Retro dungeon maker Quest Master announced for Switch, PC
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
Publisher Apogee Entertainment and developer Skydevilpalm have announced retro dungeon maker Quest Master for Switch and PC (Steam). It will launch first in Early Access for PC in Q3 2023, followed by a full release at a later date.
“Quest Master hands over the controls to the players to make whatever they want,” said lead developer Julian Creutz in a press release. “The possibilities are endless, and we can’t wait to see all kinds of wacky dungeons and full-blown adventures players are able to come up with.”
Here is an overview of the game, via Apogee Entertainment:
Craft a legendary journey from scratch with an intuitive level creator to make simple dungeons and overworld-connected quests in this faithful pixel art love letter to top-down action JRPG classics of yesteryear. Drag-and-drop dozens of themed design tiles onto a blank canvas to create lava-filled caverns, mountainous overworlds, grassy forests, desert dunes, and more. Provide instructions for the quest ahead or design an epic narrative full of placeable NPCs and customizable signs with a plethora of dialogue options.
When the masterpiece is complete, fearlessly charge into the world, ready to face belligerent bats, surly snakes, and nefarious skeletons. Keep enemies at a safe distance with a bow or bring them in for combat close with a precisely aimed hookshot. Master weapons and powerful magic, navigate user-created labyrinths, unlock doors and solve puzzles while defending against the dangers that lurk within. Guide progression with bodies of water and boulders that can only be traversed with a hammer or flippers.
The journey is as easy or as difficult as the creator wishes. Invent patience-testing experiences or entire quests with multiple biomes, bosses, and side missions. Place enemy spawn points in strategic locations to create challenging dungeons (that can lock upon entry!) before concocting the perfect puzzle with the ideal amount of flaming traps, levers, timed switches, and invisible chests.
Venture through bespoke labyrinths solo, or dungeon-crawl cooperatively with up to 3-player multiplayer sessions. Share created quests with others and try out worlds made by fellow designers online. Recreate classic levels from famous top-down action games of old, and craft adventures reminiscent of the 16-bit classics.

Deep Down the Dwarven Mines in Below the Stone
From tin and copper to the ultra-hard rock holding platinum, not to mention the goodies found in chests inside goblin and skeleton-infested ruins, it’s almost a dwarven paradise aside from the ever-present risk of death.  New characters found in the deeper areas come back to the kingdom to offer new services, and the new biomes offer better materials to craft ever-more-powerful equipment.  It’s a cycle of exploration and survival in Below the Stone, and there isn’t a dwarf alive who wouldn’t mine the caves for every bit of loot they hold.
Check it out!

REVIEW | "Bread & Fred" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
Can the cutest-looking game around also be the most difficult one to experience? I think back to my time playing Puyo Puyo Tetris, a video game with adorable visuals but a wicked hard campaign. Despite its candy-sweet characters and silly story, this game — be it in single or multiplayer mode — could be very unforgivable. The same can be said for Apogee Entertainment and Sand Castle Studio’s Bread & Fred, whose cute looks hides an extreme journey to the top.
The premise of Bread & Fred is simple: climb a mountain and reach the top. Together, the two titular penguins must use their skills in order to plant their flag at the peak. Mastering the arts of jumping, climbing, and swinging are key to making it up the tough and intimidating mountain. On top of that, both Bread and Fred need to be in-synch with one another in order to do it.
Tumblr media
Teamwork is what makes Bread & Fred the ultimate co-op challenge. Even in the beginning, if you can’t make the first few leaps together in under ten minutes, then the rest of the journey may not look so good for you. Fortunately, there are ways to learn to be in-synch, be it via verbal communication or the handy countdown button. Of course, it also depends on where your co-penguin is playing, as playing via Remote Play can make certain obstacles very shaky to conquer.
Clocking at 500 meters, the height of the mountain doesn’t sound so terrifying. Only when you see what sorts of hazards will greet you where one’s armpits with start sweating from stress. Long gaps that require major swings, platforms big enough for a single penguin, and walls that will have Bread and Fred holding to dear life to will be on the menu every step of the way. And my only advice: use the flag checkpoint system, or risk having an aneurysm if you tumble way, way, way down!
