Broke Horror Fan has an exclusive look at six pages from Essentials, an epic sci-fi graphic novel co-written by Black Sails star Luke Arnold and Napoleon Dynamite producer Chris "Doc" Wyatt.

It features artwork from DaNi (Sandman: The Dreaming), Glenn Fabry (Preacher), Jason Howard (Transformers), Vince Locke (A History of Violence), Brendan McCarthy (Spider-Man: Fever), Andrea Mutti (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and M.K. Perker (Air).

Essentials is the debut offering from The Lab Press. Exclusive editions - including covers by Fabry, Howard, and Bill Sienkiewicz (New Mutants) - are available through Kickstarter, which has far exceeded its goal.

In Essentials, mathematician Harris Pax predicted the end of the world but failed to prevent it. Now he’s living alone in a bunker and his niece’s favorite toys have started talking to him. The good news? He’s not the world’s sole survivor. The bad news? The other survivors are trapped in alternate realities — imprisoned in imagined worlds full of zombies, robots, mythical creatures, and chaos. And now Harris Pax and an unlikely ally must travel the country on a quest to restore reality, save humanity, and defeat his new interdimensional nemesis: Snuggles.

Harris Pax was the only scientist who anticipated the end of the world. Every other surviving human is now trapped in a subjective reality, disconnected from each other and the real world. Harris must now travel into the realities – each of them a fantastically distinct mini-universe – to convince the dreamer to leave the dream behind. We quickly learn that this is easier said than done, as most of us – no matter how depressing, frightening, or dangerous our thoughts may be – will cling to a world that we know and understand at all costs. On top of that, there is an evil entity hidden in each reality, attempting to force a much darker outcome

Essentials can seem complicated, jumping from reality to reality, but at the end of the day it’s a very easily communicated idea– the last human survivors of a massive cosmic disaster are now all off in their own bubbles of reality, and it’s one man’s mission to bring them out of their bubbles before they die in there.
