Whoa! This mermaid is Pissed! Though I guess "Mad" could just be a shortening for something beautiful and elegant like "Madeline" or "Maddison" or perhaps "Madwoman". Either way, she is one of seven bosses that Toad can fight in Wario's Woods, a drop-down puzzle game for the NES (and SNES, but we'll get to that in a minute) most notable for being the last officially-licensed game released on the console, a whole four years into the lifespan of the SNES! We've already gone over most of the Wario's Woods denizens in a couple of posts, but with the exception of the NES bosses!

The bosses in this game all play pretty much identically, summoning enemies and occasionally teleporting around. To damage them, you line up the thingies of the same color next to them, as you can see in the gif above. Yuppppp. She also appeared in Super Mario-Kun, where she is shown to be a shapeshifter!

I searched everywhere for more, but since Super Mario-Kun is apparently both very poorly archived and approximately three infinities long, here's some highlights courtesy of her Super Mario Wiki page! Wario has enthralled her by poisoning the lake she resides in, and after a fight, Mario and co. cure her by....... having Yoshi drink and subsequently urinate her out. Turns out this mermaid really was Pissed after all I guess.

Anyway, after that, her true form is revealed: a big fat anthropomorphic fish in a dress. If you don't think she's just as beautiful, get out of my sight. That's where I’d leave off the post normally, but as you may have noticed, we haven't yet touched on the SNES release of Wario's Woods. This brings us to the second half of the post...

Finally, someone calls Toad out on his trademark foolhardiness! Yes, Wario's Woods (SNES) includes a mermaid boss just like its NES counterpart. The odd thing here to me is not just that they went to the trouble of making a unique character that still sticks so close to Mad's design rather than outright cutting and pasting her into WW(SNES); but that of WW(SNES)'s seventeen non-Wario bosses, only one of them seems to bear any similarity to WW(NES)'s six.

Why go to the trouble of designing unique boss casts across both releases? Why not just distribute WW(NES)'s comparatively scanty lineup into WW(SNES)'s, which is almost three times as large? I mean, as a writer for a blog which hinges around novel and bizarre designs in the Mario franchise, I should really be thankful, but from a development standpoint it is just so odd! Especially considering both versions were designed and released concurrently! I think the most likely explanation here is poor coordination between design teams, though they did still have one member in common, so who's to say?

Anyway, all of that is to say that the circumstances surrounding Aqualea's conception are kind of infinitely more interesting than her design itself. Sorry, Aqualea! Although my sapphic sensibilities make it pretty hard to write you off completely, your cute-girl-ness can only get you so far, and novelty is unfortunately very much not on your side here.

Above, you can see how the boss gameplay differs from WW(NES). Instead of taking place on a single field, it now takes place across two, as is more traditional for competitive drop-down puzzle games. I really enjoy the unique SMB2(USA)-style sprite sets every boss has for this purpose. Seems like a good opportunity for a very niche ROM hack, if you ask me!

Every boss is also given a unique "lose" sprite for when you've defeated them. These are usually just a given boss's face in a distraught expression, but Aqualea is exceptional in that regard. I will now leave you with what is, in my opinion, the single most charming lose sprite of any boss in Wario's Woods (SNES):

So Me and a homie of mine talked about this idea since November 13th 2022 , and I just couldn't stop thinking about it that I had to at least draw something for this. It was originally going to be a Waluigi wardrobe and sketch design of him, but I went overboard

I'm not exactly a gaming nerd to know what to reference and say this sounds like, but from what I played, I can say this is a mix between Kirby's Epic Yarn and Animal Crossing.

I have so much to talk about with this idea, I really wanna make this into an actual game, maybe not a console game but a free game for Steam or devices like phones and tablets or something.

I'm not sure. But what I do know for sure is that I will be doodling more of this and Waluigi cause damn he's so cool, and Number 1 in our hearts

How to create pixel art the easy way 😎

Take an existing drawing.

Open it in PaintNET.

If viable, set "Canvas Size…" so that the height and width are both divisible by 4.

Go to "Resize…" → "Resampling: Nearest Neighbor" → "By percentage: 25%" → apply

Go to "Resize…" again → "By percentage: 400%" → apply

You now have pixel art in less than 2 minutes. 😎

This also makes supposed pixel art projects far less often needed.

In the cases of many other art pieces, it still looks far too detailed to simply go 25%→400%, and may instead need for example "divisible by 5"→20%→500%, etc.

Favorite obscure Mario characters?

A loaded question for sure. But let's see.

For Mario Golf, Plum and the N64 cast are the main ones. I imagine they were created to not only increase the playable characters, but to also expand on the Mario World a little. Shame they weren't kept like Waluigi was.

There's also Buzz and Helen. I really wish these two were playable characters! Shame that it seems they almost were before they were cut.

I also took a liking to Napple during my playthrough of Mobile Golf. (Before it was translated.) Honestly, it would've been neat to have the Mobile cast at least acknowledged in Advance Tour.

For Mario Tennis, Clay and Ace are certainly my main favorites, and I'm sad that we'll never see their story continued.

Nina and Kate are funny, because in the past, I kind of hated them for silly reasons, but now the two have become some of my favorites.

For someone truly unexpected, I kind of took a liking to the Academy Headmaster and his secretary, Samantha. I guess it came about from a fanfic I wrote, haha!

There's also the Union Headmistress as well. Poor lady. Her school will succeed someday!

I also have a soft spot towards Mad and Aqualea as well. (More so Mad, since she appears a bit more often)

And who could forget Mona's old rival, Vanessa? Shame she - and Pizza Dinosaur - have been forgotten. i think she would've made for a fun rival for Mona.

That's about it from me. I hope I'm not missing someone, but I likely am, lol.

Sidenote, I always thought it was a bit of a shame you couldn't play as any of the strange and creative CPU opponents in the SNES version of Wario's Woods multiplayer. I loved all of them like Tad Stone, Sven, Aqualea, Katsini, Wario of course, ETC!

I don't really play very many puzzle games but I feel like that's pretty standard for puzzle games, you always get a limited number of playable characters, but there's way more opponents than what's on the roster. Still, I agree, at the very least, the title character Wario should be available...

That being said, I'd rather not take away Toad's only solo game prior to captain Toad ( which is apparantly not even "THE Toad" according to official lore ( God I hate having to put a "THE" in front of Toad... )

So as a fan of obscure mario characters, I've always pushed for in the inclusion of characters like Pauline, Captain Syrup, Stanley the Bugman, DK Jr, Shokora, Merelda, Aqualea, Mad, Sarissa, Tatanga, Wart, Rudy the Clown, and many more for quite a long time.

I was a huge Pauline fan as a 10 year old back in 2010, I had a feeling around 2014 with Smash Wii U/3DS with her trophy and Tipping Stars that she was getting a lot of attention from out of nowhere, and I said on Miiverse (RIP) that she was gonna be in something big.

Then Odyssey happened, got so happy I cried, she got announced playable for the first time ever in Aces, I cried again. This character I loved since I was a kid was finally getting attention and love from other people, I was so happy...

And now, with this mario movie... I don't have a feeling about it because he didn't even get a spirit in Smash Ultimate, but Foreman Spike, out of nowhere, is in the public eye again. They even gave him an icon, so I'm really really hoping that he's coming back for good and joining the spinoffs or maybe even in a mainline game.

So let's see some Foreman Spike love!!!

Kh3 Countdown day 22

AquaLea : These two also have things in commun, like how their best friends (*cough* boyfriends *cough*) was manipulate to become Xehanort vessel (and I refer to Isa and Terra, even if Xion is nort, Lea doesn’t remember her, at least yet). How loyal they’re to their friends. I honestly really want them to team up and beat Xehanort ass and bring their boyfriends to their normal self !

Kaishinami : I totally see these three to get along ! I mean sure Xion will be awkward toward Kairi at first, but after some times I totally see these girls become sisters ! I totally see Kairi (and in less extend Namine, well it’s depends of the context) show Xion how to behave and learn more about life (bc she probably doesn’t know a lot of thing). I see Xion and Kairi always support Namine whatever she’s doing as long as she’s happy. I see them have some girls time alone without the boys. And Xion and Namine tease Kairi about Sora like 99% of the time. Please let them bond in kh3 or/and after !
