Israel's news last week was dominated by the heart-wrenching scenes of the coffins of the Bibas children and their young mother. But there were also many positive "Young at Heart" news stories, as can be seen in this newsletter. The Jewish Agency's "Youth Futures" program has been vastly expanded to help young Israeli families adversely impacted by the war. Simcha Layeled (Joy for the Child) entertained some 400 disabled children at their winter camp in Eilat. A new initiative allows the over-50s (young at heart) to volunteer for a year of service to Israeli communities. And watch Israeli NGO Innovation: Africa bring more clean drinking water to rural Ugandan children. A new innovative Israeli medical system unblocks arteries from the heart to the brain. And Europe is funding an Israeli professor's innovative treatments for atrial fibrillation of the heart. Another new Israeli medical tool helps detect a mutant gene linked to autism and cancer in children. And three new Israeli medical schools have already enrolled nearly 200 future young Israeli doctors. Israel is also building a future of hi-tech engineers at Tel Aviv's Afeka College. Meanwhile, Israel's Tech It Forward is giving young college graduate immigrants tours to help them choose future careers in Israeli hi-tech. Prospective professional Israeli immigrants can now apply for their license to practice in Israel before making Aliyah. And a $25 million donation from Charles Bronfman will ensure Birthright Israel will continue to bring young Jews to Israel. Finally, you must watch the video of a class of Israeli kindergarten children visiting the Knesset (Israel's Parliament). As a platoon of visiting IDF soldiers strolls past them, the children loudly chant the Prayer for Protection of the Israeli Army. It really pulls at the heartstrings!
The photo (TY Sharon) is of a new children's playground in Jerusalem, built next to a new Memorial to the Fallen

the israeli government offers huge incentives for jews to move to israel — free healthcare, college tuition, tax benefits, rental assistance, free ulpan (immersive hebrew lessons) and of course — citizenship. for zionists, moving to israel is viewed as a beautiful thing, being able to go back to the ‘homeland’ a holy return — the phrase for it “making aliyah” or “to make aliyah” literally means to ascend — but it’s settlement. it’s government incentives to settle the land to give israel more power, more leverage, more future soldiers for the idf.

Jewish and Israeli Tumblr, I just can't deal with the USA anymore. We're on our tenth consecutive forever-year of stochastic politics. I feel like 2020 was 20 years ago at this point.
I'm tired.
I'll put all the justifications below the cut, but let me get right to my question: Olim & Natural-Born Israeli citizens: What can I expect from Aliyah? Is there a place for me? I want out of the USA.
I currently work as in IT asset management and procurement. Basically I just keep track of my employer's IT-related inventory (think paper, toner, laptops, and tablets), spec and purchase new devices as part of our IT lifecycle, prepare old assets for disposal through our e-waste vendor, and manage/deploy our new inventory when it comes in.
I know Israel has a booming tech sector, but I'm worried I won't make the cut. I'm not an impressive candidate. I have experience in IT but I'm not credentialed or anything. My academic background (Bachelor's) is in business.
Before my current job, I worked in QA software testing (APIs mostly), healthcare technology, and helpdesk (Tier 2). It's gotten me pretty far in the "firm handshake" economy of small town Texas, but I'm not sure it will get me far in the "real" IT world.
Does anyone have any advice for a prospective oleh who's coming from low-paying IT / IT-adjacent work in a low cost of living mid-sized Texan city? What are some good cities / towns to look at besides Jerusalem and Tel Aviv? Are there jobs for someone like me outside of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv?
I guess what I'm asking is whether Aliyah is a good economic decision for someone who doesn't already have money? Any olim here that could give me insights?
The ugly truth is this: The US is sliding into authoritarianism really quickly and I'm on the losing side. Sure there are supposed to be laws in place that will slow this down or mostly stop it, but the law only works if there's someone willing to enforce it and well... Can you name one person who has show the moral fortitude and is still in a position to do something?
To put it in more utilitarian terms: I'd rather be someplace where I'm unlikely to be scooped up and interrogated for being politically and ideologically incompatible with MAGA or whatever. They're already detaining Native Americans and Black Americans and trying to deport them. Bad things are coming, and I'd rather get out now while I still can.
It's not flattering for me to say, it reflects poorly on me, but it's honest: I'm no hero. I'm a coward and I'm not afraid to say it.

A companion to this poll.
(Once again, though I should not have to say this: this is not a post for political discourse, whatever your perspective. And it is most definitely not a post for political discourse from non-Jews.
You are more than welcome to respectfully share your reasons for your response. Using the poll as a platform for debate — or for criticizing others for their answers — will result in a block. 👍)

The most sensible reasons to move to Israel are:
Deep, meaningful connection to that land, feeling like an empty unfillable gap wherever else one is
Realistic imminent threat to safety / life
Many Americans in particular who make aliyah are unpleasantly surprised by the cost of living in Israel. Right now the economy is weaker than it has been in many years due to wartime drag - plus, there is the war itself.
It's a major step and anyone making it needs to go in absolutely clear-headed. Is Israel your heart? Is your immediate environment becoming immediately unsafe? Or is this 12-hours-after-the-vote-call panic?
By all means, learn more about the process. It may be right for you, and if you go, you take my blessings and well-wishes for a long and happy life there. Depending on how far and how fast America sinks, maybe someday your new neighbor will be me.
The absolute LAST reason I would ever recommend moving to Israel is with the intention of voting out Netanyahu, simply because Israeli politics are much more complicated than Americans are used to and Netanyahu is very very good at building coalitions and staying in power. I'm as disappointed in that as most Israelis and most diaspora Jews but we need to face reality. In Israel you would be able to be politically involved without fear of being excluded due to your Jewishness - and if there was ever a crime aimed your way because you were Jewish, you would be reasonably assured that the government, the military, would take your side. That is the most I think it is reasonable to hope for.
I for one am not making any moves to leave America. Now. Our standard of living is hard to beat, everyone I know is here, I like the food, the weather, and I am privileged enough to live somewhere reasonably safe.
Watch the police, the courts, the security apparatus. If they continue acting like violence against Jews is a crime, I say stay. If they start to act like Ivy League campus security guards, tacitly accepting violence against you - or worse - then it may well be time to go.

Good News From Israel
In the 29th Dec 24 edition of Israel’s good news, the highlights include:
Three Israelis were saved by skilled surgeons and Israeli tech.
An Arab Israeli saved Jewish girls and a Haredi Jew volunteers in an Arab town.
Israel has launched its first home grown quantum computer.
Israeli defense systems protect the USA and Europe.
A pro-Israeli American uses comedy videos to change minds.
Chanukah-period plaster has been found preserved in “cave pearls”.
Read More: Good News from Israel

The lights of the Jewish festival of Chanukah are a metaphor for many of the articles in this week's newsletter. Patients suffering from serious chronic diseases will be de-lighted by the results of recent Israeli medical trials which could be the light at the end of a long tunnel. Separately, one Israeli tech system illuminated the path for surgeons to extract a bullet from a Nova survivor's brain, while another helped them remove a tumor from a teenager's spine. A pregnant Israeli woman will now be able to see the light, thanks to the removal of a tumor from her optic nerve. And at the other end of the spectrum, Israeli doctors used a groundbreaking single dose of radiation to cure a patient from a deadly heart condition. Israeli continues to be a Light to the Nations by repairing children's hearts in Zambia; opening an innovation center in France; showcasing climate tech in Paris; winning research prizes in Belgium; celebrating 75 years of ties with Argentina; protecting Christians, Druze and Kurds in Syria and Lebanon; donating Christmas trees in Jerusalem; and delivering defense systems to the USA and Europe. Israeli scientists recently developed a new form of pure polarized light for high-precision optics; a new Israeli quantum computer processes information faster than the speed of light; and even off-grid Israeli Bedouins are installing solar energy systems. Meanwhile, Intel's previously extinguished "Ignite" startup accelerator has been re-ignited! Finally, as Chanukah lights are being lit all over Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and globally, a 96-year-old woman from New York alighted at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport, making Aliyah to the de-light of her 84 descendants from five generations. The photo is of candles for the 3rd night of Chanukah, lit prior to Shabbat. They include extra sets for soldiers, hostages, and the wounded who cannot light their own candles.
