Trailer park Steve AU part 61

cw: mentions of canonical minor character death
Chapter 14
It's twilight by the time they make their way to Rick's place — gnat clouds swarming, sun dipped low, Lover's Lake an inky smudge beyond the blur of passing pines. Steve’s not totally sure how they got here, this dusty service road that's more pothole than pavement; one minute he's bitching about doomed love and double VHS, the next he’s taking the scenic route to a drug den.
There were some important moments in between, he’s pretty sure.
He’s also pretty sure he blacked out somewhere around the moment the morning news reported that an-unidentified-Hawkins-student-who-very-well-could-be-Eddie-Munson was found dead in his fucking trailer.
Kinda difficult to resurface from that one.
Feels like his soul’s got swimmer’s ear.
Even hours later — after Dustin and Max burst into Family Video talking a mile a minute about how Eddie was alive and they needed to use the phones; after Ernie stupidly gave a reporter Steve’s name, swearing up and down on the TV that his neighbor Steve Harrington was an upstanding young man who would never do something like this; after they spent an agonizingly long afternoon lying low and taking backroads to avoid the cops because the cops probably suspect Steve of murder now, oh god—
“It’s this next right up ahead,” Max says from the back seat. There's a map spread over the bench between her and Dustin, and Steve blinks himself awake; gives her a nod in the rearview.
Beside her, Dustin’s munching on Twizzlers he stole from the store — window down, easy slouch, just way too chipper for the situation at hand. "So Steve," he says conversationally, "now that you're a fugitive, does that mean—?"
Steve cuts Robin a pleading look.
Robin reaches back and smacks the little twerp upside the head.
"Ow!" Dustin whines.
"Shut up, please," Robin smiles.
Max makes a sound like she's trying not to laugh and checks the map again. "Right here," she says, pointing. "After that weird tree stump."
They turn onto another road that could be generously described as paved, once, several decades ago, and eventually, the winding path lets out onto a slightly nicer street. Aging but cared for, Holland Road is a crowded row of little lake houses, trailers and shacks with manicured shrubs and chipped fence paint, weeds growing through the sidewalks beneath pristine American flags. Steve pulls into the driveway of #2121.
It looks abandoned. Dark inside and out, a truck parked on the curb that's likely been there for a while, its tires sagging in a mulch of old wet leaves. There’s an autumn wreath on the front door.
“You sure this is the place?” he asks as they climb out of the car.
Max sasses him for questioning her navigation skills, Dustin unsuccessfully tries to land a revenge slap on Robin — a move that earns him a retaliation wedgie and a wrestling match he was never gonna win — and Steve pops the trunk and feels a hundred years old. Feels every bit the exhausted dad trying to keep the family road trip together as he grabs his nail bat and slings his duffel over his shoulder.
"You planning to spend the night?" Dustin teases from Robin's armpit, still bent double where she's got him in a headlock.
"No, just-" he drops the bag at their feet with a grunt, “doesn’t hurt to be prepared.”
Dustin’s eyes bug out. “Is that a can of goddamn bear mace?”
“Keep your voice down!” Steve hisses.
“You keep your voice down!”
"Should I just go ahead and choke him out?" Robin offers.
Steve considers it for a second: knock 'em all out, stuff 'em back inside the car. Go do this shit quietly by himself.
He rolls his eyes and puts his hands on his hips.
"You're no fun," she pouts, but she lets Dustin go.
Dustin grabs flashlights and walkies out of the bag, passes them around the circle. They take a moment to steel themselves — huddled together in the dark, shoulders tense, the creepy house looming ahead. Sharp shadows stretch toward them. Croaking sounds creeping from the edges of the lake.
Robin puts her flashlight under her chin like she's about to tell a scary story. "Alright, kiddos," she says in a deep, ominous voice. "Let's go rescue Steve's ex."
Stunned silence in the sudden vacuum her words create. Steve lets out a tired sigh. Dustin’s jaw is on the curb.
“His WHAT?” Dustin shouts.
Oh, my god. “He’s not my ex."
Robin rolls her eyes and says ‘sure’ under her breath, and Max turns to Dustin, laughing. “You didn’t know they were a thing?”
“We’re not—” Steve tries again.
“What were you trying to get them back together for then?”
She seems genuinely curious. Dustin seems three seconds from spontaneous combustion. “What was I WHAT?!” he yelps, limbs everywhere. Reminds Steve of Eddie so bad it hurts.
“Okay,” Steve interrupts, clapping them both on the shoulder; drops his voice to a harsh whisper. “In case you two forgot, we’re here to rescue Eddie.”
“Who you’re dating.”
Dustin’s voice is small, disconnected, his gaze far away. Like he’s shellshocked.
“Jesus Christ.” Steve pinches the bridge of his nose. “I— Yes. No. It’s complicated.”
Max snorts at his answer, Dustin makes a series of faces like he's gonna need seven years to process, and Robin interrupts his crisis by waving her flashlight like a traffic guard, walking backward up the hill as she directs them toward the house.
“Why don’t we just go find him first?” she suggests, making a rainbow with her hands, flinging light through the grimy windows. “And then Stevie here can answer alllll your big gay questions.”
Steve glares at Robin. Dustin glares at him, narrowed eyes for a full ten seconds like 'yeah, you fucking better,' and then he takes off up the driveway hollering Eddie's name.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #11
March 22-29 2024
The Administration, with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in the lead responded to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Working with Governor Wes Moore and Mayor Brandon Scott (both Democrats) The Department of Transportation promises to clear the harbor and rebuild the bride. DoT has already released $60 million in emergency funds as a "down payment" and President Biden is expected to seek $1 billion from Congress.
Vice President Harris announced a number of actions and investments designed to improve the quality of life of the peoples of northern central America. driven by poverty, lack of economic opportunities, and out of control crime people in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras are taking great risks and trusting criminal human traffickers to try to reach the US. The Administration is working to improve conditions in the Northern Triangle so that is no longer necessary. Vice President Harris announced $1 billion dollars in new investments as part of the Central America Forward public-private partnership, since 2021 it has invested $5.2 billion in the region. Harris also announced $175 million dollars of direct aid from the US to Guatemala at a meeting with Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo.
The Department of Energy announced a $1.5 billion dollar loan to help restart the Palisades Nuclear Plant. This would mark the first time a nuclear power plant was brought back online after being decommissioned. The hope is keep the plant running till 2051, this 100% green power source is projected to prevent 111 million tons of CO2 emissions in its new life time, the same as taking 100,000 cars off the road. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer touted it as key for her state reaching its goal of 100% clean energy by 2040.
Vice President Harris launched a social media push to inform the public about the Biden-Harris Administration's SAVE Plan. The Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan was launched last year as part of President Biden's efforts to bring student loan forgiveness to millions of borrowers. Currently 7.7 million people are enrolled in SAVE, under which anyone making $16 a hour or less has a monthly payment of $0 on their student loans. 4.5 million SAVE enrollees are making $0 a month payments and another 1 million pay less than $100 a month on their loan repayment, over 150,000 people so far have had their loans totally forgiven. Republicans are suing to try to shut down the SAVE Plan
President Biden took keep steps to ensure quality healthcare this week. Biden extended the window for low-income Americans to apply for Obamacare. The original deadline of July 31st has been pushed back to November 30th. Biden also rolled back Trump era rules that allowed subsidies for "Junk Health insurance" These plans offer very little coverage and often mislead consumers into believing they have insurance when they aren't covered. These short term plans also don't have meet Obamacare standards and can refuse coverage for preexisting conditions.
The EPA announced new regulations aimed at "turbocharging" the number of electric trucks on the road. The new rules aim to have 25% of new long-haul trucks, the heaviest often diesel trucks on the road, and 40% of medium-size trucks (box trucks and landscaping vehicles) be nonpolluting by 2032, currently just 2% are. The regulation would apply to more than 100 types of vehicles including tractor-trailers, ambulances, R.V.s, garbage trucks and moving vans. The new tailpipe limits are expected to prevent about a billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2055.
the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services  announced that thanks to President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, 41 different drugs will coast those on Medicare Part B less money than it did last year.  An estimated 763,700 people on Medicare use at least one of these drugs every year. Some enrollees will save as much as $3,575 per dose.
The Department of Energy announced $6 billion for an effort to decarbonize energy-intensive industries. The investment in 33 projects across 20 states will eliminate 14 million metric tons of CO2 emissions each year when finished. Each project is meant to be highly replicable and serve as a blueprint for future private sector ventures.
President Biden signed an Executive Order to Strengthen the Recognition of Women’s History. The Order will launch a review of all historic sites run by the National Parks Service to determine ways to better highlight the role of women, from all backgrounds, in American History.
The Senate Confirmed President Biden's nominees, Ernesto Gonzalez, and Leon Schydlower to federal judgeships in Texas. This brings the total number of federal judges appointed by President Biden to 190.

GENERAL STRIKE TIME BABEY. READ THE WHOLE POST.
While we're all mad at government sending money to Israel that police budgets are so inflated because of how often they pay settlements.
And also that it's a verified fact that our police train with Israeli soldiers. Remember when they were black bagging people in PDX? It reminded me of this ex-Israeli soldier talking about how they'd do the same thing to innocent Palestinians just to terrorize them and their neighbors. It was intentional terrorism when they did it.
Police budgets pay for all that.
Correction, we pay.
To put it more bluntly,
We pay for them to kill and terrorize people.
Just as our taxes pay for the deaths of Black and Brown people all over the world from Turtle Island to Sudan and Palestine.
In Dec. 2022, Louisville Metro Government agreed to pay Walker $2 million to settle lawsuits against the city. Metro government previously paid a $12 million settlement to Taylor’s family in Sept. 2020
We paid for Breonna Taylor's death.
And her murderers were never arrested btw. Not that there aren't still people trying to arrest them of course. But our money paid for their lawyers and wouldn't you know it, no charges have stuck.
Four years to the day after Breonna Taylor’s death, federal prosecutors are moving forward with a re-trial of one of the officers involved in the botched raid that ended her life. At a status conference Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings scheduled Brett Hankison’s final pre-trial hearing for September 13th. His re-trial is scheduled to begin on Oct. 15. In November of last year, Hankinson was tried for violating the Constitutional rights of Breonna Taylor, her boyfriend, and three neighbors when he fired through two covered windows during the raid. Prosecutors argued he used excessive force when he shot into the apartment complex blindly. Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, had fired at officers executing the search, claiming he thought they were intruders.
And Myles Cosgrove?
Yeah we're paying him to terrorize more people. He got a job as a fucking sheriff's deputy.
Myles Cosgrove, the former Louisville police officer, who was fired for fatally shooting Breonna Taylor in a botched 2020 police raid and hired earlier this year as a sheriff’s deputy in Carroll County, rammed a resident’s truck with his cruiser Monday and then pointed a gun at the owner and several bystanders, witnesses said.
Witnesses told The Courier Journal that Cosgrove barreled into Happy Hollow Private Resort Park trailer park at a high rate of speed without his emergency lights on, then struck William Joshua Short’s pickup truck with such force that it sent the vehicle flying into a building, breaking off two cinder blocks.
And Johnathan Mattingly wrote a fucking book about it to make money off of his role in her murder. $15 on Amazon.
He also wanted to sue Kenneth Walker, Breonna's boyfriend. You know why? For damages and injuries he sustained while killing Breonna Taylor.
WE PAID FOR ALL THAT. ALL OF IT.
Our power is in our dollar.
American politics and officials don't care for our lives. It's why they're content to watch us protest for months. Because we're still going to work. We are the worker ants simply fulfilling our duty, receiving the bare minimum to survive for our labor.
We're still building their bombs. Paying our taxes, so much that hardly any of us could afford more than rent.
We are just drones fulfilling our purpose to the upper class who doesn't give a shit about us beyond what we do for them and how little we will do it for.
If we want change we're gonna have to stop working. We're going to have to deprive them of products they sell, of our taxes, of our low cost labor.
And the strike that UAW is planning in May 2028 has inspired a lot of others to start looking at the opportunity to join in.
If you haven't heard of it yet, a strike is when workers organize and stop showing up for work. And a general strike is a mass strike across various industries around similar demands or bargaining positions.
There have been multiple calls for a general strike since then, predominantly from individuals and groups on social media, which has often resulted in confusion about what a general strike would actually look like. To be clear, a general strike is not a protest or a rally, a single picket line, or a boycott. It is, as I’ve previously defined, “a labor action in which a significant number of workers from a number of different industries who comprise a majority of the total labor force within a particular city, region, or country come together to take collective action.”
Throughout history, workers have used this tactic as a nuclear option to shut down entire cities when needed, including Philadelphia in 1835, Seattle in 1919, and beyond.[...]
If even four or five of the unions representing the workers mentioned above banded together in a nationwide general strike, the entire country would grind to a halt. When Shawn Fain asks his fellow unions to set the timer for May 2028, what he’s really saying is, get ready to shut sh*t down and level the playing field between bosses and workers once and for all.
JOIN A UNION. AND TALK ABOUT THIS.
And make one of the demands out to be an end of American support to countries participating in apartheid and genocide.
End the taxes for police budgets and settlements. If they want police departments so bad then they should FIND funding for themselves like the government makes USPS do.
One of the biggest pushbacks we hear is that there is never any official backing for calls to a general strike. Well here it is! Make sure you tell EVERYONE
This could be a global strike if other countries choose to participate on the same date
No, I don't think Palestine has 3 years so in the mean time join a union, keep protesting, start rioting, answer Every call to action coming from a Palestine and Sudan and the DRC and sign this strike card

okay. i just watched the movie Snakeskin (2001). i bought a physical dvd in the year of our lord 2024 because Taika has 6.5 minutes of screentime in it. and now i'm sitting here trying to process wtf i just watched asjdhfdjsk so here are the highlights (thank you Meow @blakbonnet for going through this experience with me)
first of all, enjoy these screenshots from the trailer (i'm still not sure if they're mandatory disclaimers?):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...but say yes to snake imagery, because there will be a lot of it
we are definitely in 2001. this is extremely apparent throughout the whole movie. but especially from this girl's hair
Tumblr media
Taika's character (Nelson) and his girlfriend (Daisy, pictured above) drive around in a repurposed ice cream truck and sell drugs btw. it's called Mr. Trippy.
main character Alice (Melanie Lynskey) is a huge fan of ✨America✨. her best friend is in love with her but she only wants Bad Boys. also said friend's name is Johnny but it's actually Craig
ALSO Craig-slash-Johnny is played by Dean O'Gorman (Fili)??!?!?!?
their hobby is to drive around picking up hitchhikers but only those who look not boring
enter The American. this guy is the most American you have ever seen. americans wish they could be as American as this guy. no one else has ever Americaned harder.
Tumblr media
as you can see, i'm not lying. he even says "howdy ma'am" so we're convinced he is a real American
three skinheads are after The American because he stole their drugs (i think). he also stole drugs from Nelson and Daisy, who now owe money and/or drugs to their boss, who also has beef with The American for reasons i'm still not totally sure of
The American not only steals drugs and money, he also has a real gun(!!!) and fucks pretty much everyone?
"darlin'. u gotta earn the raaaiht. ter wear snakeskins 😎"
oh my god the sunglasses emoji just reminded me of the fucking sunglasses oh no i'm not sure i can do this akjsdhjsk this will make sense later i promise
do not learn gun safety from this movie
at one point, there is a whole lotta sheep. we are, after all, in Aotearoa New Zealand. and ok this had the cutest moment of Taika yelling "SHEEPY" out of a car
there's a scene where uhm. uhhh no not gonna describe this i think but. yeah fair warning this movie has some period-typical homophobia let's just say 💀 this is the live reaction:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MOVING ON
if you enjoy the 2000s aesthetic of "look how edgy we are doing drugs" *colorful-haired people on couches in dark club* *echo-y laugh* *hallucinations* *it's mushrooms look it's mushrooms we're doing psychedelics* then this is the movie for you my friend
oh and Alice also did acid at some point while being very "i've totally done drugs before" about it (((doubt)))
GIRL GET UP FROM THAT DIRTY BATHROOM FLOOR
Tumblr media
[New Zealand accent] "wow. six and acid." yes she is living all her american dreams as you can see
by nighttime, all three cars (main characters, mr. trippy, and the nazimobile) and the motorcycle (mr. drug boss) have made it pretty far up the mountain, it seems. cute moment between mr. drug boss and nelson. look how :D he is!
Tumblr media
but you know a movie with Taika in it needs to have a father figure talk down to him so he gets very 🥺 right after this
lots of shit goes down (i won't spoil too much if by any chance you still want to watch this) and it turns out that the older skinhead guy is the best actor in the movie??
and NOW things get weird
Craig and The American have so much beef by now that they decide to solve it by russian roulette
Alice's reaction to this is something like "ugh, you guys are crazy, i can't watch this 🙄"
Tumblr media
like she just walks away?? GIRL THEY'RE AIMING A REAL GUN AT EACH OTHER
she keeps COMPLETELY UNDERREACTING TO WHAT IS HAPPENING like (spoilers from now on) CRAIG IS SHOT AND KILLED and she doesn't even run over and she doesn't even say anything to The American?? WHO SHOT HIM???? he's just standing there??
and then. AND THEN.
ok this is where i fully lost it for several minutes and missed half the following scene. i was fucking HOWLING like actually crying with laughter, i couldn't see or breathe and my partner got worried ksjdhfdjsk ok so here's what happens
they're in the car. craig is obviously very dead. alice is kinda in denial i guess. The American tells her to shut his eyes and she's like why? BECAUSE HE DEAD GIRL!! but she doesn't, she doesn't shut his eyes, no, this is what she does instead
Tumblr media
I COULD BARELY MAKE THIS GIF BECAUSE I KEPT LAUGHING TO THE POINT OF TEARS
NOT THE SUNGLASSES ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. THE UNTAPPED MEME POTENTIAL HERE IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS
ANYWAY shortly after this we hear one of the funniest lines in the movie (and it's not even about the shooting and killing of Craig):
"fuck, Seth! this isn't fucking America, you can't just go around shooting everybody!"
oh yeah The American does have a name and it's Seth
i'll just post a few chat screenshots for the next part because i can't really describe it, i promise we're almost at the end
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after some incredible visual effects™️, we end with Return of the Sunglasses (and me scaring my cats away because i was sobbing again)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i haven't even really talked about Taika's scenes much (the reason i watched this in the first place) because the ending took me OUT and honestly he is maybe the most normal person in this whole movie. one review (from the trailer) wrote this:
Tumblr media
and yeah that may honestly be the best way to describe it. 10/10 movie watching experience, highly recommend. thank you for coming to my snek talk

Sawyer family backstory headcanons!
Draytons parents were in their late teens (18 and 19) when they had him and his mother married into the family since the wife usually always takes the husbands last name
The reason why there is such a large age gap between Drayton and his 3 brothers is because his parents wanted to wait till they were in their thirties to try having more kids but they faced fertility problems, making their other boys be born in their fourties
(Just because the brothers fight with each other doesn’t mean that they had a bad home life that’s just a thing that siblings do which as one I can definitely confirm lol)
They all lived in Grandpa and Grandma Sawyers house but since the father and grandfather would be at the slaughterhouse it left the women to watch over them
Drayton started working at the gas station when he was 16 and although his father was a bit disappointed that he wasn’t going to work at the slaughterhouse he was still supportive of him nonetheless
Mama Sawyer was a free spirit and always encouraged her kids to do whatever made them happy regardless of how strange their activities were *ahem* Nubbins, and taught Drayton how to cook which is why it’s his favorite activity to do
Papa Sawyer was a bit more realistic and calmer than his wife but still loved his boys anyway and taught them how to skin animals and how to hunt. He also worried about finances and the boys going off and being wild children.
Grandma Sawyer taught her grandsons how to sew and how to fix things around the house such as furniture and lamps
Grandpa Sawyer was always playing with them and listening to whatever they wanted to talk about and his grandsons mainly came to him if they were upset over something
Nubbins, Bubba, and Chop Top all canonically worked at the slaughterhouse likely starting at the age of 18 and into their early to mid twenties until their grandfather quit in protest and they followed suite
Worried about finances their father decided to travel elsewhere looking for work and his wife joined him since she didn’t want him to be alone and because her boys were already grown, before leaving she told her boys to look after one another and then they left
However as they were away they were murdered by a serial killer and their bodies were never found the family just assumed that maybe they just haven’t found work yet but deep down Drayton thinks they just got sick of having to waste their money on them and left
Shortly afterwards a robber would break into their home at night and kill the grandmother and in a fit of rage they all attacked the robber and in their madness and grief would decide to cook and eat the robber
This explains why they eat people and why they hate outsiders so much
After this grandpa sawyer would fall into his current state after having lost the love of his life and would remain that way for most of the time
Drayton would all of a sudden be forced to take on the responsibility of caring for his reckless brothers which is when he would have angry outbursts and use the broom
Nubbins doesn’t really care about bothering him (we see in the first movie he’s not scared when Drayton hits or threatens him and instead openly mocks him) and chooses to do whatever he wants even if his brother doesn’t approve such as leaving Bubba alone even thought Draytons scared someone will hurt him like they did with his grandma
Bubba is more frightened when Drayton gets like that since growing up his brother was always kind and would take care of them all, so seeing that side of him is something else entirely
Chop is kinda like Nubbins but not as extreme and is more comfortable being around him (in tcm2 he latches onto Draytons sleeve when Enright arrives and is always joking and singing to his brother) and when he was younger he would ride in the pickup truck along with Drayton or his mama and they would sing along to the radio
Chop has a strong sense of patriotism (as suggested in the trailers for the All American Massacre movie that was never released) and wanted to join the army to fight for his country like his daddy always taught him to do
Drayton although concerned for his younger brother encouraged him to serve since he would learn more about the world (and because it would be one less mouth to feed 👀)
(This is my first time writing headcanons so let me know what else I could write about for them in the asks!)

A New Sheriff In Town
Tumblr media
Summary: The reader takes over as acting Sheriff when Beau is forced to be out on leave. Except the normally friendly Beau is anything but when he finds out it’s up to the reader when he comes back to work…
Pairing: Beau Arlen x Marshal!reader
Word Count: 3,500ish
Warnings: language, mentioned kidnapping/betrayal
A/N: Was missing Beau over the hiatus and came up with this little glimpse of him!...
________
“Hello?” You popped your head up from your laptop, smiling at the handsome, albeit tired, looking man in front of you.
“Sheriff Beau Arlen,” you said, standing from your chair. He nodded, a confused smile crossing his face.
“Not that I normally don’t mind finding an attractive woman in my presence, but do you care to explain to me what you’re doing in my office, at my desk?” You smiled and pushed your jacket away from your hip, showing off your badge.
“US Marshal Y/N Y/L/N. I’m the interim sheriff while you are on medical leave.” His face flashed between alarm, anger and back to alarm in the span of a second. “Take it up with your boss if you have a problem with it.”
“I am fine. I-”
“Beau Arlen,” you said, picking up a file, flipping through a few pages. “You were kidnapped for the past two days, correct? Rescued yesterday afternoon with minor injuries.”
“Exactly. Minor,” he said, snatching the file out of your hands. You looked him up and down. He was handsome when he wasn’t scowling at you like you kicked his puppy. “Now call your damn boss and let me get back to my job.”
“Funny. Everyone around here tells me you’re as sweet as can be, a nice, happy guy. But you’re being a bit of a dick. You know why?”
“Because you’re in my fucking office!” he said.
“Some injuries you don’t see. Now I am sorry but I’m in charge and-”
“Why isn’t Deputy Hoyt interim sheriff?” he said, tossing the file on the desk. “She’s my number two. Why-”
“Deputy Hoyt is visiting her son at college. She has too many unused vacation days and she was far more willing when I told her to take a leave of absence.”
“She would never-”
“She would because she did. Don’t be the fucking tough guy. Go home. Talk to a therapist. Binge watch Netflix and eat junk food. I don’t care. But know you do not get back in that chair until I authorize it and you are far from it.”
His eye twitched and he huffed, storming out, slamming the door along the way. You groaned and sat back down, the door opening after a moment, one of your deputies poking his head in. “Yeah Poppernak?”
“He’s really nice when you get to know him,” he said with a sheepish smile. “He’s just…”
“I know.” You held out the file Beau had thrown down, Poppernak walking inside to take it from you. “What’s he like? Hobbies, food, stuff like that.”
“Why?”
“Just trust me deputy.”
“Are you going to harass me at my home too?” scoffed Beau the second you were out of your truck, approaching his air streamer that evening.
“Anyone ever tell you that you live in the most gorgeous trailer in the world? God, you could charge newlyweds a whole bunch of cash just so they could bang for the night under the stars.” He grumbled as you reached inside your truck across the bench and pulled out a bag, smiling as you approached him. He was wearing a jacket and jeans, feet barefoot as he sat in a lounge chair in front of a nice large fire pit.
You stepped up onto the deck, offering the bag to him.
“Go away.”
“Wow. You really are being a jerk. It’s a good thing I’m here then,” you said. You sat the bag down on his table, pulling out a pair of containers and a DVD. You carried one over to him, setting it in his lap. He eyed it suspiciously before flipping it open, a large sandwich and side of fries inside.
“This is a meat lovers from Donno’s diner,” he said, voice rough.
“I don’t know who Donno is but I did some recon and it turns out Beau Arlen, you are a man that appreciates a good meal. I love a fellow foodie,” you said, holding up the DVD. “And because I know you love your movies too, I brought my favorite romance, The American President. Now I know, not a classical romance but you’ll like it.”
“What the hell are you doing here?” he asked. You pushed up your jacket and shirt on your right side, exposing your torso where a faded pink scar shown bright on your skin.
“My spotter fucked up on one of my cases as a Marshall. I got kidnapped and only a little hurt like someone I know. But it fucks you up and it’ll keep fucking you up until you deal with it. Now that’s the job of your department therapist but at home comforts help too.”
“That’s a scar from getting your appendix out.”
“Alright,” you said, sitting down in the chair beside him. “You caught me. But that did happen to my old partner so I know it’s true.”
“Listen,” he said, setting the food aside. “I appreciate the dinner and while normally I’m a much more pleasant person, can you leave and let me have my station back?”
You sighed, Beau rolling his eyes. “Sorry bud. Enjoy the forced vacation.”
“I don’t like you!” he called as you headed back for your truck.
“Never met a cop who has!” you shouted back with a wave. You kept a smile until you were back in your car, slowly closing your eyes.
This was not the relaxing vacation you were hoping for.
“Marshal,” said Beau the next day, trying to walk past you into the station.
“Sheriff,” you said, curling a finger at him, enjoying your cup of coffee on your morning break. “Take a step in that building and I’ll have you arrested.”
“I’m sure you will,” he said, walking straight on inside.
“I warned him,” you said to yourself, finishing off your coffee before going in after him. He was in his office when you got there, adjusting the height of his chair. “Beau Arlen you’re under arrest for violating direct orders from your superior.”
He chuckled, grabbing a pad of paper. “That’s real cute. Why don’t you-Hey!”
You shoved him down on the desk, cuffing him and dragging him out the side entrance, avoiding most of the other officers. “I told you.”
“Oh I swear I’m calling your boss and getting you fired,” he growled. You just whistled, guiding him outside and over to his truck. “Marshal-“
“Be anywhere but here. The more you resist, the longer I stay. Period.” You uncuffed him, Beau rubbing his wrists, faded red marks marring his skin. He huffed, opening his door when you put a hand on it. “Please listen to me.”
He simply jerked the door open, driving away without saying another word.
Two Weeks Later
“Oh come on,” said a gruff male voice. You turned around from where you were fishing, perched on a rock along the river, Beau meeting your gaze. He had a baseball cap on and a fishing pole in his hand. “Are you stalking me or some shit?”
“We can share. Plenty of fish,” you said, Beau grumbling before he walked over, sitting nearby. “I haven’t seen you in a while.”
“Yup. Now when exactly can I get back to work?”
“When I say so.”
“This is a total abuse of power you realize.”
“This isn’t how I wanted to spend my vacation either so don’t be pissed off at me,” you said, reeling in your line a smidge.
“Then why are you acting as sheriff?”
“Because I have experience and I wasn’t personally affected by your kidnapping like all of your officers were. You came from the outside. I know you understand that.” He hummed, the air quiet save for the sound of running water.
“So…what exactly do I have to do to convince you to let me back to work and you finish your vacation?” You reeled in your line, packing up your tackle box and standing. “Hey. Where-“
“Because I want to have one relaxing fishing trip and you just don’t stop.” You started to leave when Beau hopped up, chasing after you.
“Marshal, wait.”
“My name is Y/N,” you said, walking across the rocks carefully, unfortunately giving him a chance to catch up. “Beau just-“
“I’m sorry for being an ass.” You stopped, dropping your head. “I get…I don’t handle trauma well.”
“Who does?” You spun around, Beau smiling softly. “It’s not a punishment. I’m trying to help you.”
“I know. I know I have to deal with it to process it and move past it but it’s…I’m not in a big rush to feel vulnerable like that again.”
“I understand but until you do, I’m in charge around here.”
“The Marshal service is going to just let you stay here however long you tell them?”
“Yes.” He raised an eyebrow. “Oh sweetie, playing on the federal level is a whole other game of office politics.”
“So who fucked you over?” he asked. You breathed slowly, even.
“You know that story I told you about my partner getting captured? That was really me and my partner fucked me over on purpose after I expressed concerns to my supervisor. No internal case and I get to do whatever the fuck I want now. My pick of cases, my choice of vacations, whatever I want I get all to cover up for his fuck up of a son.” Beau blinked, smiling softly. “What?”
“You let me go off on you when you’ve gone through shit that I dismissed. You’ve been nothing but nice and it sounds like you keep getting surrounded by dickheads,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck.
“You’re not a dick. You’re processing,” you said. He nodded back at the river.
“It’s a big river. We could share.”
“Alright. But keep the gabbing down. Fish’ll hear ya.”
Three Hours Later
“So did you make some sort of deal with the fish devil?” asked Beau as you headed back towards your vehicles, a storm rolling in. “Because you caught close to twenty by my count and I caught a whopping one.”
“You’re right,” you said, packing up the back of your truck. “I’m part of the trout cult. We sell our souls to be able to catch and release some fish on our days off.”
“You’re joking, right?” You rolled your eyes, shutting your lift gate. “Hey, you never know what people are into.”
“This job has taught me one and that is that you definitely cannot judge a book by it’s cover.”
“Marshal.” You pursed your lips, Beau stepping closer. “Y/N. Do you want to get out of the rain, grab a cold beer in a warm bar?”
“Follow me. I know a place.”
Twenty minutes later you were sat in a corner booth near a fireplace, Beau looking around the small bar.
“How’d you find this place?” he asked after you had your drinks, a basket of fries between you. You took a short sip, leaning back.
“I was feeling pretty shitty a number of years back after the partner betrayal thing. Just drove and drove for days. I wound up in Helena, drove around until I found a bar and then proceeded to get shit faced in this booth.”
Beau munched on a fry, taking off his jacket while he chewed. “You’ve been in Montana all this time?”
“No. The bartender called me a cab and booked me a motel room when I broke down. I stayed there a few days feeling sorry for myself before I sobered up and went back to Knetucky. That’s when I gave my boss a list of demands for not saying shit about his son. After that, I bounced around working solo cases, mostly money trails, until I came back here. Now I work a remote desk job, help out local law enforcement when needed. Found some peace and comfort along the way.”
He nodded, fiddling with his beer bottle. “You should work for me.”
“Beau.”
“I’m serious,” he said, green eyes flickering over to you. “If you’re a Marshal you could easily pass the exams. You could work the field again with people you trust. My people are clean.”
“I know. I can tell you run a tight ship,” you said, his head tilting. “I don’t think I’m cut out for field work anymore.”
“This is Helena, not Detroit,” he chuckled. “You’d be a deputy, have seniority, get to run investigations. It wouldn’t be all that different than what you do now I’m sure.”
“You offering me a job so you can get back to work sooner?” you teased. He held up his hands, smiling proudly.
“Nope. I know a good cop when I see one is all.”
“I’m a US Marshal, Sheriff. I outrank you for all intents and purposes.”
“Well…I don’t have a good reason to give that up,” he chuckled. “But we could find a desk space for you in the office, when I do eventually go back to work. It’d be nice to have someone with such superior expertise at our disposal.”
You flipped him the bird, Beau laughing against the rim of his bottle, taking a long drag. “Offers on the table is all I’m saying.”
“I work better alone Beau. But, when you are back in charge, call me up if you need a local Marshal.”
“Will do,” he said, tipping his bottle towards you. You clinked it with your own, the air turning warmer, heat from the fireplace spilling out. “Any advice on how to get over the whole…you know.”
“Accept that you were afraid, that you could have died, and that you aren’t weak because of it. The people we help every day aren’t weak because something bad happened to them. They just had bad shit happen and that’s it. That’s all it was Beau. Something bad. You’ll feel better with time and the more you start to believe that.”
He nodded, gaze fixated on the table in front of you. “Sorry for being a dick before.”
“Sorry for being pushy.”
“I needed it,” he said with a smile.
“Oh I know,” you laughed. He chuckled, stealing another fry from the basket. “So. How’d a Texas boy like you wind up here?”
“Like you don’t already know,” he said, face softening. You shrugged.
“Yeah but I’d rather hear your version.”
“Alright. Be careful what you wish for though.”
Two Weeks Later
“Marshal Y/L/N,” said Beau behind a pair of sunglasses, badge back on his hip. You smiled behind your own, crossing your arms as you stopped beside him, looking into the back of the overturned truck on the highway. “I think we found the money from that bank robbery in Washington last week.”
“Looks like you did. You got to love when criminals are morons,” you said, peeking your head into the back. You cocked your head, scanning the scattered bills. “You’re missing about five million.”
“How can you tell?” he asked, looking inside with you.
“One duffel bag fits about five million. The bank reported fifty stolen. But you only have-”
“Nine bags,” he said, straightening up, lips pursed. “Let’s talk to the driver.”
“Mind if I take lead?” you asked. He waved you forward, letting you approach the man cuffed at the end of Poppernak’s squad car. “Hey Joe. I know you know you’re in deep shit so let’s skip the small talk. I know you crashed on purpose and I know you’re supposed to take the blame and we’re supposed to assume you have the other five million stashed somewhere. But we both know that’s not the truth. So why don’t you tell us who is actually behind this and we will go find your girlfriend for you, maybe even find a bit of leniency for you. What do you say?”
Thirty minutes later you were in Beau’s truck, tapping your fingers against the door panel. “Okay. How the fuck did you do that?”
“Marshal service suspected the bank manager was behind it. Joe Niven is a guard at work there, been missing several days. But so has Joe’s girlfriend. Now one could assume they were on the run together but Joe’s girlfriend didn’t show up to work for two days before the robbery happened. I had a gut feeling it was coercion. Joe confirmed that.”
“How can we trust his word?” he asked, turning down a road, a trail of police cars after you.
“His knuckles were scrapped up and he had bruises on his biceps like someone dragged him back. They showed him the girlfriend, Joe got pissed and they separated him from her before he had a chance to get her out. He couldn’t have grabbed himself like that, fingertips are all wrong.”
“Why would he trust us then?”
“Because the robbery was days ago and Joe wouldn’t still be doing what they asked if the girlfriend was free. It’s going to leak soon they found the money on the highway. When it does, that girlfriend is dead which is why we’re going to Elden pass. He said he heard howling in the background. Wolves migrate through Elden pass this time of year and yes, the only reason I know that is because I’m a documentary nerd.”
“You have no idea how much I want you to take that job offer.” You smirked, nerves crawling up your spine. “You got my back in there?”
You turned in your seat, brow furrowed. “You want me going into the scene?”
“You have more tactical experience than any of my people and it’s my first run back. I could use a steady hand with me.”
“Beau, I haven’t been-”
“I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t think you could handle yourself.” You closed your eyes, nodding to yourself. “Okay?”
“Okay,” you breathed out. “I got your back.”
“Nice job in there,” said Beau an hour later, the sunset making his hair seem golden. You were leaned against his truck, Beau sliding over to stand beside you. “Thank you. I know it was dangerous going in to get Jane out.”
“I was scared to death,” you said, running a hand over the thick, heavy vest you wore. “But as soon as we went in, that went away. I’ve been terrified of real field work for years and I thought it was because of what had happened but really, it’s because I didn’t trust anyone after that. But I did today. I trusted you and your people and because of that, we were able to save that woman.”
“I’m not joking when I say I’d love for you to work with us regularly, even on a consultant basis.”
“Maybe I do need a change.” You looked over at him, Beau smiling wide. “I’ll think about it. No promises.”
“That’s all I can ask. In the meantime, you want to come to movie night? We can watch my new favorite drama chick flick.”
“You watched it!” you said, eyes wide. “What did you think? Tell me everything.”
“I think it is the most random ass excuse for a chick flick I’ve ever seen yet I really enjoyed it. So you want to come over and watch? We could order a pizza, unwind after a long day.”
“I’d love that, Beau.” He tucked your hair behind your ear, a spark rushing up your spine.
“See you at my place in an hour.” He didn’t walk away though. Instead he smiled, leaned down and placed a soft, lazy kiss on your lips. You were surprised to say the least. You knew you were getting friendlier but you weren’t expecting that. He pulled back, letting the kiss linger before his eyes were taking in your face. “You know what I liked about that movie? She doesn’t give a fuck that he’s the president. He’s just a guy she likes. And he goes for it despite how horribly wrong it could all go cause he comes with a lot of baggage and that should scare her but it doesn’t. And even though he’s got to do something that goes against her, they still find a way to make it work in the end. Reminds me of this idiot guy I know.”
“Beau,” you whispered as he played with the end of your hair. “Is tonight a date?”
“You tell me.” You put a hand on his chest, tapping the spot where his name was woven into his vest.
“Make it a supreme pizza,” you said. “I ain’t a girl that hides how much she loves to eat on the first date.”
“You got it,” he said, his smile faltering only slightly when someone called his name. “Let yourself in if you get there before me. Key is under the patio chair.”
“You’d trust me with a key to your house?” you asked as he walked away.
“I trusted you the whole time, Y/N. Just took a while to admit it to myself,” he said, spinning around with a grin. “See you later, Marshal.”
“Yes you will, Sheriff.”
