There are so many fascinating characters in this series and so many dynamics and yet the most popular dynamic is genuinely one of the least interesting to me including a character with barely any screentime and people act like Chuuya is the only fucking person who ever matters to Dazai ignoring the fact every action he's taken has been for Atsushi and the ADA and ignore that Kunikida has been his partner just a year less than Chuuya and at this point the two characters you ship are literally just OCs because they're so badly characterized.

I don't actually hate them I'm ngl what I DO hate is a) the fact nearly every depiction of them is so greviously mischaracterized it makes me want to tear my skin off, b) the fact I enjoy both these characters independently but most content is them as a ship, c) they're so fucking popular it's way too hard to find content of other characters or with Dazai and Chuuya with other characters, d) general bashing of Kunikida, KNDZ, Ango, aka two of my comfort characters and my comfort ship, e) the reduction of basically every fucking character in the series INCLUDING THE MAIN CHARACTER ATSUSHI to an accessory for them, f) the ukeification of Chuuya and general mischaracterization into stereotypical yaoi roles, g) the fact that platonic SKK is just as or more interesting yet any content of these two is almost always romantic or pre-romantic.

anyways. I ironicallyish hate dazai osamu from popularish manga and anime and light novel and creature bunguo stray dogs. I have many reasons. :] that would be badly articulated if put here. :]

funniest ending the series could do that would cause the fandom anger. :] would be him staring into the camera and informing the audience he is a STRAIGHT man who LIKES WOMEN and has never thought of kissing men. that is what I would say if it were not for the fact that he already did that. :] in like the first chapter of the manga. :]

in summary it'd be kinda funny if people voted hate because I find him. kinda annoying. :]

only mixed feelings I have are that the manga artist draws him really cool sometimes. not in the animes way where I think the animation team just tried to make him pretty at all times. just kinda. shaped. there is a panel where he is in a trash can. then again the manga has a generally shapey artstyle that's always fun to look at so.

Also this shouldnt have any spoilers, it's a scenario that never happened in the BSD universe so…

From a young age I have loved to read. Starting with some of Signet's classics and diving into more classics, consuming such media as a young kid tended to isolate me from the other children. They called me weird and peculiar. I used to abhor going to school for that reason, until I realized that perhaps being surrounded by people would only further isolate me. 

Being alone as a kid teaches you many things. One, how to read people and what makes them tick. While this may seem manipulative it was only in response to a sense of longing for friends and interaction. Which only served to weird people out even more. Two, to appreciate the silence. While it may seem weird, appreciating the silence, many adults struggle to appreciate the silence seeing it as awkward. 

Which brings me to my current predicament. Being in Yokohama, Japan as a tourist, only to find myself locked in a jail cell for taking the train at the wrong time. Talk about bad luck. And to make matters worse someone stole one of my suitcases at the airport. Meaning I lost all of my books. Well, all except one, my heavily damaged copy of no longer human, that resided in my satchel (which the guards let me keep for some bizarre reason that I cannot fathom). 

I bit back a sigh as I looked towards the bars for the nth time that hour. 

“You know, staring at those bars isn't going to let you out.” A cheerful voice called out, causing me to jolt slightly. I turned my head towards the man, he wore a tan trench coat, and upon closer inspection he seemed to be injured (judging by the bandages he wore). 

“I know, I just cannot for the life of me understand why I have been locked up.” I said, trying to keep the lingering irritation from my tone. 

The other people in the cell seemed to perk up at my remark. A short ginger in particular seemed interested in my comment. “What do you mean?” He asked, making his way across the cell, standing a few steps away from the taller bandaged brunette. “Don’t you have some sort of ability or something? That's why we are all here, they’re gathering all of the ability users in Yokohama for some sort of elimination project or something.” He continued, narrowing his eyes at me. 

I stared at him for a moment, ‘elimination project? This guy must have a screw loose, and ‘abilities,’ he’s gotta be nuts.’ I sighed, “Listen, I’m as confused as the next person. I got here a few hours ago, I'm here on vacation.” I said, irritation lacing my tone at his accusatory gaze. “I was on the train at the wrong time, I guess.” I said, shrugging my shoulders as I spoke. “Listen, I have no idea why we’re all here, okay?” I finished, opting to look away from the duo in front of me and instead towards the bars once more.

I couldn't see it but my commentary brought glances my way. Many curious gazes wondering just who I was to get kidnapped by an anti-ability organization. 

A new voice chimed in, “Chuuya, Dazai quit bothering our guest.” I fixed my gaze to the source of the voice, a seemingly middle aged man with semi-long hair. ‘So they do have names’ I thought to myself, ‘although it's quite peculiar, Chuuya and Dazai, like the authors?’ 

The shorted male—Chuuya—drew me out of my thoughts, giving the older male a small ‘yes boss’ giving me one last glance before he returned to the otherside of the cell. The taller brunette—Dazai—instead gave the male a smile that seemed to have the implication of an underlying threat. “Ah fine, fine Mori.” He said darkly, glancing at me smiling cheerfully, as he made his way to sit next to me on the cell bench (much to my dismay). 

“I’m Osamu, Osamu Dazai, and you are?” He asked, returning to the suave persona he had before. 

I stared at him blankly, attempting to keep a straight face as the corners of my lips tried to curve upwards. “Your parents must’ve been big fans of his work, hmm?” I asked, “And I’m N/n” I said. ‘Giving him a nickname isn't bad.’ I thought to myself, ‘I’m not sure how much I want a man named after a famous author to know my name, especially an author who tried to commit double suicide with quite a few women.’ 

He gave me a blank look, “Whose work?” he asked, genuine confusion painting his features. 

It was my turn to be confused, “Dazai.” I said.

He nodded, “what about me?” He asked, a new emotion swirling in his eyes: Interest. 

I stared at him once more, “no not you, Dazai, the author.” I said, exacerbated, he was a famous author. How had this man not heard of him? He shared the name for goodness sake. 

He once again gave me a blank look. 

I sighed, “Mine has been a life of much shame. I can’t even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being.” I said, quoting the very first line of Dazai's most well-known story. 

His eyebrows lifted in surprise, “What was that?” He asked, his tone sounding weak? 

It was now my turn to stare at him, “The first line of one of his more well known books, No longer Human.” 

There was a gasp somewhere in the cell, as more heads turned my way. Dazai grabbed my wrist, “Say another line.” he said, almost demandingly. 

Confusion consumed me, but I obliged, taking a deep breath.“  Actions punishable by jail sentences are not the only crimes. If we knew the antonym of crime, I think we would know its true nature. God . . . salvation . . love . .. light. But for God there is the antonym Satan, for salvation there is perdition, for love there is hate, for light there is darkness, for good, evil. Crime and prayer? Crime and repentance? Crime and confession? Crime and ... no, they're all synonymous. What is the opposite of crime?” I finished, looking into his eyes as he stared me down. 

“Just who are you?” he asked, a dark look appearing on his face replacing the affable one from before, “How do you use an ability even when I touch you?”

I stared at him for the nth time, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I said, choosing my words carefully as he tightened his grip on my wrist. “I’m just well-read. I know the lines to certain books like I know the roads of my hometown.” I said.

“But that doesn't explain how you know the name of my ability.” He said his tone bereft of any emotion. 

“What’s your ability?” I asked, genuinely confused. 

He stared at me, looking into my eyes as though he were attempting to decipher something unknown to me. “I see.” was all he said, dropping his grip on my wrist to instead lace his fingers with my own. “What do you think about double suicide?”

“I think that it’s unoriginal.” I said plainly, ‘it's hard to believe he doesn't know of the author, his ideals are similar.’ 

He gasped, his persona reappearing once more, “Unoriginal, how?!” He questioned, gazing at me as though I had offended him in the worst way possible. 

Before I could answer, his gaze turned pointed towards someone behind me. 

I followed his gaze to see a tall man with long hair, although most of it was covered with a ushanka. Said man was glancing down at me, amusement dancing in his eyes. 

“I’m Fyodor—”

“—Dostoevsky?” I asked cutting off his thick russian accent. 

His eyes widened in surprise, although just for a second, and then he was back to smiling. “Yes, I take it you also know of an author with the same name as I?” He asked, glancing behind me at Dazai.

I slowly nodded, ‘so it’s safe to assume everyone here has been listening.’ 

“Yes, Crime and Punishment.” I said, smiling slightly. “It was quite a good book, one which I’d assume is your,” I paused, internally cringing, “ability?” 

His eyes glimmered, as he decided to sit on the other side of  me, opposite from Dazai. “Yes, yes it is.” 

“I’m quite interested though, what do you mean by authors and books?” He asked, making an allusion to something that went over my head. 

I was truly puzzled, were they playing dumb or did they truly not know? “You share the name of a famous author from the Eighteenth century.” I said quietly. 

He seemed to revel in my sudden quietness and confusion, leaning in, “and do you know my  book well?” He asked, as I began to lean away from him and into Dazai. 

“Yes, I read it a few times, once in high school and a few times in college.” I said, my brain swimming in confusion as I tried to wrap my head around everything. 

He smiled, leaning back to give me some space, “Do you have any quotes you particularly enjoyed?” He asked, smiling still adorning his features but not matching his eyes that seemingly attempted to dissect me. 

I slowly nodded, trying to rack my brain for any good quotes that I could remember. I opened my mouth, “ Crime is a protest against the abnormality of the social order—just that, and nothing more, no other causes admitted, and that's that!" 

Fyodor’s eyes shined with glee at my statement, “You are quite peculiar.” He said, eyes glancing to my lap momentarily where Dazai and I’s hand were. “You have no idea of your worth, or your ability.” He said, opening his mouth as though he wanted to say more before looking away thinking against it. 

“I don’t know what youre talking about.” I said, the irritation I had pushed down earlier coming up. “You’re messing with me, you have to be.” I said, pausing, “all of you.” 

The people in question turned to me confused, “You all share the names of famous authors and then get surprised when someone knows of one of their most famous books.” I paused, standing up, releasing my hand from Dazai’s, and turning my attention to the shorter male—Chuuya. “Let me guess, you’re Chuuya Nakahara and your ability is ‘For Tainted Sorrow?’ ” I didn't wait for  his reply. Turning to the older male—Mori. “And you’re Mori Ougai. With the ability ‘Vita Sexualis.’ ” 

The two males looked at me, shock enveloping their features. “How’d you-” The shorter tried to ask. 

“I told you!” I exclaimed, “I read a lot and you share names with famous authors!” 

The room was silent for a few minutes, save the murmurs of confusion at my outburst. 

“You should join us.” 

I’m leaving this open so I can expand on this later!

with the existence of beast, imagine all of the other universes we aren’t aware of. an idea i’m particularly fond of is if dazai joined the DOA.

imagine this: mori holds dazai back just a minute or so longer, and ranpo doesn’t stick around to make small talk with oda—both leading to dazai arriving as oda is already on the floor, unable to speak. instead of imparting advice on his young friend, oda tears off dazai’s bandages as he exhales his final breath.

there is no moment of realization for dazai. no clarity, no purpose. he feels empty, he feels betrayed, he feels angry. angry enough that, without oda’s guidance, and feeling as though he has no one else he can turn to, he seeks the advice of the only other person to understand him—fyodor.

fyodor, just beginning the initial stages of his plan at this point, is all too pleased to use this opportunity to invite dazai to join him. two demons with a similar goal in mind: to rid the world of abilities.

hear me out. oda was killed because he was a gifted. his ability was the only one to match gide’s, and mori desperately needed the gifted business permit. dazai surely recognized this, and i’m sure he isn’t very fond of special abilities after the fact. especially because his own ability isn’t considered normal among other ability users. he’s been described as “anti-gifted”, and that’s what his ability is—the antithesis to the gifted. the exact power which fyodor seeks.

he could’ve taken advantage of dazai’s vulnerable state. grief-stricken and bitter, dazai very well may have accepted. a new purpose, a way to avenge odasaku. this would the reason to live that he had been searching for. he didn’t care for right and wrong, good and evil; they were both the same in his mind. in his final moments, oda changed this for him. oda and dazai share parallels as well, which is why dazai did exactly as he asked of him—because he trusted oda’s judgement without question.

i think it would be really interesting to see dazai making use of his ability in this way. maybe i’m the only one…idk haha

Dazai:

Has bpd. A lot of his traits remind me of my friends with it

He some kind of trans. Nonbinary. Transfem. Transmasc. Idk he's megender lmao

He's described as appearing very youthful in the first two light novels. I imagine that once the events of the main timeline start picking up though, with all the time stopping or slowing abilities that *dont affect him*, he actually ages faster than the other characters. I draw current dazai with small wrinkles, which also hints at stress and stuff

Also, I imagine current dazai getting tanner as he works in the light, as well as getting more prominent freckles.

Round/doe eyes because that is part of his appearance in my opinion. Seeming unsuspecting and innocent, especially during his mafia days

A little, not very polished ramble on Fukuchi and political theory, initially meant to be the answer to an ask questioning what I thought of the last chapter but posting separately because it ended up having little to do with the actual chapter.

This arc is good. I mean, the politics dilemmas it tackles are real and relevant (or maybe it's just me and loving politics discussion, that's a real chance too). Themes and interrogatives such as whether the eradication of states is possible; the critic to democracy in favour of a single authoritarian leader as the optimal solution for citizens' wellbeing; the utilitarian reasoning behind the justification of sacrificing a few in order to ensure the greatest good to the most; the trolley problem– would you be willing to sacrifice five hundred in order to save two-hundred and ten million; the general interrogatives on why war happens; those are all real questions that political scientists try to give an answer to. I feel like bsd still hasn't cleared up where it stands in relation to these interrogatives– a lot of it is going to be determined on what Fukuzawa is going to do with his role of Army of Mankind's leader, whether he's going to accept it or something else. But I'm EXTREMELY curious to find out how the author will answer them and the worldview bsd is going to propose accordingly.

So far, bsd has seemed to me to propose a nihilistic-political realist-nationalist worldview: good and evil are meaningless binomials (Oda in his last speech to Dazai), every man acts in their own interest and the strongest prevails (Teruko in chapter 76), a strong sentiment of pride for own country that often translates in denigration of foreigners (the way all characters from other countries are villains, a somewhat reverence for military police (though other people have interpreted it being exactly the opposite))¹. Such reading of bsd is reinforced by Fukuchi's speech in chapter 85, with Fukuchi's character being made overall unsympathetic to the reader. At that point, I was like “Ah! Of course! The nationalist-realist manga makes of the anarchist an unsympathetic terrorist!” (and I'm quite confident I'm not misinterpreting by saying he was framed unsympathetically, at least as far as his ideals go. A lot of emphasis is put on his role of torturer, and the story protagonist looks very upset by it, which feels like inducing the reader to be as well).

But perhaps I was mistaken? Maybe I really jumped to the conclusion by believing this arc would have turned in an anti-anarchism morale. And even though it's still too soon to say it won't, in the arc conclusion we saw so far anarchism was at least framed in much more favourable lenses. Episode 5x11 and the last chapters have vastly subverted the lenses the reader is called to see Fukuchi under, and it's been SO interesting to see. Because Fukuchi isn't made unsympathetic, and as consequence his anarchist ideals aren't being framed as the senseless ravings of the villain anymore. Which I didn't see coming, and was pleasantly surprised by!! Fukuchi's desire to stop war by erasing all states, if not feasible, is now at least being framed as sensate and even noble; which is quite silly given that it's the same ideals he was carrying on in chapter 85, just with more details on political theory and positive lenses. Moreover, the world integration and creation of a single-state is framed as being a natural and unavoidable progression of history, which is CRAZY to me. I mean, it's crazy because it wholly contradicts the nationalist worldviews I found previously quite solidly established in this manga (which, again, might be just a big misreading on my side but. Wow.). Double crazy because there's about one million political scientists who would disagree with it… I don't think it's that much of an affirmed theory anywhere? If anything, because it's got some pretty strong historical negations: I'd like to ask Fukuchi how the gradual disgregation of states reconciles with the dissolution of the ussr and the objective difficulty to maintain wide pieces of land unified, the equally objective difficulty to concretize the goal of European integration, the new wave of nationalism in the world and new countries actively seeking independence rather than cohesion. In the end, Fukuchi seems to propose this insane hybrid of anarchism and authoritarianism with the negation of all states and a single leader detaining all the power (aka no separation of powers, the most rudimental basis to democracy), which sounds absolutely insane to any sensate person but I suppose can even make sense in the bsd world where there's no end to craziness.

I'm very very curious to see how the army of mankind's leader thing is going to be solved. Because if Fukuzawa accepts it, that's quite affirming that the best outcome for society is an authoritarian, antidemocratic regime. And although Fukuzawa himself was shown to be critic of that much (“Even if war did cease to exist, what would remain in that world is a single leader– a dictator. History has shown time and time again that dictatorships only rot.”, chapter 112), him being cornered to ultimately accept the role would seem to suggest that THAT is the only possible answer. Which is an odd subtle not-so-subtle authoritarian agenda which would be… Interesting to see affirmed? but at least that one *is* coherent with the previous signs of nationalism. That said, again, Fukuzawa was critical of it, so I'm not sure he will be willing to follow through (and I find it hard to image a new bsd where world order has been changed. And with Fukuzawa on top of the world, for the matter.) But Fukuzawa did not crush One Order… And overall the narrative seems to have trapped him into yielding to take on the role… Aaaahh, I'm just very curious from a political theory standpoint to see how the author is going to untangle the dilemma!!!

¹ In parenthesis I'm only bringing up the most notable indicators, but those doctrines are an underlying pattern of the whole manga and several events can lead back to these beliefs; for example, how Atsushi's abuse by the hand of the orphanage director is not morally condamned and even implied to have made him stronger, the emphasis on the great power of Japan (here emblematically represented by Yokohama) as a small country / city able to stand up against several evil foreign powers that make repeated attempts to destroy it, and more.

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞: 𝟐 𝐦𝐢𝐧. 𝟑𝟕 𝐬𝐞𝐜.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Kunikida’s heart stopped when he saw you with his notebook in his hands. Did you see what he had written about you? Why did he have to be so foolish and leave it behind; and how can he find out how you feel about him?

Kunikida’s head went dizzy, fuzzy and light. He was going to pass out. You were in front of his desk, stood with his notebook in your hands.

He opened his mouth to say something, to stop you, but nothing came out. He wasn’t sure if it was because of your overwhelming beauty; the way the sunlight peeked through the uncovered windows of the office or the way that you looked over to him and smiled. But he kept coming up empty handed.

“Kunikida, sorry. I wasn’t trying to snoop or anything. Dazai just told me you could help me out with something.” You had an awkward smile and Kunikida cleared his throat, walking over towards his desk and taking his book from you.

His heart beat pounded when his fingers grazed yours for a short moment; and he stuttered, “Did you read anything interesting?”

“I didn’t read your soulmate list if that is what you are worried about. I have some self control. Even if I was a little curious.” Your confident smile lessened the burden he felt on his back. At least you didn’t find out this way; the most anti-romantic way imaginable. He would have never forgiven himself for being so foolish.

“So, Kunikida..” “Yes, what is it?”

“Is it true that anything you write in your notebook comes to fruition?” Kunikida scratched the side of his head while he adjusted his glasses with one hand; trying to calm himself down. Why were you asking this so suddenly? “Well, in some sort of capacity; yes, but there’s some conditions. For example, the pages only create nonliving objects and it can’t create anything larger than this book here.”

“So, you could make something for me?”

“Of course!” Kunikida cleared his throat when his words came out in too much of a hurry, too eager. What is wrong with him. But that made you laugh with your hand reaching out and touching the back of his hand. “Thank you..”

He once again cleared his throat. Reaching for his pen as an excuse to take a step away from you; opening his book to an empty page. “What is it you would like for me to make?”

“A reservation for two at the really nice restaurant down the street, the one where the moon and the stars are visible so beautifully at night. Booked for Valentine’s Day.”

“I’m not sure I can..” Before he finished his sentence, your finger lowered his book to place a piece of paper atop his page. “Dazai kind of told me what he read earlier..but the joke is on him. I already had plans to ask you anyway.”

Kunikida stood in silence until you started to widen your eyes. “You aren’t rejecting me are you? I mean, was he just messing with me? I swear I’m going to..”

Kunikida silenced you by stepping forward, his arm tucked beneath your torso as his book laid open flat against your back. “Kunikida..?”

Your breath and heart sped up against his chest; and with the small space your face turned a shade of pink. “I’m not rejecting you.” He said. His arm pushing you further into his personal space. “I’m going to spoil you my entire life.”
