April 20, Beijing, China, National Museum of China/äøå›½å›½å®¶åšē‰©é¦† (Part 2 - Dehua white porcelain exhibition/德化ē™½ē“·å±• continued):
This was actually the very first piece I encountered at the entrance to the exhibition, a gigantic basket of flowers (probably over 1 meter tall and over 1 meter wide?), the entire thing made of porcelain.
Tumblr media
And to reiterate, every part of every piece is porcelain. Though I will say that despite the ultra-realistic shape of the flower petals and leaves, the only detail that hinted at these flowers being made out of porcelain was that the painted colors weren't as vibrant as real flowers. That's it. If you don't examine it up close you really can't tell that it's all porcelain.
Tumblr media
This is a good place to roughly introduce the technical side of Dehua white porcelain. The color of Dehua white porcelain mainly comes from the clay it uses, which is a special kaolin clay (gaolingtu/高岭土 in Chinese) found in Dehua. The clay mineral used naturally contains sericite and quartz, both of which are silica minerals and may have contibuted to the almost translucent look of the finished pieces; it also contains comparatively high amounts of potassium oxides, while the amount of iron oxides present is low. Due to the intricate designs of the pieces, the firing success rate may be very low. All those pieces involving super thin parts representing fabric or paper or flower petals? They may bring the success rate down to about 5%. Which means many of these pieces may be the 15th-20th try that finally survived firing. For people who are more interested in the chemistry of Dehua white porcelain, this paper goes into depth about it. There's also a great book in Chinese that goes into depth all about Dehua porcelain. (link goes to the first chapter only)
Continuing on, this is one of many Guanyin/č§‚éŸ³ (Avalokiteśvara) statues at the exhibition, again with light clothing made out of porcelain:
Tumblr media
More Guanyin statues in various classic depictions/forms, of which there are 33 total. This particular form is called Yulan Guanyin/é±¼ēÆ®č§‚éŸ³ (é±¼ēÆ® means fish basket), and comes from a legend where Guanyin transformed into a beautiful female fish vendor in order to guide mortals.
Tumblr media
I believe the text here reads ꌁē»č§‚音 (Guanyin holding scripture)? The Guanyin here is holding a vase instead of a scroll though.
Tumblr media
This is a classic depiction of Guanyin with a little bit of a modern-ish twist? Guanyin is often depicted with a vase of divine water, but here it forms a circle.
Tumblr media
Despite some of the Guanyin statues having the amazing ceramic "clothing", this one remains my favorite, just because of the sense of space and serenity that this simple "frame" design creates:
Tumblr media
And this very literal take on "thousand arm Guanyin" (åƒę‰‹č§‚éŸ³). It's giving me that "biblically accurate angels" vibe:
Tumblr media
Buddha floating atop.......idk what that is but the texture is amazing:
Tumblr media
A fully painted statue of Guanyu/关ē¾½. The gradient and detailed patterns on his robes is amazing:
Tumblr media
Two identical (I think?) statues of the daomadan/åˆ€é©¬ę—¦ (female commander archetype) character Mu Guiying/ē©†ę”‚英 as she would appear in Chinese traditional opera, one painted and one unpainted. The word å·¾åø¼č‹±é›„ in the title means "hero in women's headscarf", which is a term used exclusively in reference to female heroes. There's also the phrase "å·¾åø¼äøč®©é”»ēœ‰", which roughly means "those in women's headscarves aren't inferior to those with beards and thick brows"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Porcelain depiction of Dunhuang's famous feitian/飞天 figures, in the classic pose of playing pipa in reverse (called 反弹ēµē¶). The clothing on this figure is made of porcelain, but this time also painted:
Tumblr media
A porcelain statue of a couple in traditional Lhoba/Luoba/ēžå·“ clothing. The Lhoba/Luoba people are one of China's 55 å°‘ę•°ę°‘ę— who mainly live in the south-eastern region of Tibet Autonomous Region, and as of 2019, it is the å°‘ę•°ę°‘ę— with the smallest population
Tumblr media
A porcelain statue of a woman in traditional Miao/苗 clothing. I love how the artist recreated the traditional Miao silver crown in porcelain.
Tumblr media
Painted porcelain bust of a woman wearing the Xunbu/čŸ³åŸ” "flower crown", named a zanhuawei/ē°ŖčŠ±å›“. The town of Xunbu in Fujian province is known for its tradition of zanhua/ē°Ŗ花, or wearing flowers in oneā€™s hair.
Tumblr media
Porcelain statue of a Buddhist monk wearing a zhiduo/ē›“č£° (the robes on the inside) and a jiasha/č¢ˆč£Ÿ (ą¤•ą¤¾ą¤·ą¤¾ą¤Æ/kasaya; the garment on the outside that drapes over the left shoulder). From its looks, one can tell that zhiduo originated from hanfu, but with some minor changes (sidenote, this is not the same as the zhiduo of Ming-era hanfu). Jiasha evolved from the clothing of Indian Buddhist monks, but there appears to be a lot of influence from Central Asia and ancient Greece as well (link goes to pdf; this article is in Chinese).
Tumblr media
Some modern-themed pieces. Look at those dresses omg
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A porcelain statue of Hua Mulan/花ęœØ兰, the character from traditional Chinese literature and opera that inspired the Disney character. I will say though this pose reminds me of someone else.......

Noticed that Elliott has the arrival dates of Luther (3rd event), April 10th 1962, and Allison (2nd event), June 29th 1961, pinned to his wall, and figured I might as well try and calculate how old everyone is..
(Elliott's date for Diego is wrong, placing him at Sep 17th, when he arrived on Sep 1st.)
These are not perfect dates but they should be fairly close? and I'm not very good at maths so please correct me!
Hargreeves' ages in age order:
Five
Disappears at 13 yr, 1 mo, and 9 days old.
His new birthday in the apocalypse is now: 22nd February
+ 45 years in the apocalypse + an unknown amount of time in the commission makes him at least 58 yr, 1 mo, and 9 days old at the start of s1.
+ 8 days in s1 makes him at least 58 yr, 1 mo, and 17 days old at the start of s2.
+ 8 days in s2 makes him at least 58 yr, 1 mo, and 25 days old at the start of s3.
+ 7 days in s3 makes him at least 58 yr, 2 mo, and 2 days old at the end of s3.
From s1 - s3 he has aged 23 days.
Using this estimate (his minimum age) Five's new birthday in the reset universe might be: 5th February
Klaus
Travels to Vietnam at 29 yr, 5 mo, and 26 days old.
(Klaus leaves Vietnam on February 21st, supposedly arriving in Vietnam on April 21st) His new birthday in Vietnam is now: 25th October
+ 10 months in Vietnam makes him 30 yr, 3 mo, and 26 days old when he returns to March 28th 2019.
+ 3 days to finish s1 makes him 30 yr, 3 mo, 29 days old at the end of s1.
(Klaus arrives in Dallas on February 11th) His new birthday in Dallas is now: 12th October
+3 yr, 9 mo, and 4 days in the 60s makes him 34 yrs, 1 mo, 3 days old at the start of s2.
+ 8 days in s2 makes him 34 yrs, 1 mo, 11 days old at the start of s3.
+ 7 days in s3 makes him 34 yrs, 1 mo, 18 days old at the end of s3.
His new birthday in the reset universe is now: 20th February
Allison
Allison is 29 yr, 6 mo old at the end of s1.
(She arrives in Dallas on June 29th) Her new birthday in Dallas is now: 29th December
+ 2 yr, 4 mo, 17 days in the 60s makes her 31 yr, 10 mo, and 17 days old at the start of s2.
+ 8 days in s2 makes her 31 yr, 10 mo, 25 days old at the start of s3.
+ 7 days in s3 makes her 31 yr, 11 mo, 2 days old at the end of s3.
Her new birthday in the reset universe is now: 6th May
Luther
Luther is 29 yr, 6 mo old at the end of s1.
(He arrives in Dallas on April 10th) His new birthday in Dallas is now: 10th October
+ 1 yr, 7 mo, 5 days in the 60s makes him 31 yr, 1 mo, 5 days old at the start of s2.
+ 8 days in s2 makes him 31 yr, 1 mo, 13 days old at the start of s3.
+ 7 days in s3 makes him 31 yr, 1 mo, 20 days old at the end of s3.
His new birthday in the reset universe is now: 18th February
Diego
Diego is 29 yr, 6 mo old at the end of s1.
+ 2 mo, 14 days in the 60s (2 mo, 5 days in the asylum) makes him 29 yr, 8 mo, 14 days old at the beginning of s2.
+ 8 days in s2 makes him 29 yr, 8 mo, 22 days old at the start of s3.
+ 7 days in s3 makes him 29 yr, 8 mo, 29 days old at the end of s3.
His new birthday in the reset universe is now: 9th July
Viktor
Viktor is 29 yr, 6 mo old at the end of s1.
+ 1 mo, 3 days in the 60s makes him 29 yr, 7 mo, 3 days old at the start of s2.
+ 8 days in s2 makes him 29 yr, 7 mo, 11 days old at the start of s3.
+ 7 days in s3 makes him 29 yr, 7 mo, 18 days old at the end of s3.
His new birthday in the reset universe is now: 20th August
Lila
her age is completely unknown. we can guess she's around the same age as the umbrellas but otherwise she's a mystery.
Ritu Arya, her actress, was 32 in 2020 when s2 was released so that's as close to canon as we know right now, (except, the majority of the cast are older than their on screen counterparts, except for David who was actually born in 1989 and Aidan in s1 as he was 13 when he was cast).
The only other information we have on her age is that she was orphaned and kidnapped at 4. and that she spent 3 months in Berlin between s2 and s3.
Sparrows
All of the Sparrows are 29 yrs, 6 mo, 1 day old at the start of s3:
Marcus dies at 29 yrs, 6 mo, 1 day old.
Jayme and Alphonso die at 29 yrs, 6 mo, 3 days old.
Fei and Chris die at 29 yrs, 6 mo, 6 days old.
Sloane goes missing at 29 yrs, 6 mo, 7 days old.
Sparrow Ben enters the reset universe at 29 yrs, 6 mo, 7 days old.
Ben and Sloane's birthday's remain as October 1st
i think? please do correct me if im wrong!
tua s4 speculation under the cut
if s4 is 6 years on then the ages we have are:
Five is 64 in a 19yro body
Klaus is 40
Allison is 38
Luther is 37
Diego is 36
Viktor is 36
Ben is 36
Lila and Diego's kid is probably turning 6 yro.
Claire could be anywhere between 17 and 13 since she seems to be a teenager?

A Nazi rally held in Madison Square Garden, February 20th 1939

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
October 21, 2024
Heather Cox Richardson
Oct 22, 2024
On Saturday, September 7, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump predicted that his plan to deport 15 to 20 million people currently living in the United States would be ā€œbloody.ā€ He also promised to prosecute his political opponents, including, he wrote, lawyers, political operatives, donors, illegal voters, and election officials. Retired chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley told journalist Bob Woodward that Trump is ā€œa fascist to the coreā€¦the most dangerous person to this country.ā€Ā
On October 14, Trump told Fox News Channel host Maria Bartiromo that he thought enemies within the United States were more dangerous than foreign adversaries and that he thought the military should stop those ā€œradical left lunaticsā€ on Election Day. Since then, he has been talking a lot about ā€œthe enemy from within,ā€ specifically naming Representative Adam Schiff and former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, both Democrats from California, as ā€œbad people.ā€ Schiff was the chair of the House Intelligence Committee that broke the 2019 story of Trumpā€™s attempt to extort Volodymyr Zelensky that led to Trumpā€™s first impeachment.Ā
Trumpā€™s references to the ā€œenemy from withinā€ have become so frequent that former White House press secretary turned political analyst Jen Psaki has called them his closing argument for the 2024 election, and she warned that his construction of those who oppose him as ā€œenemiesā€ might sweep in virtually anyone he feels is a threat.
In a searing article today, political scientist Rachel Bitecofer ofĀ The CycleĀ explored exactly what that means in a piece titled ā€œWhat (Really) Happens If Trump Wins?ā€ Bitecofer outlined Adolf Hitlerā€™s January 30, 1933, oath of office, in which he promised Germans he would uphold the constitution, and the three months he took to dismantle that constitution.
By March, she notes,Ā  the concentration camp Dachau was open. Its first prisoners were not Jews, but rather Hitlerā€™s prominent political opponents. By April, Jews had been purged from the civil service, and opposition political parties were illegal. By May, labor unions were banned and students were burning banned books. Within the year, public criticism of Hitler and the Nazis was illegal, and denouncing violators paid well for those who did it.
Bitecofer writes that Trump has promised mass deportations ā€œthat he cannot deliver unless he violates both the Constitution and federal law.ā€ To enable that policy, Trump will need to dismantle the merit-based civil service and put into office those loyal to him rather than the Constitution. And then he will purge his political opponents, for once those who would stand against him are purged, Trump can act as he wishes against immigrants, for example, and others.
Ninety years ago, as American reporter Dorothy Thompson ate breakfast at her hotel in Berlin on August 25, 1934, a young man from Hitlerā€™s secret police, the Gestapo, ā€œpolitely handed me a letter and requested a signed receipt.ā€ She thought nothing of it, she said, ā€œBut what a surprise was in store for me!ā€ The letter informed her that, ā€œin light of your numerous anti-German publications,ā€ she was being expelled from Germany.
She was the first American journalist expelled from Nazi Germany, and that expulsion was no small thing. Thompson had moved to London in 1920 to become a foreign correspondent and began to spend time in Berlin. In 1924 she moved to the city to head the Central European Bureau for theĀ New York Evening PostĀ and theĀ Philadelphia Public Ledger. From there, she reported on the rise of Adolf Hitler. She left her Berlin post in 1928 to marry novelist Sinclair Lewis, and the two settled in Vermont.
When the couple traveled to Sweden in 1930 for Lewis to accept the Nobel Prize in Literature, Thompson visited Germany, where she saw the growing strength of the fascists and the apparent inability of the Naziā€™s opponents to come together to stand against them. She continued to visit the country in the following years, reporting on the rise of fascism there, and elsewhere.Ā
In 1931, Thompson interviewed Hitler and declared that, rather than ā€œthe future dictator of Germanyā€ she had expected to meet, he was a man of ā€œstartling insignificance.ā€ She asked him if he would ā€œabolish the constitution of the German Republic.ā€ He answered: ā€œI will get into power legallyā€ and, once in power, abolish the parliament and the constitution and ā€œfound an authority-state, from the lowest cell to the highest instance; everywhere there will be responsibility and authority above, discipline and obedience below.ā€ She did not believe he could succeed: ā€œImagine a would-be dictator setting out toĀ persuade a sovereign people to vote away their rights,ā€ she wrote in apparent astonishment.
Thompson was back in Berlin in summer 1934 as a representative of theĀ Saturday Evening PostĀ when she received the news that she had 24 hours to leave the country. The other foreign correspondents in Berlin saw her off at the railway station with ā€œgreat sheaves of American Beauty roses.ā€Ā
Safely in Paris, Thompson mused that in her first years in Germany she had gotten to know many of the officials of the German republic, and that when she had left to marry Lewis, they offered ā€œmany expressions of friendship and gratitude.ā€ But times had changed. ā€œI thought of them sadly as my train pulled out,ā€ she said, ā€œcarrying me away from Berlin. Some of those officials still are in the service of the German Government, some of them are Ć©migrĆ©s and some of them are dead.ā€Ā
Thompson came home to a nation where many of the same dark impulses were simmering, her fame after her expulsion from Germany following her. She lectured against fascism across the country in 1935, then began a radio program that reached tens of millions of listeners. Hired in 1936 to write a regular column three days a week for theĀ New York Herald Tribune, she became a leading voice in print, too, warning that what was happening in Germany could also happen in America.Ā
In an echo of Lewisā€™s bestselling 1935 novelĀ It Canā€™t Happen Here, she wrote in a 1937 column: ā€œNo people ever recognize their dictator in advanceā€¦. He always represents himself as the instrument for expressing the Incorporated National Will. When Americans think of dictators they always think of some foreign model. If anyone turned up here in a fur hat, boots and a grim look he would be recognized and shunnedā€¦. But when our dictator turns up, you can depend on it that he will be one of the boys, and he will stand for everything traditionally American.ā€Ā
In less than two years, the circulation of her column had grown to reach between seven and eight million people. In 1939 a reporter wrote: ā€œShe is read, believed and quoted by millions of women who used to get their political opinions from their husbands, who got them from [political commentator] Walter Lippmann.ā€ The reporter likened Thompson to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, saying they were the two ā€œmost influential women in the U.S.ā€
When 22,000 American Nazis held a rally at New York Cityā€™s Madison Square Garden in honor of President George Washingtonā€™s birthday on February 20, 1939, Thompson sat in the front row of the press box, where she laughed loudly during the speeches and yelled ā€œBunk!ā€ at the stage, illustrating that she would not be muzzled by Nazis. After being escorted out, she returned to her seat, where stormtroopers surrounded her. She later told a reporter: ā€œI was amazed to see a duplicate of what I saw seven years ago in Germany. Tonight I listened to words taken out of the mouth of Adolf Hitler.ā€Ā
Two years later, In 1941, Thompson returned to the issue she had raised when she mused about those government officials who had gone from thanking her to expelling her. In a piece forĀ Harperā€™s MagazineĀ titled ā€œWho Goes Nazi?ā€ she wrote: ā€œIt is an interesting and somewhat macabre parlor game to play at a large gathering of oneā€™s acquaintances: to speculate who in a showdown would go Nazi,ā€ she wrote. ā€œBy now, I think I know. I have gone through the experience many timesā€”in Germany, in Austria, and in France. I have come to know the types: the born Nazis, the Nazis whom democracy itself has created, the certain-to-be fellow-travelers. And I also know those who never, under any conceivable circumstances, would become Nazis.ā€
Examining a number of types of Americans, she wrote that the line between democracy and fascism was not wealth, or education, or race, or age, or nationality. ā€œKind, good, happy, gentlemanly, secure people never go Nazi,ā€ she wrote. They were secure enough to be good natured and open to new ideas, and they believed so completely in the promise of American democracy that they would defend it with their lives, even if they seemed too easygoing to join a struggle. ā€œBut the frustrated and humiliated intellectual, the rich and scared speculator, the spoiled son, the labor tyrant, the fellow who has achieved success by smelling out the wind of successā€”they would all go Nazi in a crisis,ā€ she wrote. ā€œThose who havenā€™t anything in them to tell them what they like and what they donā€™tā€”whether it is breeding, or happiness, or wisdom, or a code, however old-fashioned or however modern, go Nazi.ā€
In Paris following her expulsion from Berlin, Thompson told a reporter for theĀ Associated PressĀ that the reason she had been attacked was the same reason that Hitlerā€™s power was growing. ā€œChancellor Hitler is no longer a man, he is a religion,ā€ she said.
Suggesting her expulsion was because of her old article disparaging Hitler, in her own article about her expulsion she noted: ā€œMy offense was to think that Hitler is just an ordinary man, after all. That is a crime against the reigning cult in Germany, which says Mr. Hitler is a Messiah sent by God to save the German peopleā€¦. To question this mystic mission is so heinous that, if you are a German, you can be sent to jail. I, fortunately, am an American, so I merely was sent to Paris. Worse things can happenā€¦.ā€Ā

pardon me if youā€™re tired of discussing this but. we know aa7 is on capcomā€™s radar on some level. and now theyā€™ve rereleased every game right?? theyā€™ve finally run out of backlog material after almost yearly releases since 2019ā€¦. Not to put the clown wig and nose back on too early but do you think weā€™ll actually get news about, or get to see, aa7 next year?
Never tired of discussing this!! This is right around the time of year where I'd be preparing to make my yearly AA7 Speculation Post anyway so this is great timing. (TGS, my enemy, is approaching.)
So just to make sure everyone's on the same page, here's a quick recap of where we're currently at:
In November 2020 we got internal Capcom leaks which included a calendar from 2019 with the roadmap for the AA series the next couple of years. This included:
DGS1&2 collection, which I did not think was going to happen ever, releasing April-June 2021
AA7, releasing around October-December 2021, right around the 20th anniversary.
Through late 2019-mid 2022, reconsider porting 456
We got DGS1&2 (a bit later than in the plan, but by like a month), we got the 456 ports, we got bonus AAI ports, we have nothing for AA7 nearly three years after it was supposed to come out. The pandemic is an obvious feature that could contribute to its delay, but at this point with 456 ports out I think we can safely say that this was not the only cause.
Some other things that may or may not be contributing to AA7's delay include:
Yamazaki, the previous main writer for 5&6 and the AAIs, left Capcom in 2020. If he was involved in AA7 at all, that could throw a wrench into things, but I recall hearing he intended AA6 to be his last AA game (I AM STRUGGLING TO FIND THE SOURCE THOUGH SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME), so I don't think this contributed very much. It does, however, mean that we're unsure about who the next main writer is - depending on what Takumi's up to or if they had to bring someone new on, there could be complications related to that.
I think TGAA did way better than anyone expected, which I covered in this post. It's possible that this could have shifted Capcom's priorities to porting more old games / porting to all modern consoles. It may have made people at Capcom think "damn everyone loves Takumi" so they tried to lure him back to AA7, and I have no idea how well that would have gone or if Takumi is even interested in continuing mainline AA right now. (I do think this at least contributed to the Ghost Trick ports.)
In my first ever AA7 speculation post I talked about how the ending of AA6 kind of wrote them into a corner re: how to continue with the series and which protagonist to use. I still stand by that argument even if a lot of that post aged badly.
Console ports! Previously new AA games were for whichever Nintendo handheld is out now (GBA, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS). But now that the series is doing really well on all consoles, they may have decided to try to make their next mainline entry on all consoles, which would take more development time. Adding to this is that the Switch is near the end of its lifecycle with the Switch 2 (or whatever the successor will be) being announced soon - meaning that, if AA7 is coming out soon, Capcom is in the position of "do we try to squeeze this into the end of the Switch's lifecycle" (which, I'll need to find sources for this, is speculated to be some of the reasons behind why AAI2 and DGS2 sold badly when they were first released, and they can't make the same mistake thrice... right...?) or "do we try to time it with the release of the Switch 2"?
Also, a lot of this depends on how far AA7 was into development whenever it was derailed. If it was derailed from the pandemic, then according to the calendar, it would likely have still been in the prototype stage. It may be early enough that they would have had to start from scratch whenever they picked it up again. I don't work in the gaming industry so I have no idea how long it takes them to make a game or how easy it would be from what stage they're in.
One thing we can compare to is some of the comments about the recent AAI ports: in this interview, Shunsuke Nishida, the producer of the AAI collection, says that development on the collection began in 2022. He also mentions that this began once development on 456 was concluded. This leads me to believe that (contrary to my previous assumptions) 456 and AAIC were not developed concurrently (or if so, had very minimal overlap), and that the process of upscaling graphics, porting, and localization took them... about a year, maybe? So that takes time, even without taking into consideration how long it would take to come up with a new idea + write the script + the bulk of the programming that would have to be done that isn't considered with porting + probably way more than I can think of because again I do not work in the gaming industry.
There's also the question of why 456 and AAIC weren't developed concurrently. The calendar from 2020 shows that TGAA and AA7 were meant to be developed at least somewhat concurrently, and the staff from TGAA would eventually merge into working on AA7. Once again, we don't know what happened to the staff that were supposed to be working on AA7. It's possible pandemic complications meant they got shuffled onto other projects. It's possible the AA-related team is smaller now than it was in 2020, so they only have enough people to work on one project at a time. It's also possible that there's a team that was working on ports, and a team that was working on a new game, and now the "port team" is freed up to work on the "new game team".
Either way though, pretty much every interview with the staff for the 456 or AAI ports are all saying "look forward to the future of the series", which is definitely Corporate Speak, but unless they're bringing the ports of the Layton crossover (fingers crossed) that can only mean one thing. (AAI anime?) Plus, like I've discussed in this post, AA is having fantastic sales in general. They've seemingly either hired a new social media manager or changed the strategy so there is much more engagement on twitter. And AA is getting on bigger and bigger announcements - though AA trilogy ports were announced at TGS (at an AA-specific panel), TGAA duology ports were announced unceremoniously on twitter. Afterwards, 456 ports got announced at the Capcom Showcase during Summer Game Fest. And now AAI collection got announced at a Nintendo Direct, which I imagine is even more expensive, so the series must be going in a good direction for them to think that's worth it!
That's a lot of rambling for me to say I definitely think it's coming.
When are we going to see it though!!
Coming up in September is my eternal enemy Tokyo Game Show. Since AAI collection is being released at the beginning of September... it might be a bit too soon to announce a new game, but who knows. They might think it's profitable to ride the hype they're building now for AAI collection to announce a new game. Or they might let it sit for a while.
With AAIC getting announced at a Direct, I'm thinking they'll want to make AA7's announcement a) big and b) global. AA6 was announced in Famitsu, but the problem with that is that it's a mostly Japanese audience, and some interviews have been talking about how AA's global audience is particularly contributing to how big it is right now. So I'm expecting AA's next announcement to be at something major and something that will get attention from overseas audiences.
If they have been working on AA7 concurrently -- and honestly I do think there has at least been some progress on it since 2019 -- we could definitely see an announcement within the next year. I was also saying this in 2020, though, so don't take my word for it. There's been two year gaps between ports up until the AAI collection, and they seemed pretty proud about releasing 456 and AAI in the same year, so... maybe they'll want to keep it going and announce AA7 within the next year, especially if they'll have a longer announcement -> release period than they normally would for ports.
Potential candidates include:
Tokyo Game Show: As previously stated, it's very close to the AAIC release, so I don't think it's the best timing for it. I would not want my favorite AA game overshadowed by whatever the hell they're going to do with AA7. Likelihood: depends on how fast they want to follow up on the hype.
The Game Awards: is the next major gaming event, but that's already massive in terms of the type of games that get announced there, and it's expensive! Nintendo Direct is one thing since AA has always been a Nintendo-first series, but I don't think it's big enough to justify putting in a Game Awards ad. and I already have my clown wig on for persona 6 there. Likelihood: pretty low tbh
Next Year's Summer Game Fest-related Shows: I think this is the most likely, considering both the 456 collection and the AAI collection were announced around this time. For AA7 I'd say a Nintendo Direct to get lots of eyes on it, especially if AAIC sales pay off. Likelihood: pretty high!
Which leads me into my wildcard answer:
Switch 2 Announcement Stream: If Capcom decides to go in and make AA7 one of the first games for whatever the switch successor would be, it could be announced here. I regret to admit that I am a very bad gamer and only like two things, and therefore have not ever been present for one of these things to know how many games get announced as launch games for a new console, but, like, it's possible.
In the above scenario, I'm not necessarily saying that AA7 would be a Switch 2 exclusive - because I think that would be stupid after so much of the support they've gotten from the ports has been from playstation and steam - but I am definitely the kind of person who would buy a console for one video game. Shoutout to me buying a switch in part anticipating that aa7 would come out on it and that is not looking likely
Anyways, that's my speculation!! Reminder that this is mostly uninformed and that I have no knowledge of anything related to sales or marketing or video game development, and as a result of that, I have been wrong (aside from the one time I accurately predicted AAI ports as a joke) for four consecutive years.

Dollarama has reached a $2.5 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit over the advertising of prices on its products. LPC Avocats Inc., a law firm in Montreal, announced Tuesday that the deal was reached in Superior Court. The plaintiff had alleged that the company did not properly advertise the price of certain products for sale that were subject to an Environmental Handling Fee (EHF). Under the terms of the agreement, anyone who purchased batteries, lightbulbs, toys and other items that were subject to the EHF in Quebec between Dec. 11, 2019 and July 4, 2023, or elsewhere in Canada between April 29, 2021 and July 4, 2023, is entitled to compensation.

TS Film Thoughts Masterpost
As promised.
Let's start things off -
Breaking News - Headlines about the film
Dec 9 2022 - her film contract makes headlines
Tumblr media
From what I can find, this is the first that anyone knows she is producing a film. There are no details released other than it's a script she wrote and she will be directing the film.
The next we hear is Dec 7, 2023 from the Tennessean --
Tumblr media
It's been crickets, essentially. There are no public details I can find about the film anywhere including cast list, release date, content, ETC.
Interestingly, two days ago -- though uncertain of validity of source -
Tumblr media
I don't have access to puck so cannot confirm what the article says; but this was recent! So; in theory, she finishes her Eras tour and moves directly in to film.
More on how Disney+ ties in our next section...
Who is Searchlight Pictures?
Created April 29, 1994 - formerly known as Fox Searchlight/under 20th/21st Century Fox
Biggest success: Slumdog Millionaire 187 Academy Ward Nominations with 46 wins; 5 Best Picture since 2009 117 Golden Globe Nominations; 51 wins 66 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations; 55 wins 137 Independent Spirit Awards, 54 Wins
Other Notable Films: 12 Years A Slave; Black Swan; Napoleon Dynamite;
20th century fox, prior to the creation of Searchlight, was prominent in the specialty and independent films market in the 1990s; it carried this interest into Searchlight, at least initially.
In 2012, it was incorporated into Murdoch's 21st Century Fox. Barf.
On Dec 14, 2017 Disney put their first bid out on 21st Century Fox/Fox Searchlight. On March 19, 2019 the companies merged and Disney acquired Fox Searchlight; Fox News notoriously split independently. Disney dropped the name Fox; so now we have just Searchlight Pictures. There is also a Searchlight Pictures TV and shorts production, which for the sake of time I will not get into.
For Funsies, here is a short film (Jun 18 2019, after Disney acquired) produced by them called....LAVENDER. About a gay man who has a relationship with a married gay couple. Can't make it up.
Anyway, since merging with Disney especially, the company seems to be LGBTQ friendly.
And yes, Joe Alwyn has worked with Searchlight, with tweets I found dating back to 2018 with Searchlight UK. Make of that what you would like, I have no real objective commentary on the matter.
Taylor as a Director
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She also directed the Long Pond Studio Sessions and Miss Americana.
Most of her directorial work has been since the Lover debut. Most of which is very queer coded/sapphic.. and again, make of that what you will.
Appearances/Pap Walks, ETC
Since her split from JA, we have seen her with multiple friends in the film industry. Among these: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, Keleigh Teller, Miles Teller, Sophie Turner, Emma Stone...
And dare I say.... Travis Kelce, who seems to want to break his way into the entertainment industry?
Tumblr media
(aside from this headline; his failed dating show, his podcast, his multiple PR deals like with ZenWater... etc. I rest my case).
We also know there has been some B roll footage taken at the Chiefs Games.
Additionally, the media coverage of this relationship has been an absolute f*cking circus; with constant headlines of the two and their "engagement" / relationship dynamics. On Taylor's end, we have had constant references to Bejeweled (where she Ghosts); including Keleigh Teller giving her the opal ring.
The Speculation
Yall, this is my opinion - you can agree, disagree, etc; but I have no insider information. Just thoughts.
She makes her film directorial debut with Searchlight - recently acquired by Disney, who is pro-LGBTQ; and is clearly in deep with business deals with them, as seen on Taylor Nation and her Eras Tour Film.
We have rumors of her beginning her film production at the end of the ERAS tour, along with knowledge of her currently with B roll footage from chiefs games. We have multiple highly papp'ed appearances with her + TK; but also with multiple film stars, including Blake Lively (still not over that photo), Sophie Turner (I do think there's altruism here tbh on TS's end), and Keleigh. If you believe Keleigh is her stand in invisible bride.... Holy shit. Between the opal ring shutdown of the media circus as well as her and TS literally taking a page out of TSHOEH and dressing in character...
My ultimate suspicion is that she's using actual experiences of her current life-highly papp'ed - to tell her story. And that Keleigh is her stand in muse in this film.
I also think the @spade-riddles we've been getting about a final act ending, etc, pertain to her film. I don't have evidence aside from speculation.
I rest my case. Enjoy this post and make of it what you will.

Spike It, Baby šŸ | Javy 'Coyote' Machado Headcanon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TGM Masterlist | Content Warnings: slight canon divergence
Being a professional beach volleyball player for Team USA and marrying Javy Machado would look like:
Having grown up in Santa Monica, California in the 90s & 2000s, you learned to play beach volleyball before riding a bike. Both your parents were athletes, your mother a beach volleyball player who made it to the 1996 and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games when you were only a child. Watching her inspired you to continue the legacy, the goal of becoming an Olympian on your mind.Ā
You'd already been in the circuit and playing for Team USA when you met Javy in 2012 during your junior year of college. He'd just graduated from flying school, celebrating in Los Angeles before having to report to his duty station when he stumbled upon your NCAA tournament at the beach. The pilot pretty much falling in love with you right there as he saw you deliver the winning spike. Jumping for joy in the sand with your partner as y'all received the trophy.Ā
At the bar that night you two ran into each other, Javy offering to buy you a drink which you accepted. The two of you sitting on the outside porch where you talked theĀ entire night. Not wanting to depart even when your friend groups were ready to leave. When it did come time to, numbers were exchanged with the promise of meeting up for a coffee or dinner. For you, it was a double win that day--securing the tournament trophy and a date with a handsome pilot.Ā
As your relationship progressed, a lot of time was spent a part for various reasons. Javy running missions, leading to his first assignment at Top Gun in 2014 before settling at Lemoore where he met Jake. You had tournaments throughout the year, both stateside and international. Your man--and sometimes Jake--made sure to be at every US tournament you competed it, the loudest in the stands where he was decked out in a t-shirt with you and your partner on it. "Let's go, baby! Show them how it's done" *whistles* "Best spike in the country--full of fire!"
Qualifying for the Rio Olympics was a dream come true. Falling to the sand on your knees after scoring the winning point with your signature spike. Javy and Jake were losing in their minds in the stands, the former in tears and wishing nothing more than to jump the barricade to hug you. Your partner was screaming, y'all's coaches clutched in a group hug. It was a memorable sight. You mother, the 2x Olympian, was a mess as well- considering your debut games marked the 20th anniversary of her debut.Ā
The Rio Olympics was the experience of a lifetime. Not to mention aĀ silver lining moment for you and your partner. After a spectacular run in your pool play, following a successful quarterfinal, you faced off against the other team from USA, the 3x Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and her partner April Ross. In a breathtaking match, leaving spectators in the stadium and watching around the world on the edge of their seats, you scored the winning point to send you both into the gold medal match. "Wow, wow, wow! Unbelievable! The #1 team in the world--Walsh Jennings & Ross--have been knocked out of the finals by their fellow Americans. They will go for the Bronze against the Brazilians, while the duo from Santa Monica, California will face off against the Germans."Ā
Despite losing the gold, you walked away with a silver medal and that in itself is an accomplishment. After all, you achieved your childhood dream of becoming an Olympian, continuing the legacy of your mother. Still, it wasn't over yet. You and your partner got back to the beach with your team and dominated the 2017-2019 seasons. Javy, your main supporter alongside your family, proposed and the two of you got married--on the beach of course. There were times him and Jake challenged you and your partner to a match. They were rusty in the beginning, but soon the pilots got pretty good after several games. You can expect them to kick ass against their coworkers. "Where the hell did you learn to do that, Machado? How are you guys so damn good at this?"Ā Jake would smirk and nudge Javy, "What, have you been living under a rock? His woman is the best beach volleyball player in the country."
Following the success of the Uranium mission in 2019--which had you deathly afraid of losing Javy---the candidates became a little family. By now your relationship with Javy was known to his colleagues, not to mention your success in the world of sports drew a large following. People came up to you at the beach or stopped you on the sidewalk to asks for pictures. Natives of California in the Navy recognized Javy, "Hey, your wife won silver at the Olympics!" "That's right she did. And she's gonna get the gold this year at Tokyo--I know it."
The first time Maverick saw you play, he couldn't help but think back to his time at Top Gun. Where he and Goose played against Ice and Slider. The memory bringing a smile to his face as he watched you and Pheonix play against Javy and Jake. The boys complaining of Pete's calls as refs, citing he was favoring you and Monica. "That was totally out of bounds!" "Not from what I saw, sport."
Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the Tokyo Games to be postponed a whole year, and when they finally came it was ruled only coaches and athletes were to attend. No spectators. That meant Javy, your family, and the squad had to watch from Fightertown. It was like Deja vu when you made it to the gold medal match, facing your fellow teammates of USA again. You can expect the Hard Deck to explode when you delivered the match point, securing the gold medal with a beautiful spike, sending the ball into the sand to fast the other team had no time to react. "She did it! She fucking did it!! My baby is an Olympic Champion--Penny ring the bell!!"Ā Yeah, you could hear the squad's cheers and screams miles down.Ā
When you touched back down on U.S soil, you sprint across the airport to jump into Javy's arms, cameras from the photographers flashing and the welcoming crowd cheering. Javy spinning you around, the rest of the squad joining your hug with flags waving in the background. As per tradition, you placed your gold medal around Javy and your parents, who all were beaming with pride. "Damn this is heavy." "The weight of a champion in the palm of your hand."Ā
The legacy of your golden run in the sport of beach volleyball would continue to the city of Paris. Where you became a 2x champion with not only your husband and parents in the crowd, but also your two-year-old daughter. Not losing a set the entire games, a beautiful scene with the Eiffel Tower sparkling down upon the stadium. Then four years later, in the Hollywood lights of Los Angeles--miles away from the place that started it all, you ended your career with another gold draped around your neck. Where your daughter witnessed you be crowned once more as the champion of women's beach volleyball, sparking the moment she became consumed with the dream of Olympic glory.Ā
"Mommy, I want to be like you when I grow up."Ā "Well, you can do anything once you put your mind to it. All you have to do is set it in your sights, and spike it, baby."Ā

ā€œHoly shit they actually froggin did itā€: A Keroro Gunso anime revival preliminary info and speculation post (late as hell edition)
Okay first of all,
Tumblr media
AWAKEN
Thatā€™s right, vanished-into-the-void bastard Kirb here, I am an alive person still, though Iā€™m certain a lot of stuff on this blog is horrifically outdated. Donā€™t get too used to my presence, Iā€™m a whole ass adult with a 9-to-5 now and donā€™t really have the energy to put into consistently maintaining this account, at least not to the degree that I used to (took me well over a whole ass MONTH just to write this post). However, Iā€™ve returned for a special occasion, as basically anyone still in this fandom is already aware considering itā€™s been forever now:
We are so fucking back
youtube
It took thirteen years and counting, but here we are, a brand new Keroro anime project is in the worksā€”no ā€œthe short anime of all timeā€ Flash series here, this is the real deal, straight out of 2004ā€“2011, and goddamn is it beautiful. I mightā€™ve been off the mark when I called it for the 15th anniversary, but itā€™s now the 20th, five years later, and the madmen did what was once thought impossible by many.
So letā€™s break down what the hell is actually going on here, because when this got revealed last month, Keroro fans on all sides of the globe basically started collectively running around like headless chickens. Iā€™m gonna divide this aggregation post into the following sections:
Where did this even come from
Clearing up misconceptions
Okay so like what is ā€œā€œā€œProjectā€ā€ā€
Collection of statements from official accounts, staff and cast, etc.
The Localization Question (TM)
Miscellaneous thoughts that donā€™t really fit anywhere else
I was originally going to make this a living document of sorts but some small stuff has already happened since I started drafting this the day after the reveal happened, so this should be it for the time being. Itā€™s a hefty enough post as is. I am just a master procrastinator :V
That takes care of all the goofy intro nonsense, now for the parts you actually want to read, starting underneath the cut!
Section 1: The Signs Were There
As previously stated, 2024 is the 20th anniversary of the Keroro anime, along with the 25th anniversary of the mangaā€™s serialization but apprently even they donā€™t care about that since theyā€™ve made no fanfare around it whatsoever, unlike the joint 15th & 20th anniversary back in 2019. Maybe they will as we get closer to the manga anniversary in November, but for now-obvious reasons the anime has been overshadowing the manga side by a lot.
If youā€™ve been monitoring the Keroro PR account on Twitter (you bet your ass Iā€™m still calling it that) youā€™ll have noticed an increasing output of Stuff over the last year or two, even compared to the prior anniversary. These include but are not limited to:
In 2021, the series opened an official YouTube Channel, where theyā€™ve been doing reruns of the anime (region locked to Japan), PR podcasts, etc. Itā€™s also where the revival announcement premiered on April 1 at midnight JST.
In 2023, the series opened an official Fan Club with a paid membership. Originally it was a temporary project meant to last for only the two anniversary years (2023 for the pilot oneshotā€™s anniversary, and 2024 for the anime/manga), but was ultimately extended indefinitely due to ā€œgood receptionā€ (my guess is it was always planned to be more than two years but they didnā€™t want to make it too easy to guess as early as last year that the anime was returning lol). They have a merch store, giveaways, and some kind of social component. I donā€™t know much about it otherwise because itā€™s a paid membership that I donā€™t have access to.
The series has had an overall increase in merchandise and collabs since 2022 or so. This has pretty much always been the case, but there was a bit of a lull between the Flash series ending and the ramp-up period to this (Iā€™d start at 2021 when the YouTube channel opened). Save for the 15th/20th stuff in 2019, for which the major project was Keroro UC, a spinoff manga/plamo line that justā€¦never released all the models and has never been brought up again. Guess it didnā€™t do very well :V
A number of international releases/rereleases happened as well, but Iā€™ll get into that a little bit more in its dedicated section. For now letā€™s just say that the anime being finally licensed and put up on streaming in North America may indicate the new series will be English translated in some capacity. Itā€™s also made a resurgence in Korea, its biggest market outside Japan, where itā€™s had new exhibitions and collab cafes, a redub (that only got through 2 seasons I think), and even a new mobile game.
And finally, a week or so before the announcement, a new Twitter account was created specifically for the anime side of the brand. I think this was really the big tip-off, as Keroro PR has been the hub for all things related to the franchise for the last nearly 15 years, even when the original anime itself was still running during Twitterā€™s infancy. Keroro PR has posted everything for every other anime anniversary. The fact that now all of a sudden they had to sector off the anime stuff into its own account made it clear something bigger was going on. (Accordingly, the Keroro Anime account has labeled Keroro PR the ā€œoriginal workā€ account, AKA the manga side of things.)
Essentially I think theyā€™ve been planning this to some degree since as long ago as 2021, the first time the president of Bandai Namco Pictures (animation studio comprised of Sunrise staff that took over the Keroro IP in 2015 and are now producing the new anime) openly acknowledged the possibility. Iā€™ll just link my own tweet with the translation of his statement here. This was right around the opening of the YouTube channel, so I donā€™t think itā€™s a coincidence.
tl;dr Momentum for the anime component of the franchise has been building for the past couple of years pointing toward a new anime around the 20th anniversary, so I wouldnā€™t say this comes off as a huge surprise, though I was expecting something smaller scale than what we might be getting (more on that in the ā€œwhat is thisā€ section).
Section 2: No Itā€™s Not April Fools, Guys, Plus Other Clarifications
With the announcement spreading across the internet, Iā€™ve seen a few points of confusion going around that Iā€™d like to clear up before I go any further.
As Iā€™ve made clear in the section title, yes the new anime was revealed on April 1, no this is not a prank. A lot of Japanese companies do post April Fools pranks, but keep in mind April also marks the start of the new fiscal year in Japan, so many legitimate announcements are made as well. Plus, the original animeā€™s exact anniversary was on April 3, just a couple of days after the announcement.
Iā€™ve seen a lot of people call this a new series, season, etc., but officially, the only term used to describe this so far is ā€œnew anime projectā€. That could mean literally anything, from TV series to movie to ONA and so on. I am leaning closer to a certain interpretation, which is what the entire next section is for, but for the time being, calling it anything other than ā€œnew animeā€ is technically not concrete info.
There seems to be a little bit of confusion on what studio is working on this, but in short: it's Bandai Namco Pictures (BN Pictures or BNP for short). As previously mentioned, this is the studio that inherited the Keroro IP when it spun off from Sunrise in 2015. Sunrise, the anime's original studio, is now a brand name for the larger anime management company Bandai Namco Filmworks. Although they've held the IP for almost a decade, this is the first time they've really gotten to do anything with it besides merchandise licensing and some anti-piracy commercial from a few years ago that theyā€™ve ironically scrubbed from the internet now. If you've seen the name Studio BIND (Mushoku Tensei, Onimai) floating around, they're assisting with the production but are not the primary animation studio. Of course this is all assuming this setup continues on to the final project and not just for the PV, but I see no reason to assume otherwise at the moment. It would be rather unusual for BNP to outsource anything if it was solely for a 30 second trailer.
I think that does it for the main points of contention I wanted to address for now, so moving on to the thing we all really want to knowā€¦
Section 3: Okay But What Is It Actually???
Well, as I said in the previous sectionā€”we don't know, lol. At least not officially. But if we put our thinking caps on, we can make a few deductions:
The anime project will be broadcast on TV. In other words, it won't be an ONA (original net animation). This is determined based on the fact that TV Tokyo, the network the original anime aired on, is on the production committee. For those who don't know, a production committee for an anime is the collection of parties/companies who contribute to the production and funding of the anime. For comparison, the Keroro Flash Series, which aired only on the TV channel Animax to accompany a dedicated timeslot for the original anime reruns, did not have TV Tokyo in its committee. So, it will likely air on TV Tokyo once again.
It's (probably) not a movie. This is going to be more evidenced by point 3 than anything, but BNP has been pretty clear about when something is a movie specifically in the past, such as when Kaiketsu Zorori had various feature films in the 2010s before getting an actual TV anime revival in 2020. Still, we can't be 100% sure until someone directly says otherwise.
It's going to be more than a one-off. I will post the statement in full in the next section, but the Keroro PR account uses specific wording (ā€œresumption,ā€ ā€œnew start,ā€ etc.) that sounds very much like theyā€™re making a longer term commitment, so this is straight from the horseā€™s mouth, essentially.
The series will be a continuation of the 2004-2011 series rather than a reboot. This oneā€™s probably my flimsiest prediction as the PR statements sort of obfuscate whether itā€™s one or the other, but the character bios section on the new anime portal site gives away a big hint: the Garuru Platoon, Pururu included, is there. This means that we can reason that, at minimum, all or part of Season 3 has already occurred. The character bios themselves also summarize things that werenā€™t revealed until a little while into the show, such as how Momoka and Tamama met. That all said, the Garuru Platoon members do not have bios, so I suppose they want to keep whatā€™s being done with them a bit of a secret; perhaps they intend to reintroduce them with some kind of dramatic arc again. Either way, if the series does retread/retell some old material, it probably wonā€™t be the bulk of the story. This makes sense to me, as itā€™s not like the show has been so hard to find in the last decade that a reboot is necessary to get a modern audience on boardā€”it reruns constantly on kidsā€™ TV channels like the Japanese version of Cartoon Network, is available in full on multiple streaming platforms (movies included), and is now on its second rebroadcast of the whole series episode by episode on the YouTube Channel. Unless youā€™re a literal toddler, if youā€™re interested in the series, youā€™ve probably watched at least some of it already.
In conclusion, based on the above (admittedly sparse) evidence, I am inclined to believe the new anime project is a TV series that will air on TV Tokyo as the 2004 anime did and will be a continuation rather than a reboot; however, there is no way to determine episode length, episode count, etc. at this time. It could be a cour (for those who don't know anime, "cour" is your average 12-episode season), it could be consecutive cours, it could be split cour (in other words, goes on break for a season before returning), it could even be a year-round anime if they really wanna go all the way with it. Granted, I hesitate to believe that they would do the latter simply due to the nature of anime production these days, and as far as I know, BNP has not done a single year-round airing since its founding. Even the aforementioned Kaiketsu Zorori revival was a two cour (24-25 eps) series each year from 2020-2022. My guess is we're looking at something similar here, but Keroro is a pretty big deal, so could they make an exception? Maybe, but this setup would already lead to more episodes than the vast majority of anime these days, so it would still be plenty enough to be happy with.
Considering all this and the list of numerous hints that we were potentially getting a new anime as far back as three years ago as bulleted in Section 1, you might question what made me doubt that it could be a series in the first place. Well, besides just the series being so old and it being so long since the anime ended that it felt a little like wishful thinking, at least three members of the cast said that a new series was not something they were specifically looking to do...I think, anyway. Let me explain.
Last year, on December 9, a Keroro birthday event with Kumiko Watanabe (Keroro), Etsuko Kozakura (Tamama), and Takeshi Kusao (Dororo) was hosted in person and livestreamed on TwitCast for fans that paid for a ticket. There were two timeslots for the in person event, and only the evening show was streamed, with the afternoon one being in person only. Now that I have adult money, and being the impulse driven gremlin that I am, I paid for the virtual ticket. Most of it was just cute little segments like the three cast members doing live commentary on some of the birthday episodes, discussing the results of a ā€œfavorite lines from their charactersā€ poll hosted on Twitter a few weeks before the event, and a brief visit from Jashin-chan of Jashin-chan Dropkick/Dropkick on My Devil, a series that Keroro recently collabed with for a series of merchandise. Unfortunately the event wasn't archived publicly and they specifically asked to not upload materials to social media, and I'd like to respect that request mostly out of consideration for the cast, so you will just have to take my word for it :P (besides those who were watching me talk about it in real time on discord).
The reason I'm going on this tangent is because, at the end of the stream, a special prerecorded video featuring the three cast members was shown exclusively for virtual attendees. In it they essentially explained that they still greatly enjoy the characters/series and would love to partake in more events and projects, but "not necessarily a new series." I promise you I listened to this clip over and over the entire time it was available and that's what I heard. Now look, the room they recorded this in was echo-y, and my Japanese is pretty decent (enough for my N2 anyways, yeah I did that while I was away from here clap clap) but listening comprehension is my weaker area, so maybe I just take a massive L here. When I started writing this post there was a sentence here guessing about whether they were just being cheeky or didnā€™t know yet, but an interview came out last month that gave whatā€™s all but a conclusive answer to that. More on it in the next section but tl;dr, they likely did not know it was happening at all. Well, at least they got to be as surprised as we were :V
Anyways now that the thing has been revealed none of the last two paragraphs even matter, so I just prattled on for no reason besides to admit my own shame. Next bit.
Section 4: SAUCE PLOX??? (Current testimonies from relevant people/entities)
Naturally, when the trailer dropped, we got a pretty decent handful of comments from whatever staff and cast are on social media. Most of these are just people going ā€œyay weā€™re back hooray!ā€ (paraphrased) but the Keroro PR account statements are actually kinda sorta hints? So Iā€™ll start out with those. Thereā€™s two tweets that I want to highlight here:
First is from April 1 (JST), the day of the reveal. In this tweet the account wishes everyone well for the new school/fiscal year, but the important part is the last sentence, This can be translated any number of ways (thanks to yoroshiku onegaishimasu and its 50 potential meanings, every Japanese translatorā€™s worst nightmare), but essentially itā€™s something along the lines of ā€œwe hope youā€™ll support the restart/resumption of the Keroro anime for a long time to come.ā€
The keywords here are obvious: 再始動 (saishidou) meaning either restart or resumption. I know youā€™re probably thinking those are two very different things, but the nuance here is that itā€™s more of a restart in production than restart of the continuity. For the latter, I think itā€™s more common to see ćƒŖćƒ”ć‚¤ć‚Æ, which is just the English word ā€œremakeā€ in katakana. Worth noting that the Flash anime used none of these words in its marketing, but it did use language such as ā€œbrand new invasion plan,ā€ ā€œrebirth of Keroro,ā€ and so onā€¦in addition to, you know, having a completely different artstyle and a title change to just ā€œKeroroā€, which this clearly does not (the artstyle is relatively faithful to the old one and the project is under the original Keroro Gunso name).
The other big word is ęœ«ę°ø恏(suenagaku), whichā€¦also doesnā€™t have one exact translation, but implies somewhere between years or even an indefinite period of time. I didnā€™t want to say a specific unit of time in my translation of the statement because well, we canā€™t really be sure of anything here, but either way, theyā€™re signaling that theyā€™re most likely in it for the long haul.
Then thereā€™s the tweet from the PR account commemorating the actual anniversary of the original anime (April 3). This one uses ę–°ć—ć„ć‚¹ć‚æćƒ¼ćƒˆ, ā€œnew startā€ā€”no real multiple definition shenanigans here, this is about as literal and straightforward as you can get. In terms of the reboot or not question, this could lean either way, but it definitely adds to theory that it is a series of some sort.
Okay, thatā€™s all for the individual tweets Iā€™m gonna totally overanalyze, otherwise Iā€™d be stuck here for even longer than I already have been. Hereā€™s a quick list of involved staff who tweeted about the reveal:
Unsurprisingly, Kumiko Watanabe (Keroro) posted that day, reiterating that it is real and saying ā€œbelieve usssss!ā€ (As a reminder, half the internet was convinced it was April Fools for like a whole week)
Adding to the cast comments, Etsuko Kozakura (Tamama) says, ā€œWhoo-hoo! Canā€™t wait for more news! Keroro Gunso is still the greatest!!ā€
Jouji Nakata (Giroro) didnā€™t make a specific comment about the trailer, but has been retweeting the other official accounts and such and replying about it, so he has acknowledged it otherwise. As a substitute, hereā€™s a picture of him visiting the Keroro Exhbition in Ikebukuro a day early.
Hereā€™s an interesting oneā€”Haruna Ikezawa (Momoka) said about the trailer, ā€œReally?! Is this real?!?!?!ā€ While no cast members outside of the Keroro Platoon were officially revealed to be reprising their roles, Iā€™m assuming theyā€™re going to try their best to reassemble as much of the cast as of season 7 as possibleā€”besides Keiji Fujiwara (Paul/Narrator), who sadly passed away in 2020ā€”so I kind of figured Ikezawa would know about this, but maybe notā€¦? Well, considering that the main five were completely blindsided by this to the point where they werenā€™t even sure this was a real thing until they were in the middle of recording it (as I said previously, more on that later), I suppose the other cast members were just. Not told. I donā€™t really doubt Ikezawa would return (she even stated it could happen someday all the way back when the then-final season ended in 2011 and did come back for Flash)ā€¦but unless they were like really worried about leaks why even keep them in the dark to learn with the rest of the public, idk man :V (so much for not overanalyzing tweets huh)
On to production staff now, hereā€™s the tweet from Satoshi Koike, animation director of the latter third of the original and also the reveal trailer, indicating that heā€™s most likely back for the new project. Itā€™s just a simple ā€œWelcome back! (de arimasu)ā€ but the images he used were drawn back in 2019 to commemorate the start of the Reiwa era, spoofing the original lyrics of the first opening. The reveal trailer tweet itself from the Keroro Anime account does this too (ā€œStarting today, the Reiwa era shall be known as the Keroro era!ā€).
New to the staff is Jouji Furuta (yes we have two Joujis now har har), who did the storyboards and direction for the trailer. Heā€™s relatively new to the scene as a whole, with his most well known project being Shaman King Flowers. Although he never worked on the series before, he did a pretty good job emulating the original, and based on the last line of the tweet, it seems like he will be staying on for the full project as well.
And now for a kind of weird section where I talk about the few related accounts that the Keroro anime twitter is following but havenā€™t made any kind of verbal acknowledgement yet.
First and foremost is Mine Yoshizakiā€”you know, the guy who created the fucking series, whose name is on the copyright string and whose explicit permission they had to get to do another anime in the first place? Yeah so itā€™s been over a month since the reveal now and there has been zero acknowledgement from him. I do know his personal social media account has been inactive for quite a few years now (I feel like the anime account is only even following it for symbolic reasons), but he had multiple other opportunities to say something at this point. He did contribute some signed artwork to the anime-focused exhibition that just ended but nowhere in it does he directly mention the new adaptation, and so far he hasnā€™t commented on it in Shonen Ace (maybe in the next volume, assuming thatā€™s soonish). I have my theories about his relationship to the anime, especially now that the Kemono Friends fiasco has occurred, but thatā€™s all a story for another day or never. Iā€™m sure heā€™ll contribute something later, but even so itā€™s just really bizarre to have nothing to say about your biggest creationā€™s first new adaptation in over a decade. Oh well.
Character designer Fumitoshi Oizaki, who has been around since the beginning if I remember correctly, has been retweeting things, but no official comment just yet. (He discretely left a message at the expo apparently, but didnā€™t post it online, so no idea if it mentions the new anime.) He isnā€™t credited on the trailer, but considering heā€™s still been pretty involved with the franchiseā€™s promotion over the last few years, I would be very surprised if he wasnā€™t returning.
Last but certainly not least is Junichi Sato, the chief director for the original anime for the first two seasons, arguably its most well-known and critically praised era. Heā€™s also a very notable director in his own right, having headed other famous series like early Sailor Moon and Ojamajo Doremi. Sato didnā€™t direct the original anime for the majority of its runtime (though he did direct the first four movies), but he still directs and storyboards on projects to this day, including for other franchisesā€™ major anniversaries (namely Doremi and Precure). Though not certain, I think itā€™s very possible that he returns for this in some capacity, if not as director than perhaps for storyboarding or general advising.
To close out the testimony section, Iā€™m going to share here the translation I did of the aforementioned interview with Kumiko Watanabe in last monthā€™s issue of Newtype (anime-centric magazine published by Kadokawa). I wonā€™t re-summarize it here since itā€™s not particularly long, but the main takeaways from this in terms of hints as to what we can expect are that a) the cast was surprised by this and potentially didnā€™t even know back in December when they last discussed the possibility of working on Keroro again, and b) as I previously speculated, this is going to be a long term enough project that at least Watanabe feels the need to physically prepare for it lol. And thankfully, it seems theyā€™re all excited to go back to the series. I spent a long time thinking they might not be up to it again since itā€™s been so long and theyā€™re much later in their lives/careers (Nakata just turned 70 oh man) but Iā€™m glad I was wrong! Though I donā€™t expect this to be another 300 episode commitment anyway; in spite of the PR comments I donā€™t think weā€™re going for that long with the nature of anime production these days lmao.
And now for a topic which I think many of you are concerned aboutā€¦
Section 5: ā€œBut what if my ę—„ęœ¬čŖž is not äøŠę‰‹???ā€ (The Localization Question)
ļæ¼If you did not get the joke in the above headline without looking it up, itā€™s probably safe to assume that if you want to watch this Thing, you will need it in a language other than Japanese (and even if you did get the joke you will know if you are truly ę—„ęœ¬čŖžäøŠę‰‹ when people stop saying ę—„ęœ¬čŖžäøŠę‰‹ to you). Iā€™m going to focus on English for this post since thatā€™s the primary language of the audience here, though I would be very shocked if there isnā€™t at minimum a Korean translationā€”dub more likely than sub imo, since the most famous version of the show there had different names for the characters and was changed to be set in Korea, and the series is HUGE there to the point where it almost rivals the Japanese market.
So, English. Well, if it were a few years ago (say, if this came during the 15th anniversary like I was originally coping over), I would be markedly less optimistic about getting any official translation at all. At that time, the dub was explicitly dead and the only English sub had been delisted for a few years, and even that was only available in a select few countries in Continental Europe on a pretty obscure streaming service called Viewster for like a year or two before getting pulled. Itā€™s no surprise that this particular sub eventually became more well known as the subs on the torrents compiled by ColdFusion (whoever that was, Iā€™m still not sure myself). That was untilā€¦
ā€¦the magical year of 2021, when our heroes at Discotek licensed the ENTIRE SERIES (minus the movies) for an official English release using Viewsterā€™s existing translations! Thatā€™s right, we got all of it. And not only that, the whole series was also added to Crunchyroll, though only the sub; Discotek had the Funimation dub but it seems it did not get ported to Crunchyroll when the merger happened this year. It does seem that Crunchy has still not made the series available outside of the US and Canada, which is a shame, but man is it still surreal to have the entire series legally available both digitally and physically after nearly two decades of scattered fansubs and hardly accessible official releases. Surely this was a huge win for Discotek, right?
Weeeeeellā€¦no. Of course they werenā€™t able to say it out loud, but itā€™s been extremely heavily implied that unfortunately the BluRay/DVD releases flopped for them, and they did say they definitely wonā€™t be getting the movies or the Flash series. They also stopped releasing the discs on a one season a year basis and started bundling them together, with seasons 5ā€“7 coming out all at once later this year, so theyā€™re clearly trying to just get it off their plates. To be honest, this was pretty predictable becauseā€¦itā€™s been on Crunchyroll since before the discs even came out. Look, physical media is super cool and all, but who in this economy is going to pay $40-60 per box for a handful of seasons at most when they can get the whole damn thing on their phone for like $8 a month. Crunchyroll isnā€™t necessarily a disc killer; their release of Digimon Adventure, for example, still seemingly did well despite that series being available on Crunchyroll two years prior, but in addition to Digimon being more popular in the west, itā€™s one $60 purchase for the whole series versus having to spend like over $200 for 358 episodes. I applaud them for rolling the dice and trying to get this behemoth of a release out there, but Iā€™m not surprised about the lack of financial returns.
However, since Crunchyroll now has set a precedent of having the original series available on their platform, we just might get the new series available on there as wellā€”if not as a simulsub, then at least dropped in batches later on. Iā€™m not 100% confident in this, particularly because technically Discotek still holds the license, but my guess based on the way theyā€™ve talked about the series is that theyā€™re pretty open to someone else taking it off their hands when theyā€™re done releasing the original series (and the translations werenā€™t originally theirs to begin with anyways, they purchased them and did some touch-ups to the existing translation with added typesetting). As far as simulsubs go, the kidsā€™ shows that get simulsubbed tend to be from Toei, with whom Crunchyroll has a known partnership. But if it is split into cours rather than being a year-round anime, I think the chances of a simulsub go up. Whatever the case may be, itā€™s for sure in a better position to get an official subtitled release than it ever was before. Iā€™m certainly praying this happens because I believe most of the people capable of fansubbing (with good translation anyway) have gradually moved away from the fandom over the last decade for various reasonsā€”myself included, though mostly I just quit fansubbing/scanlation in general for Personal Reasons(TM). Fingers crossed, everyone.
So subs remain as a not-guaranteed-but- definitely-not-low possibility. But what about a dub? If you recall, Keroro has had a very rocky history in 3D with English dubs, with the American dub being in licensing hell for years before finally falling into Funimationā€™s lap and subsequently failing to take off despite remaining a beloved cult classic to Some Fans (I am not as high on it, but longtime Kirb followers probably know that by now), and the only other English dub is relegated to the network Animax in Hong Kong + Southeast Asia with no official home release, leaving all of it besides parts of seasons 3 and 4 as lost media (and the voice acting sucked ass but at least the script was accurate). But weā€™re not in the mid 2000s to early 2010s anymore; this is the screaminā€™ ā€™20s, baby! So much anime is getting dubbed now, sometimes at almost the same time as the Japanese release! There must be a chance, right?!
Eeeehhhhhh I wouldnā€™t bet on it. Even the Toei kidsā€™ shows Crunchyroll started simulsubbing usually donā€™t get dubs (Digimon is an exception, and the rebootā€™s dub took YEARS to come out). Anime dubs, as far as Iā€™m aware, are not cheap to produce (though itā€™d be great if more of what the companies are pocketing went to the actorsā€™ wages >_>), and if the show does have the potential to become somewhat of a long runner, I think theyā€™ll need to see more interest around the IP to fund one, and both Funimation and now Discotekā€™s releases have proved that the audience for it isnā€™t always there. I also speculate theyā€™d be doing a lot of recasting; the casting process is not as smooth and (I believe) more expensive than it is in Japan, and a lot of the original cast are not working as often in the field anymore and/or have been involved with some pretty serious controversiesā€”Iā€™m sure those in the know are thinking of a specific drawn-out conflict but Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s more than just About Him at this point. So letā€™s just say that while some of the cast still remembers the show fondly, I think trying to get them all in the same project again would potentially open some cans of worms better off left closed. Itā€™s not 100% impossible it gets dubbed, you never know what the industry can manage to make work these days, but Iā€™d wager itā€™s like 90% not happening. Just a hunch. If anyone more knowledgable than me on anime localization (this goes for both the dub and sub stuff) would like to argue me with better explanations than I have Iā€™d very much be glad to hear it.
Section 6: The Stuff That Doesnā€™t Fit Elsewhere + Final Thoughts
Thereā€™s not going to be any real organization to this section. Hereā€™s just some bullets of miscellaneous stream of consciousness thoughts related to whatever:
The character bios page on the site linked in section 3 has some WEIRD romanization choices. I donā€™t expect these to reflect on any official localization because chances are theyā€™ll go with what Viewster used, which is largely what the fandom is used to besides the Kululu/Kururu split. It is indeed Kululu here and Kululu has been the de facto official spelling for a very very long time now but I still have a personal preference for Kururu because ā€œKululuā€ loses the onomatopoeia joke and Iā€™m a rebel. But like. ā€œTololoā€? Since when has Tororo ever been called that in any media? And worst of all, ā€œPoleā€? POLE?? Thatā€™s literally never been a thing what glossary did they pull these from.
Also worth noting, Alisa and the Narrator had merchandise sold at the Keroro expo (will talk about that next btw) despite not being on the characters page. This isnā€™t a confirmation of anything but I would be very surprised if Alisa doesnā€™t return at some point since she was pretty prominent later in the show and Yoshizaki seems to have a particular fondness for her, and the Narrator will obviously be there with a recast, though juryā€™s out on if his little ā€™sona guy will show up too. It wonā€™t be the same without Fujiwara :(
I do want to touch upon the ā€œKeroro expoā€, officially known as the ā€œKeroro Gunso Super Gerogero Museumā€ (expo is a fine shorthand because the Japanese word can mean exhibition also), since Iā€™ve mentioned it a couple times throughout this write-up. This was an event that was held in Ikebukuro just recently from April 27ā€“May 12 that was basically a walkthrough experience recreating settings from the anime, having artwork and stuff sprinkled in between (all reused, no new concept art or anything sadly). The main gimmick was that the venue had an exclusive app that let you take AR pictures with models of the Keroro Platoon. It also had an AI chatbot feature where you could talk to each member of the platoon, and not too many posted pictures of this feature but apparently the chatbots were uhhhhhh weird. I have no idea how much of it is generative from other LLMs, and Iā€™m assuming they programmed it at least partially with their own original input/databases (which is the only way to make generative AI even close to ethical), but from the few screenshots Iā€™ve seen their speech was just a little bit awkward and some of the stuff they said was really bizarre. At one point users started to turn it into an otome game and successfully romanced the frogs, which Iā€™m assuming is a little bit out of the bounds of what they were expecting from this experiment. If they do release that app publicly at some pointā€”they labeled the version at the expo to be a ā€œtest version,ā€ so maybeā€”I sincerely hope they at least fine tune it because Good Lord. Finally and maybe most importantly, there were new voice lines recorded for the exhibit to give it an audio-drama type simple story, but unfortunately it was probably not archived because video recording was not allowed inside the venue. The platoon all had new voice lines along with Fuyuki and Natsumi, reportedly still played by Houko Kuwashima and Chiwa Saito respectively, so most likely they will return to reprise the roles for the new anime, though I donā€™t think those two were much in question. Thatā€™s really like the only important part of this for the purposes of this post Iā€™m not sure why I mentioned anything else here actually. AI chatbot Dororo wants you to know he enjoys tickles from Giroro and Tamama. Yeah this thingā€™s a little fucked
I didnā€™t want to get too deep into this in section 3 because itā€™s not really a production related question, butā€¦are Shin Keroro and related new characters gonna be in this or not? For what itā€™s worth the site seems to count the Flash series as part of the anniversary celebration, and screenshots with Shin in them are there even if he is completely absent from the character page. Flash was a total reboot so I donā€™t think it will be that exact iteration of the character if he is in the new anime, but there must be some way to work his stuff into the existing anime canon even with its many differences from the manga. Honestly I think the main obstacle to him appearing is just that the guy is not very popular lol. Heā€™s hardly in the manga anymore and Tomosu and Myou are in it even less. Iā€™m not sure if it was just franchise fatigue following the end of the anime but the reception to Shin was very meh across the board (at least among longtime fans, kids mightā€™ve liked him I think. Which makes sense). So I could totally see them skipping him entirely. Thereā€™s still a lot of post-anime manga-only stories without his involvement at all, some that included him but he could easily be changed to some other character, and for the stories that revolved around him, well, the Flash anime got to a decent amount of them. This could really go either way but for now Iā€™m going to lean toward him not being included. If heā€™s put in I think it will not be until the ā€œsecond seasonā€ (whatever the definition of that ends up being) so we can be eased back in to the existing cast first before shaking things up significantly.
I like the new artstyle, assuming it carries over from the trailer to the final project. It looks like they hit a happy medium between the early and late artstyles of the original anime. This is the most obvious with the human cast who havenā€™t received new official artwork by Koike and/or Oizaki in a looooong time, and they look much better than the last time we saw them in season 7 where everyone got weirdly lanky for some reason.
Okay FINALLY Iā€™m done here for now I think. At the time of writing weā€™re pretty much just in a ā€œwait and seeā€ phase with no other real concrete info around that I havenā€™t touched upon in this post. Trust me, Iā€™ve tried digging for more, but I couldnā€™t find anything really interesting staff-wise and very few of the staff credited in the trailer are even on social media (sometimes staff can be a bit loose-lipped so itā€™s possible to get hints there). Iā€™ve also checked every nook and cranny of the official sites of both animation studios and the companies on the production committee and turned up with nothing of note. Iā€™m hoping we get some more info at least sometime between now and autumn.
Thanks for reading all the way to the end (or speedscrolling here, donā€™t worry I wonā€™t be disappointed lol). I hope you found it informative even though I probably spent way too much time yapping about dumb shit. It took me entirely too long to write this post, but I donā€™t have as much time as I did as a teenager and itā€™s been a good few years since Iā€™ve done a really deep dive into Keroro stuff. Needless to say, Iā€™m beyond excited for this project and canā€™t wait to see how the last seven years of me huffing unhealthy amounts of copium pays off. Iā€™ve had like a month and a half to sit on it now and it honestly still doesnā€™t feel real!
I will most likely return to report when we get some amount of substantial infoā€”hopefully with way fewer words lmao. Until next time! Ge-gero~
