A little out of your wheelhouse, but can we talk about the aftermath of that time Swamp Thing invaded Gotham cuz they arrested his girlfriend?

That's not at all out my wheelhouse. In fact it was the cornerstone of an entire semester of Superhuman Ethics courses in college. To set the scene for those not in the know, Abigail Arcane, the partner of the plant elemental Swamp Thing had be photographed in a private moment between the two of them. The photos were published widely and Ms. Arcane was arrested for "Crimes Against Nature". Basically trumped up charges of bestiality due to Swamp Thing's nature as a nonhuman. Due to Swamp Thing's known influence over the area of Houma, Louisiana she was moved to what was assumed to be the far more secure Gotham area to await federal trial. This series of judicial miscarriages only sought to force the Swamp Thing's hand and he, before making any physical appearance, caused all plant life in Gotham to become powerfully overgrown. All city services and activity ground to a halt and the Swamp Thing made his terms known. His wife would be returned to him, unconditionally, or else Gotham would be erased from the map by the overgrowth. Batman's attempt to confront the creature (despite his misgivings, personally) did NOT go well and Batman was beaten bloody by the elemental. The next morning the Swamp Thing decided on a different tactic.

(A famous photograph of the redwood Swamp Thing, taken from the roof of the Gotham City Hall, Gotham Gazette) Assembling a body from redwood trees and stomping down the city's main thoroughfare, he spoke directly to Batman and the assembled city government. Return his wife. NOW. Or else he would truly demonstrate the upper limit of his abilities by causing the plant matter in the intestines of Gotham residents to violently sprout. The Batman had had it up to HERE with this nonsense, taking aside Gotham mayor Skowcroft (who is NOT well remembered for this fiasco) and laying out the facts. The case against Arcane was built on hot air and moral outrage, simply because the Swamp Thing was more VISIBLY nonhuman than most superhuman contemporaries, noting that the next logical steps set by the precedent would include charging the partners of Metamorpho, Hawkman and, indeed, Superman's romantic interests. Arcane was released from custody (though technically by pardon, meaning she was still convicted of "Crimes Against Nature" and is, indeed, still listed as a sex offender. The only reason this solution hasn't started this problem all over again is that she and the Swamp Thing have since almost entirely vanished from the human eye). This series of events is used as a case study in my profession, in fact they call it "The Abby Arcane Principle" "Most nonhuman entities are NOT superheroes, have little to no interest in public attention and often only tenuous attachment to human civilization, law or morality. To attempt enforcing these things upon them is to invite retaliation in kind from beings whose upper limits are at best poorly understood." In layman's terms, the Swamp Thing is a VERY powerful being who tolerates human existence in general because he is unbothered by it and in SPECIFIC because of his attachment to a human woman. We violate that understanding at our own peril.
