#Arc 12: Intermission

Well folks. I’m on my substitute teaching grind again this week! Scheduled each day up in hopes of getting some good writing done. I did on Monday! And then proceeded to finally start reading @ninemagicks Game/Set/Match yesterday and did that every bell so uhhhhhh. Today………..well ummmmm…..yeah today I worked on chapter graphics because I’m in big procrastination mode. I want to keep riding this wave of engagement (that sounds corporate gross) but I’m also very much in my head about delivering. I should probably channel this energy into writing the chapter since such pressure is Baz’s literal arc but uhhhhhhhh why do that when I could Simon avoid. I love being mentally well!

“Work In Progress Wednesday” right? That means I can talk about the progress of every part of the process? Huh? Yeah? Are you gonna stop me? TRY! TRY TO STOP ME!

Aggression aside, let’s get into it.

As previously stated on Sunday, we find ourselves at intermission. But that’s just the theatrical way of slicing up the story. The fun thing about 24 chapters (I got rid of my originally planned intermission chapter because I didn’t want to write it anymore) is that math really loves the number 24. It’s scrumptious. Yummily divisible. Ergo, IKABIKAM also has/is/will be deliciously divided. Afterall, I do keep saying I’m cooking on it.

Now, to put @alexalexinii on blast (sorry for perceiving you), they wrote in the tags of a Chapter 12 reblog: #made me realise that this fic had proper arcs? And I grinned. I cackled. I rubbed my grubby little hands together at the top of my tower as I’ve been doing this whole time because oh ARCS???????? YOU WANT ARCS???????????? I’VE GOT ARCS LYING IN WAIT LIKE YOU WOULDN’T BELIEVE. (I love overselling myself.)

Allow me to let you in on some of the building blocks thus far.

Chapters 1, 2, 3: a complicated reunion which is shaky but ultimately sets up

Chapters 4, 5, 6: developing the friendship which is a crucial foundation for

Chapters 7, 8, 9: the gay (Baz’s increasingly more external “hi i’m gay”, Simon’s internal “oh wait me too”) which then explodes into

Chapters 10, 11, 12: all that political parent stuff that’s been hinted at in passing which is BIG relevant and incredibly intertwined in this tangled up mess that leads into the work of….

You get it. They’re mini trilogies. Don’t ask me about dividing the chapters into groups of four because I didn’t have that in mind while writing. I like threes better. Always have. Absolute banger of a prime number.

Now, @cutestkilla keeps telling me I’m at the downward slope now but honestly delivering on what I’ve set up scares the shit out of me WAY more than the grunt work. I’m uhhhhh yeah. This is why I’m chronically unable to finish projects but by GOD I will finish this one. I swear by it.

okay 1 person wants the essay and that is enough for me.

so obviously all of the goes wrong productions are ensemble pieces. but i firmly believe that if you had to assign a main character to each goes wrong production, annie twilloil would be the main character of the play that goes wrong. why? because her story follows the basic outline of the hero's journey template. it's a simplified version, as this is a comedy show, and the development of characters is not a priority. but the framework is there, and that's what i'll go through with you today.

(disclaimer that this is mostly just a joke, so don't take this too seriously. i am also not a literary expert, so if anything here isn't correct, don't yell at me. feel free to explain anything to me nicely though.)

i am using christopher vogler's 12-step outline as my basis for this, as it is a more modern adaptation of the original 17-step outline, which suits this show better. not every single one of the steps is fulfilled properly, because as i said, annie's character arc isn't exactly a priority in the show, but also because this is usually an outline that portrays a fantasy hero going on a quest to achieve a huge feat and save the world. as this is quite different to anything in tptgw, it's never going to quite fit. as i said, this is all just for fun and is not meant to be perfect.

anyway, without more blabber, here is my interpretation of annie twilloil's story arc through the lens of the hero's journey.

the ordinary world

we are introduced to the hero's regular world. annie's ordinary world is the behind-the-scenes stage manager work. this is where she is comfortable, and she is not yet facing any challenges.

the call to adventure

the hero is called to action in some sort of way. this is obviously when sandra is knocked out and they need someone to fill in for florence. annie is asked to leave her state of normalcy and enter the unknown world (aka go on stage and act).

refusal of the call

the hero may refuse the call at first, which means they either need to be convinced or forced into taking action. annie, at first, is very reluctant to play florence. this means that she is thrust into action against her will.

meeting the mentor

the hero meets the figure who takes the role of the story's mentor. this stage is a little tricky, as there isn't any single character who stands out to me as annie's mentor. the mentor in this case could be all of the other members of cornley, as they are her "guides" through the unknown world. a more abstract mentor could be her script, as it acts like her lifeboat and literally guides her through the show.

crossing the first threshold

the point of no return, the hero finally leaves the ordinary world and enters the unknown world. annie is pushed onstage as florence, thus quite literally making her cross from backstage (ordinary world) to onstage (unknown world).

tests, allies and enemies

the hero faces obstacles, gains allies and faces enemies. while she doesn't really have any allies or enemies to deal with, annie certainly has to go through a lot of tests. this is all of the stuff that "goes wrong" — problems with lines, issues with the set, getting caught in a loop, all the general shenanigans we see in the show. this section is traditionally the longest in the story, which fits with this show, as the whole point is that there's lots of challenges to overcome.

approach to the inmost cave

the inmost cave represents a large challenge that has been looming on the horizon, and in this stage, the hero prepares for this. this is one of the stages that doesn't really apply to annie's arc, as unlike the classic hero, she isn't particularly on a quest to do something, and therefore isn't aware that she's about to face a challenge. if you wanted to make something into this stage, it'd probably be the intermission — she commits herself to playing florence and prepares herself for the rest of the show.

ordeal

this is where the hero faces their biggest challenge yet, which may be their greatest fear or their deadliest foe. for a while, i thought this was probably when annie gets knocked out (because that seems like a pretty big challenge and probably her lowest point) but she doesn't really overcome a challenge here (except for... regaining her consciousness?). it's not particularly something she has to face herself (the other characters are the ones who have to deal with it). instead, i've decided that the best candidate for annie's ordeal is when she drops her script and has to try to act alone. up to this point, she's been gaining confidence, but now she's faced with her worst fear — she doesn't know what to say anymore. she's left vulnerable. this is a challenge she actually has to face herself, and she struggles through without a script until finally she acquires another copy.

reward (seizing the sword)

the hero receives a reward as a result of their overcoming of the ordeal. this is another stage that isn't super clear, because in comedy shows, characters don't really get rewarded. in fact, most of the comedy in this show revolves around the characters suffering at the hands of their incompetence. so annie doesn't particularly receive any reward for facing the ordeal. however, i do think there's a slight element of this, as her efforts assure her that she can handle being an actor, and even being off-script. it renews her faith in herself — something that will assist her during the climax.

the road back

this is when the hero tries to return to the ordinary world — or in annie's case, this is where they attempt to simply finish the play. but the road back isn't necessarily easy, and there are more challenges (like how she is knocked out). this leads up to the final confrontation with the antagonist before the hero returns, and is the preparation for the final battle — the climax of the show.

resurrection

this is the final climax, with the hero's final and biggest challenge. it's the hero's final exam, where we see whether they learned anything from the ordeal. we see that the hero has changed from the beginning of the story — they complete their transformation that has been building since the very beginning. for annie, this is obviously her final fight with sandra, who is really the antagonist in annie's story. we see that her confidence has grown, and her experiences with the ordeal have given her enough faith in her own abilities to fight sandra for the role, even abandoning her script. and in the end, she triumphs — she ends up on stage with sandra tied up behind her.

return with the elixir

the hero returns to their ordinary world with some sort of prize (the elixir). despite having come to the end of their adventure, they have been fundamentally changed as a person. this is mostly unseen in tptgw, but we can assume it happens post-canon. annie returns to being a stage manager (for now. we know she becomes an actor for peter pan goes wrong, but i would assume that for the rest of the in-universe performances of murder at haversham manor, she continues being a stage manager). she returns to her "ordinary world" changed — she has grown as a person, faced dangers, and has become a "master of two realms". the "elixir" she brings with her is as metaphorical as her reward after the ordeal was, but she's gained new skills and confidence, and discovered that she has a taste for acting.

Things I liked about Chain of Thorns

I have a love hate relationship to this book. Like many people in the fandom, I wqs fairly disappointed. But there were also things I liked:

1. Matthew's alcoholicism recovery plotline

2. Grace and Christopher's dynamic

3. Cordelia and James. Need I say more?

4. The way Matthew was never written as legitimate competition (at least not to me)

5. Thomas and alastair

6. Will and Tessa being written as more present parents than they were in the prior two books (it never made sense to make them so absent)

7. Anna ceasing the womanizer shit (I think the progression was written unnaturally but I like that it happened)

8. Ariadne finding her way (pissed that she went back to Anna because what Anna did is unforgivable to me. Guess you can't have everything)

9. James healing arc from what grace did to him

10. Graces redemption arc

11. I liked seeing cordelia in Paris. It was undoubtedly a bad decision but she's spent so much time being a hero and putting others first so it was refreshing to see her prioritize herself and I think it improved her as a character. I think it was also a character development point for Matthew and one of the main reasons the merry thieves realised that all their secrets were harming themselves and each other

12. I like alastair becoming friends with the merry thieves (I do wish that they acknowledged that they also fucked up at times tho)

13. The descriptive writing and prose was as good as ever

14. I like that family relationships overall seemed more highlighted in this book

15. I likes the glimpses I saw of sonas healing arc (can we talk about the unmet potential between her and Risa? Cause that's a ship I'm down to board)

16. Tatiana was given larger scope as a character. This book showed her complexity and how fascinating she is as a villain more

17. The intermission grief chapter was written really well

18. The London falling plotline was interesting and the atmospheric writing was good. I dont think the fight scenes in the plotline (and in general) were written as well as in past books though

19. The love declarations were as good as ever. They even would endear me towards ariadne and Anna a few times before I remembered how I actually felt about them

20. I loved the epilogue for the most part, although I wish the group did something in their ceremony to directly honor Christopher. But I disagree with people in the fandom that are saying Christopher's death wasn't mourned. I do understand where they're coming from though

BERKELEY (AP) – Jaylon Tyson scored 23 of his career-high 30 points in the second half as the California men's basketball team erased a 20-point deficit to defeat Colorado 82-78 at Haas Pavilion. It was the Golden Bears' largest comeback victory since Feb. 14, 2009 when they trailed by 22 in the first half of an eventual 82-75 win over Stanford in Berkeley. On Wednesday, Cal (6-10, 2-3 Pac-12) trailed 40-20 with 2:09 remaining in the first half and by 14 at the intermission before taking its first lead, 63-62, on a Tyson dunk with 5:38 left in the contest.   "We are going to have many more wins that are impressive over skilled opponents. This is the start," Cal head coach Mark Madsen said. "I know we're going to hit a pothole or two, but I'll tell you this; we're going to fight, fight, fight every step of the way."   Colorado (11-5, 5-3) built a 14-point lead in the first half behind a 15-point effort by Eddie Lampkin Jr, and the Buffaloes were up by 16 points, 52-36 after a J'Vonne Hadley layup with 15 minutes left in the second half. Lowkey I love all the tidbits about Spamton's character from Snowgrave. Everyone's there for the Kris and Noelle angst but I just really love how yucky he is and how much of his character you can get from it, stuff that usually people ignore when thinking about him

These are the mugshots of everyone you are going to kill. You got a head start. You already offed CROWBAR (7), MATCHSTICKS (11), and QUARTERS (14), depleting them of some of their muscle. You've still got to watch out for the others, and stay wary of their despicable time shenanigans. ITCHY (1) has given you the slip repeatedly. DOZE (2) you've captured and interrogated just as repeatedly, to no avail. TRACE (3) has broken into your secret hideout more times than you can count, while FIN (5) always seems to be a step ahead of you and scoops your heists. CLOVER (4) has all the intel and is highly cooperative. You might need him to crack the vault. He'll be guarded. Best to avoid DIE (6) in any direct confrontations unless you want a temporal mess on your hands. But if you need any repairs, you could always get to STITCH (9) and "persuade" him. And you might need to if you can't kill SAWBUCK (10) with a clean shot. EGGS (12) and BISCUITS (13) are morons. But they are dangerous morons. CANS (15) is a tank and your crew'll probably need more ammunition than you packed to take him down. No one knows what LORD ENGLISH looks like. But that'll be corrected tonight. You've got dibs on English. He's all yours.

Author commentary: Here we are introduced to mug shots of the cult fan-favorite gang of time-traveling mobsters known as the Felt. The arc of this intermission as a whole has an uncharacteristically clear objective by Homestuck standards. Slick is supposed to kill all of these guys one by one, then finally encounter Lord English and kill him. (LMAO at this notion. It's a nice thought though, Slick.) The fun of this caper involves getting to know these morons, seeing their stupid powers in play, and generally getting swept up in the delirious idiocy of the resulting time shenanigans until everything goes to shit. So, somewhat a microcosm of Homestuck itself. In fact, this intermission turns out to be a great primer that helps brace the reader for keeping up with a lot of insane time-travel nonsense that quickly picks up steam soon after.

UNC Asheville: 2022-23 Big South Men's Basketball Champions

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Drew Pember had 29 points, Tajion Jones scored 16 in the final 7:35 and No. 1 seed UNC Asheville stormed back to beat seventh-seeded Campbell 77-73 on Sunday, winning the Big South conference tournament championship and advancing to the NCAA tournament for the fifth time.

Ricky Clemons hit a jumper to give Campbell a 66-52 lead, and then Jones took over. The senior guard scored 10 straight points for the Bulldogs (27-7) after Pember made two free throws to cut their deficit to 68-64 with 3:41 to go. Clemons and Jones traded 3-pointers and Pember followed with a three-point play to get UNC Asheville within 71-70.

Clemons hit a jumper with 1:44 to play but the Fighting Camels would not score again. Pember, who has attempted and made more free throws than anyone else in the country, sank a pair. Clemons was fouled but missed both free throws and Jones buried a 3-pointer to put the Bulldogs on top 75-73 with 55 seconds left. The last time UNC Asheville had had the lead the score was 13-11.

Pember, the Big South's Player of the Year, hit 9 of 19 shots but just 1 of 6 from 3-point range. He made 10 of 12 foul shots. Jones sank 9 of 14 shots, including 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. They each grabbed eight rebounds. Fletcher Abee hit three from distance and scored 11.

Jay Pal scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Fighting Camels. The senior made 11 of 18 shots and grabbed 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. He added four assists and blocked two shots. Big South Freshman of the Year Anthony Dell'Orso scored 12 points -- just two after halftime -- and snagged seven rebounds. Clemons, a former walk-on who is now a senior, hit two 3-pointers and scored 17 before fouling out.

Pal had 16 points and eight rebounds by halftime to guide Campbell to a 38-35 lead at intermission.

The Fighting Camels (16-18) made their only trip to the Big Dance in 1992, losing to eventual champion Duke in the first round 82-56. Campbell is the sixth No. 7 seed to advance to the Big South title game. All six lost to the top seed.

UNC Asheville sports a 2-4 record in its four previous NCAA tourney appearances.

VERY WELL THEN-

Plot A: After a disastrous last year, Kāla and Mahina, a pair of 12 year old cousins from Malie City, pair up together (begrudgingly, courtesy of their parents) and head to Melemele Island to retry the Island Challenge despite not wanting to. In attempt to get away from the cousin she doesn't like all that much and hates oh so desperately, Mahina challenges Kāla to a nuzlocke, a popular and controversial internet challenge that has been going around for a couple sum years, and, predictably, in Mahina's eyes, Kāla accepts it. Meanwhile, Mahina plans to head home and somehow, forfeit the challenge (this part might change im not sure about this because i want it to forfeit or somehow get ejected from the challenge but idk how to make it a significant turning point in mahina's life). But all of her plans change when she runs into the most peculiar girl. With all of this shenaniganry happening, the two, along with their newly acquired friends, can't help but keep running into each other and uh. Yeah. Chaos ensues in their wake.

Plot B: Kakeru and Chiho, two professor's assistants from the Kanjoh area take up an internship with the Aether Foundation to study Pokémon and other nerd shit like that. This goes as well as you think, and it doesn't help when you and your plans caught in the crossfire of the chaos a group of 11-12 year olds are causing. SOMEHOW.

Plot C: Mizuki, an 11 year old girl from Vermillion City, moves to Melemele Island with her mother to live a more peaceful, simple, domestic life. However, her domestic life becomes not so domestic when she constantly gets caught in the crossfire of both Plot A and Plot B. Less of an arc and more of like those like. Nichijou intermission animation kind or stuff things.

i was gonna add more but i had a sudden brainfart and now i can't. feel free to ask me about these though i'd love to clarify stuff because that helps me remember i think. the chaotic nature of the plot is kind of inspired by into the woods and comedy anime like nichijou and asobi asobase because god. i love that musical and ever since i saw a local production of it i am forever attatched to it and im like. just drawn to comedy anime

Brown Powers Golden Bears Past Colorado

Cal Shoots 58 Percent In 80-76 Victory

BERKELEY (AP) – Joel Brown scored a career-high 21 points, freshman Grant Newell posted his first double-double and California started out the new year right with a big home victory over Colorado. The Golden Bears made a blistering 58 percent (29 of 50) of their shots, marking their best field-goal percentage in a Pac-12 game since shooting 60 percent at Washington eight years ago.  Brown sank 9 of 14 shots with a 3-pointer for the Bears. Newell finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Lars Thiemann had 12 points, Kuany Kuany scored 11 and DeJuan Clayton added 10 with three assists. Thiemann scored all his points in the first half - sinking 4 of 6 shots from the floor and all four of his free throws - to guide the Golden Bears to a 39-27 lead at halftime. Cal, which led for all but the first 26 seconds of the game, shot 60% from the floor (15 of 26) and made 4 of 5 from 3-point range over the first 20 minutes of play. The Buffaloes shot 40% overall but hit just 1 of 12 from beyond the arc before intermission.

Brown and Clayton scored five points apiece to open the second half and the Bears upped their lead to 49-33 with 14:25 remaining. Sam Alajiki made two free throws to put Cal up 74-56 with 2:14 left to play before the Buffaloes rallied. Simpson had a three-point play, a 3-pointer and a layup and Hadley followed with a layup and a dunk to pull the Buffs within 74-68 with 48 seconds left. Simpson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 79-76 with six seconds to go, but Brown made the second of two free throws to wrap up the win. Simpson paced Colorado (9-6, 1-3) with 25 points and five assists. J'Vonne Hadley scored 17 on 8-of-11 shooting. Cal improved to 15-3 all-time at home against the Buffaloes. The Bears also managed to end Colorado’s five-game win streak despite being without leading scorer Devin Askew, who missed his third game of the season with an injury.  It was California’s first conference win.

My favorite movies aren't even short-story scale but poetry-chapbook scale. Luckily, streaming creates a space outside of television & theatres for audiovisual work that is closer in narrative scale to novels -- a "season" of a streaming miniseries is functionally an 8-12 hour long movie with recommended intermission points, intended for consumption in a single sitting.

There's a whole... tempo thing, though. (Which has a connection to style, but a deeper connection to narrative.) For instance, people generally read western comics a lot slower than manga, because manga has been constructed for fast consumption. Some novels are best consumed in as few sittings as possible; others are best consumed over a long period of time. A story that places a lot of weight into an accumulation of equally-important details (ex., a story that has a bunch of complicated sudden twists, or that has an enormous cast of minimally-sketched characters) benefits from quick consumption -- details can be kept in memory for a few days at most, so if you try to spread this kind of story out further it tends to become literally incomprehensible, and fast consumption promotes taking twists at face value, so often if you spent too much time considering the plot of this kind of story it starts to seem stupid too. Meanwhile, a story that puts you in the position of sharing a character's arc will benefit from slow consumption because people take a long time to change. Stories that need to be consumed slowly are less easy to re-consume (since they require more mental & emotional labor and also are more memorable) but benefit more from being revisited. And in one sense, any auditory or audio-visual work has its tempo fixed at one second per second. But actually, semantic density can vary a lot, as can thematic density, and sometimes works that seem the most sparse from one perspective are the densest from another (ex., Tarkovsky's STALKER). Binge-oriented streaming miniseries, because they only have a primary market (you only watch them on the streaming site, instead of having a theatre / home video separation like movies, or a seasonal / syndication / home video separation like broadcast TV), are often high-tempo shows (in order to drive early engagement) and end up being disposable.

I get annoyed by like... the length constraints on movies making it kind of impossible for them to be fully fleshed out and self-consistent. Tho I think this is mostly just a subset of the general issue of people having different preferences in their media than me
