What is BPD? It’s love and hate, I guess. It’s being a person, literally. Does that make sense? Everybody says I love you, I hate you, I don’t know who I am, but most of them don’t mean it literally, or know what it feels like to mean it literally. It’s living inside a mirror, reflecting everyone around you. It’s flat and confined. Sometimes I feel trapped in that mirror. But I learned how to step outside of it and into the three dimensional world. Now I spend most of my time here. But there’s something I’ve learned from being borderline. Something important. I don’t entirely know what it is yet. A way of seeing things, maybe.

Alexander Kriss – Borderline (2024)

I follow exactly three substacks: Sam kriss, Scott Alexander, and nate silver. By using all three ways of knowing (mythopoetic narrative, pseudo-empirical speculation, and statistics, respectively) I have achieved true wisdom and infinite knowledge. You may find me meditating in the bamboo Grove

With President Trump calling for a ban on violent computer games, ‘Universal Play’ is a timely look at the relationship between games and the people that play them.
Written by psychotherapist Alexander Kriss, ‘Universal Play’ explores “two things that are hard to talk about, that we often feels we’re not supposed to talk about: video games and psychotherapy.” Kriss draws on existing research, along with case studies from his clinical practice, to explore the relationship between computer games and the people that play them.
When I originally picked this book up in the store, I was looking for a book of research studies to answer common questions about the effects of gaming. ‘Universal Play’ engages in a certain amount of myth-busting around the alleged harms of playing games. However it’s actually something far more interesting; a book that explores how the games we play can help us better understand ourselves and others.
So what did I learn from this book? Here’s my top ten.
The game’s creator might set objectives within the game, but the purpose is actually determined by the player and how they choose to interact wiht the game.
The early studies that claimed to have established that computer games caused violence had significant limitations. But they were enough to establish the tone of the conversation around games. It’s now difficult to reverse that tone, especially as there is little interest from researchers to go back and undo the errors.
Excessive game playing is usually a sign of other problems in someone’s life, rather than the cause.
Games don’t have magical addictive powers. ‘Game addiction’ is better thought of as compulsive play. It’s not the game that won’t release the player, but the player can’t bring themselves to leave. If you simply blame ‘the game’ you’re probably going to miss what the real cause of someone’s problems are.
If someone is spending excessive amounts of time in a virtual world, the key to changing the behaviour is understanding what their purpose is for playing.
Games enable experimentation, unbound by the weight of the real world. “The result rarely looks like happiness, but is frequently felt as joy.”
Interestingly, the author doesn’t prescribe games as therapy. HIs view is that clients need to live their own life and be aided with it, not told what to do.
On abuse in multiplayer games: “Abuse is not part of play but antithetical to it...Play is consensual, abuse is not...An abuser violates the games potential by attacking the player instead of the player’s character.”
As new technology emerges, we should learn from our experience with games. We need to slow down and be careful not to rush to blind advocacy or doomsday scenarios.
“By letting us literally play around with who we are and what we could be, games invite us into a deeper understanding of ourselves, our friends and families and our broader communities.”
‘Universal Play’ should be recommended reading for anyone who doesn’t play games and wants a more balanced view on game players than the one often presented by politicians and mainstream media. But it’s also a worthwhile read for anyone who plays games and wants to understand themselves better, so check it out.

That last part about BPD reminded me of something I recently read in a book, "The Gaming Mind" by Alexander Kriss (it's about the psychology of why people play video games)
He described BPD as a trauma-induced disorder where you live at the border between fantasy and reality, where the boundaries between 'inside' and 'outside' are hard to distinguish
And I think that's really interesting in this context, given Maruki's powers
I swear seeing takes that are like, "Maruki only helped Sumi because she looked like Rumi/Rumi 2.0" or, "He kept invalidating her progress because he's a horrible abuser" just leave me with an aneurysm or something... Like have you all looked up the term, "Psychological Projection" and what it entails? Because I feel some of you all need to and come back later 'cause... Fucking hell...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I kinda wanna HC him having BPD now:

Here’s a list of what your Killing Floor 2 main perk says about you because I’m hopped up on adrenaline and don’t want to sleep.
Berserker: If you’re below level 25, you play Zerk like a deadly ballerina; you’ve learned the melee mechanics of the game so well, you’ve basically got it down to a science and can go entire early waves w/o getting hit even once.
If you’re at level 25, you play Zerk with Spartan activated at all times because you want to go even f a s t e r .
Commando: You’re either new to the game and playing commando to learn the mechanics and controls, or you believe yourself to be a general, directing your fellow psychotic, money-grubbing Horzine mercs in a perfectly composed symphony of gunfire and fountains of Zed blood. Spoilers: you are not the second coming of Alexander the Great. You’re barely even Napoleon at the Capture of Moscow. At least you can do your own perks’ role, but if you think you can get a lobby of 2 Berserkers, 1 AFK Support, and a level 3, prestige 0 Demo to fight as one cohesive unit in your 10-wave Suicidal game, you’re more deluded the Rachel Clamley.
Support: You’re an actual support-type person who wants to contribute to the team; when someone uses your backpack, you get a mini dopamine hit, and you are a tryhard, but in a good way. You always buy the M4, the HZ, AA12, or some combination thereof, and proceed to massacre the Zeds so horribly, it gets ingrained in their clone DNA, causing them to get PTSD from so much as hearing your name. Sometimes, however, you enjoy bringing the Boomstick into a wave just for the memes.
Field Medic: Unlike other medic classes in most games, you are not “a kind soul.” You do not play medic because you’re “taking one for the team,” or you “enjoy playing a supportive role.” Fuck that. Field medics can easily take care of themselves and you know it. No, the reason you’re playing field medic is because you’re a manipulative little shit who enjoys convincing other people to fight your battles for you. After all, the other perks are more specialized Zed killers than you; you’ve got decent guns, but they’re for trash killing. Why expose yourself to two Scrakes when you have six other teammates to fight your battles for you?
Demolitionist: The Demo is a powerhouse, and no one understands this better than you. For God’s sake, the HX25 can reliably kill Fleshpounds if upgraded even once. Yeah, Demos get a bad rep, but that’s because most of them just jump into a lobby without playing and at least obtaining a base understanding of how the perk works. That’s why you worked on leveling Demo up first before jumping into a public game. You don’t really give a fuck about the Gunslingers, Medics, and Supports on your team, though. Their salty tears fuel you and are quite filling as a bonus.
Firebug: You really fucking hate Crawlers and don’t want to waste an entire pistol clip trying to pop their head.
Gunslinger: Slingers do not “play” Killing Floor 2. You live it. You breathe it. You have played this game since its inception in early access, or have an ungodly amount of hours in it, and you have gotten so fucking good at playing Slinger, it has become an extension of yourself. You instinctively keep your crosshair in the middle of the screen without needing the actual option in the main menu. Your mouse clicks are calm and measured, perfectly in tune with the recoil of the gun you use. You can easily run circles around bosses and utterly melt hordes of Zeds without so much as a single drop of sweat congealing on your head. If the Support instills the fear of God into the Zeds, you instill the fear of an Elder God into them: to look at you is to know complete and utter despair.
Sharpshooter: Sharpshooter? No one plays sharpshooter. You just grinded the perk out to level 25 and never touched it again.
Survivalist: You’ve picked Survivalist in every game lobby you got into and immediately got kicked.
Swat: You usually play as Commando, but doing that all the time tends to get boring. You’re also not as skilled as other perk mains, but if there isn’t a Slinger or Demo on your team, you can reliably use the Kriss-flashbang combo to takedown a Scrake. Well, you can at least do it in solo.

I’m on fire (or just avoiding working on my thesis and cleaning up the house), a second new old farmhouse!
Ivars house from Näsby, Närpiö, Southern Ostrobothnia
The main building was built by dean Carlborg in 1747 as his vicarage. It’s a two storied Ostrobothnian house, rare to that time period for a peasant house, with an empire styled porch. The gatehouse belongs to the original yard, but the sidehouse is juror Hedman’s house from Ylimarkku, next to Närpiö. Sidehouse was where the elderly and guests lived.
Later on the house was working as an inn, and it was renovated to suit the needs of the Tsar Alexander I, when he was having his horses changed. I think I was told by a museum guide last summer that the Tsar only stayed there for about an hour.
The buildings were moved 1920-1924 to Seurasaari museum in Helsinki.
As I priorized the exterior at the cost of the interior, it has nothing to do with the original, beautifull interior the actual house has. There’s also hardly any fitting furniture. I was ment to share it with you before writing this post and searching the links for the CC. I can’t upload it because of the forever fight between MTS and TSR. I have used windows from Lisen801 and Kriss and their TOUs forbid uploading to anywhere else than the site they use. They both seem inactive, so that’s that. It’s so sad, they’re really some of my all time favorite windows and I use them a lot! But the wall’s are by @gruesim and the gate by @aroundthesims, thank you for making unique CC 💗

We run into the same problem that has always beleaguered the borderline, of being defined from the outside in. You did not experience this kind of event, so you cannot be traumatized. Because the rest of us cannot see the wound, it must not be there.

I think the differences are actually quite clear here - in Galileo's Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, everyone is fake! Simplicio is discoursing with Salviati and Sagredo, none of whom are real, and none of whom are directly juxtaposed with real famous thinkers that would trick someone into thinking they are real. It says "Galileo" right on the author page, you aren't going to be confused. Not to mention that it is/was a very established genre to write in that way, no reader at the time would be confused.
Shakespeare's Caeser (and others) are also fictional! They are plays, Shakespeare never claimed they were real. Audiences generally didn't go into them expecting that, when you see a stage and men dressed up as women you generally get that. I don't think Sam Kriss, career nonfiction writer, has quite the same audience expectation, even if this isn't the first time he has done this.
However! I won't give Shakespeare a pass here fully - we have a very, very long history of explicitly fictional media portrayals of historical events and people creating distorted or fully incorrect ideas in the minds of the populace at large. Like that recent Netflix Alexander the Great documentary I mentioned recently, portraying the Persians wearing turbans like they were muslims! That is...bad, and was a mistake, I criticize the media for that. I'm gonna gun for Shakespeare right now but its not at all weird to say "hey, media, don't confuse your audience unnecessarily".
Its no grand sin of course, this is far more niche than all that and I don't really care beyond you know sharing a thought on the internet and replying to replies as I get them. I just think Kriss could have either added a footnote, or have these writers be from fictional countries or the like; it would convey his point better to showcase that this is creativity-focused. Just not something I would do on my own blog, you know?
Another kriss banger

#bookbacklog - My 2019 reading in review
As the new year kicks off, it’s time for the annual round-up of books I’ve read. This year turned out to be a good one in terms of the number of books read. While I didn’t quite match my 2016 record of twenty books, I did get through seventeen books this year.
Like previous years, my #bookbacklog reading was a mix of fiction and non-fiction. The fiction books this year were a more even mix of dystopia, sci-fi and fantasy. That’s in contrast to previous years where certain genres (especially dystopia) have tended to dominate.
Despite reading seventeen books, the physical stack of books cluttering up my bedside shelf has continued to grow. Only two of the books on this year’s list were ones I owned before the year started!
But without further ado, here’s my list of books for 2019.
FICTION
Spillzone: The Broken Vow  - Scott Westerfeld & Alex Puviland (graphic novel)
Imposters - Scott Westerfeld
Shatter City (Imposters - Book 2) - Scott Westerfeld
This Mortal Coil - Emily Suvada
This Cruel Design (Mortal Coil - Book 2) - Emily Suvada
War of the Spark: Ravnica - Greg Weissman
The Umbrella Academy - Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba (graphic novel)
The Earth Below  - Katy Barnett
The Wildered Quest - Kate Elliot
Good Omens  -  Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman
Ahsoka - E K Johnston
488 Rules for Life - Kitty Flanagan
NON-FICTION
How to Think More About Sex - Alain de Botton
The 2am Principle - Jon Levy
Everything is Fucked - Mark Manson
Universal Play - Alexander Kriss
Introducing Political Philosophy - Dave Robinson & Judy Groves
Looking for what I’ve read in previous years?
2018 #bookbacklog
2017 #bookbacklog
2016 #bookbacklog
2015 #bookbacklog
2014 year of reading
2013 year of reading
2012 year of reading
