A Cruel Thirst | Angela Montoya
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC! I found this lushly written and the characters so well-described. Montoya does a great job jumping between different views and perspectives. Also can we talk about the stunning cover?? I would recommend this to anyone looking for a really well constructed vampire romance.

Just finished Sinner’s Isle by Angela Montoya. It was a bit slow for me but I gotta say the world building’s really enchanting.
[technically a spoiler below? but not really]
I REALLY REALLY expected a twist reveal that Mariano’s mother was a siren, and it felt like they set that up so much with the whole sea serpents are full grown male sirens thing. When he asked the Siren Queen how she knew his mom I was 100% sure she was gonna say “she was my daughter” and I was absolutely gobsmacked that she didn’t. I’m keeping the head canon, Mariano is half siren.

Two passions of mine are lists and family trees/next generations. One of my bigger gripes with the Fandom Wiki is that they will put absolutely everything to be a character category... aside from “next generation”...
So, I’m making my own list of next generation characters from all over the multiverse. Which is ungrateful, to be quite frank, due to how hard they are to find if you haven’t met them personally in a comic yet.
Which brings us to this post. Consider it a WIP as well as an ask for help. If you are as interested in next gen characters as I am, look at the shiny list! If you have read comics including next gen characters not listed here, please tell me the source and name so I can add them!
(Listed in braces behind are home Earth and continuity; if nothing is listed, it’s a child from the main continuity. Also, the list is in alphabetical order by hero alias, so if you want to just check a particular hero, that’s where you’ll find them.)
Children of Aquaman / Arthur Curry / Orin
With Mera:
Arthur Curry Jr. (New Earth main continuity; dead and also erased)
Arthur Joseph ‘AJ’ Curry (New Earth main continuity; erased)

Book Blurb: A spellbinding romantic fantasy about a powerful witch who will do anything to escape the remote island she’s being held captive on, including blackmail a notorious, charming pirate who washes up on shore, from debut author Angela Montoya.
Rosalinda is trapped on Sinner’s Isle, an island filled with young women like her—Majestics, beautiful witches loathed by society for their dangerous magic yet revered by powerful men who want to use them.
For years, she has been kept under the watchful, calculating eye of Doña Lucia. Now eighteen, Rosa will be the prized commodity at this year’s Offering, a fiesta for the wealthy to engage in drink, damsels, and debauchery. That is why she must flee—before someone forces the vicious phantoms within her to destroy everything she touches.
Handsome, swashbuckling Mariano has long sailed the high seas as the Prince of Pirates. Then the king’s fleet attacks his father’s infamous ship, leaving him marooned on Sinner’s Isle with only an enchanted chain meant to lead him to his heart’s desire. Instead, he falls into the hands of a brazen (although) bewitching headache—Rosa.
Together they must outwit each other and their enemies before the Offering ends and it’s too late to escape the perils of Sinner’s Isle.
Review:
In a world where witches known as Majestics are held captives on an island and forced to be bonded to people and have their powers used without their consent, a powerful young witch yearns to escape and the only person she can get help from is the mysterious roguish pirate that landed on her island that she can't stay away from. Rosalina is trapped on Sinner's Isle, an island filled with young women, witches, who were forced here because society views their magic as dangerous and where these women would be forced to be bonded to powerful men. Rosalina has been plotting her escape, she doesn't want to be forced to be bonded to a man, to have her powers used against her will, she wants freedom from it all. She is the prized commodity at this year's Offering, a fiesta for the wealthy to come and pick a Majestic to take. Rosalina fears her powers, her abilities to control shadows, because she barely has any control and she knows in the wrong hands she'd destroy everything and everyone. Then there is the handsome Prince of Pirates, Mariano, who has been sailing the seas and going on adventures. Yet when the king's fleet attacks his father's ship, he becomes marooned on Sinner's Isle with only an enchanted necklace his father gave him telling him it would lead to his heart's desire... and instead he finds himself being lead straight to Rosa. When Rosa's escape attempt ends with her best friend being held captive and Rosa being blackmailed and threatened into behaving for the Offering, she needs a new plan to escape, and when she runs into a handsome pirate, she knows he is the key to her escape and rescuing her friend. The more Rosa and Mariano spend time together the stronger this strange feeling between them begins to grow. Can they both find a way to escape Sinner's Isle and all the enemies on the island that want to destroy them or will they be forced to never have the chance at a peaceful life... possibly together....This was an overall really interesting novel and I enjoyed how everything wrapped up in the end. I thought the magic system was interesting and I liked how the relationship between the two main characters grew. It's a fun read and I would recommend it for anyone looking for a nice fantasy romance with some magic and some pirates!
*Thanks Netgalley and Random House Children's, Joy Revolution for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
