Coming out of my cave to post art on here again
I'm trying ( heavy emphasis on trying 😭 ) to make designs for every arc 1 WoF character, and since mudwings are the easiest tribe for me to draw I started with clay and his siblings
Their shapes and stuff make sense in my head and have reasonings but I can't put them into words rghHHgdgGGRRRghhgfh
CHARACTERS; CLAY [ TOP LEFT ] , SORA [BOTTOM LEFT ] , UMBER [ TOP RIGHT ] , REED [ BOTTOM RIGHT ]
For Clay I wanted to make him simple, going along with him not thinking that he's anything special and not fit for the prophecy. He's still brighter than his sibs though, and has the brightest colored scales before his underbelly. (Do those have a name?? )
For Sora I wanted her kinda deer-like, with softer/less bold edges than the others. She has a scar in the same place Crane's death wound was.
For Umber I just stuck pretty closely to the canon design, adding some splotches and giving him a different shape than the others.
Finally, for Reed I just made him clay but duller, and more red. He nearly looks just like clay shape-wise, but is more inward. (I have no idea how to describe this 😭)
CHARACTERS; MARSH [ TOP LEFT ] , PHEASANT [ BOTTOM LEFT ] , CRANE [ BOTTOM RIGHT ]
I had the most fun with these guys can u tell
For Marsh I made him more sharp and edgy than the others to go with his anxious personality. His colors are very similar to Clay's, but he has splotches and light colored horns. (I love Marsh, he's underappreciated)
For Pheasant I wanted to base her off of a pheasant. Her markings are similar to those of a ring-necked pheasant, with her reds being the same as Umber's. She originally had green-ish yellow on her to go with her eyes (and also because pheasants have green on them) but I couldn't get it to work. (crying spongebob image) Her shape is more 'elegant' than her sibs. I think her design is my favorite out of all of these.
For Crane I based her lightly off of a crane. (🤯🤯🤯) She shares colors with sora and umber. (Sora because obviously, Umber because I needed his reds 😁) since really all we know about her is that she was protective of her sibs (as literally all of them are) I made her fierce and determined looking. Version without her death wound below
I got more confident in not following the canon designs super closely the more designs I made and it shows 😭😭 I never realized how much variety you can make in mudwings despite them being the 'boring' ones
adding image ID/alt texts tomorrow I needed to post this before I forgor but it's almost 12 and im tired goodnight jasper fans

HiveWings
HiveWings in my headcanon of WoF are small (yet brawny) carnivorous dragons that largely resemble insects in the order Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants, etc.)
They are the smallest dragon tribe, with the average adult HiveWing standing just as tall as the smallest adult SandWing (i.e Sunny). But don't let their size fool you — with six sets of sharp claws and a stinger that can pierce in between the thickest of scales, they're a force to be reckoned with, especially in numbers. Any dragon afraid of needles would think HiveWings are their worst nightmare.
While all HiveWings have a stinger, not all HiveWings have the same potency of venom. Very rarely, some HiveWings are capable of dishing out lethal doses, while most can only nauseate or disable the subject of their stings.
Despite being much more muscular than SilkWings, they are incredibly quick and light on their talons. Their hind legs are specialized for quick takeoff, being able to spring into the air in the blink of an eye. Their two sets of forearms are ideal for grasping and holding prey, and their extra set of eyes are capable of detecting even the most precise of movements through body heat.
Speaking of eyes, HiveWings have the largest eyes in proportion to their bodies of any dragon tribe. They have acute eyesight and are capable of spotting movement from up to two miles away, even in the dark.
HiveWings are the only dragon tribe that are capable of hovering at a single coordinate, whereas other dragons must soar in circles around the same location.
HiveWing jaws are capable of splitting wide open (think Hyperendocrine Giganotosaurus from The Isle albeit to a lesser degree). Nobody likes watching a HiveWing eat, because they have a strange tendency to swallow things straight up, rather than chew.

Some WoF headcanons (pt. 2: Pantalan Tribes)
(Some of these are my own, and some I’ve seen from others)
SilkWings
SilkWing hybrids have a chance of having different properties in their silk (icy silk for IceWing hybrids, glowing silk for SeaWing hybrids, poisonous silk for SandWing hybrids, etc.)
SilkWings have a huge love for flowers, and will cover their homes and gardens with different flowers that represent themselves.
Their wings are super sensitive to water, and thus they hate getting wet and avoid being out in the rain as much as possible.
They have soft spoken voices, and speak in a Glasgow-esque accent.
Some pets that SilkWings have are songbirds, arthropods (like butterflies, jumping spiders, and beetles), lizards, and cats.
Some SilkWings have nocturnality like moths.
SilkWings are obligate herbivores, and cannot live without plants, nectars, and fruits. Meat is also known to give them stomach aches and pains.
They have very long tongues that are able to function like a proboscis.
HiveWings
Their wings make a buzzing sound, and their flight patterns are very erratic and quick.
They have the worst eyesight in terms of quality, and HiveWings needing glasses is pretty common.
They eat almost anything, and aren’t very picky.
They have the biggest military, and are very nationalistic in nature.
HiveWings take very good care of their dragonets, and royal HiveWings dragonets in particular are spoiled way more than necessary.
Lower class HiveWings will sometimes nest underground in elaborate tunnels like ant nests, and whole towns are sometimes build entirely underground.
Their jaws function somewhat like mandibles, and are surprisingly strong.
They are the second smallest tribe—only second to SilkWings.
LeafWings
A condition that LeafWings can be born with is something called Autumnal Syndrome. They are born with a scales the colour of autumn leaves (yellows, oranges, reds, or browns; cannot be green), and are more sickly and weak than regular LeafWings.
They can live and function quite well without any food (using photosynthesis instead), but cannot live entirely without food.
Their sense of style is very beautiful, using ferns, flowers, sewn plant materials, and grasses to make clothes and accessories.
There is a theory that LeafWings and RainWings came from a common ancestor; somewhat similar to how SilkWings and HiveWings came from BeetleWings.
Besides greens and browns, LeafWings can have accents of reds, oranges, yellows, violets, and pinks (they cannot be entirely these colours unless they have Autumnal Syndrome).
LeafWings have the largest diversity of sizes, ranging from being as small as SilkWings to as big as SkyWings.
They are very sensitive to the cold, and prefer hot, humid climates.
Some LeafWings can have small thorn-like spikes across their backs and tails.

Can't sleep so here's some random lore about a few of my latest wof dragon ocs. It's also gonna be a lot:
Bullet Ant:
He's a Hivewing from Yellowjacket hive. He primarily focused on his own studies rather than working which ranged from astrology, to geology, and whatever he was interested in since his interests change often.
He sucks at hunting but tries anyway once in a while. He was attempting to hunt a wildebeest that kept escaping when he got caught in the rainstorm that injured him and brought him to his future partner Kale.
When he was injured he broke a wing and a leg, and had crashed into a poisonous thorn bush of some sort. He also was knocked unconscious. Kale intended to keep him asleep while he healed and was going to sneak him back where she found him a few days later so he wouldn't attack or know where she was, though this didn't work and he ended up waking up.
He really misses his home and family in Yellowjacket hive but he loves Kale and decided to stay with her.
There were 3 incidents where Wasp did control him and almost caught him and Kale together. The first time was sudden and Wasp happened to just be looking for someone, Kale was not there but Bullet was scared when she returned and almost went home.
The second time Kale blindfolded him. Fortunately Wasp was only there for a moment. The third time Kale blindfolded him again and Wasp thought he was a blind dragon and moved on.
Bullet was very isolated even though he was with Kale. She never let him go to the Leafwing tribe and she eventually stayed away too for the safety of her new family. He tends to talk to himself and became more fidgety since being alone. He's learned a lot about survival though.
Bullet was very excited when he found out him and Kale were having a dragonet, but he quickly became more nervous considering what could go wrong and the fact they were in the jungle. He almost tried to convince Kale to let him take their egg back to the hive to be registered and hatched in a safer place but Kale got in a fight with him and stopped him. She eventually assured him it would be safe.
He thought Emerald was going to look more like a Hivewing, and he had hoped she would share a lot of his interests. Instead she likes hunting and being a general menace.
When they found out it was safe for all the tribes to meet he was very excited to see his family and have them meet Kale and Emerald. He rushed their move out of the jungle and accidentally got caught up in talking to the other tribes and his family so he hasn't spent much time with Emerald since they left the jungle.
His parents/Emerald's grandparents disapprove of Kale and Emerald greatly. Bullet keeps trying to convince them to accept his family. Other hivewings tend to disapprove of his relationship and he does his best to defend Kale and Emerald.
Kale:
Kale is a "sapwing" and a medicinal expert. She tends to go off on her own to look for ingredients and herbs. She has a rather large family in the jungle.
She was sent with a group who heard that hivewings were spotted near the jungle to spy. She ended up separating from them and was near the edge of the jungle when the storm hit and she found Bullet.
She almost killed him because she was afraid but decided she could hide him in a deep part of the jungle where she has a secret medicine den. She was drugging him to keep him unconscious while he healed, but she had to return to her tribe every now and then to get things done. During a medical emergency that kept her too long to redose Bullet he woke up to discover where he was. When she returned he tried to attack her but she was and still is much stronger than him.
She told him he was a prisoner and that the Leafwings were going to use him to get information or a trade deal with the Hivewings. After a while of mistrust and an escape attempt by Bullet where he almost got caught by other leafwings, Kale eventually told him the truth.
Her and Bullet ended up staying together after he fully healed cause she wouldn't let him go home right away. She thought he might tell Wasp where she was and the rest of the Leafwings. After enough insisting he stay and teaching him more about the Leafwings they fell in love and he decided to stay to be with her, and to keep her tribe safe.
She eventually faked her death by pretending to be eaten by a plant so she could go raise a dragonet with Bullet. Her family was greatly upset and held a funeral which she spied on.
When she had Emerald's egg she was very concerned that it might not survive. She also had many worries about how a hybrid dragonet might turn out and the challenges that might exist. She eventually felt more confident and guessed that Emerald was a girl. Kale also wanted to name Emerald, Dandelion but after she hatched with mostly green scales she let Bullet name her instead since he was disappointed she didn't look much like him.
Kale taught Emerald lots about medicine and jungle safety. Emerald took more after her mother's personality. Kale almost considered having another dragonet when Emerald was little cause she wanted other dragonets to play with and was all alone. Kale decided not to though because it would've been harder to hide and raise 2 dragonets in secret.
When the tribes were safe she was first to hear about it since she often evesdropped on her tribe. She was very unsure about moving out of the jungle when Bullet insisted but she did it because they could see their families again and Emerald now had a chance of meeting other dragons instead of growing up and living alone forever.
Kale found her family who was shocked to see she was alive. They were going to disown her but Kale begged them not to and told them she had a daughter and partner. They were also shocked to meet Bullet and are wary of him but are attempting to accept him. They mostly ignore Emerald. Kale was and is very concerned about how Emerald is adjusting but hasn't had an opportunity to speak with her, Emerald becoming more secretive and rebellious also concerns Kale.
Emerald:
She grew up very happy and with plenty, perhaps too much attention from her parents. She likes hunting and building things. She also likes to explore and color/draw. She was very lonely growing up which she didn't entirely realize. She was sad there were no other dragonets around and ended up playing with Bullet most of the time.
She has 2 sets of wings but her smaller wings are extra small and are partially attached to her larger wings by the membrane. She also can't fold her wings very much (I headcanon hivewing's wings don't really bend much and stick out behind them/rest on their back instead) so she always has them stuck back like a Hivewing but it looks a little odd for her. She can fly just fine but has an uneven wingbeat since the moving joint in her wings is more like a Hivewing but her wings are shaped more like a Leafwings.
She is very bold and likes to stay up late. She only once snuck out to spy on the Leafwing tribe and almost got caught. Her parents decided not to tell her much about either of their tribes other than the good parts. They intended to never return so they wanted to make sure she felt safe even though they were in hiding always. She instead built up glorified versions of all 3 tribes in her mind and thought they would be exited to meet her one day.
When they moved out of the jungle she was excited at first but then didn't want to go since they weren't going to come back to live there. She was very nervous leaving the jungle.
When they met the tribes her parents announced themselves and many dragons judged them. Emerald was shocked and heartbroken when she tried to talk to some hivewings who insulted her and we're mean. She was also sad when she was mistaken for a leafwing by other leafwings and they realized she was a hybrid and avoided her immediately. Most other dragons avoided her and her parents since things were still tense.
After a few days Emerald decided she was better off alone and became more of a loner. She also began acting out and rebelling since she is mad at her parents for moving out of the jungle and not spending much time with her while they reconnected with their families.
They tried to send her to a school and she often gets kicked out. She met a silkwing named Checkerspot who didn't have wings yet and she was perplexed by that. She also saved Checker from falling out of a hive window since they were balancing precariously and were rather clumsy. They eventually became great friends.
Emerald is teaching Checker to be more rebellious even though they are rather too happy and easy going for it to matter. She also sneaks Checker into the jungle to explore and teach them things. They often yell and do art together while in the jungle to have fun and relieve stress and worries to each other.
Checkerspot thinks that they should make friends with a few Hivewings and Leafwings so they can have a group of friends. This makes Emerald uneasy. She wants to reject both her tribes but keeps having to face them and come to terms with the fact they are both part of her.

Ahhh.... I don't know how to say this but I've never watched or read Harry Potter... But I'll give it my best shot!
Hufflepuff? They seem cool, and fun. Hopefully I wouldn't die to the weird tree things on the school but y'know.
Pet... I think I'd just keep my cat. A little bitty orange kitten, the terror of the lands.
Patronus? I think that's what it is... Is it like a animal that protects you, or a witches familiar? Anyway, if it's that, I want a floating jellyfish.
Animagus, from what I've heard, I think that's a thing you can turn into illegally? Like a animal shape shift thingy? Anyway, ant. Cause like, it'd be terrifying with a spell or something to make me bigger.
Please forgive all of this, I'm certain it's very wrong and incorrect on everything.
-🐗
No because I was never into Harry Potter or Percy Jackson or Warrior Cats man. I’d find random shit in my school libraries, like the original Hansel & Gretel, a book about this girl solving a mystery with the help of three decapitated head cuz her parents ran a morgue(???) and my favorite series ever: Wings Of Fire, I have four graphic novels and all the books up to book 14. Would die for WOF.
Your the second non Slytherin (I think I’m tired-), and dw I barely understood the terms too lmao but JELLYFISH AWW I love jellyfish sm-

This is why in nature, the 'hive queen' of the hivemind doesn't actually control anything, but is rather just the source of where the hive is, like bees, wasps, ants, termites, etc.
It's also why most modern takes on hiveminds have it so the drones are their own individual completely, their own individual but can be made to serve, and/or so mindbogglingly stupid and simple that it costs two megabytes worth of ram to keep them running. MLP Changelings, WoF HiveWings, and Halo Flood, respectively.
There's also the extra tier of hiveminds where there the 'hivemind' aspect is just a part of the species and there is no host or it's caused and provided by technology and/or divinity, or the hivemind has a certain radius. StarCraft Protoss and StarCraft Zerg, respectively.
I mean massive colonies of hive-species on our own planet need multiple queens in order to keep the whole thing going, and species with enough foothold and efficiency can create supercolonies, like the Fireant has done to everyone's detriment. I assume it would have to be the same for any sci-fi hive species as well, excluding the possibility that it was caused/fueled/provided by something beyond our world, like an Eldritch being, who is probably only mildly inconvenienced by it.
All three of the Zerg leaders created other co-hosts to help them control the entire swarm more extensively and intensively, and as a safety-net in case they met their untimely demise. The Breath of Evil needed several minds to keep it under control with reasonable effect, and its main hosts could not control everyone without eventually overtaxing themselves. Changelings only had a strong devotion to their hive, so much so that they can defect if they so willed it. My favorite fanfic of the Changelings had it so that only the most powerful could speak to other royals or command drones, and their presence alone caused the Changelings to sync up far better instinctively. The Protoss were able to feel, think, etc. with their peers, but had enough free will that they still have to be taught things. Ants, bees, etc. are just biologically built and programmed to aid their hive in whatever way they can, even if it means thousands die in the process.
So I was thinking vaguely today about hive minds and how we generally see them in science fiction—you know, a whole bunch of tiny brains in a bunch of tiny bodies, but each one has a shred of extra processing power, so if you add them all together, you get a Super Intelligent Brain that usually winds up called the Queen, because we have perfectly good eusocial insects on earth and why waste nomenclature.
Which is fine for what it does! No argument!
But y’know, running a body is a REALLY brain-intensive process. Like, it takes a metric assload* of evolutionary time before you get a brain that can do more than make sure its owner breaths, blinks, and swallows occasionally. Which makes me wonder about the tipping point for an alien hive mind.
You gotta figure that there is an energy cost, however small, in linking the whole system together, so is there a point where you just have too many bodies to multitask for? A hive horizon, as it were? Where the existence of so many bodies that need regulating becomes a drain on the system instead? Maybe the Queen hatches a mal of new workers to grow the brain bigger and instead just winds up making way too many bodies that all need brain power to breathe and thermoregulate and Jesus Christ, they all need naps, how am I supposed to solve these differential equations about FTL travel when everybody insists on blinking and swallowing all the damn time?!
As an outsider, can you tell if the Queen is losing her shit based on whether the hive members all started doing things simultaneously? Everybody starts blinking and swallowing in unison as the Queen pulls brain power to try and cope with some particular crisis? Chunks of the hive are just left to asphyxiate because sorry, we really need that processing power you were using for semi-voluntary functions like breathing? Are there legends among queens about how if you grow too large, your brain falls apart?
…anyway, these are the things I think about when I’m in the shower.
*this handy unit can be abbreviated as “mal” for ease of notation, as in “Holy shit, there were 3 mal of dead tourists in that guy’s basement!”
#this went literally everywhere and im sorry#i just really like hive minds too and the logistics of them#like theyre just so cool and im so proud of us for stealing the idea from nature to put into our literature
