My IDW Sonic Fancast Part 3:

I've had some rethinking about Surge and Jewel since I began rewatching Sailor Moon. But there are plenty of others I didn't cover before.

So... here we go:

"D.C. Douglas as Clutch The Opossum” - As a shady business man with a mug that just screams, "I'm bad news," a smooth and calm voice like that of Yoshikage Kira would be perfect. A cadence that would get people to let down their guard with him since he seems mean but sounds so refined. But like Yoshikage Kira, his dapper facade belies a heart of depravity.

Example:

“Michael Sorich as Nite The Owl” - While a live action role inspired me, Sorich’s performance as Woody in VR Troopers made me think of Nite. He’d be able to capture his jovial demeanor and would work brilliantly with the mounting horror of the Metal Virus in terms of mood shifts in the story.

Example:

“Amanda Celine Miller/Bennet Abara as Surge The Tenrec” - In Sailor Moon, Makoto Kino was kicked out of her school for defending others against bullies and is seen as a sukeban (delinquent girl) only for Usagi to find she’s good hearted. Amanda Celine Miller was a fan of the character and it shows in her performance as Sailor Jupiter’s new voice actress.

How would this shake out for Surge? Well, for me, I think Amanda’s smooth yet tough tone as Mako would lend itself well for the Tenrec when she’s unapologetically villainous. As if Mako really was the bad girl she was seen as.

However, in the event of Surge turning herself around, Amanda’s performance would be able to mellow out into something still Surge-y but also able to come off more heroic. A real punk if you will.

Examples:

“Derek Stephan Prince as Rough and Tumble” - Two for the price of one. Derek's voice for Impmon would fit Rough with his fast talking New Yorker voice. Given it's a Joe Pesci impression, it'd be a good callback to the wet bandits. Badabing-badaboom.

Meanwhile, the voice of Elgar from Power Rangers Turbo would be a perfect fit for the more slow-witted Tumble.

"Stephanie Sheh as Jewel The Beetle" - I feel like Sheh's performance as the ditzy Usagi Tsukino would transfer well into Jewel's neurotic sense of order as well as how she can get anxious pretty quick. Give it a bit of a nasally quality and it'd fit perfectly.

Genocide Jack for the character ask breakdown. (If you are still doing it of course)

Hey, Kirby! Thanks for reaching out. I'm doing this ask game as long as people send asks. Gee, how did I know you would ask about Genocide Jack? I'll give the full breakdown.

How I feel about this character: Positive! She's a ton of fun. Even when I didn't like Toko much in THH, Jack was usually a pleasure. I'd be sitting there like "when's that brat gonna sneeze or faint already." (I'm one of those people who only appreciates Toko after UDG, truly a game that works wonders)

All the people I ship romantically with this character: I love syomaru as much as anyone else. I'll always adore Komaru Naegi, normiest girl in the world, holding an abundant and generous love in her heart for both a misanthropic geek AND her literal serial killer alter. Syonia is an underrated ship in the fandom, though maybe not so much among the Genocide Jack fandom? It just seems like a no-brainer to me with boundless comedic potential.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: We're sleeping on the Genocide Jack + Sakura Ogami friendship. Ultimate Straight Woman/Funny Woman duo. The most virtuous and stoic DR character meets the biggest loose cannon in the franchise. I imagine even Jack would chill out a little with Sakura around (especially because she'd know Sakura could kill the shit out of her if threatened). And I like the notion that Jack could crack Sakura's stoic exterior. Let the girl have some fun, dammit.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I don't know what the popular/unpopular opinions are. Is it common for people to find her annoying? I enjoy every second she's onscreen. Erin Fitzgerald deserves the credit for that. Her delightful performance is just the right amount of intentionally irritating without veering into actually irritating. (NOTE: Ironically, I originally credited Amanda Celine Miller, who plays Toko. Always fact-check, kids. Thanks, @snitchesnsneeds!)

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wouldn't be the first person to wish that her portrayal in the game had done more to actually explore DID, rather than stay rooted in a rather problematic cliche. Thankfully, many fans have done a whooole lot of work to elevate Genocide Jack in this regard. So I'll instead say: show her having friends! It can't just be Komaru, right? Now that she's calmed down with the whole "killing cute boys" thing and works with Future Foundation to help restore the world, I'd love to see her getting along with other people rather than being constantly on the defensive.

As we all know, Kenji is a character from a dating sim known as Sakura Days. But dating sims don't usually just have one dateable option. And that's where these five come in. And yes they are all 18 like Kenji is.

As I detailed in this headcanon post, Sakura Days is a dating sim with competitive elements (ala the game "Daisu-Kiss"). For example, if you decide to play as a boy and pick Kenji either Satoru or Makoto would be your rival for the girl you picked (either Naomi, Akane, or Midori).

The goal being to woo the boy/girl of your choosing and confess to them at Sakura Academy's spring festival. Doing so by either talking to them, giving them gifts, or attending clubs (i.e playing minigames).

Satoru Murasaki is the smartest and the most mature out of the 6. A straight-a student with a stoic streak. While he can come across as aloof, snobbish and condescending sometimes, he secretly yearns for love, and will act as the father figure of the group if it's needed. Out of all of them, he's the one to keep them out of trouble. His favorite color are purple, his favorite flowers are violets, and his favorite club is Science.

Makoto Himawari is the energetic, fun-loving, and carefree class clown with a love for the outdoors. Sure, sometimes he can be a bit reckless, loudmouthed, and foolish. But at the end of the day, he's just in it for a good time. His favorite color is yellow, his favorite flowers are sunflowers, and his favorite club is Tennis.

Naomi Suzuran, sometimes called "Kouhai" by her classmates is the timid yet kindhearted artist. She may not be as socially knowledgeable as the others, nor does she have the strongest backbone. But that won't stop her from pursuing her desire for romantic companionship. After all, having someone that would appreciate her art would be nice to have. Her favorite color is blue, her favorite flowers are lilies, and her favorite club is Art.

Akane Tsubaki is the tomboyish, boisterous, and hotblooded soccer captain of Sakura Academy. Though sometimes she tends to be a overly competitive braggart who lets things get way over her head. At first, romance didn't seem all that appealing to her. But an opportunity to show the other girls she's got what it takes? Sign her up! Her favorite color is red, her favorite flowers are camellias, and her favorite club is Soccer.

Midori Kikumori is the patient and nurturing mother figure of the group. Though a little scatterbrained, unpredictable, and a bit of a doormat, she's the one you can rely on for help. Being the oldest of three siblings certainly helps with that. She knows a thing or two, because she's seen a thing or two. But oh she would do anything to have some someone that has her back just as much as she has theirs. Her favorite color is green, her favorite flowers are chrysanthemums, and her favorite club is Cooking.

I think Eden Riegel should reprise her role as Es.

Good question!

I'd like to see Eden Riegal appear as Es again, as I really appreciate consistency in casting and, as I dislike the characterization used in Cross Tag, I don't feel I've seen her best work yet- I'd like to see more! I find her delivery in Cross Tag slow and stunted, and not in a way that enhances her roboticism; rather, I feel other VAs performances were also stunted at times in that game. Laura Bailey comes to mind, though she is typically a GREAT Rachel, as does Cristina Valenzuela's Nu, which again I usually love.

Though on the other hand, Ray Chase did a MARVELOUS Susano'o in that game for his debut, and I also really liked Amanda Celine Miller as Nine; so not all of Cross Tag's voice direction fell flat for me.

That said, I'm not sure I can answer this well. I don't have a good ear for tones, and nine times out of ten, I can't recognize a voice actor (I had to look up all the folks I mention above.)

It's a boring answer, but I do like how BlazBlue does voice actor sharing; say, all the Saya-modeled PFDs sharing a voice actress, Homura and Tenjo sharing, etc. In that same vein, I might like to see, say, Makoto's Cindy Robinson try Yuki Himezuru, seeing as the two are supposed to be somewhat similar.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that perhaps Kaiji Tang, from Bungo Stray Dogs fame, could carry that energy into Unomaru?

Why Sailor Jupiter is my favourite fictional character and role model

To understand why Jupiter means so much to me, we need to look at Jupiter as a character. Makoto can best be described as a tale of two halves, on the one hand; a hard edged and tough guardian who’s been thrown out for getting into fights and has looked after herself for years. On the other hand; a caring individual who loves gardening, romance, shopping and dreams of being a blushing bride.

You’d think from that I was describing two different people, a street brawler and a hopeless romantic and yet we are talking about the same person, Makoto.

But, you may be asking, why do you like her so much? Simple, she proves that one is capable of being independent and strong but feminine as well. Let’s not forget Makoto has been expelled for getting into fights but also wants to be happily married and run a flower shop/bakery.

I think as a trans girl, Makoto acts as a great inspiration. From the outset, she could best be described as a tomboy (she is the tallest of the main 5 and easily the best at hand-to-hand combat) but deep down, she’s feminine and wants the traditional fairy tale ending to her life. She proves that you need not worry nor sacrifice your rougher more masculine parts to be loved or have friends as a woman cis or trans.

To me Makoto is the kind of girl who enjoys painting her nails but isn’t afraid to stand up for herself and others when the going gets tough, and that’s my kind of style. I like that she proves that femininity doesn’t make you weak or that masculinity doesn’t make you unattractive and that’s rare for children’s media. In some ways she reminds me of Sonya from Fire Emblem Echoes or Mai Valentine from Yu-Gi-Oh, someone who combines beauty and strength together.

Sailor Jupiter is my favourite fictional character and I think her VIZ voice actress; Amanda Celine Miller summed her up best “You can save the world and vanquish evil and do it while wearing a skirt, cute accessories, and fabulous boots, if you want. You don’t have to sacrifice an ounce of your strength in order to maintain your femininity, and vice versa.” What do you think? Who’s your favourite fictional character and why?
