in 3below), and at the end of the film she had children (who, if something goes wrong, may not appear in an alternate universe).
After watching the movie, I was finally convinced that Varvatos had to die at the end of 3below (he so often talked about "glorious death". Death, as for me, would be the logical conclusion of his arch), if you replace him with a Zadra in the film, nothing will change (it even seems funny to me that Varvatos is not even on the poster for the film)
Blinky and Aaarrg in this movie, too, in fact, do not need any important role they do not play (the ninth configuration does not count). They didn't do anything significant during the whole. And why did everyone suddenly forget that Blinky is the new head of the troll market, why does he have time to fight titans when he needs to be engaged in the restoration and management of a new troll market?
The situation with Barbara is no better, in the plot she is needed only to tell Juma about his father (whom Jim didn't care about, he said it himself) in the future, information about Jim's father is not needed for the plot. why was this stuffing of information?
There are also some understatements with Claire's powers. At the beginning of the film, she gets tired after using a couple of small portals, and at the end she transfers a huge titan to the other side of the world and after that she still has the strength to fight with Belrog. (And if Claire is weaker than Morgana, it turns out that Morgana is also capable of opening such huge portals. Why then couldn't Morgana just use the portal to transfer a huge stone and drop it like a meteorite on Camelot or on the army at Kilahed?)
3.Senseless deaths: I'm talking about the death of Strickler and Nomura. This does not move the plot, does not reveal other characters, they are only needed to remove Strickler and Nomura from the plot. And if Barbara and Jim mourn Strickler's death (2 minutes) It's like everyone forgot about Nomura. It's strange that Jim doesn't even think about her, although in trollhunters she saved your life twice, challenged Gunmar and was ready to sacrifice herself for you, Jim, you would at least pretend that you don't care.
Tumblr media
By the way, about the characters who were thrown out of the plot...Let's talk about Steve. You can forget that once it was a character with its own drama and interesting development, now he's just a joke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if you still remember this moment (This movie took away everything that was dear to me)
Tumblr media
4.Lack of epicness: The film positions itself as an epic conclusion to the trilogy, but for me it is not.
The fact is that earlier in the finale, whole armies, and sometimes a whole fleet, opposed the villain, in the finale, troll hunters, for example, not only the main characters, but also other troll tribes and even several residents of Arcadia opposed Gunmar. In the finale of 3below, an entire fleet of Akkerion and an army of bounty hunters fought against Morando (by the way, what prevented the heros from sending several spaceships through the portal and using them to try to kill the titan?)
In the final , only 10 characters tried to stop Belrog. In the film, the stakes were also lowered, if in 3 below Morando, having received the power of god, could, according to the characters, destroy entire systems, then in rotta three titans could recreate only one planet (it turns out that Morando is stronger than all the members of the secret order).
5.Unnecessary scenes: The scene where Blinky briefly retells the plot of three animated series and the scene at the police station can simply be removed and nothing will change. Their function is to bring up to date those who have not watched the previous parts. But the Tales of Arcadia are too big a story to cram it into a short retelling in 5 minutes.
6.Transfer of the amulet: It's just genius to save Toby from death in order to doom him to a more painful death in the end. And Jim apparently forgot Unkar's sad experience because otherwise I can't understand why he didn't hesitate to make Toby a new hunter (And if Jim thinks that Toby is more worthy of the amulet, then why, when the two of them found the amulet in the first series, did the amulet initially choose Jim and not Toby?). And yes, as for me, Jim is more worthy of wearing an amulet than Toby, because even before becoming a hunter, Jim had those necessary qualities of a real hero. If we recall the situation when Steve bullied Eli, only Jim decided to stand up for a classmate, while Toby just wanted to pass by.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For me, this act of Jim is perceived simply as shifting responsibility to another person.
7. Quibbles: It seems to me that at the beginning of the film, all the characters became very stupid. Why, when everyone was discussing who to send to the Titans, no one said that sending a shadow mage to a place where shadow magic doesn't work is stupid? It was also very stupid to send Strickler to a place where his wings freeze, like sending Aaarrrgh and Nomura to Titan, which is under the sun.
The only plus of the film for me without any "buts" is the graphics, otherwise from the beginning to the end it was a complete disappointment.

The Rose in the Shadows by Arcadia Rayne
Tumblr media
In honor of seeing @arcadiarayne at @boujeebookstore for their fantasy author event last night, I figured I'd post my review of The Rose in the Shadows!
Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary ✨️👀😭💔 Read: July 2021 SPOILERS
This book starts with a bang! The main character has no memories of who she is or where she is, and she just shows up on the steps of the Athenian Palace. Because she doesn't know what's going on and she's scared, magic comes out of her to protect herself. The catch? She's the descendant of Hyrax, the God of death, and that line supposedly died out years ago. The rest of the story is about her exploring her magic and trying to regain her memories.
The main character chooses the name Thea because it's a name she hears when the nurses take care of her once she kind of burns through her magic at the beginning. This is definitely a “enemies” to lovers slow burn. I put enemies in quotes because it's hard to truly hate someone if you don't even know who you are!
Prince Clayton Vail sees Thea as an opportunity to boost his kingdom and have a full court of God descendant, but he is heavily influenced by his father, the king. This is the worst king in all the fantasy books I've read. He is highly manipulative (as many of them are), but he takes it to the next level. He is physically, emotionally, and verbally abusive and is used to getting his way. Thea has none of it, but is punished for disrespecting the king publicly. I won't go into detail here, but... it's not great.
On a happier note, I love the friendships Thea makes in this book. I can imagine it's hard for her to trust people and for them to trust her when no one even knows who she truly is. I'm excited about the prequel about all her friends! I hate that one of them dies, and another ends up evil! Her closest friend was in love with the one who died, and they never got their happily ever after 😭
I'm excited to see what Arcadia does in the next book with Thea and Clayton's connection, both romantically and through magical abilities.

American Arcadia is Biting Social Satire | Video Game Review
Now and then comes a narrative game that will glue me to the screen. 2023 has been excellent at offering me those, and all of them different experiences: from the survival narrative of The Pale Beyond to the fantastic saga of Baldur’s Gate 3 to the metanarrative mind-bending horror of Alan Wake 2, I’ve played through more unforgettable narrative experiences in the last half year than across the…

"Brideshead Revisited" by Evelyn Waugh
Selenio
“O God, make me good, but not yet.”
(⚜️ 7 / 10)
Tumblr media
The roaring 20’s.
In our mind, this decade trapped in between two world wars is characterized by its flamboyancy, self-indulgence, and unrestraint. Led by a generation that had not been quite old enough to fight in World War I (yet had been mature enough to understand all the tragedy and loss caused by it) and which was already sensing the impending doom of another World War, the ’20s, in reality, were a time of massive change and uncertainty. While women did win a lot, the fall was soon to come and nothing seemed constant.
Many tried to dance and drink away the fear and horror of the financial crisis and also other more personal issues. Evelyn Waugh’s novel “Brideshead Revisited” and especially his character Sebastian Flyte beautifully encapsulate this ‘Zeitgeist’ and paint the portrait of a society on the brink of madness.
Having read “Vile Bodies” a couple of years ago and having fallen utterly in love with it, I finally decided to pick up another one of Evelyn Waugh’s works and was - yet again - far from disappointed with his flowery imagery yet satirically melancholic and tragically funny storytelling.
“Brideshead Revisited: The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder”, written by Evelyn Waugh was first published in 1945 - precisely the year in which the Second World War ended. As the title would suggest, it is displayed as the memoir of Charles Ryder, specifically focusing on his friendship with the Flyte family. Apparently, Waugh himself entitled the novel as his “magnum opus” multiple times - an opinion to which he would not stay loyal, however.
⚜️ Characters (1.7/2)
The characters are described through the eyes of the narrator, Charles Ryder, and subsequently one has to look through the veil of British modesty to decipher some of their true feelings and motives.
To my greatest dismay, Sebastian Flyte (the character I was most interested in, after having learned he was modeled after Stephen Tennant, the same friend of Waugh’s who also was the inspiration for Miles in “Vile Bodies”) steps into a sort of background role after the first act, not appearing anymore except as the subject of conversation.
In fact, I feel like both the author and narrator didn’t really know what to do with Sebastian but there is such tremendous depth in his character, already present in the scenes of the book that I'm willing to forgive them for now. I guess only Aloysius will ever really know the truth about him.
The relationships between the characters resemble those in a lot of books I have read from this decade. They are almost always unhappy in a way, looking for the kind of passion and romance even the searchers themselves oftentimes clearly lack but seem to expect from their surroundings. Not a single soul is ever upfront yet somehow expects everybody else to be and resents them for not meeting these expectations fully enough. Sometimes it is rather painful to read about these kinds of unhappy relationships, yet they sort of bring a sweet melancholy with them (since some feelings are sometimes better imagined than truly experienced) and are perfectly reminiscent of the times.
⚜️ Plot (0.5/2)
To be perfectly honest, when looking for a strong plot with multiple side plots and plot twists, one looks in vain in 1920s literature. I apologize profusely for the amount of "plots" in the last sentence.
Oftentimes, aesthetics and subtle character development are more important to the writers of this decade and this is no different in “Brideshead Revisited”.
It almost feels as if the reader himself is sucked into this crumbling world of British aristocracy and is experiencing the decay of personalities and architecture firsthand. Beautiful, for the lovers of slow, realistic, character-driven fiction but perhaps a bit boring for someone used to action novels and thrillers.
Nonetheless, the storyline is coherent and structured, with one action beautifully leading to the other. So as it might not add a lot to the novel overall, it also doesn’t take away from it.
⚜️ Writing Style (2/2)
Evelyn Waugh’s writing style is simply exceptional. There were numerous passages I had to reread simply due to their almost poem-like beauty.
There is something hauntingly majestic about the way he describes depressive states, anxiety, and melancholy. Even death takes on a new, satirically funny yet somehow also emotional note. I need to stop now before I embarrass myself by getting lost in praise over his choice of words.
⚜️ Aesthetic (1.8/2)
The main image of the novel is that of the decaying castle as an allegory for the crumbling of the British aristocracy during the first half of the 20th century. The stones and groundwork seem solid and unconquerable but it is being destroyed by the vines and plants woven into its very structure an onlooker would perhaps deem as beautiful and majestic. The windows are always closed, the interior hidden by heavy, beautifully adorned flowy curtains and there is always music in the air, so distant one can’t be sure if it’s coming from a radio or the quiet song of a lonely harp inside of the walls.
Even though war, travel, and infidelity are strong topics in “Brideshead Revisited”, there is a certain homely quality about the book altogether. While the Captain and so many of the Flyte children leave the estate at one point or another, it always stays this refuge that is holding the family together - for better or for worse.
Similarly, the way the book is written just fits into this image of resting in front of a fireplace, drinking black tea with milk while listening to the soft patter of the snowstorm against the window - or maybe I’m just biased because that was the way I enjoyed it a couple of months ago.
⚜️ Recommendation (1/2)
I would definitely not recommend this book to just anyone, simply because it can be quite long-winded and tiring at times. The flowery, lengthy writing style is also definitely something, a reader would first have to get used to, ideally by consuming other books in this style.
As a lover of “Jeeves and Wooster”, “Downton Abbey” and other media set in the England of the 1920s, I truly enjoyed this book and I think anyone with similar interests would too. If you aren’t afraid of long-winded passages, intersected by emotionally and aesthetically beautiful poetry and deep character relationships, by all means: go for it!
To my greatest shame, I purchased this book as an afterthought. It had been recommended to me a few times both on- and offline but in reality, I just wanted to “complete” my book order with some nice historical fiction and to finally indulge in more works by Evelyn Waugh. I then was the proud owner of this beautiful penguin edition that was glaring down at me from my bookshelf for a few months before I finally got around to reading it.
But just like this review (which I’m only posting now after it has been sitting in my drafts since winter) shows: good things take time.
It doesn't matter what people call you unless they call you pigeon pie and eat you up.

Arcadia Grey - Casually Crashing
A review.
Tumblr media
Casually Crashing is Chicago fifth wave emo band Arcadia Grey's sophomore album, released in 2024. The first thing I want to point out about this album is the incredible album art. I've been following Arcadia Grey since before the announcement of Casually Crashing - their first LP, Konami Code, is absolutely worth the listen- and when this album art was revealed, I was floored. I find it so beautiful.
Arcadia Grey cites a few influences for this album: Most notably, Prince Daddy & the Hyena, which is referenced in the song P Daddy Hoodie. Futher influences Nat Breeden, bassist and vocalist, references are PUP, Great Grandpa, The Hotelier, Weezer, Swordfish, and Oso Oso, among others.
According to Coraline Kunda, guitarist and vocalist, the album is meant to explore the idea of the transition from childhood to adulthood. I think it achieves this goal. Kevin Pickles &the Great Pool Noodle Excursion- a somewhat silly song about your roommate not doing the dishes- coins the album's name, with the lyric "We're casually crashing with all of our friends." I think this lyric summarizes the theme of the album very well, the ungraceful and messy transition with all your peers into adulthood. Cora herself said in an interview with FLOOD: "Watching the invisible veil of naïvety that blanketed over our friends and families slowly rot and decay into the harsh reality we reside [in]. All we are is to be casually crashing through life... Even though we are all crashing, we at the very least have each other."
Something I've always admired Arcadia Grey for, beyond their incredible performances (seriously, see them life, it's incredible), breathtaking vocals, and amazing members (I love you Cora and Nat) is their ability to balance silliness and seriousness in their songs. Looking through the album, nearly every song has somewhat of a silly title. Kevin Pickles & the Great Pool Noodle Excursion, The Rat Fortress, P Daddy Hoodie, all have ridiculous names.
For me personally, this album could not come out at a better time. My own transition from high school to moving out and college makes this album so relatable to me. They litter pop culture and video game references in their lyrics.: "I avoid you like the Noid," "Could I jump back on to FD / Or fly right off the screen." They also sample from shows like Bojack Horseman or Yu-Gi-Oh, adding to a more lighthearted vibe. These are juxtaposed their introspective, soul-crushingly realistic lyrics that they pull out of seemingly nowhere. The album makes you want to cry, to laugh, to dance, to punch a wall (or maybe your father).
I have two favorites from this album. First is Made 4 love, or maybe Made 4 Luv. I can't tell because Spotify refers to it as both depending on how I look at the song, which is so incredibly confusing. Either way, Made 4 Love is an incredible song about discovering your own self, outside of being in a relationship. Cora told of the inspiration of the song, being her realization in 2020 that she felt she had little to no identity outside of being a musician, and her journey to love herself and give herself value outside of what she can provide to the world.
My second favorite is Halley, the final track on the album. This one genuinely makes me emotional. It tells Cora's regret in not being able to come out to her grandfather before he passed away, and her religious guilt regarding growing up transgender. Heartbreakingly, she says this about the song: "'Halley' tries to express the importance of being truthful with those you love, because at the end of the day, all our time together is finite."

Title:
Lack or respect, volunteers treated as disposable material
Pros:
Some experience if you are devastated to gain some
Cons:
Bad culture, arrogant, disrespectful, bossy "CEO" [Doğukan Ejder], no actual HR policy and guidelines, no actual training, despite so declared in the job advertisement. Absolute abuse of the volunteers, who are considered totally disposable with limited rights and a serious list of obligations, amongst which them to financially refund the owner in case of withdrawal. Aggressive treatment, from the founder, aiming to belittle one's self value. Nothing but a "wannabe" academic "organisation" based on mere ego and conceit. Loss of time and energy.

Why I don't like 3below
For me, 3below is better than Wizards, because, firstly, they don't create so many plot holes, and secondly, their narrative is more measured (I know this is due to a large number of episodes, but still).
1. I still don't understand what the series is trying to become (independent work or continuation). Because if it's the first one, then show me the person who only looked at the 3 below and didn't ask questions like: WHO IS A TROLL HUNTER? WHAT THE HELL WAS GOING ON IN THE FIRST SEASON FINALE? WHERE DID ALL THESE MAGICAL CREATURES COME FROM? WHY DID JIM BECOME A TROLL IN EPISODE 12?
So, it turns out that for 3below is in the same universe with troll hunters, both good and bad. This is good, because at the time of the show's release, he already had a formed fan base, but this is bad, because basically these people were waiting for the continuation of the story of their favorite characters from "Troll Hunters".
2.The second problem for me personally is the villains. Let's start with the most important Morando, about which we know NOTHING. In the very first episode, he says he has returned from exile, but we are not told why he was exiled.
Yes, there have always been evil villains in the Tales of Arcadia, whose motivation was not particularly delved into, but if we compare with the same Gunmar (about whom we know how he was born, how he lost his eye, for what and by whom he was exiled to the dark lands), then Morando is literally a blank slate compared to him.
It's the same with minor villains. We also don't know anything about the Brotherhood of Zerons (for example: are they blood relatives or not), the detail that they respect each other and mourn the death of their comrades is, of course, cool, BUT THAT's IT! We don't know anything more about them.
They tried to uncover Thronos, but in the middle of the season he was quickly killed, and no one else remembered about him (even Aja, who kind of promised to help him with his dying planet).
Kubritz in the final began to contradict herself. Throughout the show, she said that she did not trust aliens, and in the finale she unconditionally obeyed Morando and did not even question his promises even after he openly began threatening the lives of earthlings whom she wanted to protect (I do not believe that such a drastic change in character occurred because of the weapons donated Morando)
3.Steve/Aya. I just don't understand why she suddenly began to like Steve, for example, in one episode she calls him an ordinary blockhead, in the next episode they are already going on a date, and in the finale of the first season he can't live without her (and let's not forget that in the same episode Steve quietly stared at Nomura. Which seems very strange to me, considering how strong their relationship is trying to show)
Tumblr media
And, by the way, it was with 3below that Steve began to get stupid and stopped being a character, becoming a walking joke, which led to the fact that in "Wizards" he frankly infuriates, and in the film.... you know yourself.
4.The inconsistencies (where without them) are much smaller this time than in Wizards, which is good news, but they still exist.
1)when did you guys have time to change?
Tumblr media
2)the scene with the refrigerator is completely different

Review: Tears in Time (Arcadia Trust Book 4) by Christian Baines
Rating: 5🌈 It’s a series that starts with The Beast Without, meeting vampire Reyland and werewolf lover, Jorgas. It’s an excellent book, scary and powerful. And with each story, new paranormal characters and convoluted elements are added and explored, like The Arcadia Trust and then the horrifying Wound. Tears in Time is the fourth book in this increasingly complex and scarily powerful…
