The Mosley Review: In A Violent Nature

Doing the unexpected and weird has always been at the forefront of the horror genre. In the slasher genre, perspective has also been the gateway to a fresh take on a typical story. We all know the classic story of a bunch of teens go out into the woods and some killer walks around killing them in gruesome ways and somehow there is a deeper lore tied to everything that gets explored enough to justify it all. Well, that doesn't change in this film, but what sets this one apart is that we are taken down this familiar path from the perspective of the killer. That truly intrigued me and made for an interesting concept that I think could've been handled a little better. I did like that it felt sort of like a nature documentary at times as you watch the killer stalk its prey, but there were times where the mystique wore off rather quickly and the film suffered for it in the end.

Ry Barrett was excellent as the killer and ever lumbering dark presence, Johnny. His size perfectly presents that level of fear and power as each step he takes through the woods and towards his targets was felt. I liked the lore behind Johnny and the special moment where we get a bit of his humanity back in a moment of peace. The campers all have their moments to shine and to be terrorized by Johnny and it was glorious. Sam Roulston as Ehren was good as the one that delivers the heavy lore. Johnny gets the most use out of him in a particularly hilarious way. Aurora and Brodie, played by Charlotte Creaghan and Lea Rose Sebastianis, were good and they are a showcase of the film, especially Aurora. Liam Leone was good as Troy and the reason why this whole massacre kicks off. Cameron Love was good as Colt as he nails the classic hero friend. Andrea Pavlovic was excellent as Kris and has the possibility of becoming a new scream queen on the rise. Reece Presley was great as The Ranger and has one of the most methodical scenes with Johnny that was another highlight of the film. Lauren Taylor was good as "The Woman" and her story sums up the overall allegory of the film, which was unnecessary in my opinion.

There isn't a score for the film which made for a more immersive experience. Typically you could hear the score kick in with the campers as they try to avoid danger or once a jump scare happens. I loved that it stayed consistent with the viewpoint of Johnny instead and his "music" was the violence. I always love a good ramp up of violence in these films and there's always that one kill that stands above the rest as the best. The sound design in this film was excellent and is especially on full display during the goriest death scene on a cliff side. Like I said before, there was a mystique to this film that was fully intact, but the sin of over indulgence struck in the last 20 minutes of the film. That block of exposition truly killed the pacing of the film and could've been completely cut out and the film would've been perfect. Not everything needs a expositionary tale to sum up what you just witnessed to be “high concept“. It was just very pretentious. Overall, I enjoyed this new take on what basically is a Friday the 13th film from the perspective of Jason Voorhees, but it's not something I would revisit too many times after. Reese Wilkerson, where would you even start with this boy? You could always say you hated him, that he made your blood boil, that the thought of him made you want to jump into on-coming traffic, but that wasn't enough, that was too ordinary. To keep it short and simple, you loathed him.

Now a lot of people hated him, but you, you had to take that number one spot.

Your hatred started in elementary school, you were sat soundly in your fourth grade class, doing your maths work. Then he walked in, you had heard of Reece before, as he had been a terror in the second grade class across the hall.

"Children, we have a new student today, well kind-of. This is Reese, he moved to this class from Miss Wiggin's class, let's all be the sweetest angels we can be to him!" Your teacher spoke gently. Looking back, you felt horrible for this woman, a young twenty-something lady, in her first year of teaching having to take on the devil in a eight year-olds body for a year.

The children in the class watched as he stood blankly staring at the back wall of the room, silent.

"Honey, how about you go sit next to y/n," your teacher sweetly instructed, "y/n can you please raise your hand."

This is where it started, this very moment. Reese stalked over to the empty seat next to you, deciding to kick your seat as forcefully as an eight year-old could before sitting down. This made your pen glide over the paper, directing on your finished work.

"Are you kidding me!" You yelped, slamming your pen down, before you could even face the menace that caused this, you could hear him giggling away.

Despite this interaction happening over seven years ago he still does the same giggle everytime he does something to ruin your day, which surprisingly is multiple times a day.

For once there was nothing he could do that would properly piss you off today, since it was halloween, and you were attending your best friend, Orla Presley's party.

You were sat with her in the lunch hall when he spotted you and strided over, "what is it today Reese?" You inquired looking up at the boy. "Wanting my lunch or something? Not surprised you are fat as fuck."

"Wow y/n, where's the kindness?" he taunted, placing his hand over his heart in faux-hurt.

"I'm not in the mood, take the hint and fuck off," you deadpanned in return, making him huff and walk away. "I hate that kid."

"Well y/n, I think he has a crush on you," Orla teased, wiggling her fingers in your face, making you start to laugh.

"Oh yeah, way to get the girl, bully her until she's sixteen, sure he does," you chuckled, pushing Orla's hand out of your face.

"Who knows?" She shrugged in response before starting to chat on about her party.

Orla waved to you as she walked the opposite way from the lunch hall, her having Spanish, and you having English. Then something harshly hit you on the back of the head, before thumping off the floor, it was a metal ball of some sort, then you heard the giggle and looked up to see Reese proudly smirking.

"What the fuck Reese! Leave me alone!" You screamed, walking up to him and bitch-slapping his cheek, "you are such a freak!"

For the first time ever, Reese actually looked upset by your words, he looked affected by your hatred. All he did in return was gulp and nod, before walking away in the direction of the main school doors.

"You what?" you shrieked, turning away from the light-up mirror in Orla's room to face her in shock.

She started nervously laugh, "I invited Reese Wilkerson," she repeated sheepishly.

"Why! Why would you do that?"

"I know you hate him, but maybe you need to give him a chance, you guys would be such a cute couple!" She insisted in a persuasive tone.

"Please get that thought out of your head Orla!" you begged, before turning back around to finish adding fake blood to your neck.

You and Orla were dressed as pathetic excuses for vampire, all you did was add fake blood to your lip and neck, and darken your under eyes. Outfit-wise you both wore matching flowy black skirts that cut off mid-thigh, with little burgundy off the shoulder knitted jumpers that showed more skin than it covered.

You were standing at the drinks table flirting with the captain of the football team, Leo Krint, when he walked in. Reese fucking Wilkerson.

He was wearing a skeleton morph suit, minus the mask, and grey sweatpants over the top. You watched as Orla walked straight over to him, pointing right at you. You had to say this threw you off, but then again you were stood right in front of the drinks table, that's probably what she was indicating towards, but you wanted to find out for sure.

"Leo, I need to go, I'll find you later," you hurriedly spoke, leaning up to place a kiss on his cheek.

"Sounds like a plan gorgeous," he replied, walking towards the group of footballers.

You swiftly walked over to Orla and Reece, latching onto your best friend's arm, "Orla, a word?"

"Yeah of course, I'll be right back Reece." He simply nodded before sending you a genuine smile, the first one you'd ever received from him, matter of fact, probably the first one he's ever did.

"Are you trying to set us up or something?" You inquired, crossing your arms.

"Ding, ding, ding," she chimed, grinning at you. Although you did not look pleased, "come on y/n! Give him a chance, I spoke to him earlier he really does like you!"

You hummed for a second, looking over at the boy, who was standing there looking around aimlessly. You had to admit he was pretty cute when he's being civil.

"I mean, he isn't totally ugly, and his smile is really pretty, infatuating really." You smiled softly, "but that doesn't mean I like his personality! It is stricly superficial!"

This made Orla beam, "see! you two would be perfect! Go talk to him!" She demanded, pushing you towards him, whisper-chanting 'go' in your ear.

When you got to him Orla took off to talk to someone else, "bitch," you muttered to yourself. "Hi Reese," you hesitantly spoke.

"I just want to say that I think you look really pretty right now, well you always look pretty, and I don't know why I wanted to make you hate me! Cause now we'll never be anything!" He rapidly blurted out, you making little to nothing out.

You started to laugh, "woah Reese, honey, slow down. I have no clue what you just said."

He started to scratch the back of his neck nervously, "I think you look really pretty, don't get me wrong you always look pretty, but you look beautiful right now."

This made your heart melt, without saying a word you grabbed his hand and walked outside, "if you think all that, then why are you so horrible to me?" you softly asked, still holding onto his hand.

"I don't know," he mumbled, "I know that I fucked up any chance I ever had with you."

"Reese, you'll still have a chance, because you're clearly a sweet boy, you just don't know what to do with yourself." you commented, smiling as you saw his face light up.

"I've been in love with you, since the first time I saw you in that third grade class." He confessed, looking away sheepishly the more he spoke.

All you could think to do in return was kiss him, so that is exactly what you did, your hands slid up his chest and around his neck to rest on the back of his head. Since he was atleast a head taller than you, you had to got up on your tippy toes to connect your lips with his.

His arms immediately snaked around your waist, pulling you flush against him. When the kiss broke he mumbled something about his parents being away out and his house being empty.

Now that was an unexpected night.

So I've been doing this magazine for 9 years now and you would think I would have streamlined the process for releases, but being that it is still mostly a one person operation over here with no real industry support or ad dollars, I'm still just doing my best. Each issue hinges on whatever time and money I have to throw into it with hopes of breaking even but mostly coming to terms with the reality that I am spending what others may spend on mortgages, or cars, or alcoholism to put out a skateboarding publication for my own sanity, grasping for a sense of purpose, and for the few of you actually appreciate it. One day I will come to my senses and give it up, but for now, it is somehow still moving along with no drop in quality. And while I know this seems like a pity party of one over here, it is really my segue into the theme of the new issue. Issue 12 has a Do-It-Yourself theme where we explore the concept of creating spots out of nothing. Just as I am creating a magazine with my own resources, accepting the loss of funds to produce something that brings me joy, skateboarders have been doing this for years. Every spot built by skaters using their own hard earned money has no monetary pay off but brings them joy, as well as netting some happiness for others who get to enjoy using the product of that labor. This issue explores the DIY mentality in skateboarding and its importance.
