SYNOPSIS: Vicaria is a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. Death is ever present in Vicaria's world - violence, police brutality, substance abuse - and after watching her mother and brother succumb, she's had enough. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, she embarks on a dangerous journey to put an end to all this death… by bringing the dead back to life.

REVIEW: From the writing to the directing by Bomani J. Story, to mesmerizing performances, THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER captures the intensity of the classic Hammer Horror films with black exploitation films for a brilliant modern take on Shelly’s “Frankenstein.”

From the character voices, to the character arcs and the way themes are blended together, Story is an amazing writer who seamlessly blends the contemporary elements with science fiction themes and touches on numerous issues and makes it all work. He brings many things in front of the lens and presents them in a way that permits the viewer to reflect on them without feeling they're being preached to. Vicaria has numerous poignant lines that feel like inspired observations. Story nicely lays out Vicaria’s character arc so that her hubris overshadows her choices that affect her family in much the same way Victor Frankenstein’s family suffers from his choices. He presents the tragedies that have influenced Vicaria’s decisions, further impact by the urban community she lives in filled with drug dealers, police conflict and poverty. He creates genuine voices and realistic situations that he nicely folds in the science fiction and horror aspects. It's powerful, engaging, and passionate.

This is an independent film that looks like a million bucks. I liked the organic feel of Vicaria’s lab, made from elements she would find in her community.The other locations feel organic and grounded. Built into that are some nice color schemes that add to the tone of the film. Cinematographer Daphne Qin’s work adds soft tones to this star reality. It feels authentic, still engaging and at times like shadows in a nightmare. A nice balance. It’s well framed and paced, and is wonderfully lit. The filmmakers do an outstanding job of creating this world. Mixed in as a fantastic score by Nima Fakhrara. There are classic themes with some modern sounds blended in to create this hybrid sound that adds magic to the narrative.

Story’s film features a soulful cast, with a tour de force performance by actress Laya DeLeon Hayes. Currently starring opposite Queen Latifah on the CBS series "The Equalizer," and known for voicing the main character of the award-winning animated series "Doc McStuffins," Hayes brings a vast palate to the role. It’s a unique character that even exhibits a touch of madness, and she weaves it all into a believable and impassioned performance. Adding some delight and joy to the film is the young actress Amani Summer who plays Jada. She radiates attitude and innocence, and her performances lights up the screen.

THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER embraces all the history from which it springs from, including the black exploitation films of the 70’s. However, there is a respect and intensity with which Story presents these characters that it never feels like exploitation. Likewise, his humor comes from the interaction between characters, never at the expense of characters or the themes of the film. There is a raw honesty in the screenplay and the directing that perfectly does what any good genre story should - explore the human condition in a different light. This is Bomani J. Story’s directorial debut and he demonstrates adept skills as a filmmaker and a master storyteller. I’m excited to see what he does next.

i'll describe multiple because i love them all. my longest lasting friendship of 16 years (technically 20 but we were in diapers) is with my palestinian childhood best friend. she's the most gorgeous girl i've ever seen in my life i can't even really describe how stunning she is, she's always been breathtaking. we don't have much in common and honestly if it weren't for the fact that we grew up together i doubt we would have been friends, but i'm endlessly glad circumstance brought us together. i know everything about her, i was there to witness most of it and vice versa. i miss her so much i hope i can visit her in jordan some time soon

my best friend from middle school is my match in many ways. we just click so well, we have similar interests, similar values. she's one of the only people i came out to (about multiple things😭) and i didn't feel any hesitation or regret about it. she's so funny, and hardworking, and sharp, like i never stop being impressed with her character despite knowing her for several years now. we were planning on studying abroad and rooming together when we were applying for university, i wouldn't have considered that with anyone but her tbh. she's in egypt rn but the distance hasn't strained our friendship one bit

The Story of a Displaced Gazan Family:

Our story began on the morning of October 7th. I had woken up as usual to get ready for school, while my father Nidal, as always, was up early to go to his construction job, and my mother Amani was preparing breakfast for us. But that morning was different; it wasn't like any other morning. Barely an hour had passed before the sounds of massive explosions echoed everywhere. The peaceful morning transformed into a horrifying scene, as if the entire city was shaking beneath our feet 💔.

Within moments, Gaza turned into a sea of fire and smoke. The sky was filled with aircraft, and shells rained down on every corner. There was no time to think or make decisions—every moment held danger that threatened our lives 😞. My father was talking with our neighbors, then he returned to us, his voice filled with worry: "We have to leave immediately. We’ll go south, where it might be safer."

We hurriedly gathered whatever essentials we could—some clothes, some food—and carried my little brother Ahmed, who was just five years old. My mother held him close, as if shielding him from the world 🌍💔. My sister Sama cried silently while holding my hand, and my brother Mohammed looked scared but tried to hide his fear.

The Journey South:

The journey was long and difficult; we took rugged paths and tried to avoid areas that might be targeted. Other families were also fleeing, each carrying their own story of suffering and fear 😔. Children were crying, mothers exchanged worried glances, and fathers silently searched for safety. After hours of walking, we finally reached a southern area where some makeshift tents were set up for shelter. We had to start over, but this time, our home was just a tent that barely shielded us from the harsh summer heat or the cold winter nights 🏕️.

Life in the Tent:

Life in the tent was harsh and difficult 💔. It was small, not enough to meet our basic needs. During the day, the sun blazed intensely 🔥, and we tried to hide from its stifling heat. At night, the air was cold, and we huddled together for warmth. We had no electricity, and the only blankets we had were those distributed by aid agencies 😞.

In the first weeks, things were extremely challenging; we barely had access to clean water, and sometimes we had to drink contaminated water, which led to health issues 🤢. We suffered from diarrhea and fevers frequently, and our bodies grew weak, especially my little brother Ahmed, who developed a persistent cough and high fever 😥.

Health and Skin Issues:

Over time, red spots and severe itching began to appear on our skin. At first, we didn’t understand what was happening to us, but soon we realized we were suffering from skin diseases due to the lack of cleanliness and insufficient water to bathe regularly 💔. Both my skin and Mohammed’s were covered in itchy sores that caused us intense pain 😢.

My mother was worried about all of us, especially Sama, my fourteen-year-old sister, who was developing severe allergies. She tried not to tell my mom about the pain she was feeling, but sometimes she would wake up at night crying 😭. We missed seeing a doctor; in this area, only one doctor visited occasionally to give out some basic medicines, which were not enough for our condition 💔.

Psychological Struggles:

It wasn’t just the physical suffering that we endured; fear and uncertainty loomed over our lives. I would wake up every night to the sound of Mohammed screaming in his sleep 😰; he constantly dreamt of scenes of war and bombings, and these dreams turned into nightmares that haunted all of us 😟. My mother would whisper words of comfort, though she too was struggling in silence. She tried to hide her tears from us, but I could feel her pain and her helplessness to protect us from everything happening around us 💔.

My father, Nidal, was always trying to find work in the south to provide us with some food, but each time he returned disappointed; work was scarce, and the situation was hard 😞. He looked at us with eyes full of sorrow and pain, especially when he saw my little brother Ahmed pleading for a small piece of candy or a toy to ease his suffering 😔🍬.

Life Without Hope:

The days passed slowly, each day bringing a new challenge. I tried to find hope in anything—a conversation with our displaced neighbors, or a small laugh from my brother Mohammed when he tried to forget. But everything around us reminded us of our harsh reality: the dust covering our faces, the increasing illnesses, and the hunger that never left our bellies 🍂😔.

I started feeling that life was slipping away from us, and that the world had completely forgotten us. We hoped this war would end soon, so we could return to our home, which is now destroyed. But as days passed, those hopes began to fade 💔. The idea of going back became a distant dream, and staying in this tent became an inescapable reality 🏕️.

Conclusion:

Today, as we live amid this suffering, all I can do is share our story and try to hold on to a glimmer of hope. We may not have a home, we may not have enough food or healthcare, but we still have each other ❤️. My mother, my father, and my siblings are all I have, and I will stay strong for them, no matter the hardships.

IV. SIN'DOREI FOOD, DRINK, AND OTHER CULTURAL TRADITIONS

LEISURE

In terms of leisure activities, the Sin'dorei enjoy a plethora of delights that range from the lavishly self-indulgent to the almost bewilderingly mundane:

Raising and caring for mana wyrmlings is an ancient practice that dates back to the pre-Azsharan era of the Highborne, when these creatures were first created by magisters. More alike to familiars than to true beasts, mana wyrmlings require no upkeep but the passive mana provided by their surroundings, and drift lazily from place to place in an endless search for more pockets of magical energy. Useful both for spellbreaking (as a last resort defense of one's self) and for locating strong or fluctuating points along the ley lines, mana wyrmlings are often also good pets as long as they are well fed… but not exactly interesting ones. Initially, the wyrms were used to tend to our forests and gardens on our behalf, and most even in the wild still do so today. 

(However, which line of 'breeding' they descend from significantly alters their base personality, such as 'shimmering' wyrmlings — supposedly the most alike to their initial creator's vision — which are known for their beautifully diamond-like scales and sweet, cuddly temperaments. The few dedicated hobbyists there are take great pains to trace the lineages of such things, even if a wyrmling that hungers is still a wyrmling that bites no matter its 'station'.)

FOOD

The average Sin'dorei eats predominantly fungi and fruit. 

They are not vegetarian: lynxes are eaten in hard times, or when the population needs to be culled, but is otherwise uncommon. Dragonhawk eggs are also plentiful and inexpensive, and are often had at least once per day; cold saltwater fish make up the vast majority of their meat consumption, but in most households would be limited to a weekly or biweekly dinner dish. In southern Quel'thalas, making kabobs out of spider meat is also implied to be a very common dish if not a very popular one, not at all unlike the Kaldorei's predilection towards it. The texture is apparently quite crunchy, and it is especially repulsive to the more 'civilized' folk from Silvermoon City: 

("This is intolerable! I have nothing to work with here! Milady asks me to come from Silvermoon City; she deserves cuisine as befits her station. No? But I get here and there is no food. You must go out, <class>, and bring back fresh kills so that I have something to prepare. Dame Auriferous prefers a crunchy texture to her food. There are plenty of spindleweb lurkers to the southwest on the other side of the Dead Scar. Disgusting, I know, but that's what we have to work with."

Having already been a seafaring species and culturally revering sailors from the time of their nation's founding, Quel'thalas itself is surrounded by ample but cold saltwater oceans and comparatively limited forest, which the nature-revering Quel'dorei had ever been protective of—to say nothing of the initial Amani occupation of the area, which further limited their ability to both farm and to expand even if they had wanted to deforest some areas for farming. Sin'dorei cuisine consequently revolves heavily around fishing. They protect the local wildlife but also preserve the balance that had already existed before they arrived; though the razing of Quel'thalas has reduced the population of their wildlife to dangerously near-extinction numbers, prior to that point the Sin'dorei had also enjoyed the meat of the local wildlife. As the culling of the local fauna is a protected and near-sacred duty carefully regulated by the Farstriders, these meals are generally celebratory or luxurious. 

The lack of a winter season and the nearly endless days during the summer allow Quel'thalas to cultivate nearly anything they desire to. 

Quel'thalas wine is usually made from delicate grapes grown in regions that are now destroyed, or else from pomegranates, goldenbark apples (below), or from honey to make a rich and mana-infused mead. Dandelion and rose hip wine are both not unheard of, but are Kaldorei recipes and are thus uncommonly seen.  

Goldenbark apples are an extremely sweet, mana-rich delicacy favored by the local dragonhawks long before the arrival of the Quel'dorei. These apples naturally fruit very infrequently from the massive and ancient, golden-leaved trees of Quel'thalas, the occurrence of which is always seen as a sign of good fortune and prosperity, and are otherwise only farmed by a select few botanists and rangers in tiny gardens. Magical duplication of the fruit is possible without damaging its flavor, but they simply may not be created from nothing; thus is the possession of apples a mark of status, though neither is it uncommon to see on the tables of even the reasonably comfortable or in the baskets of fruit vendors. 

The fish they consume does not reflect the otherwise temperate-to-tropical, flora-rich environment of their small kingdom. The waters that Quel'thalas controls far outstrips the amount of land it has available to it; furthermore, unlike their control over the land, the harsh northern ocean is far harder to control or change by even magical means. To alter the currents or their temperature would have untold effects on the rest of Azeroth besides. Pinned between the icy seas of Northrend and the cool saltwater oceans that surround island nations such as Kul Tiras, Quel'thalas is entirely ruled by the dominating major currents that sweep down from Northrend but also benefit from its relatively untouched bounty: their ship docks and steep ocean cliffs are home to massive populations of darkwater clams, and huge schools of slitherskin mackerel and sardines are easily fished up a mere few miles offshore. Clams and mackerel are easily foraged by any enterprising Sin'dorei with so much as a canoe, and are thus relatively inexpensive and common meals. The local mackerel are also a particular favorite treat for the Quel'thalas lynx and famously helpful in teaching them tricks. 

There are also coldwater clownfish, damsels, angelfish, butterflyfish, gobies, blennies, and wrassies, all of which can be found in any major cold saltwater body, and these are either kept as decorative pets or used to feed the dragonhawks and lynxes of the Farstrider cavalry. None of them are generally considered to be fit for Sin'dorei consumption. 

Though not native to Quel'thalas, Northrend is particularly famous for its glacial salmon, which mostly live off of the coasts of the Howling Fjord, as well as its dangerous jellyfish and eels. These are rare but treasured visitors. The poison of the Borean man'o'war is one of the most potent that the Farstriders possess; salmon and eel are both highly nutritious and dangerously invasive besides, and so are hunted voraciously and then eaten as expensive delicacies on the rare occasion that they are driven south.

Besties

Groups of Two (not including siblings, niblings, or friendships that become romantic later on):

Alex and Roland: The two aromantic/asexuals. They're also the two oldest, so they've spent more time together than anyone else.

Roland and Leo: The Sane Ones TM. They're the ones who constantly complain about everyone else's bullshit. Leo's the mom friend, Roland's the older brother friend. They understand each other.

Roland and Alice: (future siblings-in-law don't count) They get along weirdly well, despite the age and personality difference. Roland also spent most of his childhood in the Enchanted Forest like Alice did, so they bond over that.

Alex and PJ: The wild children. They drink and go to parties together, much to Roland and Leo's annoyance.

Hope and Alex: They keep getting mistaken for siblings, even after Alice is rescued. They both just love getting into trouble.

Robyn and Hope: For somewhat complicated reasons, they're frenemies. They argue the most out of all the friends, because they are incredibly similar.

Gideon and Robyn: They're apart of the exclusive "I hate one of my parents" club, the "I hate my powers" club, and of course the "I get bullied at school for who my parent(s) are" club.

Alice and Gideon: When Robyn and Hope squable, Gideon and Alice are tasked with making sure it doesn't go to far. They've found out that they're pretty similar this way

Dating (former, current, and future):

Alex and Robyn: Alex was still coming to terms with their asexuality, and trying to figure out the difference between friendship and romance and all that other fun stuff. Robyn developed a crush on them, so they dated for a week or so, during the summer before Alex's senior year, and Robyn's sophomore year. Alex eventually figured herself out, and tried to let Robyn down as gently as possible. They didn't talk for the rest of the summer, but Robyn eventually cooled down enough, and they came to an understanding. Robyn still teases them about That One Time they dated.

PJ and Conrad: Conrad is Alex's step-cousin, the son of Clorinda. PJ had just come out, and was experimenting. They dated for the summer before freshman year, then called things off mutually. They still talk, and PJ helped Conrad get together with Orville, Kathryn and Frederick's son.

PJ and Jack (otherwise known as 'He Who Shall Not Be Named'): Jack is a football player, who PJ dated for a few months sophomore year. Things got toxic pretty fast, with Jack acting entitled and controlling, so PJ cut him lose before it could get really bad. Leo, in retaliation, made Jack's life a living hell on the football team, so much so that he finally had to quit.

PJ and Leo: Aka, Prince Squared, aka, Sleeping Princes. They're the ones that stick. They get together their senior year. Full headcanons here

Alice and Penny: Penny is Anastasia and Will Scarlet's daughter, who Alice met in Wonderland after escaping her tower. They had mutual crushes on each other, but it never got much farther than quiet flirting. Alice must have a thing for daughters of outlaws? Penny, Alice, and Amani (Alice Liddell and Cyrus's daughter) end up all starting a Wonderland club at Storybrooke High together.

Robyn and Alice: Aka, Curious Archer, aka, Mad Archer. They stick, and they are also each other's true love. They get together when Robyn's a junior, and Alice is a sophomore. Full headcanons here

Gideon and Lorena: Lorena is the daughter of some random townsperson. She asked Gideon out to humiliate him sophomore year, but actually started to fall for him. But by that point, Gideon had figured out her intentions and broke things off, her having already burnt that bridge. Lorena stops hanging out with the friends who convinced her to do that, and she and Gideon have an amicable relationship. After, of course, Robyn and Hope wrecked her car in retaliation, "Before He Cheats" style.

Hope and Robyn: Hope developed a crush on Robyn in middle school, and confessed to her one night. Robyn had always saw Hope as a little sister, and so rejected her...badly. (It's not Robyn's fault, she was raised by Zelena.) And Hope took it...badly. This fucked up their previous rivaling friends dynamic and brought them into full on frenemy territory. Alice's arrival and Robyn's utter being smitten with her did not help matters at first, but eventually, they get Robyn and Hope to be inseparable friends again (by locking them in a room together and throwing away the key, obviously.)

Hope and Ross: Ross is the son of some Duke from the Enchanted Forest who's an entitled ass. Hope met him in her middle school ballet class, but they didn't start dating until freshman year. He's a douche, who just wanted to date the Savior's daughter, not Hope. They broke it off (very dramatically) a few months in. They are still very antagonistic to each other,

Hope and Gideon: Aka, Cygnet Scholar. They stick. They get together while Hope is a sophomore and Gideon is a junior. Full headcanons here
