prompts
“are you going to cry now?”
“you’re scaring me”
“you’re nothing. you hear me? nothing”
Tumblr media
"Y/N!" You heard the distant calling of your name amongst the chatter of the mass of students in the Great Hall. Cocking your head slightly forward from your seat at the Gryffindor table, you found the source of the noise as they barrelled into the entrance with a frantic look in their eyes.
"Neville, what's wrong?" You question him, as he flops onto Seamus Finnigan, seated adjacent from you. Seamus furrows his eyebrows at his friend's breathless state, then looking at you with the same confused expression on your face.
Neville audibly heaves for a good minute, catching his breath from the seemingly long run he underwent.
"Harry, he—" His sentence is interrupted by a lengthy inhale of oxygen.
You perk up at your brother's name. A plethora of questions surfacing in your mind. "Harry? What happened? What did he do now?" You stand up, placing both hands on the table as you peer over at the short-winded boy now laying flat on the floor, his chest rising and falling rapidly.
“He ... he—”
"He what?" You persist.
"Courtyard. He's— A-And Malfoy. "
That's all you needed to snatch your bag off the floor and bolt for the courtyard.
You realised you had developed some sort of attraction to the infamous Slytherin Prince around the start of 5th year. Although, you had assumed it was just a phase. In what world could you ever be attracted to the one guy that makes you and your brother's lives a living hell?
So that's what you had concluded it was. Just a phase. One that had seemingly fizzled out once you started dating Ron and now call a silly mishap.
But that wasn't true at all, was it?
A series of scenarios flickered through your head as you begun to wonder just exactly what had happened for poor Neville to nearly faint from shortness of breath to fetch you.
It must've been urgent.
As you reach the Courtyard, a crowd has formed around the oak tree, most likely watching the interaction between the two boys. Your hand finds the wand tucked in the pocket of your robes, gripping it tightly as you push through the cluster of people to get to the front.
He sees you before you see him.
"Ahhh, how nice of you to join us. Now the other Potter's here, we can really have some fun" Malfoy announces. Sniggers erupt from the group of Slytherins behind him as you finally reach the centre of the circle.
Your eyebrows knit together in perplexity. Malfoy is stood in the middle, surrounded by his goons but there's no sight of Harry.
"Where is he?" You snap at Malfoy, hostility lacing your words as you look around the gathered students agitated.
"Y/N, I'm here!" Harry's voice calls from above. At first your skeptic but as you look up, there he was. Floating in mid-air. Along with Hermione and Ron.
"You bloody git. I'll get you back for this Malfoy. I swear—" Ron is cut off by the single wave of Blaise Zabini's wand, effectively silencing him.
"They look rather comfy up there, Potter. Don't you think? Care to join them?" Malfoy pulls his signature smirk, eyeing you up and down.
The hold on your wand tightens as you whip it out and point it at him, stepping forward. "Oh, I wouldn't if I were you. Unless you want a repeat of fourth year? Don't think we all forgot about you running stark naked around the corridors after your little ferret incident."
The crowd bursts into laughter at your witty comeback. Even Theodore Nott couldn't contain his laughter and eventually gave in when he saw the humiliated look gracing Malfoy's face.
Malfoy's gaze on you hardens, his upper lip curling in contempt as he too takes a step forward. If looks could kill, this would be it. He flicks his wand upwards, still maintaining eye contact and you hear the thud of 3 bodies on your left, followed by grunts from the hard contact as he relinquished the golden trio from his spell.
"Yeah? No wonder Weasel left you for the Mudblood. I would too considering what a bitch you are." He hisses with no remorse.
Gasps emit from the crowd at his harsh riposte.
As much as you'd hate to admit it, the comment hit a nerve. You remained civil with Hermione and Ron after having found out he cheated on you with her but the pain was still there. A guilty expression flickered over the couple's faces as they shot you an apologetic look.
"Awww, are you going to cry now?"
Your wand lowers slightly from the impact of Malfoy's insult and he takes this as an opportunity to cast a leg-locking curse.
However, he underestimated you. You managed to block the spell with a simple protection charm before quickly shouting "Expelliarmus!" Malfoy's wand jumped into your open hand in a fleet of a moment and he was left defenceless.
"I may be a bitch but at least I'm not a disappointment. It's obvious that your Father would rather have anyone— hell, he'd even have Harry rather than you as a son" you scoff, narrowing your eyes at him.
You felt a surge of satisfaction when an emotion that resembled hurt flashed across his face. But it went as soon as it came.
Something in Draco snapped. It was one thing to ridicule him in front of his peers but to bring up his Father? Now that was a whole different ball game. Before he could even stop himself, a barrage of insults came pouring out.
"Are you even hearing yourself? At least I have a Father. And I have a Mother. You? You have no one. Your parents are fucking dead, Potter. You don't even have any recollection of them—"
"MALFOY—"
"Shut the fuck up, Potter" He snaps at Harry then instantly directs his attention to you again. "And as for your sorry brother, I don't even see you two together anymore. He'd rather be around the two people that betrayed you—"
"Draco, mate, I think that's enoug—" Theo tugs on Malfoy's sleeve to get him to stop but he's persistent on speaking his mind.
"Piss off, Nott. A-Around the two people that betrayed you than— than a pathetic excuse for a witch. No one likes nor cares about you. You're nothing, Potter. You hear me? Nothing."
Malfoy appeared deranged in the way he lashed out at you, chest heaving from his rant and wild eyes that looked as if he could kill you right at that moment.
But you didn't care.
You were past the point of caring. You knew all the things he said to you were true, you sometimes even thought it. But it felt like a whole new revelation when he stated it aloud. In front of everyone. Soon the whole school would be talking about this.
But you didn't care.
It was then, Draco knew. He knew he messed up. He took in the wide eyes and gaping mouths of his peers around him. Harry's enraged expression. His friends' guilty body language; despite the fact they played no part in the insult.
Then his eyes swept over to you. He had knocked the life right out of you. You looked ... numb. With your faintly quivering lip and glassy eyes, he realised he had overstepped. Usually, you'd retaliate and he would too until you were both separated by your friends or the professors.
Though, this was different. This was overdoing it.
"R-Right." You managed to say flatly but the distress was clear in your words. The tears in your eyes were threatening to spill and you felt sick. Sick to the stomach about the fact everyone had heard and were most likely going to realise that about you too if they hadn't already.
You had to leave. Bolt out of there before you became a weeping mess.
You turned on your heel and made a beeline for the closest abandoned corridor you knew by heart. You couldn't go to your dorm because Harry would find you there and you wanted to be alone for the time being.
You ignored your brother's calls to come back aswell as Hermione's and a few other fellow Gryffindors you had befriended over the years.
Tear after tear came rolling down your flushed cheeks. Each one representing a time you had bottled up those feelings and refused to give into the 'let it all go' mechanism.
The past 2-3 years had been a blur of pain and heartbreak. Ron and Hermione's betrayal had hit you worse than you thought, combined with Harry's absence and the pitiful treatment your friends had been giving you.
"Potter, wait!"
You whirled round so fast at the all so familiar voice. Out of all people, you hadn't expected him to be the one to follow you.
"Leave me alone, Malfoy. Please— Just .... just please leave me alone" Your plead came out in splutters, unable to fully form a sentence with the state your mind was in.
You swivel back round and begin to continue further down the hallway but you don't get far as Malfoy calls after you again.
"Potter, stop."
"WHAT? WHAT IS IT? YOU WANT TO HUMILIATE ME EVEN MORE? IS THAT IT? WHAT DO YOU FUCKING WANT, MALFOY?" You turn, snapping at him.
Through the swelling anger and haze of your tears, you couldn't make out his expression as he stared intently at your face.
"I— I just wanted to—" Malfoy pauses for a second, struggling to find the right words. After a moment, he simply sighs, eyes travelling to your hand. "My wand. You have my wand." He points at your clenched fists that have both his and your wand in it's tight grip.
At that, you feel immensely stupid for lashing out at him. Huffing, you shove it in his hands and collapse against the vacant corridor's wall out of frustration.
You bury your head in your hands and replay the scene that had just occurred. It was humiliating. Utterly humiliating ... but it was the truth.
"Potter."
You started slightly at the sound of Malfoy's voice. You had expected him to go running back to his goons to ridicule your breakdown yet here he was.
"Wh-What are y-you still doing here?" You managed to reply in between hiccups as you kept your eyes wired shut to cease the ever flowing stream of tears. "Would h-have thought you'd ran off and celebrated this v-victory of yours with the other Slytherins."
"Potter, I—"
"No, you know what, I don't even care anymore." You get to your feet and push yourself off the wall. This would only satisfy Malfoy even further; watching every piece of the facade you managed to maintain, crack and fracture. He didn't deserve to see you like this.
As you swivel round, about to make a run to your dorm, you're pulled back by a harsh grip on your wrist. Cold rings digging into your skin as he spins you back round.
"Well, I do." Malfoy says in almost a whisper.
You shoot him a bemused look at his vague and random words.
He takes in your confused expression and further elaborates. "...Care. I mean." He says, flatly whilst looking around you as if he were avoiding your eyes.
You can't help the scoff that passes through your mouth as you yank your wrist free of his grasp. "You? Care? Yeah, right."
You go to turn again but he stops you once more. "Look, Potter—"
"Malfoy—"
"If you would just—"
"No—"
"Listen to me—"
"Why would—"
In a fleet of a moment, Malfoy shoves you against the wall. His large hand wrapped around the back of your head to mitigate the impact. And the other squeezing your hip to hold you in place.
"FOR FUCK'S SAKE, STOP INTERRUPTING ME. IS IT SO HARD TO SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND FUCKING LISTEN TO WHAT I HAVE TO SAY?"
You open your mouth to protest but you're quickly cut off by his hand leaving your head as it drives into the stone wall right next to your face.
"STOP IT. DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT LISTEN MEANS, POTTER?"
You jump at the abrupt act of violence combined with the volume and harshness of his words.
"LISTEN."
His fist rams into the wall again.
"TO."
And again.
"ME."
And again.
Your eyes screw shut as you let out a small whimper from the proximity of his punches between the wall and your face. Tears escaping and falling rapidly from the fear he had elicited out of you combined with the occurrence that had put you in this mess in the first place.
Malfoy is pulled out of his momentary ballistic rage at the sound of your small and helpless sounding whimper. He had yet again let his temper get the better of him. Culpability overcame him as he took in your cowering state and he instantly regretted spinning out of control.
"Potter." His voice, eyes and grip had softened drastically, completely contrasting his aura just seconds ago.
"Y-You're scaring me." You murmur.
Malfoy instantaneously takes a step back, releasing you from his hold.
Your eyes fly open and immediately register the immense shame etched on his face.
"I'm sorry. I didn't—" He pauses momentarily, sighing to himself before continuing. "I didn't mean to scare you. Or hurt you. I didn't mean the things I said earlier."
It was an understatement to say you were taken aback by Malfoy apologising. You didn't think he even knew how to.
"You're sorry?" You reply, dubiously.
"Yes. I am."
You squint your eyes at him in suspicion, "No, you're not. Why would you be sorry? You don't even care—"
"Fuck's sake, not again." He cuts you off, shaking his head as he pinches the bridge of his nose out of irritation.
You don't understand. What's his angle? Surely, he doesn't really care. Right?
"What? You don't. Or else you wouldn't have—" You attempt to explain your point of view but he interrupts you once more.
"FUCKING HELL, POTTER. I AM SORRY, OKAY? IS IT SO HARD FOR YOU TO BELIEVE THAT I'M APOLOGISING FOR HURTING YOUR FEELINGS?"
A moment of silence passes between the two of you as you stare at each other.
"Yes." You breathe. "I-I just don't understand why you would—"
Before you could even process what was happening, Malfoy has you pinned to the wall anew but this time with his lips pressed against yours.
You undergo a mixture of all sorts of emotions in the time span of a second. Shock, confusion, disbelief and most of all a tiny spark of exuberance.
He gives you little time to melt into the kiss before he's pulling away already and holding your face in his hands.
You've never been this close to Malfoy before, so needless to say you wouldn't have believed anyone if they said Malfoy actually had the most entrancing eyes. Like a storm brewing behind grey clouds, you thought.
"Does that answer your question?" He asks, a smirk creeping up his face.
You can't help the little smile tugging at the corner of your lips as you attempt to mirror his smirk. "Partly, yes."
Without a second thought, you smash your lips against his, hands travelling to his hair as you lightly tug on the ends.
He slightly moans at this and mumbles in between kisses, "You don't know how long I've been wanting to do this."
"WHAT THE FUCK?!"
You both suddenly pull away from each other as you meet Harry's eyes from the end of the hallway.
Shit.

@xoxogamergirlxoxo “Hi! Do you still do request for Beck? Because I can’t stop thinking about y/n passing out during class and boyfriend Beck freaking out. Cat raced into the classroom, doubling over to catch her breath after running from one end of school to the other. Beck looked at his friend in confusion, trying not to break character but it was hard when your bubbly red-headed friend bursts into the classroom out of nowhere.
“Beck!” she suddenly exclaimed, racing to the stage and taking hold of Beck’s arm. “You gotta come with me, it’s important!”
“Cat, I’m kinda in the middle of something here,” Beck said, motioning to the scene he was performing for Sikowitz. “This is my final, I need to finish it - ”
“It’s (Y/N). She passed out during class, she’s in the nurses office right now.”
Beck didn’t even look to Sikowitz for permission, he immediately dashed out the door, following closely on Cat’s tail.
When he entered the nurses office, he could see (Y/N) laid down with an ice pack over her head. Her eyes were still closed and her skin was so pale she was nearly translucent. Beck tried to go back to her, but was stopped by the school nurse.
“Can I please see (Y/N)?” he asked her. “Or at least know she’s okay?”
“She’s okay, she just needs to rest,” the nurse told him. “I think her fainting spell has to do with over stress and malnutrition.”
Beck looked at the nurse in confusion. “Stress? Malnutrition? That makes no sense.”
Cat suddenly gasped beside Beck and covered her mouth. Beck turned to look at her. “What do you know, Cat?”
“She made me promise I wouldn’t tell anyone!” Cat responded. Both Beck and the nurse gave her a look. “But this is a serious topic so I’ll tell you: she took 10 classes this year.”
Beck’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “What?! How is that possible? How does she have the time with lunch in the middle?” Cat looked down at her feet. “Cat, is she eating lunch?”
“She told me she eats between classes!” Cat said. “I’m sorry, Beck, I promised.”
Beck sighed and ran his hand through his hair. He turned back to the nurse. “Can I stay with her?”
“Of course,” the nurse responded. “But she needs to rest, let her sleep for a while.”
Beck nodded. He pulled up a chair next to (Y/N)’s bed and took her hand in his. (Y/N) stirred a moment, but didn’t wake.
Beck sat with her for about an hour. In that time, Tori stopped by the nurse’s office to give Beck food for himself and for (Y/N) for when she woke up. She didn’t stay for long, but Beck could see the brief flash of sympathy in her eyes before she left.
He was starting to nod off himself when he heard the sound of the paper on the cot rustling, indicating that (Y/N) was moving. Beck sat up as (Y/N)’s hands moved to her face to sleepily rub her eyes.
“God, my head hurts,” was the first thing she said when she became fully conscious again.
Beck couldn’t help but chuckle at this. “Well, you did faint and hit your head.”
(Y/N) looked at him in shock. “I fainted?”
“You don’t remember?”
“The last thing I remember is being in class with Cat...how long have I been out?”
“About an hour.”
(Y/N) cringed at this. Beck took her hand in his again, bringing her attention back to him. “(Y/N), why didn’t you tell me about all the classes you were taking?”
Her eyes widened in shock then. “Cat told you? I told her - ”
“Why would you keep that a secret?” Beck cut her off. “Babe, the nurse said you’re malnutritional, that’s why you passed out. Don’t you know that’s dangerous?”
Tears started filling (Y/N)’s eyes. She quickly buried her head in her hands, trying desperately to wipe the tears before they fell down her face. Beck got up from his chair and moved to sit next to her on the bed. “Don’t cry, baby.”
“I’m so sorry, Beck,” she said through sobs. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I just...I didn’t want to worry you.”
“And you thought passing out during class was the best way to do that?”
(Y/N) managed to give Beck a playful glare through her tears. “Obviously not. I thought I had everything taken care of. I was on top of my school work, I was eating fine between classes. Some classes even let out early during your lunch period and I was able to actually eat with you and the gang.”
The times (Y/N) had shown up near the end of lunch and said she got stuck with a project or in detention or any number of excuses flashed through Beck’s mind. He had always believed her, now he felt silly for doing so.
“Why are you taking so many classes?” he asked her. “That has to give you such little time to do anything else in the day.”
“It does,” she admitted. “But...I have to. The school I transferred from apparently ‘lost’ my transcript, so I’m missing a whole bunch of credits in order to pass.”
“What? How is that possible?”
(Y/N) shrugged. “I don’t know! Principal Helen called me in before school let out for the summer and told me that there was no record of all my former credits because my old school failed to send them over. She called them in front of me and told me they lost the records, so there’s nothing official saying I did all those classes. Helen told me that, because it’s so many credits, there’s no way I’d be graduating with you guys, unless I tried to make up for them all and also took the classes I needed this year. Guess which option I took.”
Beck cupped (Y/N)’s face in his. “Baby, you don’t have to work yourself to death. You could do summer school, and then you’d still be walking with us at graduation in September.”
(Y/N) shook her head. “I have to work over the summer, I can’t afford college if I don’t.”
“You can’t afford to stop eating and stress yourself to death either.”
(Y/N) felt the tears pricking her eyes yet again and quickly wiped them away. “I don’t want to be held back, Beck. I wanna graduate with you guys.”
“And you will! Just let us help you, let me help you. You don’t have to do this alone, baby.”
(Y/N) smiled and slowly sat up. Beck helped her, making sure she was stable enough and wouldn’t fall over or pass out again. When she was sure she was alright, (Y/N) cupped Beck’s face and pulled him for a sweet kiss. He smiled and kissed her back, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close.
“I love you so much,” he told her, pulling her in to rest her head on his chest. “Please, tell me about these things in the future. I was so scared today.”
“I’m sorry, Beck,” she mumbled into his chest. “I promise I’ll talk to you in the future. I’ll take better care of myself, baby.”
“That’s all I ask. I want to have you for the rest of my life.”

The last thing you expected was a phone call at the crisp time of 11:43 pm. It had been a long day already with your job being a disaster and you were half tempted to just let it ring so you could stay in the warm, safe cocoon of your bed...but something in your gut nagged at you to pick up, told that it was important. The bleary sight of Frankie’s name on your phone screen had you sitting up and rushing to hit the green ‘accept call’ button - he would never call this late unless it was serious.
He sounded wrecked, his voice panic-stricken and cracking over words too rushed for you to understand, and your heart began pounding. In all of your years of knowing Francisco Morales, you had never heard him like this. Not when he called you while he was out on deployment, not when he whispered to you about the horrors he had seen overseas, not when you comforted him after the shitshow that happened in South America.
“Frankie, slow down. I can’t understand you,” You tried to make your voice calm and reassuring but your worry bubbled through anyway, and you threw back the warm comfort of your blankets to scramble for clothes. Whatever this was, you needed to be there. There was no way in hell you would just listen to your best friend go through it over the phone. “What’s going on?”
A deep, shuddering breath crackled through the receiver, then “Eliza left us. She just...she just fucking left.”
Your breath caught in your throat and acidic anger ripped up through your chest, nearly suffocating you in it’s intensity. The mere idea of her walking out on Frankie and their new baby after all she had already put him through...god, you could just scream. It was forced down with a harsh swallow - it was not the time for your own anger. With your sweatpants and hoodie yanked on, you paused, struggling to find any words of comfort. “I’m on my way, okay? I’ll be there soon.”
“Ok” Frankie whispered and that was how you knew just how bad it was - he didn’t try to convince you not to come out so late or that you could just come in the morning like he did any other time he was in crisis. “Please don’t hang up.”
“Frankie…” You whispered. Your heart ached for him, wrestling with your anger. “I won’t. I’ll stay on the line, I promise.”
You rambled about any and everything as you drove. He needed to hear your voice, needed to be distracted, but you felt a bit ridiculous talking about the boring things you dealt with at work that day while he was in crisis. It helped, obvious by the way his breathing evened out as he listened and hummed in response.
There was no telling just how many traffic laws you broke as you sped the few blocks between your home and his. All you could do was be glad you weren't pulled over and managed to throw your car in park and kill the engine in the gravel driveway within ten minutes of leaving your own house. The front door swung open before you even managed to get out of your car and you practically sprinted up the steps to wrap your best friend in your arms.
Frankie stumbled back slightly as you collided with his chest but he curled his arms around your waist and buried his face in your neck nonetheless. No words passed through the nonexistent space between you. There wasn’t any need. You pushed the door closed behind you before you led him further into his living room and settled next to him on the couch. The sight of his bloodshot eyes and the exhausted slope to his shoulders had a wild mix of anger and sadness whirling through you.
“Where’s Isabella?” You whispered.
“She’s asleep upstairs. Eliza dropped her off and she just...slept right through it all, the entire argument.” His voice was hoarse, a testament to his rough night. “I...I can’t do this on my own.”
“Hey, you aren’t on your own.” You said, your tone soft but leaving no room for argument. “I’m not going to tell you it’s going to be easy, but you sure as hell aren’t alone. You have me and the boys. God knows Santi will be happy to flex his status as godfather even more.”
That pulled a half-hearted smile from Frankie. It was fleeting, gone in less than a second, but you counted it as a win nonetheless. Watching that far away look return to his eyes made you chest ache and you were desperate to break the spell of worry and anger that hung over him. Somehow knowing that you couldn’t even if you tried brought you no closer to peace.
“Have you eaten?” You asked as you carefully brushed a hand through his hair, appreciating the curls that were usually hidden under his hat. Frankie leaned into the touch and you smiled softly at his acceptance of the comfort you offered.
“No, but I can’t eat right now.” Frankie grumbled. The intensity of the anger, the shock, the fear, it all gave way to a mind-numbing exhaustion and he just wanted to sleep. You sighed but didn’t push him. “M’tired.”
“Alright, c’mon. Let’s get you to bed.” You heaved yourself from the couch and offered Frankie a hand to pull him along with you. He grumbled quietly to himself as you ushered him up the stairs, the both of you mindful of the sleeping baby. Frankie flipped the baby monitor on and took a moment to observe the grainy image of his little girl, fast asleep and entirely unaware that their lives had just changed drastically.
“She deserves better than a broken family.” Frankie whispered, the image of defeat as he sat heavily on the edge of his bed. There was nothing for you to say in that moment, nothing that would ease his burden or change his mind. So instead of speaking, you just sat next to him and wrapped an arm around his shoulders, pulled him into your side and rubbed his back in slow strokes. Just when you thought he might be calm enough to lay down and get some sleep, Frankie went stiff against you and groaned. “Fuck, I have work tomorrow!”
He was up and pacing a hole in the floor before you could even blink, grumbling out a quiet rant about the insanity of his situation. It seemed like he was a step away from spiraling out completely - and you knew just how to prevent that. Francisco Morales was a military man through and through; give him clear instructions and he’ll tackle a task with all he’s got. All he needed was for someone to help him see past the panic to the next step.
“Frankie, stop.” You stepped in his way and put both of your hands on his shoulders firmly, only continuing when he finally looked you in your eyes. “Call the office now and leave a message for them to cancel your tours for the next couple of days so you can get your head on straight. It’s a family emergency. They’ll understand. And after you call them, you need to lay down and at least rest your body, because Isabella will need to be fed in a few hours and you need to get some sleep while you can. I’m staying the night -”
“Wait, what? No, you don’t have to -” Frankie interrupted but was met with your finger at his lips, almost cracking up when he pouted against it.
“I don’t have to, you’re right. But my best friend needs my help and the little girl that I adore deserves to have a dad who isn’t ripping his hair out from stress. If the tables were turned and I was the one in this position, would you let me convince you to leave?” You took your hand away from his face when you shook his head ‘no’ and you gave him a small smile. “Exactly. So, I’m staying the night and I’ll be here to help wherever you need for as long as you need me. Okay?”
Frankie nodded. After that, it was easy to get him burrowed under his covers. His eyes drooped the second he was settled, and with a final brush of his hair off of his forehead, you turned to head back downstairs and set up a makeshift bed on the couch. A hand shot out from under the blankets to latch onto your wrist and Frankie sounded almost child-like when he whispered, “Please stay.”
And who were you to deny such a sweet plea? You curled up on the opposite side of the bed, exhaustion finally dragging you under after the day’s insanity. Two hours later when a shrill cry had you both sitting bolt upright, you threw back the covers and slid out of the warmth of Frankie’s bed right along with him.
“You go make her a bottle and I’ll check her diaper, alright? You asked around a yawn, already shuffling off to the nursery. Frankie made a tired noise of agreement and went downstairs, leaving you to scoop up his crying infant from her crib. “Hi, Bella. Let’s get you changed, yeah? Does that sound good?”
Once she had a clean diaper, you carefully carried her down the stairs and into the kitchen where her father was warming up a bottle. He smiled at the both of you as you approached and reached out to rub his daughter’s back where she lay against you, chest-to-chest. You could see the doubts worming their way back to the forefront of his mind by the way his smile faltered, and you put Isabella into his capable hands.
“We’ve got this, Frankie. One day at a time.” You murmured to him before leaning down to coo at Isabella, grinning when she gave you a gummy smile. “Yeah, your daddy has you. Everything’s gonna be just fine.”
And as you looked at the matching pairs of chocolate eyes sparkling at you in the low light of the kitchen, you could feel in your gut that you were right.
----------------------------
After three weeks of staying at Frankie’s house nearly every night, the two of you had a schedule down packed and after two entire months, Frankie realized you were right. It sure as hell wasn’t easy - far from it, in fact - but everyone had stepped up just like you said. You would care for Isabella when Frankie was at work more often than not with Will and Pope picking up responsibility here and there where they could. The true savior here was you. You woke with Frankie in the morning, held his daughter up so he could kiss her forehead before he left for work, cared for her until he came home, and still stuck around to help after.
You were a fucking goddess, and Frankie knew he would be lost without you.
Each day that passed had Frankie’s anger dissipating just a bit more. With his focus solely on establishing a new normal for his daughter, there wasn’t really time for him to think about just how screwed over he got. He was fooling himself into thinking that the storm of emotions that thundered in his chest didn’t need to be handled. Logically, he knew that. The clouds would crack and it would all pour from him eventually, he just didn’t know when.
The boiling point hit on a Saturday. A beautiful day by all other standards; the sun was bright in the cloudless sky, leaving the air shimmering with warmth. The plan was to take a walk to the park with Isabella before meeting the guys for lunch, even though she wasn’t really big enough to enjoy the jungle gyms. In reality, Frankie just wanted to spend some time with his two favorite girls out in the sun. You had Isabella on the couch, getting her dressed after changing her diaper and rambling at her all the while.
Frankie loved the way you talked to his daughter, as if she was entirely invested in whatever mundane story from work you were recounting, taking her gurgles and the spit bubbles she blew as excited responses. The stack of mail in his hand momentarily forgotten, he leaned over the back of the couch with a small laugh.
“Ya know, I don’t think she understands the intricacies of office politics.” He teased, his grin growing when you tossed him a glare that had no heat behind it.
“And I don’t think she understands the intricacies of piloting helicopters, but you don’t hear me making fun of you when you ramble on about rotors at three in the morning.” You grumbled. The smile on your face betrayed any attempt to sound annoyed.
Frankie barked out a laugh. “Touche.”
With Isabella dressed and ready to rumble, Frankie intended to give the mail in his hands a once-over before heading out the door - until a large, yellow envelope with the state’s stamp inked in the corner caught his eye. What the hell did he do to have the state government contacting him? He racked his mind as he tore the envelope open, trying to think of any recent wrongdoings that could’ve gotten him into some legal mess. Maybe that red light last month actually caught his license plate last month. God, this was the last thing he needed right now with everything else he had going on, and -
The five words stamped across the top of the papers made his heart lurch in his chest. ‘Voluntary Relinquishment of Parental Rights’, right there in bold lettering. Eliza’s signature was scrawled at the bottom along with a notary’s. He expected sadness, even tears, but no.
No, Frankie was fucking enraged.
White hot anger surged, leaving his teeth gritted and the papers crumpled slightly in his clenched fist. It had been years since he felt that kind of rage, somehow even worse than the anger he felt during the absolute shitshow that was the mission in South America. A shuddered breath escaped from behind his teeth as he desperately tried to grasp the urge to throw the papers to the ground, along with anything else within his reach.
“Frankie?” The sound of your voice calling out to him sweetly, laced with concern and confusion, somehow only made that rage spike. The fact that you had put your entire life on hold to help him care for his child, the child Eliza swore up and down that she wanted with him before disappearing on them both, had him infuriated on your behalf as well as his own. Just how many lives was Eliza going to change forever with no remorse? Frankie tossed the entire pile of mail on the couch and stormed off to the kitchen, not wanting you or Isabella to see him in such a state.
He had no idea how long he stood braced against the kitchen counter with his eyes squeezed shut, desperately trying to find a way to tamp down on the intensity rolling  through him. There was a quiet conversation coming from the living room, two voices too low for him to make out, and there was suddenly a hand on his own. Frankie finally opened his eyes to see you standing next to him, giving him a soft look that disarmed him and made him feel guilty all at once.
You shouldn’t have to be here. You shouldn’t have to deal with the bullshit that always seemed to follow Frankie around every fucking corner. You were too good for his troubles, you deserved better. Frankie hated that he had brought you down this hole with him.
“Where’s Isabella?” Frankie croaked out.
“I called Will, he’s got her in the living room.” You said, your voice just as soft as the expression on your face, and Frankie wanted nothing more than to bury his face in your neck and cry or smash something on the ground just for the satisfaction of seeing it break. The confliction of his wants only made him angrier. “I saw the papers. What do you need?”
“What do I need?” Frankie repeated with a humorless chuckle before hitting the countertop with a clenched fist, just hard enough to make pain shoot up his arm - and the dam broke. “Anything! Anything but a life where the mother of my child doesn’t abandon us at the drop of a fucking hat!”
The coffee mug that sat next to the coffeemaker was the unfortunate victim his impulses chose to meet the sudden, desperate need to get this rage out of his body. His arm reared back, ready to smash the ceramic mug right onto the tile, but the firm grab of two hands kept the lucky cup in one piece. You grabbed his forearm with one hand and wrapped the other over his, securing the mug in his grip as you stepped into his space and settled him with a firm look.
“No, not here. Not like this, not with Isabella so close by.” Shame lanced through Frankie viciously. You were right, as always. How fucking stupid was he to think - “Let’s go.”
“What?” was all he could mutter as you set down the mug and began pulling him towards the front door.
“You’ve got Isabella, right?” You asked Will when you paused to fish your keys from the table next to his door, only continuing in your march towards your car when Will confirmed. Frankie’s guilt-ridden confusion only grew as you pulled out of his driveway after ushering him into your passenger seat. “You need to deal with this in a healthy way. Because god knows you have every reason to be downright enraged. Hell, I even wanted to throw shit around for a while.”
Frankie could only stare at you, his anger and frustration simmering lower the more you spoke. There was a light in your eyes that he recognized, the same one that you had last year when he had to comfort you through the downfall and heartache of your last relationship. It was anger and sadness all wrapped up into an intense shine he recognized all too well.
“But we are going to do these the smart way.” You continued and met his eyes as you pulled up to idle at a red light. There was… something there beneath the empathy, something hovering at the edges of your expression that he just couldn’t place. “Because you are my best friend and I love you and your daughter way too much to let you destroy yourself.”
Heat flushed up his neck at the candidness of your words. Oh, god, he could not let that tiny, hopeful part of his brain latch onto that at run with it. No, it would reignite too many old feelings and needs to let himself hope. Of course you loved him and his child - you were his best friend after all. There was no point in letting himself even consider it beyond that. Not when he could destroy everything good he had left in his life.
Frankie just nodded, trusting in whatever you had in mind. Less than five minutes later, you pulled into the town’s recreational fields and it clicked in his brain. The batting cages. He smiled slightly despite his inner turmoil. This was exactly where he had taken you when you finally got over the shock of your ex-boyfriend’s betrayal and stepped right into an unfathomable rage.
He let you put the ridiculous helmet on his head and gratefully took the aluminum baseball bat from your hands once you got to the small fenced area where he could finally let out his anger. The quarters clinked as you slid them into the slot and you smiled at him from behind the fence.
“You might feel stupid at first, but it helps.” You called out over the whirring of the pitching machine powering up and Frankie laughed. He had told you the exact same thing, verbatim when you had complained that the whole idea was ridiculous.
The harsh crack of the bat meeting that first baseball was like taking a sledgehammer to the wall he had built around his anger. The next one had him grunting into the effort he put behind the swing of the bat, letting every bit of his rage and resentment sing in his veins and bleed into the impact against the ball. Each swing had him building up, had tension racking his back and shoulders only to be released with the ringing sound of aluminum and revived the moment his arms fell to his sides.
“I just...I can’t fucking comprehend it! First, she was so excited. Went on and on about having the whole thing. ” He called out through each swing, knowing you were there behind him, hanging off of the fence to watch and listen. “The house and the kids and the - the fucking white picket fence life. All of it! And then she wanted all of that, but not with me. No, she’d co-parent and find some other man to shack up with because apparently I wasn’t enough for her. Yeah, it hurt and all but at least she was still around! And out of nowhere, she just fucking left! It’s bullshit!”
The aluminum echoed harshly where Frankie threw it to the ground, his hands ripping his hat off to muse his hair roughly before settling back on his head. Every ball hit was like a point knocked off of his frustration. It wasn’t exactly fun, but it felt good.
“Another round?” You asked and Frankie turned to see you with more quarters poised and ready to send more baseballs flying at his head. He nodded, more grateful for you than ever in that moment.
“But at the same time, I am so glad she left when she did. It’s so conflicting because I’m pissed that she put us through that but at least it’s over!” Frankie continued, the pressure finally easing in his chest as he said the things that were building in his mind the last two months. “She jerked me around for so fucking long. At least I don’t have to worry that she’ll change her mind again. At least I can… move on, move forward in my life.”
He didn’t even have to ask you for another round when the last ball had been pitched. This time, he said nothing. Neither did you. Frankie just needed to vent, to be heard. He didn’t need advice or pity or words of encouragement. Well, the encouragement he would need later. The rest would just make him even more angry. Every crack of the bat meeting a ball had the anger receding and exhaustion creeping up to take its place. There was a special kind of relief in the absence of anger - it didn’t exactly feel good, but it wasn’t bad either. Almost numbing.
The bat clattered to the ground after the last ball was sent rocketing into the netting. Frankie was done, for now at least. It would come creeping back in, he knew, but he also knew he could handle it. He felt like he could handle anything with you by his side, with your support and… and your love. It was nice to be taken care of for once. You took the bat back to the office as he plopped himself down at a picnic table and a few moments later, a cool water bottle, dripping with condensation was pressed against the back of his neck. It was soothing against his skin, overheated by the harsh sun.
The two of you sat together at that table for nearly an hour, not having to speak to convey how either of you felt in that moment. Frankie was beyond grateful, and he could tell you were happy he was feeling better just by the way you rubbed a hand between his shoulder blades. He almost lamented at the loss of your touch when you pulled that hand away, only to have you settle it on his just like you did back in the kitchen.
You were always there, always managed to make him feel better. Even when his life was crumbling around him, there was solace to be found in you. In your words, your touch. You never made him feel ashamed when he exposed his sadness or his anger, never made him feel less than. It was impossible for that small flame not to flicker back to life deep in his heart. The spark of hope for the future, especially if you were in it.
“Thank you.” Frankie choked out, unable to express himself any more than that. It didn’t matter, he knew that. You knew how much this little foray into stress relief helped him.
“Always, Frankie.”
Later that night when all was quiet in his home, when the Miller brothers and Pope had left and Isabella was safely asleep in her crib, Frankie was still exhausted. The boys had come over instead of dragging him out to a restaurant and it was a blast, as always, but he couldn’t help the heavy way his shoulders were set for the rest of the day. He just wanted to sleep.
The last thing he expected was the tears. An overwhelming feeling of being entirely unwanted washed over him and he was too damn tired to fight it off, so he sat himself on the edge of the bed and cried. No matter how logical he was with himself, no matter how much he reminded himself that he was well loved despite Eliza, the feeling just would not shake.
Embarrassment layered on top of the sadness when you popped your head into his bedroom, hair still wet from the shower you just took. Frankie wiped the tears away with rough fingers as he turned away from you, giving an entirely fake laugh in a vain attempt to brush it off. He should’ve known better. You padded right up to him and gently cupped his cheek to guide him to look back up at you, and the understanding smile you gave him paired to the gentle brush of your thumb under his eye to wipe a stray tear away had his chin trembling against his will.
“C’mon,” You whispered. Frankie watched you clamber onto his bed through tear-blurred eyes and settle against his pillows, your arms open in an invitation for comfort that he took without a second thought. Frankie laid his head on your chest, wrapped one arm around your waist, and closed his eyes before he could talk himself out of it. This was dangerous ground, letting himself take comfort in you this way. You brushed your hand through his hair, sighing softly as you relaxed. “We’ve got this. You know that, right?”
“Yeah.” Frankie’s voice was slurred slightly with his sleepiness, the craziness of the day finally pulling him under. “Yeah, we do.”
---------------------
At eight months old, Isabella was growing into a vibrant, happy little girl and you couldn’t be more proud. You hadn’t expected to play such a large role in her life, but now you couldn’t imagine doing anything else. According to her pediatrician, little Bella was as healthy as a horse and blossoming. ‘A textbook case of healthy development’ was what she had said at the last checkup, leaving you and Frankie to grin at each other. The first appointment after Eliza left was nerve racking with Frankie bouncing anxiously the entire time until Dr.Weston gave them the exact same response - Frankie’s daughter was right on track.
The relief on his face had broken your heart. How could that man ever think he wasn’t doing right by his little girl? You saw him with her every single day. You saw the way he babbled along with her while spooning baby food into her mouth. You watched him lie on his belly with her in the living room during tummy-time, trying to help her strengthen her neck. You woke up to him stripping the blankets off of the bed when she couldn’t fall asleep anywhere but his arms and wanted her in bed with you both. If there was anyone who could attest that Francisco Morales was an amazing father, it was you.
And you made sure to tell him that, as often as you could. It made the most delicious flush creep up his neck and paired with that bashful smile he tried to hide by pulling the brim of his hat further down, you could barely keep yourself from kissing him. Guilt ate you alive every single time you had those urges. Frankie was thriving after such an awful ordeal, and there you were, lusting after him like some over-excitable teenager.
It was impossible not to feel so... domestic in your current set up. You slept at Frankie’s so often that your own home felt almost foreign when you would show up for more clothes or to grab something for work. You worked from his kitchen table or couch, tapping away at your laptop as Isabella slept or played on her playmat in front of you. The instinct to refer to Frankie’s house as ‘home’ and the way you saw the three of you as a little family was new and something you had to nip in the bud right away.
That type of thinking would inevitably end in heartbreak when Frankie sent you on your way once he didn’t need as much help with Isabella. At least you knew it wouldn’t be anytime soon and could enjoy it while it lasted, especially since the home was currently plagued with a two word nightmare neither of you expected.
Sleep. Regression.
You sat in the glider with Isabella slumped against your chest, her cute little face pressed against your sternum as you rocked sleepily. Her eyelids fluttered every now and then, but there was yet to be a moment you could settle her into her bed. Frankie had tried before you, but even daddy’s arms weren’t good enough for the fussy baby. He was rooting around downstairs, searching for a little stuffed hippo that sometimes helped her calm down, but at that point, you were willing to just sleep right there in her nursery.
The door cracked open slowly and you peeked one eye open to see Frankie shake his head slightly as he walked in. You held back a sigh. That damned stuffed hippo was going to be the death of all three of you, apparently. Frankie made an urgent noise and your eyes flew open, your eyebrows pinching together in confusion. With a baby constantly on the verge of either falling asleep or waking up, the two of you learned to communicate without words, instead using pointed looks and hand gestures to get a point across.
Frankie gave a pointed look Isabella and you tilted your head down to get a good look at her, and good god you could barely believe your luck. A very long, drawn out transfer from your chest to her crib later, and you and Frankie were creeping out of the nursery, careful to avoid the creaky sections of the hallway. The second the door was closed, you held up a hand for a quiet high five with the goofiest grin on your face, and Frankie obliged with a chuckle.
You practically threw yourself onto the bed you were starting to consider your own, yet another dangerous road, you knew that much. The stubbornness both you and Frankie held strong to had neither of you willing to let the other take the couch, insisting that ‘no, you need good sleep.’ and ‘well, you do, too!’. Each night you spent curled up next to him and waking up a hairsbreadth from each other had you positively yearning.
It was nearly three in the morning and both of you had work in a few hours. The idea filled you with dread, and that was how you found yourself whispering to Frankie that you were calling out because ‘exhaustion is the best reason to use a sick day’. He cracked up at your antics as he crawled in next to you, but the look he gave you once he was settled in… it made your heart flutter in your chest. It was an exhausted, relieved, and grateful expression all rolled into one and in that moment, you felt like you could look at him forever.
You didn’t get the chance to. Frankie slid his arm under your shoulders and pulled you against him. It was too familiar of an embrace for you to shy away, even though you knew you should. You should’ve stayed on your side of the bed with plenty of space between you if you wanted to avoid heartbreak, but instead, you snuggled close to him and set your head right on his chest. You could let yourself indulge in the fantasy that he was yours for just a bit longer, especially if it meant getting this unforgettable experience of curling up with the man you adored.
The steady rhythm of his heartbeat lulled you closer to the abyss of sleep, until his chest rumbled as he spoke, making you blink up at him.
“Thank you, cariño.” Frankie settled his hand against your head, playing gently with your hair.
“Always, Frankie.” You whispered back, a smile on your face even as you slipped into the most peaceful rest you had in years.
-----------------------
The house was full of people. For the first time in months, Frankie threw a cookout. It was something you had missed dearly, inviting everyone over for food and beers and a bonfire if the mood was right. Isabella was beyond happy to see everyone she loved all at once, the nine month old squealing with delight at each person who scooped her up from her bouncer. You watched carefully, always ready to swoop in if needed while Frankie ran in and out of the house between the kitchen, grill, and living room.
You had been worried it might be too much for him, the pressure of so much socializing after such a hard time, but he was all grins and twinkling eyes as he ran about. It warmed your heart to see that happiness radiating off of him. God, had you missed it. Things were finally looking up and it felt as if you had let go of a breath that was held in for far too long.
Almost everyone was out in the backyard, soaking up the last of summer before fall got her chilly grip on the world, with you and a few others inside chatting. Isabella had just woken up and boy was she ready to go. Those chubby little legs flailed as you wrestled her into a clean diaper and back into her pretty pink dress. You leaned back with a small laugh once she was finally dressed, letting her have the free reign to roll over onto her belly.
You glanced up at Will where he sat on the couch a few feet away taking a break from all the chitchat, and he grinned at you, muttering something about her being just like her father. You couldn’t agree more. You went to pick her up and carry her outside where she could get some sun and squeal at more guests, but your hand met the carpet instead. Isabella grinned at you less than a foot away, propped up on all fours as she scrambled away so quickly you worried she would get rug burn before you realized - holy shit, she’s crawling.
“Go get Frankie!” You said to Will, who was staring at Isabella with a proud grin. He jumped to his feet, ever the good soldier taking commands, and you scooped the giggling little girl into your arms. “Look at you go! Oh, I’m so proud of you, sweet girl!”
A frazzled Frankie skidded around the corner out of nowhere, half of the crowd piling in behind him in worry, and internally you cursed Will for not informing him that nothing was wrong. Before Frankie could even ask, you motioned for him to sit down a few feet from you and he listened despite the deeply confused look he wore.
“Are you gonna show daddy your new trick, Bella? Huh? Go on,” You cooed as you set her back down on her hands and knees, and she took off like a bat outta hell, scrambling for her father, who watched with wide eyes. Frankie broke off into a loud laugh and picked her up to cradle her against his chest, his eyes bright with unshed, happy tears as the crowd of friends and family let out whoops and claps.
“Oh my god!” Frankie laughed wetly, shuffling forward on his knees to pull you in for a hug with his little girl in between you. Your cheeks hurt with the huge smile you wore as you wrapped your arms around him. The way he looked at you tore through your chest with the most pleasurable kind of pain and the urge to kiss him would have been undeniable if not for the friends that surrounded you. So you cleared your throat and leaned back, pushing his bicep gently.
“You better get back to that grill before everyone in here starves to death.” You tease and leave it at that, gathering Isabella in your arms to take her outside. What you didn’t see was Pope grabbing Frankie and dragging him up the stairs before he could make it outside along with you. You flounced about the backyard, the hem of your sundress fluttering at your knees as you let everyone get a chance to coo at the happy girl in your arms.
Everyone was so happy, all smiles and laughs as they caught up with each other about the various going-ons of their lives, and you wanted to capture it so you could look back on the happy memories.
“Hey, I left my phone upstairs. Do you mind if I leave her with you? I should be right back.” You asked Pope’s girlfriend, Jessa, who eagerly accepted the baby time.
You climbed the stairs easily, humming some silly tune as you pushed open Frankie’s door. With your phone fully charged, you popped it off of the charger and sat on the edge of the bed to check your notifications. There were few messages here and there, mostly from people letting you know they were on their way a few hours ago, so you were content to make your way back outside with the sound of voices caught your attention. It was a low, metallic sounding conversation, but the TV was off, leaving only…
On the screen of the baby monitor were Frankie and Pope, both of them standing with their arms crossed tightly over their chests. If you didn’t know better you would have been worried they were about to fight with the way they glared at each other, but whatever it was wasn’t any of your business. You were going to leave but the sound of your name made you pause. Eavesdropping is wrong, you reminded yourself, even if you were painfully curious, and you made for the door once more until you heard Pope said, “You have to tell her, Fish!” and you froze entirely.
“That woman loves you! She loves your little girl. You’re going to lose out on a good thing if you keep going like this, man!” Pope hissed and for a second, all you could hear was your own heartbeat. He couldn’t mean what you hoped he meant… right?
“I can’t! Isabella is already down one parent, and that… that amazing woman stepped in and saved us both. What kind of a father would I be if I risked my daughter losing a good woman? And for what? Because I'm in love? Absolutely not.” Frankie said in a tone you had never heard from him before. It was harsh, ringing with finality, and it absolutely tore your heart in two.
But the halves of your heart were made whole by the single sentence, ‘Because I’m in love’. Frankie loved you. He said it. You heard it with your own two ears and suddenly those fears of yours felt absolutely ridiculous. That man and his daughter was your family, no two ways about it. And you couldn’t let him go on thinking that you didn’t love your little family more than anything in the world.
So you snuck back downstairs, your heart flying in your chest as you rejoined the little party and tried to act as normally as possible. In reality, you were paying more attention to the back door than anyone who tried to talk to you, giving little ‘mhmm’s instead of answering the questions anyone asked you.
Yeah, you could be entirely oblivious sometimes.
The second Pope and Frankie emerged from the back door you were on the move, excusing yourself from the conversation you hadn’t really been a part of anyway. The confused look Frankie gave you when you asked to talk to him inside was being adorable, his eyebrows scrunched together and head tilted to the side just slightly. He followed you in nonetheless, leaning against the kitchen counter as he popped open a sweating beer. Before he can even ask what’s going on, you step into his space and put your hands on his chest gently, watching as his confusion melts into surprise.
“You are never going to lose me.” You whisper. “Neither of you.”
A blush bloomed up his neck and over his cheeks. “You...you heard that?”
“Didn’t mean to, scouts honor.” You smiled at him, trying to imbue him with the ease and absolute happiness you felt. “The baby monitor was on.”
“Oh.”
You can’t help but chuckle at the simple response and press up on your tiptoes, your hands sliding up to drape over his shoulders so you could play with the curls at the nape of his neck. The breathy sound that escaped Frankie’s chest had your need mounting, desperate to feel his lips on yours, and you lean forward to brush your nose along his. “Say it, Frankie.”
“I love you.” He said it immediately, whispered it into you with a grin so bright it lit up the room with his happiness. “I love you so much.”
“I love you, too.” You barely get it out before he leans forward to kiss you, soft and desperate and happy, all at once. Frankie’s hands fell to your hips and pulled your body flush against his, and it made you to grin against his lips.
You were giddy. That was the only way to describe the excitement that left you almost vibrating with energy as you melted against Frankie’s chest. His lips were sweet, touched by the strawberries and grapes he snacked on as he grilled.
“You love me, huh?” He muttered and pressed his forehead to yours, eyes closed with a goofy smile that made your heart lurch in your chest.
“Always, Frankie.”

My Life is One Complication After Another 3
Cursing Ahead 🤬
Ao3 *** First *** Previous *** Next
~~~~~~~~~~
Ever since Mari's classmates stopped talking with her, they also stopped asking her for favors. Along with a blocked and rotating schedule for patrols meant that she actually had a sleep schedule. Sure she didn't get nearly enough but that was what coffee is for.
That was how she found herself down in the bakery with her papa. Roy had called her and the four of them talked and it was comfortable. Mari was the one who opened and was watching the front. She was still talking with Roy, but now it was on a headset, as he was out patrolling In Starling City.
"So as I was saying before we were oh so rudely interrupted." came Roy's voice in her ear. "So Ice cream and movies?"
A soft laughter escaped her and a smile on her lips.
"Sounds gre..." the bell at the door chimed. "Hey guys come in," she greeted the Waynes.
"Let me guess the bats?" Roy supplied as Dick bounced towards the counter.
"Good morning Marinette!" Dick practically sang loud enough for even Roy to hear.
"God how the hell is he so chipper so early." she heard Roy grumble.
"God damn morning people," she grumbled. That elicited laughter from both Roy and Jason.
"Amen to that!" Tim seconded in a monotone lifting a coffee cup. "Maman I'm going to take the Waynes up." she called poking her head into the kitchen. Her Maman nodded so she picked up her phone and walked towards them.
"I'll Let you go," Roy was about to hang up.
"Wait how about we give the Bats a heart attack." she smirked changing to the ancient language of miracles.
"I like the way you think, I'll catch you later." he responded in the same tongue.
"See ya then." she smiled, switching back the language. Ending the call and removing the ear piece. “Are you guys coming or do I have to drag you guys?" she turned back already at the door. Granted most of them showed confused faces and side eyes, but she smiled. They followed her without saying a word.
Once they were in the apartment she excused herself to change into more appropriate gear. She activated Kaalki’s miraculous, who then silently portaled out.
That being said she changed into a pair of black skinny cargo pants with red combat boots. A black long sleeve shirt under a cropped red sleeveless hoodie. Her hair was half down with red and pink streaks and a mini white gold backpack with three patches in the same white gold finished her outfit. She grabbed four parcels and went down.
"So we can either do the boring ground tour or," she held up the bundles. "we can turn up the speed."
"I like the way you think Pixie Pop." Jason stood and she handed him his.
"Roy sent me you guy's sizes, so I altered and customized a few things." she smiled. "bathroom is over there and the guest room is next to it." Dick looked torn between excited and horrified when handed his stack.
Tim seemed awake, but she knew better, "go change and I'll have a fresh pot of coffee ready." He nodded robotically as he got up.
She set the last bunch next to Damian, who was looking like an angry kitten. She sat down next to him and leaned in.
"What are you.." he started but Mari whispered in his ear.
"The jacket has a hidden sling for a katana, which will be practically invisible when on." His eyes widened slightly and there was a bit of slack in his jaw now. Before turning into an amused smirk. "Use my room up the stairs and through the hatch." she finished as he headed up the stairs.
"I'm impressed he let you close without struggling," Bruce broke his silence, as she finished prepping the coffee maker.
"Well he would have if," she began as Damian practically crashed down the stairs and all but tackled Bruce before rushing out the door. The closest she had ever seen her baby brother smile, which effectively made her smile.
"Holy crap! What are you?!" Dick made himself known.
"More importantly what the fuck did you do with Demon spawn!" Jason shouted from next to Tim, who was being propped up by both Jason and Dick.
"Tt. I am right here Todd." The scowl reappearing on his features. "It is adequate Dupain-Cheng."
"I'll take it as a compliment on one condition."
"And that is?" he rose a brow.
"You call me Marinette not Dupain-Cheng. I'm your sister aren't I?"
He seemed to war with himself for a moment before stating. "That is acceptable, Marinette."
At this point all the bats in the room were playing a game of ping-pong between Marinette and Damian. They were trying to figure out what magic spell Marinette must have used, when in reality she just seemed to fall into Damian’s good graces automatically. OK so maybe Marinette being the holder of the ladybug miraculous as well as being the great guardian of the order has that affect on most people, a sense of respect and trust that seems to permeate her aura.
She was handing Tim a huge mug as the front door swung open to reveal her Maman.
"Hello Bruce," Sabine greeted.
"It is good to see you Sabine," was his response.
“Maman," Mari pulled her mother's attention from her biological father. "These are Bruce's boys and my brothers. Tim, Jason, Dick, and Damian." she motioned to each one respectively.
"It's nice to meet all of you." Sabine smiled, "why don't all of you get something from the bakery before you go."
After finishing their small breakfast in the park Mari pulled out a map and a marker.
"So what do you guys want to see?" They listed off places that she marked down. She added a few to the list to fill it out, marked the route and took a picture and sent it to Roy. "Okay so this will work." she glanced at her phone. A quick look on social media showed no one has found Andre yet. She pulled out a case of comms and added, "Also keep your eyes out for Andre."
"Who is that?" Dick asked taking the earpiece.
"Andre's Ice cream cart, the best ice cream in Paris." Marinette answered.
"Then why must we look for him?" Damian added.
"Well he changes locations daily and turns it into a game of tag of sorts."
"Alright, lead the way Pixie." with a smirk she dashed off her brothers close on her heels.
Yes this is the best way to get to see the city, but this was also a test to see how the bats did without their toys.
Getting to Notre Dame was uneventful. Dick kept up a steady conversation with her, just a step behind with Damian, Jason brought up the rear but would constantly toss in quips and questions. Damian and Tim were mostly quiet, unless they were trying to get one of their brothers to stop a particularly embarrassing story.
Getting to the Louve was even more entertaining. Now that Dick had a feel for the Parisian roofs he would do flips and vaults to make her laugh. In the Louve is another story.
They had accidentally ran into some of her classmates, quite literally. She and her brothers were taking goofy 'walk like an Egyptian' group photos on the second floor of the Egyptian exhibit, the mini Ladybug camera was reattaching to her phone charm when Tim began asking her questions about it.
"Well my best friend loves anime, and we kinda sorta binged the entire Dragon Ball series and when we saw the ladybug camera. He said it would be impossible to create and maintain the quality of the image. So I kinda sorta made it out of spite." she mumbled the end.
"Hell if you weren't my sister I would beg Bruce to adopt you," Tim stated. "Do you have the files I would love to look through them. Maybe send them to Babs or Cy!"
"Sure I think I have it on a flash drive." That was when a tall body, walking backwards slammed into her, pushing her into Jason. "oof."
"You okay." Dick was in full mama hen mode fretting over her.
"I wasn't watching where I was going." the figure spoke as he turned around. "I'm sor." the words died on his tongue, Kim.
Max, Alix, Nino, Alya, and oh kwami no Lila, who were now all snickering.
"I'm fine Dick," she smiled to reassure him. However her classmates were shocked.
Lila of course was the one who broke the silence, by beginning to cry. "I'm so sorry about her. I know she hates me but to be so rude to a complete stranger!" her sobs breaking the sentence while her lackeys went to console her, glaring daggers at Marinette.
"Seriously girl," Alya began to scold her. "Your little out burst not only made Lila cry. Your insulting someone who is just trying to be nice."
She and her brothers were now standing awkwardly being scolded by a teenager. After three minutes of trying to figure out what they were being scolded for and why the guys hadn't apparently left.
"What the fuck did she do that your yelling at her for?" Jason finally broke Alya's rant. Now it was the five Parisians and the Italian to stand there confused.
"She called him a dick," Alya sighed exasperated.
"Yes." Dick answered confusing them further.
"Dick."Tim now called.
"What?!"
"Dick!!" Damian, Marinette, Tim, and Jason all called, and immediately began laughing.
"What? Oh, oh," a sheepish smile now on his face. “Names Richard but I go by Dick,” he explained to those who weren’t laughing, smiling at them.
"Tt. this is why I call you Grayson." Damian rolled his eyes. "Besides this one still has not apologized." he jabbed a finger to Kim.
"It's not worth it Damian,” Marinette shook her head. "We should head back to the bakery anyways. Maman has probably finished scolding Bruce." she smirked.
"Damn I wish I was a fly on the wall for that conversation" Jason lamented.
"Well..." she held up the ladybug charm and flipped it over showing an empty space.
"Two!" Tim shouted.
"Anyone who beats me back gets a copy," she smiled.
"Your on." Jason nodded as he vaulted over the safety wall from the second floor. Damian and Dick sprinted in opposite directions.
"Sorry Mars your gonna loose." Tim shouted as the last to leave.
"We'll see," she shot back. "Bye," She turned to her classmates as she grabbed the railing above and flipped up and over to the third floor, running to one of the secret zip lines the miraculous team set up.
"What the fuck" was faintly heard behind her, all but Lila and Max shouted by the sounds of it, as she jumped from the window.
She made up quite a bit of distance and seemed to be on Damian's heel. She had passed Tim and Dick was a few steps behind. Jason was just out of arm reach. So with a burst of speed both she and Damian were shoulder to shoulder with Jason.
The three of them simultaneously practically crashed into the side door of the bakery.
"I won."
"In your dreams Todd."
"I beat both you and Pixie"
"Check your eyes, or do you need the camera installed in your helmet." Jason's gaze hardened at Damian's words.
"How about we call it a three way tie and you both get a copy." Mari interrupted. "We should head up." Laughing Marinette opened the door and went up.
Lunch was rambunctious, but she was coming to expect that with her brothers.
“Too bad we couldn’t find that ice cream guy Mari,” Tim spoke up once everyone had finished eating.
“Oh let’s see if anyone has posted where he’s at today!” She went to check her phone but a message ended up distracting her.
Andres in your favorite spot I’ll meet you there at 7 your time.
"Cool he’ s in my favorite spot in all of Paris which just happens to be the last spot on our list today," she announced, sending off a text, setting her phone down, screen up.
Can't wait Katniss
"Why don’t you all go and Mari can get to know Bruce," Sabine offered.
OK granted it’s a good idea, maybe I should get to know my biological father but am I ready to? Do I want to? Am I yes, yes I want to get to know my biological father, yes I want my family to grow, my brothers are such protective goofballs and I love them already.
"Sounds good," she smiled.
That was when her phone lit up from a message. She went to pick it up, but she was to slow.
Jason was the one who snacked her phone. "Message from Katniss says see ya then Peeta. So who's Katniss Pixie."
"Well..." she started but she began to blush furiously.
"That would be her boyfriend," her Maman decided to add before heading back down to the bakery with Papa.
Dick pounced asking a million and one questions, Bruce physically froze but she could tell his mind was racing because that look was much the same as hers. Jason was pensive, while Tim and Damian just seemed bored or tired.
So that was how she found herself talking about Roy, blushing furiously. While simultaneously avoiding his name and details that would tip any of them off. After about a half hour of her answering questions did Dick start telling her about his fiancée. How they were planning on setting a date for the wedding.
After that the next few hows was spent sharing stories and tidbits of themselves.
However, thanks to Dick a design was swimming in her mind. so she did the only logical thing and ran up to her room. Grabbed three drives, her tablet and pen and ran back down. She tossed the red drive to Tim, and Jason and Damian each a black drive. Plopped down and began stretching out an Italian suit with a nock lapel. A rough coloration of a midnight blue offset by a sapphire. Accents of golden thread, emerald buttons and an Osiria rose in the lapel. She signed the design 'Mira Luck' and handed Dick the tablet.
"So I couldn't help myself," she begun to fidget. "But in my defense you told a designer about a wedding and my brain wouldn't stop screaming at me until this was on something. So what do you think? I know its rough but."
"Holy Shit your Mira Luck as in M, Jagged Stones personal designer. You are M as in the designer for the Lucky Spot!!" Tim screamed lunging to take the tablet from Dick.
"That's me," a blindingly bright smile lit up her features.
"So what do you think?" she asked again.
"It's amazing we were actually hoping to talk to you about Kori’s dress." Dick smiled. "I could call her it's not too late there."
"Perhaps it would be best to discuss it in person when Marinette next goes, that way she can get to know Gotham." Bruce interjected.
"That actually might be sooner than you think," she responded.
"I was actually accepted to be an exchange student for the next semester at Gotham Academy."
"Wait you’re willing we going to Gotham to study! You ’re going to Gotham willingly. Bruce I think your daughter might be a little crazy." Jason surprisingly brought up.
"I might be but but it’s no crazier than Paris and it’s a Akumas. Besides I would love to design your fiancée’s dress and we should head over to Andre’s ice cream before the sunsets that way we can watch the lighting of the Eiffel tower." She got up and called out. "Hey Jason mind passing me my backpack."
"Yeah sure," he went around he couch to grab it and toss it to her but before he did he finally seemed to notice the patches. "Wait are these The Outlaws."
"Yeah Red Hood, Arsenal, Star Fire, and Bizarro." she was smiling.
"Why choose The Outlaws?" Tim brought up.
"Honestly it was because Roy mentioned something about Arsenal and Red Hood and I ended up liking of the logos, so I made them into the backpack," she shrugged. "Besides unless you’re looking at it close enough you can’t tell which is always fun to see if people pay attention to it, let’s go."
At that the six of them walked out of the apartment, away from the bakery towards the Palais de Chaillot.
"So what's so special about Andre's Ice cream?" B asked.
"Personally I think he is a meta. But what he does is he can either see your true reflection or that of the person best suited to you."
"So he sees souls?" Tim added.
"Not quite, more like he sees the main qualities of you or your go." she tapped her chin.
"But he is meta,” Tim tried to figure.
"That's the only explanation I can come up with but I have no idea." Marinette shrugged.
"So how does he do it." Tim was now fully invested in this.
"Well you either ask for love or self and he usually does three to four ice cream flavors and gives a short reason."
They were now at the top of the stairs at the Palais de Chaillot looking out at the Eiffel Tower. They stood there as the last of the light faded from the sky. The city was dark for a moment as the Eiffel Tower lit up and slowly the lamps lit up.
"So that's why this is your favorite spot Minnie." A voice behind her chuckled. She turned around and nearly tackled him.
"Hey speedy." she pecked his cheek.
Not a second later did Jason scream, "Roy!"
"Ready for that movie?” Roy asked her an arm around her shoulders.
"Of course," she smiled. "See you guys around."
"What the fuck are you doing in Paris Roy!?" Jason screamed.
"Um... Date night," he answered. The Waynes were now practically surrounding the couple.
"What?" Apparently it was Dick's turn to yell.
"Seriously. I thought you said the bats and birds were detectives." she spoke just loud enough for them to hear. "It's kinda hard to believe with the big bat having a heart attack over there." Sure enough Bruce was seriously hyperventilating.
"Oh mind giving this to LB?" He handed her a small nondescript red box.
"Sure," Marinette took the box, "Au Revoir."
From there they left and oh kwamii did she wish she could replay that again, oh wait I can.
Invention and Intrigue
This might turn into a multi-part fic? I haven’t decided yet, but let me know if you want to read more of this one though!
He doesn’t look angry, or even particularly concerned is the thing. He looks like he’s considering something. Thoughtful, interested. “That was quite the performance,” He says at last and walks over to you, his shoes tap tap tapping against the stone floor. “I think I’d like an explanation.”
The dungeons are one of those places that you don’t go near unless you can absolutely help it. You’d dropped Potions the moment you’d been allowed, not because you’re not good at them - it had been one of your best subjects in actuality - but because the dungeons aren’t safe. Not for someone like you.
This is why you’re currently cursing every bloodline that makes up your best friend’s family tree as you gingerly descend the stone steps into the depths below. Melanie Lindhurst has a date. A date with a boy who she has been pining after since fourth year. She also has a very expensive rare textbook that she needs to return to Slughorn that night but she can’t because of said date. This is why you’ve been roped into finding Slughorn and returning the book yourself. Which means you have to go into the bowls of the castle and pray you don’t run into any Slytherins whilst you’re there.
Melanie had said you were being dramatic when you’d grouched about it over dinner. She finds your reticence to go near the dungeons very amusing. But then she’s not the one who spent most of fifth year creeping around the castle waiting for a mystery monster or madman to sneak up behind you. She’s not the one who had Victor Lestrange whispering that he wished it had been you when they removed Myrtle’s body from the bathroom. So Melanie doesn’t get to laugh at your objectively sensible reluctance to step foot in the snake pit.
After ten minutes of wandering the corridors, you have to admit that you’re lost. All the tunnels look exactly the same and you don’t know where Slughorn’s office is. Maybe Melanie had a point when she said you have a flair for the dramatic, but honestly, never mind Slytherins, you’re going to die down here because of your terrible sense of direction. You take another turn and hear voices coming from behind a door. Lestrange’s unmistakable cackle carries through the air and the door slams open. You press yourself against the wall and hope that no one spots you. Tom Riddle leads Avery and Lestrange out of the door.
God. The snake pit indeed.
You’re in the middle of breathing a sigh of relief at not being noticed when Riddle stills and turns to you. “Are you lost?” He asks, and the other two boys turn to stare at you too. You school your expression into something polite and unassuming and valiantly try to ignore the nasty smile that’s stretching across Lestrange’s face. Riddle, for his part, looks faintly amused. Like he knows exactly how little you want to be here and finds it all rather funny. Still, you feel yourself stand a little straighter despite yourself. He’s the Head Boy, after all, well known in the castle for his pleasant, quiet demeanour and his strict adherence to the rules. It’s not strange that you want to make a good impression.
“Good evening. I, ahh, I have to return this book to Slughorn. My friend borrowed it and he wanted it back tonight.” You explain, feeling vaguely ridiculous as you raise the book up to show them that you aren’t lying. “I don’t suppose you know where he is?”
Avery rolls his eyes, reaches towards you and takes the book. “I’ll bring it to him. I need to talk to him about my last potions essay, anyway.” He says. You notice that he very carefully doesn’t touch you and you bristle at the implication that the thought of touching a muggleborn is beneath him.
“Of course. I’m sure you’re more familiar with this area of the castle than I am.” He leaves soon after. You decide to switch Melanie’s conditioner with hair dye as vengeance for her leaving you. In the snake pit. With Lestrange. The two remaining Slytherins watch you - Lestrange with haughty contempt and Riddle with a kind of detached interest. You rather get the impression that he’s waiting for you to do something idiotic. “I… Well, good night.” You say at last deciding that making a speedy escape is your best plan of action.
You've made it to the end of the tunnel when you hear Riddle say goodbye to Lestrange and his footsteps recede into the distance. You frown and your grip on your wand tightens when you don’t hear Lestrange follow after him. “You're being paranoid,” You mutter to yourself and begin to try and retrace your steps. Five minutes later, you realise that you’re even more lost than you’d been to start with. With a rueful smile, you have to admit it’s hardly surprising. You haven’t stepped foot in the dungeons in two years, and even then it was only ever to the Potions lab. Your knowledge of this part of the castle is severely lacking.
It’s as you’re mulling over your predicament when a flash of purple light illuminates the space around you and a cry escapes you as your shoulder erupts in blistering pain. Lestrange’s laughter echoes down the hallway and before you can think it through, you’re lashing out with your own curse. “Confringo!” A stone bust next to where Lestrange is standing explodes and he yells in surprise as a chunk of marble very nearly knocks him over. He raises his wand but you’re quicker: “Crudesiko.”
The effect of the spell is immediate. Lestrange staggers back, his eyes wide and fearful. You smirk. Serves him fucking right. His already pale complexion is turning practically ghostly and when he opens his mouth, blood burbles up the back of his throat and spills down his chin. You’re fairly sure that if you left him much longer, he’d die. Which would be bad. Very bad. You don’t want to go to prison for murder. With a flick of your wand the curse lifts and Lestrange stops coughing up blood. You stalk over to him, anger and adrenaline making you reckless, “If you ever try to touch me again, I swear I will do so much worse. Do you understand, Lestrange?” You hiss, your wand digging into the hollow of his throat. He nods, still pale, still shaken, still scared. “Don’t tell anyone about this - stupid little muggleborn like me? Compared to your fucking pedigree? No one would believe you.”
Over his shoulder, something shifts in the shadows. You take a step back from Lestrange and let out a shaky breath. He gathers himself, schools his expression into one of disdain and quickly retreats back to the safety of the Slytherin common room. Now that you’re alone, the weight of what you’ve done hits you. You’d hurt him… Hell, you could’ve killed him. You sink slowly to the floor and stare blankly in front of you, unable, or perhaps unwilling, to think about the gravity of your actions. Adrenaline bleeds out of you and you have to choke back a sob. Regardless of what you’d said to Lestrange, you know that if he so much as breathes a word of what transpired you’d be facing expulsion. Probably worse.
“Scourgify,” A smooth, calm voice interrupts your panicking and you snap your head around to stare up at Tom Riddle who is currently cleaning up the trail of blood Lestrange left in his escape. He tucks his wand away and turns to meet your gaze, one brow arched. He doesn’t look angry, or even particularly concerned is the thing. He looks like he’s considering something. Thoughtful, interested. “That was quite the performance,” He says at last and walks over to you, his shoes tap tap tapping against the stone floor. “I think I’d like an explanation.”
You don’t get up from the floor. Resignation sits uncomfortably on your shoulders, the weight of your disappearing future hanging heavily over your head. Head Boy Tom Riddle is your judge, jury, and executioner. “Do you really need one? You saw what I did.” You mutter, unable to look at him as something like shame curls up your spine.
He sighs and then, as though he’s explaining something very simple to a small child, he says, “I didn’t say I needed an explanation. I said I wanted one.” You chance a glance at him then and find yourself fixed under the weight of his scrutiny. When you still don’t say anything, he sighs again and this time you can detect a hint of impatience. “Or perhaps you’d prefer to explain this to the Head Master?”
“No!” You yelp, unable to stop the hint of hysteria from creeping into your voice. He hums approvingly and you’re not sure why, but you start to believe that maybe you’re not going to get into trouble. “I just… Lestrange started it.” You gesture to your shoulder which is still aching, the fabric of your shirt is slashed open where the curse hit you revealing a nasty burn across your shoulder and collarbone. “I’m not helpless. I’m not going to just… not defend myself because he thinks he’s better than me.”
There’s a tense moment where neither of you speaks. Riddle’s gaze is impossibly intense, his eyes flicker from the burn to your face to your wand and you can’t look away. From your position, he towers over you and you think you should be afraid but somehow you can’t will the emotion into existence. After what feels like an age, Riddle takes his wand and murmurs something under his breath. A pleasant coolness wraps around around your shoulder and the pain recedes and the burn mark melts, leaving smooth clear skin in its place.
He offers you a hand. You’re a little surprised by how delicate his hands look. Pristine pale skin stretched over piano players fingers. He’s wearing a gold and onyx ring on his ring finger. It looks antique; strangely it suits him. As though he was born to wear that ring. You take his hand and he pulls you up in one fluid motion, a display of strength that you’re not sure why shocks you. His skin is cool and the way he holds your hand and doesn’t let go even when you’ve found your footing sends fission of something down your spine, pooling in your stomach.
 “Allow me to walk you back to your common room,” He says and begins to lead you down the hall. He still hasn’t let go of your hand. “What spell did you use?” He questions after a few moments of silence and you can practically hear the wheels turning in his mind as he considers you as though he’s truly seeing you for the first time. “I didn’t recognise it.”
Despite yourself, pride twists in your chest. “You wouldn’t have,” You say simply. “I invented it.” At this, Riddle’s eyes widen briefly before he dispels the shock from his face and regards your guarded curiosity. At his prompting, you explain what the spell does. “It’s designed to drain the blood from the victim. Ideally, they wouldn’t start coughing up blood, but I’ve never used it before so I guess there’s room for improvement.”
To your surprise, he laughs. It’s not the polite hum of mild amusement you sometimes hear him make in front of professors, it’s surprisingly high pitched, light, melodic. “This is your main concern? That it didn’t work exactly as intended? Not the fact that you almost killed the heir to one of the most respected pureblood families in Britain?” He must sense the sudden flood of panic and worry that washes over you because he glances sideways at you, a small, oddly reassuring smile curling his lips. “Lestrange won’t breathe a word unless I tell him to. And I think this might be a secret best kept between us, don’t you?” He smiles down at you and you could maybe believe that he’s just being immeasurably kind if it weren’t for the dangerous glint in his eyes and the way his hand tightens around yours. It’s a warning, maybe. It feels like a promise.
Riddle walks you the rest of the way to your common in silence and you’re painfully aware of how close he stands when he finally comes to a halt. You can feel the heat radiating from him, the weight of his hand around yours, the light puff of an exhalation against your cheek as he leans down and murmurs in your ear, “I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other from now on.” He raises your hand between the two of you and grazes your knuckles with his thumb. It’s an oddly tender gesture. “Good night.”
You stand there, alone in the corridor, for several minutes after he leaves, wondering just what in the hell you’ve gotten yourself into.
in bocca al lupo
What?  Original whumpfic?  From me?  Yes, I know it’s been ages, but I’ve gotten new inspiration!  I’ll be posting snippets here, but most of it will be going up on my AO3, under a new pseud.
Masterlist.
~#~#~#~#~#~
Jaime shivered on his knees and tried to remember how to breathe.
Wolves prowled around them, bared teeth and sharp claws, low huffs whenever one of them flinched back. Only five of them were left, five of the nearly thirty hunters at the camp, the last remnants of this moonlit massacre.  Jaime stayed where he was, numb and cold, hands folded in his lap, and focused on breathing.
The hunters were dead. All of them were dead.  Including the five of them grouped together at the front of the camp as the wolves ransacked the rest of it, making sure they didn’t miss a single thing.  Determined to destroy every last vestige of the camp.
Jaime couldn’t blame them. He just wished they’d ripped out his throat when they found him half-collapsed in Eskender’s tent, instead of dragging him out to group him with the other survivors.
There had been a half-second, between his magic returning and deciding to break open the cages and stumbling as soon as he ripped through his own locks, that he’d dared to believe he could be free.  Throw up an invisibility spell, conceal his scent, sneak out for the woods—he could’ve ran.
Been free, truly free, for the first time in years.
Gone home.
And the opportunity vanished like a blink of an eye, and Jaime was on his knees in the dirt as wolves skulked around them, warm breaths against the edges of his sleeveless shirt as paws stepped too close, neck bare but still trapped.
“Mage,” someone hissed.  Two people over, after Dilip who had his eyes closed and his breathing slow, and Clem who was crumpled on the ground, breathing wetly.  Emelina, her eyes sharp and her face narrowed.  “Mage, your collar’s off.  You can get us out.”
Jaime gave her a look that could’ve frozen water.
Get them out?  Oh no. They deserved to die here, deserved to be torn apart by the wolf pack for what they’d done to all the wolves they captured, and Jaime wouldn’t magick a single spark in their defense.  That they even had the nerve to ask, after everything they did to him—
“Mage!” Emelina whispered, louder, and Jaime ignored her.  She snarled, but a wolf growled from in front of them, and she broke off.
“Leave it, Em,” Tulio said on her other side, low and melodious, “He was always a coward.”
Jaime closed his eyes for a moment.  It was true. He was a coward.  He knew the consequences would be pain, and he was so, so afraid of being hurt.  He wouldn’t help even if he could, and his head was almost too heavy to lift. Undoing his magic had taken a lot out of him, and his magic reserves had never gotten a chance to really recover, not in all the years he’d spent with hunters.
A dark grey wolf plodded past them and seamlessly shifted back to human.  “We’ve searched the rest of the camp,” the dark-skinned, dark-haired woman said, casting a stray glance at the five of them on the ground, “Those are the only survivors.”
The solid black wolf—the alpha, judging by the way they all defer to her—moved out of the shadows, stalking in front of them before shifting to human.  Her hair was as dark as her fur, skin light in the moonlight, and something in the shadows of her expression made her seem just as dangerous without claws and sharp teeth.
Jaime lowered his head before he could meet her gaze.  Before he wouldn’t have cared.  Now, he knew that power was a tool, and a sharp one, and his best bet was going unnoticed.
A wolf snarl, right next to his ear.  Not much hope of that.
“Hunters,” the alpha said, her voice quiet and made of razors, “You seem to enjoy running down wolves like animals, and caging them like dogs.”
“You are dogs,” Emelina spat out, and Jaime cringed despite himself.  The wolves growled louder, but they didn’t attack.  “You come here and savage us like creatures and then have the audacity to—”
The alpha stepped forward, and Emelina couldn’t suppress the flinch back.
“You have fire left,” she said, and it didn’t sound like a good thing.  “It’s always more entertaining when they fight.”
Oh gods.  Jaime recognized that tone of voice.  That was the tone of someone who was going to play with their meal.  Someone who wanted a game.
This wasn’t going to be quick.  Jaime should’ve found a knife and slit his own throat.
“I’ll rip your fucking head off, you damn mutt—”
“Would you?” the alpha asked, tone eerily level, “Or would you rather take the chance to leave?”
Emelina stilled. Jaime was startled enough to raise his head.  There was no way the wolves would let them go, not unless they were being used as bait, but this was still a chance. If Jaime could find someplace to hide, to recover his magic long enough to disappear, if he could just run—
The alpha stepped to the side, and the wolves followed her lead.  The space between the edge of camp and the forest was wide, wide open.  “You get a five minute head start,” the alpha said, the faintest smile playing on her face.
Tulio sucked in a sharp breath.  No one moved.
“It’s already started,” the alpha informed them, and Emelina was the first person to burst into motion. She surged up to her feet, and the wolves backed away, the alpha staying where she was.  Emelina half looked like she wanted to run at the closest wolf, lack of weapons be damned, but rationality reasserted itself.
“Come on,” she said harshly, yanking Tulio up and reaching for Clem, “Come on, get up!”  Between her and Tulio, they managed to get Clem upright and on his feet, hissing against the pain.  “Let’s go!”  Dilip jerked upright as well, but the bleakness on his face was obvious.  He knew they weren’t going to escape.
None of them made a single backwards glance at him.  Jaime stretched up to his feet slowly—he felt like he was walking in a costume, like everything was one layer removed from his skin, like the oppressive weight of wolf glares was a pillow smothering his head.
Five minutes.  Jaime’s magic was nearly drained dry, he ached, inside and out, and the night breeze bit painfully at his exposed arms.  He couldn’t get free in five minutes.
The wolves stayed inside the camp as he walked out, stuttering, stumbling steps over the uneven terrain.  He didn’t even have shoes.  He’d never been far from camp, no one wanted to chance that risk, and the trees stretching in the distance looked like freedom.
Looked like a lie.
Jaime stopped walking.
What was the point? No matter how fast he ran, the wolves would catch up.  This was just a game, and Jaime was so very tired of playing games.  He just wanted it to be over.
He slowly, silently folded to his knees, arms wrapped around himself, head bent, his face stretched oddly. He didn’t even have the energy to cry.
He just waited.
After a stretching eternity of silence, the wolves began to howl.
Jaime squeezed his eyes shut.
how about ranking bucciarati's team?
regret to inform you that ur gonna get a very long answer bc i have passionate feelings about them all! also trish is in this bc she is part of the team and no one will tell me otherwise and will also include some rambling bc it is me and i have so many feelings towards these characters and none of them r cohesive
under the cut just in case (post writing yes it was long)
Giorno Giovanna:
way way more complex than ppl normally give him credit for (i will not go into feelings on how a majority of the fandom treats him unless ppl want me to then i will in fact make a very long ranty post and will not be stopped)
mildly op (esp at the beginning with how hes kind of able to just use his stand really well w no problems altho i think thats true of most of the jojos that we have seen animated?)
i am emotionally attached to him and want to give him a big hug
hes just a kinda goofy kid and is maybe a bit not good with figuring out hey this is a semi dangerous situation maybe i shouldnt be taunting him (leaky eye luca for example)
has the actual best theme
i love how he works off the rest of the team so well (even w members who do not like him)
is in my top 3 jojos i love this kid sm i would adopt him if he was real
7/10
Bruno Bucciarati:
the fucking way his character develops from licky man to best dad material is my favorite thing
his outfit is so so so good i would die to wear it
in general this man is one of my fave jojos characters and i get a lot of comfort from him
hes just really neat and has a good taste in music
he did his fucking best and i will always love him for that
imo the way that his death was drawn out was genuinely one of the most heartbreaking deaths in the entire series and fucks me up each time i think of it
i feel like he really is the one to hold the team together in a way that everyone feels cared for and saved
def has a savior complex tho for sure
dilf but im ace
also manga superiority bc he either makes the stupidest faces or looks very nice (anime has a lot of weird animation in regards to his face) and also because its lingerie there instead of a tattoo that changes thickness and placement every second
10/10
Leone Abbacchio:
guilty pleasure liking man
i am obsessed with his vibes and wish to become him
i cannot physically express just how much i love him but hes one of my faves of all time (not obvious by my theme at all wdym)
i miss his manga palette but also the colored manga isnt my beloved but also black lipstick abba
hot take maybe but anime abba looks better than manga minus the lipstick debacle
hes so so tall and i will steal his height in a nice way
his past man his past it fucks me up
his death fucks me up normally but when i was rewatching recently, i saw he gave this tiny lil smile after helping the kids get their ball and i could not take it anymore
him and brunos relationship (canonically and out of canon too) is one of my favorites in the series
also fandom hot take as i guess i am doing those for everyone- but ppl either have him as cosntantly trying to murder giorno or being like good son and v out of character, and it is really weird? not sayign that ill do better when i write them but also like im convinced some ppl havent seen the show or smth
i will steal both him and bruno and marry them both <3
this man is beloved i love him to death
10/10
Pannacotta Fugo:
i cannot spell his first name to save my life
also fandom take- ppl make him constantly only angry boy all the time and it really irks me. ik araki did not give him 2 much to work w in terms of canon personality but its frustrating
the light novel purple haze feedback is so so so good and adds sm to his character and i really like it for that!
fugo is one of those that imo deserves a lot and didnt get that
genuinely the vibes between how he treats narancia is v interesting to me, like its clear he cares about nara but nara not doing great w math really frustrates him
i love their interactions and how he is genuinely a kind person at times
the manga colors r superior here, my strawberry boy <3
i just really love and appreciate him a lot and wish that ppl gave him more love
i keep getting assigned him on kin quizzes
very smart good boy
ALSO ok fugo did not do any wrong by leaving
unsure if thats a hot take but i genuinely dont blame the character one bit for leaving and again purple haze feedback really delves into that and why he did it
if ur a fugo fan go read it
his past is really upsetting esp in the anime i will cry over it
his stand is adorable and i wanna hug it
his vibes r fun and i wanna gift him strawberry dangly earrings
8/10
Narancia Ghirga:
this boy i am also adopting (i am adopting most of them sorry)
i really hate how ppl act as if hes stupid bc bad math skills do not equal stupid like did ppl not see the fight w formaggio??
the way he just fucking dove into the water after the boat and how brunos face went all soft and happy it will never not make me cry
he is constnatnly making me wanna cry if i think too much about him for 2 seconds i love him sm
how can anyone not adore him when he set an entire street on fire yk
hes just happy despite his past and it makes me sad i love nara sm
torture dance is one of my favorite memes from the show
ALSO ok the way he died so suddenly absolutely broke me bc the remaining team members r really just seeing everyone die in front of them so quickly
his goofy and laid back moments r my fave
i love just how loyal and caring he is to his friends
his stand is really cool and again the fight w formaggio was so fun to watch
8/10
Guido Mista:
probably my least favorite member of the team for a semi good reason:
the jokes towards trish are really really uncomfy and how fugo doesnt wanna be involved but he is pushing him to do something that makes him uncomfortable did not make me like him a lot
hes goofy but not goofy enough for me to be ok with the repeated jokes about that esp in the body swap episode (ik it was supposed to be funny but it just felt off)
his vibes r good but i wish we got to see his hair
the fandom interpretation is normally pretty good of him overall?
despite not loving him a lot, i really enjoying writing for him (one day might open up headcanon requests or smth but unsure)
hes someone id wanna watch movies w but his taste in movies and mine r very different
love how he and his stand get along
honestly has very very good comedic potential
i really like how he and giorno interact as the series goes on (in a platonic way i need to clarify that i love their friendship)
again him in purple haze feedback was really interesting
probably a 5/10?
Trish Una:
beloved and deserved better
her first outfit in the manga > outfit in the anime
actually in general i believe in manga trish superiority like her hair in the manga looks so cool
her stand her stand her stand i love sm
if u dont include trish in the group i am murdering u <3
HER CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!!! IS SO GOOD!!!!!!
fandom gripe is how people either pretend she does not exist or has the trish first introduction thing where shes using her defense mechanisms and acting a bit spoiled
OK but her in purple haze feedback!!! mild spoilers but how bruno was taking care of her post the ending of vento aureo makes me so happy each time i think of it
very mad that she canonically didnt really get an ending and yet again PHF my beloved actually gave her that
how spice girl starts out as a stand thats helping her thru a very stressful situation is so cool and i love it
DAD BRUNO DAD BRUNO DAD BRUNO *frothes at the mouth*
but more seriously how she leans on bruno and begins 2 trust him and nearly point blank is referring to him as a father figure always fucks me up
esp because of the resulting fight afterwards
and the very ending of the arc that ends w bruno being like bye gonna go in the clouds and look ethereal now, oh man it makes me so sad
bc giorno is the only one that knew what happened and people that were closer to bruno due to knowing him longer didnt
i wanna see how trish coped w that personally
despite being introduced not at the beginning i think her arc and character in general were as well paced as it could be!
9/10
finally done! sorry that took so long but oh man i have so many feelings towards these guys its not even funny
Billy is more and more busy with Anvil. You actually thought after he quit the Army you will be able to spend more time with him, to have him around more often. You always felt so lonely when he left to another tour but having him home now doesn’t change the way you feel. You still feel lonely. Actually you feel more lonely than before. You barely see Billy anymore. You wake up in the morning he is gone, you go to bed at night he’s still out. The only time you see him is when you wake up in the middle of the night. You’ve reached the point where you cry yourself to sleep nearly everyday because you can’t take the distance and these feelings anymore.
It’s time for a change because you don’t wanna continue living like this anymore. You asked your cousin if she would take you in for a couple of days, at least until you know what to do. So here you are packing a bag while crying your eyes out. You’re so scared that this will be the very end of your relationship. Still you are taking only the necessary stuff hoping that you won’t have to stay long. Once you’re done you take the bag and leave your shared apartment.
Billys Pov.
Billy comes home earlier than the last couple of months and he is greeted with an empty apartment.
’’Y/n? Babe where are you?’’ asks loudly but there is no answer. He searches the whole apartment for you but you’re not there. So he decides to text you.
Hey baby,
I’m at home where are you?
It’s lonely without you here.
It takes a few minutes before he gets a reply.
Guess now you know
how I’ve been feeling since
you came back from the army.
First your head was still over there
and now it is with Anvil.
I’m not really mad Billy,
more sad but hey people change
maybe it’s a sign that we
aren’t the people we used to be.
That’s okay!
Billy reads the text over and over again. He’s now thinking about the past couple of weeks even months and he realizes his mistake. He didn’t give you the attention you deserve and need. He also realizes how much he missed you and how scary the thought of loosing you is.
Come home sweetheart.
Please come home.
I beg you Y/n.
I need you as much as you need me.
I love you.
Billy puts his phone on the coffee table in front of him and hopes that you will return to him.
Your Pov.
You read  the message and hand your phone over to your cousin. She reads the message and looks at you waiting for a reaction.
’’What should I do?’’ you ask her and she gives you your phone back.
’’Go home and talk to him. I mean you just got here couple of hours ago and I don’t wanna get a rid of you but you two should talk. At some point you’ll have to so why not now.’’
’’Looks like I’ll be going home then.’’ you say and get off the couch.
You take the your stuff hug you cousin and drive home.
———————————————————————————————————————————
’’Hey’’ you say softly and drop the bag. Billy looks up to you and smiles.
’’Hey. Thank you for coming home Y/n. Come here.’’ he says and holds his hand out for you. You walk over to him and sit down next to him.
’’Tell me everything that’s been bothering you Y/n. I know I fucked up. I need to know how much my actions actually did affect you.’’
’’Everything?’’
’’Everything. Don’t hold back Y/n.’’
’’I cried myself to sleep nearly everyday. I feel like shit Billy. I feel like you forget about me, like you don’t care about me anymore. I feel more alone having you here than back then when you were with the Marines. When you were on those tours you at least called me and send me letters. You didn’t bother doing that over the past couple of weeks. The text you sent me earlier - it was the first I love you I received in a really long time. All I know is that I won’t continue living like this. I wont continue feeling like this. I don’t want you to throw away your dreams and I won’t make you chose between me and Anvil.  We have two opportunities right know Billy. Whether we go separate ways, which I don’t want at all or you find a way to have both, Anvil and me. Then you need to work on your time management because I’m not a doll to throw in a corner and get it back when it suits you. What happens now is on you.’’  you say and he gets off the couch leaving you there which makes you cry even more. He soon returns with your favorite blanket and a pack of tissues. He sits down next to you again, hands you the tissues and wraps the blanket around you. You take them gladly, blow your nose and wipe the tears away.
Billy pulls you in his arms stoking your back.
’’I’m so sorry baby. I worked so hard on Anvil, on my future - our future that I forgot what’s most important. You my love. I want to be able to take care of you. While I put all my effort in Anvil I stopped putting effort in us. I stop working on weekends. Saturdays and Sundays are ours from now on and I will be home sooner during the week. All I can say is that I am sorry. I love you with everything I have Y/n you’re the one for me. Don’t give up on me.’’
’’Promise?’’
’’Pinky promise’’ he says and holds out his finger.
’’Idiot’’ you say and laugh.
’’There is one question left Y/n.’’ you give him a questioning look at him and raise your eyebrow.
’’How can I make it up to you?’’
’’I’ve got an idea Russo.’’ you say and smirk. You grab his hand and drag him to the bedroom.
’’I love the way your brain works baby.’’ he says and you push him on the bed before you slip out of your dress.
’’Go gonna strip for me?’’ Billy asks.
’’You’re going to make it up to me not the other way around. You Mr. Russo don’t deserve it. So no I won’t be stripping for you and now get out of your clothes.’’ you reply.
’’Someone’s desperate.’’ he says and smirks.
’’Considering the fact that I can’t even remember the last time we had sex, I’m allowed to be.’’ you say as you watch him undress.
’’Well get over here then ba-.’’ before he can fishes his sentence you’re on top of him , straddling him, cutting him off with a kiss.
’’I need you Billy!’’ you say not caring how desperate it my sound.
Billy pulls his face closer to his, kissing you like his life is depending on it. His hand goes straight to you neck keeping you place.
’’Get off me Y/n.’’ he says after he releases your lips and you sit down next to him. You take off your bra while Billy takes care of your panties. As soon as you’re completely naked you lay down.
’’Relax baby I’m gonna take care of you.’’ Billy says pushing two fingers in your mouth. You suck on them right away, getting them nice and wet. Billy pulls his fingers out he starts rubbing your clit. You let out a sigh.
’’Can’t believe you’re already this wet for me. We haven’t even started yet.’’ he says and pushes his fingers inside of you. You moan loudly finally being this close to Billy again. He starts to move them in and out slowly, not wanting to make you feel uncomfortable since its been a while since you were intimate.
While he is pumping his fingers in and out you start rubbing your clit looking straight into Billys eyes.
’’Does that feel good babygirl?’’
’’So good babe’’ you say and whimper as the pleasure is building up more and more.
’’Such a good girl you are Y/n. Are you close baby?’’
’’Yes. Please let me cum.’’ you beg as you feel your orgasm building up.
All of the sudden Billy slaps your hand away and removes his fingers licking them clean.
’’You won’t cum unless my dick’s inside of you. You taste incredible by the way.’’ he says once he is done licking his fingers.
’’On your hands and knees Y/n. NOW!’’ Billy demands and you do as you’re told. He gets behind you right away. His hand moves to his now hard cock, stroking it a few times before bringing it to your pussy. He pushes the head between your folds moving up and down to tease you.
’’Stop teasing me and fuck me Russo!’’
Billy pushes himself inside you carefully. You hold onto his pillow which in laying next to you trying not to cum right away. Once he’s inside you all the way he waits a moment to make sure you okay.
’’Go on babe’’ you say and he starts to push in and out of you faster now making you jolt forward.
’’Fuck Billy just like that. Don’t make me wait that long for you ever again.’’
’’Never again Y/n. Fuck I don’t know how I was surviving without this tight beautiful pussy of yours. Shit you feel so good babygirl.’’ he says and your pussy clenches around him because of it. Billy lets out a low moan.
’’Tell me what you want Y/n’’ he says and smacks your ass a couple of times.
’’I want you and I want you hard and fast. Destroy this pussy. Show me who owns it.’’ you beg and after those words there’s no holding back for Billy.
He is now slamming his cock in and out has hard and as fast as he can. He grabs a fist full of you hair and pulls you back into his chest. Once you’re up he wraps his hand around your throat choking you slightly while the other arm wraps around your waist holding you in place.
’’That’s what you wanted right? Am I making you feel good babygirl?’’
’’Yes Billy god yes don’t stop.’’ you say and he pushes you down again.
’’Such a needy girl you are. I swear once I’m done with you, you won’t be able to walk properly for a week.’’ he says and smack you ass hard again.
Billys movements become more and more irregular and you know he is as close as you are.
’’Billy I need to cum. Please let me cum. I beg you. Please’’ you scream.
’’Cum for me baby. Cum all over my cock.’’ he says and you let go.
You arch you back and Billy can’t hold back anymore as he feels your pussy clench around him.
He finds his release inside of you not stopping to thrust inside of you. The both of you are moaning messes not wanting this feeling to end. He stays inside you for a little longer before slowly pulling out. You’re not able to move. You simply lay there trying to deal with this intense orgasm you’re pretty sure you passed out for a moment.
You feel his and your juices dripping out of you.
’’You were absolutely incredible Y/n. Fuck woman.’’ he says but you don’t reply.
’’You okay there baby?’’ Billy asks as he stokes your back. You turn your head to look at him.
’’Mhmmm’’ is all you get out.
’’You’re dick drunk Y/n’’ he says and laughs.
’’Probably. No one’s fucked me as good as you do.’’ you confess and he smiles.
’’We guess what? Your pussy is the best I’ve ever had and you know my record.’’ he says and kisses you deeply.
’’I love you William Russo.’’ you say and stoke his cheek with your thumb.
’’I love you too Y/n L/n more than anything in this world. Ready for round two?’’ he asks
’’Give me break Russo. Ask me again in 10 minutes.’’ you say and he laughs. Billy gets off the bed and pulls his phone out of his jeans before laying down next to you again.
’’What are you doing?’’ you ask.
’’Setting a timer.’’ he replies as if it’s the most normal, thing in the world.
’’You’re impossible.’’ you say shaking your head.
’’And still you love me.’’
’’True that. By the way just because you fucked me good doesn’t mean you’re off the hook yet.’’
’’That’s fine the night is still young and I meant what I said once I’m done you won’t be able to talk anymore. I will destroy this sweet little pussy of yours.’’
’’That’s a threat?’’
’’No babygirl that’s a damn promise.’’ he says with a smirk.
GX Month Day 4: “Swing of Memories”
Ah, yes, those sweet, precious memories shared with siblings...and a few you’d rather forget. Explore the bond between Asuka Tenjoin/Alexis Rhodes and Fubuki Tenjoin/Atticus Rhodes today! A sweet sibling hug? A heated argument? Show us!
Yes, I summarized and skipped over parts of the actual duel. This thing would have been so much longer if I hadn’t. Cheese and crackers this monster. O_O
This is not how Alexis expected this night to go. She almost regrets her idea for all of them to crash together when they are now standing on a magic platform above lava that will destabilize with every turn that passes. Syrus already looks ready to pass out, clinging to the back of Jaden’s jacket for dear life.
“Isn’t this counterproductive for you?!” Alexis yells at the shadowy creep. The way the darkness clings to him makes it impossible to distinguish any features, beyond the fact he wears black and that creepy mask. Even his voice sounds distorted. “If we die, you can’t duel us for the keys!”
A dark laugh like shadows on the walls. “Do you know why the Keys cannot simply be taken?” the man asks instead of answering.
“Because the Keys form a bond with whomever holds them,” Bastion snaps. Of course they already asked the important questions when Chancellor Sheppard told them about this crazy shadow war. “Therefore that bond must be broken through ritual combat.”
“Mmm, well you’re half right.” The man tilts his head, sounding smug under the layers of shadows that mask his real voice. “There’s more than one way to break a bond. A Key holder could give their Key to another- a simple, painless transfer. But I don’t expect you lot to do that. You’re far too good.” For a moment his voice is viscous, deadly, and sends a shiver down Alexis’ spine. The next he returns to almost mockingly light-hearted teasing. “However, if a Key holder dies, there’s nothing for the Key to bond to, now is there? A Key without an owner is free for the taking.”
Great, just great! So much for ‘can only be won in a duel’. If this wackjob figured out a loophole, then how many of the other Shadow Riders know about it?
Bastion inhales sharply, eyes darting back to the dark platform under their feet as Christina snarls a curse and Syrus and Chumley wail.
“Of fucking course!”
“I don’t wanna die~!”
“Don’t you worry about that.” That shadows-on-the-wall laugh again. “I’ll win this match long before you can fall. I want the pleasure of taking you all out myself.”
“Certainly confident,” Bastion grumbles, but there’s genuine fear in his eyes.
“Not gonna happen!” Jaden yells with all of his usual bravado; Alexis shouldn’t be surprised.
The duel starts to everyone’s dismay but it’s not like they actually have a way off this volcano. Alexis still doesn’t know how they got here beyond falling through the magical darkness that overtook Jaden’s dorm room. The first round isn’t anything special, the most excitement comes from Chumley’s leg falling through the platform as he tries to convince himself it’s still stable. Syrus and Chumley both scream as they all yank him back up and stare in horror at the brand new hole in the only thing between them and certain death.
“-Red-Eyes Black Dragon!”
What?
Alexis’ attention snaps back to the duel as the familiar monster takes the field in a blaze of glory and proceeds to blast Jaden back several feet. Syrus goes tumbling with him, and Christina shrieks as they come dangerously close to the edge, but Jaden skids to stop with a foot to spare, one hand braced against the platform and the other fisted in Syrus’ jacket.
Barely able to breathe, Alexis turns back to Nightshroud and Red-Eyes Black Dragon. “Why do you have that card? What did you do to my brother?!”
“Your brother?” Bastion yelps but Alexis can’t focus on anything but the man in front of her.
Nightshroud pauses, head tilting. “Who? Sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about. This card has always been mine.”
“Liar!” Alexis screams, voice raw, chest heavy. “That card is a tournament exclusive!” Atticus gushed over it for weeks, showed it off at school, more excited about the card than winning the tournament. This is the first sign she’s seen of her brother in two years! This man has to know something!
“You dare call me a liar?” A dark bolt darts out at Nightshroud’s command and sends Alexis careening back. Her foot slips off the edge.
“ALEXIS!”
Jaden yanks her back by the arm with a grip hard enough to bruise, and Alexis startles at the absolute terror in his eyes. “Hey, not cool!” He swings back around to face Nightshroud, the bravado back in full force, but this time Alexis knows what it hides. “You’re dueling me! Leave them out of this!”
Nightshroud only snorts, a derisive sound. “Then duel me, since you want to save them so badly.”
Alexis is still close enough to see the cards as Jaden draws Polymerization and fusion summons Rampart Blaster to deal Nightshroud damage even from defense position. The shadows shiver as Nightshroud suffers the pain of his own shadow game, momentarily revealing brown hair.
“Feel like talking now, buddy?” Jaden taunts with a grin.
Nightshroud’s legs shake before he stands tall once again. “I already told you! This card has always been mine! I don’t know anything about the girl’s brother!” For a moment, the shadows obscuring his voice part and it sounds almost familiar.
Rampart Blaster’s defense proves futile as Nightshroud hits Jaden directly with the spell Inferno Fire Blast. The flames that engulf Jaden are far too real for any hologram, and Jaden sinks to his knees and nearly through the platform as it gives way beneath him. Christina and Syrus scramble to drag him back up as Bastion checks him over for serious injury.
“‘M fine.” Jaden tries to brush them off and stand on his own but immediately winces and sways.
“Fine my ass!” Christina hisses.
“I’m inclined to agree!” Bastion pushes up Jaden’s sleeve to reveal an angry red splotch. “You’re covered in blisters if not more severe burns!”
“We can worry about that later!” Jaden pries his hand free with another wince as Nightshroud uses his next monster to force Rampart Blaster into attack mode.
“Wait. No.” A cold spot appears in Alexis’ chest as she takes a step back. She recognizes more than one card Nightshroud has played. “It’s not just Red-Eyes... I think he has Atticus’ whole deck.”
“What?” Christina spins from where she stands to act as Jaden’s support.
“But how is that possible?” Chumley stammers.
“I don’t know!” Alexis snaps, shaking. She has this horrible, horrible feeling. No matter what Nightshroud claims, he must have done something to her brother and taken his deck. She never once let herself consider the possibility, because it meant giving up, it meant letting her grief win, but what if... “I-”
Syrus shrieks as the platform gives way underneath him, stumbling forward as Chumley catches and hauls him back to safety. Their safe places to stand are dwindling quickly. Jaden finishes his combo by fusion summoning Thunder Giant. The two monsters’ clash ends in a draw as both are destroyed, setting up Burstinatrix for a direct attack.
“Let’s see how you like it!”
Nightshroud barely flinches against the assault of flame as the shadows around him flicker and swell as if fending off the attack. Pouting, Jaden moves onto his next play then passes the turn to Nightshroud. Mirage Dragon takes the field and Alexis startles as Nightshroud refers to the dragon with feminine pronouns. That’s how Atticus always referred to that card. Most duelists default to masculine pronouns unless the card art is obviously feminine, but Atticus was different.
-“She just gives me, ‘cranky old lady’ vibes, ya know?”- Atticus said when Alexis asked. She hadn’t known, not all, what Atticus meant.
Atticus’ deck was one thing, but this particular quirk... It couldn’t be.
Jaden goes down again as Mirage Dragon takes out Burstinatrix; Christina drags him back to his feet and away as a new hole opens up in the platform. His next turn sees Elemental Hero Tempest take the field and obliterate Mirage Dragon. This time, Nightshroud flinches as the shadows scatter off his form; and even with that mask on his face, Alexis knows what she sees.
“ATTICUS?!”
“Hold on whut?” Jaden jerks, gaping at her.
Alexis starts forward and stumbles as her foot falls through another hole.
“And who the hell is that supposed to be?” Nightshroud growls, and it’s Atticus’ voice now that the shadowy echo no longer obscures it.
“You!” Pulling herself upright, Alexis watches the floor for holes as she continues forward. Her friends call after her but she ignores them. “I know that’s you, Atticus! You really think a dumb mask would make me not recognize my own brother?!”
“My name is Nightshroud-”
“Why are you doing this? Why are you a Shadow Rider? What happened to you, Atticus?!”
“Lexi!!”
She manages to duck this time before the darkness strikes her, elbows banging hard against the platform. The breath shudders out of her and she realizes she’s crying.
“I don’t know you, little girl.”
It hurts. It hurts so much. She found him but like this and he doesn’t even know who she is. A hand on her shoulder alerts her to one of her friends, unsurprised to find Christina kneeling next to her. “It’s him...” Alexis whispers brokenly as Christina pulls her up.
“I know.”
“Why is he...” she hiccups, unable to finish the sentence. Christina squeezes her finger as she leads Alexis safely back to their friends.
Atticus summons Red-Eyes back to the field with Red-Eyes Chick’s ability then trades it in for a card Alexis has never seen before - Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon. Darkness. Nightshroud. That thing has her brother and she needs to figure out how to get him back from its clutches. Jaden ends the turn with Negate Attack, surviving to the next round. He hesitates as he draws his next card, then plays Wroughtweiler in defense and switches Tempest to defense.
“Jay?” Christina sends him a look.
“I honestly don’t have any other plays right now,” Jaden says, voice low as he glances back at her. “Besides, if that’s Lexi’s brother... Doesn’t the loser of this duel die?”
Alexis breathes in sharply. Christina hisses through her teeth.
“But what if winning gets rid of whatever is controlling him,” Bastions says. “Assuming he’s been possessed by some sort of dark power.”
“Yeah, maybe, but-”
“Jaden.” Alexis forces the words out as he turns to look at her, those eyes so full of compassion and concern. “If you lose, we all die. We can worry about the rest of it later.”
Jaden flinches. “Are you sure?”
“Of course I’m not!” Alexis loses the battle against her emotions as a fresh wave of tears overtakes her. “But what other choice do we have?”
Jaden stares at her a moment longer before turning back to face his opponent as Atticus attacks Wroughtweiler with Spear Dragon. He activates Wroughtweiler’s effect and goes down with a scream as his Life Points drop because Spear Dragon deals damage even if the monster it battles is in defense. Still, Jaden gets to add Sparkman and Polymerization back to his hand and gets back to his feet with a little help. Not that it does much good. The force of Tempest’s destruction sends him reeling back into Bastion, and Bastion yelps as the ground threatens to cave under their combined weight. Between the four of them, they manage to keep their friends on stable ground, but Jaden looks like he’s barely conscious at this point. With 600 Life Points left and their safety net looking like swiss cheese, Alexis glances at the lava below and turns back to her brother.
“Enough! Enough, Atticus! This duel is over!” she declares with all the fire she can muster. “You want a Spirit Key so badly, then you can have mine!” Ignoring the startled outburst from her friends, she pulls the object from its place around her neck and holds it out. “You said it works if it’s given freely, right? Let my friends go, and you can have it!”
“Alexis...” Jaden rasps, held upright by Christina’s arm. Alexis never looks away from her brother.
Atticus scoffs. “While I’m flattered that you’d give me your Key willingly, I’m afraid just one Key won’t do. I want them all.” His voice darkens, distorts into something unrecognizable again as the shadows rise up and cling to him. “Wait your turn, little girl. I’ll duel you next.”
“Atticus!” Alexis pleads, except this time she knows she’s not talking to her brother anymore - if she ever was - but this thing that’s taken over him.
“Make your move, Key keeper. If you can.”
Pulling his arm off Christina’s shoulders, Jaden glares his opponent down. “Oh, I can. And I’m winning this duel!”
“But you can barely sta-AAAAAA!” Syrus screams as he falls entirely through the platform. Alexis dives, catching his hand as Bastion grabs the other. Together they haul him back up while Jaden watches, pale as a sheet.
“Whatever you’re about to do, do it fast!” Chumley clasps his hand together, legs shaking so hard Alexis is surprised he still stands.
“Right!” With Christina’s hand on his shoulder, Jaden draws his card.
The combo he gets off next is a spectacular comeback. Atticus hits his knees with a scream as darkness rolls off his form in waves, and Alexis runs for him without a second thought. She doesn’t get far before the dark platform vanishes completely from beneath her feet. She has a single terrifying moment to think, This is how we die, before a bright golden light engulfs her.
When she opens her eyes again, she pushes herself off the cold, rocky ground of the mountainside while Syrus and Chumley cry over not being dead.
"What was that light? It looked like it came from your deck," Bastion murmurs, and something glows faintly as Christina shuffles through her cards with a frown, Jaden slumped against her.
Alexis spares them only a glance as she continues straight for her brother, collapsed face down on the ground feet in front of her. “Atticus!” She drops to her knees and rolls him to face her.
His eyes flutter briefly open. “Who...?” he mumbles weakly before his head lulls again, and Alexis fears the worst as she searches for his pulse. It flutters under her fingers, slow but strong, and she finally releases the breath she’d be holding. It comes out a sob.
“Is he...?” Bastion ventures closer, not daring to finish the inquiry.
“He’s alive...” Alexis breathes, cradling her brother close as another voice breaches the mountain air.
“Heeeey! What’s going on over here?!”
Alexis looks up as Zane and Chazz come running. “Zane. Zane!” she calls, heedless to how broken her voice is and doesn’t miss the way Zane immediately speeds up. “It’s him! It’s Atticus!” She holds her brother closer as Zane freezes in his tracks, face flooding with shock. “I found him...”
“What-” Zane croaks as he kneels next to them slowly, and reaches out like he expects Atticus to disappear under his fingers. The emotions that play out over his face when his hand lands on Atticus’ shoulder are too complicated to name. “What happened?”
“I don’t know.”
They sit in silence like that for another moment, just soaking in that Atticus is back. Then Zane shifts to slide his arms under Atticus’ limp form. “Here.” Nodding, Alexis moves aside to let Zane lift Atticus into his arms. Some distance away, her friends hoist an unconscious Jaden onto Chumley’s back.
“If he looks this bad after winning, I don’t wanna know what losing looks like,” Chazz gripes.
“That?” Syrus points hesitantly at Atticus.
“What?”
Zane sends Alexis a sharp look. “He was a Shadow Rider,” Alexis whispers, and glances away as Zane’s expression breaks again. “He didn’t recognize me. That’s all I know.”
“Okay,” Zane says at length and they begin the long trek down the mountain.
Alexis still has so many questions...and fears. She once thought finding her brother would make everything okay again, but now... Now she’s scared this is only the beginning rather than the end she sought. What if he wakes up and still doesn’t recognize her? Can she handle that? Can she handle learning what turned him into a Shadow Rider? Her hand fists itself into Zane’s coat tail. If he notices, he doesn’t comment.
Young Hearts Divided (10/?)
Pairing: Sirius Black x Female!Reader / James Potter x Female!Reader
Warnings: mild swearing
Word Count: 1.6k
Part Summary: After Remus and Y/N have their heart-to-heart, something unexpected happens
Masterlist
Tumblr media
"Y/N!" A third party shouts from the door below.
Remus and I exchange glances of confusion at the sudden interruption.
"Y/N!" The voice echoes again and this time I recognize it to be Sirius's.
Swiftly, Remus and I rise from our positions to see what the fuss is about. Based on the urgent sound of Sirius's tone, I imagine this isn't him simply looking for me.
Remus follows me down the spiral stairwell and I can hear the hurried pace of Sirius climbing them. We meet half-way and he wears a bewildered expression. He glances between Remus and me with confusion but doesn't make a remark as I excepted. Instead, he takes my hand starts to lead me down the stairs.
"McGonagall came to the Common Room looking for you," he explains as we descend the tower to the door. "She wouldn't go into details other than that it has to do with your brother."
Upon hearing Sirius's words, I don't hesitate to start sprinting out of the tower and down the hall.
"Y/N!" Sirius and Remus call my name in unison.
The boys struggle to keep up as I run full pace to McGongallas office as I'm sure that's where she's gone. My mind is racing with possibilities. Where is my brother? Is Danny okay? Who took him? Have they found him?
Though it would be nearly impossible for me to not become tired after running from the Astronomy Tower to McGonagall's office on a normal day, currently I don't feel a thing. Remus and Sirius, however, are panting like dogs behind me when I enter her office. Sure enough, the professor is behind her desk with a fire going behind her. When she peers up and over her glasses from her grading, her face falters.
"Miss Y/L/N, good. It appears Mr. Black was able to find you," she remarks satisfied as she rises from her chair. As she crosses the room, she raises her hand to gesture to the door. "You may wait outside gentlemen," McGonagall announces to Remus and Sirius. "Unless, of course, Miss Y/L/N prefers for you to stay?"
All six eyes look to me for an answer and I become unintentionally short with them. "I don't really care who stays and who goes! All I want to know is the news about Danny!"
Remus and Sirius flicker their wide-eyes to McGonagall, waiting for a response. Never in the history of Hogwarts has anyone ever spoken to McGonagall so rashly, maybe a Slytherin, but even then that's a long shot.
I release a sigh and immediately feel apologetic. I didn't mean to snap at her, none of this is her fault. I'm just tired of the pointless dramatics and everyone looking to me for answers. Sometimes I simply want to answer 'I don't know!'
"Very well," McGonagall replies calmly, despite my aggression.
The woman presses her palm to my back and escorts me to sit in the chair across from her desk. She moves back to her seat and settles down. Remus and Sirius remain back by the door. Sirius leans against the wall with his arms crossed and Remus stands straight as though he's in a line-up.
"Your brother, Miss Y/L/N, has been located," McGonagall reveals and a weight rises off my chest.
My eyes fall shut as I lean back in my chair with a deep sigh of relief. At least we know where he is and thus we can do something now. Thank the universe he's alive.
"But Miss Y/L/N, there's something else I must tell you," the woman speaks hesitantly.
My eyes fly open and I stare at her sharply. Her tone worries me. The weight that disappeared has returned to me. She rubs her hands together in fists anxiously. I grip the handles of the chair to release some tension, but nothing seems to work.
"What is it?" I press for her to continue.
I hear footsteps behind me followed by a hand on my shoulder landing on my shoulder. I glance up and Sirius stands over me, his eyes locked on our professor.
"What is it, Minnie?" Sirius repeats sternly, though I can see the worry hidden in his eyes.
McGonagall frowns, clearly distraught, nearly sick to her stomach. When her eyes leave Sirius and land back on me, a chill shoots down my spine. This really isn't good.
"He's dead, isn't he?"
My tone comes out emotionless as though I'm asking a question in class and not something of this magnitude. I even surprise myself, along with everyone else in the room. I'm just so tired. I'm not sure I can take another blow.
McGonagall shakes her head frantically. "No, no, I assure you Danny is alive and well. The concerning part is... Well... he wasn't taken."
My brows scrunch together in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"You see, your brother wasn't taken by the Death Eaters..." She drags out nervously. "He um... Well, we learned that he..."
Comprehending what she's going to say, I start to shake my head repeatedly. "No, no, no," I stutter.
Sirius moves forward to stand in front of me. "What?! What is it?" He glances between McGonagall and me.
I rise from my seat and slowly start to the door as my eyes remain locked on the floor. She's lying! She has to be! Danny wouldn't, he could never be. Remus steps forward from the wall to help me toward the door. He presses his palm to my shoulder bland and lowers his head to my level to see my hidden face. Tears whelm up in my eyes and threaten to fall. It isn't true. It can't be true!
"Can someone please tell me what the bloody hell is going on?!" Sirius shouts. "Did I blackout and miss an entire minute of that conversation?!"
"Shut up Sirius!" Remus huffs at his friend. "Come on Y/N, let's head back," he guides me gently.
"Miss Y/L/N," McGonagall says my name pleadingly, completely ignoring Sirius. "You have to hear this, Dear! I have to make sure you understand the circumstances!"
I whip my head around to face the woman I once considered as close to me as another motherly figure. Now... Now I don't know how to view her. The tears that threatened to fall do so freely down my cheeks. The expression on McGonagall's face is foreign to me. I've never seen her cry, but she may now.
"My brother-" I hiss sharply through my teeth, "-is not a Death Eater. Anyone who calls him so is vile and I will gladly hex them to oblivion!"
"Y/N!" Remus gasps quietly next to me.
McGonagall stares me directly in the eye with parted lips of amazement. It's not every day a student threatens a professor. I would threaten Dumbledore himself if he were to cross my family. My parents raised me to care for all wizards and creatures. For someone to say that anyone in my family follows the Dark Lord is horrid. My brother could never do such a thing. He's my older brother, he loves me, wants what's best for me. He would never betray my family like that.
"I think we should go," Sirius determines as he marches over to me.
"Listen to reason, Y/N." McGonagall says my name calmly, dropping the formalities now considering the turn of events.
"I assure you, I am," I bark disdainfully. "If you knew Danny as I do, you would know that this is nothing but wartime paranoia. He could never follow You-Know-Who!"
"Let's go, Love," Sirius whispers to me, urging me out the door.
Reluctantly, I follow their guidance down the stairs to the classroom. If I were alone, I would've blasted McGonagall to her fireplace mantel.
"Keep walking," Sirius mutters in my ear.
"He has the Dark Mark!" She shouts as the boys lead me away against my reluctance.
Upon hearing her words, I turn over my shoulder and start back toward her office. Sirius's arms wrap around my waist and fling back into his chest. I fight him off and Remus moves to block my path. Well don’t these two have a nice little tag-team game going!
"Y/N! Y/N, listen to me!"Remus repeats, cupping my face to force me to look at him. "Tune her out, okay! Everything will be okay! We’ll figure it out! You don't want to do anything rash!”
"You must know this, Y/N! For your own safety!" Our professor adds worriedly.
"Remus if she keeps talking you're going to have to hold me back too," Sirius grunts as he struggles to drag me toward the corridor.
"Believe me, I'm not too thrilled either and I usually side with the professors," Remus grumbles. "If you figured out what was going on sooner, maybe we could've gotten Y/N out of there!"
"Oh yeah! Blame me for the chaos as per usual!" Sirius defends.
"Usually it is you! 99% of the time," Remus scoffs.
"Let me go!" I bark at Sirius, clawing at his forearms tight around my torso.
"Can't you do a spell to knock her out?!" Sirius speaks of me as if I'm not even here. "It's like trying to hold you back during a full moon!"
I growl,"you pull out your wand Remus and I swear I’ll hex you!”
Nervously, Remus switches his gaze between me and Sirius. I dig my nails into Sirius's arms to weaken his grip and the boy hisses.
"Remus!" He barks.
Remus sighs and looks to me apologetically. "I'm sorry, it's really for the best."
"Remus I swear-"
The boy removes his wand from his back pocket and makes a zig-zag formation with it.
"Nighty-night, Love," Sirius mutters.
In seconds, my vision goes black.
Path of Destruction [Part 2] | JEON JUNGKOOK
Tumblr media
PAIRING: Jungkook x Reader
GENRE: Drama, Angst (maybe???), Thriller
WARNINGS: Stalking, obsession, too much swearing, dirty talks, possessive Jungkook, touching (...might be too uncomfortable :c)
WORD COUNT: 1900
Tumblr media
Darkness. Silence. And awkwardness filled the entire room. You had no idea where you were right now. All you knew was that you were already caught by your stalker, whose name you didn’t know yet.
You looked around waiting for the presence of the stalker to appear in front of you. It felt like horrible long hours. Where the hell was this person, anyway?
As you were in a deep thought of your sister, the footsteps were heard to approach you. You were so terrified. What if this person’s next plan was to kill you and had your corpse lying next to him? His obsession was too visible. He could do anything just to have you by his side forever.
You slowly backed away when he moved a little closer, but to your surprise, all he ever brought to you was a glass of water. Huh? your thought questioned. You carefully took the glass from his hand and he chuckled seeing you shaking in fear.
“Don’t be scared, twinkle toes,” he leaned forward and you quickly looked away. “I won’t bite unless... you want me to?”
His smirk disgusted you. You were about to slap him but he was damn quick to catch your hand. He guffawed while looking at you, admiring your behavior so much.
“Damn. With you being so feisty like this, who knows what you can do in bed?” He leaned forward to you again, sniffing your scent and you couldn’t help but to be in tears right now. You felt defeated since there was no one around to help you. Not even your sister who was the only person you can rely on. Michelle couldn’t hear your sobs. She couldn’t hear you cry right now. You were trapped in a very hidden place. With this creepy stalker.
As you were crying, he took the opportunity to kiss your earlobe, then slowly down to your jawline. You gasped when his sneaky little hand began to caress your thigh.
“Stop it!” you exclaimed. This was shocking even for you, since you thought he would have continued what he was doing. But instead, he quickly backed off. He suddenly ruffled his hair in frustration. He mumbled things and just like that, he walked away to avoid you.
What the fuck was that all about? You went to check whether he was gone for real and when you realized he wasn’t there anymore, you drank the water quick in one gulp.
••••••
{11.53 p.m. at Suzie’s house}
“Where’s your friend, Suz? I thought you said she’d be here. It’s almost 12.” a friend of Suzie’s asked. Suzie looked at the clock and now she was a little worried. You were supposed to be there an hour ago.
“Maybe she fell asleep. You know how her school is,” Suzie took a sip of her coffee. “so damn dreadful.” Her friends laughed hearing Suzie’s dramatic tone.
But Suzie, being the closest friend you’ve ever had, she sensed there was indeed something wrong. She felt like you were in trouble because she was now feeling uneasy. You’ve always been the type to be careful wherever you’d go, and she knew for the fact that you were the type of a person who’d sleep at 1 or 2 a.m. Never this ‘early’ at nearly 12 a.m.
••••••
You were sure as hell confused when this stalker went to his room without a word. This night just kept getting weirder and weirder.
Hearing how quiet his room was, you decided to roam around this place. Where was this place even located? Where on Earth did he bring you?
You had your eyes travelled everywhere around this living room; the worn-out sofas, the dusty table, but one that caught your attention; a framed picture of you.
You quickly picked it up and looked closely at the picture. There was a short note at the bottom right of it. “ONLY Jeon Jungkook’s girl.”
Jeon Jungkook? That’s his name? You were too focused on the picture and the note that you didn’t realize he was already standing next to you and looking at you. When you noticed him, you gasped and dropped the picture, quickly backing away from him.
“Relax, twinkle toes. It’s just me.” He chuckled and picked the picture up, placing it back neatly on the shelf.
The fear began to build itself inside you when he turned to face you, giving you a soft smile.
“You’re Jeon Jungkook?” He acted as if a love cupid just struck him, placing his hand dramatically on his chest.
“Say my name again, Y/N..” he whispered while you were giving him a confused look.
“Why should I sa-” your words were cut off when he began to walk slowly towards you and your back was now against the wall, and he now got you locked in between his arms when he rested his palms on it.
“You make it sound so magical..” he began to twirl your hair. “I’ve never liked my name until you said it.”
You shook your head. Never liking his name. Was that even for real? Or was that just a trick to get into your pants?
“Say my name again, Y/N.” His voice was now dark and with a warning tone. You were starting to feel scared with the sudden change of his voice, joined by his angry, darkened eyes as well.
“J-Jeon Jungkook.” you gulped nervously after you said his name again. His eyes were now moving down to look at your lips. As he was about to make his next move, that was to kiss you, you grabbed the chance to push him away harshly and you quickly ran to the opposite side. You looked around to find a weapon near you, and in this case, the table lamp was a good one to defend yourself from this guy.
“What the fuck do you want from me?!” your voice was cracked. You were crying again while lifting the table lamp to get ready to hit him just in case he wanted to make another inappropriate move. “WHY ME?! WHY THE FUCK CAN’T IT BE SOMEONE ELSE?!!”
He was licking his lips when he turned around to you, looking at you with full of lust. Full of hunger, like he was already ready to devour you.
“Fuck having ‘someone else’. I only want you.” He was approaching you and you quickly swung the table lamp in front of his face to not let him touch you.
“Stop! Don’t fucking come near me!” you cried out. Despite many attempts of defending yourself, Jungkook was so fast at dodging and avoiding to get hit from the lamp. His patience was running low now. He aggressively grabbed it from your hands and threw it somewhere else.
“Noooo! No, fuck!” You ran around the place and he was chasing after you. You were too focused on looking back at him while running that the next thing happened was your foot tripped on something.
You were in a rush to crawl forward but Jungkook beat you into it first, pulling your leg, hovering over you and locked both of your hands, pinning them above your head. At this point, he didn’t give a damn seeing you in tears. You were already making him mad.
“Don’t fucking fight me, Y/N, or else I’ll be inside you right here. Right now.” The next thing he did was removing his pants as well as your uniform skirt.
“Noooo! No, please! Don’t do this to me!” He was taking his shirt off now.. and you widened your eyes when he began to pull your shirt up.
“Jungkook, please don’t do this to me..” you managed to say between sobs. Just like that, he stopped what he was doing.
Why did it feel like whenever you mentioned his name, it was just like an on and off switch for him? It felt like he was obeying you when you said it. Was your voice saying his name really his big weakness?
Unexpectedly, he pulled your shirt down and put your skirt back on. He also put his pants back on, but he still kept his position the same. He was still above you and now, he began to hug you so tight while locking both of your hands.
“I don’t want anyone else, Y/N,” he whispered as he hid his face on the crook of your neck. “I don’t know what fucking spell you’ve casted on me the moment I saw you. It’s been years now and I can never get over you..”
You looked up at the ceiling while paying close attention to what he was saying.
“You remember your douchebag ex-boyfriend, Trevor?” You hated that name. It stung you so much when Jungkook mentioned him to you. Trevor was the name of the asshole that cheated on you multiple times. The guy who made you believe love was never real. “I really wanted to kill him when I saw him making you cry. You cried nearly for a week. You didn’t eat when Michelle cooked you a lot of meals. You’ve got yourself trapped in your room and you were lying in bed for the whole day and night.”
What? you thought. Has he been really watching me for all of those long years?
“I could have made you happy after that fucker left,” you weren’t hearing it wrong, Jungkook was now crying as you heard his voice crack. “but my hopes were temporarily gone when I heard you told Suzie you weren’t looking for love anymore.”
You bit your lower lip as you were trying too hard not to let your tears out. You remembered that story. Suzie and Michelle were the only ones who were there for you, but you didn’t tell Michelle much about what happened between you and Trevor. You didn’t want to worry Michelle much with your sob story, so this matter was only known deeply by Suzie. ... and Jungkook as well since he was listening to every word you said to her. ‘I don’t believe in love anymore. I’ve lost hope in that shit.’ These were the flashback words that hurt Jungkook so much. He wanted to be there for you, but knowing you didn’t want to be in love with anyone anymore, he thought watching you from afar was a good idea. But never thought that watching you could lead to a dangerous obsession with you.
As previous years passed, Jungkook wanted nothing but to touch you here and there, to kiss you and to give you the love you truly deserved. He wanted to be the person who made you happy. But you didn’t trust men anymore. Not even that gentleman who had all of the girls’ in your school hearts melted, Adrian.
“I’ve never felt so much towards anyone before. You drive me the craziest, Y/N.. I tried to stop b-but,” he was sobbing. “there’s always something that pulls me back to you. It’s like something always tells me to never give up on you.”
You were having a lot of mixed feelings right now. It was a lot to take in. He softly placed a kiss on your neck and you didn’t care to defend yourself anymore. You were too weak but thankfully, Jeon didn’t take another step further.
“Just...” his next words shocked you. “let me love you, Y/N.”
A Telford Tea Party
A/N: Pure, unadulterated FLUFF. Inspired by my favorite thirsty Flanagan obsessed girls and what’s said in our chat.
Chibs x Reader
This has not been proofread and therefore may contain spelling or grammatical errors. Oops.
TW: Nothing should be triggering unless you hate daddies having tea parties with their little girls.
(this gif just seemed appropriate somehow. Not mine, credit to the maker.)
*******************************************************
Dada... Chibs grumbled burying his face in his pillow. "Dada." He cracked one eye open and squint, scanning the bits of room he could see when a little face was suddenly taking up his whole view. "Daddy." The four year old girl said firmly, letting him know he wouldn't be going back to sleep. He smiled sleepily and moved an arm from under his pillow to tuck some of her silky brunette hair from her face. "Mornin', Tilly." He graveled. Her hazel eyes lit up and she giggled. "Goo monin'!" She smiled brightly. Chibs groaned as he rolled to his back again and stretched as his daughter knelt on the bed, the empty half of the bed. "Where's yer Ma?" He asked with a yawn, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "Da movie place." She told him. "Aun'ie Lyla as'ed her fo' sum'tin. Baby Mal wen', too." "Oh, okay." He thanked her for explaining it further. "Daddy, can we have a tea party?" She begged, giving him puppy dog eyes. "Do we hafta?" Chibs grumped. "Pweeeeeeease?" The little girl plead and clasped her hands in front of herself. He sighed, it didn't take much for the little one to get her way with him. "Fine." He huffed, scoffing at his lack of will power. "Lemme take a shower quick, okay?" "O'tay!" "Go ge' yer sissy an' set up in the playroom." He told her, tickling her side and making her squeal and jump off the bed. "BRINNNNAAAAAAA!!!" She hollered as she raced out the bedroom door. After showering and quickly dressing in black jeans and black SAMCRO t-shirt, Chibs went into the kitchen to grab a jug of sweet tea and tin of shortbread. However, as he turned the corner, he was greeted with the sight of his six year old standing on the counter next to the fridge, the four year old standing on the chair they'd pushed over there, and their six year old brindled shepherd mix Jameson prancing excitedly in place watching his little humans going after something near the treats he couldn't reach and hoping they'd knock the container down. The pajama clad girls- the pair looked nearly identical save for the elder being a head taller- froze in place and stared wide-eyed at him. "Sabrina Rose. Matilda Mae." Chibs said sternly, setting his fists on his hips. "Uh-oh." They gasped in unison. Chibs scooped them up and set them on the hardwood floor. "Couldn' wait ten minutes, eh?" He asked in amusement. He shook his head, chuckling and ruffled their long hair. He reached on top of the refrigerator and took the blue tin the girls had been after, handing it to his oldest. "I'll get the tea." Y/N opened the truck door and reached in to get the three month old out of his carseat as he babbled and waved his orange rattleball around. The neck of his green dinosaur onesie was covered in slobber and drool. "Yes, yes, yes. We're so happy, aren't we? Yes, we are." Y/N cooed as she picked the baby up and held under his butt as he leaned into her shoulder. "Auntie Lyla and the girls spoiled you, didn't they? I saw them sneaking you whipped cream. All that damn sugar's got you wound up." She slung the Harley Davidson diaper bag over her shoulder and grabbed the bag of groceries she'd picked up on the way home before heading to the front door. Once inside, she set the bags on the kitchen table and shift her son to her other arm. "Now, where's Daddy and the girls, huh?" She asked the baby. He looked at his mother curiously before letting out a shrill scream of joy. Y/N cringed. "Malcolm Robert Telford, you're gonna make my ears bleed." In the playroom, Chibs shift uncomfortably in his tiny, tiny pink chair. He would've liked to have sit on the floor, but his girls insisted he had to sit at the table like a proper gentleman. He watched Tilly- a sky blue fairy costume on over her pajamas including wings with an Anna from Frozen glittery tiara- pick up the little plastic pink teapot in the middle of the round white table and pour nothing into a mismatched tiny purple teacup in front of one of their guests. "Mo' tea, Mr. Bear?" She asked the large teal teddy bear. She turned to her other side and poured some into a large blue teacup for her sister's yellow lab, Jax. "May I have more tea, Daddy?" Brina asked in a horrible attempt at some kind of European accent. While her younger sibling was clearly a typical girly-girl, Sabrina wasn't. She, too, wore a costume dress but her's was black velvet with gold trim. She looked like a regal witch or vampire... if it weren't for the mini felt top hat and the headband that made it look like she had an arrow through her head. "Of course, sweethear'." He replied warmly and picked up the larger stainless steel teapot. Clinking came from inside from ice cubes sloshing around as he poured iced tea into her cup which was actually a black enamel camping mug. "Can I have a'nudder cookie?" Tilly asked sweetly, not bothering to fake an accent. "Haven' ya already 'ad three?" Chibs asked, raising an eyebrow and already knowing the answer. "Nooooo." His younger daughter trailed off not looking her father in the eye. Sabrina cackled at her sister's bad acting. Chibs pretend to wipe his face to hide his smirk. "How abou' we split one?" He compromised and picked up a shortbread from the Santa platter the girls had piled them on. Tilly nodded eagerly and held out her little plastic Disney Inside Out Joy dessert plate. Chibs broke the cookie in two pieces as even as he could and set one half on her plate and the other on his red Elmo face plate. "Daddy! Your hat!" Sabrina exclaimed realizing Chibs had taken it off at some point without them noticing. He reached up and felt his head. "Oh no! It's gone!" He cried, faking shock. "Someone stole it!" He shout, so clearly upset at this revelation. Tilly started frantically looking behind the plushies and lifting plates up as if the rainbow striped pinwheel hat would be hiding under them. Brina searched in the nearest toy chest, suspicious. The last two times the hat went missing, that's where it was. She slammed the lid shut hopelessly when her search came up empty. "Sissy, look'it!" Matilda ordered pointing a little index finger across the room. Chibs internally cringed and prayed the hat was destroyed by now. "Jamie, no!" Sabrina rushed the dog and began tugging the hat from him. He growled lightly and tugged back, wagging his tail and thinking she wanted to play. Unfortunately for the mutt, he'd done enough damage already that one more solid yank and the fabric seperated with an audible rrrrrrrip. The little girl flopped on her behind with a thump. "Bad dog!" She reprimanded him. Jameson spit out his half of the rainbow and whimpered, approaching the little girl and snuffling around her head. He licked her cheeks and she scrunched her shoulders, shrieking with laughter at his tickly whiskers and unable to stay mad at the innocent beast. "Wha's Daddy supposed to wear now? He needs a hat!" The young toddler declared before scurrying to the dress-up closet. Chibs whistled and called the dog off his daughter, her face having been slurped on enough. "Go lay down, ya mongrel." He chide goodnaturedly. He helped his daughter wipe her face off with a napkin. "I found a hat, Daddy!" Matilda proclaimed, emerging from the closet and holding something up triumphantly. Chibs face feel momentarily at the sight before changing his expression to something neutral. "Maybe no' tha' one, princess." He denied gently. The green plastic bowler hat was missing a chunk of hat and the white ribbon with four leaf clovers that usually wrapped around it was dangling over the edge of the rim like a graduation cap tassel. The little girl frowned and studied the hat. "I guess not." She agreed sadly and chucked it in the small trash bin between the girls' drawing tables. Seeing her sister on the verge of crying, Sabrina hurried over and ushered her back into the closet to help her find a more suitable hat. Y/N stood in the doorway watching her husband interact with their girls. Malcolm was quietly sucking on his thumb, head laying on her shoulder. It melt her heart every time she saw them all. Filip was always so good with his children and the girls had him wrapped around their little pinkies most of the time. He was stern when he needed to be, but honestly the girls were rarely brats. She swooned when she saw Matilda run to her father and hold up a plastic gold crown with colored jewel beads adorning it. Chibs gushed at how perfect the item was and scooped the girl up, standing her on his knees so she could place it on his head. Thrilled, Tilly set the crown atop his head and declared him king of the tea party. She hopped back to the carpeted floor as Sabrina joined her and the pair curtsied before their king. "Greetings, my liege." Chibs snapped his eyes up and found his wife and baby boy watching them from the doorway. A loving smile gracing Y/N's face. "Miladies," He addressed his daughters. "Look! Tis my Queen returned from her travels!" The girls curtsied to her. Y/N curtsied back with a soft giggle. "I do apologize for missing tea time. I needed to acquire more covers and a rash tincture for Prince Malcolm's royal fanny." Her daughters roared with laughter, falling to the floor in a pile of wiggly court jesters. The baby picked his head up and watched his big sisters before giggling sleepily. Chibs groaned as he stood. He pressed his hands to his lower back, leaning backwards to stretch his aching bones. He carefully skirt around the flopping sillies on the floor and held his hands out with wide eyes and big smile. "There's ma'boy!" He cheered. His smile threatened to split his face in two when he saw the baby boy excited to see him. Malcolm screeched and giggled, trying to fling himself from his mother's arms towards his father. "Hiya! Were ya good fer yer Mama?" He questioned in a voice he reserved for babies. "Didya go see Auntie Lyla? Was she filmin'?" He heard Y/N scoff as she fixed the little one's cotton shorts. "Ha! No. Say we didn't see any of that naughty stuff, Daddy." Y/N told her son to say knowing he'd just babble or blow a spit bubble instead. She looked to her husband as he kissed the light haired, blue-grey eyed bundle of joy all over his head and cheeks. "They were on lunch... brunch, I guess? when we got there. Everyone in robes, dirty bits hidden from innocent eyes." "Tha's a shame." Chibs joked earning a backhand on his free shoulder. He snickered and winked at Y/N before leaning in for a kiss. "Missed ya." He muttered against her lips. "Mm, you missed sleeping till noon." Y/N teased. "Tha', too." He agreed with a cheeky grin. "Daddy, can we go to the park?" Matilda asked, the girls' laughing fit having subsided finally. Chibs turned to his wife. Before Y/N could answer Malcolm started grunting, his face going red before the unpleasant sounds of a much needed diaper change filled their ears. "EEWWW!" The girls exclaimed, faces scrunched up in disgust. "We can go later, okay?" Y/N told them. "It's lunchtime now, then naptime." The girls started whining. "Hey, no whining." "No nap, no park." Chibs said, backing up his wife. The girls scowled, knowing it was too late to try to persuade him otherwise now that he showed he was with Mom. "Keep makin' tha' face an' it'll stick like tha'." He threatened, a sideways glance to Y/N who gave him a mischevious half-grin. "I'll ge' the lad changed an' down fer his nap." He told her, kissing her cheek. Y/N sighed softly, leaning into his lips. "Okay. We'll clean up in here and get lunch going." She decided, stepping aside to let the boys out of the room. "Come along, ya wee bug. We'll get a fresh nappie, read tha' book abou' a wee mouse an' a biscuit, play some o' tha' Celtic lullaby music ya love, an' have a bit o' dreamin'. Sound good?" Chibs spoke softly to his son as he moved down the hallway to the baby's room. Y/N turned to her daughters, taking out her phone and snapping a picture of the dressed up pair before smiling at them. "Shall we have chicken fingers for lunch?" She quiered. The girls nod enthusiastically. "Anything else?" "Neeps an' tatties!" Chibs called down the hallway. Y/N rolled her eyes, but the girls were already getting more excited. The girls loved her homemade mashed potatoes and turnips. "Alright, then. I think we have some mash leftover from dinner." She sighed. "Start cleaning and I'll get the chicken in the oven." She told the girls. "Okay, Mama!" They agreed as she turned and made her way to the kitchen. Once the food was warming up, she was jotting something down on the grocery list on the counter when the sounds in her house distracted her. Sabrina and Matilda were giggling with each other, toys and make believe sets were clattering here and there as the siblings no doubt were throwing everything haphazardly into random toy chests, the rumbles of Chibs' Scottish brogue float down the hallway as he read a bedtime story to their baby, and the sounds of yipping and collar tags jingling were heard from the living room as Jameson dreamed of chasing squirrels. Y/N breathed deeply and sighed, content. This was her favorite thing in the world. The sounds of home.
He runs.
 He runs past Patton, he shoves open his door, locks it behind him, then lunges through the portal hidden under his bed that Remus had installed years ago, when he’d first moved to the light side, a shortcut to his imagination, to the dark side. He pulls the trapdoor shut behind him, landing on the forest floor with barely a sound.
 Colors are brighter, stranger, he’s pretty sure in this form he can actually see colors others can’t, see at a spectrum impossible for humans, since he isn’t, not really. That thought chokes a sob out of him, though it comes out as more of a growling hiss, and he throws himself back into movement, speeding across the ground, jumping up, into the trees, when they become too dense, seeing the cliff approaching, but not slowing, he braces himself, springs, his stomach flip flopping as he drops-
 Then he shoots his web and latches onto the trees on the other side, swinging across the canyon. If he were in a better mood, he’d be laughing right now, at the feel of the wind, at moving so fast, at letting himself go, more than he has in years, letting himself go feral, but he isn’t, his heart is pounding and his breath is speeding and he’s moving, faster and faster, and faster-
 Then, suddenly, there’s no more trees.
 He doesn’t have time to stop his momentum. He manages to web the ground, before he crashes onto it, letting his shoulder impact first, easily slipping into a barrel roll, before losing control and tumbling across the earth, head spinning as he finally comes to a stop, hissing through clenched teeth as he sits up, taking in the damage.
His shoulder is bruised to hell, and scraped raw and bloody, and so are his legs, his hands, though his appendages are intact. There’s a gash on his forehead, and he curses, pulling his sleeve over his hand, pressing it against the wound to try and staunch the bleeding, letting out another hissing breath at the ache in his chest, a bruised or cracked rib.
 He’s crying. He doesn’t know when it started, he feels too numb to cry, but he is, a steady, endless flow of tears that wash down his face, and he squeezes his eyes closed, doubling over, legs closing in around him, hiding him from view.
 “Hello, little one.” He nearly jumps, at the sudden low and sonorous voice, but he doesn’t care, he simply curls tighter, trying to suppress the pathetic whimper trying to escape his lips. “You aren’t one of the usual resident monstrosities of Remus’s design. Are you new?” He flinches hard, this time, realizing what he’s being mistaken for, because he must truly look horrendous, and Patton, god, Patton, not to mention Roman, once he hears, and Logan will just want to study him, dissect him, like some specimen, he doesn’t want to be the monster, he isn’t, he isn’t, he isn’theisn’theisn’t- “Let me take a look at you, darling. I can help make it better.” He pulls his legs in tighter, shaking, forcing words to his lips.
 “N-no. G-g-go away.” He hisses, and he hears a sharp inhale.
 “Anxiety. You… aren’t supposed to be here.” He laughs, at that, a cold, hard, bitter laugh.
 “look at me. Where else could I go?” He bares his fangs, eyes flashing and shadows growing as he feels hands pushing aside his legs, gently tipping his chin up, meeting the orange cat’s eyes of the dragon witch.
 “I remember a time when you wore this form more often than not. You and Remus were feral little things, more beast than man, some days, all shadowy blobs of too many teeth and limbs and claws, with your venomous bites and poison laced scratches, I remember when you’d spend hours, weaving the most wonderous tapestries, that sparkled so brilliantly, in the morning dew. Or ones near invisible, that would trip up Remus, as he tried to invade your lair. Once you wouldn’t have consolidated monstrous, with evil, they are different. Plenty of monstrous things are still beautiful, after all. Plenty of monstrous things are still smart, and kind, and sweet, little one. I would have hoped that to be a lesson you remembered, still.” Her words are soft and gentle as she caresses his cheek, a tender smile on her lips. “I haven’t forgotten, my tiny terror.” He folds, falling into her open arms and sobbing, letting it all go, as her near black wings enfold them both, her tail gently coiling around his feet. She doesn’t say anything, simply holds him, rocks him as he cries, promising safety with her steady presence, her slightly hotter than normal warmth. “I gather from your state you don’t want to go back to the world?” He shakes his head frantically, not moving from his place in her arms. “alright, darling. Hold on tight, for a moment.” He feels a slight vertigo, the world running like a watercolor painting, before resettling to a homey looking cottage, a fire lit and providing gentle warmth, the floors covered in soft rugs, the smell of cinnamon and something else, something warm and fizzing and popping in the air. Magic.
 “If you want tea, you’ll have to let go.” He does with a slightly rueful smile, one she adores, and she brushes back his hair, before moving to put the kettle on, getting her favorite teacup from the cupboard, along with a black and white chipped jack Skellington mug.
 “you still have that?” He says, voice coming out hoarse, as he pulls himself into one of the surprisingly comfy wooden chairs surrounding the small table in the kitchen, watching as she bustles about.
 “Of course. I hoped I’d have occasion to use it again. Though I admit I hoped it would be under better circumstances.” He winces, looking away.
 “sorry. For not visiting. I… I should have. Me and Ree hadn’t been on the best terms, for… well, for a while. I didn’t want to chance being caught here by myself.”
 “Yes. I heard all about it, believe me. He fluctuated between grief, despair, and unmitigated rage, before settling on a scarily distant disdain. Any mention of you and he just… shut down.”
 “sorry.” He whispers again, to her soft huff.
 “Stop apologizing, darling. I’m not placing blame or accusing. I know you had your reasons. Now, let me have a look at you, we can’t have those getting infected, and you know they will.” He groans, wincing as he pulls his sleeve away from his forehead.
 “But it stings!” He whines, making her laugh, as she gathers the warm water and soft hand towel.
 “You’ve had worse, Anxiety. And unless you want me to summon Remus to instant heal you, we’ll have to do it the old fashioned way.” Her voice is slightly stern now, the same tone Patton always takes, when scolding them or breaking up a fight, and he smiles slightly, glancing up at her.
 “alright. It’s, um, Virgil, now, by the way.” She smiles, coming around the table and gently dabbing away the dried blood from the gash, wincing in sympathy as he grits his teeth, before patting it dry and securing gauze. “Ah. It suits you, I think." He pulls up his pants to reveal his skinned knees, his shins peppered with scrapes, though nothing there is hurt too badly, though it still stings like a son of a gun. They’re just finishing looking at his shoulder, her turning away to get an icepack for it, when he hears the tell tale swing of the doggy door, small scratching against the mat in the entryway.
 “Oh, god-“ He manages to just barely brace himself, as a ball of icy silvery blue barrels into his chest, knocking his chair over backwards, sending his arms pinwheeling before he collides with the floor, his fall slowed slightly by a quick spell, that lowers him gently the last inch to avoid concussing him. He doesn’t have time to thank her, however, as his face is getting destroyed by licks, and he can’t get a word out edgewise, between his pleas to stop, and his gasping laughter.
 “Nilas, stop, down girl, NiNi!” He laughs, finally managing to get the large cat sized dragon under control, though her tail still whipped wildly, and when he rolled out of the chair to sit up on the floor, she instantly climbed his shirt, draping herself around his shoulders, tail hanging off one, curling around his upper bicep to keep herself steady, her head resting on her paws on his other. He laughs again at her low, contented chuffing, the equivalent of a dragon purr, as he scratches her head. “Happy to see me, huh?” She buts her head against his cheek in response, before giving it one more lick, before laying back down on her paws, though her head stays tucked up against his face.
 “Yeah. I missed you too, Nilas.” He mumbles, pain forgotten in the face of a happy dragon snuggling against him, a soothing, perfect weight that grounds him, helps him breathe a little easier against the stress slowly fading away. He rights the chair and slips back into it, taking the mug that she sets in front of him.
 “Roman still giving you trouble?” He asks, after a few moments in comfortable silence, taking a sip of the tea, which is deep and herbal, just a hint of sweetness from the honey. She scowls, and he can hear her tail sweeping across the floor.
 “Don’t get me started. I enjoy playing his games, but that boy has not given me a moments peace. Do you know how hard it is, to swap into evil enchantress mode, when your nemesis has showed up in the middle of you baking? I had a pie in the oven and I couldn’t stop worrying it was going to burn.”
 “did it?” he asks, grinning.
 “No. I told him he’d better stop wasting his time with me, and worry about my agents infiltrating the castle, and he took off. There weren’t any, of course, from what I understand he had a lovely game of whodunnit about the royal crown, though it turned out he’d simply misplaced it.” Virgil laughed, imagining Roman frantically running around, accusing random townspeople, making one of those red string conspiracy cork boards, only to find it under his bed.
 “Oh, that’s amazing.” He finally wheezes through his giggling, taking another long sip of his tea, before yawning hugely.
 “alright, enough catching up. To bed with you.”
 “but-"
 “uh, uh, uh, you know the drill. You’ll be falling out of the chair soon, anyway.” She teases gently, helping support him as he stands, a bit wobbly on his feet, another yawn impossible to stifle sneaking through.
 “Curse my traitorous body.” He mutters, making her laugh, as he lays down on the cot in the dark corner of the living room, pulling all the fluffy blankets up so high they nearly cover his head, Nilas circling a few times, before curling up snuggled against his chest, kneading her paws contentedly.
 “sweet dreams, tiny terror.” She murmurs, kissing his forehead fondly, as his eyes flutter shut. “sleep well. You could use it.”
 “mhm. Thanks, Tabitha. Love you.” He mumbles, drifting off, a small smile on his lips as he rests his head against Nilas.
 She smiles, stroking his hair a few more times before pulling away, a low sigh slipping from her lips.
 Well. No doubt Remus would appear soon, and he could explain what had sent Virgil into such a tizzy, though no doubt it was something to do with the others. He wouldn’t have been so scared of himself, otherwise. He was never scared of himself, until he started hanging around them. He used to revel in causing mayhem, tearing through the imagination, scrapping with Remus, winning, more often than not, on his own merit. He was such a small little shadow, but so fierce, with those eyes of his, peeking guardedly through his mop of hair, an almost perpetual frown on his face, always braced for the worst.
 But he was kind, too. The first day she'd come across him alone, he’d glared at her, hissed, baring his fangs and scuttling backwards, ready to bite.
 She’d knelt down, almost as surprised to see him as he clearly was to see her.
 “hello, little one. What are you doing, out here alone?” He hadn’t answered, merely continued to glare, tensed to spring or run. She’d hummed, looking around, the field was full of knee high grass, his head barely poking above the stalks, wildflowers filling the space, butterflies (both literal and figurative) drifting through the air. A distant shout rang through the imagination, an echo of whatever turmoil was occurring up in the rest of the mind, and he flinched, curling in on himself, breath catching.
 “ah. Trying to find some quiet, until the storm blows over.” The little shadow nodded, watching a bee struggle to stay atop a flower blowing in the breeze, before reaching out and holding it steady, a small smile crossing his face as he leaned in, watching the bee burry its head in the pollen. “Well, don’t mind me, then. Is it alright, if I stay here to read? I won’t bother you.” A moment passed, but he nodded solemnly, watching the bee flit away, before fixing his gaze on her, which she studiously ignored, studying her book while watching out of the corner of her eye.
 Another echoing shout, almost like a thunder crash, and he let out a little shriek. Before she could ask if he was okay, the little shadow had scuttled closer, throwing himself onto her lap and curled in a shivering ball, hiding himself under her cloak.
 “Oh, darling, it’s alright. They won’t hurt you here, I promise.” He hadn’t uncurled, and she’d hesitantly wrapped an arm around him, brushing through his hair with her other hand, humming softly, until she felt him slowly start to uncurl, realizing finally he’d fallen asleep, tiny hands clutching at her shirt, impossible to pry off even if she’d wanted to.
 When Creativity and Deceit panicked later, realizing Anxiety had been missing all day, they were surprised to find him happily coloring on the floor of the witch’s cottage, dark aura dispersed enough they could actually see his body, a dragon curled around him protectively.
 The next day he’d shown back up on her doorstep, a bit shyer, but no less brave, holding out a flower crown, painstakingly woven with colorful flowers, and it may have been the sweetest thing anyone had ever done for her. From then on, Anxiety, or Virgil, now, was as good as hers, under her protection, always welcome, always at home in her home. Her baby, her shadow, her tiny terror.
Virgil
“What happened to his parents?”
Even though they were quiet, Virgil could hear the whispers of the king and the men who had brought him here. He could not stop himself from sniffling, freezing when everyone turned to him.
“I’m sorry, I -”
The king walked over to him, a look on his face that Virgil did not recognize. “There is no need to be sorry, young one. I have a son about your age, did you want to meet him?”
“Okay.”
The king held out his hand, not letting go once Virgil was on his feet. They moved through the castle with ease, the men falling into step behind the two of them. The king nodded at a few people as they passed, but no one stopped them.
After a few minutes, the king knocked on a door. “Patton?”
The door swung open, revealing a boy a little shorter than Virgil. A huge smile graced his face as he saw another boy, but it fell instantly. “How come you were crying?”
Virgil could not help it as the tears began to flow once more. As soon as they started, a set of small arms wrapped around him.
“I have some stories I can read to you, but only if you want to.”
Knowing he would not be able to speak, Virgil merely nodded, being dragged into the room a second later.
As he grew older, he understood what had happened. He was a ward of the king, someone that Thomas had seen and essentially adopted without a second thought. Thomas refused to tell him what had happened to his parents until he was old enough to process everything.
Unable to find a proper way to thank the king, Virgil asked to be trained to become a knight. The men who had brought him to the castle gave him lessons, and he earned the title of page fairly easily.
In the meantime, Virgil shared educational lessons with Patton. The two of them became close after that first night, separating for lessons only when they absolutely had to. When they were ten and Patton called Virgil his best friend, it had shocked him so much that he had burst into tears.
As he grew up, the knights noticed that Virgil had some of the fastest reflexes they had ever seen. On his 15th birthday, he was promoted to squire, and began some more hardcore training with the knights.
He was currently in the practice area with Sir Toby, who had agreed to a sparring match. Sir Theobold and Patton sat in the stands - one in case of an emergency and one to cheer Virgil on.
“Hold on, fix your stance.”
Looking down, Virgil shifted his feet, before flexing his grip on the wooden sword he’d been given.
“Begin.”
Virgil dashed forward, knowing it was to his advantage to be up close to Sir Toby. He was tall and had reach - something Virgil lacked.
Sir Toby attempted to use this reach to block Virgil, but the squire simply ducked out of the way, popping up in Sir Toby’s face.
“Yay, Virge!”
It was a hard fought battle. Virgil used all of his training and knowledge of Toby’s weaknesses, but in the end, Sir Toby’s experience won out. Virgil found himself on his back, the tip of the wooden sword at his throat.
“I yield.”
“Very good, Virgil.” Sir Toby tossed the sword away, helping him up. “A knight must know when the fight is lost, lest he get himself killed.”
“Caution over recklessness.” Virgil answered, earning a smile from the knight.
The door to the practice area opened, and another boy stepped out. He adjusted his glasses as he hurried up to Sir Toby, a scroll in his hand.
“The king wishes to see both you and Sir Theobold.”
“Thank you, Logan.”
The knights headed off, leaving the three boys alone.
“You certainly do not look like a messenger.” Virgil said as he took in Logan’s appearance. “You wear a similar color, yet you wear robes.”
“I am no messenger, but I offered to bring the scroll out regardless.” He said, bowing to both Virgil and Prince Patton. “The robes signify my ability to use magic.”
“Magic?!” Patton squealed, stumbling out of his seat and running up to them. “Can you show us?”
“Anything for the crown prince.”
Patton giggled, practically vibrating where he stood. Virgil felt a surge of jealousy wash over him, but he could not pinpoint why.
Logan said a quick chant, before waving a hand in front of his face. His eyes changed in an instant, glowing a bright silver. The spell faded a moment later.
“Unfortunately, I am still an apprentice, but my master says that I am a quick learner and can make master rank by the time the snow falls.”
Virgil tensed as Logan turned to him. “I had heard that you were the best squire being trained at the moment. Is that true?”
“I would not say the best -”
“Virgil, stop being down about yourself!” Patton cut him off, brows furrowed and hands on his hips. “You are the best squire being trained right now.”
The corner of Logan’s mouth quirked up. “If that is the case, I have a proposal to run by you.”
Virgil could feel himself sliding into a defensive stance as he looked at the mage. “What is this proposal?”
“From my research, knights are trained to fight against other men. To fight in a war, should one occur.” Logan’s eyes brightened as he spoke. “My master says that more wars have been using mages to their advantage, which is something knights are not trained for. I propose that we have the occasional practice duel between us, so that you may learn how to train against magic, and I may learn to defend myself from physical attacks.”
“I accept your proposal.”
Soon enough, Logan had joined Virgil and Patton’s group. Patton had assured him that they were still best friends, but that was not what Virgil was worried about.
He had come to realize that his jealousy of Logan was because he had a crush on Patton.
Virgil’s black cloak swished around him as he paced in his chambers. Should he tell the king? Surely that was a terrible idea, the king would send him somewhere else so that he would not be distracted by his duties.
The very thought of being sent far away from Patton made Virgil dizzy. He sat on the floor, trying to steady his breaths.
He heard his door creak open, but he had to close his eyes as everything became too much. There was some shouting, but Virgil could not pinpoint the voice.
It could have been minutes or it could have been hours before Virgil felt a familiar pressure on his hands and heard a familiar voice.
“Virgil, breathe. I am going to squeeze your hands, and I want you to breathe as I count, alright?”
Once his breathing was steady, Virgil opened his eyes to find Patton in front of him, looking more than a little concerned. “What happened, Vee?”
“I do not know.”
“It must have been a curse.” Sir Toby said from the door. “We were unable to shake you from your stupor.”
“There was no curse here.” Logan knelt at Virgil’s side from where he had been standing, making Virgil jump. He waved a hand, the dark blue magic washing over Virgil. “This was a natural reaction. I have seen it before, but never at this magnitude. Tell me, Virgil, what caused such a reaction? Did something happen?”
Virgil did his best to keep his reddening cheeks hidden. “No, I was - I was thinking about if I was ever sent away from here and - it just happened.”
“You will never be sent away.” Patton’s voice was thick, and there were tears shining in his eyes. “If Father sent you away, I would go with you. I would run away.”
“Perhaps making plans to run away in front of your father’s guards is not the best idea.” There was a small smile on Logan’s face, before he turned to Virgil. “I can make a potion that should calm the effects of your condition, but I cannot guarantee that all the symptoms will disappear.”
“Thank you, Logan.”
After a fortnight, Logan delivered the potion, and continued to do so whenever Virgil was low.
Months later, hours after Patton’s 16th birthday ball, Virgil found himself in the kitchen. Patton was talking to a servant boy, a huge smile on both of their faces. The jealousy washed over Virgil again, and before he could blink he was at Patton’s side.
“Sir Virgil,” he said, holding out a hand. “I do not believe we have been introduced.”
“Oh, my name is Roman.” The servant said, shaking Virgil’s hand before giving a small bow. “It is truly an honor to meet both the prince and the favored squire in one night.”
Blood flowed to Virgil’s cheeks at the unexpected compliment. “Ah - thank you.”
“I had been hoping to come see some of your sparring, but I have been stuck on kitchen duty since we arrived.” Roman used wide gestures as he spoke, nearly hitting Virgil in the shoulder. He pointed to a batch of beignets. “I made those actually.”
“You did?!” Patton practically shrieked. “Those were my favorite!”
“They were, he had around six of them.”
Virgil could not help but laugh as Patton feigned pouting. “It was only five.”
“Well, if you come visit me more often, I promise to have a batch of those ready at all times.”
After that night, three friends became four. It took a little while before Virgil and Logan completely warmed up to Roman, as he was not a fan of his job while they were more than devoted, but eventually the four of them were friendly enough with each other.
Virgil did not see Roman often, given his duties, but when he did he always gave the servant a friendly nod.
It seemed as though time flew by before Virgil was 17, kneeling in front of the king, swearing his oath of knighthood.
He felt the sword tap each shoulder before King Thomas asked him to stand.
“Now, for your assignment.” He said, a glimmer in his eye. “You are to be Prince Patton’s personal guard. Do not leave his side unless he or I command you to do so.”
Virgil struggled to keep his arms at his sides instead of throwing them around the king in a hug. The ceremony continued for only a few minutes more before everyone was excused from the throne room.
As the final servant left, excluding Roman, King Thomas walked up to Virgil and pulled him close.
“I could think of no better knight for the job than you.”
Once the king had let him go, Virgil found himself with an armful of Patton. “Vee, this is perfect! Best friends stick together, forever!”
“Forever.” Virgil agreed, his eyes darting down to Patton’s lips for a moment before he caught himself.
Virgil did his new job diligently, only leaving Patton’s side when necessary.
The first time he left Patton’s side on his own accord was when he saw the poster advertising a contest for Patton’s hand. His vision was very nearly tinted red as he tore the poster off the board.
“Patton, I am afraid we must head back to the castle. I had forgotten that I needed a word with the king.”
“Aw, Vee, we just got here.”
Sir Janus, the extra knight that had been sent with them, raised an eyebrow at Virgil before turning to Patton. “A word with the king is something that cannot wait. However, if it suits the two of you, I would be able to keep the Prince safe in town. Sir Virgil could have his audience, and you, Prince Patton, would be able to continue to shop.”
Patton looked to Virgil. “I am not opposed to this plan, but you are my guard. This decision is yours to make.”
“Sir Janus is more than competent, he will keep you safe.” Virgil said, his tone sending a threat to the knight. “I will return as soon as possible.”
The conversation with the king went swimmingly, as did the contest. Virgil was thankful that Patton had chosen him, as well as Logan and Roman. The four of them shared something that no one else had.
Virgil pulled back from the hug he had been pulled into, clearing his throat.
“Patton has confessed his love for you all. I am not in love with you, Logan, or you, Roman, but I am in love with Patton. If he wants the three of us, I can learn to share.”
Colorful Flames
A Caleb Widogast x Jester Lavorre fic
with a little bit of Shadowgast sprinkled in
Caleb struggles with his past and the relationships he's making in the present. A kind of sequel to MintoKitsune's "All I Need is Your Light."
warnings: angst, general Caleb feelings
word count: 2.3k
Spoilers up to c2ep103
Caleb was sure his feelings for the blue tiefling girl would go away. He was certain that they had only appeared because she reminded him so much of a girl he once knew. And there were some nights when he felt like those feelings weren’t there anymore. Nights when he was pouring over a spell book, and he’d look up quickly to see a certain drow sitting on the other side of the table from him. The drow’s white hair falling in front of his face, a face so deep in concentration he didn’t even notice that Caleb was staring.
Caleb’s feelings for Jester seemed to linger with him everywhere he went, but sometimes the blue tiefling and the purple drow would mix together in his head, and all he could see was a beautiful new color. A color Caleb was sure he only saw in his most wonderful dreams. They were complete opposites, Jester and Essek, but somehow Caleb was unwillingly attracted to both with the same amount of passion he once felt for a girl when he was just 15.
There was one thing that Caleb knew to be the absolute truth, and that was that Essek was his best chance of becoming a better wizard. Essek, with his wonderful towers in the middle of Rosohna, his seemingly endless patience when it came to helping the Mighty Nein, and, honestly, Caleb’s true counterpart on this side of Wildemount.
Essek, the prodigy. Essek, who betrayed his home country. Essek, the true cause of the war they just spent months putting a stop to.
Caleb had never felt more conflicted in his life. He saw himself in every bit of Essek, and these new revelations didn’t change that view point. Still, Caleb was sure he would never betray his own home for personal gain. Caleb stated that as a fact, though it didn’t feel like one when he said it. Caleb would do anything to destroy the monster who ruined his life and family, and that was purely personal.
As he sat in the sand on a beach on Rumblecusp, preparing their sleeping quarters for the night, he heard Jester sit down in a huff a few feet away from him. Her back was to him, but he could hear her talking to an unseen entity. He tried hard not to listen in on their conversation, but his ears still picked up bits and pieces. She was trying not to cry; he could hear that in her voice. She looked up at the moon and suddenly her conversation stopped.
“You okay over there?” he asked, gaining Jester’s attention.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” she said, wiping tears from her eyes. “I’m just drawing.” She quickly picked up her pencil and pretended to draw in her journal.
Why did she feel the need to lie to him? At this point, they all knew what the Traveler was like. They all knew that this was an elaborate trick, and her god didn’t really care that much.
“Didn’t go as well as you were hoping?” Caleb asked, hoping to get more information out of her.
She was hesitant, but answered anyway. “In some ways it went better. But no.” Jester let out a sigh, and Caleb could swear that he could read all her emotions right then and there.
“I can’t speak for him,” Caleb said, “but you do have us. So whatever you land on, Jester, we’ll make it happen.”
Her eyes were still filled with tears, and it was difficult for her to get words out. “I have to figure out what I want to land on.”
“Maybe we sleep on it, it’ll make more sense in the morning,” Caleb suggested. It had been a long day, and Caleb was exhausted. To be fair, he was exhausted every day, but this island did things to him that he did not like.
“Yeah,” Jester said, wiping the last of her tears from her eyes. “Thank you, Caleb.”
“I didn’t do anything,” Caleb said in a voice so quiet, he wasn’t sure she even heard him.
He was slowly learning that Jester was so much more than that initial impression he got from her. When they first met, over a year ago, Caleb was sure that she was just another annoying person in his life, but he was willing to deal with it if this group could help him and Nott find solace in their lives. Now he knew more about Jester than he ever thought he would.
Jester had character, and was far more than just another bubbly personality. Though a person would never know, unless they got to know her like the Nein did, Jester hadn’t had the best life. Caleb grew up with a loving mother and father, and they gave him everything he needed in life for 15 years. He knew that both of his parents loved him, and they allowed him to go out and experience the world.
Marion loved Jester more than anything in this world, but she still sheltered her daughter. Jester’s only friend was a fake god who mostly used her for his own personal gain. A friend who made her cry because he wouldn’t tell her the truth. Jester’s father left, and it took him over 20 years to even acknowledge that she existed.
Jester was more than the pale blue flame that Caleb could see illuminating her when he was at his darkest. Jester didn’t exist just to light other people’s paths. Caleb knew this flame flickered out from time to time, as he saw just moments ago as she cried into her sketchbook. Jester’s flame was for herself, and her friends were there to help kindle her fire. The Nein were here to help each other. Tonight, Caleb was sure he would help his friends with the ridiculous problem this island gave them.
Caleb and Veth sat side by side under the dome, pale amber figures dancing around them.
“With just a little bit of jade?” Veth asked as she watched a version of her and Yeza looking down at their newborn son.
Caleb nodded. “We have learned a lot.”
The rest of the group joined them, and they all sat in awe as the amber menagerie of memories swirled between them. Caleb was hoping more than anything that this beautiful display of memories, of their life together, would help them remember who they are. For the first time in a while, Caleb fell asleep with only happy memories circling in his head.
The redhead stirred in his sleep, unable to find peace even in this state of unconsciousness. His mind raced with memories of a life he once knew. Astrid and Eadwulf in their youth, laughing with him as they studied in the library at the academy. Him and Astrid sneaking around together, hoping their mentor wouldn’t find out. The wonderful faces of his mother and father. He dreamed of a garden he helped plant once, just outside the small house he grew up in.
Bren was standing in the garden, looking up at the night sky above him when he heard his mother call for him. Suddenly he felt an immense heat on his back, and he turned around to see flames. His mother was standing in the doorway of their house, orange flames nearly enveloping her.
“Bren,” she whispered.
“Mother, I am so sorry.” His voice sounded almost foreign to him. He took a few steps towards her, reaching out a hand to help her out of the flames.
She took a step back into the house, the flames fully engulfing her. She disappeared, and the flames burned hotter and brighter, causing Bren to take a step back and cover his face with his arm. When he moved his arm away, his childhood house was gone, but the flames remained, only they were red this time.
A female figure appeared in the center of them. She walked forward, her facial features becoming clearer. She looked just as she did the day he first met her.
“Astrid,” Bren breathed out, “let me help you before you burn yourself.”
She looked at him, her face cold and unfeeling. “Oh, Bren, only you could burn me bad enough to hurt.” She turned her head, and there on her neck was the burn that he knew he left.
He could feel the tears starting to form in his eyes, and he tried his best to keep them from falling. He reached up to rub them away, and when he opened his eyes again Astrid was gone. The flames had changed from red to purple. He knew what was coming.
“Essek!” Caleb called out, searching the flames for any sign of the drow. “Essek?”
“Caleb,” a voice said from behind Caleb. He turned around to see that the flames had completely surrounded him now. Essek stood only a few feet away, the flames just barely reaching his cloak. “There’s no helping me now. I did what I had to do to learn more about the luxon. I accept what this made me.”
“We can help you, Essek,” Caleb said, taking a step forward and putting a hand on Essek’s shoulder. “You are not lost.”
“I appreciate your kindness, Caleb.” Essek reached up and took Caleb’s hand off his shoulder and brought it up to his mouth. He kissed his knuckles softly before letting go. Caleb let his hand drop to his waist as he watched Essek back up into the flames and disappear.
Suddenly the flames dropped and Caleb was left in complete darkness. He was sure the dream had ended and he was just laying under the dome with his eyes closed, but when he tried to open them nothing happened.
He felt an arm rest on his back from behind, like someone was trying to read over his shoulder.
“What’re you reading, Caleb?” The voice was unmistakably Jester’s. The room lit up in a soft blue glow.
Caleb looked down at the book that was now in his hands. There was nothing written on the page. He flipped the page, and the next page was also blank. He looked over his shoulder at Jester, who was staring down at the book still.
“Uhhh,” Caleb started, trying to think about what to say. “Just a book about the history of Rexxentrum. It’s all in Zemniam though.”
“Boring,” Jester said with a sigh. “Do you ever read anything interesting?”
“No,” was all Caleb answered. Jester moved to be in front of him.
“Caleb?” Jester said, causing him to look up at her.
“Ja?”
The soft blue glow that lit the room started to become more intense. Caleb could see the flames out of the corners of his eyes as he stared at Jester.
“Would you ever betray us, Caleb?” Jester asked. Her gaze never left his. Her pink eyes shifted between his, looking for any sort of emotional response.
Caleb was stunned for only a second before his eyes quickly averted hers. He looked back down at the blank pages of his book.
“Never intentionally,” he mumbled. He could feel her eyes still on him.
“Even if Astrid offered you everything you wanted in life to rejoin their side?”
“I could never work for Trent again.”
“What about Essek?” Jester asked.
Caleb looked up at her briefly. The flames had gotten significantly closer to them, the bright light illuminating her face. “What about him?”
“He’s taught you a lot in the past few months. Would you betray us to learn everything you could from him?”
Caleb shook his head. “I don’t think Essek would ever truly be against us. He believes in knowledge, and so do I.”
“That sounds like a yes,” Jester said. Caleb wasn’t sure what to say to that. Jester backed up into the flames.
“What about you, Jester?” Caleb asked. She tilted her head, confused. “You’re being consumed by The Traveler. Would you betray us for him?”
“I love him only second to my mother,” Jester said, the flames dancing around her hair.
“Now, that sounds like a yes,” Caleb said. He finally closed his book and focused all his attention on Jester. She looked beautiful in the blue light, but Caleb knew the fire was consuming her, and she would be gone soon. “Don’t let his ideals consume you, Jester. He is not everything. You have your friends too.”
“Thank you, Caleb,” Jester said as the fire fully consumed her, her voice fading out.
“I didn’t do anything,” Caleb said, repeating the end of the conversation they had earlier that night.
He was tired. More tired than he thought you should be able to feel in a dream. Sleep sounded amazing. He put the book on the floor and layed down, using it as a pillow. As soon as he closed his eyes they were open again. This time he was staring at the roof of the dome. He let out a sigh and looked around at his friends. Vilya stared back at him. He sat up to talk to her.
“Bad dream?” she asked him.
“Just a weird one,” he told her.
“You know you mumble in your sleep,” she said. He stayed silent. “You said her name.” She gestured over at Jester.
“Ja,” he sighed. “She’s going through a lot right now.”
“Aren’t we all,” Vilya said with a light chuckle.
“We wouldn’t be here without her.”
“She means a lot to you, I can tell.” Vilya said. She could see Caleb tense at those words. “To all of you.”
Caleb just nodded his head.
“If it means anything,” Vilya whispered, “I know what it feels like to long for a loved one.”
“But you know yours love you back,” Caleb told her.
“I see how she looks at you,” Vilya said. Their conversation ended with that, as Caleb wasn’t sure what to say anymore.
Caleb sat in silence for almost an hour before he realized that he had just said aloud that he loved Jester. It hadn’t been exact wording, but the word “love” was in there. That scared Caleb more than the peculiar dream he had just had. Caleb’s emotions had always been a huge puzzle, even to himself, but just admitting that one thing was enough to keep him up the rest of the night.
