EOI1 – Statistics!
It’s statistics time straight from the homestuck gamefaq!! I really enjoyed collecting stats for this arc so I could see how they compare to the early acts as a whole.
Homestuck’s Midnight Crew Intermission ran for 26 days, 25 of which had an update – a near perfect 96% record. It comprises 204 pages with an average of 7.8 pages per day (8.2 on update days). This is significantly higher than Acts 1-3, which have an overall average of 4.2 pages per day (5.2 on update days). Overall, the Intermission is 8.6% of Homestuck by time, and 15% by page count.
The Intermission includes 986 words in titles, 6,818 words of narrative text, and 0 words in chatlogs, for a total of 7,804 words. This averages 38.3 words per page, and over 300 words per day. Acts 1-3 had an overall average of 46.4 words per page, but only 31.1 words per page if chatlogs are discounted – so the intermission is wordier than the acts in its narrative text, probably because the dialog is contained there.
The Intermission has 244 panels, of which 97 are still images (39.8%), 146 are GIFs (59.8%), one is a Flash animation (0.4%) and none are interactive. 34 pages (16.7%) include more than one panel, and page 1210 had the most panels on a single page, with four. Compared to Acts 1-3, this is a similar ratio of still images to GIFs, but a lower percentage of more complex panels – likely because the LOWAS walkaround was being worked on simultaneously. The Intermission only includes one [S] page and one new music track, ‘Three in the Morning’ by Clark Powell on page 1167.
In total, 110 Intermission pages are titled with a command (53.9%), 109 of which came from the player and one of which came from Spades Slick (to carcinoGeneticist). Four pages have a non-command title, while 89 are titled ‘[I] ==>’ and one is titled ‘[S][I] ==>’. Of the 110 commands issued, 64 were addressed to Spades Slick (58.2%), including two to Past Spades Slick. Clubs Deuce received the second most commands with 19 (17.3%), followed by Diamonds Droog with 14 (12.7%), Hearts Boxcars with 12 (10.9%) and carcinoGeneticist with one (0.9%).
I identified seven point of view characters in the Intermission – the four Midnight Crew members, Itchy, Die and carcinoGeneticist – in addition to the player and narrator. Of those, Spades Slick is the point of view character for 99 pages (48.5%). He’s followed by Diamonds Droog with 27 pages (13.2%), Clubs Deuce with 25 (12.3%), Hearts Boxcars with 16 (7.8%), Die with four (2.0%), Itchy with two (1.0%) and carcinoGeneticist with one (0.5%). Additionally, 31 pages (15.2%) are zoomed out, ‘player-POV’ pages, and one page (p.1217) is from the narrator’s point of view, using the rare first person pronoun.
This makes Spades Slick the clear ‘main character’ of the Intermission, receiving 58.2% of commands and being the POV character for 48.5% of pages. For context, across the entirety of Acts 1-3, John Egbert receives 42.4% of all commands and was the point of view character for 33.2% of the story. Rose has 17.2% of commands and 18.7% of POV pages, Dave has 12.5% and 12.1%, and Jade has 10.3% and 11.1%. So, the beta kids and Midnight Crew both have an obvious ‘leader’ in narrative terms, with the other three members receiving significantly less screen time than the leader, but similar amounts to each other.
