ANGELA KANG: Christian Serratos volunteered for Rosita to die. When I made my rounds with the actors to talk to them about the final block of episodes, she expressed that she felt like the right thing for her character, and something that would be really good for the finale, was if her character died in trying to save Coco and in trying to make sure that the next generation had a shot in life. And she told me to think about it.
GREG NICOTERO: Christian came to me about six to eight months before we did that episode and said, "I want something really great for Rosita." She's like, "I want that character to go out strong." She said, "I think I might want to die, but if I die, I want to do something heroic. I want to die saving the children." So she came up initially with the idea, and I thought it was a really smart idea for her character.
KANG: We felt that there were some aspects of it that felt like we could pull from the Andrea idea in the comic — just the idea that there was a really important member of the cast doesn't make it, but that there is a chance for there to be a bit of a goodbye that felt like it was honoring the emotional intent of the comic as well as kind of fulfilling something that Christian said that she felt was important for her journey. And we try to take those things into account.
NICOTERO: As we got closer to it and then once the outline and then the script came out, she and I worked really, really hard to make sure that we captured the moments that we felt were critical to Rosita's storyline getting wrapped up.
She was 100 percent committed. It was a little different than previous scenarios, because her death had a very resounding meaning in the end of the series. We've had characters go on the show that weren't ready to go. But this was a different situation because she felt that dramatically, story-wise, it left Rosita in a better place than where she would've been if she would've just been part of everybody else just saying goodbye. So I give her a tremendous amount of credit for that. I think that she had fantastic instincts on that.

We would all like to know the top 25 books you’ve read this century please pleaseeeee 🙏🏽
(Context.)
OK, so the limitations I’m setting for myself are that these books must:
have been published some time after 1st January 2000 (in the edition I read them);
be good.
That’s it. The books are in alphabetical order by author’s surname, because there’s enough variety here that I wouldn’t feel comfortable (or rational) trying to rank each book objectively.
Fiction:
Bloodchild and Other Stories (2005) by Octavia E. Butler - The eponymous story is one of my favourite short stories of all time, and it counts within the time constraints because this is the second edition, with additional stories added. Butler’s commentary on her own works is always insightful.
Gone Girl (2012) by Gillian Flynn - Iconic story of an apex predator who wasn’t getting enough enrichment in her enclosure.
The Vegetarian [채식주의자] (2007) by Han Kang - Specifically the original version in Korean, not the translation.
Slave Play (2020) by Jeremy O. Harris - Very unsettling! The double (triple?) entendre in the title is a good summation of the play entire, I think.
OUT (2004) by Kirino Natsuo tr. Stephen Snyder - Often described as ‘feminist noir,’ Kirino’s writing explores the grimy underbelly of the daily lives of women and girls in modern Japan. Predictably, I have enjoyed all of her novels I’ve read.
The Sympathizer (2015) by Viet Thanh Nguyen - This novel is to me what Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land’ is as a poem to me. That will make sense if you’ve read both.
Theory of Bastards (2018) by Audrey Schulman - I adore every novel by Schulman I have read so far, but this one is definitely my favourite.
Impératrice (2003) by Shan Sa - I read this book as a teenager and was absolutely obsessed with it. Wu Zetian is boss.
Terminal Boredom (2021) by Suzuki Izumi tr. Polly Barton, Sam Bett, David Boyd, Daniel Joseph, Aiko Masubuchi, and Helen O’Horan - I also recommend the sequel collection by the same team, Hit Parade of Tears (2023).
Nonfiction:
Voices from Chernobyl (2005) by Svetlana Alexievich tr. Keith Gessen - Originally published in 1997, but I read the English translation first. I recommend everything Alexievich has ever written, honestly.
The Captive Woman’s Lament in Greek Tragedy (2006) by Casey Dué - You know when you read a book and it makes you feel like your entire body has been transferred to a different plane of existence? I love Dr. Dué’s writing about Euripides and Greek tragedy so freaking much.
Delusions of Gender (2010) by Cordelia Fine - If you’ve ever been trying to explain to a bigot that ‘basic biology’ is not as straightforward as ‘male brain’ vs. ‘female brain,’ this is the book for you. Dr. Fine is super knowledgeble, and the book is excellent at explaining the relevant neuroscience while debunking misogynistic and transphobic misconceptions about how the human brain functions.
How To Survive a Plague (2016) by David France - Really comprehensive book on the history of the AIDS epidemic and how it was solved.
The Landmark Herodotus: The Histories (2007) tr. Andrea Purvis ed. Robert Strassler - The entire Landmark series is excellent, and I highly recommend it. I chose the Herodotus because the maps really are invaluable, but the Thucydides and Arrian were close seconds.
People Love Dead Jews (2021) by Dara Horn - My favourite joke from this book is when Horn describes Anne Frank as ‘everyone’s second-favourite dead Jew... after, of course, Jesus.’
Arguments with Silence: Writing the History of Roman Women (2014) by Amy Richlin - Really I recommend everything Richlin has ever written, but I would like to specifically acknowledge her essay ‘Hijacking the Palladion’ (1992), which remains one of the best articles I’ve ever read on feminism and classics.
Appropriate: A Provocation (2021) by Paisley Rekdal - Really really interesting thinky book about cultural appropriation, appreciation, and interaction.
19 Ways of Looking at Wang Wei (with More Ways) (2016) by Eliot Weinberger - OK, this book is from 1987, but the expanded edition is eligible. This is a delightful and informative, albeit short, explanation of (some of) the difficulties inherent in translation.
Poetry:
The Collected Poems (2010) by Ai - This is also kind of cheating… Ai’s best poetry can be found in her Killing Floor (1973), which is included in this anthology.
The Iliad (2015) tr. Caroline Alexander - I enjoyed Emily Wilson’s translations of Homer as well, but Alexander’s translation of the Iliad is the first complete translation into English by a woman, ever. That’s really cool. Also, it’s a very good translation; I definitely prefer it to Wilson’s translation of the same. (I could go on for hours about the differences in translations of Homer.)
Phone Bells Keep Ringing for Me (2020) by Choe Seungja tr. Won-Chung Kim and Cathy Park Hong - My absolute favourite poetry by Choe Seungja can be found in her book ‘내 무덤, 푸르고’ (1993), some of which can be found in this collection of translated poetry.
Unfortunately, It Was Paradise (2003) by Mahmoud Darwish tr. Munir Akash and Carolyn Forché (with Sinan Antoon and Amira El-Zein) - This is cheating, somewhat, since I originally read most of Darwish’s poems in Arabic, and those versions were published mostly before the relevant time period. However, I do consider this translated collection of his works to be one of my favourite books, especially now that I have ‘edited’ it by hand-writing the Arabic versions of the poems in the margins. It counts.
Li Shang-yin (2018) tr. Chloe Garcia Roberts - Li Shangyin is one of my favourite Tang-dynasty poets, and this bilingual(!) edition of his poems is an excellent read.
Ilias und Odyssee (2008) tr. Johnn Heinrich Voß - Yes, another translation of Homer. Voß’s translation is from the late 18th century, but this particular edition has a bunch of specific appendices and stuff...! Anyway, this translation rocks.
Yi Sang: Selected Works (2020) tr. Jack Jung, Sawako Nakayasu, Don Mee Choi, and Joyelle McSweeney - Once again this is on the line, because I definitely prefer Yi Sang’s writing in the original Korean/Japanese... no translation adequately captures his style, in my opinion, but this one comes the closest.
Closing thoughts:
I do not usually read a lot of newer books (backlog, you know how it is), so I am extremely out of touch with the current literary zeitgeist. This is mostly by design. All of my favourite books in French, for example, were published before 1990, and my single favourite book (Les Misérables) was published in the mid-19th century.
Several of the books on this list I originally read in a different language (mostly French), but I’ve included the English version here if it’s the original OR if it’s the relevant edition for the timeframe.
This was incredibly difficult. Mostly because I had to flip through each book to see if it fit the requirements. I would be much better at curating a list of my favourite 100 books of the 20th century, I think. Or of the 19th century. Or even further back.
Everything about this list is subject to change 😅

29. How many books do you have on your 'to-be-read' list?
199 lmao...i have a slightly smaller to-read list for this year that focuses on just books i own physical copies of but haven't read yet. that one is 35 books rn...
32. Name your favorite author(s).
hmmm ok gonna try to make this list like. authors who i've read multiple works from & enjoyed as opposed to just really liking one novel or series so. hannah moskowitz for sure. also victor hugo and mervyn peake...kurt vonnegut...neil gaiman...have also read & enjoyed multiple works by han kang, ursula k. leguin, octavia butler, and gabriel garcia marquez but i feel less familiar w them so...not sure if i'd confidently call them favorites...have also read a lot from v.e. schwab but not sure if she'd quite make the favorites list either bc there's wider variance in how much i like her works...
for nonfiction donna j. haraway, judith butler, leslie feinberg, bell hooks, audre lorde, angela y. davis, andrea long chu, gloria anzaldua, and lee edelman
for poetry louise gluck, e.e. cummings, natalie diaz, franny choi, and richard siken
43. Title of a book you own that's in the worst physical condition you have. Explain what happened to it. Post a picture if you want.
not by my bookshelves rn so can't take a pic but pretty sure it's animorphs book #6 the capture which i found at a used bookstore & half the cover is like...ripped + falling apart. i buy animorphs books pretty much anytime i find them in a used bookstore tho regardless of condition so <3

Top 10 kdrama friendships that had me bawling
#10 - alchemy of souls : mu deok/bo yeon + the boys
Tumblr media
the only reason this doesnt get a higher rating is because they just didnt have enough scenes together. it was always pretty secondhanded, like the boys helping her with her servant exam in s1, or scenes between seo yul and mu deok/bo yeon. however, their friendship was amazing, and just adore this show in itself.
#9 - doom at your service : tak dong kyung, na ji na and cha joo ik
Tumblr media
okay, they weren't a trio, necessarily, but they had such a great friendship through indirect interaction. joo ik and dong kyung had such a wholesome excited little sister and passive older brother relationship. and dont even get me started on the cuteness that was the friendship between na ji na and tak dong kyung.
#8 - strong girl do bong soon : do bong soon and gyeong shim
Tumblr media
i wrote about this in my review of strong girl dbs as well, and the friendship between gyeong shim and dbs was so cool because both women were willing to go to such lengths for each other. one of the lesser-highlighted friendships of kdramas.
#7 - crash course in romance : nam haeng son and kim young joo
Tumblr media
it takes a lot to sacrifice your national sports for your friend, and young joo made that sacrifice like a pro. their friendship was so cute, a bit annoying at times, but cute nonetheless. they were there for each through the goods and the bads, and that's all we really ask for.
#6 - lovestruck in the city : lee eun oh, suh rin i and kang geon
Tumblr media
why! are! they! not! talked! about! ultimate peak best friendship, no romantic subplots to this gang, absolute delights. everyone should give lovestruck in the city a try.
#5 - twenty five twenty one : the gang
Tumblr media
how could i say friendship and not have these people. this gang singlehandedly and platonically had enemies to besties, childhood besties, sunbae besties and just everything. right in the feels.
#4 - weightlifting fairy kim bok joo : the trio + the boys
Tumblr media
the 'swag' trio. every time they did the swag thing it made me cringe so bad but they were very cute. the rooftop scene was legit so cute and the addition of the boys was even better. nothing beats these weightlifting girls and we stan.
#3 - extraordinary attorney woo : woo young woo and choi su yeon
Tumblr media
this was sosososososo cute. the way su yeon was literally always there for young woo. she couldve easily been a villain, young woo took the guy she had a crush on, was higher in grades and well known. had an influential background. such telltale signs of bad women in kdramas. BUT this amazing person really was so good with young woo and totally spring sunshine su yeon.
#2 - the fabulous - the gang
Tumblr media
everyone seems to hate the fabulous. genuinely, come at me. i dont give a shit about cinematic art or marketing strategies or whatever, this is my opinion gonna stick to it. i ADORED the fabulous. their gang was so amazing, the definition of supportive, cute and somehow maintaining that joke around stuff. they had their little pairs in the middle as well, but that didnt take away the overall love. go watch it.
#1 - hospital playlist - the band
Tumblr media
im a recent to hosplay bandwagon, but. i fell in love. finished the (almost) entire show in nearly a week, an achievement considering it's my finals rn. we've got the piggies, buddha who is catholic, the guy who knows everybody and his dad. it was the little things with them for me, really. when they called jeong won andrea like that was so cute. when jun wan called seok hyeong ik jun's dad it made me laugh so much. and the fact that they're really not that close when u think about it but they still are? like that is adult friendships and we love.

✨☕️ The Jaehee Week 2022 Schedule is Here!
Hello! And, finally, welcome to…. Jaehee Week 2022! ✨💛
A creation event to celebrate Jaehee Kang’s birthday that will take place the least week of December, with every day having a new prompt.
Here is the schedule for this year!
Tumblr media
The theme is “A word + a quote.” You can choose to create something based on both, or only one of them, or combine if you wish. The goal here is to inspire creativity!
Here’s a list of the prompts, for your convenience:
day 1 (25/12): mistletoe - “all my heart longs for, fulfill” [Immortal Aphrodite, Sappho]
day 2 (26/12): honey - “I cannot deny myself any longer.” [Una Llum Tímida, Andrea Puig & Africa Alonso Bada]
day 3 (27/12): arabica - “open your life, open your hands.” [I Don’t Want To Live A Small Life, Mary Oliver]
day 4 (28/12): cupcake - “love liberates. It doesn’t bind. Love says I love you.” [Maya Angelou]
day 5 (29/12): film - “the lights go off and that’s when I know you.” [Una Llum Tímida, Andrea Puig & Africa Alonso Bada]
day 6 (30/12): dance - “I bet you could sometimes find all the mysteries of the universe in someone’s hand.” [Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Benjamin Aliré Saenz]
day 7 (31/12): ring - “under the water, I know of a timeless place.” [Una Llum Tímida, Andrea Puig & Africa Alonso Bada]
Any and all creations are allowed! Whether it’s fanart, fanfiction, graphics… so long as it has Jaehee as the main focus, everything is welcome. Go crazy go wild!
Please, tag your creations with #JaeheeWeek22 as well as the day, so for example, #JHW01, #JHW02.. etc. If you post on ao3, please use this tags too.
You don’t have to submit everything in the day. It’s okay to post a couple days late, this event is just for fun! So, don’t stress about it.
…And that’s everything. If you have any questions, please send an ask, and we’ll be happy to reply.
Hope everyone has fun during this week, and happy early birthday, Jaehee Kang 💛✨

Just finished ep 6 of the Good bad mother and while I overall really like the show there’s somethings that annoy me lol
- any scene with Andrea! What is the point they really don’t do anything, unless they’re planning to make him some important guy who will help them all at some point but even then the scenes feel forced and unnecessary
-the annoying ass trot singer, can’t stand him and he feels utterly pointless. We’ve already seen them trying to get rid of her and after being with them for so long to even entertain the thought is super stupid and pointless bc they backed down (never should have listened to him in the first place)
-the fact that we’re basically half way through the drama and he hasn’t regained his memory (mostly bc I feel like when he does the story will be rushed to fit in the rest of kang ho’s plot)
-the mom having cancer which will most likely force reconciliation and forgiveness between them (saw it from a mile away) are there any kdramas out there where the characters don’t forgive their abusive guardians and just tell them to F off???
Anyways excited for the new eps specifically for some development with Mi Joo (the dinner scene killed me 😭). I can’t wait for him to regain his memories and be good to her(and his children)!!! Also the thugs and their imaginary farm and house were too funny. Interested in how they’ll deal with all the corruption and shady stuff Kang ho was involved in and am praying for the downfall of the prosecutor, prosecutors daughter, and the gangster lol
On a side note I saw a comment somewhere saying Kang ho needs to apologize to his mom and like wtfffff? His mom owes him the biggest apology and him being a dick to her before he lost his memory is 100% justified, she’s lucky he even gave her the time of day.

hey salem 🖤🖤 i was wondering, and sorry if you've answered this before, but what are your must-read books? like ones you just have to recommend because they're so good? i really need to get back into reading...
this is SUCH. a good question and i WILL go into heavy detail!!!!
my obvious recs are the secret history and the goldfinch by donna tartt and the picture of dorian gray by oscar wilde - timeless perfections. now for more:
the idiot by fyodor dostoyevsky - a TRUE classic, that people somehow forget about very often. will change your world view.
maurice by e. m. forster - another classic. made me believe in love. one of the first openly gay books written in 1929, and to this day, one of the few with a happy ending.
the master and margarita by mikhail bulgakov - ok last classic but SUCH a fun, wild ride. come for the fun, stay for the genuine masterpiece.
the millennium trilogy by stieg larsson (the girl with the dragon tattoo) - some of the best books i’ve ever read, and my first time seeing another autistic character. y’all know i got all love for these books, and the swedish adaptation is brilliant too.
invisible monsters by chuck palahniuk - ok way to stick to my brand but it might be my favourite book ever. such a humane story, but also genuinely tragic. funny and relatably dark.
the vegetarian by han kang - feminism! pondering! morality! ethics! an amazing exploration of mental illness, food, and family.
nightbitch by rachel yoder - i won’t recommend this to everyone i meet but if i rec it to you, i like you and think you’re weird!! a tale of a first time mother turning into a dog. incredibly moving.
beartown and a man called ove by fredrik backman - he continuously breaks my heart and i love it. the atmosphere and descriptions in his books are so unique and chilly. some of the most well written characters i’ve ever met.
paul takes the form of a mortal girl by andrea lawlor - if you’ve ever experimented with or just been interested in gender identity as a whole, you MUST read this book about paul, who can change and bend gender at will.
almond by won pyong sohn - deeply sad, yet hopeful novel about a boy who doesn’t feel emotions or empathy like most people. a whole new perspective on relationships.
now for some honorable mentions i often suggest: a certain hunger by chelsea g summers, the argonauts by maggie nelson, boy parts by eliza clarke, hell followed with us by andrew joseph white, out by natsuo kirino, milk fed by melissa broder, these violent delights by micah nemerever, on earth we’re briefly gorgeous by ocean vuong.

Maria Clara at Ibarra: Isang Obra
You’ve done it again, GMA. KUDOS. Lemme just say this. I am one full-blooded Kapamilya. But when I was younger, I remember watching and being obsessed with Mulawin, Majika, and especially the original 2006 Encantadia. Feeling ko forte talaga ng GMA ang “Telefantasya” genre. And now, another timely gem has been created. Isang napakagandang proyekto, GMA. Ngayon na lamang muli napakapanood ng serye na likha ninyo, and I’m really glad I did. 🫶🏻
Why I LOVE this teleserye??! Ang paksa ng drama ay napapanahon at edukasyonal para sa ating lahat. Liban sa kilig at mga nakakatuwang hirit, parang isang pagbabalik-tanaw at pagpapaalala sa mga nakalipas na panahon. Also, casting was SPOT ON!!! Barbie was perfect for the role, Klay (sobrang kaaliw! #feminism #notooppression besh). The perfect representation of what a Pinoy youth should be now. Crisostomo Ibarra giving me extra oppa vibez. Sa pagkakatanda ko super crush ko na before si Dennis Trillo sa Majika pero omg, tinatangi ko po kayo ginoo (ipagpatawad mo, Ate Jen hihi). The super talented Julie Ann as Maria Clara was surprising for me. ‘Twas actually unbeknownst to me that she can act like this. I’m amazed! I know she sings, she dances, and she can act too? (sige ipinapaubaya ko na talaga si Rayver ahahaha). Sa totoo lang, nahihirapan na ko pag nakikita ko silang umiiyak ni Barbie. I’m like, unli luha lang mga amiga? 🙌🏼 Also, I am now understanding why David Licauco has everyone in his clutches. (yung kaibigan ko, pipilahan ka talaga eh. see you soon kapag makakapaglamierda kami jan sa maynila hahaha). Fidel, isa kang tunay at tapat na amigo. Talk about character development, right? 🥲
Padre Salvi, Padre Damaso, pinakulo niyo po ang aking dugo, pinabilis ninyo ang tibok ng aking puso sa inis at galit. It’s my first time seeing Juancho Triviño as an actor. I know I knew him from somewhere, so ayun hubby nga pala siya ni Joyce Pring. He fits the role of PS to a tee! The amount of hate and disgust for the character just showed his effective acting. Of course, you would expect greatness with the likes of Mr. Tirso Cruz III, but I must say these younger actors leveled up too.
Andrea Torres as Sisa?! Speechless. 👏🏻 Dasurv ng award at recognition sa binigay niya dito. And, it is always a delight to see Rocco Nacino. The perfect Elias. Mahilig talaga ako sa chinito maputi ganyan pero for some reason, I crush you po.🫶🏻 (pasintabi rin kay mareng Mel wew?).
All in all, sobrang naaliw at napasaya ako ng kwentong ito. Sana ay makalikha pa po kayo ng mga proyektong katulad nito. Dinggin niyo kami! ✊🏼😉 Viva Las Filipinas!! 🇵🇭 Sana nga ay tuluyan na tayong makalaya. 🙏🏼
