Eris Week '24 Day 6: AU/Retellings
On day 6 of @erisweekofficial I'm choosing to fulfill a both prompts together with the first book of "The Song of Azris".
The epic begins. In Book I: The Promise, we learn of Azriel's past and the fateful day in Sparta that would once again bring these men together again in Troy.
Referring to each chapter as a book is also a nod to Homer's style, and the way he outlined both The Iliad and The Odyssey.
Be sure to read the "Catalogue of Characters" and "Ode to the Muses" before you get started. TW/CW for Book I include fire, burns, death, parental abuse of a child.
Read a snippet of Book I below, or find the whole book on AO3.
The days in the training field had been hard, and Azriel’s hands were sore from holding the metal sword thrust upon him. He was only twelve- he shouldn’t have been a full-size sword yet- but his father had commanded it. No one refused King Menoetius, especially not his youngest son. Menoetius decided Azriel had to be good for something. He was much younger than his brothers and would never be a king in his own right. So, he was to be a soldier. The best soldier, meant to protect his brothers’ backs as they were trained to take his father’s throne. He’d passed by the beach, looking for where his mother and sister would play skipping stones. Not finding them there, Azriel approached the small house where Phoibe would hide from their brothers. She told Azriel she was safe there - no one could touch her. But the bruises he so often found on her arms indicated otherwise. As the eldest, she should have been first in line for the throne- would have been if not for the misfortune of being born a girl. Their mother was sickly, unable to care for Azriel as a child, and Phoibe had practically raised him. Some of his best memories were of just the two of them, playing together, laughing, separate and safe from the others. Kicking dust as he made his way toward the cottage, deep in thought, Azriel watched the sun as it dipped below the horizon, sending tendrils of light like flame across the sky. The screams broke him from his reverie, spurring him into a run. His legs ached, muscles screaming as he pushed them once again after breaking himself in training from sunup to sundown. Cresting the hill’s horizon, Azriel took in the cottage, the tendrils of flames licking the room, caressing the sun's dying rays.
Keep reading here on AO3!

Ancient Greece/Alexander the Great
So, yesterday, I posted about clegan in Rome, now it's time for Clegan in Greece.
A little backstory before I get into the idea: Alexander the Great was a bit of a conquerer, and a smart one at that. He married I think two women for political reasons, and according to some, might have been in love with one of his generals, whose death may have lead to Alexander's own. (One of the reasons for his death was poisoning, and I think my early western civ teacher said it might have been alcohol poisoning)
Again, like the one for Rome, there are two ways I can see this going:
Bucky is the Alexander the Great stand in, and wherever Gale is set to be from (real or fake), is his next target. Much like irl King Darius III, Gale's father, the ruler of this real/fake place, leads his army into battle (with his family watching) then sees that he's losing, and flees, leaving his army and family behind. And much like Alexander the Great did, when Bucky takes what's left of the Royal family (Gale and his mother, and maybe also Marge) with him and his army, treating them with great respect. Bucky takes note of Gale's hesitance to trust him, so he arranges it so that Gale is the one who brings him his food. After some time, Gale asks why, and Bucky says something along the lines of "So that if you and your family wanted to leave, you could easily poison me and escape." Something in that level of trust does something to Gale, as he knows that his dad doesn't have this level of trust with any member of his family. They eventually grow close, and for what Bucky says to be political reasons to his soldiers, but Gale knows the real reason why, he says that he and Gale are to be married. And maybe they have a Romeo and Juliet ending, with Bucky dying of poisoning, assassination, or a number of infectious diseases (Like Alexander the Great did) and when Gale finds Bucky dead, he isn't long after him.
Gale is the Alexander the Great stand in and Bucky is the Hephaestion stand in. Like Hephaestion, Bucky is Gale's bodyguard and one of his generals. They start out as friends, Gale specifically picking Bucky as his body guard because he was the only one who was brave enough to talk back to him or something. Then it grows into something else when they start expanding Greece. It happens one night in Gale's tent. The next day/night, they'll be fighting with another country, and they don't know how it will end. Bucky is the first one to make a move, and Gale is the one who tops. It actually takes Gale awhile to convince Bucky to top him, mostly due to the views of being a bottom in ancient Greece, which I may accidentally be making up about ancient greece. For political reasons, Gale marries Marge so that when he eventually defeats her father for good, he has more of a claim over where she's from. She is already pregnant when they get married, as she's in love with someone, and Gale says he'll claim the child to avoid scandal, and he'll order her lover to be her guard or something. Then, somewhere near the end of the expansion, Bucky gets killed in action, dying in Gale's arms. Gale ends up winning the battle, and wanting to do more, but his troops want to go home. So, at the party celebrating a successful expansion and the returning to Greece, Gale drinks for the first time in his life. He drinks and drinks and drinks. He drinks more than his troops, more than Bucky ever did. Marge is concerned for him, but he pushes her off, says some mean things, try to apologize, then keeps drinking and starts crying. That's what ends up killing him.

So how does spartan Pyrrha feel about medusa Cinder?
Pyrrha watched Cinder carefully as she went through her day trying to put the statues of her victims back together. It was unlike anything she had seen, though, finding out about her being a huntress of Artemis before becoming a monster wasnt exactly what she had expected of her either. Monsters were supposed to be their own breed of creature, created by the old magics that still washed over the lands, not humans punished by the gods. And yet, here she was staring at proof that some monsters were created by the gods out of jealousy.
“Can you do more than watch me all day?” Cinder asked as she finished piecing together another statue, sealing the cracks with a small incantation she learned years ago. “Not that I mind the staring, but I’m sure you’d prefer doing something that isnt just watching me work.”
“I can help-”
“I was the one who turned them to stone, its my job to keep them safe until there’s a way to bring them back. That includes putting them back together when they break.”
Pyrrha sighed and walked over to the piles of stone that Cinder had made, each piece organized into a separate pile at each base the statues had been sitting on. Then, she walked around the statue that had been fixed, surprised that the pose almost looked like she wanted to embrace Cinder rather than cower like the rest of the statues. “Who was she?”
Cinder pulled her hand away from the statue and slipped her blindfold over her eyes. “She’s the reason I was expelled from the huntresses to begin with. A mistake that I’d never change no matter how many times I could be offered to. And, she’s the reason I became a gorgon.”
“I’m not sure I understand. She’s a human, right?”
“She is.” Cinder sat down and slipped the blindfold off her eyes for a brief moment to stare at the statue with her own eyes. “And like me, she was a huntress. My… rival for a lack of a better term. No matter what weapon she was given, she would always get Artemis’ favor. The best of us, a thorn in my side, always getting in my way. And yet, I couldnt help but fall in love with her.”
Pyrrha looked over at Cinder and watched how the light seemed to glisten off her amber eyes before Cinder pulled the blindfold over her eyes again. She looked back at the statue and sat down next to Cinder. “What was her name?”
“Ruby. After a brutal hunt, we spent some time alone, sparring just like all huntresses do. As each match went on, I started to get more and more frustrated with her until she pinned me to the ground. I still remember the way the moonlight reflected off her eyes, the gift that Artemis had bestowed to her, and the way it seemed to bring a… a sense of calm to me.”
Pyrrha noted the small smile that started to cross Cinder’s lips as a tear ran down her cheek. “And that’s when you were expelled, right?”
Cinder nodded and wiped the tear away from her cheek. “Huntresses arent supposed to fall in love, we’re supposed to give ourselves completely to Artemis. We spent the moment together, alone in a spring and sleeping under the stars. The next morning, we were both expelled from the hunt and stripped of our protections that Artemis gave us. However, she showed mercy to us and allowed for Ruby to keep the gift that she had been given. After that, we built a home together outside of Athens.”
“Then what happened?” Pyrrha asked, genuine curiosity leaving her lips. She paused for a moment when she realized how quickly she had asked, clearing her throat and looking away from Cinder. “I-I mean, that explains how you were expelled, but it doesnt explain why you’re a gorgon. It doesnt seem like Artemis cursed you.”
Cinder nodded and stood up to make her way to the next statue pile and started to piece together another broken statue. “That’s because it wasnt her. What I didnt know was that another goddess had Ruby in her eyes. Salem, the goddess of chaos. I’m still not sure if it was our of jealousy, or if she had other plans for her, but Salem came to me and offered me a choice: I could leave Ruby and live out a peaceful life, or I could stay with Ruby and become a living weapon she’d use against humanity and the gods.”
Pyrrha watched as Cinder slowly placed a piece of stone and sealed the cracks, listening to her voice break as she spoke. For a moment, all Pyrrha wanted to do was hug Cinder, to try to tell her that everything would be okay, but as another tear ran down Cinder’s cheek, she pulled back as she watched the hair start to turn into snakes. She kept her distance and sighed. “So, you were tricked.”
“No, not tricked,” Cinder answered. “Punished. At the time, I had wanted to do whatever I could to stay with Ruby, so I accepted Salem’s offer and became her weapon. One that she’d use on her own terms. At first, I thought that meant being called upon by her to fight the heroes that the other gods would throw at her. Instead, being a “living weapon” was meant to be a punishment for daring to try to stay with someone that was off limits. I spent the night with Ruby and then… all I remember was feeling everything inside of me burn.”
Pyrrha went quiet and got up to help Cinder, gently taking her hand to help steady her as she tried to place another piece of the statue together. Even though Cinder’s eyes were covered, she kept her own gaze averted from Cinder’s eyes, helping guide her to keep the statues from getting damaged further.
Cinder placed the stone she held and then wiped the tears from underneath her blindfold. “She held me until my transformation was complete. I felt… cold and empty, but having her arms around me still helped me feel a bit of warmth. Then, I looked up and stared at her eyes and then… well…” she motioned to the statue next to them.
“She turned to stone.” Pyrrha looked at the statue of Ruby once more, noticing more faded paint on the stone as if Cinder had tried to give her color once more. Silver for her eyes, red on her dress, black for her hair and a pink on her lips. All in an attempt to make the statue seem more like who she used to be. “And the others here?”
“Accidental victims.” Cinder looked at the pile of stones in front of her. “This one was a warrior sent to kill me, like you. He caught me by surprise and managed to give me a nasty scar on my side. “But then, he made the mistake of looking in my eyes.”
“You… you didnt want to turn him to stone, did you?”
Cinder shook her head and steadied herself with a deep breath. “I wanted to be left alone with Ruby until I could find a way to bring her back to normal. Instead, more people came and I became the weapon that Salem wanted me to be. Warriors and heroes have been coming at me for years, a few travelers have stopped only to get frozen in stone as well. This… place was supposed to be a sanctuary for me when I first arrived with Ruby, a place for me to quietly find a cure to all of this. I-I couldnt stay at the home she and I built.”
Pyrrha sat down and growled at herself under her breath when she realized she couldnt not help Cinder. Sure, she was spartan and Cinder was a gorgon, but her life belonged to Mercury and she couldnt sit around if someone was cursed. “I… I think I know someone that can help. I’ll have to go back to Sparta, but… I know a disciple of Mercury that might be able to cure you.”
“You do?!” Cinder asked as she took Pyrrha’s hands. “I’ll do anything if it means getting rid of this curse!”
Pyrrha looked away from Cinder to keep from looking at her eyes, and to hide the small blush that crossed her cheeks. She couldnt help but catch the small scales along Cinder’s cheek, or how warm and soft her hands felt even after working with cold stone for hours. She slowly pulled away, her voice breaking a bit as she spoke. “Y-yes, I’m fairly sure he can. And if he cant, then as a spartan, I’ll give up my weapon.”
“I’ll make sure you have a warm meal before you leave.”
“Thank you,” Pyrrha said quietly as she watched Cinder walk off. The blush on her cheeks deepend as she watched her, her heart pounding in her chest as she gripped the shaft of her spear. “Its just nerves about seeing Jaune again, that’s all,” she said to herself. “I help Cinder, and then I go home. That’s all it is.”

ancient greek/trojan war reincarnation au
After he'd torn his hair, beat his breast, and screamed his voice hoarse, Akhilleus was done living. He was alive, yes, and he would be until someone killed him, but he was done living. Patroklos, his lifelong love and friend, was dead, taken away from him forever. And it was all his fault. So once he could find the strength to stand, he put on the armor his mother commissioned for him and clawed his way through Hektor's people until the prince, Patroklos's killer, showed himself. He avenged his love. Then he took his anger out on those marked as the enemy until Apollo's poisoned arrow granted him the death he so desperately craved.
Once he reached Elysium, he searched for Patroklos, who embraced him. The man was sad to know that Akhilleus had suffered, but happy to see him again. The two were glad to be together. But Akhilleus missed the land of the living. He told Odysseus as much when the man visited the Underworld for answers on his way home to Ithaca. There was no lyre to play, no sunlight to enjoy, and really nothing to look forward to. But there was the River Lethe, the River of Forgetfulness that could wipe a spirit's memories in preparation for their reincarnation. Patroklos proposed that he and Akhilleus be reborn, for another chance at life. Akhilleus agreed to the plan, but he needed to make sure that he'd see his love again--all of them.

September 9th, 2006
"My thanks, Lord Aidoneus. You are most generous," Pogue whispered in Ancient Greek, eyes closed as his body repaired itself and his mind wandered to days past.
"Huh?" Reid and Ty had just come back from the vending machine. With one of their friends off on a suicide mission and the other in a coma, it was hard to simply sit quietly. But what else was there to do, other than take a few minutes to collect their thoughts?
---
Two Years Later
It was a shy kiss, one much softer than the first he'd shared with Jayn months before and the (technically not-first) one he'd gladly accepted from Caleb. But the moment his lips connected with Cassia's, long-forgotten magic sparked in the minds of the four young lovers. Jayn and Caleb regarded each other, first with curiosity, then with surprise, fondness, and a firm hug.
"Patroklos," Deidamia-Jayn murmured, "It's so good to see you again." She pulled back, and Patroklos-Caleb rested his forehead on hers as he smiled.
"What became of your son?" he asked her, and she frowned.
"Little shit gave me to his slave, Helenus. Not that the man wasn't handsome or kind, but--seriously?" She huffed, then looked over at the man who had fathered her child and joined her spirit with his.
Akhilleus-Pogue held Briseis-Cassia close. She was shaking, crying quietly. "You...y-you died, you both did...left me with them," she sobbed, and he didn't know what to say. He'd never been the best at consoling people. And she was right: he and Patroklos were her lovers, not to mention the only men who cared about her in the Achaean army. Once they died, she had nothing, and could do nothing but leave Troy for an unfamiliar man and his unfamiliar home.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, pressing another kiss to her trembling lips. She looked up at him, holding his face in her hands. Somehow, she managed to smile.
"You raided my city and treated me like your queen in Troy. And then you made sure I'd never be alone again. At least you did that much," Briseis-Cassia said, trying to hide her pain and shock. She glanced over at Patroklos-Caleb right when Akhilleus-Pogue did. With a small gesture, she told Akhilleus-Pogue to go on ahead. He let her go and took in the sight of a living, unharmed Patroklos-Caleb, his Patroklos.
"You're an idiot," Akhilleus-Pogue muttered before he yanked his childhood friend into a passionate kiss. It was so strong, Patroklos-Caleb groaned into it, slipping his hand into the shorter boy's hair to keep him close. They snapped and shifted, movements and sounds becoming more erotic and sensual than angry and mournful by the second. Even when they were both hard, they refused to part, so they didn't notice the girls in their own lust until they had all found release.
"What did you do?" Deidamia-Jayn asked Akhilleus-Pogue, once the four of them had all caught their breath, "They told me to go to the Lethe before I could be judged. I thought I fucked up so badly that I had to start all over." They laughed.
"It was Caleb's idea--"
"You said you didn't like being dead."
"I didn't! But I didn't want to live without you, either," Akhilleus-Pogue pleaded, "Any of you." Deidamia-Jayn squeezed his hand and leaned into him, the way she usually did when either he or she got upset. He kissed the top of her head. "I saw Hermes going by, so I asked him to ask Hades for an audience. I dunno if Hades would've agreed if Persephone wasn't there...He said we'd have to wait, but he'd let us live again, just once. But we wouldn't remember each other until we kissed."
"Good thing Cass wore her sexy lip gloss for you." The four laughed.

Eris Week '24 Day 5: War/Adventure
On day 5 of @erisweekofficial I'm launching a new adventure set just before and during the Trojan War: "The Song of Azris" is an Ancient Greek Azris/Patrochilles AU using inspiration from The Iliad, The Song of Achilles, and Greek Religion & Lore, featuring Azriel as Patroclus and Eris as Achilles.
The Catalogue of Characters is a reference list of the characters that who up throughout the series, including Gods, Trojans, and Greeks. Here you will find important relationships, and the ancient character counterparts for the ACOTAR characters. The name is a nod to Book Two of The Iliad, in which Homer outlines the catalogue of ships that traveled from Greece.
Before Homer's poems, he would include an invocation to the muses. These poems acted as an indication that the writer was seeking inspiration from a higher power or source. My fic features one such invocation in my poem, "Ode to the Muses". Though it is not specifically stated, I am invoking Melpomene, the muse of tragedy, whose statue is part of the cover art.
This poem is mean to be a reflection on war, not just as it is in great epics and fantasy novels, but as it is in real life.
Sing me a song of a tale of two men A tale of pride and pain tightly interwoven Sing me a song of a tale of two boys Who once dreamed of love and other naieve joys Sing me a song of the heartache of war Families divided, bleeding to settle the score Sing me a song of the sacrifices spent And the boys who became men but never home went Sing me a song of the young maidens Who cried til tears dried only to be taken again Sing me a song of the horrors of death Only to show there’s beauty in the bereft Sing me a song of a tale of two men So that we may cry while we sing it again and again.
Read the full Catalogue of Characters on AO3 , or read the Ode again on AO3.
Stay tuned for Day 6 of Eris week when the epic begins with "Book 1: The Promise".
Special thanks to @alexandia03 for helping me correlate all of the characters, piece together the myths/legends, and for beta reading this fic.

Baelon vs. Nymeros battle live reaction...
Elaena: *smirking because of how skilled her betrothed is compared to the pipsqueak who freaks out at the sight of blood, and prolly wants him dead too so she can go home*
Viserys and Aemma: *gripping the edge of their seat, hyperventilating* Don't die, you idiotic child. Don't die.
Rhaenyra: *cannot look at the scene before her because Baelon is so pathetic while she thinks of Daemon*
Daemon: *watching from the distance with his army, laughing out loud because Baelon is so pathetic while he thinks of Rhaenyra*
I thought the war would go on for a year or two, maybe three 🤔 And I agree with nonnie, that shack is so convenient. No one will hear her 😏 I wonder when nsfw happens; is it during the war or after they left and get married?
🤣🤣🤣 Rhaenyra and Elaena just want their hot capable men, not some men who can't hold their swords properly.
Rhaenyra rolls her eyes all the time while Baelon fights. Ten years old boys fight better than her brother, and he is plan to be the leader 🙈
Daemon has the same thoughts, like a lot of people who see that fight and how Baelon retreats
Oh, that happens during the war of course 🔥
