Okay. Henren having angsty plots is all fine and dandy (it’s not, i’m screaming crying throwing up rn) but I’ve been noticing that they haven’t gotten a silly plot in such a long while now. In fact, looking back, I can barely even remember them ever having a completely non-serious storyline off the top of my head. Someone please remind me if I’m missing something, but the only one I can think of is the episode where Hen’s mother is planning on getting married, but it ends with Hen and Karen renewing their vows.

And while I’m very aware that 911 is a drama with a capital D and not to be taken too seriously with their unrealistic scenarios (the amount of near death situations they’ve all been in ohmygod), there’s still so many light and funny moments, and I’m starting to get really annoyed that those moments never fall on the only lesbian couple. We’ve gotten silly storylines from every pairing on the show: only recently, we’ve gotten Athena avoiding being alone with Bobby through increasingly ridiculous cruise activities, we’ve gotten Chimney losing his engagement ring and freaking out about it while Maddie finds the ring and is freaking out over not being able to get it off her finger, we’ve gotten Buck and Eddie’s bachelor’s party sequence and Buck’s cowboy curse (I could go on and on with Buck’s silly storylines, because I’m aware Buck is sort of the character for silly storylines on the show).

And yes, I know they’ve all also had their own very serious storylines alongside the silly ones, but alongside is the key word here. They’ve been put through angst and they’ve gotten to show their silly sides. All Hen and Karen get to do is cry and suffer, it seems. And I’m not the biggest fan of that, it seems so unfair (not to mention that it adds to the stereotype that queer stories are only interesting if they’re tragic). Just for once I’d like to see them have a silly side plot while the others balance it out with some angst.

Like, give me Hen and Karen in rivalry with another gay couple at their kids’ school. Give me Denny having to pick one of them to come present their jobs for career day and then spending the episode gathering pros and cons why each of their jobs is cooler (which definitely expands on the whole firefam discourse. Karen gets Buck and Maddie on her side, Hen gets Chimney and Eddie to vouch for her. Chaos ensues, bets are made. Denny ends up asking Maddie to go because the dispatcher’s job reminds him of Q from James Bond). Give me Karen’s lucky bracelet breaking and Hen freaking out because she’s certain it means bad luck.

All in all, I just want to see a wlw queer pairing that’s celebrating their relationship in a joyful way. Hen and Karen have so much potential outside of the angsty storylines, I just wish the writers would give them the chance to expand their horizons.

something that really pisses me off is this headcanon that ice would have been or was against mav pulling bradley’s papers for the academy.

like i’m sorry but I need some of you to think for a second. this is a man whose jet wash indirectly also led to the accident that resulted in goose’s death and probably carried that guilt for half his life too. this is also the man who was there to watch mav and carole grieve for the brother/husband they lost for YEARS. not to mention he was close to goose as well since they were both at the academy. like he would have wanted to protect bradley just as much as mav did when he made the decision to pull the papers. it’s a dumb moment for both of them but again. 100% they would have both thought they were doing the right thing for bradley.
