Queer Book Recs for Speak Your Language Day!

Once a year on Tumblr on May 7th, the account @spyld organizes Speak Your Language Day, a day to encourage people on such an English-centric platform to speak their native languages instead. Duck Prints Press works with creators from over the world, many of whom speak languages other than English as their native tongues (French and German are most common among our folks, but they’re far from the only mother tongues) and so we wanted to join in the celebration for the day by highlighting some of our favorite queer works originally published in languages other than English. Six people contributed to this list (half themselves not native English speakers.). Original language blurbs used when possible!

Where We Go from Here (Você Tem a Vida Inteira) by Lucas Rocha. Original language: Brazilian Portuguese

baby sister of three older sisters. have been treated like a child for most of her life and was never taken seriously. this made her very frustrated and wanting to prove herself;

she loves cats! vesta will always be taking care of the stray cats she finds on her corner of the east end hills. (when they used to live back in D2 and sejanus was a child, she owned a cat. after they moved, she left her cat with her sister);

her father was a misogynistic who never got over the fact that despite trying four times, he never got a son. of all his daughters, the one he was the most mean to was vesta... mainly because unlike her sisters, she would talk back to him whenever he was mean. tl:dr; vesta got daddy issues;

she learned how to bake because she was the sister who spent most time with her mother. she has mixed feelings towards her and she never understood why she stays with someone like her father (something about cycles cycling...). vesta promised herself to never become someone like her mother;

vesta used to sell sweets she baked to get some money. she was very dear in the east end hills and very involved in the community life;

she wanted to own a bakery. it was her dream, that she ended up leaving aside as time passed by. she can't help but think that maybe her father was right about her;

vesta is not quite ambitious, but she always wanted more from life than what was given to her. that's all she would think, as she layed in her bed and stared at the ceiling, how she wanted more;

she knows how to dance and loved parties when she was younger. vesta was well-known in some bars around the region;

always wears golden hoop earrings + bracelets. in the capitol, she only wears inside home. she stopped wearing them in public;

very much religious, just like her own mother, and more traditional, unlike her father who was more pro-capitol. vesta is her first name, but her second name is a traditional one.
