lol I remember that time as a teenager when i think I got this book for free from a garage sale (the same one i got the hobbit and 1984 for free) or from a library sale which was in Spanish

And I read the whole thing only knowing a very basic amount of Spanish

Saw a video of cherry varenyky (Ukrainian dumplings) served with sour cream (traditional way to eat it). And non-Ukrainians in the comments think that it's someone messing up a recipe or something 😭 when Ukrainians and a lot of other Eastern Europeans eat everything with sour cream. And I mean EVERYTHING. Sweet or savory dumplings, soup and borscht, deruny (hashbrowns), salads, crepes....

i think some rtc fans, usually USAmericans, don’t realise that misha would be, like, still very much in ukrainian infospace. "i headcanon that misha still has his phone set to ukrainian even after moving to canada!" no shit. believe it or not he'd be watching movies in ukrainian dub, keeping up with ukrainian news and memes, he would not start thinking in english and he would not act like someone who "carries his home in his heart as an old, bittersweet memory from the past life". he'd be more like "as soon as i have 500 bucks i'm booking a plane ticket and in 12 hours i'll be eating dumplings in puzata hata" and he definitely doesn't plan on assimilating

Mischa... Mischa Mischa Mischa.... he calls you up because he's already on his way over to your place but he missed the sound of your voice too much to wait. Or as he put it, "my heart is a cathedral, your voice is the ringing of the bells, the doves that fly above. each moment I am away from you, it is no longer house of worship because there is no divinity, no angels to deliver salvation, no embrace of heaven's gates."

so he shows up and sees you all snuggled up on the couch in your crusty comfy bed rotting clothes, but the way he looks at you is so sincerely the way someone else would look at the most breathtaking supermodel. he looks at you with that raw ukrainian passion and rushes forward to you. he takes your face so tenderly in his hands presses your foreheads together before he kisses you.

"oh, my beloved, my kokhanyy..." your stomach always does that little twisty flippy thing when he calls you kokhanyy - beloved in ukrainian. he's been using the pet name for as long as you can remember, but it still makes you all flustered. he kisses you some more and notices you don't seem to be quite yourself. he crouches down next to you, holding your hand in both of his, kissing it and holding it to his cheek as he asks what's wrong. you tell him you woke up to your period this morning and all you want to do is curl up in a ball and not move.

"period, period..." he murmurs, trying to remember what the ukrainian translation is. "oh, menstruatsiya!"

"yeah, menstruatsiya." you chuckle.

"oh, my dove..." he says, pulling you close to him. he rests your head on his chest, stroking your hair or caressing your cheek. "it is a most beautiful thing. the blood of your womb gives way to the seeds of new life. It is like a kiss from the stars, it is telling you that you are a strong, fertile tree, bursting with the fruit of life."

you look up at him, smiling softly, touched by his words.

"besides, squeezing lining of organs out of bleeding hole is gangster as SHIT, yo!" he exclaims, jumping up before kissing your hand again.

"I go get you chocolates and medovik." he says as he rushes out, then turns around.

"honey cake. very good, very comforting." he clairifies. you chuckle to yourself as he rushes out to get you some sweets and comfort food. you really don't know what you'd do without him.

I just want to make one thing very clear. Black and brown people, especially Muslims right now, don't owe white people for your allyship in racial justice. Not even those who are themselves systemically marginalized in some way. Not white Jews, not white queers, not white disabled, not white working class, not white poor.

Whiteness is the most lethal kind of oppression because it built the current colonial capitalist, imperialist world order. Every white person benefits from and is complicit in its systems in some way because white supremacy is global. Whatever marginalization has white people in it can be and is easily weaponized against the mellanated. When charged with your racist, exclusionary and oppressive behaviour you hold up Black and brown people of the same marginalizations as tokens. This is the only time they are ever visible; more often than not you profit off their labour, hoard their gains, throw them under the bus and make them part of your iconography for liberal progress points once they're dead and have no inconvenient opinions about your conduct.

This is why it's very hard for Black and brown people to take accusations of bigotry towards you in good faith. We also have a duty of care towards others but more often than not it feels like you want us to do what you want while holding a knife to our necks. Even when you don't do it directly, you issue demands like "if you don't do x and y you clearly don't care about my people and deserve the worst!!!" without considering for a moment that the full brunt of that policing will always fall on Black and brown people, because punitive justice exercises itself first and foremost on the vulnerable. If your demands for allyship carry disproportionate punishment for Black and brown people should we refuse, you're just on some power trip and never needed our help in the first place. This also obfuscates the needs and disenfranchisement of BIPOC Jewish, queer, poor, disabled and Global South people, because without racial justice, few of your gains will ever materialise in their lives. It's always trickle down liberation for the rest of us.

Your allyship is supposed to be the work of conscience, a recognition of injustice and a drive towards privilege equal to your own. For white people, it's an individual reparation on your part. It is not an act of kindness, or benevolence, or a transaction that must be repaid in kind. The worst of us deserve the same rights the worst of you already have. That's the meaning of equality. If you're willing to let us get fired, deported, or brutally murdered for bad behaviour, then not only were you never an ally, you were also just waiting for the opportunity to use that weapon you claim you never wanted. There is no justice in an asymmetry of power.
