Yo, Welcome to my photography blog!

This is a photography project with a focus on older digital cameras sold before the mid 2000s. I've been working with these sorts of cameras since 2022, which grew from my interest in retro computers that I have had since 2020 or so. Here, I'll introduce you to my cameras, my computer rig, and try to convince you that this is a cool hobby.

General Q & A:

Whats in the name? - Kb refers to Kilobyte, all of the photos I take with these cameras only take up a little over 100 Kilobytes of digital storage per photo. FD refers to the physical media the photos are stored in, currently one camera uses floppy disks (FD), the other two use compact flash (CF) and smart media (SM) cards. unfortunately, their shortened forms do not rhyme and so they do not matter.

What can I expect from this blog? - amateur photography using old cameras, I guess. I'll say some nonsense below each photo but you're free to ignore it. I don't plan on reblogging anything here, so don't expect that. I am the star of this blog. me me me. I tend towards finding weird buildings/architecture, "liminal spaces", sunsets, and generally trying to see how well I can make a photo look like a blender render in a Kane pixels video. don't expect any consistency, though. the medium will remain the same but the vibes will absolutely fluctuate with my mood. I'll try and tag things correctly if it's off putting.

Are you a cool person? - I tend to be! I don't want this place to be alienating for anybody but assholes who don't deserve to see the stuff I do. being a tumblr blog, I follow a lot of the standard stuff. jerks are not welcome and I'm not gonna give you the pleasure of an argument if you do turn your head round these parts.

My Cameras

Mavica FD-7

released in 1997, this was the second of Sony's "Digital Mavica" line of cameras. it records photos of around 50Kbs in size to a standard 3 1/2" floppy disk. it has some standard features like a manual focus wheel, 10x optical zoom, and exposure control. I haven't found a strict source but I believe this camera is less than one megapixel. I actually have a few different Mavica cameras (a fd-71/75/83/85/87 and a cd-1000) but they aren't different from the fd-7 enough to justify being used often. I'll make note on individual posts if I use 'em at all.

Kodak DC220

released in 1999, with a quality of exactly one megapixel the DC 220 is a weird little thing. it has custom software, connects to a computer via com ports with a transfer speed of ~11,000 bit/s. (roughly 30-60 seconds per photo in my experience) you can add custom text to your photos in the cameras built in software, and attach custom audio to each photo. it is a pain in the butt to get working, but it's quirks make it worth the frustration.

Olympus E-10

made in 2000 with a quality of a whopping four megapixels, the Olympus E-10 is the newest addition to my collection, and possibly the nicest camera I'll ever own. it's a fixed lens DSLR camera capable of 4x zoom, you can easily adjust the aperture and exposure on the fly, it's photos tend to be a whole 100kb in size (1/10th of a megabyte!) and to be entirely honest I have no idea how to use it. but I will eventually!

My Computer

I try to use all era-appropriate tech to transfer photos and do any edits, this is the computer I do all that processing on! its a Dell Optiplex gx1- the daddy of pretty much any computer used in public schools (Chromebooks don't count) It's got a Pentium 3 CPU clocking at 500MHz, 512mb ram, running windows ME. it has all the original Kodak DC220 software installed, and I can't really access the Kodak's photos any other way. I've also got a few other weird bits attached to it -an HP sketch pro cad tablet and an external data cartridge SCSI device. both work, but I don't really bother to use them, they just look neat.

didn't want to dump this in the fan week tag because it's TECHNICALLY not FFIV but "crossover" did make me think of it.

this also isn't technically a "crossover" given that its entirely in-universe and just happens to be directly RELATED to FFIV but i wanted to talk about it and i figured out how to use my 6yo chromebook as a drawing tablet last night so here goes

i have this FFXIV OC who is quite literally "Edward but an evil bug demon" and i got so attached to him i'm making a whole-ass doll, with some help from my friend for some of the more complex engineering parts. here's some of my design sketches and color tests and what will eventually be his torso (he's being made out of a kind of butterfly-skeleton lookin BJD). It's mostly head shots because i was clearly struggling a lot with how to do the hair and the placement of the eyes, though i think i've sorta figured it out. the final outfit will have a diadem that kind of incorporates the eyes and antennae.

the strings-between-arms idea was from before i was offered the doll with the hollow torso, and i ended up abandoning it for structural reasons anyway. he still has four arms, though, two with human hands and two that are more mantis adjacent, which will have those white-and-blue stripes found on the Antlion's mandibles in Amano's concept art. It will be a bit difficult to rig on the torso, given it's just a ribcage held up by a spine, but i think it's doable as long as the additional arms are smaller

i'm not sure on the actual SHAPE of the antennae -- was kind of thinking something feather-like, but that might be too far into moth territory.

i was like "oh i definitely need the hairstyle to resemble Edward's so it's obvious who he's supposed to be riffing off of!" but as it turns out: Edward does not have an "iconic" haircut. Most every image of him has something different.

the character's name is Prince Orfeo of the Heartless Harp, once the sovereign of the Golden Principate of Damcyan before the world fell into darkness, now a voidsent whose beautiful face and enchanting voice mask the rapaciousness of a predatory insect.

FFXIV lore and how it relates to FFIV lore under the cut but the short version is: i saw the words "damcyan antlion" in a dungeon and went fully insane

OK SO the 13th/the Void ended up with a lot of FFIV inspiration. That's perfect for me as the Void has been kind of my Thing since i started playing

the basic concept of the Void is kind of like, it's a world where the heroes failed -- one way or another, by deception or hubris or simply dying and being reborn as twisted monsters, they all became the villains. to this end we get the hero version of Golbez, of course, but like...

in the Lunar Subterrane dungeon, you delve into the hero Golbez's memories of his final moments, in which he and Durante are struggling to repel an invasion of Baron. the environment is a little...desert-y to be a one-to-one match for the FFIV Baron, which i already thought was interesting, but then Durante laments "nothing is exempt from their avarice" right before we get to the second boss fight of the dungeon: Damcyan Antlion

i thought it was really interesting that it was specifically a DAMCYAN antlion, because that immediately made me think -- wait, if this is effectively the "opposite" of FFIV, is Damcyan the invading force here? the antlion's boss mechanics involve dragging you into sand pits and crashing into pillars to bring them down, so it sure does make an effective siege weapon... hey, didn't they mention "avarice"? Some supplemental FFIV stuff mentions that Damcyan is extremely wealthy, to the extent that money is literally named after their ruling dynasty...

oh my god is there an evil version of Edward on the 13th

besides 2/3 of the entire student body at my school (half joking but i am constantly verbally and physically bullied bc im disabled and visibly queer) . theres this one piece of shit Mr Timothy "Timmy" B******* whos the band director at our school who wont let me join ANY music class bc im disabled. as soon as i signed up for band he suddenly spontaneously instated a new rule that everyone signing up for any band class had to first take a full year of marching band . i physically cant do that on account of my disability so we were like Hey i cant do that on account of my disability can we perhaps negotiate some accommodations. nasty ableist grown ass bald ass string bean of a man timmy whips out his phone at this meeting and types in the name of my condition and reads for a couple seconds while we just fucking stare at him and he says back "welll it says here on google that less than 200 people in the World are diagnosed so i dont believe you :/ !." we were gonna get the school board involved and/or file an ocr complaint abt it bc he just would Not even allow any accomodation for me but my mom decided it wasnt worth the trouble </3 pretty sure hes entirely forgot about me at this point but every time i see him in the hallway or one of his students i briefly consider ripping his bald head off. what who said that

so.. where to start?

Meet Amy! Her family moved to [insert town name] when she was six, and she's been living there ever since! She's super extroverted and is friends with about everybody. Amy loves music and baking (her cookies are literally the best) and plays her dad's guitar! She likes to think that she's an artist, but she's absolutely horrible. She tries.

Meet Max, Amy's next door neighbor and best friend! He's very, VERY shy but doesn't act like it around Amy. He's super kind and caring, and a little bit of a goofball. He's lived in [town name] his whole life, but before Amy his only friend was his older brother.

The day Amy moved in, Max knocked on her door to meet her, and they instantly clicked! During the summer they met, they hung out a bunch and played together a lot. I have a few scenes from when they were little planned out, if you want I can share those :D

Between when Amy moved in and the main story, there are lots of various scenes and stuff, also Amy's dad died when she was seven or eight. He was a musician and loved playing guitar, Amy picked up his guitar soon after his passing and discovered she was actually pretty good and she loves writing her own songs!

The story takes place when they are both in 9th grade (both of them are fourteen, Max's birthday is in February and Amy's in August). Amy starts having weird creepy dreams about this dark world and falling (it's all very vague and unplanned right now lol) and one day she gets all feverish and passes out in class and Max has to help walk/carry her home (they live like five minutes from the school and walk to and from school together). When she wakes up she learns she has psychic powers when she almost burns her house down.

Amy keeps having these odd dreams, full of her worst fears, when one night a bunny appears in her dream. The next morning, there's a bunny cuddling her in her bed. She names him Luna, and takes him in as a pet. A few days after getting him, Max starts appearing in her dreams, a creepy dude with a knife poised over him.

Then, Max disappears.

She goes on a quest into her nightmare world to find and save Max, Luna at her side and a bucket load of magic powers to discover. In the end, Amy ends up finding Max in this evil wizard/king (or something idk), brainwashed and a slave to his royal majesty. Max ends up dying or something and Amy gives up her life to save him with a rare power, not knowing if she'll make it out alive.

Max wakes up in his room, no memory of the king, but a bad feeling that something terrible had happened. He goes to Amy's house to tell her about it, but he can't find her. He tries calling her. No response. He does find Luna, who somehow made it back to Amy's room. Luna helps guide him to where Amy is found, laying peacefully. Max checks for a heartbeat.

Nothing.

Amy wakes up anyways lol, they go back to school and they totally don't get traumatized!

And uhh yeah that's kind of how it will play out? I'm sure you can tell how little I actually have planned, it's just a vague storyline right now, but I do have a lot of random but very specific scenes planned out if you'd like to hear! Just got to find a way to work them in to the story lol

And my very unreasonable dream is to eventually make a show.. but we'll see how that goes LOL

one time I was looking at wikihow on my school Chromebook (as one does) and I kept seeing this one wikihow article for "how to tie a noose" and I knew I shouldn't click it, especially on a school chromebook, but I KEPT seeing it and eventually gave into temptation (bc why the hell would the average person want to know that) and I got a beautiful two second glimpse of "Halloween decoration" before the site was blocked by goguardian. and then the school called my dad to let him know and he had to go to my room and ask why the hell I clicked the article "how to tie a noose"

In my dream last night, I was substituting for a math class, one of my former coworkers from a previous job was in the room to help with additional support, so we got to catch up a bit, and one of the people who used to bully me in junior high was still in school, in one of the other classes. Because of this, the current round of students in the 12th grade math class were familiar with him.

And boy howdy did they not like him. In the years since I'd last seen him, apparently he went off and became a werewolf, and not like a cool impressive werewolf either. He transformed into a tiny werewolf puppy, and considering he still wasn't nice to people, the class found this hilarious.

Equipped with zero training on how to deal with bullying, and obviously having never figured it out on my own in my own time, in my dream I was tasked with trying to convince these students that bullying is bad, and not to make fun of the fellow, and eventually I let the information slip that he used to bully me when I was in school.

Such information entered me into the gossip inner circle, I suppose, because they only started telling me more. Did I want to know? Somewhat. Was I allowed to show them I wanted to know? Absolutely not.

Also, one of the students played a YouTube stream on their laptop (somehow not a Chromebook...?) in class while working on the math worksheet, and in it, a youtuber known for having a very exuberant and fun presentation in his videos ended up joining up with these right-wing conspiracy freaks in Florida to go out in an old canoe and poach crocodiles. They sent him specifically out into the water at the crocs with a giant ass rifle, and he tried to swim with this rifle but obviously that was a bad idea, and he had to turn around and swim back to the boat. I wondered how he went so wrong.

I guess this was all too much for me to keep dreaming about, because the next dream cut in soon and it was Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes floating down a river taking pieces of giant foods from the side of the river while warning the audience about avoiding murderers getting into their houses.

Currently Reading:  Ok... so... I actually haven't read any sort of published novel since... 2011, with A Storm of Crows I think? So I used to read a shit ton, but it was 11th grade and my friends were like 'You're still reading kids books? Read something for grown ups instead' (I was rereading Percy Jackson at the time, my beloved). So I gave it a try with a 'grown up' fantasy series and... fuck GoT it was awful and I decided if that's what adult literature was like, I didn't want any part of it. So I quit reading entirely.

Last Movie: Bullet Train, months ago. I don't like watching movies - I'm huge into the behind the scenes stuff, cinematography, lighting, direction, costume design etc etc so it makes it hard to watch movies when my brain won't stop analyzing and criticizing everything (honestly modern cinema is so full of people just 'sending it' for the next big paycheck, the heart is just gone). But my husband insisted I watch this one and you know what? It was actually really well made, I was impressed.

Craving: More time. More time to finish these cosplays (Twelve have mercy the con is in a week and a half), more time to write, more time to decompress. Also craving a Chromebook/laptop/portable writing device that doesn't freeze when I type more than 5 letters in a row...

Other than that the last non-scripted show I watched was Restaurant: Impossible.

Any pets: Uh... yeah. I myself have two horses. And then... we have a shit ton of cats. So in 2020 strays kept showing up at our house and then they'd have babies, eventually we managed to catch them all and get them fixed and now some of them have chosen to move in. Shelters are full all across the state, rescues and fosters are full. So now we have... 10 cats that live inside (it's a large house) and then another six/seven that are still feral outside but fixed at least. Nothing much we can do about it, but keeping them inside keeps them safe and saves the wildlife outside, too.

Do you have a crush on anyone: An eternal crush on my husband. He's just amazing. Soft. Adorable. Handsome. Perfect. Goofy. Gorgeous. Smart. Creative. Loving. So many more words. 12 years together in May!

Favourite fictional character: Assuming player characters/WoLs don't count, Elena Fisher from Uncharted. She was the first female character I encountered who was just... normal. Not a token female, not sexualized eye candy, not walking boobs without a personality, she was... a real person, a real character in her own right, whose gender didn't change who she was. And I fell in love with that back in 2007 (I was in middle school then, so it was kind of a big deal for me). She only got better as the years went by, I still love her.

The last place you traveled: Depends on your definition of 'travel'. On a literal sense probably Portland, but since both that and Seattle are practically in my backyard I don't really count those. Other than that, Philadelphia I think, for a wedding.

hi everyone. i have a tale.

i remember a few years ago when i'd play pokemon showdown on my school chromebook out of boredom. I had made this team I was incredibly proud of. I can't remember most of it, but there was like, a Golem and a bunch of other random-ass pokemon. I was very dumb and had not a clue what i was doing.

Fast forward a bit, I've changed the team some, in my brain it is perfect. Because of this I go on the forums, and find a section called "Rate My Team". I was ecstatic. Thinking of all the validation I could receive for my amazing team. I made a post, describing my team. Going into detail about how each pokemon was strong and cool. I'd seen in a rules thing that you need good descriptions, and honey, I gave it my absolute all.

When I'm done, I post it, and start anxiously waiting. I can't remember how long it was, but eventually, I got one. And please, understand... i am a young, dumb child, who is always in need of validation and awful at taking criticism. I am genuinely thinking my dumb team with a Golem is worthy of top tier and that all the losses I've faced thus far are the opponent getting lucky.

This guy tore me to fucking shreds. And he was being a dramatic bitch about it to!!! Hit me with the "I only come on this site sometimes to get in my quota of responses....... and I always find teams like...... this........" He just went on, and on, and on, no team synergy, no understanding of proper support or bulk or setup or whatever. Had my dumbass holding back tears in math class. I immediately deleted the post out of shame and embarrassment.

So uh, the moral of the story is that that guy was a jerk lol.

hm, tough one. for me, as a self-named autodidact, i always have thought that any computing system, in both User interface, User Experience, “Hack”ability, and foolproof simplicity, were paramount virtues for a solid computing environment.

In particular i always took a liking to the elegant rigidity of source code, and i had the autist desire to decipher it best i could.

I had bought a toshiba school chromebook from my school district after they got new models, and i heard of this cool thing called “Ubuntu”. a friend of mine at the time, offered me a link with the steps to set up SeaBIOS native legacy booting on this chromebook, to which i installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on.

I grew up in a macOS household so the Unity Desktop environment used in Ubuntu at that time, was very welcoming.

After learning the Ubuntu commands, I got hooked. I quickly grew a special interest/appreciation for Unix-like systems, and eventually I read “The Humane Interface”- by Jef Raskin, an ex-Apple interface designer, and his rather radical approach to computing further fueled my interest in computing interfaces.

There are a number of other Key Points in my life that kept my drive in computing. I have landed on OpenBSD for a number of reasons, that i will quickly attempt to summarize here:

Predictability of system, lean code is important

On machine documentation is the most important on a system. Badly written manpages are considered a bug, not a flaw or a quirk.

Stupidly Stable. As a stoner, i can be fairly reckless on my systems. I run gentoo linux as well, but i seldom run it when in the clouds. GNU/Linux, when asked, will essentially give you the keys to the car, and the US missile codes, with not a care of the consequences. OpenBSD, on the otherhand, keeps a tight “shackle” per se, on my rather chaotic neutral antics when i’m swimming the seas of Santraginus V. OpenBSD has been my personal tried and true system.

@daemonhxckergrrl is who i will tag here, i don’t interact with most w//ckies on here, i could give a rat’s #sh if people care what i spew. But, they seem to have similar views in computing, and i see fit.

I have really bad news, guys.

For some fucking reason, the Internet isn't working on my laptop. I'm forced to use my phone's hotspot for Wifi, but it's data internet and not actually Wifi. And things eventually got slow on my laptop, until I couldn't even access my docs for my stories anymore. I knew it would eventually get slow, but that's not the worst of it.

Now my Chromebook is useless without internet, and my phone refuses to let me turn the hotspot back on. No clue why.

This means that until I can somehow figure out how to fix this and speed up the internet again to actually USE it, I have to type up Lesterverse and Shatterverse on my phone, which is NOT ideal. Chapters are going to take much longer to do. I sooo much prefer a physical keyboard rather than a tiny digital one.

Trust me everyone, this is worse on me than you. I want to share my stories with you all, but right now I have to use an alternative I don't like using. I wanted ch 3 of the AU out already, but this seriously affected its progress. I'm hoping you guys understand and be patient, and PLEASE, if anyone can help me figure out how to fix this I will be grateful.

Until then, time to get used to making fics on my phone... this will suck ngl

(i'm learning it on the demon bird app, aka duolingo). what words have you learned? what do you know about the grammar/word structure? and the scary one: have you started learning the terror that is katakana? (if no, it's just another alphabet with the same order and sounds, except different characters. i hate katakana :,>) because i can't type in japanese on my chromebook, i'll just use the romanji. But expect me to send you random hiragana and have you say what it is!

The main character is pretty relatable. Theres another character who has family issues and may be trans (or genderfluid? it isnt confirmed but she was born male, currently dresses feminine and hates it when people uses her dead name). Another one who was born a 'Genius' but doesnt really understand art, hes only doing it bcs its basically wat he can only do. Another character who'm gets compared to her older sister and so on. I remember trying to get Linux running on a Chromebook a few years back. It took me several hours of research to learn that a specific screw locked it from being able to load other operating systems, not to mention the work others had done on the software end to find ways around the other structures in place blocking Linux from being able to be installed on Chromebooks. I eventually got it to work, but it would have been impossible without some serious troubleshooting, research, and the shoulders of giants.

And that's the issue here. In an effort by capitalism to make everything sanitized and convenient, we don't know how to get into the weeds. It's pretty clear who benefits from this arrangement. If you're able, learn what you can (and teach who will listen) about tech literacy. Knowledge is power

We need to lay more blame for "Kids don't know how computers work" at the feet of the people responsible: Google.

Google set out about a decade ago to push their (relatively unpopular) chromebooks by supplying them below-cost to schools for students, explicitly marketing them as being easy to restrict to certain activities, and in the offing, kids have now grown up in walled gardens, on glorified tablets that are designed to monetize and restrict every movement to maximize profit for one of the biggest companies in the world.

Tech literacy didn't mysteriously vanish, it was fucking murdered for profit.
