P.O.P Publication Final Print 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm really happy with how the map and stamp design system I created for this publication works across all the pages. It gives a clear consistency and connection across all the pages and makes them feel like one body of work. The vertical quote/title text is another factor that connects the spreads and also engages the reader by making the publication more interactive, with the reader having to turn the pages around. I think this really helps my publication stand out and would engage more readers.

P.O.P Publication Final Print 1
I'm really happy with the final outcome of my print. I printed on 120gsm white paper which I think help the colours stand out and make the publication feel more professional. Printing was a really good learning experience and taught me a lot about how to get a publication ready for print. I'd never made a publication with page numbers, contents and editorials before, so it was interesting to learn about how those worked and functioned within a publication.

Grid Test Print
This is how the grid test print turned out. I don’t really like the way this grids look on paper, they feel slightly out of place and don’t look nice underlying all the type. It also makes the pages feel a bit messier and I prefer the pages cleaner looking. I’m going to take the grids off for my final print and publication.

More Grids
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I adjusted the placement of the maps on each page to align with the grid and make them feel like they're on graphic. I feel like this works quite well and helps connects the the text and stamps more to the map overlays

Grid Exploration
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
exploration of putting grids on some pages. I think if I were to do this I'd limit it to just pages with maps or collage areas on them to make it look like apart of the imagery. I feel like this looks quite cool on certain areas but does not work the best on others. I think I'd have to text print this out to see if I really like it or not. I'm especially unsure about it on the contents page, I think it works well on the inside cover spreads but the cutoff maps on the contents page make the grid look funny.

Editorial/Intro Exploration
Tumblr media
Based on my feedback I worked on my editorial/intro page to make to feel more connected to the maps and stamps on the page. I like the key text being vertical and large, I think this looks quite cool and matches the theme of the rest of my publication.
Oliver also suggested trying out using visible grid to organise some of the pages. I tried this out on the editorial page and I do quite like the look of it but I'm not sure how well this would work on all the pages or if this would have to be a consistent thing throughout the whole publication. I like the full page grid better and I'll try this out on all my spreads and see how it looks. I also kind of like the grid being uneven and not fitting the two column grid I used.

Contents Exploration
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Started exploring more options for the contents page and not trying to not have too much white empty space. I played with scale and exploring vertical text. I think this almost makes it look like a postcard which is quite cool but I don't know if it matches the publication really well. All of the body text is horizontal throughout the rest of the publication and I feel like turning the contents sideways could mess up the cohesion.

Spread Changes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Based on my feedback I made changes to the 'Biljana's Life Changing Move' spread. I edited the map and made it blue, my feedback said it blended in with the background too much as cream, and moved it so it so it wouldn't overlap any text. I think having it half on the page looks quite cool, it gives more breathing room and white space, and also matches with the cutoff maps in other parts of my publication.
I was made some tweaks to my spread to make the stamps and illustrations fit better around the photographs and the text.

Final Cover
Tumblr media
I have decided to leave this as my final front and back cover. I made some slight changes from my feedback and now I'm really happy with the way it looks. Seeing it printed through the test print and looking at the blue with the inside cover was really cool and made me more confident in an all blue cover. I think the maps and the text look really nice standing out against the dark blue background and I'm really happy with how everything looks.

Developed Test Print & Feedback
Printed another test print to scale, this is the actual size of the publication. I wanted to test out an all blue cover and see how it would look, I'm really happy with the outcome and think the blue really makes the maps and publication as a whole stand out. There was a misprint, one spread didn't print double sided, but otherwise I think it's looking pretty good.
Feedback
Like the cover colour, and positioning of the title
Don’t need both pop and people, object & place there, could make pop smaller
The intro page needs more work too it, could play with scale of text
Intro page text isn’t as connected to the page, needs to be worked on to feel like it isn’t just put randomly there, same for aspects of contents page and acknowledgments
Scale of the stamps needs to be worked on, a lot of them are way too large
Map page on “Biljana’s life changing move” is too light on the page and doesn’t work super well on it
Could look at adding grids or stamp details, like the edge of the stamps into the work, around text boxes etc.
I also got some feedback from my classmates

Editorial, Contents & Acknowledgements Developments
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I followed the advice given in my feedback and changed the inside cover colours and swapped the contents and editorial around. I think this flows a lot better for the reader having an intro to the book before the contents. I'm really happy with the navy blue as the inside cover on both pages. I think it would be cool to explore an all blue cover to match the all blue inside covers, it would make the cover pages feel more seperate to the rest of the publication and make them look like they had been printed differently which is what most publication covers look like and do. Because of this, I'm leaning towards an all blue cover.

Cover Exploration
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking at different ideas for the cover design based on the feedback I received on Tuesday. David suggested I try vertical type and different coloured background, as well as changing the name to reminisce. I think that reminisce sounds better than reminiscing, fits the publication better and also fits nicer across the pages.
I quite like the look of the blue background and the maps overlaying on it, but unsure if the type is too hard to read. I also really like the vertical type, it matches all the titles I've done within the publication and the pull quotes.

Mini Test Print & Feedback
I printed a smaller version of my publication to get idea of how all the pages will look together and what things would look like on paper.
Feedback
Could explore a lot more options for then cover
Look at different options for how the title is positioned, could be vertical, go across two pages etc.
Explore colour options for cover, could look really cool having back colour the navy blue
Red page on inside cover feels too harsh, a different colour would look better
Reminisce definition and pronunciation isn't need on the second contents page, looks out of place
Scale of text on inside pages could be better
Would move the intro/reminiscing page in front of the contents
Intro/reminiscing page doesn’t need a title, would be fine without
Changing the title to reminisce could be an idea to explore, might fit better on the page too
Scale of stamps might be too large

Inside Cover
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to test out having colour on the inside cover pages to differentiate the pages from the contents & acknowledgements. I think that this looks quite cool and makes the pages feel more new and exciting.
